Crystal Palace's Momentum & Upcoming Wolves Match

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Palace podcast on the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Finn Bowden and tonight I am joined by Mr. Alex Way. How are you doing Alex?
00:00:20
Alex
Hi, Finn. Yeah, all good. Thanks, mate. All good. Just um yeah looking forward to another another a Palace game this Saturday, considering now we're winning. So hopefully we can keep that momentum going against Wolves.
00:00:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. And we're also joined by Wale Bakari. How are you doing Wale?
00:00:36
Wale Bakare
Man, I'm really great guys. ah Great to be on the pod tonight. You know, I was catching up with one of the, I think it was, I can't remember, but it was some podcasts on YouTube and they were talking about, it was apparently before the Aston Villa game and there were like five guys and just one of them felt pilots were going to win and They all gave him all loads of whatever, but I'm sure he must be laughing now. But fair play to the guys. Not many Palace fans, you know, gave Palace a chance, but I'm really buzzing at the moment.
00:01:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely, this week seems to have been quite pivotal for a Crystal Palace, seems to be finally the turning point.

EFL Cup or Carabao Cup? A Naming Debate

00:01:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
in what has been an underwhelming season so far, I think it's fair to say. um And actually, we had a reporter in the field. We had Mr. Alex himself venture all the way up to sunny Birmingham for what was, I'm sure, was like on a tropical night on um Wednesday to to just just for us, wasn't it? Just for the Daily Palace team to to cover cover the match. What are your thoughts, Alex? I mean, obviously,
00:01:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace of three to the next round of the of the EFL Cup um Is it quick? Is it the EFL Cup or the Carabao Cup? I can never remember. Is it still the Carabao or?
00:01:53
Alex
I call it the EFL Cup, but I think I'm just old. So I think it is the Carabao Cup, but yeah, EFL Cup I'm going for.
00:01:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I can't even remember what was it before the Carabao Cup was it like the Carlin Cup or something like that or The Freddo the Freddo couple
00:02:03
Alex
Yeah, Carlin Cup. And then there was something else before that, like the Bovril Cup or something, like some random sponsor. Fredo Cup, yeah.
00:02:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
back when Fred Oz were, you know, 5P. Yeah, tell us what your thoughts on the game.
00:02:15
Alex
yeah

Daichi Kamada's Redemption

00:02:22
Alex
ah Yeah mate, we decided to go up last minute so it was a Tuesday night decision um and there was a bit of sense of nervousness driving up because obviously you go all that way and you want to see at least a draw out of it like a good performance um and yeah you wanted something.
00:02:40
Alex
um But yeah, just from the off, we were we were great. um We obviously got that early goal as a header, which is very unusual. I think the away crowd was pretty stunned at that. um But yeah, from there, it was great, really. like you know we We had momentum as they went off, injured, and Villa clawed back into it a bit.
00:03:00
Alex
um And yeah, I mean, I think the main kind of talking point of the night from a player perspective is Daichi Komada. The old saying of game of two halves comes to mind. As soon as he came on, there were some groans amongst the fans. And a bit of yeah a bit of um choice words thrown at him, especially when he gave the ball away and then went and scored. It's just that stage for him at the moment where it's just like, if he does something wrong, he's going to get hammered for it.
00:03:32
Alex
But I tell you what, just seeing that goal live, I just, it puts, it puts hairs on the back of my neck. It's like a classic, you know, shut up, like, this is who I am. I am a good player kind of thing for the team and for the fans as well. And the celebrations, he ran over, knees slide in front of the fans and like,
00:03:51
Alex
the players just obviously absolutely love him and were chuffed for him. Mateta, he tried to walk away and Mateta grabbed him and threw him back in front of the fans and said, go on, that's your moment, mate. Go and celebrate. And he was just, he was getting a lot of love from the fans after

Chalaba's Performance & Team Confidence

00:04:04
Alex
that. um And yeah, I think another sort of key moment was just seeing that game out because Villa are just stacked with quality man and like John Duran just seeing him close up. He is He is a big bloke and he is fast, powerful. He's got it all. He obviously scored against us, which there are a few errors that we could pick apart. But um yeah, I mean, to to see that game out is very impressive. And another player I wanted to highlight was Chalaba, just like
00:04:35
Alex
the the difference within a week of just his composure on the ball. And he did a few like sort of Croif turns in dodgy positions where a week ago he might've got caught out, but it's just the confidence is growing in the team to see that kind of stuff. um Yeah, we had a couple of casualties like Eze and Morton.
00:04:52
Alex
who I think are doubtful for tomorrow's game. But I just feel like Glazen's got the whole squad together at the moment. And when we were celebrating at the end, he had everyone over, you know, we were there for a good five minutes clapping the fans off, clapping the players off and, you know, they were there. And there's there's this sort of real, we're in this together at the moment. And I think That's going to be absolutely massive as as we try and turn around this poor start. um So overall, a great night. We got back about 2 AM. m um And I've only just sort of caught up on some some beauty sleep, you might say. But yes, um it was a great night all around. And I'm glad I made the trip up there. So thank you to Palace for giving us that that memorable win.

Oliver Glasner's Managerial Impact

00:05:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely because as you said it's a big commitment especially midweek to travel across the country and big respect to football football fans for any team really who do that because especially as when there's no guarantee that you'll necessarily see good football or see a win and I think as you said I think it's a real testament to one Oliver Glasner's managerial prowess that he's able been able to take on the pressure and the criticism of the last few weeks and well the last couple of months even and being able to change the mentality around that squad and players who I think have had a very difficult start to their palace careers as you said like with Trevor Chalabar and Daichi Kamada I mean personally for me it's really great to see Daichi Kamada finally sort of proving to everyone what he can do because I think a lot of palace fans who'd never heard of him sort of
00:06:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
had really dismissed him really, and but I think football fans in general who know what he's done at teams like Lazio, Eintracht Frankfurt will know that he's he's no mug. He's actually a very technically gifted footballer and I think he's just struggled a little bit to acclimatise to English football.
00:06:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
but seems to be finding his feet now so good good news Wale what were your thoughts on the on the cup game result and what do you who do you who do you think Palace could potentially get in the next round who would you like to see them get in the next round
00:06:59
Wale Bakare
Well, first of all, I have to say well it was a great win.

Strategic Play Against Villa

00:07:02
Wale Bakare
um You know, what what is particularly impressive for me is the fact that I look at the possession starts from the game and the game against Tottenham, I think it was 34% against Tottenham and 38 against Aston Villa. And, you know, that just goes to show that, you know, um Glassness team i can find a way to get the business done even when they don't have you know the um the most of the ball or much of the ball when they don't create the most chances of the two sides on the pitches about you know taking your chances and we saw that against Tottenham and particularly against Aston Villa to be honest I wasn't very hopeful um of ah of a win against Villa especially con considering they are
00:07:46
Wale Bakare
in a great run of form at the moment. You know, they're top of the Champions League table after three games. ah They, I think, are fourth in the league level on points with Arsenal. They've had some great performances. They've got, just like just as alice um Alex mentioned, they've got very amazing players, and especially attacking Wyson.
00:08:04
Wale Bakare
ah Watkins, Rogers, John Turan, Bailey, like so many, ah you know, amazing talents, and especially the work playing at home. So, us and they've been talking so much about, you know, ah wanting a cop run. So, I honestly thought that it was going to be ah one of those games where Palace would try, just as we've seen in many games this season, and maybe Villa would win, but I was mightily impressed by what I saw. Again, the players turned up. Again, you know, they took chances. Again, there were so many positives, you know, on the pitch. um The only thing that dampened the mood, of course, was the injuries to AZ and Wharton, who, according to Glass, not earlier today, might not be available until after the international outbreak. But,
00:08:51
Wale Bakare
you know it's a great It's a great result. it's um and the The fact that you know Palace are you know moving to the next round ah is great. and you know the The draws were made almost immediately. I think Arsenal, that's what Palace got.
00:09:07
Wale Bakare
and I don't know, that's not a great ball. At the moment, i'm I'm just really positive about anything, because it's going to be a Dabi game. It's another game away. Palace, underdogs, and they will be. you know And I think it does seem like the underdog tag is favoring Palace at the moment, because look at the games that Palace have done well this season. Chelsea, United, Tottenham, Villa.
00:09:35
Wale Bakare
bring on Arsenal, I'm feeling at the moment. But honestly, it was a great result.

Injuries & Match Previews: Wolves & Fulham

00:09:40
Wale Bakare
And I'm particularly happy for Kamada, as you guys mentioned. He's not at a great start to the season. His ability is unquestionable. We've seen him in his previous clubs. We've seen him for the Japanese national team. But for some reason, because of the chopping and changing that we've seen a lot,
00:09:59
Wale Bakare
ah by glass not due to players available and all. um He hasn't been able to really stamp his authority and that's in that team. But when he when he got the chance against Villa took you well took his goal well at a great performance all around him.
00:10:16
Wale Bakare
It was just a fantastic victory, especially considering that it was coming immediately after the Tottenham game, after so many games of not getting a win. I just really hope that ah you know it will continue like this ah into the Wolves and Fulham games in the Premier League.
00:10:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, absolutely. I think you make some excellent points there. And talking of winning, um we have and another game coming straight up. So they're coming thick and fast. So join us in part two, where we will be dissecting the build up to our away away game at the Molyneux. So don't go away.

Crystal Palace vs. Wolves: Season Start Comparison

00:11:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm Finn Boden, and I'm joined by Alex Waite and Wale Bakare. In the first part, we were talking about Palace's cup victory against the villains up in the Midlands. And now we look to another game. God, we seem to be spending a lot of time in that part of the world, don't we? um Tomorrow,
00:11:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace are at the Molyneux, or as I like to think of it, the pyrotechnic ah conference always got mad amounts of flames at that game. Wale, what are your thoughts? ah Is this going to be... First of all, do you think this is another easy opportunity for Palace to get a win? Or do you feel, for example, that maybe Wolves are quite similar to Palace in the way that their season started? What are your thoughts? Tell me, the the floor is yours.
00:12:09
Wale Bakare
Well, yeah, there's quite a number of similarities in the fact that um we've always looked at both sides and felt the results haven't exactly you know told the full story. Wolves have been Amazing in some games. I saw their game against CT and they could easily You know, I've i've gotten a result out of that game, which would have been amazing, which would have been fantastic for them ah Their comeback the ah the other ah the other day against Brighton was also great scoring those two lead goals Eight Nuri got the whoa, by the way is one of my favorite wolves players and You know, he just he's just one of those guys that you know, just gets the job done ah never Almost always has a good game even when the team isn't doing well, but but ah to to answer your question specifically It's not going to be an easy game at the Molyneux Wolves, of course Haven't had a great start to the season. They are yet to you know um Get a victory that we'll be looking to get a victory ah They are one of those teams in the league that have got
00:13:13
Wale Bakare
you know, great talent on the pitch as well. um You know, experienced players considering the fact that so they've been in the league for a number of years now. And then, ah you know, they spent last season with the manager, Anil, who, you know, is is is quite a promising manager. So they're a great side. But that being said, pilots will be looking at that game and will be saying to themselves,
00:13:37
Wale Bakare
After what we've seen at the start of the season, dropping points, losing games that are very winnable. Brentford, West Ham, Melissa, this is one game where you don't want to drop points because ah you know to to survive in the league apart from the top six sides you really want to get the results against you know ah ah those teams that are in and around you and wolves ah seem like one of those teams and pilots will be backing themselves to to get a victory especially um after the result of the last couple of games maybe confidence is a bit low at wolves ah by the fact that they were able to rally themselves back into that game against Brighton confidence is there at the moment for pilots
00:14:21
Wale Bakare
quite sad by the ah injuries to AZ and Wharton. They will the we' be missing the game against Wolves. If they were not missing, I will be a lot more confident at the moment. But despite the fact that those two players were missing, um um i I still think that it's a game that Palace will be backing themselves to get the result. And at the moment, based on you know what the form is, ah yeah it might be just one of those games where Palace will get a victory.
00:14:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. Alex, yeah you mentioned as well, just as while I did the Palace of now, we're starting to build a steady injury list and there's going to be a potentially there's going to be a few big names missing from the lineup tomorrow. That coupled with the fact that I was just looking, I mean, we had the crossover podcast with the Wolves guys yesterday and one of the first things you realize when you look at that ah Wolves team is they've got some really good attacking options.
00:15:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they've got really, in fact, in terms of Eberichie Eze, I would say that the equivalent for walls would be Konya, Mateus Konya. He seems to be like a very, very technically gifted sort of player who likes to bring the ball up from the center of the field, just like Eze does. um What are your thoughts? Do you feel that maybe Because of injuries, it will be too much of an expectation for us to to get a victory. Would you be content with a point away from home? Or do you think with the recent changes and with the recent results that it's more than ah more than feasible for Palace to go in go and win? What are your thoughts, Alex?
00:15:58
Alex
Yeah, so it's a bit tricky because I feel, obviously, le yeah like we've said, the injuries, to as in Watson, are huge. They're two of our most influential players. But like on the other side of it is that we've got a back five now who um have conceded once in the last two games, or actually twice in the last three games. They've been quite quite solid, other than a couple of errors here and there.
00:16:25
Alex
um And I think that playing free games within a week, I think for the defence is actually um can be positive because it builds familiarity. You know, they'll have confidence of of keeping a clean

Injury Impact on Palace's Strategy

00:16:38
Alex
sheet against Tottenham. um So I think in that sense, it will be a positive. But then as you get further up the pitch, our our options become less. um And I must say, by the end of the game on ah Wednesday, Mateta was flagging is putting it, putting it nicely. He was like on his knees, man. um Trying to, trying to do the press was, he was finding it tough. And I think when you play Jimin and Ketia, which probably looks likely on Saturday.
00:17:07
Alex
you don't really have another option from the bench, which is a concern, like especially in the central striker position. um So that's where my sort of concern is. And also if we pick up another injury to Anketi or Mateta, our options become very, very thin. um But I think that, yeah, with our momentum, I think we'll you know a point would be good at this stage. like We just have to take what we can get to try and pull away from the bottom three. um And I think Wolves as well, they're similar to us. They haven't performed badly. um you know They've had a few high scoring results, but they almost held Man City. Great comeback, like Wale said, against Brighton. So they are a dangerous side, and I think it'll be very even. um Our game, ah but because we've played the extra game that might, you know
00:17:58
Alex
play against us, but I think either way, Glazen is going to stick with this high pressing um system and I can't see him like, you know, go in defensive and trying to see out a point and he's going to, I think he's going to go all guns blazing, which for the neutral is good, but for us, I don't know, the players might need a rest after, ah after Saturday. yeah
00:18:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
As you said, we sort of, I think he, if we'd maybe had a better start to the season, it would be less pressure to accumulate points. But I think there's definitely been a message from the hierarchy that we need to move up the table sooner rather than later. So as you said, I think he's probably going to be quite gung ho in terms of.
00:18:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um going for those winds, if possible. um As you said, great for the neutral, a little bit a little bit touchy for us watching my my my face through my hand. Yeah, and something else that Palace and Wolves share in common is obviously Sam Johnston, who transferred to Wolves over the summer,
00:18:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's been interesting because we were talking about this in with the wolves guys that ah in the Daily Wolves team about there seems to be a bit of a ah bit of a, you know, obviously Arsenal had David Raya and I can't remember the name of the other guy.
00:19:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Ramsdale, thank you Wale, they sort of had a ah rotational rotational battle with those guys to see who could fill that number one spot. Seems to be a sort of a similar, a bit more of a low key thing going on with Wolves at the moment between Jose Saar and Sam Johnston, who are both very keepers, but I think are quite different in terms of style and what they bring to a team. So on that note, we're going to take another little quick ad break. And when we come back,
00:19:15
Wale Bakare
Brownfield.
00:19:44

Welcome back to part three of the Daily Palace podcast. I'm Finn Bowden, and I'm joined by Wylie Bakare and Alex Waite. We've been talking about Palace's victory against Villa in the Cup. Their potential victory against Wolves tomorrow at the Molyneux, fingers crossed. but um And on on the subject of Sam Johnston, who obviously used to play for Palace and is now at Wolves, and was a very, very good keeper, I must say, for us when he did play.
00:20:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Palace keepers throughout the ages. I'm going to go with our seasoned palace veteran, Alex, as as it but as he's been had palace inflicted on him much many more times than Wale. Who are your standout palace keepers from over the years? I have a feeling, there's definitely one name I feel that will get mentioned, but go ahead.
00:21:09
Alex
Yeah, so no I've not shied away from this fact in previous pods that I i love Julian Spironi. As far as just just men in general, not just footballers, just as a man, he's ah he's a great bloke. You'd love to have him, if you're playing any sport or like in any job, you'd like to have someone like him on your side, just loyal, dependable.
00:21:32
Alex
um Just a solid bloke, really. like yeah what a great What a great guy. And he made four hundred appear over 400 appearances for us. um Only second to Wilf in the entire Palace history, which is great. um And yeah, I think a game that sums him up really was the Brighton playoff final at the Amex, where we were 1-0 up.
00:21:59
Alex
I think it was Ashley Barnes, who played for Brighton then, went one on one, clipped it, it was going in the top corner and he just somehow palmed it onto the crossbar. And it was just like...
00:22:10
Alex
just thank thank you Spironi again he's saved us so many times it's just yeah the amount of times he saved us so when we were rubbish in the championship just uncountable really um and then as much as I love Spironi I also loved his um competitor Gabor Kirai as well um That was just, you're talking about goalkeeper battles. That was that was an epic one for Pallas. Kirai, just the complete, like Spironi was reliable. Kirai was a bit of a maverick wearing his grey tracksuit bottoms with questionable stains down them. um Just, yeah, he was, ah I used to sit behind him in the um and the family stand at Pallas, like when I was younger.
00:22:58
Alex
And he would just swear to himself in Hungarian like constantly. It's like, we'd score a goal and he'd turn around and start swearing. And it's like, what are you doing, man? We just scored a goal, celebrate or something. um But I think he's just he's just like a tough bloke. He's just really high expectations.
00:23:16
Alex
um But yeah, he yeah he kept Spironi out of the team for a while, which was quite interesting. But yeah, for me, there's no beat in Spironi. Manos de Dios, I think his nickname was, um for some Palace fans. But yeah, what a legend.
00:23:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry about that, don't know don't know what happened there. and We had a minor technical difficulty. um Yeah, so going back to what Alex was saying. um Yeah, no, like Gabor Kirali, unbelievable player. like i still fit what I still see, for example, when I'm watching like Park Football and you see a keeper with like trousers on, always makes me think of Gabor Kirali.
00:23:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Some years ago, I was actually on holiday in Budapest and we were sat in a bar drinking beer and watching. There was Hungarian football on the television and I, and as we'd been walking around, it was my first time in Hungary.

Gabor Kiraly: A Personal Anecdote

00:24:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
I noticed a lot of the streets were called kiraly. So I was imagining, Oh, that must be like the equivalent of like Johnson or Smith or something in this part of the world. It's like quite a common name.
00:24:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I thought, Oh, I missed the big band. And lo and behold, I looked on the television and who was in goal for one of the teams. It was the, it was Gabo Kirali. And I thought myself, he must be like almost 50 years old and he's still doing it.
00:24:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was like, for fair play. I mean, he's, if he's, if he's still got the skills, I don't think he did. But, um, and then Julian Spironi.
00:24:32
Wale Bakare
He won't feel hungry, he's on period.
00:24:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah That's it. And then Julian Spironi was like, there's not many keepers who have their own like Argentinian restaurant in South London, which sadly I never managed to get myself down to, but apparently was the bee's knees. But yeah, so hopefully it might, Spironi's might make a comeback, but maybe not. I doubt it. Hopefully there'll be a, there'll be a sequel, but Wale, tell us who, which palace keepers stand out to you? Is it Julian Spironi as well? Or have you got, Grabble Karale or have you got some other ones?
00:25:04
Wale Bakare
Well, to be honest, I was going to go spirany, but then I checked and I saw, oh, it's Alex today. I knew, oh, Alex is definitely going spirany. So I thought, I'll go someone else. It was, it was going to be one of way and energy of incentive Gaita for me. But then ah I finally went for Gaita because of the fact that I did, you know, like him from his days at Valencia, many years ago when, you know, Unai Emery was manager.
00:25:33
Wale Bakare
And when he came to Pallas, relegated, you know, NSE to the bench, made a lot of appearances for Pallas. I think he had about 149 odd appearances, not a lot of clean sheets, of course, for a goalkeeper in a Pallas team, wasn't a lot. But I'm not sure there's many that's had ah you know, that much Premier League appearances. Of course, Peroni had a lot of appearances. It was at the time when, you know, Palace were in the championship. But um for for for many years, under Roy, under, well, it was almost always Roy Orton anyway. But for many years, I've been sent a guy that was, you know, ah between the sticks. And he did have some interesting games. um I, you know, i I saw a lot of him at Valencia. I was at halfway for a while.
00:26:23
Wale Bakare
I think he didn't have a great finish to his palace career though. I think he did fall out with the club after he was replaced by Sam Johnston and he Eden he wasn't very happy about it But then you could forgive him eventually because Johnston, you know add almost a similar end to his stay up Alice at the end of the day as well I guess goalkeepers just never love it when they're relegated to the bench because they know That you could be on the bench for a very long time for for outfield players. Maybe the chance will come you know in the game, but goalkeepers really get injured and
00:27:02
Wale Bakare
you know, um for a team like Palace, not many games at that time, so they they just never enjoyed staying on the bench. But Vincente Guaita, for me, did have some amazing time in the Premier League, you know, for Palace.
00:27:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. I think it's really sad, sort of the way his career came to an end at Palace. Weirdly enough, I saw him playing for Celta Vigo last year after he'd left us against Barcelona.
00:27:23
Wale Bakare
help
00:27:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it was a bit but bit sweet really, because again, I thought he was an excellent goalkeeper for us and was like, clearly like, x was an excellent quality player.

um But for whatever reason, as you said, I think he was obviously and unhappy at having to compete for that spot. Being a goalkeeper is sort of one of the most difficult in terms of that because there is only one ah One slot in the team. Whereas for example an outfield player can ah Can maybe slot into another position or learn to do something but it's very rare nowadays in modern football You wouldn't see many goalkeepers like playing up front if they and if they needed to I'm just thinking of David James that time under Stuart Pierce Nedemon you has a really great story about that actually
