Introduction and Podcast Welcome

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to Daily Palace podcast, brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Joe Lodge, and I'm feeling refreshed having spent my Tuesday watching a relaxingly uneventful game of football. I heart John Fleetmatetta and John Fleetmatetta hearts me. ah With me today is Dan Tanner. How you doing, Dan?
00:00:32
Dan Tanner
I'm doing all right. I'm very much getting the feeling of deja vu from yesterday. So weren't we doing this exact thing the other
00:00:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
We were doing this exact thing this exact time in 24 hours ago.
00:00:44

time about an hour so
00:00:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's all getting quite Bill Murray up in here. There should be some variation tomorrow probably with the potential crossover with the city lads.

Palace vs Ipswich Match Recap

00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Today we're going to review Palace's 1-0 win away at Portman Road. and discuss some unwanted attention that Pallas' captain may have brought to the team. This has been in the news the last few days and briefly touched on the Eagles third round ah FA Cup draw. So Tuesday nights under the lights, Pallas got their first win, first away you win, sorry, of the season,
00:01:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Was the 1-0 a deserved result for you down in this one?
00:01:38
Dan Tanner
um From what I saw, of like the highlights and everything, I think it was a very much deserved performance. We we basically called what ah Palace's strengths were going to be in yesterday's podcast, them being very good on the counter and Ipswich not being quite sort of talented enough to deal with like Eze and Mateta. they Them linking up was just, ah yeah, Ipswich couldn't handle them.
00:02:07
Dan Tanner
take you as a sort of movement. He was going from one side to the other. And I think you even got a couple of shots off, especially in the box, which is something I've definitely um commented on over the last few months of. he can If he wants to try and get a couple more goals, try and make him a little bit more high percentage.
00:02:25
Dan Tanner
um And Mateta's goal was, well, it was

Tactical Analysis: Counter-Attacking Strategy

00:02:29
Dan Tanner
class. It was a nice chip across the keeper. And I know you're looking forward to ah talking about it, Joe. I can see it on your face. He's like, Mateta's going to go. I want to talk about it.
00:02:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
but just There you go. and he go i mean We'll but will come come back to that. I've got some questions fun to ask on that. But and mean I agree, I think, as our overall performance 1L was It was a very deserved result for Palace. Epic did a really good job of striking the balance between solidity and creativity. It would have been easy in a way to go there and think, we're the established Premier League club, we've got to impose ourselves on the game, be aggressive. We did that to a certain extent, but it was actually had about 55% possession. Palace used their press
00:03:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
in a more restrained way than they did earlier in the season. Not so they weren't putting pressure on the ball, but they were doing it in a way which stopped Ipswich building up rather than a way which was trying to hurry.
00:03:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
possession off them and it was very effective and didn't get dragged too far out of their own shape, the palace boys in that sense. So limited the room for Ipswich to attack.

Performance Review: Solidity and Creativity Balance

00:03:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
It wasn't perfect, they had some promising attacks from wide areas which some of them Palace dealt with well, some of them they got a bit lucky with maybe no one quite connecting with some dangerous bulls from lights of Hutchinson and Davis but on the whole I think and's saying it's encouraging performance it was it was the sort of most undramatic positive result the Palace have had all season when it was competent
00:04:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
They went in seemingly with calm heads and feeling they are the experienced prem team, the team with the quality. And if they keep organized, it will show. And you know it maybe wasn't as entertaining um as other games or as fluid, but it was it was pretty effective and yeah I think fairly encouraging. um But on that follow-up question, Dan,
00:04:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is this what you would describe as an enjoyable match?
00:04:46
Dan Tanner
I wouldn't have particularly gone enjoyable because looking at the stats, it was very like they were both going, it's almost like a rock and a hard play. They were both, about 50-50 possession more or less, attack through a kind of equal as well. And towards the end, we could have considered a very, very silly little goal, sort of flash in front of, flash across the six-yard box and could have been a sitter almost like once we had ah new castle playing Newcastle the other day. So it's still not completely faultless. We just got we got very lucky especially I think there was a ah Henderson save which he didn't really know anything about and it just hit his knee and just stopped.

Changing Play Style: Defense Focus

00:05:32
Dan Tanner
So we've got we rode our luck a little bit and it was nowhere near as a dominating kind of performance that we did against Newcastle but it was competent enough
00:05:44
Dan Tanner
and against a team like Ipswich we should be trying to get a 1-0 result is fine it's three points it doesn't matter how many go in as long as you get the get the three points at this stage and now it's so look forward to the rest of our December coming up against ah two title contenders and the Derby game so ah
00:06:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah you i This game, if you were trying to convert someone into a into a football fan, it wasn't the game you'd show with them. I think what we're seeing a little bit is Palace collectively accepting that they can't be the entertaining swashbuckling side they were last season, because they just don't have, at least not yet, no one has that sort of telepathy, that understanding that Elise and Eze had together. So when we do try and be a bit more dynamic and flowing,
00:06:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
more often than not the moves just break down and leave them out of position whereas last season at the end they would have connected with each other, been really dangerous and and by virtue of that if not result in a goal, result in a corner, result and in something positive for Palace not just losing the pool in a position of vulnerability and you can see now that they are accepting necessary increase in in rigidity i think as a as a front three with there's a big exception that you can still float and link up but yeah the whole unit is not going to move as as as fluidly and i think that's probably a good thing for the time being with the personality understanding i actually found it with all the drama that's uh followed palace games this season ah i found this one kind of
00:07:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
reassuringly dull. I quite enjoyed it, relaxing, but I am a man who can sit through hours of darts and spend a lot of his afternoon listening to elbow, so I might not be the best judge of entertainment.

Player Highlight: Mateta's Impactful Performance

00:07:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, we'll take a quick pause there for an advert and continue our discussion of the game when we're back.
00:08:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so I ah cut you off on this earlier, Dan, because I wanted to discuss it in more depth in a separate section. John Fleetman said his goal. Talk to me about that.
00:08:30
Dan Tanner
Oh, well, it's ah it's a lot it's a great goal. Eze kind of gets it on the um the left wing, takes out, I think, two so of the Ipswich defenders, just with a little bit of ah a turn and a bit of skill, ah kind of lobs the ball forward a bit, and um Mateta is kind of running on to it. He's still on the left-hand side of the 18-yard box, and just kind of chips it over over the goalie across the goal, and it's just,
00:08:58
Dan Tanner
It's a very, very nice, sweet finish. Sort of very re reminiscent of some of the ones that Thierry Henri used to do back in the early 2000s. Just that deaf little touch. No real effort to it. And it just goes in the back of the net. when Then he celebrates like he's won the World Cup. And you hear this boom from the ah the Away um Palace fans as well. just You can just about hear it on the audio.
00:09:23
Dan Tanner
sorry
00:09:27
Dan Tanner
So...
00:09:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, i I loved everything about this, John Felipe, go and performance generally, as you say, in the goal, it was truly wonderful.
00:09:30
Dan Tanner
and
00:09:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Or as he put himself in his post-match interview, mandifi um his his combination of quick feet and strength, left grieves, stumbling over like ah like a horse that hasn't learned to use it legs yet, like a little mare.
00:09:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And in all game long, he just dominated those centre backs. He left a physical mark on O'Shea with a tussle there, which led to his head being opened up in the most gross way of centre head, opened up since Pulp Fiction. So that was, frankly, Amazon TV directors for sharing that one with us.
00:10:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and But the psychological scars on Griev's repair, he just completely dominated. He was herring around the pitch all game right until the end. he was He was sprinting around to put the pressure on in a game where many others looked weary.
00:10:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And his post-match press conference, or interview rather, on on pitch side was outstanding. It was a ah masterclass in saying all the things that you're um PR managers have told you you're not supposed to say from the press conference he said like uh what did he say one was uh this is a good time to play man city which i thought was hi ah hilarious another was um uh yes yes we we said this was a must win we think this is a must win game which again you're absolutely not supposed to say that that's why it's there
00:11:09
Dan Tanner
Not as far as to say that, now no, no, no, no. no
00:11:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
thats another was um yeah asked so about poor rundly when I'll still score goals, don't worry.
00:11:22
Dan Tanner
See, that kind of confidence, that that's what Palace fans love. that just Yeah, he doesn't mind, he doesn't care.
00:11:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I love him. ah
00:11:28
Dan Tanner
It's great.
00:11:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, on a serious note, it's really helpful, I'm sure, in the changing room to have a figure like that who just will not be perturbed about how bad the football is, about how bad the form is.
00:11:29
Dan Tanner
We love the entertainers. and
00:11:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
If he believes himself, he knows what he's doing. And I think that positivity can only stands to benefit Palace regardless of of Mattetta's form in any given week so yeah great to see great to see him back amongst the gold and and how what a finish. um Did anybody else stand out for you from Palace point of view in this one Dan?
00:12:04
Dan Tanner
um i don't well As A was ah pretty effective, they really couldn't handle his movement um at all. You can tell that it of was like a class apart, lot this international football against sort ah guys that have come through the championship or some being second or whatever string at one of the bigger clubs.
00:12:29
Dan Tanner
He just kind of walked through them a couple of times. Hendo, as I mentioned earlier, had an absolutely insane save, which he didn't have any right to actually say whatsoever. We just got incredibly lucky there. um And on the Ipswich side, Dilap was fairly sort of, he had his moments where he could have been sort of a little bit more deadly, as I think I pointed out yesterday as well.
00:12:58
Dan Tanner
um but just not as effective as he probably wanted to be because it was very much a sort of a stalemate. It was a grind out football game. So it was, um, it came down to literally the one goal and that's, yeah, there wasn't really that much. We were fairly comfortable with it and it just sort of, we got the three points. So other than that, I don't think there's much to say we did what we were supposed to do.
00:13:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think you're right, it wasn't it wasn't really a game of outstanding performances, but rather a sort of competence all around in there. Yeah, a team that was so in a good way playing within itself, understanding its limits and and taking confidence from that kind of control. um I think as I was good, as you highlight, you still feel that he's,
00:13:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
easing his way back in into his football, but um you could just see the quality using out of him every time he took a touch pretty much and um really helped out a few times when it's just repressing higher.
00:13:58
Dan Tanner
I'm standing in the center of the room.
00:14:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
He came really deep to put the ball up, which in a way is not where you want him, but it's a useful thing for him to be able to do. And um yeah, having him there to shimmy away from a few players and just progress it forward. Pallas was really pleasing. Yeah, I think a good performance for him. I think Gay,

Defensive Standout: Mark Gehry's Contribution

00:14:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
he also had a good game. We'll talk about him later for things that he perhaps is not undeserving of criticism for, but he
00:14:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
in this game, played really well on the pitch. His ah sweeping was really nice a few times that Ipswich looked to be getting behind, Boulton's channels for Dilap, and he came right across to the opposite side of the fence, made some really good tackles on his own side, wasn't dribbled past once, which I think is not that easy in a ah wide roll on that back three.
00:15:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And as ever, it was just very tidy, just very tidy on the ball. So another excellent performance from Mark Gehry, he really is a top quality player. i On the optimism meter, where should Palace fans be now after that game? different
00:15:29
Dan Tanner
it's still early days because we are still struggling to get results as the Newcastle one and even the Villa one prove that we can we are now starting to score so it's it's ah it's a step in the right direction but we still haven't got there yet we're still not sort of can be comfortable and again we can't go 2-0 up and just cruise out the result. it's We are fighting tooth and nail for every single shot and every single sort of a result now which is kind of what yeah it's what we basically walked ourselves into this season. I don't know why for whatever reason it's just this is this is the tan we've been dealt this season so until we start getting a couple more off on the bounce so
00:16:16
Dan Tanner
after Christmas because I don't think we're going to do much. Let's just say if it be it would be a Christmas miracle if we can get ah four points out of this three this um threeweek period, but I don't see that happening being the the realist. But if we can get some ah results together, like get a a sequence of wins that we should be doing, I think would be a lot more comfortable. The fans will feel a lot more comfortable as well. So it's you can start to begin to believe, I think is where you can say this. You can start because the last two, three performances have been a much, much better in much better performance all around. the teams The players are starting to realize the system and what's required of them, but it's still
00:17:08
Dan Tanner
It's keeping the momentum going and also trying to keep like major injuries to a minimum as well.
00:17:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And...
00:17:15
Dan Tanner
Because I think we've got, I think, I don't think there are any new ones, but we're still waiting on Wharton to come back.
00:17:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:17:22
Dan Tanner
Commoders suspended for another couple of games as well. And then ah one or two others, I think are still on the the injury list as well. So its it's a step in the right direction, but it's still early days.
00:17:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think you're right,

Cautious Optimism: Future Prospects

00:17:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's mean palette still very much in the Maya as you highlight, they still won this game, 1-0 scoring goals, it's still a bit of a problem and if scoring goals is a bit of a problem, winning games is a bit of a problem. um Nevertheless, it it does sort of cap off a around of a round of I think six games which isn't having that easy hasn't been complete pushover opposition in which Palace have managed to take nine points I think um so that is a big improvement been difficult to beat in that time and also got four points from ah two games away at potential relegation rivals the way the table looks at the moment in Ipswich and Wolves so I think there is plenty of
00:18:19
Dan Tanner
I think that's a very good thing.
00:18:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
positivity to be taken from that and Palace should bear that in mind when they're about to go on a run where they might get so no points at all from three or four games in the league. So I think it's like there is some some cause for optimism. There are still problems You don't see much to make your faint palate are going to suddenly now fly out the table and finish eighth or something like that.
00:18:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think, you know, it's yeah cautious optimism is it's reasonable at this stage on that resounding the positive note.
00:18:56
Dan Tanner
That's it. That's it.
00:19:00
Dan Tanner
That's
00:19:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's take a little break
00:19:04
Dan Tanner
great.

Controversy: Gehry's Religious Message

00:19:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah for a word from network and discuss the last bits for today's podcast.
00:19:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
So after the weeks of speculation about him moving to Newcastle as we approach deadline day, so I didn't think it was possible for Gay Heade to generate more bothersome headlines. ah But, much of the discussion around ah Tuesday's game centered around his writing I Heart Jesus on his rainbow laces, Captain's Arm Band against Newcastle, before writing Jesus Hearts You on it for the Ipswich game.
00:20:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's escaped punishment for violating the FA's rules about displaying religious symbols.
00:20:09
Dan Tanner
me
00:20:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
But how do you feel about this, Dan? Is it kind of not really the point, right?
00:20:19
Dan Tanner
It's not really the point but it's also this entire game one of the big things was the captain's armbands because the captain on the other side refused to wear the rainbow one for religious reasons so it's You are arguing two sides of the same coin. yeah It's just very weird. If Gehi decided, like, I'm assuming he's probably religious if he has to put, if he's putting that on, if he refused to do it on religious reasons, I don't think anybody would have had a problem and probably Palace would have backed his decision like Ipswich did with ah Mosey. So, but because he actually wrote it on, that seems to be the issue.
00:21:05
Dan Tanner
And he's basically gotten away ah at the moment with a bit of a ah slap on the wrist. So I don't know if he's going to do it again. We'll see.
00:21:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I don't know if there's a game in this in this period, fair because it's only ah it's a very short period where the rainbow laces are on.
00:21:15
Dan Tanner
It can.
00:21:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
and all this um
00:21:25
Dan Tanner
Yeah, it's a.
00:21:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
but the um i touchment so I'm not sure if there are any more games where he'll have the decision to make. and don't you mean I think would have gone much more unnoticed if he just didn't wear it, if her attention was drawn to him first and then Morsi inversely from it.
00:21:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
He won't be punished by the F.A. I think that rule is a is a bit silly anyway, that they've got about religious images and messages given the kind of quasimence anywhere.
00:21:56
Dan Tanner
Yeah, mine's more the fact that some of them they'll they'll accept and some of them and they won't. It's like, okay.
00:22:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, it's covered in in tattoos and crucifixes and they pray when they say it's, you know, I think it's a bit of a pushing water up a hill really if they're trying to ban a religious expression in football.
00:22:07
Dan Tanner
and stuff, yeah.
00:22:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I don't love it, though. I think if he'd done it, if he'd done it once, I could write off as a bit of a sort of thoughtless decision to use a lighter canvas to write an expression of his love and need on the armband. I think it's the without The fact he did it again makes me think he is sort of, does feel it's a caveat that he needs to sort of put on the arm of his support for rainbow laces.
00:22:43
Dan Tanner
They just...
00:22:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
And without an explanation from him, based on the scraps that he's given us and his dad's given us, it hits me, I think this is maybe generous reading of it.
00:22:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
It hits my kind of eyes and ears as sort of a statement of He's wearing the armbands because his Christianity teaches him that queer people deserve love and tolerance, but also he fundamentally thinks that his religious beliefs teach him that everything's wrong.
00:23:08
Dan Tanner
Yeah.
00:23:15
Dan Tanner
it's yeah it's the
00:23:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And i I think that's a bad message for pal palace people in the club.
00:23:18
Dan Tanner
yes i
00:23:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
possibly people in the dressing room might feel quite alienated by that and I'm i' a bit disappointed to see that from from the captain. It leaves a bit of a bitter taste on otherwise pleasing performance for me. if
00:23:37
Dan Tanner
but Hopefully he can learn a lesson from this and maybe sort of like either If the if the op the ah same situation comes up, do what any other one that has any kind of objections to it on religious basis, just refuse.
00:23:52
Dan Tanner
Go, I'm not doing it because of this. And then nine times out of 10, the club is going to support your decision.
00:23:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:58
Dan Tanner
So, um was or something.
00:23:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll kind of get sucked into making a statement about it and amplifying
00:24:03
Dan Tanner
Yeah, if you just just go right for whatever reason, this is why. And then leave it at that.
00:24:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think i think it's created. It's kind of inadvertently, which will not intentionally create a scene which has made it more of a thing that perhaps needed to be with Margay.
00:24:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But um I'm sure he's still got the support of those in the changing room and stuff. He seems like ah a nice boy, but I ah disagree a bit on this one.
00:24:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I feel like it was a misstep and not really the right message to be sending.
00:24:34
Dan Tanner
yeah
00:24:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But anyway, moving on from that. Something else that happened this week was the

FA Cup Draw: Facing Stockport

00:24:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
FA Cup third round drill. You may have seen the headlines that there's a big fixture between a team from London and one from the Manchester area.
00:24:52
Dan Tanner
Yeah. Yeah.
00:24:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah That's right, it's the Eagles will be travelling up to Stockport in January. What are your thoughts on this one then?
00:24:59
Dan Tanner
um I'm ecstatic for it. For once we don't get a Premier League team story up but that's straight out of the draw. ah We traditionally get somebody like this around us in the table for the first round of the FA Cup and we can't go anywhere.
00:25:15
Dan Tanner
Last time we had a a lower league team, I think we but that we had a really nice run that actually got us all the way to the finals, so it might be a good omen. But either way, it's just a nice one of not having to play Villa or Everton in the FA Cup when we're fighting them out in the the Premier League as well. So it was also kind of the, because I was watching it live, just happened to catch it, and we were just the last ones in the pot. So it was two balls as I was like, are we going to be home or are we going to be away?
00:25:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it does somewhat remove a jeopardy when you're the last teams in the Father's Day. I think it's a fun draw, Stockport. One of the things good is it's very close to me here in Manchester. So who knows, I might see if there's any way I can swing myself a ticket in the away end. I've been to Edgeley Park for a game before. It's always a good atmosphere.
00:26:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
They fly a Uruguayan flag, a match date, in reference to an old manager from Uruguay, which is a fun little quirk and might get a really good performance out of Munoz and Lerner, if we we put them on.
00:26:18
Dan Tanner
sir.
00:26:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
because they
00:26:28
Dan Tanner
We're just all very surprised if I don't get them all.
00:26:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
um
00:26:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
see And yeah, Stockport playing well. They're fifth in the table and in a pretty competitive division with big spenders like Rexman Birmingham. So I think they'll have a good go at it, and it will be a good FA Cup tie.
00:26:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that's what the Cup's all about. So yeah, bring it on. Nice one, Stockport.
00:26:50
Dan Tanner
And I don't think Palace have played them since we were in the ah old Division 1, so it's been a while. So this could be ah this could be a good one.
00:27:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Palace's time since then has been a bit rocky.
00:27:03
Dan Tanner
Yeah, they've got the opposite directions really, haven't
00:27:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well,
00:27:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
okay but I think that's a good place to to wrap it up for today. Thanks for joining me, Dan.
00:27:16
Dan Tanner
Yep, no worries, always it's a pleasure.
00:27:19
