Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, and welcome to the next installment of the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm your host today, Alex Waite, and I am joined by someone who I haven't seen for quite a while. It's Mr. Joe Lodge. How you doing, mate?
00:00:26
Joe
Yeah, very well, thanks mate. I'm pleased that our schedules have lined up. Nice to see you again after all this time. ah Yeah, have a good time. Have a good time drinking from a mug with my name on it, um which I think is indicative of deteriorating mental state as we get into the winter, but yeah, pretty good.
00:00:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nice, mate.

Crystal Palace: Past Games and Tactical Preview

00:00:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, like we were saying just before we came on air, I don't think Palace had won a game before when we last recorded. um Also on your mug as well, Christmas season's coming up. So, um you know, if you fancy a new one with your name on this, always a good time to put the feelers up.
00:01:04
Joe
Yeah, at least, yeah, at least, yeah, we're gonna get killed for the remittances now, for sure.
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Yeah, kick in the corner flag, I like it, that's good. um Right, so today we're going to jump into some tactical um thoughts about Oliver Glazner and the upcoming games that we've got over Christmas. ah We're going to look at the midfield options and some of the defence as well. It's actually um been quietly going about their business. And then with a big clash coming up this weekend against Brighton, we're going to have a look back at some ah players to cross the rivalry lines in the Premier League of Old. There are many and some good, funny, interested ones that we're going to jump into later in the pod.
00:01:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah So we're going to get started with the Palace midfield.

Oliver Glazner's Selection Dilemma

00:01:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Joe and Dan on yesterday's pod obviously discussed ah Will Hughes, who was a man of the match against Man City on Saturday, deservedly so, putting an excellent performance um in that two-all draw. um But it does beg the question now, especially with Adam Wharton, with Adam Wharton's return on the horizon, um who are the midfield two for Glazner now? Hughes has hardly put a foot wrong this season.
00:02:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
especially recently. And then you've got Lerma and the core who are back. And then, yeah, water on could be back as well for for Sunday. ah So, Joe, Glasner here has a bit of a selection dilemma. Who does he go with moving forward?
00:02:31
Joe
i I think most likely he goes with shoes and water in the immediate future slash when water is back to back to his absolute best um or fittest rather. I think You can see a temptation to leave Waughton out after the performance that Hughes put in and the way that him and Lermo have played together in recent weeks. They're both very solid.
00:03:06
Joe
really tenacious midfielders. They've got more bite between the pair of them than Hannibal Lecter at the dentist. I think they're really, really good combination in that sense and of how sure the team up. But actually, sort of a bit paradoxically, I think Hughes plays uncharacteristically well in terms of his progressive passing, spotting the balls forward, breaking the lines against City.
00:03:34
Joe
and It was amazing that game, but yeah it'd be a bit too early to say, oh, suddenly he's added that to his game. I think maybe

Midfield Impact: Hughes vs. Wharton

00:03:42
Joe
it was more ah a of a one-off. You might prove me wrong. Actually, that highlights how valuable a player like Alan Wharton is to Palace and will be, particularly, I think, even more so now than he was at the back end of last season because when Palace are playing in a way where they're sat quite deep and they're looking to hit teams quickly and directly on the counter. I think having someone who can spot those gaps, punch it between the lines, um yeah get the ball into the final third really, really quickly is so valuable and
00:04:28
Joe
almost sensual tactically really for that attacking system to work. Hughes did it against City and Walton, I think, if you were to try and try and pick out one thing that's exceptional about his game, it is his ability to do that, to punch it between the lines, to pick his head up, to progressable quickly. So I think it's with this kind of Glassner's Palace 2.0, if that is what we're seeing, a bit more counter-sacking, a bit more reactive.
00:05:01
Joe
Wharton could take it to another level if he can recapture the form of last season. And then I think Hughes and Lerner, he could kind of go one or the other. Hughes has been a bit more, he's been fitter for longer, more consistent and has a good relationship established from the end of last season with Wharton. They played well together. So I think that's his first choice once Wharton's really back up and running.
00:05:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, I think you're right, like, watered is, I think when he's back to fitness, he is the man ah to carry that midfield game, like especially in the attacking sense. um But what about Dukore? Where do you think he

D'Corre's Role and Pairing Possibilities

00:05:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
fits in? Because obviously, I would say on paper, when you look at our midfield ah the central midfield options,
00:05:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
You'd probably say decorate and water in terms of quality and potential um when they're at their best would be the starting pair. But decorate is like, since he's come back, been a bit iffy. He's had a long-term injury, so we'll give him the benefit of the doubt. But against Ipswich, there were some rash tackles. He arguably could have been sent off for a double yellow. He got hooked at half time because he was on a yellow. It looked like he was going to get a second one.
00:06:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, so where do you think his kind of future lies in that midfield conundrum?
00:06:22
Joe
Yeah, I mean I wouldn't be surprised if come the end of the season the midfield pair is De Corre and Walton, and I think that's the one that makes the most sense if De Corre manages to maintain his fitness. As you say, he is he's maybe the most talented kind of complete midfielder of the four, really. Walton's obviously got some super strengths in terms of his passing. But Dikore has a level of tidiness that isn't matched by Lermer or Hughes. He's physically more imposing, cover more ground. And his younger, he's 24, I think, Palace will be really eager to get the best out of him um because, I mean, heaven him and Wharton could be a really exciting partnership going forward. But for the time being, I think,
00:07:15
Joe
Probably Glastner won't want to sort of put two midfielders in there that he's not quite sure of the sharpness and fitness of. And as you say, Decora's performances, particularly against Ipswich, have made us question that. And if he's going to throw one back in the deep end, I think based on what they can bring compared to the person I have already and for how the team is playing. Wharton's probably the one that stands to have
00:07:50
Joe
a more transformative effect on Palace land, D'Corre. So I reckon we'll probably see Wharton come back in quite quickly and then an attempt made to ease D'Corre back in. and And I hope that attempt is made because I think D'Corre is a it a really quality player. He's just, yeah, I don't see him going with a pair of them off the bat really.
00:08:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, I agree. um It's going to take a while to to bed. Well, the core and water and who have hardly played together. I'm not sure if they even have as a pair yet, but it will take time. um And yeah, it's it's exciting, though, because, you know, we're getting all these players back and the options are really exciting, especially with Brighton Arsenal and other Arsenal.
00:08:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then the Christmas fixtures coming up, were we're going to need everyone back to

fitness and there'll be some rotation, I'm sure, over the Christmas period. so I'm sure we'll get to see all these combinations come to fruition. um Right, stick with us ah after this quick ad break and we'll be talking about the defence after this. Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to part two of the Daily Palace podcast. I'm Alex Way and I'm joined by Joe Lodge today.

Crystal Palace's Defensive Strengths

00:09:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So we're just talking about the midfield there and we're going to edge back into the ah into the defensive realms for part two.
00:09:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So interestingly just you know looking at the Premier League tables I do on a daily basis.
00:09:44
Joe
but
00:09:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I noticed the Palace had the second best defensive record in the bottom half of the table. um Funnily enough, only beaten by Spurs, who are now 11th.
00:09:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
They've only conceded 19, which I actually think...
00:10:00
Joe
yeah i'm amazed they have a better record than pal to be honest spurs
00:10:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's bizarre. like i'm not I'm not surprised they're 11th. That doesn't shock me. But the fact they conceded 19 goals, I was like, oh, my God. I thought they'd conceded well over 20.
00:10:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But yeah, another feat for us that I came across this week was that we've not conceded two or more goals in any game this season in all competitions, which is good going considering for some teams, the guys have been flying in like wolves have obviously got the worst defensive record.
00:10:26
Joe
Yeah, I'm amazed they have a better record than Palace, to be honest.
00:10:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then um even some of the bigger teams like Man City are shipping goals left, right and center. um So a lot of that has actually come we think from the kind of settled back five that Glazner has gone with. um How important, Joe, do you think that back five, you know, the central three and then the two wing backs, how important do you think that foundation will be as we try and climb up the table?
00:10:59
Joe
Yeah, I mean, i think I think massive. There are

Back Five Formation Analysis

00:11:02
Joe
a couple of caveats or other factors ah to bear in mind in that I think part of Palace is really good compared to where they are on the table. Defensive records is reflected with Dean Henderson having an awesome season, to be fair. he's He's been saving some shots that he really shouldn't have. ah And also in recent weeks, there's been a big uptick.
00:11:27
Joe
um limited Newcastle to one shot. City 20 a few good chances and kept a clean sheet against Ipswich that was really impressive. Definitely coincides with a move to a more conservative style from Guston. So I think some of it is is the midfield also being pushed back and encouraged to take less risks in pressing and this and the other. But yeah, I think the back five is is really important. On paper, I think we were saying from the start, the choir, Gehi and Chalabar have a really nice mix of talents between them. They've got size, speed, agility, composure, aggression. They've got the makings of a really nice back three and probably all they needed was a bit of time to develop that
00:12:28
Joe
unspoken understanding of where they're going to be, when they're going to push up, how to limit the gaps between them, what each other's habits are. And I think that's developing. And yeah, we're seeing we're saying la the fruits of that. I do think we won't necessarily see, or don't necessarily want to see the same back five absolutely every game.
00:12:54
Joe
I think the Quarren gay here probably are probably shillings for every start their fit. Chalabert, the club probably have least interest in developing as he's only alone and he's probably been the weakest of the three this season I think. Not that he's not been good but he's looked a bit error prone, sometimes a bit uncomfortable on the ball which surprised me given the rollies to play for two calls Chelsea. But I could see him getting rotated a little bit um
00:13:30
Joe
just to get Richards and Riaz some minutes and make but room for them as the season progresses. And I really want to see Palace sign some people who can give Munoz and Mitchell a bit of support because both of them, Munoz only after busy summer now looks like the player that we know he can be again.
00:13:50
Joe
and um And yeah, Mitchell is always great for the first, like, 70 minutes of the game. and hes is And he's a passenger really after that, isn't he? I think, bless him, he looks knackered by the end of everyone.
00:13:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah yeah i think it's
00:14:01
Joe
So yeah, I think those two need a bit of help. But yeah, basically, I think consistently just consistently playing together is part of what's improved Palace, definitely.
00:14:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's sort of been the building blocks of of our good run recently, of being hard to beat.
00:14:15
Joe
one
00:14:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
That usually comes from a solid defensive line and we're starting to see that now. Like we always knew Gehie was a top player. um But there's been some mistakes and I think Glasner has reacted to that really well and I think he deserves credit for sticking with those guys.
00:14:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
He could have brought in old reliable Joel Ward at some point, if he wanted to, but he didn't.
00:14:37
Joe
which is
00:14:40
Joe
but the back for we We were kind of advocating the back four at a time.
00:14:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we were. and And he obviously trialled that in that friendly against Sips, which in the international couple of international breaks ago. i'm But yeah, he stuck with it and fair play to him. But yeah, I totally agree with you with the wing backs.
00:14:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, Jeffrey Schlapp could

Chadi Riyadh's Return and Defensive Impact

00:15:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
fill in at left wing back, but he is very much a stopgap. He's not a natural. um And if we are, you know, obviously we're going to stick with Glazner barring a disaster. um So we need to sign players in those positions who are naturals like Munoz. Mitchell isn't by trade, but he has learned that position and developed really well. um But I do think, yeah, we do need more depth, flight,
00:15:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, similar to similar to the midfield, like we've got a big run of games coming up. and I mean, I could see Munoz playing every game. He's got that much energy, but um he does deserve a break. Well, in the last couple of games, carried us through, um which is great to see. um there Are there any other Well, we've obviously got Chadi Riyadh coming back from injury as well. Do you think you're saying about Chalaba, you know, perhaps us having the least interest in developing? Do you think over time Riyadh will maybe slot in for Chalaba?
00:16:03
Joe
I think it would require maybe a bit of re-jigging, but yeah. um I guess the only issue with Riyadh is that he... We kind of feel he was probably signed sort of a review to future planning after gay he goes. he's I think he's naturally left silent, isn't he? That's the position that he would be playing. So if he went in,
00:16:31
Joe
four chalibi I could see it, but it would probably be like something like the crayon moving to the right, or gate he moving to the right, or just playing him slightly out of position, which he might do. ah But yeah, i I've been to the CX, we didn't really, we didn't get to see much of Riyadh before he got injured, and I think he's probably a pretty quality player. He looked really composed and intelligent in,
00:16:58
Joe
in the pre-season games that we saw him in and has that, which we know ah is not every player from La Masia, from Barcelona, has that kind of intelligence and composure about them, as um yeah Adam Atreu has always been trying to disprove throughou his career. But Chadi Riyadh does seem to have that kind of game intelligence and maturity and stuff from just his time at Betis and the little bit we've seen of him.
00:17:28
Joe
So he is a player I think should be big for Palace in the future as long as this doesn't spiral into a career long injury crisis and yeah, well we'll see, but yeah, I wouldn't be surprised to see someone like Chella been missing a few games to accommodate him as the season goes on.
00:17:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think just like with every position, there'll be some rotation. Like we can't stick with the same 11 every game. As much as like every team would love to do that, it's not possible. But um' yeah, it's exciting because again, it's another young player who's coming back who we've got high hopes for and hopefully we'll see more of. And yeah, it'd be great to see more of Chris Richards as well because he's sort of been quite reliable.
00:18:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But if we're winning and picking up points and drawing, like it's hard to change, the especially the back three. So you kind of understand Glazner on that. ah Right, we're going to take a final break and then return for some behind enemy lines chat from the Premier League years gone by. Crossing Rivalry Lines: Player Moves

00:19:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Way and I'm joined by Joe Lodge today and we're going to conclude this podcast ah looking looking at some rivalries, so player some players who have crossed into rivalry lines in the Premier League. um This is in honor of the upcoming game against Brighton on Sunday,

Michael Owen's Career and Liverpool Disconnect

00:19:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
which we'll talk more about in in the upcoming episodes of the Daily Palace podcast over the next few days.
00:19:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm sure we'll touch on it a little bit and give you some kind of preview to the game. um So Joe, I want to ask you, who who have you picked for your... um Yeah, you called it Judas Corner before we came so we came on the pod.
00:19:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
who Who is your kind of Premier League Judas figure that's into an enemy team?
00:19:48
Joe
Yeah, um I'm non-baptized, a good person to throw to, to this corner. But um i what one person in in general Premier League terms, um and I've got a couple more which I'll wait for you to give yours.
00:20:02
Joe
I've got a couple I want to ask your opinion about a so as a genuine Crystal Palace fan.
00:20:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, okay.
00:20:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay.
00:20:09
Joe
But um The one I find quite funny is Michael Owen, with the way it's worked out all around as Eli. So obviously he was Liverpool legends, left them to join Real Madrid, then went back to Newcastle instead after leaving Real Madrid, became a free agent after Newcastle got relegated and ended up at United. ah The reasons I find him funny are
00:20:41
Joe
Oh, there's many reasons if I find Michael Owen funny, the reasons I find this funny. ah the um he He found himself choosing between Everton and Man United apparently for that that free transfer, which is like choosing between keying the car or stealing the tires of someone you broke up with yourself.
00:21:02
Joe
um I also think it's kind of funny that he doesn't seem to understand why he's not loved at Liverpool. He was kind of really sad when he had these amazing years there. and so Obviously was an amazing player at Liverpool, but also he didn't.
00:21:17
Joe
most of his greatest achievements there were really personal achievements, I guess it was like uh golden boots, ballon doors, what have you, the ballon door being the standard one and it seems like he's kind of going but I don't know why Liverpool fans don't love me I want them the ballon door it's like i no you want yourself that mate it's not uh so yeah I mean I'm not saying he should have done more to make Liverpool win some major there but uh I just think it is kind of The way that he doesn't really seem to fathom why he's not popular at Anfield makes me laugh.
00:21:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:21:54
Joe
So yeah, Michael Owen.
00:21:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, there's there's lots of things about Mike worrying that they just leave you with like this quandary of like, what who is he? like Was he a footballer?
00:22:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
because this this and Yeah, like i literally, these things come up.
00:22:05
Joe
it
00:22:05
Joe
It's to watch films. i should
00:22:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
like He doesn't doesn't drink tea, apparently. like He's never watched a film in his life. and it's like But he seems to like think that that's normal and everyone else shouldn't watch films like the way he describes it.
00:22:19
Joe
yes
00:22:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's like I just, the guy is bizarre, man.
00:22:25
Joe
Yeah, I remember from yeah yeah when he was explaining that using the hashtag hate films.
00:22:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:32
Joe
No, no, no, no.
00:22:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, that's never gonna, gonna pick up, is it? Like, and yeah.
00:22:36
Joe
No one else shares that opinion.
00:22:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the other one was that, I can't, who was the goalkeeper he did that, like, that video with where he's smashing shots for us at 11.
00:22:46
Joe
Yes, yeah. It never sound for all that, I think.
00:22:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. And so for us to say to him, it's like he's only 13. And it's just like the guy, if he wasn't good at football, uh, he'd probably be a conspiracy theorist.
00:22:59
Joe
Yeah.
00:23:02
Joe
it It was an open that, wasn't it?
00:23:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh,
00:23:03
Joe
it was yeah He was at the Britannia, which was where it all sadly ended for him failing to score past 25-year-old goalkeepers.
00:23:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh yeah.
00:23:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, he's no longer the bully anymore.
00:23:14
Joe
Yeah.
00:23:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's the bully.

Gary Neville vs. Schmeichel: An Iconic Moment

00:23:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he's it an interesting character. We could probably do a whole pod on him, but it's not probably not worth it. It's not worth giving him the time of day anymore.
00:23:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, mine is actually, speaking of Man United, I haven't gone for the obvious one here, but it's it's Peter Schmeichel joining Man City.
00:23:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Which again, like if you could kind of understand it like city weren't great then and Schmeichel was at the end of his career after an illustrious time, old Trafford. But the reason I chose it is just because it jumped to my mind where he goes to shake Gary Neville's hand before the Manchester Derby.
00:23:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Pat's Neville on the shoulder and he's like, oh, you're all right, mate? Sticks the hand out. Neville realizes who he is. He's like, oh, no. Jog on. i was like Just go out, mate. Leave me alone. And I was like, oh, that's quality. I love it.
00:24:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah don't I don't like much about Gary Neville. But I rate him.
00:24:11
Joe
Yes, it's I always find that sort of surprising. I kind of, because of Gary Neville the pundit, you forget that Gary Neville the player was actually like, ah maybe not hard, but quite aggressive and kind of forceful, wasn't he?
00:24:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Passionate, yeah.
00:24:25
Joe
Yeah.
00:24:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, very passionate about Man United. um And yes, yeah.
00:24:29
Joe
He still does that.
00:24:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's like, if you're gonna mug someone off, I don't think I'd mug off Peter Schmeichel. Like, I'll just do the handshake and be like, all right, fair enough, mate.
00:24:36
Joe
and
00:24:39
Joe
Yeah, it's like you're a kid, God.
00:24:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Yeah, like the size of his hands, he'd just sort of brush, brush Gary Neville aside and just knock him over.
00:24:47
Joe
it's just just
00:24:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, um the um obviously the other one that is massive as a Palace fan is the Glen Murray ah Palace and Brighton link. um There's obviously the infamous swing for Palace

Glenn Murray's Legacy at Crystal Palace

00:25:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
fans. I can't repeat what the Brighton fan said when Murray scored against them, but it's sort of iconic amongst Palace fans. But yeah, that is that's a close second for me. Have you got any others that spring to mind, Joe?
00:25:15
Joe
Gilem Mary was one I was going to ask about because I wasn't quite sure what the perception of him was, whether it was kind of that he was ah was a Judas from Pilate's point of view or if it was that he kind of maybe not had the chance he deserved for Palace in the permanent, having fired them up from the championship and kind of...
00:25:37
Joe
and I always thought it was a funny figure, Glen Murray, purely because I had a history teacher. He was a Palace fan from Oldham, bizarrely.
00:25:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah, interesting link.
00:25:48
Joe
He taught me when I was... Yeah, when I was in year eight, he told me I should stop idolising Van Persie and watch Glen Murray in the championship if I want to see a proper striker.
