Podcast Milestones & Greek Elements

00:01:01
Speaker
Sorry. Stayed up late. Stupid Christmas parties. We didn't even go to... So Mike had his last weekend, but I guess it was going to be like the whole group, like how you guys went to.
00:01:19
Speaker
Yeah. It wasn't just his squadron. And I was like, I don't want to go to that. I don't even have anything to wear. What am I going to wear my new balances to your Christmas party? Like, so let's talk about that because this Christmas party last night, Anthony told me about it, like, I don't know, like a week ago, maybe. And he said the dress code is
00:01:42
Speaker
Festive casual. Okay. And I was like, what does that mean? Like Christmas sweaters and jeans or like, like, what does that mean? And he was like, I don't know, I'll clarify. The flyer says that, right? Festive casual. He asked and they're like, no, it's cocktail festive. And I'm like, what does that mean? Like, what does that mean?
00:02:08
Speaker
cocktail dress or like why are you throwing festive in there? Like a red dress? Like what do I have to wear? Just tell me what I have to wear. Sequin tensile? Like lights? I was like that's it I'm going in a Grinch onesie. So anyways on to the mission. What are we talking about today? I'm so excited to be recording again. I know we took a little baby break. Just a little baby one. This is a baby one. And now we're back for season two.
00:02:37
Speaker
I can't believe it's already something to do. Right. And like when we were like, Oh man, do we want to take a break? Do we, do we do a season one? And then like,
00:02:47
Speaker
break into season two, I was like, how are we here? How did we get here? It's crazy. It does. It just feels too like yesterday we just started this and then now we're in season two. It doesn't feel like we have 40 episodes, 40. Anthony was, he asked something the other day and I was like, well, episode 40 was on Yule and he was like, 40? You have 40 episodes? I was like, yup.
00:03:21
Speaker
crazy. Yeah, but here we are in season two, and we're starting off with elemental magic. Yes, yeah. So with elemental magic, ancient Greeks believed that all matter was made up of the four elements in their physical form. This theory was put into words around 500 BC, and the theory has been refined and built on over the centuries by philosophers and alchemists.
00:03:40
Speaker
I'm shocked too.
00:03:48
Speaker
Since then, it's moved from being the physical representation of the elements into what we see being used now as their energetic forms, and this is what we see used throughout witchcraft. Learning the elements and their energies is a great starting point for new witches.

Incorporating Elements in Witchcraft

00:04:04
Speaker
By understanding each of the elements, you can then incorporate them into your craft and build them into your spells and workings by working with items that correspond to the intention of what you're trying to do.
00:04:16
Speaker
While it's not required, you can also plan your craft in blocks of time throughout the year to help boost what you're doing. So for example, each of the elements has both a season that corresponds to them and then the three zodiac signs that corresponds to them. So you could build your craft and your spells based on the time of year. If you're wanting to maybe craft a spell using Earth as your element,
00:04:41
Speaker
then you would plan to work it in the winter. Or if you're working based on the astrological signs, you would do so for their block of time. Personally, I'm not great at planning things out like that in advance. I'm a very like last minute spontaneous person. So this is not something that would work for me because I would probably plan it all out and then just completely forget about it. And then like three months later, I'd be like, Oh my God, I never did this. Same. I'm the same way. If I don't set a reminder on my phone with like an alarm,
00:05:11
Speaker
then I have all of the intentions and it doesn't happen.

Getting Started with Elemental Magic

00:05:17
Speaker
Working with the elements in witchcraft is a very easy thing to do and you don't need a lot of practice outside of just doing your own very basic research. Incorporating elemental magic can be a very powerful way to amplify your spells and a lot like we've discussed in previous episodes when working with moon cycles or like along the wheel of the year. And then just like Tiffany said, incorporating like when they fall on the astrological charts or
00:05:44
Speaker
during specific seasons. All of those things are great to do when working with elemental magic. And it's all about defining your intention and then using things that correspond with that intention. So everything that we've already discussed on this podcast. And so the four elements that we're going to be talking about today are earth, air, fire, and water.
00:06:06
Speaker
And when we talk about the correspondences, whether that be herbs or crystals or anything, any sort of physical representation, what we mean is that the particular substance we're referring to that's tied to that element vibrates in a similar way to that specific element. And so that's why they're associated with that element.
00:06:30
Speaker
And it'll all make sense as we get into it. But if you are interested, we have this linked in our show notes, um, mint fairy on YouTube has a video and it's all about figuring out which element is your strongest. And, um, I really liked that video and she has it to where like, you can even, um, pull out your grimoire or if you have a book of shadows, do some, um, shadow work and everything to kind of figure out which element you correspond with the strongest. And I love that.
00:07:00
Speaker
I love her channel. She has such like her content is just simple to the point and then she's just kind of quirky too. So yeah, I really like her stuff. So if you haven't checked out mint fairy, check her out. She's really awesome.
00:07:16
Speaker
So getting down into the nitty-gritty of this now, we're going to start with Earth.

Exploring Earth & Water Elements

00:07:22
Speaker
So some properties for Earth would be that it's grounding, gives stability, a strength and balance, it's linked to fertility, to health, nurturing, abundance, security, and success.
00:07:34
Speaker
These properties can vary drastically because the Earth is both a giving and taking energy. Traits tied to Earth would be loyalty, dependability, honesty, trusting or trustworthiness, strong, stable, serious, quiet, calm, responsible, and multi-layered. Correspondences for Earth would be that it's a feminine energy that is passive and receptive. Its cardinal direction is north.
00:08:03
Speaker
It's season as winter, time of day as midnight, day of the week is Thursday and Saturday. Colors would be brown, black, gray, and green with green being the typical color for the element.
00:08:18
Speaker
Zodiacs are torus, virgo, and capricorn. With the zodiac portion though, this doesn't mean that you have to belong to these signs to work with the element, but it may be easier for you to have a stronger bond with the element when it comes to working with it. Crystals, think of those with weight and texture, so like hematite, green moss agate, malachite, bloodstone, and quartz, though quartz can be used for all of the elements.
00:08:45
Speaker
And then with this, some people would argue that all crystals can be used when working with the Earth element. And it's not wrong since they all kind of come from the Earth itself, but the above list is just tied to the elements of Earth a little more for their energy, their weight, and their texture purposes.
00:09:04
Speaker
and honestly you're going to see that a lot with earth when it comes to like plants or animals or pretty much anything that you can work with on the earth technically comes from the earth so it can honestly be used for the earth element. Metals would be iron and brass all metals again it comes from the earth so you could really use any but just iron and brass have stronger ties
00:09:28
Speaker
Plants, any root, trees, mushrooms, patchouli, ivy, grain, rice, vetiver, sage, any moss or lichen, nuts, apples, comfrey, cypress, fir, grasses, honeysuckle, magnolia, mugwort, narcissus, oak moss, primrose, and vervein. Planets, Earth, obviously, because it's the Earth element. And Saturn can also be worked with.
00:09:55
Speaker
And then some people also work with comets or meteors for this element. And I was like, I read that it was because if you think about like what a comet or a meteor is, it has to do with like debris. Oh, yeah. I was like, that's actually really cool. I like that. That's really cool. I've never heard of that, but I found it today. So physical representations would be things like soil, salt, stones and plants.
00:10:23
Speaker
animals. Like someone said that if you think of any animal that can burrow that's what she would use as like an earth correspondence because they burrow into the earth. So things like voles, moles, groundhogs, gophers, and then livestock like cows, sheeps, chickens, ducks, and then termites, ants, worms, and
00:10:45
Speaker
Elemental beings or spirits would be brownies, which is a fey spirit. Bogarts, hobgoblins, trolls, gnomes, dwarfs, and leprechauns. Bones, the use of bones just as a kind of like, tidbit, I guess. It needs to be done like, using them needs to be done carefully in practice because you don't know like, what spirit might be tied to bones, so you want to make sure you're being respectful.
00:11:10
Speaker
And then the ways that you can work with earth would be to like spend time grounding in nature. This lets us connect with both our inner energies and the energy of the earth. So you can draw energy from the earth as well as expel
00:11:26
Speaker
excess energies from yourself into the earth. And for more on grounding, just make sure that you listen to season one, episode 18. It's an entire episode on grounding, where we talked about like both the scientific studies and backings for grounding and its magical uses. So if you haven't listened to that one yet, definitely go back and listen to it because we did a full deep dive on that. You can work with different dirts,
00:11:52
Speaker
So most people know you can work with graveyard dirt or crossroads dirt, but you can also do things like use dirt from a hospital, like the hospital grounds to use in like healing work. Dirt from a bank can be used for prosperity work. Dirt from certain locations tied to like the intentions or what you're trying to achieve can be used.
00:12:14
Speaker
You can also bury things in the dirt. Just make sure whatever you're burying is safe to be buried for the earth, for animals that might come across it, or children that might come across it. Don't bury things that are toxic. Just make sure what you're doing is ethical, it's safe, and it's not going to do any harm to anyone.
00:12:32
Speaker
So some examples would be burying the remains of a spell to dispose of it. Though some people bury their spells for continual use, you can bury items to cleanse them. Burying spell remains in the front of a property is said to help attract things in while burying them in the back of the property helps
00:12:50
Speaker
to keep it around or keep it within your space. Burying in a graveyard puts it to rest or ends it, or burying it where money is held, like burying it at a bank or if you own your own business, burying it on the grounds of your business.
00:13:05
Speaker
can bring prosperity and abundance. And then something else that was like a little extra tidbit on this one was that you could bury things for abundance and prosperity workings in potted plants that you keep within your personal businesses or within your home. If you don't have like a yard to bury it in, like especially if you have a business that doesn't have like grass around it, it's all like concrete or something, you just bury it in a potted plant. I love that, right? I found a lot of like
00:13:34
Speaker
tiny little tidbits that I was like, I never would have thought of this. It's perfect. I'm totally gonna do that too. Yeah, I
00:13:42
Speaker
surround myself with plants. So you can create an Earth element-centered altar using any of the correspondences that I just talked about that are tied to the Earth on the altar. And you can use visualization when practicing. So visualize the colors for Earth, the animals or spirits, the plants, whatever is going to help you tie yourself to Earth. Link yourself with that energy while you're working whatever you're working.
00:14:10
Speaker
I love that. And I feel like that can work with all of these and just visualize what the correspondences are. And so all of this is so beginner friendly, room, closet friendly, whatever you want to do, you can make it happen for you.
00:14:27
Speaker
Cause I mean, like, you know, like you, you do a lot of candle magic using candles and any of the colors that are listed or any of the, um, herbs and plants that are like safe and non-toxic. You can dress your candles with, you can create and sense with them to work, you know, whatever magic you're working tied to that element. And it just can help give a little boost. Yeah. I love it.
00:14:51
Speaker
All right, so let's move on to the element of water. Water is a feminine, passive, and receptive energy. It's tied to emotions, the subconscious, compassion, psychic development and dreams, purification, love, rebirth and renewal,
00:15:07
Speaker
and ancestral work. There are many ways to work with the element of water. One way is through ritual baths and we've already talked about this on our podcast and I believe it was episode 12 so check that out if you haven't yet. You can also do shower manifestation and intention. Another way to work with element of water is through scrying and
00:15:27
Speaker
You can do this with a candle, a bowl of water, or using a mirror. Basically, if you don't know anything about spraying, this is just a very simplified explanation. You go into a trance, you stare into the tool that you're using, and you connect with spirits. That could be something that we could have an entire episode on, so I'm not going to go too deep into it.
00:15:48
Speaker
Scrying is really interesting and you should definitely do more research on it if you don't know much about it. Also, you can make magical water and this includes things like moon water, rain water, using snow in your spells. You can make a summer pot or add magical ingredients like lavender, lemon, sage, cedar, any of those into your floor washes to clean your home and provide protection or comfort or whatever the intention is.
00:16:16
Speaker
adding it into your home. Also, you can get rid of spell ingredients by using water. And then obviously, just like with what Tiffany was saying for the earth, don't put anything toxic or dangerous into running waters. But if it's something that you can safely dispose of in water,
00:16:35
Speaker
you can go to a body of water like a river and let the river wash it away. But also please practice water safety too. Make sure like if you're going somewhere that has running water, whether that be like a river or a lake, ocean, whatever, let someone know where you're going and make sure that you are safe in what you do. And also be careful what you're putting in that water.
00:16:58
Speaker
So another way to work with it is something called storm magic. And I didn't really know much about this, but essentially it's harnessing the energy of a storm into your magic. And apparently it's a really common practice, but I didn't even know anything about it. So I figured, yeah, I think we should do an episode on that in the future and research that more because it is super interesting. And I am intrigued.
00:17:22
Speaker
Um, I came across like when I was doing air using like when it's a windy day going out and cleansing yourself with the wind and then putting the wind's energy into your tools or crystals or whatever, by like taking them out into the wind. And I was like.
00:17:41
Speaker
I love that. Yeah. Like something so simple. You don't need anything. You just literally go outside when it's windy and let it like cleanse you and brush all of the like negative energy away. I love it. And that's again, something that you can do in the broom closet. No one even needs to know. Like it's just perfect. They're just going to see you outside when it's windy and be like, why is my neighbor sitting in her yard in the wind? Yeah, my business care. Yeah.
00:18:09
Speaker
So, and with water magic and incorporating water into your magic, it can be even as simple as just walking in the rain.

Air & Fire Elements in Practice

00:18:19
Speaker
Again, safety first, don't get struck by lightning, be careful of flash floods or places where it's not safe to walk when it's raining, but that is a super easy thing to do. Or you can even just visit the beach, lake, a river or pond, any sort of water outside. And then you can also even just set up
00:18:38
Speaker
water on your altar as an offering and this could be any of the magical waters that you create and that's a really easy way to work with the element of water as well. So as far as correspondences, water is tied to the cardinal direction of west. The season it's tied to is fall. The time of day is dawn. The days of the week for water are Monday and Friday and the colors tied to it are blue, purple, indigo, and silver.
00:19:05
Speaker
And the astrological signs associated with water are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. The physical representation of water in your craft can be anything from seashells, a chalice, pearls, a cauldron, a scrying mirror, really anything that you find near a body of water. It could be rocks from a river. It could be driftwood. Any of that can work as well. The elemental being is undines and nymphs.
00:19:33
Speaker
And the mythological creatures or fairies associated with the element of water are selkies, Chinese dragons, mermaids, kelpies, sirens, and sea serpents. And as far as the herbs associated with water, there are so many. I just listed a very, very short list, but there are tons. Anything from like aloe, apples and avocados, balm of Gilead, which I don't like that word because of the Handmaid's Tale.
00:20:02
Speaker
I was like, why? I forgot about that. It could be pronounced totally different too, but I don't like it. Bella, Donna, Birch, Camfort, Cardamom, Chamomile, Cucumber, Daffodil, Daisy, Hibiscus, Iris, Jasmine, marijuana, Periwinkle, Vanilla, and Violet.
00:20:23
Speaker
And as far as crystals, the crystals associated with water are aquamarine, blue, either Chalcedony or Calcedony. Don't know. I mean, we've said it before. We don't know sometimes. Turquoise, chrysocolla, lapis lazuli, amethyst, chrysoprace, and moonstone. So moving on to air, air's properties are intellect,
00:20:49
Speaker
the higher self, divination, foresight, psychic intuition and ability, wisdom, knowledge, study, and communication. Air is a changing or a flowing energy. The traits tied to air are being fickle, funny, creative, spontaneous, knowledge-seeking, eccentric, frivolous, loving, impulsive, soothing, and unattached.
00:21:14
Speaker
Air is believed to be one of the least used of the elements because most people don't understand how to use it or what to use it for. It's less tangible than the other elements, so it can be a harder concept to understand for most people.
00:21:30
Speaker
So, correspondences for air is that it's a masculine energy that's active and projects. Its cardinal direction is east. Its season is spring. Time of day is dusk. Day of the week is Wednesday. Colors are yellow, gray, white, and either like a pastel or a light blue, though blue is mostly tied to water.
00:21:54
Speaker
Zodiacs would be Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. Crystals would be quartz. Again, quartz can be used for any of the elements. Amethyst, Adventuring, Azurite, Beryl, Blue, either Chalcedony or Chalcedony. As we have said a million times on this podcast, we do our best and we are not sure on that one.
00:22:16
Speaker
celestite, fusite, hag or holy stones, jade, malachite, mica, muscovite, jasper, rhodonite, and then any quartz, topaz, and tourmaline. Metals would be copper and tin. Many people feel that copper is associated with water, but it does have strong ties to air as well for various reasons, so you could really use copper for both.
00:22:42
Speaker
Plants would be agrimony, acacia, almond, anise, bergamot, bluebells, all citrus fruits, dandelions, ibrite, fennel, frankincense, goldenrod, benzoin, gum, arabic,
00:22:58
Speaker
hazel, lavender, lemon verbena, lemongrass, mace, marjoram, mastic gum, mint, mistletoe, myrrh, oregano, parsley, peppermint, pine, primrose, sweet pea, vervein, wormwood, and yarrow. It feels like every plant when you list it out that way. It really does, yeah. So many plants.
00:23:19
Speaker
With plants, a great option would be to use petals and flowers or blossom. And then most, if not all, resins are great options as well. So those things like benzoin, the gum arabic, the frankincense, what else did I have in there, mastic gum, myrrh, pretty much any of those are great options.
00:23:37
Speaker
Planets are Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury, but you can really use any planet that's made of gas when working with air. Physical representations are feathers, thames, swords, incense, and other smokes, and then candles, especially if you're using ones that are the colors that correspond, or if you're dressing them with the herbs that correspond to air.
00:24:01
Speaker
animals are pretty much anything that flies. So things like bees, butterflies, moths, bats, pretty much any and all bird, and then spiders, which I thought was an interesting tie. Oh, I guess like because they'll flying on their webs kind of like from place to place. Yeah. Just terrifying.
00:24:19
Speaker
It really is. It was like my worst fear as a flying spider. I hate spiders. I don't hate them. Okay. I don't hate them, but they terrify me. Unless they're a cute little jumping spider. And then I'm like, oh, look at this little guy.
00:24:35
Speaker
Yeah. Elemental beings or spirits would be silfs, any air-based fey and angels. And then when you're working with air, you can do things like making and using incense. Smoke allows you to be able to like physically see air too, so it helps make it more tangible like the other elements.
00:24:55
Speaker
building an altar centered around the air element with any of the correspondences that I just talked about, astral projection, working with holy or hagstones, divination work, the sense of smell is highly tied to the air, which I never really thought about but like sent travels through the air,
00:25:14
Speaker
So using scents in the air as a way to connect to the element of air. So when you like light incense and you're smelling it in the air or like the smell after rain, smelling flowers, those are all like ways that you can kind of tie yourself to the element of air.
00:25:30
Speaker
So like I said earlier with cleansing, the wind is great for cleansing yourself, smoke cleansing or using different herbs or incense, etc. Energize your items and tools with the wind's energy. Put a sigil on something that's biodegradable, of course, like don't go throwing trash out, like use things that are safe and biodegradable, but you can put a sigil on something like a leaf and then let the wind blow it away. And then breath work, breathing exercises, or simply
00:26:00
Speaker
breathing life into items in your craft. I think it was the hearth witch channel. She talked about how when she does like knot magic she breathes life into the knot as she's like tying them or like any spell that she works she takes the items and like breathes on to them to breathe life into the spell which I thought was really cool. That is really cool. I like that a lot.
00:26:22
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. And again, something super easy. Something that doesn't cost you any money. Exactly. Something that everyone can do and everyone has is their own breath. Yep. And it's magical. You are magical. Yep.
00:26:38
Speaker
Okay, so the final element is fire. This is the only element that can't be touched without harm to the body. Fire can be extinguished by any of the other elements, but it is the only element that must have another substance to consume to maintain its existence. It is represented by the sun as well as stars, deserts, and volcanoes. Fire represents transformation.
00:27:02
Speaker
health, strength, and creativity. It's a masculine energy that's active and it projects. It's full of passion, lust, high energy, and this is the element of action, and it is the most active element.
00:27:17
Speaker
So working with fire, one of the best ways you can incorporate this element into practice is by lighting a candle, holding a bonfire, or even lighting a fire in your hearth. So specifically with a bonfire and hearth, watching the embers release while listening to the crackling fire can induce a meditative state. And you can also do this with a candle. And there are meditations and specific practices that involve
00:27:40
Speaker
watching the flame of the candle for divinatory practices. And this is essentially, you do this by reading the movement of the flames and the smoke that is released. And you don't have to have access to fire to work with this element. So say if you're practicing in a place like a dorm room where having candles is absolutely not allowed, you can work with the element of fire simply by spending time outside in the sun, dancing, or
00:28:04
Speaker
exercising to raise your own body heat to elicit that element and work with it. This also goes back to what I talked about earlier with fire being active and full of energy. So these are all great ways to work with fire without actually having fire around you.
00:28:20
Speaker
So I would have thought of like working out or, you know, raising your body temperature. That's really interesting. It is. Yeah. I didn't either. I've never thought about that until I was like researching it and I was like, Oh my God, but that makes so much sense though. Yeah. So as far as correspondences.
00:28:36
Speaker
The cardinal direction is south, so when you're setting up an altar to work with the elements, you would place whatever you're using to symbolize fire in that direction. And even if you're just working with the element of fire, facing the south while working with this element is just fine as well. The season it's associated with is spring, but in doing research, I've also seen people associated with summer, so either one. The time of day is noon.
00:29:00
Speaker
And the days that fire is associated with is Sundays and Tuesdays. The colors for fire are red, orange, and gold. Basically anything that elicits, like when you look at a fire, that's the color. The astrological signs attached to fire are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.
00:29:20
Speaker
The physical representation that you can use in practice include things like a wand or an athame, candles, and you can even use ashes from your hearth. Instance ashes can also work really well for this. And the elemental being is a salamander.
00:29:36
Speaker
So yeah, super cute. So for spell intention, you can use fire to enhance self-confidence, take charge, or just take the first steps in something if you're wanting to start something new. And as far as herbs, really anything that thrives in the sun, like rosemary, copal, palm, and sunflower, or

You could use spicy or strong smelling herbs like cinnamon, chili, peppers, clove, or ginger. Any herbs that resemble fire, like marigold, amaranth, which side note, I did not know that was an herb and I was like, oh, amarantha, what? No.
00:30:17
Speaker
Don't like that. Don't like that at all. Yeah. And snap dragon, dragon's blood, calendula, and sagebrush. And any herbs that sting or irritate the skin like stinging, nettle, holly, cedar, or mace. And lastly, any protective herbs like angelica, bless thistle, basil, and sink foil.

As far as crystals, rutilated quartz, citrine, cornelian, fire agate, orange calcite, obsidian, red jasper, tiger's eye, ruby, garnet, red tourmaline, and fire opal are all amazing crystals to use when working with the element of fire.
00:30:55

And that is all I have. Um, I hope you guys enjoyed this episode on the elements and you gained some new perspective on working with the elements because it really is super interesting. And it was nice to revisit some of this because I know like having an altar and just being like, Oh yeah, I have to have something that represents each of these elements is awesome. But then also seeing kind of why we associate this with this
00:31:20
Speaker
why this and how to do this. It's nice to revisit that. One, something that I learned or I mean, I guess I probably knew this and I just never really thought of it, but being able to identify if you have limited space or funds or something like that, something that ties into multiple elements at once, being able to do that. And then the fact that

While, yes, you have to research it to understand a lot of it or to know the correspondences, this type of magic is something that is readily available to anyone, regardless of what you can afford, regardless of what's in stores around you. You don't have to run around and find a bunch of different things to do this. A lot of this you can get from nature. A lot of it just has to do with yourself.
00:32:13
Speaker
I like that part about this topic specifically because not everybody
00:32:19
Speaker
can afford to go out and buy a bunch of tools or crystals or whatever. And while we do give you the correspondences, that doesn't mean that you have to use, you know, you don't have to go out and buy a crystal unless you want to. A lot of these plants, you can just find out in your yards or like in nature, in the woods, whatever, you know, water is pretty much available to just about anyone using things like soil for earth or like going out on a windy day to connect with the wind.
00:32:46
Speaker
These are things that don't cost you money. They're not things that you have to go out of your way to get to. Absolutely. Using your body as a tool is perfect. I feel like oftentimes whenever we're talking about magic and you see things posted on the internet,
00:33:12
Speaker
It's all about things and here go out and buy these things. And this is perfectly set up altar and you have to have all these supplies, but we forget that the most important tool when working with magic is yourself and your body and understanding how powerful you are. And so the fact that you can use your body for all four and then the fifth, have it be your spirit all within your body.
00:33:37
Speaker
take that shower, go for that walk, sit like in nature and feel the air on your face and then go for a run or dance or just move your body in a way that help bring about the fire element. I mean, it's just everything that you need, you already have. And I love that.
