Technical Issues Resolved

00:00:01
Finn
Cool. I think we had some slight technical problems there. so I've asked this before, but I'll jump back in. but Magic time machine. and um yeah so I have a question for

Is Eddie Howe the Right Manager?

00:00:12
Finn
you. so is Do you feel that Eddie Howe is the the person to take this team forward? Do you feel like this this is his team? Or do you feel maybe it could potentially flourish under under a different manager. what What are your thoughts? Are you sort of for how or do you think maybe it could be a personal change with Benefit Newcastle? What are your thoughts?

Eddie Howe's Impact and Future

00:00:39
Iain Mackay the Noo
I am very much for Eddie Howe. I think time will prove that Eddie Howe is the first English elite manager for decades. Eddie Howe has this ability to improve every player that he's working with. It's not just Eddie Howe, it's Jason Tindler, it's the rest of the coaching gang, but every single player that he inherited, and that was in ah so in a Championship squad that was struggling to win a point in the Premier League. More than half of the team is still those players. So the way he has brought Joe Linton on, the way Almoron and Murphy have completely overachieved from what we ever thought they could possibly do. um Up until Monday night, Fabian Shah looked like a world-class centre-half and he couldn't even get it into Steve Bruce's team.
00:01:36
Iain Mackay the Noo
so Eddie's got something about him which improves players. They bought really well, and these were Amanda Stavely and Eddie Howe's choices to bring Bruno and Isaac, Botman and Gordon in. They've improved since they've come in. So Eddie is the one for me that we stick with. However, I will say what I'm what I think is uncertain. It was a It was such a cohesive project when Amanda Staveley was the front woman of it. And they got on so well with ah her and her husband got on so well with Eddie Howe. That was the team. And when they've left, I don't know if Eddie feels like he's lost a major supporter and he's now working with people who he's got to work with rather than people who he would choose to work with. I'm not sure. But certainly this season, there doesn't seem to be that, um,
00:02:36
Iain Mackay the Noo
single focus of of you know of taking us to the very top, which there was. And it was like a relentless bandwagon rolling towards that. And now there's all sorts of things that seem to be interfering and and tipping up with it. So without her there, I don't know if Eddie has got the free pass that he would have had. um ah Certainly, if he keeps producing teams and that produce results like losing at home to Brighton and to West Ham no disrespect to those sides but we're a strong team we would be winning those games at home even under Steve Bruce then you know it's a results game isn't it and they may think that the guys might think it's time for a change I hope not because Eddie Howe will prove what a good manager he is over time and I'm just hoping he does it with Newcastle
00:03:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think you make a really good point there, Ian, about it's easy to assume from a distance there because the turnaround was so quick when he first came in. Newcastle just immediately bought a really great squad, a bit like City kind of did when the money came in there or Chelsea before that. Actually, ah it was a lot of the same players that Steve Bruce had had before ah and Eddie Howe suddenly got playing.
00:03:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
like Champions League players and they're still integral parts of the team now, so I think he does deserve massive credit for that. ah Once again, we hope they're not playing like Champions League players on Saturday.
00:04:10
Iain Mackay the Noo
Don't worry. They didn't play like National League players on bloody Monday, I tell you.

Players to Watch: Newcastle vs. Palace

00:04:15
Iain Mackay the Noo
um
00:04:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, I think there we'll take a little pause and have a word from our provider.
00:04:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Finn, which Newcastle players have you been worrying about? Who's been keeping you up at night this week with a cold sweats and terror approaching Saturday?
00:04:55
Iain Mackay the Noo
Okay.
00:04:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And are there any Palace players that you think could stand to particularly hurt Newcastle this weekend?
00:05:05
Finn
I mean, can I name the entire Newcastle squad, even but even the the players who aren't on the list? No, I think Ian listed the ones that I've ah already sort of thought about. I mean, I'm a big fan of Alexander Isaac. I think he's, I remember when he was playing in the Basque region for Sociedad and like, he's a really technically gifted player. And he's like, in a time where number nines are quite rare or good number nines, I should say.
00:05:34
Finn
And it's like, I think Newcastle really have a gem in him. I feel like he's he wrote he's he's a really good striker. He does have that tendency. I think, again, Ian pointed out that he does sometimes have that tendency to take one or too many touches, or to try to hang on to the ball for a bit longer than he should have, instead of releasing one of his other teammates. But um he's definitely someone I feel is going to be pivotal in the game. Also, Bruno Guimaris, like,
00:06:04
Finn
really, really top level midfielder. And I feel it's going to be an interesting battle between him and ah players like Decora and the Devilny and um in the Palace team. um In terms of Palace and who's going to be important, well, I think both teams, as we've we've sort of alluded to earlier, have had real issues with converting chances and scoring goals this season, particularly Crystal Palace. And I really feel like it's John Philip Mateta needs a really good game because yeah we have nobody else.
00:06:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:06:37
Finn
um And I think he's really going to have his work cut out to sort of try and bully um those Newcastle defenders who are not easily physically intimidated and are quite strong themselves.
00:06:52
Finn
I feel like Even though it's been a pretty terrible season for Crystal Palace, I was even just discussing this with a Tottenham fan at work today. One of the good things is, even when you have a terrible season, usually that's when you have things like yeah youngsters coming through. And I think Deveney's breakthrough into the squad has been a real sort of like ray of sunlight in what's been quite a gloomy gloomy few months for for Palace. I really think he'll probably be quite pivotal in the game.
00:07:23
Finn
And hopefully, I mean, he's he's shown, when like when I saw him playing against Philim, he showed his defensive and passing capabilities. And then ah in the previous picture against Aston Villa, he showed that he's really good in terms of attacking as well. So he's almost showcasing his box-to-box abilities. um I hope he just we just don't ruin him and send him to the injury table too quickly, which seems to be happening with all of our players at the moment.
00:07:51
Finn
um Yeah, and then in terms of like other players, I think it's nice to see Ismaila Sa get off the mark finally. um Again, another player who's had real issues with converting ah chances. What could be interesting, though, is if Eberichieze is fit and able to start, will that mean Sa has to then be benched? It remains to be seen.
00:08:16
Finn
um Yeah, i just I also just want to go back quickly to when I was asking Ian about um Eddie Howe. Again, I think it's a sign of a really good manager.

Managerial Challenges and Development

00:08:25
Finn
Any good manager actually is a is a manager who improves players.
00:08:28
Finn
And I think it's so true in terms of that Newcastle squad is that so many of those players would probably, under a different manager, probably wouldn't be in the first team and probably wouldn't have um progressed or developed in the way that they have.
00:08:29
Iain Mackay the Noo
Thank you.
00:08:43
Finn
And I think it is actually I have to really tip my cap to Eddie Howe and the fact that he's taken players like Joe Linton, who was, I know this has been repeated so many times, but was signed as a big tool target man, and it's been transformed into like a really pivotal midfielder who sort of connects play and is like really an integral, actually, to that Newcastle team. um And yeah, he's done done really well, actually, I think, with with that Newcastle squad. It's just the problem is, as with all even our manager, with ah is like how long can you go on with port with with um negative results? Unfortunately, even if fans love you, even if you seem to be doing the right thing,
00:09:25
Finn
And the only reason I'm saying this out loud is also I'm echoing these thoughts about Oliver Glazner at the moment. I love Oliver Glazner, but I just feel there's this horrible lingering feeling that um Crystal Palace might panic and press the eject button come January if nothing's improved.
00:09:42
Finn
But um yeah, go ahead, Ian.
00:09:44
Iain Mackay the Noo
you I'm going to ask if you guys have any clue as to what happened. I know you sold, at least I But apart from that, why are Palace not burning it up like they did in the last 10-12 games last season?
00:10:02
Iain Mackay the Noo
It must have been top of the form league at the end of last season. You certainly spanked us when we came to Sellers Park in April. 3-0 and we were looking to get 0.
00:10:12
Finn
I mean, the East.
00:10:12
Iain Mackay the Noo
Mateta dominated things that afternoon, by the way, or that evening.
00:10:17
Finn
Yeah, absolutely. I think it's a combination of things. I think it's not it's not one clear reason. I think it's a combination of things such as there's been a lot of tinkering of the defense. and So we had quite a solid defensive defensive line and system. And then because of Palace's decision, which I don't agree with, to sell Joachim Anderson, who I thought was a really integral part of that defensive system and someone who was able to actually also and um contribute really good diagonal or long balls and was very assured and had a really good partnership with Mark Gahey.
00:10:52
Finn
um That is a big factor, the changing the defence. You just said it there, Jean-Philippe Mateta had this purple run of form where he was just unstoppable and a lot it's great when strikers do that but then the problem is when that dries up um and I think obviously his exploits for Palace last season and then with the French Olympic team.
00:11:14
Finn
over the summer just sort of seemed to drain him a bit. And when he came back, he's just been unable to sort of reciprocate or um repeat that that um that run of form. And then, yeah, just I think Michael Lise, we were so lucky to have Michael Lise.
00:11:30
Finn
um and just missing that that's that that little edge of quality um to finish things off and to sort of be calm on the ball and just i mean just the fact that marca lisa is doing so well at buying munich at the moment is it stands to that and i just think yeah it's just a culmination of a few things and i'm still confident oliver glasner's the guy who's going to get the best out of the team i just don't know specifically if it's his team yet. A bit like how you said that Eddie

Oliver Glazner's Squad Building

00:12:02
Finn
Howe, that Newcastle team is Eddie Howe's. He's basically decided who he wants in that squad. I'm not 100% sure that's the case with Oliver Glazner. I think some of those players are ones that he's picked out. Others I feel have been, he's been sort of handed and he's they've said, right, use this in your system. And maybe they haven't acclimatized to it yet.
00:12:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, well I think that I'd agree. Echo Finn's thoughts on that entirely. ah He's very good. Gaston is reassuring at picking out the exact things that are wrong and just saying I'm in a press conference which does fill you with hope that he's got a solution. It's two big things it's bang on at the moment and about ah the space between the lines being too big which we've spoken about a few times in the podcast and the lack of pace in their build-up play.
00:12:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So I think we'll see that manifested in a way at this weekend with Palace sitting deep and moving the ball at the pitch as quickly as possible. ah But yeah, we'll just skip right through.
00:13:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was going to ask about ah Mark Gahey, but it'll hurt me too much to hear the vision of him in a Newcastle shirt ball to life.
00:13:15
Finn
oh
00:13:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
so's So let's just skip straight through to Lee ah predictions. Starting with you Ian, how do you think it's going to go?

Predictions for Newcastle vs. Palace

00:13:25
Iain Mackay the Noo
Well, my initial thought given that whether to two of the lowest three lowest scoring teams in there in Premier League. Jokingly, I suggested that we would be nil nil. It would be horrible game.
00:13:41
Iain Mackay the Noo
match of the day would say that we played, but they couldn't find a highlight to show. It could be a game like that if if our confidence is as shot as it seemed to be on at the end of the West Ham game. However, I think Eddie will pick the same team. He'll bring down Burnback who was suspended.
00:14:00
Iain Mackay the Noo
um and I don't think it would get everybody who was so poor a chance to redeem themselves, and I think they will. So I'm going to go, as I do, with every Newcastle away game that we win 3-1.
00:14:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent, excellent.
00:14:14
Iain Mackay the Noo
But I said that last law i said that last ah less April and we got absolutely caned in, we got hammered.
00:14:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's reassuring. Yeah. ham is that like Well, i've I've actually gone non-ironically with your joking prediction, Ian.
00:14:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it will be nil though. I think it'll be a really dull game. And both teams will miss massive chances and fundamentally it'll peter out.
00:14:31
Iain Mackay the Noo
Do you?
00:14:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And as you say, last on the running order on match of the day, what do you think, Finn? A slightly different take?
00:14:42
Finn
My take is the the Palace defence is still oh leaky and and unsure, so I'm pretty certain no matter what happens, Newcastle will it get we'll get on the score sheet, will get at least a goal. I'm going to go Oh, this sounds really negative.
00:15:02
Finn
I think Newcastle are probably going to win, too, now, I think.
00:15:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hm.
00:15:07
Finn
And some people are going, you're a Palace fan. How can you say that? I was like, yeah, well, I've also got eyes in my head, and I've seen us play.
00:15:13
Iain Mackay the Noo
Okay.
00:15:14
Finn
And I know in terms of the quality. And also, I mean, we have a lot of injured players, and I feel like that's that's something to point out.
00:15:24
Finn
and like I think a lot of those players are doing the best that they can in roles that they wouldn't usually be filling. um But yeah, I think, I don't know, I'm just really, I'm just really negative at the moment. I just think I think Newcastle will probably get in the way when and get back on track.
00:15:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent.
00:15:43
Iain Mackay the Noo
I do think you were right, you were right, Josh, if Eze is fit and starts.
00:15:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well.
00:15:48
Iain Mackay the Noo
That increases the palace chances of of of having a cutting edge. Another player which you've not mentioned, and Joe said she thought he was injured, but I think I'm a real fan of Adam Wharton.
00:16:02
Iain Mackay the Noo
I mean, I think he boss he bossed last April as well, is he?
00:16:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, he's out for a couple of weeks, but he is, he's quality.
00:16:07
Finn
Francesca.
00:16:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. So he's had he' had groin surgery. He basically was not the same player after Euros when he came back. And it was because Ollie has been blamed for the fact that he was nursing this groin problem.
00:16:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah, he's out for a couple of weeks while he recovers from that.
00:16:20
Iain Mackay the Noo
Right.
00:16:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the sooner he can come back, the better. I think as Finn says, Palace out at the moment, just sort of scraping by really trying not to pick up any more injuries until they can have more of a proper crack with the likes of as they back up to full fitness.
00:16:31
Iain Mackay the Noo
Yeah.
00:16:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
as they might play this game but I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't think Glastner really doesn't want to risk him because he's so integral that if he's not 100% I think he'll hold off. Anyway let's have a little pause there um and then we'll go really rapidly through some quiz questions at the end and ah wrap up wrap up the podcast.
00:17:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Okay, so I've put together a few questions for a segment that I'm calling Game Show that Hammy Obi. We've got a few questions about players who've paid for it.
00:17:35
Iain Mackay the Noo
Ha ha. Excellent.
00:17:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fins head in his hand is used to every week.
00:17:41
Finn
I don't know if I use that word.
00:17:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
minutenight ah Basically, we've got players, four questions about players who've played for both Palace and Newcastle. I'll ask you two each.
00:17:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's multiple choice. If your opponent gets it wrong, you will have a chance to steal.
00:18:00
Iain Mackay the Noo
OK.
00:18:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
The questions lean to one side of the other. So I'm not going to give you a free reign of them. I'm going to ask Finn first. Darren Ambrose. played nearly 200 times for Newcastle and Palace in his career. His time at the latter is perhaps best remembered for a League Cup screamer away at Fergies United. ah What I want you to tell me, Finn, is who described it as the best goal they'd seen from an away side at Old Trafford? Was it A, Ravel Morrison, B, Sir Alex Ferguson, C, Gary Neville, or D, Darren Ambrose himself?
00:18:41
Finn
Ooh, you cheeky git. Put that in at the end.
00:18:47
Finn
I want to say, I mean, I don't think it was Ravel Morrison. I don't think Ravel Morrison cares that much.
00:18:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
the
00:18:58
Finn
Who are the other options? Can you read the options again to me? It was B.
00:19:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
B, Sir Alex, C, Gary Neville.
00:19:03
Finn
I think it's Gary. I'm going to say Gary Neville, but you're going to tell me
00:19:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Final answer, Gary Neville.
00:19:10
Finn
It's Barry Neville, but you're going to tell me it's someone else.
00:19:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was Gary Neville, one point on the board. Some palace would take on Saturday, for sure. ah Ian, for you, Show The Ramiobi featured a combined 352 times for Newcastle and Palace.
00:19:20
Iain Mackay the Noo
Yes.
00:19:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Admit the only four of them were for Palace, but that makes him a stalwart. What I want you to tell me is, who was he playing for when Newcastle scouted him?
00:19:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Was it a Walker Central Boys Club? B, Newcastle Blue Star. C, Walled End Boys Club. Or D, Athletic
00:19:52
Iain Mackay the Noo
and They all come from Walls End of Boys Club, but I think Shola was playing for Walker.
00:20:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is that your final answer, Walker?
00:20:02
Iain Mackay the Noo
Yep.
00:20:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Walker's correct. One apiece, one apiece.
00:20:07
Iain Mackay the Noo
Shola is still involved, you know, in Newcastle.
00:20:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's head of like lightens or something, isn't he? Like some weird role.
00:20:16
Iain Mackay the Noo
Might be Steve Harper, who is the, I can't remember now, but yeah, he's involved in,
00:20:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, good man.
00:20:21
Iain Mackay the Noo
He's involved on a daily basis show. ah Yeah, Kev. Kev, my fellow daily Newcastle, is good pals with him because he Kev.
00:20:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good man.
00:20:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, really?
00:20:31
Iain Mackay the Noo
Yeah, Kev works quite closely with him at different times.
00:20:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
like What man.
00:20:35
Iain Mackay the Noo
So there you go. Not that not that not that that meant I knew that.
00:20:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
but only overv
00:20:39
Iain Mackay the Noo
I just remember that he worked playing for Walker, not Wool's End, because they all come from Wool's End, don't they?
00:20:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Michael Carrick's run to mind. I think what I saw the name was, yeah.
00:20:46
Iain Mackay the Noo
Yeah, we never got him. Peter Beardsley. um Quite a few of them.
00:20:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nice, wow.
00:20:53
Iain Mackay the Noo
Maybe maybe even Alan Shearer as a younger bully. There you go.
00:20:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Walden, sound magic in the water at Walden Boys Club.
00:21:01
Iain Mackay the Noo
Yeah.
00:21:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Finn, Patrick Van Arnholt played ah plenty of times for Palace and notched 606 memorable minutes for Newcastle. Who is his famous footballing cousin? Is it A, Leroy Fair? B, Jeffrey Bruma? C, Luciano Narsing? Or D, David Matthew Van Arnhold?
00:21:30
Finn
Did he play for Newcastle, Patrick Van Ann Hall?
00:21:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
He had a very brief loan.
00:21:33
Iain Mackay the Noo
Played as a floor back, yeah.
00:21:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:35
Finn
oh cause
00:21:36
Iain Mackay the Noo
Loan period. He was good, actually, but then he went and played for Sunderland, which means he's not even allowed back at the city.
00:21:37
Finn
I was to say, I remember him playing for Sunderland, so I just thought, oh god. that's a yeah um So and of all the players, I'm going to take a guess. I'm going to say, is it Lee Royfer?
00:21:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
spot on yeah lemoy furs bob on yeah and so that was lucky dip really that one well you avoided the uh the red herring you avoided the red herring there with uh david matthew van arnhold who is the
00:22:00
Iain Mackay the Noo
How do you know that?
00:22:06
Iain Mackay the Noo
It's amazing. josh Just says, who's his famous cousin and then lists four footballers I've never heard of. No, I have heard of Leroy.
00:22:23
Iain Mackay the Noo
Yeah.
00:22:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
chief Chief operating officer of Goodman Logistics, UK holding limited. Found the one, UK, whatever you call it, company's house.
00:22:29
Iain Mackay the Noo
Right. It's just probably a probably a different cousin, that's all. He just doesn't play football.
00:22:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
It might be, yeah, yeah, it might be, the less famous one.
00:22:36
Finn
Thank you.
00:22:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Okay, Ian, to level things out, I want you to tell me, why was Johan Kabai denied access to the USA on a pre-season tour in 2011?
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Was it A, he'd been accused of breeding choruses, a designer cat banned in 19 states for sale. B, he'd been accused of not settling a dental bill. C, he'd angered border control by singing the Marseille every time he saw an American flag. Or D, his jawline was deemed too sharp to carry through airport security.
00:23:21
Iain Mackay the Noo
Nice one. I think, subconsciously, you've gone back to the jawline for your little jokey-quirky part four to give me the tip that it's because he hadn't paid his dentist.
00:23:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:23:33
Iain Mackay the Noo
It was a debt, wasn't it? It wouldn't let him in.
00:23:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wow, maybe or maybe it's ah it's a red herring, is it your final answer?
00:23:38
Iain Mackay the Noo
That's my final answer.
00:23:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
You are correct, you are correct. I don't have a tiebreaker available, so I think you're just gonna have to take tight the draw.
00:23:45
Iain Mackay the Noo
All right, hey. Two-two, that'll do.
00:23:50
Finn
ah dave
00:23:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Toothpick, yeah.
00:23:51
Iain Mackay the Noo
Why not?
00:23:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Both sides happy with that.
00:23:53
Iain Mackay the Noo
Well played. 100% each. 100% records each. That's that's.
00:23:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah. That's like Klopp and Guardiola.
00:24:00
Iain Mackay the Noo
We yeah we love Kabai and then we hated him when the when he went to Palace and it's not his fault that he went to Palace.
00:24:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:07
