Introduction to Hosts and Episode

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to another edition of the Daily Palace podcast. I'm your host, Finn Bowden, and today I'm joined by Alex Waite. How you doing, Alex?
00:00:19
Alex
Hey Finn, yeah all good thanks, all good. All good to be back on the pod after what seemed like an eternity of an international break. So good, good to be back and talking about Crystal Palace and the Premier League.

Guest Introduction: Wale Bakare's Commitment

00:00:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we're also joined by Wale Bakare, who's dialing in all the way from Nigeria. This is like how dedicated it is to the Daily Palace podcast. He's like, so if we lose him at any point, it's because of a dodgy internet connection. But Wale, how are you doing, brother? Tell us.
00:00:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
You'll have to enjoy the the heat for all of us, mate yeah the the weather in the UK. Very, very windy and cold. And yeah, so let's we've you lightly touched upon it just then, the Palace's game against Villa at Villa Park at the weekend. So yeah, I mean, it's a bit of a tough one. It's a bit of a weird one, isn't it? um Because some would say that that was two points lost, and some would say that's a point gained. um So obviously, the score was 2-2. Ismaila Saar and Justin Deboni getting his first goal for Palace.
00:01:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And then unfortunately, just Palace, sort of but the story of our season, just unable to unable to hold on defensively and conceding two goals in that game. um But Alex, what are your thoughts? Do

Match Review: Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa

00:01:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
you feel like it was a total capitulation? Do you feel like it was disappointing? Or do you feel like Palace really earned that point? Or is it somewhere in between? What are your thoughts?
00:01:43
Alex
I think if you think about it before the game, um we would have definitely taken a point, would have bitten your hand off to take a point away at Villa, considering how strong they are at the moment. um But after the game, I still think I'm happy with with a point, um even though he gave away the lead twice. I still think a point away at Villa is good.
00:02:05
Alex
And it's a building block. you know We're unbeaten now in, I think, four of the last five, which you know is all momentum that will help us get out of the the bottom three, which is the immediate task. um Just so on the game as a whole, though, I think.
00:02:18
Alex
A draw was probably fair, like both teams had plenty of chances. um And Villa, you know, Watkins did what he does, took it round tender and popped it in. um And yeah, like, Deveni's goal was an absolute peach of a finish. Like, that that guy is, I'm just thinking about the upcoming games and I'm like, who is going to come in and replace him at the moment? You know, he's a young guy.
00:02:42
Alex
playing out of his boots, going from strength to strength. Some of the the other guys have underperformed massively this season. And this this guy is like, what is he, 20, 21? And he's coming in and...
00:02:53
Alex
you know, showing them how it's done, really, like that run that he made to get on the end of that cross to finish was like, you know, it's the stuff that ah gets the fans up and gets us going. So I think he's been a real bright spark. um And he's someone I'd like to see starting going forward, at least, you know, until he does something that means we we drop him, you know. um But yeah, I think on the whole It's another point um we're keeping in in touching distance of Ipswitch, which is just really weird to say, considering, you know,
00:03:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's it's it's far it's it's it's just goes to show you isn't it pre-match preseason even predictions are just such a load of tosh like I mean if you think we think back to over the summer all the grand plans that we had ah here at the team and

Player Performances and Team Form

00:03:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
we were discussing our Palace are gonna be doing this we're gonna be knocking on the door of Europe and as you said we're chasing the tail skirts of Ipswich at the moment so mighty Ipswich who
00:03:46
Alex
Yeah, mighty up switch.
00:03:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
who also managed to get a point against Man United on the weekend. So the new, the brand, another version of the brand new Man United. um So obviously, yeah, so some some good performances from from some Palace players, particularly the goal scorers, Ms. Mela Saar and Justin Devaney.
00:04:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
and also a fantastic ah penalty save. walle is it kind of is it Would you say it's it's uplifting and a positive to see some players starting to step up and sort of stake a claim in this team now? I suppose it's been not been a great season for Palace so far and there's been lots of injuries, but was it nice to see those positives at the weekend?
00:04:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we might have lost Wile slightly. um Yeah, so when he when he comes when he comes back to us. um But yeah, Alex, what what are your thoughts? Do you do you feel like, um do you feel it was nice to see that it's made a SAR and Justin Devaney get those good performances under their belt? And also, I mean, it's great to see Dean Henderson doing a slide as well after the set. I think it was the second goal, wasn't it?
00:05:00
Alex
Yeah, that was amazing. um You don't see that too often from the goalkeeper, the old knee slide. It's more of a striker's celebration, isn't it?
00:05:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
as It is a result for more of the outfield players, isn't it? Exactly. But I mean, it was great save from Dean as well.
00:05:15
Alex
Yeah, excellent penalty stop. um My first worry was that, you know, the rule about jumping off your line might come into place. He sprung forward quite enthusiastically, but to get a palm on it and just get it away is like unreal. It shows why he is like in the England squad so consistently, and he has made some saves for us this season.
00:05:35
Alex
where it shows the quality that he is, just like to see him do it a bit more consistently. And I think, you know, for Watkins goal in particular, he maybe rushed out a bit too, too eagerly, could have stayed up for that.
00:05:48
Alex
But it's nitpicking, I

Dean Henderson's Goalkeeping Prowess

00:05:50
Alex
think, like he is a great goalkeeper.
00:05:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:05:52
Alex
um And there was this, you know, at the start of the season between him and Sam Johnston, it was like, I think we've made the right choice on balance. um But yeah, and Saar as well, like, Good to see him get on the score sheet.
00:06:06
Alex
Against Wolves, he had so many chances, mate. And I was like, who is this guy? like what like I'm really questioning him. um
00:06:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
got in some excellent positions and then just was unable to sort of just do the final bit. And I think, as you said, he could have easily had a hat trick in that game against Wolves.
00:06:20
Alex
Yeah.
00:06:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I feel like, yeah, just even that that performance by siren, that game was indicative of our season just close, but just not that good enough to get it over the line.
00:06:24
Alex
Yeah.
00:06:37
Alex
Yeah, he I think hopefully he'll come in, like now he's got his goal, he'll start scoring regularly, but then we've got Eze back and it's like D drops are maybe. um and keep Deveni because he started in that more attacking role. So Glazen's got some some considerations there, but Sara's, he's positive and he's he's got, he's obviously showing glimpses of form, but you just got to put it in the net. Like the same with Venkatiya, like they just got to score more frequently. They get in the right positions, but just want to see that finish in touch, you know.
00:07:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. And I think I've said it just multiple times over the last few weeks, but I feel that as soon as you get that first goal, then suddenly it starts becoming a regular thing. A bit like Jean-Philippe Mateta. I know that once he scores, usually he tends to go on ah a bit of a run. um Yeah. I mean, lastly as well, obviously Aston Villa are having a pretty great season in terms of, especially in terms of their Champions League ah campaign. It's quite, it's been a funny old season in terms of team performances and who's beaten who.
00:07:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
For example, even Man City now going on, ah is it a five game a losing streak?
00:07:45
Alex
yeah
00:07:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, that in itself, we could probably do the whole pod on. But the fact that Palace have had some pretty poor performances against ah opposition we think we should probably be beating and then managed to get results against teams like Tottenham, for example, who beat Man City at the weekend.
00:08:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um it's kind It's kind of interesting that we seem to be getting results against some of the better the better opposition.
00:08:10
Alex
Yeah.
00:08:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And I don't know, what are your thoughts?
00:08:12
Alex
Hmm.
00:08:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
does it is that Is that a positive sign, do you think? Is that a sign that maybe it's just it's close to clicking and it just maybe needs a few more adjustments or?
00:08:23
Alex
Yeah, I think you're right. I think with every team we've played, other than Fulham, sorry for saying that, because I know know you went to that game.
00:08:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
one a
00:08:33
Alex
um Yeah, sorry, mate, to bring that up. Yeah, other than the Fulham game, it's it's all been quite even, like, every performance we've been in it, or it's been like a one goal defeat, or, you know, very narrow score line, or we've had chances and we've just not quite got there.
00:08:49
Alex
So I think the performances are there and I think this is why I like Parrish and the hierarchy of stuck with glasnug they've seen the same and it's like we're just like on the edge of this like doing what we did at the end of last season and going on a run where it all clicks and it it did against in the wins

Palace's Inconsistent Performances: A Concern?

00:09:05
Alex
against Spurs and Villa two big teams like who were fighting for top four.
00:09:09
Alex
it did come together and it's like well if we can compete with them and we can do it with City and Arsenal, Chelsea, like all the big teams which we've shown already but it is very palace also like it's hard to explain that we lose to Fulham at home but then we'll go and beat Newcastle at home and Man City like that it's just this thing that we have at Palace and we do that So nothing surprises us, you know, like we could have a ah bad start to the season like we did and then go on a massive winning run. It's just the roller coaster that is Crystal Palace, unfortunately.
00:09:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
As you said, it is very just typical of ah of this club and as fan as as me and you both know as being fans for however many years, like it's just, yeah, I don't see it changing anytime soon.
00:09:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um We're just going to take a quick little ad break. And when we come back, we're going to be talking about January transfer windows. So don't go away.

We did have Wale Bukari, but I think Wale's internet connection out in Nigeria has ah has failed him. So hopefully um he's able to rejoin us. But if not, we will persevere on and hopefully he'll jump back on at some point. But um yeah.
00:10:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
So obviously, so we're now going into December, um Alex, there'll be quite a few fixtures before the transfer window in January. But first of all, I'll ask you what I hope is a simple question. um But do you think there needs to be major additions to the squad or do you think it's a case of the squad's actually OK? We just need to wait for some people to come back from injury and Are there other options? What are your thoughts?
00:11:27
Alex
It's a bit of an interesting question, this one, because you look at our squad and you sort of think, oh, so there's plenty of quality there to at least stay up, which again, it's like weird to consider at this point. But um when you look at our depth, it's just, it's quite, it's lacking really. Like, there's a couple of

Squad Depth and Transfer Market Moves

00:11:48
Alex
positions in particular, um where a couple of players have gone down injured and you thought, oh,
00:11:54
Alex
Oh swear word, this is ah this is this is a bit dodgy for us. So you've got like Tyrik Mitchell and Daniel Munoz, who are like the only players who can play in those positions for us. And we have no cover at all for those two. So it's like, well, you've got Joel Ward, who can play there. But it's like, we need cover for those two, right? In wingbacks, we can't just have fullbacks filling in or like,
00:12:24
Alex
you know these old players in the squad trying to fill that position. um So I don't think we need like major adjustments but I think we do need a couple of bit more depth in certain positions. um I think we also need maybe a couple of more attackers to challenge the likes of Nketiya and Mateta and push those guys on because at the moment Mateta's doing all of it um or trying to do all of it to his best abilities but we need a genuine like challenge for those guys. um Yeah I think like on the whole we're okay and I think we've got players coming back like Riyadh, Wharton
00:13:02
Alex
um you know, Chris Richards has just come back as well. So we've got fairly good depth, but yeah, I think those wing back positions are a major issue we need to address and maybe in the attack. But I think otherwise I'm quite happy with the squad. I think we should be all right. Yeah. What do you reckon? What were your thoughts on it?
00:13:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I totally agree. I mean, I think there was quite a lot of investment in the summer, in particular players like Eddy and Kettier. And we haven't really been able to see the best of him yet for a multitude of factors. um And it could be a case where it might be a good idea to get competition in for him. But then also, do we want to rule out having Because I believe that he could, I i still think Eddie and Kettier can come good. I think also during the film game, I mean, one of the standout things from that game for me was Daichi Kamada, and not necessarily in a good way. like I think he's obviously a really good footballer, and he's been able to have really good seasons in both the Bundesliga and Serie A. But the Premier League is like a different animal.
00:14:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just don't know if he has the tenacity and the ruthlessness, I would even say, to sort of play in the Premier League. And I think he's a great football. I just don't know if it necessari necessari set and this style of football necessarily suits him. And it's a real shame because I would love to see it work out for him. But I could also quite potentially see him leaving in January and maybe going out on loan or finding a different club because obviously I think we only signed up on a We signed him on a free contract so so as a free agent.
00:14:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I don't know how that would work, particularly. um I also said to my dad as well, because he almost chimes in with this every week.
00:15:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's like, Raxaki scored again. and it's like it's But that being said, I also understand that, yeah, we could recall him from, I think, Sheffield United, where he's at the moment.
00:15:06
Alex
Yeah.
00:15:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But that's no guarantee that in see then he would suddenly start scoring for us in the Premier League. Championship is slightly different. But it would be great if he did. But also, maybe Oliver Glassner doesn't really fancy him that much or doesn't think he's ready yet. But um it would be an option. It would be great to see if Jesterin could come back and contribute a few goals. Because I think that's i think as you said just now, like I think that's our major problem really is we're not scoring enough and we're conceding too many.
00:15:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
which sounds like quite obvious what not to do in football. But unfortunately, that has been the story of Crystal Palace so far in the 24-25 season. um is Is there one player that realistically stands out for you as a potential signing? Like someone that you think from another team, maybe in one of the teams around us in the Premier League or from the Championship, of someone to someone you've seen and you've got,
00:16:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
general I'd love to see them playing for us at Palace. Anyone?
00:16:17
Alex
oh ah so many There's so Yes, like everyone except our players, basically.
00:16:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
um you one
00:16:24
Alex
um as ah just like There's so many players we've missed out on or that we've been linked with who've gone to other Premier League clubs, especially some some of the guys from South London as well, like Emil Smith-Rowe, for example, who tore us apart the other week.
00:16:40
Alex
He comes from Croydon. Why are we not trying to get this over the line? like and we've got We've got players now like Chalaba, like Nketi, like

Potential Squad Signings for Crystal Palace

00:16:50
Alex
Eze, who all grew up in South London. And it's like, we've obviously got a bit of appeal for those kind of players. So it's a shame to miss out on someone like Emil Smith-Roe, but then we have been linked with players like who are doing really well and are like the talismem for their team, like Jared Bowen.
00:17:07
Alex
um I think we were linked with Alexander Isaac, who faced on Saturday for a bit. um And I think, yeah, like missing out on those players is like a bit of a shame for us. Like, I guess I know there's like an overall financial plan that you can't spend big on some of these players, but they are ones that I look at and I'm like,
00:17:27
Alex
our fortunes could be a bit different, especially in the post-wilf era, that we need players who have that confidence, like, alright, Mateo has his scoring runs, but he's not a, ah like, seven out of 10 every week kind of player, whereas Jared Bowden is, for example, um or Emil Smith-Roe is like an 8 out of 10 player every week.
00:17:48
Alex
like they just They have that level that we some of the players that we sign don't have. um I think Eze is as well, but he hasn't done it this season really. So yeah, my pick would be Emil Smith-Roe, but obviously he's just gone to Fulham, so kind of a miracle if we signed him, but it won't.
00:17:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:18:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I agree. I think, as you said, when I saw we were linked with him over the summer, I was really excited. But then I also, I wasn't that surprised when he went to Fulham because I just thought financially we weren't going to be able to compete with them. um And yeah, maybe they offered him a better contract and better terms than than we could. um Yeah, I'm trying to think who I would have. Who would I have in the Palace squad at the moment? I'd like some goals. i mean ah in It's realistically, well, unrealistically, I'd love Erling Harland, but that's not going to happen.
00:18:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:18:43
Alex
Oh yeah, maybe on loan in January, you know.
00:18:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
and you know cause thing To be fair, things aren't going great in a city, but I don't think we're going that badly.
00:18:49
Alex
yeah
00:18:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, I don't know. I just feel like even someone like, I'm going to put it out there, maybe someone even like Tammy Abraham ah to come, but the problem is I think he enjoys, I think he really enjoys living in Italy and he's doing OK with AC Milan, as far as I'm aware, but...
00:19:09
Alex
He was playing tonight. I was watching AC Milan before we came on and he was him and Fiaco Tamori were playing to English lads.
00:19:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah.
00:19:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:19:17
Alex
But yeah, like again, they're two players that, you know, would suit us. But I think that, yeah, they're set in Italy, like you said, like they've been there for a few years. So.
00:19:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
very difficult to persuade someone to leave Italy for a crudin, but, hey, you know what, I came back
00:19:30
Alex
Yeah.
00:19:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
from the sunny hills of Barcelona. Yeah, no. So it'd be interesting. But I think, yeah, realistically, itd be I think we've we've taken players like Michael Elise and Eberichiezze from the championship. So maybe it's a good policy, again, to have a look at which players are performing one in the championship. And I think we so we tend to do well with players as well who've been at other clubs but not sort of broken through.
00:20:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And just may you know what I mean? Like with Michael Elise, he had been a Chelsea, had been a Man City. Isaiah had been at Sunderland, had been at Fulham, then breaks broke through at QPR. So I think it's definitely um worth us, and financially probably as well, better for us to look at maybe some acquisitions from the championship. But then I agree with you. I don't think there has to be drastic changes. I think the injury list,
00:20:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
With some of those players returning, I think it's a different story for our season and for results over the next few weeks. We're going to take one more short little ad break. And when we come back, we're going to talk briefly about Palace's game against Newcastle. So don't go away.

I haven't got my glasses on. um And I rather stupidly have left them in another room. So I've just... ah ah made a mess of that glu that podcast read.
00:21:32
Alex
ah think it sounded better i like
00:21:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sorry the podcast overlords. I'll be right from behind and show straight away after this. and Welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast. I'm joined by Alex Worry.
00:21:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Unfortunately, I think Worry is not going to be rejoining us for his stint. It was a shame because I was looking forward to hearing his thoughts. um Yeah, it's been great podcast so far.
00:21:58
Alex
I think it sounded better.
00:21:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:22:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, so Palace's next game is against Newcastle. So you mentioned Alexander Isaac in the last part, Alex. What are your thoughts? what are you Do you feel optimistic going into this game? Or do you feel that, again, Palace would do well to get a point from this at least? um Is it a case now where Palace are just going to have to scramble for every possible point? Or are you more relaxed? What are your thoughts?
00:22:26
Alex
I think it'll be a really scrappy game if I'm honest, like Newcastle are a bit of a team that gets up people and puts the challenges about and are quite physical, like Joel Linton in the middle was just like a unit.
00:22:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
too.
00:22:43
Alex
So I'm quite excited. I'm excited in some ways to see him versus the core. Now the core is back. ah That's going to be a midfield battle for the ages, I think. um But yeah, they're such a dangerous team and like, yeah, he's obviously goal scoring record speaks for itself. Then I've got Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, just like I'm real players who are at the top of their game at the moment. So

Preview: Upcoming Match Against Newcastle

00:23:07
Alex
we've got to be really cautious. but We turned them over last year at home. right And that they are the kind of team that has got a i um dodgy performance in them. And we just got to hope that that comes on Saturday. you know They got got beaten by a West Ham last night quite convincingly. um And I think that will give us confidence that we can do similar at Celos Park. um Just like, sorry to bring it up again, but considering how we played against Fulham at home before a break the international break.
00:23:37
Alex
um I'm not trying to give you PTSD or anything. they
00:23:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah so but anyways here I mean, the so I think the sad thing is, is I wasn't overtly surprised. I think just from years of watching Crystal Palace, even though it was probably the worst we've played this season, it's not the worst I've ever seen us.
00:23:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's just like, I just sat there and just going like, yeah, it's about right.
00:23:57
Alex
yeah
00:24:02
Alex
Yeah, it's we have like a couple of those a season. Under Roy, it was like every other third game or something. You'd have a game like that. But um yeah, against Newcastle, I just want to see a bit more positivity, like how we were against Spurs, you know putting the tackles in, getting the crowd up for it, um you know playing on the front foot a bit.
00:24:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
who
00:24:21
Alex
We've got players back now. Eze is supposed to be back Saturday. Our squad's coming back together. So you want to see that click a bit. um Yeah, like I said earlier, I want to see the venue start in because he brings something, a boost to the crowd um against Fulham and he was like one of our better players. um So yeah, you know a bit more positivity. I think if we come out again with a point.

Again, it's progress like Newcastle are very good. So I think for those games, you have to come away with something. Just any losses at this point, where we're in disaster, man.
00:24:56
Alex
I know it's a bit overkill to say that. But it is that stage like if you draw if you lose your five points behind, and then your eight points behind, and all of a sudden you lose sight.
00:25:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:25:07
Alex
you know So yeah, a point would be fine.
00:25:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
i I think as you said, I think we're running out of breathing room. I think it's OK initially. to not have great results. But then when the other teams around you in that position start to pick up results, as Wolves did, for example, a week at the weekend, it becomes a bit concerning. But I'm also very confident that Glazna will steer the guys in the right direction. And I think as well with the defense as well, particularly, it will just click eventually. I think we've got quite a good squad depth in terms of our central defenders. And I'm really hopeful.
00:25:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
that when Eddie and Ketia returns and is fit, he'll be able to get a few goals as well. So, yeah, fingers crossed. Also, who's the, I can never remember his name.
00:25:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
You might know this, Alex. Who's the assistant um at Newcastle? It's weird that we talk about someone's assistant. There's almost...
00:26:04
Alex
Oh, um, Jason Tindall.
00:26:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jason Timble.
00:26:06
Alex
Yeah.
00:26:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:08
Alex
Yeah. He's the, um, he's still like, he's a bit of a character, isn't he?
00:26:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:26:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
right
00:26:12
Alex
So Eddie Howe's quite chilled and reserved and then he's ah like spouting off all the time.
00:26:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
is He is. He likes to give it a bit, doesn't he? He likes to sort of, I don't know, he's a bit of a proverbial stirrer. I was trying to think of the best way to navigate that phrase.
00:26:32
Alex
I like that we've now replaced it with proverbial.
00:26:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Basically, he just needs a big wooden spoon, right? so
00:26:38
Alex
yeah
00:26:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
and um But yeah, be interesting. As he said, I think they're a very physical team. So I think Palace are definitely going to have to match them on that set, in that sense. And yeah, but here's hoping, as ah now I'm going to bring it up after the full game.
00:26:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
but early one is The way The only way is up. Unless you get relegated, which is literally going down. But I'm
00:27:01
Alex
It could happen. It could happen, but unfortunately. for us yeah No worries, Finn.
00:27:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
hopeful we were it won't get to that point. I want to say a massive thank you to Alex Waite for joining me tonight.
00:27:13

00:27:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
No worries. I also want to thank Wailei Bakari for his brief intro at the beginning. I think we've sadly lost him in the podcast abyss.
00:27:24
Alex
If you listen closely, you can hear him from Nigeria saying, thanks, guys.
00:27:26
