Where We've Been - Where We're Headed

Hi friends, welcome Diggin' In. I'm your host, Megan. This is a place where we discuss the things that really matter in life. We cut through the surface to dive deeper. So pull up a chair because here we're Diggin' In.

All right, folks, welcome back to Digging In. I'm your host, Megan. It's so good to be with you again. Just wanted this to be a chance to touch base. We've been going for probably ah a little under two months now, and I've had... myself, share a bunch at the very beginning. And then I had my husband come on and then had on a friend to talk about how to study the Bible and dive deeper in with the Lord, which was awesome, with Katie, with Every Word Collective. And then I had my friend Jess on talking about just loss and um grief. And we definitely, we were touching base after that and just said, going to need to have her come on quite a bit and unpack a lot there. um Gotten some wonderful feedback, especially with those two guests that I just mentioned with Katie and with Jess, good questions and just people excited to dive more into the Bible. And then also just ah really appreciate the feedback on being transparent and being raw and real I know um Jess and I were talking, there were a couple of things that she wanted to share and just felt like, you know, I'll leave it at that for right now. But, you know, it's so important that we really talk about the things that, you know, are taboo in our culture and grief and sometimes what that looks like. And um it's not pretty. it It is not always pretty. And I'm sure that you can relate that there are times in life that are difficult and it just doesn't look good on the outside. And it's so important that we share in that in community together and um just don't isolate ourselves because if we find ourselves alone, that's where the enemy definitely wants to creep in. And if we don't have brothers and sisters in Christ to bounce things off of, then chances are we're going to get stuck. ah And we're more likely to listen to the lies of the enemy that come in in those moments. So I'm just so excited for where this is headed, um just to check in and, you know, kind of where we're going for the next couple of months. um
00:02:28
Speaker
I'm going to have some more guests on that I'm excited about. have a friend who actually just found out. She's a naturopath. And we met back when the whole COVID craziness was happening in 2020, 2021. And And we were working together on just fighting for medical freedom and bodily autonomy.
00:02:50
Speaker
And so I know her in that space, but we had a call the other day and I'm really excited about having her on. She just has so much great insight and kind of a look back as well on COVID and how we got where we are and all of that good stuff. So that's coming up. I've got another friend, Brittany, who has just an incredible and powerful testimony um of what the Lord has done in her life. And she's coming on later in the month. ah So that's all exciting. I've got myself. I'm just sharing some of my health journey. And then, you know, I'm figuring this thing out. We're figuring it out together. I recorded part of that episode to talk about kind of my health journey and why I'm such a fanatic, if you will, about health and eating clean food and all that good stuff you know that didn't just birth itself out of nowhere. and i definitely have a health journey as I'm sure that we all do. And um so a little bit about that. And then really, ah i crave your feedback from a question standpoint. um I go into a little more little bit more depth at the end of that episode, just saying you know it's so hard to unlearn or unknow what you already know. um And you don't know what people don't know. And because you know it, you think they know it.
00:04:17
Speaker
So it can just go around in a circle. And there are often times where I don't know necessarily what to share because I guess I've known certain things for so long.
00:04:29
Speaker
I'm still learning. Please know that I do not claim to be an expert in anything other than the fact that I need grace every single day. i am definitely ah aware of that. um But i just I've learned so much over the years and it's you know like sometimes in the back recesses of my mind and then some of it's more in the forefront depending on what I'm talking about with friends and family and you know people I come into contact with. So your questions are actually extremely helpful. i know I'm super active on social media. Well, I go in and out. I have a love-hate relationship with social media. But what I do there oftentimes is I'll share things that I'm reading and looking at, um things that come across my
00:05:15
Speaker
screen that I think are helpful or thought-provoking. Sometimes I like sharing things that I know are controversial just to see what different people have to say. i love that aspect of it. I've had quite a few conversations that have sparked actually from things that I've shared from Christians and non-Christians ah that either agree or don't agree, which is awesome. I mean, that's what we have to do is have conversations. we need to do. That's That's a good thing. And I think that we've just lost that so much in culture and society um these days, just now being behind these screens. But folks ah frequently can be cowboard keyboard cowards. That's the word. Keyboard cowards where you know we sit back and we fire off these comments um on different things and we say things sometimes that we would never say in person. And really too with the rise of AI, it's becoming... harder and harder to know, are we even having a conversation with an actual human and on the other side? There are so many bots that have been implanted. And um I truly believe just to, know, is AI the Antichrist? That's another discussion for another day. But I do believe that it has the spirit of Antichrist because it's causing division. that is
00:06:37
Speaker
Unfortunately, I believe one of the goals of it is to keep us in this heightened state of chaos and just so polarized one way or the other and looking at one another, pointing the finger and assuming that the other person, the other side, the other political party, the you know other whatever is the person is the problem. And truthfully, we all need to look within ourselves and acknowledge We're all sinners. um And, you know, take the Lord out of it. If you if you would like just to make it a secular statement, we all have things that we need to grow in and through. And so even just from that.
00:07:21
Speaker
taking a step back and acknowledging, you know, I'm the problem first before pointing the finger and going into going into it with someone else, if you will. So anyway, back to just saying, you know, we're figuring this thing out. I definitely, I've got so much that I've acquired over the years as far as just things that I've written down, um thought-provoking things that have come into my purview, but I started to write a sex ed curriculum for kids, really more for parents on how to talk to their kids about sex and pornography and masturbation and all of those types of things that are all kinds of words that I just spoke that can often be taboo in so many different settings because people feel like, oh my goodness, we can't possibly say those things out loud, which
00:08:14
Speaker
And that's exactly what the enemy wants. He wants us siloed and silent and quiet in our corners and not talking about these things to shed God's light on them, to bring them to the forefront and have a conversation about them in a healthy and safe environment. And so that's my goal.
00:08:30
Speaker
I want to talk about things all always with tact and with grace and um always bringing glory to the Lord and not talking about things that He's created um in a way that doesn't honor and glorify Him. So those are kind of some of the things that I've got that will be coming down the road when exactly I'm not 100% do know you know Right now we're in March and I've got some stuff coming up. Like I said, a couple of guests. And then we've got Easter right around the corner. Definitely want to speak about just the gospel message. And that for me is what it's all about.
00:09:08
Speaker
So we will do an episode on that. And then coming up in May... probably going have Jess back on and maybe a couple other moms. I talked about like maybe doing like a panel, which could be fun, maybe be difficult in this type of setting. But I want to talk about, you know, mothering well in the month of May since it's Mother's Day. And then just like some hacks, some mom hacks. You know, I mentioned that before, how what are some quick meals and And stuff like that. And then getting on towards the end of spring and into summer, talking about what are some things that we can do to keep our kids active and outdoors. i don't know if you've ever seen a Thousand Hours Outside. ah So social media, um well, she has got ah a podcast, I believe, actually. um But I follow her on social media. And the whole thing is like getting outside, outdoors for a thousand hours a year.
00:10:03
Speaker
And i have not tried to track my hours, but I think she broke it down at one point and kind of said, you know, like in the summertime, this is likely how much time you would spend out time outside. And in the wintertime, it's more difficult depending on where you live and the temperature and things of that nature. Anyway, all that to say, what are some ideas? What are some things that we can do to get our kids involved off screens, outside, getting their hands and their feet dirty and the dirt in the ground and the grass and, you know, being in touch with nature, you know, like go hug a tree, go touch some grass kind of thing. So we'll talk about that. And then June is kind of what I'm dubbing ah Redemption Month.
00:10:45
Speaker
because June will be the 10 year anniversary of when my marriage imploded. And I say anniversary, it's really more of a celebration. It's been a decade since that really came to a head. And it is just mind blowing to see what God has done in and through all of it. And so I just want to take time um to celebrate that and to glorify him through all of it. And Adam's going to come back.
00:11:12
Speaker
I don't know yet if he's going to be on every single episode that month, but we're just going to really talk through what it looks like to you know have this huge thing happen in your marriage and then how in the world would you possibly start moving back toward one another and how do you even begin to start to trust again and all of that kind of stuff. So that'll be June. And then we'll just keep on rolling through the summer. So I'm talking to Noah. I would love to have him on just for like fun stuff. um We have a lot of talks about AI and ah things of that nature, which has been really fun. You know, the teenage years, Middle school, early high school can be difficult for sure. You know, their kids are growing and I know pity on my poor mother. Lord bless her. um I know that I was not an an easy child, um especially in those teenage years. I was very rebellious and I actually am going to talk about that in a little bit. Um, I just had such a rebellious spirit and it was, you know, like this past as a, for instance, this past Friday, we went, it was my husband's birthday this past week and we went, uh, snow tubing. There's this thing that they call the magic carpet. And it basically is what you just stand on. And it takes you and your tube up to the top of the hill and then you sled down, which is really nice because it takes the hard work out of,
00:12:37
Speaker
Other than getting up in and out of the tube, it takes the hard work of climbing up a hill. Anyway, it was so much fun. But on the ah magic carpet, it specifically says no walking. And my initial response is like, well, why?
00:12:52
Speaker
Why no walking? I want to know why. And i first thing I want to do, what do I want to do? I want to walk. Like, why are you telling me I can't? Is there really ah a purpose in that? Or is it just because you had a rule? I'm sure that there's a purpose behind it. But anyway, all this to say, my son has got a lot of me in him.
00:13:13
Speaker
So all of that to say... I'm just so thankful. Recently, we've had some really good conversations about, like I said, AI and and things that what the fallout is of all of that.
00:13:24
Speaker
um So lots of fun stuff to discuss with him and his creative side and you know just how like, well, what do you want to be when you grow up? What do you want to pursue? And then thinking about, well, will that job still be there when you grow up? Because with everything that's changing so rapidly, who knows, you know, um which I mean, i think is, can be exciting to think about, you know, like what has God given each of us? What are our passions and what do we want to do? And then
00:13:55
Speaker
are that where Where does that all fit in the future? you know And I mean, i don't want to get too out ahead of myself because I can tend to do that and live so much in the future that I forsake what God has right in front of me today.
00:14:10
Speaker
And so I don't want to do that. But it is interesting to think about, you know, like as a for instance, Noah loves photography. He has talked about being a photographer.
00:14:20
Speaker
And I know for myself, I can tell on on social media and in different capacities, what is ai what What is like I was talking to my phone the other day. I'm like, that is a fake person. You're not even real.
00:14:35
Speaker
That's what I said. Because you can tell a lot of the time, but sometimes you can't. It's getting better and better. So anyway, I've already digressed. That's ah a typical saying around here. I yeah i chase a lot of squirrels. But um that's where we're headed, folks. So what I wanted to stop on here, though, today, really, and talk about on the heels of speaking with Katie a couple weeks ago and how to study the Bible She went into her treasure treasure method that she teaches in her course, her online course that she's doing and that she's taught before in our church. And there's a ah really ah ah great method of digging into the scripture
00:15:16
Speaker
super, super deep. And while I absolutely love that, that's just not the every day for everyone. And Katie would say that too. And so what does it look like for me? As I shared um in that episode with her, I have, I believe it's been about six or seven years, which I just said six, seven, and I heard it in my head and then it came out of my mouth.
00:15:41
Speaker
And that's like a whole nother one of those topics. Oh, I should mention I'm going to do a cultural response. That's one of the things um that's coming up in March, a cultural response to several things. I was hoping for it to be the first episode of March, but there's just so much, and I kind of want to take some more time to do a little bit more research One of the things being Super Bowl a halftime show with Bad Bunny. Dive into some of those lyrics um and unpack that whole situation. The supreme leader of Iran was just taken out. And so there's a lot of unrest right now in the world. We might talk about that, but just all kinds of things.
00:16:19
Speaker
And so with that, might all also talk about 6-7 and... How some believe that that may have some ah demonic or nefarious ah roots. So that's kind of where we're going with that episode. But all of that to say, six or seven years ago, i started reading the Bible cover to cover through the year. um And that was in addition to doing Bible studies with church. And um I used to do a Bible study with a friend in her home um and then doing you know just different courses. Obviously, on Sunday, we my church goes cover to cover.
00:16:59
Speaker
through the Bible. And so you know wherever we are in that process, I'm doing that as well. And sometimes that ah you know I do a little bit more digging after hearing a sermon with our pastor and just want to dig a little bit deeper for myself, or it sparks something in my mind that takes me off on a tangent, and I go and chase that too. But all of that to say, it's been so helpful and enriching in my life to read

Biblical Reflections and Life Lessons

00:17:26
Speaker
through the Bible. I usually get a really slow start because in Genesis, while it will be telling me my little plan, I like to go chronologically. It's just how my brain works.
00:17:35
Speaker
Um, it will tell me, you know, these chapters for today. And sometimes it's like those chapters for the week, maybe not quite that bad, but I just love Genesis. It's so rich. There's so much in it. You can never possibly know it all. Um, and I'll end up starting to read another book. I've got, my husband's gotten me so many books on Genesis, um, just extra, you know, supplemental stuff. And I absolutely love it.
00:18:01
Speaker
But anyway, all this to say, It's been so cool to see over the years how God is doing different things in and in my life and then bringing you know the scriptures that we're studying in church on a Sunday and how it overlaps with where we are or I am in my current reading. And um you know oftentimes I'll read something and then we'll be having a ah sermon at church that's somewhere totally else in the Bible and seemingly unrelated, but it's like, oh my gosh, I just read about you know that tradition or that you know whatever that they were talking about. um And it's just so enlightening. So I've absolutely loved it.
00:18:42
Speaker
So with that having been said, I would love to just share kind of where I am right this very second. Right now, I've been in Exodus and leading into numbers. And it's just been so cool. And then to to have different conversations, especially Yeah.
00:19:02
Speaker
talking about rebellion and rebellious spirit so i totally as i shared had a rebellious spirit and i can still lean and tend towards that And so when I started reading in through Exodus this time, you know, it's intermingled with some of the, you know, like God's giving the law at this time through the Bible or through Exodus. And it's so they're being brought out of Egypt. And then Moses is up on um the mountain meeting with the Lord. And he's like, write these things down on these tablets. And then it starts to go into lots of details. And so sometimes it can get a little bit in the weeds, but it always, like as soon as I feel like I'm getting into the weeds, I get brought back. And so today, this morning especially, i ended up coming back to, I'm in Numbers. this This morning I was in Numbers, but I went back to where I was in Exodus because I just saw this pattern illuminate that I know my pastor is definitely
00:19:59
Speaker
talked about before, but it was like the Lord illuminating it for me, which is so cool. And he'll do that for you too. The more and more you spend time in his word, he will do that. um So i I've got my Bible right here. if you're listening, which you most likely are, you can't see, but maybe I'll do a clip on social media. Here's my Bible. This is the one that I carry around. i got it for myself. It's green. I like green. Could you tell? um I got it for myself a few years ago because I have my huge Bible that's sitting here on my left, and it is the NLT, which is what I really like dove into at first when I started um when i gave my life to Christ and started diving into the Word. I love that version. um It's what our... church uses for middle and high school ministries because it's very easy to read. The one thing now having you know grown in my faith and gotten a little bit deeper is the NLT version that I have is a study Bible. And so it's got a lot of footnotes and then um it's got some character highlights, like it'll go through and break down ah different characters of the Bible and things of that nature, which can be helpful. What I noticed about that was that I started relying so much on those footnotes because they were there. And it's not a bad thing. It's just that it was hard for me to read the scripture and then not dip down lower you know in the low go footnotes and see, okay, well what does that mean? What does that stand for? well What is this? Instead of now really trying to allow the Lord to direct me through His word,
00:21:33
Speaker
and take me where he wants to go digging for, like Katie says, those treasures um that only that he has just for me, you know, and and he has just for you too, you know, these little treasures. So all that to say, I do tend to put a lot of little sticky notes and tabs. I write directly in my Bible. Some folks don't like doing that. I love it. The one that I have over here on my left-hand side that's My old Bible, I mean, there are so many tabs sticking out of the side. There are so many, as I've said before, tear-stained pages. There's so many dates in the margin and highlights and just thoughts. It's so fun to go back and see, um you know, what the Lord was doing during that time in my life and last time I read that. And, you know, it's just, it's so cool. I absolutely love it.
00:22:20
Speaker
All of that to say, the side notes that I wrote could also be a distraction So I um bought this this Bible to be able to take to church with me. It's smaller. I take it to Bible study as well.
00:22:34
Speaker
there are no i mean There are no footnotes. There are a few little things down at the bottom, but it's just the Bible, and I love it. So all of this to say With a rebellious spirit, I was just thinking about and looking back. Like I said, this morning I was in Numbers, but it took me back to Exodus and I was like, gosh, these people just keep complaining. Like, what is their problem? and in Numbers this morning, I was talking about um when, you know, the death of Aaron and then... how they were thirsty and complaining to well, before Aaron died, Moses and Aaron. But then just complaining to to Moses, like, you brought us out here for us to die. and I was like, wait a second, this fo sounds familiar. So I went back to Exodus and it is, it's this repeated behavior, this repeated pattern of like the Israelites complaining, God hearing them and providing through Moses and Aaron. Yeah.
00:23:30
Speaker
And it's just, it was so cool to me. It was one of those like, You know, there are a number of different spots, but basically a few of the things that I wrote down was like Exodus 16, they were hungry. They complained. The Lord provided manna.
00:23:44
Speaker
Exodus 17, they were thirsty. They complained. The Lord provided water through Moses striking a rock with his rod um as the Lord directed him to and water gushed forth. So he heard their cries and he responded.
00:24:01
Speaker
But they just had this rebellious spirit. And as you read through it, too, you can just hear kind of like their sarcasm in like, you know, you brought us out here to die. We would better off as slaves in Egypt. And it's like, are you even kidding me? Do you know what you're saying? um And so before that, I had written down in the margin back in Exodus earlier in 16 that their heart posture was one of such ingratitude. And at the end of the day, at least for me, I think that boils down to a heart of pride. And over the past four
00:24:35
Speaker
several years, especially recently, I've just in my life seen ultimately often it boils down to pride. I know better. i think I have an answer. i think this is what God should be doing. or i I think I know the answer to the the problem. Ooh, pick me. you know i know best, which is so, so far from the truth. And um that heart of pride and that, you know, ingratitude and our heart posture is just looking inward.
00:25:07
Speaker
What happens inward? We end up complaining that ends up manifesting and coming outward. And I'm sure each of you have experienced as well as I have being around people who bring life and they're positive and they want, they make you want to,
00:25:25
Speaker
Be an encouragement as well. And they're a joy to be around. And then you've been around complainers. This day and age, people call them Karens or Chadds, which I just, both of those are so unfortunate.
00:25:36
Speaker
Especially, i know quite a few lovely Karens. One in particular being my former pastor's wife. I love her. She is a sweetheart. So I don't like that. But anyway, it's no fun being around complainers. And they bring the whole...
00:25:50
Speaker
vibe, the whole energy down of a conversation. And so i just, again, back over in in numbers this morning, I was in numbers 20 and 21. just wrote down on this sticky note, complaining and losing heart, discouragement along the way. That's specifically what it says verbatim in the scripture. But in number 16, it was talking about the men of Korah. And so Korah was the great grandson of Levi, one of the tribes of Israel.
00:26:20
Speaker
And then a lot than it says along with Dathan. Man, I don't always pronounce everything right, so you're just gonna have to give me grace in that. Dathan and Abiram, they were the great-grandsons of Reuben, another tribe of Israel.
00:26:36
Speaker
It says that they rose up along with some of the sons of Israel, so meaning some others that were among the tribes of Israel. And then it says 250 leaders of the congregation.
00:26:48
Speaker
The Bible calls them men of renown, rose up against Moses and Aaron. And so I just thought of the division that that brings. So it's a little bit from here, a little bit from there.
00:27:02
Speaker
And they caused division, which got me to thinking about something that my pastor said a few weeks ago. He was just talking about the Lord and how he's in the business of adding things.
00:27:14
Speaker
And of multiplying, sometimes subtraction, but not division. Division is a tool of the enemy. And so I just that was one of those circles and like full circle moments for me of just like the whole idea of division and how that is definitely a tool of the enemy. And it made me think about like my marriage. It made me think about my family in general, the you know the three of us, my nuclear family, and then beyond. And where there is division, that is not
00:27:48
Speaker
from the Lord. It's just not. He desires to bring unity. So if you find yourself in conversations or you find yourself in a situation where division is being caused, I would just implore you to take a moment, take a step back. Sometimes you have to walk away from a conversation that might not be healthy or edifying or glorifying to the Lord.
00:28:12
Speaker
Ask yourself, Am I contributing to division? And if you are there's no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. There's no shame there, but there is conviction, and that is a good thing, and that's from the Lord. And so just go to Him with it. Repent first and foremost. Repent of the behavior that you have um either knowingly or unknowingly participated in, but go to the Lord with that.
00:28:38
Speaker
Repent. Ask for forgiveness. The Bible says that He is just and faithful to forgive us of our sins when we repent of them. So do that. And then course correct.
00:28:49
Speaker
Don't go down that path anymore. You have a choice. You don't have to. So just my encouragement and two cents for today.

That's what I have been cooking on in my head as I've moved through the Bible. um It doesn't always happen that way. you know Some days it's just reading and, okay Lord, that was a lot getting through numbers, you know or that was a lot, especially when you get into Chronicles and some of 1 Samuel. you know It's a lot of just like, this is what happened. you know It's like ah the office, Dwight Schrute, it is your birthday. Yeah.
00:29:25
Speaker
It's just factual, you know, facts that happen. um But that's part of it too. And the Lord can even use that. But I love those moments when it is brought full circle. So i am going to close out today by asking you to go and like, comment, follow, subscribe to the podcast and share it if it is helpful.
00:29:47
Speaker
do share it. um I've really struggled with like that feeling very self-promotion-y, and I've shared that with many friends. And one friend in particular was just like, it's not... Well, I got to this conclusion myself from the conversation, but i know that the Lord has given me this to do, and I'm not here to just talk to myself. Yeah.
00:30:13
Speaker
So he clearly wants to use it in others' lives. And so I humbly submit that before him and just pray that he would. And so the only way that that can happen is if it gets shared and put out there. So if it's helpful, share it, um especially the stories and testimonies. That really, for me, is just the the best. And I use it every single day. And that's 7 Weeks Coffee. They are 7 Weeks Coffee because at 7 Weeks Gestation, Your little baby is the size of a coffee bean growing inside of you. And so they give 10% of every sale to pregnancy centers and pro-life movements around the country. And so every time you buy coffee and every time you sip coffee, you're drinking coffee and saving lives. That's one of their mottos. And I love it.
