Weekend Recap with Dan and Wale

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. With me today are Dan Tanner. How are you doing, Dan?
00:00:19
Dan Tanner
I'm doing all right. It's been an interesting weekend, so I kind of want to get into it and then we'll go from there, really.
00:00:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent, excellent. And also with me is Wale Bakare. How are you doing, Wale?
00:00:31
Wale Bakare
um All right, Joe, great to see you, great to see Dan as well. um I don't know. the The result during the weekend could have been worse, um especially considering the form and the fact that it was after the international outbreak. But you know a point to start over the season isn isn't a bad result. So I'm i'm raring to go as well.
00:00:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, definitely, as you say, a good way, a good place to pick up after the international break.

Crystal Palace vs Villa: A Draw Analysis

00:00:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not an easy place to go for the park, so to come away with a point, I think Palace will be quite happy. Today we're going to talk about that game and then also finish up by discussing our favourite younglings ever to have pulled on the famous ah red and blue at Southes Park.
00:01:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, as we spoke about there, Palace earned a point on their visit to Villa. It finished two goals apiece, the same scoreline as Palace's match two game weeks ago at Wolves. Classless men are finding more 2-2s in the West Midlands than at the Birmingham Ballet Company. What are your thoughts on this performance then?
00:01:41
Dan Tanner
Well, I think we got a decent result out of it. It is a draw, but there are still the same kind of issues that we've always had, like some of the negative side of it. We yet again, letting a goal through a fairly easy through ball to Ollie Watkins, which he's well, he's on what was exactly on form at the moment, but you don't want to give him that kind of space.
00:02:06
Dan Tanner
and that time ah kind of time to run at you. And it's basically slide pass, and so slide pass Hendo with an open goal.

The VAR Controversy and Penalty Decisions

00:02:15
Dan Tanner
And the equalizer at the very, very late into the game, I think is definitely like the 70 or 80 something minute. ah the The defending of the header was, I would probably say absolutely atrocious. ah it's just that It's still that problem with the zonal marking,
00:02:36
Dan Tanner
They're just standing there. There's seven inside the the six-yard box. It's, yeah, it's seven against two, and somehow um Ross Barkley, who's not exactly known for his heading, gets a largely uncontested free header. It's a good header, I'm giving him that. It's quite a bit of skill to loop it over all those guys and get it into the top corner. But it was just watching it over and over again, and it's just like, how did he get all of that sort of free space and free time.
00:03:07
Dan Tanner
But also saying that, on the other side, we got got an early goal from Saar, which was a nice finish.
00:03:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:03:17
Dan Tanner
He held off the defender as he's running about 10, 15 yards down, ah all the way there. And we got Hendo saved a penalty from a, well, I would consider a bit of a light penalty,
00:03:32
Dan Tanner
if you actually kind of watch it back, but that is a sentiment to other. That's basically what the modern premiership is, like very, very cheap and, well, soft penalties you'd probably consider. And next week somebody's going to go flying in a hundred miles an hour and take somebody out and it won't be a penalty. Oh, why? Because he got the ball. um so It's just stuff like that that kind of irks me when it comes to like the VAR and stuff like that. But that's a rant for another day.
00:04:01
Dan Tanner
And finally, we got our prospect coming in. We've got an insane month of ah first international appearance, first senior ah appearances and first goal all within the first month,

Palace's Strategy and Adaptation

00:04:18
Dan Tanner
all within the last month. So there are some positives to take away from this, but it's the problem still is we are dropping points and we are dropping leads that we really shouldn't be.
00:04:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i I agree with that summary more or less, I think. I was very pleased by the pragmatism of Klassner in the game. I thought they'd play a bit more aggressive and a bit higher pressing, as as they did to good effect um ah Villa at the back end of the final game of the season last year and also in the league cup earlier this season, but recognised with have all the injuries, with the likes of Eze and Ketir, Kamala out with only sort of
00:05:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
to two-and-a-half-fit central midfielders available. It made more sense to bed in, hit them on the counter where Villa have been vulnerable and that worked to great effect.

Defensive Challenges at Set-Pieces

00:05:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
It did work to such a great effect, as you say, Dan, that Palace took the lead twice and it concedes two goals that they probably probably shouldn't have.
00:05:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think you're right that defending on that corner at the end is poor. But that said, it's an absolute peach for delivery. That's completely perfect for Barkley to run onto.
00:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
But nevertheless, someone could probably be braver in contesting that if someone just sort of takes responsibility and sticks their head on it. What are your thoughts on the performance?
00:05:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
while they Do you reckon Palace should have held on for a win here?
00:05:53
Wale Bakare
but
00:05:56
Wale Bakare
Well, yeah, that's the it does feel like Palace could have held on and gotten the victory. But when you look at the fact that, um you know as you said earlier, Villa Park is not the easiest place to go, especially after an international break. ah The games after the international window are difficult and enough. ah Then put the fact that it was Villa Park.
00:06:21
Wale Bakare
ah They also haven't had a very great start to the season particularly at home I think they've had two wings three draws and one loss That stadium usually was a fortress for them last season in their run to finishing fourth They won, you know the vast majority of games there remember they've also lost a palace already at home in the League Cup this season So it was a game where I'm sure they would have wanted a victory I'm sure Villa fans or Villa themselves will look at that gate that result and say we should be getting three points against Palace, especially in the form you know that Palace are in at the moment. ah When you mix all of that with the injury troubles for Palace, the form again, because Palace could easily have lost the game based on where the team's confidence is, the team's belief is at the moment. When they look at the table, I'm sure they don't feel very confident.
00:07:16
Wale Bakare
But they went to Villa pack, you know, um took the lead twice. Fantastic finish by Smilasa. I wasn't very confident it was going to bury the chance. He could have had an another goal, you know, early in the first half, but unfortunately couldn't bury that. And i'm um I'm just particularly happy for, you know, the young start of any.
00:07:40
Wale Bakare
um great finish, um it was composed, he could easily have fluffed his lines or blazed it over. um ah you know A lot of players see the headlines just before finishing the goal in those situations but he was composed and you know put the ball in and unfortunately it didn't turn out to be the winner for Palace, it turned out to be you know ah just taking the lead again but ah um I'm all about taking the positives from traveling to a very difficult stadium with the founder Pallisa in getting a point. I know we've said this before this season, it's ah bench but is a benchmark to build on, it's ah it's hopefully you know the start of you know better results to come but
00:08:29
Wale Bakare
if If we were at tonight, you know, talking about a loss to Crystal Palace, we might not entirely be very surprised, but getting a draw at Villa Park, maybe it's not the worst of results.
00:08:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:08:41
Wale Bakare
They played maybe not to, you know, the ah level we know Palace can play, but there were some and interesting in um performances in that game.
00:08:52
Wale Bakare
I was particularly happy for Ismaila, so I could say finally showing up, but but this was what we said when he was signed. It he has the abilities. he has you know We know what he's able to do, but is he able to to to consistently deliver that that that we're not sure of? If we can get the Saudi goal on Saturday every week, then it would be an amazing sign. and But um he turned up on Saturday, got the goal, got the assist, well, ah for the second goal from Palace perspective, play of the match for me. but
00:09:28
Wale Bakare
I'll take the result. It wasn't a win, but it it was a well-deserved point from a very difficult stadium.
00:09:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it sars right to your attention too. Completely unbiasedly I'd say, there were shades of Gareth Bale retiring Mike on against Inter Milan there. It's ah a bit early for poor Ian Mattson to call to eye on his career, but you might want to consider it after what Sa did so and on Saturday. um But let's take a pause there and have a word from our sponsor.
00:10:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
So carrying on a chat about the villa draw, I want to focus on some particular players. So who stood out for you in this game, Dan?
00:10:36
Dan Tanner
I think Hendo kind of stood out for me, really. I know he was good a slightly at fault for the goal against... you can see that he kind of ran out to kind of take out Ollie Watkins there, had really no choice at that point. He was one-on-one, so he had to go and try and at least try and stop it.
00:11:01
Dan Tanner
But I think the the the penalty save was just immense. It just sort of hits his bottom hat and it just stops dead almost. And it was it was a great penalty save. It was a form like that. Pickford might actually start to have something to worry about in the England goal. And I think it was another um one slightly earlier where it looked like a certain goal and it just stops it. It go he takes it underneath his body and it just this controls it perfectly.
00:11:30
Dan Tanner
so up ah For my standout one over the weekend would have probably been Hendo the the rest of the team kind of work kind of there but there were just too many little mistakes that kind of cost us in the end and We can't we're gonna keep bringing up to have any many many times on the next what 15 20 minutes So um he's always gonna get at least a little bit of a shout. We like the the Academy boys coming good and I know Finn's going to be ah bringing it up probably a couple of times as well because that's always his favourite subject.
00:12:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I, Jan Nwooji,

Henderson's Key Saves

00:12:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hendo Fon was my absolute pick as well. This game, what a penalty save. That was the way he leaps sort of diagonally across the closing angle.
00:12:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And as you say, Dan, such a strong hand to tip it kind of wide and over the bar. It's really exceptional. And I remember that save you talk about in the first half as well.
00:12:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Think it's from a Watkins effort towards his near post.
00:12:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
like yeah yeah Yeah kind of wrong foot save and he manages to completely shift his weight and not only get a hand to it but actually bring it under control and hold it. It's very very impressive. um What about you Wylie? Any standout players you'd like to highlight?
00:12:33
Dan Tanner
Yeah, I think it's Watkins again is fairly close range from almost the same spot where he scores from, but he just stops it and goes underneath him.
00:12:55
Wale Bakare
Well, well, we I did mention our impressive award with a smile a star, you know, um um I'm glad, you know, it turned up, as I said, Justin Deveni had a great game. Of course, not just because it's got the goal, but his overall, you know, performance in the game. ah Dean Anderson, ah you know, made some top saves, um continues to Even though there are times when you know the you you feel like you could make that mistake, but then ah you you'd back him to to make a save almost every time he faces a shot. And that particular ah shot by Oliwakken could easily have gone in, but it almost made it very, very easy.
00:13:41
Wale Bakare
and you know his reaction after making such a top save is what I love. It but it makes it seem like ah you know he was nothing and he just picked the ball and you know get on with the game and and that that was great. The three back lines, I was watching the game and I was thinking As great as Mark Gay is, it does seem like Max's La Croix has been you know the best of the the defensive three ah in the games that he's played. He's really endearing himself to the Palace fans. Yes, he's made one or two errors. ah Maybe one directly led to a goal the other day against Fulham.
00:14:24
Wale Bakare
It's been a great player, a great addition to the squad and I think it played well against Villa. I really would have loved if you know ah the the game ended too and bought 45 minutes without conceding that Villa Park was always going to be difficult. And I think a lot of the players delivered and ah gave ah did good for themselves. Deveni, Ayesma Alassar, Dean Anderson are the top picks for me.
00:14:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Lacroix is a really good one to highlight as well for this game. I think he's probably... You could criticise him for ah the first goal, the Watkins goal. I think when you're playing a back three like that, because you've got a bit less few less men in the midfield,
00:15:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
centre backs in the back three, someone needs to step up to put pressure on the ball there and he does it, he does it kind of at the wrong moment and it makes what makes McGinn's mind that form makes his pass quite easy through to Watkins but Other than that, it was a titanic performance from the court. Three interceptions, five tackles, won five out of six ground drills, two out of two aerial drills. I mean, he absolutely bossed that defense and made a really vital kind of and intervention with.
00:15:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Watkins breaking away late as well, which I think some Villa fans gave some weak shouts for penalty as well. But he's, yeah, I think he's got the makings of a ah really top centre back. So quick, strong, big and capable on the ball. I think the court could be a really elite footballer. And yeah.
00:16:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think on that we can wrap up our discussion of Villa Palace and take a word from the network before having a chat about our favourite young boys having to come through and wear the Palace shirt.
00:16:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
So of course, one of the big stories of the day was Justin Deveny scoring on just his second Prem appearance. Channeling your inner grandmothers, I want you to tell me

Spotlight on Young Talents

00:17:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
who your favourite young lads from Palace History are, starting from, starting with you, Dan.
00:17:09
Dan Tanner
um Well, um I was trying to not go for the immediate Wilfred Zaha because that was too obvious. He's got pretty much every record going at the moment. So I think there's only one or two that might get close, but even then they've got to get a lot of goals and a lot of assists that even get anywhere near him. But the one I was sort of looking at um was ah Victor Moses.
00:17:36
Dan Tanner
um because he falls into one of those categories um for the palace prospect that they like to do every once in a while, and that is the freak of nature. He was a big lad for about 17, very similar to sort of um ah Adam Tyore from Wolves and Full of Fame.
00:17:59
Dan Tanner
um He was just a big guy and I kept moving him around from position to position. I think he started off as kind of a center forward. He got moved to like a lot of winger, central midfield, just to try and get somewhere where he could be effective. But he also outside of Palace managed to get create a fairly decent career for himself. Played for ah teams like Chelsea, Liverpool,
00:18:24
Dan Tanner
into Milan for a little while. um I think the last time I heard it, he was playing for Spartak Moscow and Fenebache. And I think up until fairly recently, I think he was a free agent. I think he was um picked up by Luton Town. So um he's still going, which is still impressive. As well as that, he's got 30 odds Nigeria caps. So he's managed to make a ah period of a ah career query for himself.
00:18:52
Dan Tanner
But it was more the the freak of nature bit, which Palace like to get these guys that do sort of one thing really well, put him in with like the slots and the ballasties of the world.
00:19:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think he's a good shout for it tomorrow. He's mega versatile, mega professional. And if you look at the sort of story of his childhoods, which is, I'm going to say, too grim for this podcast, it's really like one of those people who makes you feel bad about how little you've achieved with a normal life finding because it's like, wow, yeah, to come back from what he experienced as a kid and and make it as a top footballer is really very impressive. So I think real success story of the academy there victimizes great choice. Who have you plumped for? like
00:19:44
Wale Bakare
Well. Well, it's quite easy to go for the attackers. but It's quite easy to you know go for the goalscorers, but I wanted it' to go for someone who you know I was particularly excited about. And it was really great. ah Well, at Palace, maybe not so great when he left, but hopefully we'll recover his form. And that's Aaron Wan-Bissaka for me. He

Wan-Bissaka's Defensive Mastery

00:20:07
Wale Bakare
was a very good defender when he was at Palace.
00:20:11
Wale Bakare
He was great defending, it was great you know going forward. It was almost like every time it went down to sliding, it was almost going to recover the ball. It would appear, oh, it's going to foul him, and then it just brings the ball away.
00:20:27
Wale Bakare
and and does it so so so clearly and everyone wanted them and I know that maybe things didn't go exactly the way he wanted at United and it's easy now to say oh I don't know why we signed him for a lot of United fans but at that time they were really excited about bringing Aaron Rampisaka in and you know the Palace made a lot of money I think about 48 million pounds there about you know Palace made you know from selling him and he was one of those players he wasn't getting the goals it wasn't you know dribbling he was just getting the job done uh was was very clinical in defense um just went about his business and it was one that really had a very bright future uh in one or two games i've seen him for westam this season does look like he's recovering that form uh just a little bit but
00:21:16
Wale Bakare
but When he was at Palace, it was definitely ah the star player in that position, in the league, and anyone would have wanted him. And it went to United at the time.
00:21:27
Wale Bakare
And for for me, fantastic player. um I should mention Ben Watson from many years ago. um So it's a good shout as well. Maybe Wayne Routledge as well, although it went on to so many.
00:21:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:21:39
Wale Bakare
it's It's very interesting when you look at some players and you see the long list of clubs that they played for.
00:21:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah. Well, I thought researching for this, I was re-struck by just the sheer number of people who've made Davie's Age 18 or under for Crystal Palace is incredible. Like a list of 50 odds before you're getting anywhere near to 19 on the youngest ever players to play a senior game for Palace. It's very impressive. Speaks to the strength of the Academy and the will to use it.
00:22:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I love Rambasaka. I think he's a great show. he He tackles like he's got six knees. His legs wrap around in implausible ways. And it's incredible. It makes him one of the most effective one-on-one defenders. I mean, in, I'm going to say, in the modern game, maybe in prep history, he's really special in his ability to just nick a ball off her.
00:22:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
offer forward. I remember Wilf Zaha complaining about that when the Palace played United a couple of years ago that he was in one-on-one, felt he'd got around the defender to his left shoulder and was ready to take a shot and then went, oh no, it's when the soccer, no, his leg's just going to come flying in out of nowhere like a chameleon's tongue and set the ball off me. ah I think he's kind of, he's also underrated on the ball because of his weird limbiness and the fact that his shoes that are gonna fly off his feet while he runs stuff like that. Kind of all right actually, much more in control than he appears. ah And yeah, all powered too in that West Ham. I hope I go as well. The one I've picked is just Johnny Williams. Not so much for what I did for Palace. I just think he's an entertaining figure. ah Most

debut at 17.
00:23:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
really talented player and because he was injured so much he sort of felt perpetually young like he was waiting for him to break through sneeze at the end of your nose and then suddenly rocks up at Sunderland you discover all this this young starlet is now mostly bold and is is no longer the prospect we once thought he was.
00:23:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
I discovered in researching this that he was once recalled from a loan at MK Dons to solve an injury crisis in the Palace squad, which feels a bit like bringing in Balotelli to improve the discipline in your changing room. It doesn't really seem like a great solution to me. um But I think he's had a nice story because rather than a career of what could have been because of his involvement with this Wales team that went all the way to a Euro semi-final and did great things in other tournaments. He's become a hero to a nation, Wales, whose name I now read as Wale's all the time, thanks to this podcast. ah and And that's nice, you know, he could have and could so easily have been a disappointing career, but
00:24:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
because of his unique skill set and his heavy involvement in that quite romantic national side. um He's had, he's a nice poetic one. I think it'll look back on very fondly. And yeah, I think it's a nice story, Johnny Williams, if not specifically a palace legend, exactly. Yeah, I think that is about all we've got time for today. So Dan and Wale, thanks very much for joining me as ever.
00:25:09
Wale Bakare
Thanks, Joe.
