Introduction to The Daily Palace

00:00:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right. Thank you for joining us again on the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. Walei Bakker is my name. Great to be on the pod tonight as we discuss all sorts of things concerning Crystal Palace again. um Joining me tonight is Alex Waite. I haven't been on the pod with Alex in a while. How are you doing, Paul?
00:00:34
Alex
Yeah, I'm all good. Thanks, Wally. It's a pleasure to be with you again, as ah as

Crystal Palace vs. Brighton Game Analysis

00:00:38
Alex
usual. But yeah, it has been a while. I can't remember the last time I said to Joe last week when I joined him on a pod.
00:00:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:00:44
Alex
I don't think Palace had won a game the last time me and him were on, but I'm not sure that's the case with with yourself. I think we've been on one since we've won a couple of games. sir
00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, to be honest, there's been just, was it, I think it's been two, three wins in the league and um two wins in the league cup. So hasn't been a lot of wins to be honest to talk about this season.
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, uh, thankfully, thankfully, uh, the game against Brighton, um, turned out to be a three pointer for palace. Uh, we've, have you know, a lot of palace fans been Beskin in the euphoria of that result a lot of talks about you know what what ah what it means for Pallas and what Oliver Glassner's side can you know take from that result moving forward. ah But ah the lineup today we will will um you know take a look at um the sort of glastner's tactics in that game against Brighton particularly the forward line um scoring goals have been an issue this season but ah three goals against Brighton I've i've i've been seeing a couple of people you know saying maybe there's a lot of lesson to learn from that result against Brighton I will
00:01:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
of course also talk about the the possible effect of what we've seen as ah you know a solid back line for Palace, the same individuals ah in the back three and ah looks like Palace are reaping the rewards of that one and then we'll um get to Luca ahead of the ah game against Arsenal, two games actually against Arsenal coming up, ah one in the League Cup and then ah the Premier League so well that's the lineup tonight but but let's get into it Alex and you know start off with the result against Brighton over the weekend. um I know you probably know already but in case you missed it 3-1 was how things ended at the Amex. Esmaila Sa'a got two goals, Trevor Shalhoub got another goal
00:02:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Breitin did get a consolation goal towards the end. It was an unfortunate Maki own goal ah that made sure the game ended 3-1. But ah when you look at the the front line for Pallas, it started with Eze Smailasa behind um John Philip Mateta. On the 60th minute mark, Eddie and Katia came on to replace Mateta. AZ, of course, i had to go out in the game as well. But ah when when you... i've i've I've been seeing so many Palace fans, you know, talking about how, you know, the fact that Palace got three goals against Brighton and could have gotten more is is is of some significance. A lot of fans looking at it and they're saying ah it maybe, just maybe,
00:03:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Glastner's forward line is ah beginning to show its promise.
00:03:30
Alex
Yes, it's quite interesting because I looked i was um wasn't able to watch the match, unfortunately, which is like a cardinal sin as a Palace fan as we're playing Brighton. But um i learned when I did manage to catch up with the scores, we would tune it up. And that was like after 32 minutes or 35 minutes, I looked and I was like, wow, this does not happen often.

Player Performances and Tactics Discussion

00:03:50
Alex
So you're right. I think Glazner did find something that clicked.
00:03:54
Alex
um But watching the game back, a couple of things like that I found quite interesting was we were much more direct in the Brighton game than we usually are. A lot of long balls from Henderson in particular going up to Mateta and he was sort of battling. He sort of pinned Van Hecker, which I thought was really interesting um because he's obviously a great defender and a great ball player. But Mateta just sort of man marked him almost from from Matak and it was quite interesting to see that but I think with someone like Saar his pace is a real asset and playing the more direct approach is the best is the way you can get the best out of him I think he's not really ah as a SA style slow the play down and look for a pass or look for a shot kind of player he's very much getting behind and he'll race onto it kind of thing which we kind of
00:04:45
Alex
Got a bit of joy out of, I think his goal against Aston Villa was a perfect example of that really, he got in. beat the defence and was in one-on-one, then he put it away. I mean, him in particular as well has missed the loads of chances so this season, like good chances. So it was good to see him get on the score sheet a couple of times, and his header for the second one was excellent. um Really good poachers kind of snuck in behind and then headed it in. um Really good, like, commitment to get on the end of that, which is
00:05:17
Alex
you know, sometimes when you're not scoring, they're not going in, you know, he might have missed it or something like that, but it's a good sign of his confidence that it's coming good. um So, yeah, that direct approach, I think, I'm not sure if we'll see that against Arsenal, especially if if they play tomorrow, the two towering defenders, centre backs. But, um yeah, it's it it's good to see us mixing things up a bit. and I think the other thing that we're doing really well from is set pieces at the moment. I think that's um Yeah, La Croix against Man City and Chalabar obviously against Brighton. That's two in two from set pieces. You know, I think and you've got Gehi in there and Mateta. We've got some real physical players who I think can cause problems. um So we might be watching Arsenal tomorrow on the old set pieces and see if we can learn a couple of things.
00:06:05
Alex
from them who have been banging them in recently. But yeah, it's good to see us scoring from different positions, because like you said, we did struggle earlier in the season for goals. And I think we scored in five consecutive games now, which is positive. And, you know, I think there was a period where we hadn't scored in the first half of games, or we scored one in the first eight or something. And it's like,
00:06:29
Alex
this more front footed approach is really good for the fans. And I think it it just gives us a lift and, you know, we get the hope that we're going to go on and win and score more goals. So hopefully we can keep it going. I think Glazner is like very adaptable though. And he will find new ways to sort of challenge the opposition and and try and find their weaknesses, which I think he's done really well in the last couple of games.
00:06:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
but you you you talk you You make a very interesting point. You're talking about the directness of play ah earlier on in the game against Brighton. That of course helped by the fact that you know Jean-Philippe Matero was trusted to win aerial duels. But um there was somewhat of a change of shape you know later on in the game when Eddie and Katia came on. Of course that was helped by the fact that Brighton were trying to get themselves back in the game and that left them open to uh the the to counter attacks and get your space and the smiles are space i did it to them a bit but i'm joe was asking me yesterday about you know eddie and katia and phillip mitteta and you know pilots should be looking at as regards you know leading the line and
00:07:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah but I did say that if there was one thing we we saw ah if that came against Brighton was in Catea's evident lack of confidence at the moment, that that chance when it was open throw and goal and just couldn't bury it.
00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um It's just so what do you get from a player lacking in confidence. Yes, you could argue a goal or two in a couple of games would maybe put him back in the place that he wants, but but ah i' um I'm glad I can ask the question now and not have to be the one answering it. where When you look at Eddie and Katia, do you think it's done enough to maybe yourself, Jean-Philippe Materta, as the man leading the line for Palaiso, would you rather still have ah Jean-Philippe, you know, leading the line and, you know, but a it was Azey and um Assad, the other game. ah We don't know about Azey's availability for the Arsenal game, but would you have Mateta and then two guys behind him?
00:08:35
Alex
Yeah, I would. I think Matteta has shown that he's not just a goalscorer. He does do the physical side of the game really well. And when you're playing in a Brighton, a Man City, an Arsenal who just likes to dominate the ball, he's a really good outlet to have, I think.
00:08:51
Alex
um And Nketya doesn't really offer that. He's a different kind of player, more with it at his feet and um you know likes to run at players and sort of maybe similar to Saar getting behind um and a bit of a poacher. But yeah, I think Mateta offers so much. And the last couple of months where we've maybe been going for Apache period, he's stepped up as one of the main players. He's helped us turn it around, not just through scoring.
00:09:17
Alex
um you know, a couple of goals, but also, yeah, just being um a menace really, which is what he does best. I think when you've got a player like Saar in particular, who's now hopefully coming into a bit of form, um they can link up really well, I think. And then you've obviously got Eze to provide a bit of creativity as well. So I think that front three at the moment is what Glazna will continue to go with. And Ketia, unfortunately, will be on the sidelines until Glazna sees a reason to bring him in.
00:09:46
Alex
I can't see that even before his injury he wasn't you know he wasn't at his best I don't think he hadn't played loads of competitive football I think we'll stick with him and we obviously throughout the Christmas period will need rotation because of the fixtures so he will get a chance that yeah honestly I love him so I hope he does I hope he does better ah over the Christmas period or when he gets his chance next
00:10:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, the the good thing for Nketiya is he's not one to you know shy away from working for the team. He's always you know applying himself and um I know a lot of people would look at him and say but all he needs to do is keep putting in the work and the opportunities will come eventually. And you know and I did say ah while I was talking to Joe about him that it it wasn't so easy, you know, coming into the team at a time when confidence wasn't so high for the entire squad and result will not go in the way of the team. So maybe that ah might have had a knock-on effect on his confidence as well. But, well, there's a fast and a little run of games to come. And so hopefully, I will see how it goes. Just like you said, ah we will take a pause and um take a message from Zencaster

Defensive Stability and Improvements

00:11:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Alex, let's ah get on with ah you know some of the things from the game against Brighton. We've weve we said a lot about the attack. let's let's Let's talk to defense now. I was um reading the comments by former Liverpool defender, Steven Warnock, who was talking about ah the fact that Palace have featured the same defensive lineup in 10 of their 11 games being something that the team is ripping the rewards of. ah i don't know i I don't know what you think about that, but that's been a lot there's been goals conceded still you know in in in in this last couple of games. but
00:12:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
it does seem like the confidence in the defense is growing. um There were some question marks about Shaloba on the you know right side of that defensive trio, but it looks like he's coming into his zone. He's getting back to that level of players that we knew when he got into the first team at Chelsea. And it just looks like um his his confidence can only keep growing and you know good for him.
00:12:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
It got a goal against Brighton. I think that was the second goal ah in the league and it it just looks like the defensive trio as a unit looks like they they keep growing in confidence, don't you think?
00:13:11
Alex
Yeah, yeah, I agree. um they They've looked so much better compared to that first five or six games of the season where we're just making so many mistakes against like Brentford, West Ham. They spring to mind, sorry, name switch, Leicester at home. We just give it like giving silly goals away. um I think part of that is probably Lacroix is you know getting used to a a new league and he's sort of settled in really well now and he's perhaps the most pivotal defender now alongside Gehi um who's just marshalling that back line and that seemed to work really well but again she watching the highlights of the game on Sunday
00:13:52
Alex
just like they looked so like they knew the spacing so well and like they just communicated perfectly and they held quite a high line which is dangerous against Brighton with their attacking um quality but they held that high line they knew when to drop they knew when Van Heckel was going to play a ah long ball forward and just just saw it out easy especially in the first half looked really good and I think that only comes by playing together as a defence you know Even at the top teams, the the defense, is it takes time to to build, doesn't it? And to get that familiarity, especially with three at the back rather than a two. And you you just see it now. They look confident. They look like they know each other for a bit more. um It's all sort of clicking into place. But I would also like like to add that like Dean Henderson has come into form massively in the last few games as well.
00:14:44
Alex
um you know, some of those saves against Brighton, the one from Inciso and ah Lewis Dunk's header, just unbelievable stuff, really, like yes it shows that he's a man playing with confidence. And I think the back, like the back three will feed off of that as well. You know, they're like, OK, we can like get close, obviously. But if they shoot from 20 yards, we've got a man who's in goal and he's going to try and like keep it out at the moment.
00:15:10
Alex
ah So I think that confidence is growing as a unit. um And another player as well is Tyrik Mitchell who sort of... He's a bit of an unsung hero in his defensive work, I think. ah He gets back into the the when it's the back five and covers so well. And he's just, you know what, man, I'm going to say it now. I think he might get an England call up in March if he carries on playing the way he has. he's just He goes under the radar. He does his work. you know He got an assist on Sunday. He's learning that role as a wingback. But when he does his defensive stuff, he's he never puts the foot wrong. And I think he's a really good player.
00:15:45
Alex
um But yeah, I like it. I like how it's shaping up. And yeah, hopefully we'll we'll keep a few more clean sheets because we haven't had too many this season. But fingers crossed, you know.
00:15:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
you yeah it's it's It's interesting you mentioned Tyrek Mitchell, because there is one you know that has improved a lot in the last couple of games. It didn't have a very great start to the season, but you could say to but about the the the rest of the team as well. ah and And it's interesting you talk about an England call-up, and it's a very great time anyway, because ah you know Thomas Stukil coming in, um you'll be looking at you know all the options. It was suggesting the other day that you know it's it's somewhat a fresh start for the English national team and the pool of players that they've got. And maybe, just maybe, ah it will you know get a shout if he maintains this form. But just just before we you know ah stop talking about the ah defensive unit,
00:16:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, the the confidence is growing. You rightly mentioned the fact that there hasn't been a lot of clinch hits. There's been 10 goals. They're about conceded in the last seven games. you know Two against Fulham. There was a two-hole draw against Leicester. was it ah though you know There's been so many goals conceded, and some of them ah very avoidable errors, so to speak.
00:17:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Sometimes I don't want to be the one to, you know, ah downplay, you know, the praise that players are getting, but I just look at it and I just wonder whether just maybe Palace are not at that level yet, for example, at the defensive level that the team were last season, for example.
00:17:19
Alex
Yeah, I think, you know, like I said, it takes time with like three new defenders coming in and playing together. um But also like there's, um yeah, like those errors where they're just not as frequent anymore and they still happen, like, you know, get his own goal whilst unfortunate. And the one against Newcastle whilst i'm unfortunate, they still happen. And if we weren't scoring goals, ah you know, we'd be having the same conversation we were at the start of the season about,
00:17:47
Alex
how do we stop these errors like they're costing us points but the fact that we're scoring goals and the balance looks a lot better just sort of you know masks these errors a little bit but I think as we grow ah through the season we do need to shore up a little bit in those in those areas you know I'm not sure how many clean sheets you've kept I think it might even be two this whole season which You know, if you're trying to build and you're trying to climb up the table, you do need a solid defense. Um, but yeah, I just, I just hope it it does continue to click and we don't get any major injuries. Hopefully in January, we can bring in a bit of cover as well, uh, just to add a bit more quality. That'd be really good. Um, but on the whole, you know, it is a massive improvement from the start of the season, which is the kind of positive way to look at, I suppose.
00:18:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh yeah, I think I was muted for a moment there. Anyway, I was just saying that you were quite close. There's been three clean sheets for Palace this season. There was the one against Ipswich just recently, then the clean sheet against Tottenham, and then the 0-0 draw against United earlier in the season. And that's all the clean sheets in the league so far.
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, we'll take a pause and return to talk about the quick fire games against Arsenal coming off

Upcoming Matches and Strategy Considerations

00:19:08

of Palace, one in the League Cup on Wednesday, and then there is ah the Premier League game against Arsenal at the weekend. But we'll take a very quick message just before we continue.

Global Sports Podcast Network
still the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by GSPN, Wale and Alex ah with you on the port today. And yeah, we'll move on from the Brighton game now, Alex, and um ah go on to talk about the quick fire games against Arsenal. The next game for Palace is in the Carabao Cup against the Arsenal that is at the Emirates. Then there is ah the other game, it's not the other leg anyway, but the other game during the weekend and at the Celos.
00:20:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just wonder whether... You know, there's a quick run of games coming up ah with Christmas and and all. And if the there's the FA Cup starting in January as well, ah if, I don't know, Palaces have pulled off some strange or unexpected results ah in the League Cup, especially the last round against Aston Villa, where, you know, a lot of people expected that would be the end of the road as far as the Cup run for Villa is concerned.
00:20:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Are we getting to a point where glasner needs to begin to you know, maybe prioritize or Rotate because it's been virtually the same lineup in the League Cup games as well And it's only a matter of time before you know fatigue sets and there's already a lot of injury worries for the team But are we at that point where you know glasner needs to start prioritizing one?
00:21:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
league, the league over, you know, the cop, for example, or the cop over the leakers, the cop run would be great for Palace as well, particularly considering it's two games against Arsenal coming up.
00:21:26
Alex
Yeah, this is a tricky one. I think um i mean, the cup one would be a run would be amazing. um It always is for a team of our stature. um And Glazner, as always, said had this line of like every game we play in, we need to be at our best. We need to give 100%. But last time we did that against Villa, we lost Eze and Warton to injury. And then we lost in Ketia in the next game with a hamstring injury.
00:21:53
Alex
which Glazner admitted was because he was pushing him too hard and asking him to press too much in too short of a period. um So these games do come with issues and the fixture pile up around Christmas is particularly nasty ah for all teams really. um But I do sense tomorrow like there could be an opportunity to go out Arsenal. I don't think Arteza is going to field his strongest possible team, especially with players like Saka having played so much this season already. So I think that it's ah it's a tough one because there's a chance to go for it.
00:22:29
Alex
but then do you sacrifice Saturday? I'm not too sure. We still need points on the board. We're not out of travel yet. So if it was me, I would prioritize the league just because that is more essential to so our future and what we want to build. And if we want to progress up the table, we need points and we need them quickly ah to pull away from that relegation battle.
00:22:53
Alex
um But I do think Glazner will continue to put out a full strength side um and he'll go for it tomorrow, ah regardless of of what's coming up at the weekend with another clash against Arsenal. um And I think he sort of, Glazner's kind of got this thing of like every game we play is a chance to improve and like test the squad and push them a bit. um But we do have to be careful with that as well. But I think he'll go for it tomorrow.
00:23:23
Alex
um whether that has implications for Saturday, we'll find out late on Wednesday evening after the game if there's any injuries or um yeah, any setbacks or anything. But yeah, it'll be an interesting one, but I expect him to fully go for it. um If we can beat Arsenal at the Emirates, a couple of days after beating Brighton away, that would be a massive boost for the club. So yeah, we'll see.
00:23:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, um um i mean I'm totally inclined to to agree with you. i'm I'm sure it's one of those where Glassner's brain is telling him ah to maybe ah so you know apply some caution with wou his fielding and how he approaches the game, but his heart will be saying to him,
00:24:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll just go for it and see what comes out of it. 13 years since Palace made it to the league quarterfinals and the last time they did it was a famous victory against United at Old Trafford so maybe just maybe

Episode Conclusion and Listener Engagement

00:24:18

a victory might be on the cards at the Emirates. I remember saying this on Friday about you know of a victory away at Brighton the last time Palace did beat Brighton and I just called it and there was a victory away so maybe just maybe ah there will be a victory away at the Emirates in in that game but we'llll we'll have to wait to see and just as Alex pointed out ah what ah the fallout of you know going for it will be we wouldn't be able to find out until ah the after the game on Wednesday but I'm i'm sure the guys ah will will get more time to you know talk about the
