Introduction & Podcast Banter
00:00:16
Speaker
Hey boys and girls, welcome to another Triple T for Knife Makers podcast. I am your host, Dennis Terrell of Terrell Knife Works, and my dickhead co-host, Jared Sandoval of Echo Blades.
00:00:30
Speaker
Hey! Hey! How's it hanging? It's good now. nothing no Nothing is a surefire way to change my mood than just simply doing a couple of things while you're doing your intro. It just brings me sweet joy.
00:00:49
Speaker
Oh, man. Yes, you never cease to annoy the fuck out of me. Ha ha ha! Ha ha! Ha ha! ah That's good.
00:01:01
Speaker
That's good. I just talked to yesterday, but what's new?
Scheduling Confusion & Travel Plans
00:01:05
Speaker
Was it yesterday? yeah Yeah, it was. you know You know, I literally this happened by a couple hours ago.
00:01:14
Speaker
ah I said to Kim, like, what do you why you watching football? Are you watching a rerun? She's like, no, I'm watching Monday Night Football. And I said, but it's Tuesday. yeah And she said, ah don't you have a podcast and tape today? And I literally said, no, that was yesterday.
00:01:30
Speaker
Oh, Jesus. I'm all fucked up. Yeah. Me too. I don't know if I said this last week, but I'm i'm supposed to go to back up to Washington next week.
00:01:42
Speaker
And for the past like two or three weeks, I've been thinking it was this week. And it's like, really, I don't know. It's a long story, but it's really fucked me all up. Like, yeah, hate it when that happens.
00:01:56
Speaker
And it's just like, oh, my God, I have a whole nother week. So I don't know. And unfortunately, it would benefit me if it was this week. to have this trip coming up there's some things that would be like work yeah it would be much better attended to this week than holding off until next week but it is what it is but yeah it's been really messing with me so are you going all week next week uh no wednesday to friday all you're not gonna miss a show No, no. Because I'll replace your ass.
00:02:27
Speaker
Like, totally. like Like I just did? Yes. Okay. I think it's it's it's okay, you know? I mean, whatever. We'll be fine.
Birthday Shout-outs & Hammer Talk
00:02:40
Speaker
Oh, so, oh, before I forget, we had a little birthday today, a little birthday announcement. Our friend Frank and Nita, Nita has a birthday today, I just saw online, so happy birthday, Nita.
00:02:57
Speaker
Happy birthday, Nita. Nita, it's your birthday. There you go. Oh, and...
00:03:09
Speaker
If you need a hammer, you need you need one of those peens, go check out Two Bastards. Texas Smithian Supplies, go get yourself a hammer. go talk to Frank. Go talk to Nita.
00:03:22
Speaker
Wish her a happy birthday. Get yourself a hammer and any other supplies you need from ah Two Bastards. They got all the peens, the straights, the diagonals, the curvies.
00:03:34
Speaker
Because, Jared, what do we always say? Ain't it grand to have a fat peen in your hand? And I was very nervous there for a minute because I thought you were going to tell people to go check out Nita's fat peen. Come on and And then I was like, well, that's Frank. And then I like went through this whole thing. This all just happened two seconds ago.
00:03:53
Speaker
And then, yeah. Give me some credit, man. And here we are. But now I'm realizing that I didn't. So,
00:04:03
Speaker
yeah, but it is grand and it is great. And I was just thinking to myself that all of, I don't know why, but I got the diagonal peen, fat ass diagonal peen.
00:04:15
Speaker
And I don't know why I didn't get the double crooked double diagonal. Yeah. Like that would have made way more sense to, to have both.
00:04:26
Speaker
Instead I got, a right-handed, I believe, or I don't remember what it was. And it's got just a regular flat line. Yeah. Yeah. In theory. Now, I don't know why I just thought about it randomly today as I was, think was talking to Brent or something, but I was like, yeah, I should have got the double diagonal. Cause somehow I was thinking about like, you know, there's a time when you're trying to get, you know, in that weird angle.
00:04:51
Speaker
And then if you just flip the hammer, like it would switch the pin, like it would work. And it would, it's like, it It's one of those, i think it's one of those, if you want to do something quick, like flipping the hammer over is quicker than switching hammers.
00:05:13
Speaker
And it's probably pretty rare. Like you're going to use, this is my theory. You're going to use one diagonal or the other on a particular project, right? Like you're, you can't.
00:05:26
Speaker
So... you're probably going to pick up that hammer, select the diagonal that you want and use it. But if you then need to plan ish and you need, now you need to put the hammer down. Yeah. But I'm i'm saying like, if you get, yeah, you're going to be in that awkward position where you need the other angle on the, on the diagonal.
00:05:45
Speaker
That, would that would be good because now I'm screwed. Like I i don't have that. but like yeah Yes. You know, that's what I'm saying. like But that's the argument of having like, you know, If you have two hammers, have two hammers, one with each. The whole but point of this thing is that, yeah, you need more peens. And that's the good thing with the, with the fat peen is, you know, if your peen's too small, you're going to put some small, you know, really fine dents in there. but if you've got a big ass peen, then you could just, you know, go to town and then you can planish on the next heat with your other guy.
00:06:19
Speaker
So anyways, it was just one of those things that I was thinking about. And so, yeah, anyways. yeah I don't even have a diagonal pin hammer. Yeah. that was in my meditation yeah I don't know who recommended it. was probably my buddy Nick Rollins or Derek Miles. It's probably both of them that they were preaching to that thing. and you know cause Sometimes the straight and the cross just don't don't get you where you need to be.
00:06:46
Speaker
so Hold your work at a 45 degree angle. I don't get it. you don't get anything that you don't have. That's the beauty of being Dennis. If you don't have it, it's stupid.
00:06:58
Speaker
We've already covered this a million times. I'm just, you're not saying it now. I've never had the, the, now there's times I wish I had a cross bean or used across. I mean, I have one. I just don't have it on the, the regular rotation.
00:07:18
Speaker
Options are good, my friend. yeah That's all. Options are good. I could fit a few more hammers on the at the anvil, so probably should get a couple. Yeah, I agree.
00:07:30
Speaker
Yeah, cool. Yes, cool. Let's
Autocorrect Mishaps & Phone Frustrations
00:07:33
Speaker
go. What's next? Tell me. ah The fact that you never proofread your posts. you No, I don't.
00:07:43
Speaker
You knew I was going to bring this up. That's fine. So it was a nice thought to do the little post about my birthday. So Jared puts a post up, and he invites me to collab on it.
00:07:56
Speaker
And it was a great gesture. It was like a happy birthday. I think it was a callback from when we are at Maker Camp. Yes. But when you actually read the post, like if you read the text that you wrote, it was something about us getting longer, and I'm pretty sure you meant...
00:08:13
Speaker
we were younger younger yeah and it was like and then i i showed it to kim i said kim read this and she's like a you two getting longer together what's that right i mean there's there's a couple of things to that right and one of them's super uncomfortable right and and the other one is that i am in the market right now to to upgrade my phone because there comes the point on the on your iphone where you're you're for me anyways, like it doesn't matter what I do. Like i'm I'm typing and shit just doesn't come out the way that I'm doing. It's like uncalibrated or whatnot. So that's one reason that doesn't explain the millions of other times that it are the next ones that are going to happen afterwards. Right. So it's compounded. Right.
00:08:59
Speaker
But, but I do have this thing that, you know, a lot of us have, and I like to refer to it as when I hear people say that they have,
00:09:11
Speaker
this particular, um, deal. Um, it's commonly used as like, you know, uh, just, uh, this, Oh, I'm distracted or, you know, I, I want to change things, but the way I describe mine is fucking relentless.
00:09:27
Speaker
It never fucking stops. So part of that is what, what does it, I don't know why I'm losing your, the, the neurodivergency it's yeah. And then it's a real deal. Right. So, but it is, it's relentless. Like,
00:09:41
Speaker
It's always there. It never goes away. It's not just a shop thing. it's like So what happens for me is that I'll type things, but i I literally, while I'm doing it, I'll see what I'm thinking, and then I'm fucking um busy guy, right? So I'm doing stuff.
00:09:57
Speaker
And you're right. I don't take the time to go back and read it, but the fucked up part is that if I go back and I read it, I still read what I want to say. I don't fucking see it. Like I was clueless. And when you were like, you, you, you wrote me back. I looked at it and said, that fucking says longer.
00:10:11
Speaker
Like, Oh my God, like that is really bad. And then you're like, you know, yeah and I said, well, fuck you. Then it's deleted. And I unwish you a happy birthday in this special moment. So, but ah yeah, that is, that is a a deal. The only time I do slow down is, you know, like ah on a work email and even there, are some times it's like, I'll,
00:10:32
Speaker
you know just it just It's part of the deal for me. um It happens all the time. That's why I didn't do the post this week. No, I'm kidding.
00:10:43
Speaker
But ah yeah, the the new phone too is is something I need to to address. But yeah, um guilty as charged. Yeah, i on the phone thing, ah my old phone, like...
00:10:56
Speaker
I don't know what it is. My brain works faster than the iPhone keyboard. And I used to be able to type. I don't know if they changed something, but I used to be able to type perfectly and it would figure out what I want.
00:11:08
Speaker
And now I feel like, It's fucking terrible. And I have to look at what I'm typing in order to get it right. And I'm missing keys. And I don't know if they hit they made the hit area smaller on those things. I don't get it.
00:11:24
Speaker
because i sure hope not. because or Or I'm getting old and I just can't type because, I mean... I look down and it's just fucking gibberish.
00:11:36
Speaker
And, and I'm going as fast as I can. Cause I type really fast and I'm like, Oh man, if I was on a keyboard, i can type, you know,
00:11:49
Speaker
150 words a minute, but probably close to 200. And on the iPhone, I don't know what what's happened. I feel like I'm getting slower and slower as time goes on. No, I agree.
00:11:59
Speaker
I don't know what it is either, but it's auto-correcting to like anything but what I want it to say. that's That's for sure. I did just move up to the new bigger phone, so maybe that'll help.
00:12:11
Speaker
Maybe the keys would be a tiny bit better. I went down to Verizon to to do some pricing and stuff and The last one I think I just bought outright and save myself all the hassle of going down to the Verizon store. Cause that, that could just, that's just a waste of time.
00:12:28
Speaker
And then there, now I got to like, if I want to upgrade or take the trade in or do all that, um and we have to redo our plan and that shit's already expensive enough. And then I'm like, Oh, we're going to give you a free iPad. I'm like, Oh, that's great. Cause I need one.
00:12:44
Speaker
I don't, you know, it's just, I'm that guy. They sell me on stupid shit all the time. So anyways, I haven't done it. I walked out. i said, I gotta go talk to the boss before I do anything. So, but um yeah, that I gotta, I gotta do that.
00:12:57
Speaker
I think I have 13, so I'm really proud of myself. Yeah. Yeah. I'm really proud of myself. Cause it's been prior to that. I was like every year, I can't wait to to upgrade.
00:13:07
Speaker
So the, the new, the new camera on this one, Because it's got like 4 million cameras on it now. It's actually pretty good. Takes me a nice picture. That's what I heard. On the 17th.
00:13:20
Speaker
Like the one one time every five years I'm up to date on a phone. Cool. That's what I feel like.
Golf Stories & Challenges
00:13:28
Speaker
ah All right. Enough of that bullshit.
00:13:33
Speaker
So we had some fun yesterday. i I thought so. Yeah. Yeah. Got to go out. Mr. Jared took me golfing. I was supposed to go with my son, Logan, but he got sick and couldn't join us.
00:13:46
Speaker
But yeah, that was a bit of a bummer, man. I was kind of looking forward to to that. i was i was thinking that you probably would have, it would have been a little bit more enjoyable for you, you know, to to kind of do that. Because I think every time I try to sell this thing that I'm doing right now, I mean, I love golf regardless, but Golfing with my son is has just been some of the really coolest, just a really cool time.
00:14:12
Speaker
i mean, we golfed. This is how bad both of us have it right now. We golfed Saturday morning, um and we got caught up in like they were doing a tournament or something like that. So we weren't able to finish our round.
00:14:25
Speaker
It was just too slow, so we bailed out. And then, um, when you say we, you meant you and your son. Yeah. My son. Yeah. Uh, and then, um, that's why was saying how bad we have it.
00:14:37
Speaker
We're just kind of hooked right now. Uh, and then, so we bailed and then we went back later that night to finish the round that we started at like four 30. And then we went but with you, did our stuff.
00:14:52
Speaker
You and I went up to the clubhouse and had lunch. And then that little bastard is like, Hey, You want to go do another night? So we got 27 holes yesterday. And I'll tell you what, I don't care how lame you say it is or anybody says it is, man.
00:15:07
Speaker
I was hurting. Like there's a lot of, uh, it's a lot of swinging. It's a lot of swinging. It's a lot of, or so for me. but Yeah. Hey dude, for real though, I was super impressed. Like I was really, really, there's two things. Like if you're going to go, if you're, if you golf, you know,
00:15:25
Speaker
yeah there's, there is an etiquette, right. ah Yes. You know, keeping, keeping pace and like not, you know, just being aware of other people in front of you and behind you is, is, is pretty important. And um you know, if, if somebody doesn't know or hasn't been, you kind of feel like an asshole, like correcting them or, you know, because you want them enjoy themselves, but you also, you know, don't want to ruin everybody else's time. Right.
00:15:50
Speaker
So I was always a little apprehensive for me, but I appreciate that you, we're keeping it moving and, and you know, if you were not doing great, you pick the ball up and we'd move on or you weren't spending 17 putts to try to get it in.
00:16:04
Speaker
And, um, but I was ah more so than anything, I was gearing up to just talk a gang of shit about how crappy and retarded. I don't believe I just said that, but, uh, uh, how bad you were, but I was really impressed. Yeah. You had a pretty basic, uh, decent swing and, uh,
00:16:23
Speaker
and the My favorite part of the whole thing was i was like, you know, I feel like I could just do a couple things. I could get you hitting the ball and you're just like, yeah, no, this, this, no, I'm not. Yeah. This is nothing I want to, you know, down, you know, this is not what I want to do. i don't know. And I was like, okay, okay. so So I just let you go, but it was cool.
00:16:44
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, I used, i used to golf like once a week when I first moved to California. It was like a little executive time. I probably played or hit balls, you know, once or more than once a week.
00:17:00
Speaker
So, and then I took lessons and, and now it's just, it's just a lot of, it's a lot of time. It's time. effort That's the, that's the thing. It's time. It is it is not like riding a bike. Like you, it's, uh, you know, you lose it completely if you don't play.
00:17:22
Speaker
You have to keep it up. and And it's one of those, I just don't, I don't want the investment to, you know, I like to go out once, maybe twice a year, have some fun, sure you know, hit the ball. But that's why I i don't keep score.
00:17:38
Speaker
if ah Mentally, if I keep score, it's just... irritates the shit out of me of how bad I'm doing. The fact that like, I, if I just take that, I learned this a long time ago. If I just take that out of the game, I actually enjoyed the game more than like keeping score.
00:17:56
Speaker
So I, I respect for that. Like I asked you what you got. You're like, i don't keep scoring. I was like, ah I dig that. I figured it out. It wasn't anybody that we know. ah but I gave Dennis every time he got a ah punctuation mark of some kind. So,
00:18:11
Speaker
He had a three ampersand, some exclamation points and pluses and minuses, some periods. Did those mean something to you? Nope. okay so and That's ah some guy. I know that he went and golf with his grandson and that's, that's how they would keep score.
00:18:27
Speaker
So the the kid was, you know, be encouraged, you know, no matter what. And I thought that was cool. So, um, yeah, but I mean, it it really is a time. And that was what I was kind of hoping that you were just going to get out there and, you know, spend it and spend the afternoon with, with your son and,
00:18:41
Speaker
in my, you know, just have a good time and enjoy. It was beautiful day though, man. God, it was. Yeah, it was really nice. About as gorgeous as you could be. Yeah. It wasn't too hot. um It was a little warm, but I was hoping it was 10 degrees cooler, but yeah, it was beautiful. That's a beautiful course too.
00:18:57
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. It's, it's pretty cool. Yeah. That's one we' around here for sure. So lots of water, lots of little waterfalls and yeah, it was, it was nice. Yeah. There's so much water that I just found myself doing a Facebook market drug deal.
00:19:11
Speaker
On golf balls. So this morning. I went through like at least six balls on that course. ah That's not bad. That's not bad. i yeah you can You can do it. i I normally play like an older ball or something like that. and But I had been using the same balls for a while now. So I busted out a brand new sleeve in the first hole.
00:19:34
Speaker
Bloop. One in the water. Second shot. Bloop. The next one in the water. Hole sleeve in the first two holes. I haven't done that in God. I don't know how long. I was just like, I don't get it. But anyways, I go and find some some deals on some golf balls. And I i met this dude. at in oh I'm to leave the garage open.
00:19:52
Speaker
I'm at this dude's garage at like 7 o'clock this morning. It's like 645, 7 o'clock. And ah scoring some golf balls on the marketplace. So and that marketplace isn that's a hook, man.
00:20:03
Speaker
You've got everything you need there. Well, I remember when I was first into scuba diving, that was a big thing, um going scuba diving in ponds. Like, obviously, I'd get permission and da-da-da-da.
00:20:16
Speaker
But going scuba diving in ponds and golf courses for golf balls. That, yeah, you It's big. lot of money. Yeah, you can, for sure. lot of money. For Because those things don't decay in water.
00:20:29
Speaker
um Well, unless it's winter, but. Yeah, not don't get here, but. Yeah. Those things are expensive too. So anyways, yeah, this is a triple T golf time hour here. that area yeah We've lost plus four of those five listeners, but anyways, it was a good time for that. I had had a lot of fun.
00:20:51
Speaker
and Thank you. and Thank you for the, uh, the offer and taking us out. Absolutely. I might hit you up again. Uh, if I can, uh, once Logan's feeling better, maybe yeah next month or something.
00:21:03
Speaker
Anytime. and yeah We'll be out. It'll be cooler. That's sure. It's wet. Now it's raining like hell here. I just got a flood warning. So yeah my pool's overflowing today.
00:21:16
Speaker
which is crazy. It's tough out here, man. Real bad extreme weather here. I remember seeing these pictures of like, we we had a big storm and it's like one of the... Chairs blew over. Yeah, it's the best. California hurricane their chairs blew over.
Knife-Making Progress & Techniques
00:21:40
Speaker
man. So, did you make it in the shop? I did. I actually did. I went out. Tell Both days. I'm i'm just i'm in the hand sanding deal, but I got a handle fit up, the front sanded up.
00:21:55
Speaker
um So I, just because I can't finish anything, I'm going to have one more hand sand, and then I'll have like just a ah glue up.
00:22:12
Speaker
factory and then handle shaping and stuff. So, no, that's good. Well, at least like a process like a process or the, the batch type thing. Yeah. I was going to say how many of them are like router type handles. All of them are going to be. Oh, okay. So you're going to like, yep.
00:22:28
Speaker
so up and then just That's awesome. Yeah. That'll go quick. Yep. So getting there, uh, making things. And then, and even though I'm not like putting out a lot of work here lately and it's, you know, the,
00:22:40
Speaker
Yeah, and yeah I'm making it, it's not like it's a secret or anything, but you know even though i still found myself this, I think it was last Friday, selling an order.
00:22:53
Speaker
i was like, it's going to be a minute, but you know. like
00:22:59
Speaker
I'd love to make you something 2029. Oh man, but it was pretty cool. was good. is that
00:23:07
Speaker
oh man but it was pretty cool I just can't help myself. Yeah. I just start to get into sales, Jared. And it's like, you here we go. Hey, get them in the books.
00:23:19
Speaker
Yeah. That's, that's what counts. So, yeah. Well, speaking of finishing work, Parker, actually he finished it a week and a half ago. I'm just been lazy about getting it on the website, but there is another P dog knife, a knife up on the website, which is good. It's one of the sand tigers came out really nice.
00:23:37
Speaker
Cool. that One of those. I'm going to butcher the name of this wood, but Goncalo Alves. Alves? It's like a wood from Argentina or something.
00:23:49
Speaker
It's really nice. Cool. When does he ship out? um He's got to do... We had a little hiccup, but he's got to do...
00:24:03
Speaker
think he'll get the go ahead this week or next week to go to maps uh which is like medical does all this stuff and then it'll probably be a month so it's at this point what are we at here december 13th so it's october but yeah Why did say dis December?
00:24:25
Speaker
October 13th. ah So he'll probably ship out probably around mid to the end of November. Gotcha. Which sucks because for sure he's going to be in basic over Christmas and Thanksgiving probably.
00:24:42
Speaker
So that kind of blows unless they hold him until after Thanksgiving. And they may. Yeah. We just don't know. Yeah. So.
00:24:54
Speaker
Cool. yeah, we'll see. And speaking of sons, it's Logan's birthday tomorrow, which will be today for listeners on the 14th. Nice.
00:25:05
Speaker
Yeah. Have a 22-year-old. It's crazy. A 20-year-old and a 22-year-old. Mm-hmm. I don't how your kids are younger than two of mine, but.
00:25:19
Speaker
That's weird. You started earlier. Oh, yeah. Apparently I did. Oh, man. say Oh, that's what I was going say. So i I messaged Toby today and told him, i said, ah Hey buddy, just want to give you a shout out, say what's up. And then let you know that I was talking some shit about you to, to Dennis. Cause you sang him happy birthday. And I told him, I was like, I was going to, and I never did cause you pissed me off.
00:25:43
Speaker
But, uh, but he, uh, uh, I don't know how, how it said, but I was super busy at work that day and and I just, I didn't have a moment to do it. And,
00:25:55
Speaker
i was like Well, that's because Toby doesn't have a real job. I know. I told him. Oh, okay. Well, I told him myself today. so Yeah. I told him in a message like the day after you said that.
00:26:07
Speaker
Yeah. Just because he had messaged me for something else. so That's funny. I told him myself today. so
00:26:15
Speaker
yeah Yeah. So what have you been up to? You got you got back. You got the shoo-shoo flu. And then you're back at it. You make some progress this week or? I have been forging like a madman. well i did I finished that folder. I got that up on the website along with Parker's knife.
00:26:33
Speaker
so So that one's up there. um And now i'm I'm at the point where all of the current... pro Well, I got one knife that I'm doing for...
00:26:46
Speaker
a colleague, ex-colleague, um old guy, old old Oracle pal that I used to work with. He's actually going to come for a class in a couple of weeks, but this will be his second knife that he's purchased from me.
00:27:04
Speaker
So um just ah just a stainless steel knife. So I'm working on that. but And we're back.
00:27:14
Speaker
uh i hate there's one thing i hate about this mike is if i hit the bottom of it where the wires plugged in and it it loosens the connection and then i have to like reset everything pisses me off huh it's weird it killed the show though yeah well i i um oh there's the screen which oh gotcha that's the only way i can get back in which is dumb but but any ah What were we talking about? Oh, yeah. So doing the chef knife.
00:27:44
Speaker
So I'm doing that, but then doing a shit ton of forging. um So working on a mosaic, i trying to finish that up, working on some forging that's going to be...
00:27:59
Speaker
If all goes well, it might be one of those failure videos this week's triple T we'll see. Um, and then I'm also working on, um ah video that I've been, I've had thoughts of for a long time.
00:28:14
Speaker
uh, this is, this is what we're going to get into next is, um, some recco was supposed to come down. here I have, I have an idea here, but if you're, if you don't want to spend all this time, all this frustration,
00:28:29
Speaker
doing your own forging. I would say you go check out Koi at Baker Forge and Tool Koi and the boys. excuse me um will They make the ah the best pattern-wilded steel around. This week's drop is Sunset Gomai Wavy.
00:28:44
Speaker
a Fan favorite returns with a 100-layer Damascus cladding and a vibrant copper bronze copper bronze copper shim stack and a 1080 core creating a radiant gradient look.
00:28:57
Speaker
Available now on our website. That's their website, bakerforgentool.com. um You can also ah check out the app, ah early access to the drops one day.

00:29:28
Speaker
ah the nano ceramic coating to protect the knives after you're all done. gator skin, That's back and ready to go. And so just go ahead and load up that cart with all the wonderful stuff and use the discount code triple T for 10% off.
00:29:43
Speaker
And you may, he mentioned going mentioned in that description, creating a gradient gradient look. And that's one of the topics I want to discuss today.
00:29:55
Speaker
So, which is gradients. Sure. And yeah, so Marekka was supposed to be down here next week. We were going to do some forging together.
00:30:07
Speaker
um When I was there in April, um taking a class from him, we had discussed gradients, which is a technique he's been playing with probably for a couple of years now, um but really has started doing it, and I think in the last year and a half has really pushed it.
00:30:28
Speaker
And so he was going to come down.
00:30:33
Speaker
and if you've listened to Knife Talk, especially the September 23rd, there was a little issue where someone, and I'm not, he didn't name it, I'm not going to name it, but um someone had done a video on gradients um without Marekko's permission.
00:30:57
Speaker
And it really pissed him off. ah And you, if you listen to knife talk, you know that it really pissed him off because he talked about it for going on an hour. Um, and he, he really, you know, so after I was down there in April, okay, before I left, I said, Mariko, is there anything you don't want me to talk about? You don't want me to put in a video. Now's your chance. Please tell me now if there's anything you don't want me to video.
00:31:28
Speaker
And he said, no, no. And then three days later, he called me and I said this in the podcast. He said, yeah, I think I think the gradient thing. he wanted He wanted to be part of for releasing that. He didn't want me to release it, even though, of course, I would have given him credit.
00:31:43
Speaker
um But he said, hey, why don't I come down and we'll make the video together and blah, blah, blah. So this was supposed to be that time. um and then two weeks ago, somebody did video on gradients showing Mareko's pattern guide on the screen.
00:32:06
Speaker
Which is like Mareko's IP. Like he he, you know, his Patreon members have access those pattern guides. His students get those pattern guides.
00:32:17
Speaker
Throwing it up there for free was not cool. So anyway, he was pissed off about it getting released without him releasing it, you know.
00:32:30
Speaker
Crediting, and yes, he did credit Marekko, but, um, just something about doing a video and sharing someone else's intellectual property. Um, you know, it's just not, not without their permission.
00:32:46
Speaker
So he should have reached out to Marekko and asked him and Marekko probably would have said, Hey, why don't exactly what he told me, why don't we do, a you know, why don't we get together and do it together? Um, You know, when similar, I'll use my own similar thing. When I did the Viking sword, I wanted to use the Niels Vandenberg's Knots and Crosses Damascus pattern, which I purchased.
00:33:14
Speaker
I purchased that pattern guide even before I asked him. I purchased it from Niels' website. i I still reached out to Niels and asked him if I could show that pattern in, I didn't show his pattern guide, but I did the pattern in a video.
00:33:30
Speaker
um I don't even think this person purchased the pattern from Mareko because I don't think he sells those patterns. Anyway, long story short, I was affected by this because I'm pretty sure that's part of the reason why Mareko decided not to come down because I think he, you know, the cat's out of the bag.
00:33:48
Speaker
um So that was shitty. um You know, and and some people will say, hey, what why don't you just patent it? I've heard people say, you should have just patent it.
00:34:01
Speaker
It's ridiculous to try to patent something like like a Damascus pattern. Because one tiny little change and it's different.
00:34:13
Speaker
it's It's just silly. And the cost of... People don't realize what it costs to do a patent. And unless you have... Patents are for different... like
00:34:24
Speaker
Suing somebody in court, that's what a patent's for, right? And unless you've got deep pockets and lawyers, a patent's not going to, you're going to spend more money doing the patent than you're ever going to get from it.
00:34:37
Speaker
Right. So anyway, um but Marekko did say he did give me his blessing to go ahead with this video. And I've decided i want to have a video conference with Marekko and have him, his head in the corner of the video and talk about the different things that we're doing, go over it.
Intellectual Property in Knife-Making
00:35:00
Speaker
I think there was... You know, we've seen people do um the gradient and i you guys will in a couple of weeks, won't be this week, probably be next week's Triple T. We'll talk about it again in next week's podcast. But people have used the gradient in certain patterns.
00:35:22
Speaker
OK, what I think everyone is missing is its application to every Damascus pattern and its widespread usability.
00:35:37
Speaker
And I think it's going to, and I told Mareko when I was there, I think this is going to revolutionize Damascus patterns. I still believe that.
00:35:49
Speaker
i I'm doing a pattern today, which is ah pattern... We all know, but I'm going to do it with gradients and that's what I've been working on.
00:36:01
Speaker
And just to show how different that pattern can be with gradients. And that's part of what I want to finish before I get that triple T out there. And of course I'll do a full video on the knife that i'm going to make with this pattern.
00:36:15
Speaker
And I'm actually doing two different, the mosaic that I've done actually is one that I started back in April, but wouldn't couldn't I didn't want to release it because Morocco said you know he didn't want me to release a video showing gradients, so I videoed it, but I never didn't want to release it. So it's going to be part of this this video next week as well.
00:36:37
Speaker
I'll show that, an application of gradients. So I think it's really cool stuff. I think if you're into Damascus, you definitely want to watch that video um and check it check out what it's all about.
00:36:52
Speaker
Yes, we've seen, yeah especially Gabe from Anchorage Forge, do a whole ton of stuff on with gradients. He's really taken that run with it. He got Best Damascus at Blade Show this year with that pattern, or with a a version of a gradient pattern.
00:37:14
Speaker
so Yeah, just kind of yeah that that's just an example of how it kind of sets the patterns apart from... what we would now consider traditional. Yeah. um Yeah. I mean, I finally listened to the, ah to that episode today and I'll tell you what, man, you know, I go back and forth on like, you know, what kind of, yeah, i don't know how to say it. It's like, I don't want to participate in a bunch of drama and and shit that goes on in our community. Right. That's, that's really near,
00:37:49
Speaker
near and dear to my heart is like, I don't want to be part of, you know, that, those kinds of things. However, there are certain things that, you know, it, we all lose out if we don't discuss. Right. And, and at least have a healthy conversation about it And this happens to be one of those things to me where, um, the feeling that I had through it all is listening to it. It was just, i was bummed.
00:38:10
Speaker
Like, cause There's people that are very inspirational to our community. Right. And then there's, there's a bunch of those people that I don't know. Like I said, like I don't talk shit about anybody.
00:38:22
Speaker
Right. But I do want to say that there's, there's for me personally, there are people that are influential, inspiring, and I have had the opportunity and and great pleasure to to meet them and know them and to befriend them.
00:38:37
Speaker
And, um you know, when something unfortunate like this happens to where, you know, and and I'm a, I'm a, I'm a feelings guy, right. I I'm, I'm in recovery. I don't have any problem talking about feelings and all that good stuff.
00:38:53
Speaker
But when you could just hear the genuine, like, you know, you say angry, pissed, you know, and I, I feel, I see hurt, you know, like bummed, um you know, it's like a sense of betrayal of, ah you know, of of decency and in ah in ah in how people, how we react to people on a human human basis.
00:39:11
Speaker
And, you know, with my experience through through the things that I've gone through, i've I've leaned on the fact that there's nothing more sad to me than when someone is put in a position where they lose their faith in like the greater good of, of us as a, as a, as a, as a people, you know what Like, I don't mean to be all super philosophical or cause that's not what I'm trying to get at. But what I'm saying is that, you know, I like to believe that people are inherently better than we see in the public and news and media and social, you know what i mean? Like I have, I have interactions with people that are just incredible on many levels. Right. And then when something like,
00:39:52
Speaker
this happens, you know, it's it saddens me. um and And I think that's the more unfortunate thing because you have somebody that has done a lot, um you know, for the community, continues to do innovative, you know, creating, coming up with new things.
00:40:07
Speaker
And now they're going to be a little more reclusive about, you know, sharing those things there or, you know, out fear of, you know, and we all lose when that stuff happens, right? um And that's the thing that is, like I said, is is sad to me. But you know one thing I try to do on, on, on, I fail at this more times than I don't, but um you know, like every time we deal with somebody um they're doing the very best that they can.
00:40:35
Speaker
That is the best they have to offer the world in that moment. Right. It may be shitty. They may just be absolute pieces of shit, but that that's the best thing that they have right now. Right. So it's not for me to, to, to put the judgment on them or to to shame them or, you know, to to beat them down, but you know,
00:40:51
Speaker
it doesn't give anybody the excuse or the, uh, the, uh, the, the, the, the past to, to act like, you know, uh, to be so aloof that you, you don't do the, the basic minimum of, you know, treating people with respect. And especially when it's somebody else's, you know, deal.
00:41:10
Speaker
And I, the whole time I'm listening to it, the whole thing I was just trying to, I'm trying to find like, well, you know, did, is this intentional? And I don't think he had even I don't, and I know this person and I don't think it was malicious.
00:41:24
Speaker
i know I don't think it was, he didn't have any bad intentions. Nope. I think he just didn't think he doesn't have the foresight of the implications and the and the wherewithal of how this would affect, you know, certain individuals. The one thing that stood out with me, it was like, you know, there's, there's people that have paid money to take classes to learn that.
00:41:42
Speaker
There's the, you know, there there's, that's his, you know, livelihood to how he provides, you know, for himself and, you know, like, and I just don't think any of that came into into consideration when that happened. So, you know, again, i think it's just, it it saddens me more than anything. I think it's a bummer. um And I...
00:42:00
Speaker
i I'm very excited to, I don't think I'm not going to watch that video. Uh, that's what I decided. and And I'll wait to, to see, uh, what you guys come out with. And and I'm excited to to see that, but, um, that video, you meaning the, the offended, whatever were talking in mind, right. You better watch. I'm yeah, I'm looking forward to that one.
00:42:22
Speaker
Cause I want to hear, you know, you know, I, I think you two people that I, I, uh, I'm very honored to know and have and and help me in, in along my journey, collaborate and do something really cool. i'm i'm excited to do that. So right to to learn about that, I think other people will share the same, same thing. So and I think my golden rule here, I don't know what you want to call it. My recommendation is like one, one thing is that if, if I take a class and I learned something,
00:42:55
Speaker
that's That's my information. Like, I paid for that information. Sure. But that doesn't give me... i think of, like, music. Like, that doesn't give me the right to
00:43:08
Speaker
publicize that for profit. like And essentially putting a YouTube video and putting that in in a YouTube video, it's something I'm, you know, you profit from it, from YouTube.
00:43:20
Speaker
Use that as your golden rule, right? Yes, you can use that information, but you sharing it to the public for your own gain is now you're crossing the line.
00:43:32
Speaker
So that's my recommendation to folks is think about it, use the information, you know, use things that you get or you pay for, but that doesn't mean that you get to share it.
00:43:43
Speaker
Sure. Right. And, and, and, and just to to say it here, you know, i mean, we're all fucking thieves in some way or another, right? I mean, there's no, no, no, like, i I just want to put that out there. There's a't no, like I said, I'm not, I definitely want this To be, no, there's no, I'm not, there's not no attempt to shame or, you know, shaking fingers at anybody. I'm just saying this in a fortunate situation.
00:44:03
Speaker
Um, and fully understanding that, you know, I I'll look at something and I'll like, you know, as creative as I want to believe that I am there, there's, there's a,
00:44:16
Speaker
There's a ah copycat in all of us in some manner, right? so Absolutely. you know the the you There's no way we're sitting here trying to say, you know like be 100% original and don't do that. Fuck all that. yeah yeah you know But ah if credit's due and, like I said, and if it affects somebody else's whole deal, then just maybe have some awareness of that.
00:44:35
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, when it's someone's obvious intellectual property, even if you've paid for it, sure just be careful it. That's all I'm saying.
00:44:47
Speaker
But i am very excited about this pattern. Hopefully i don't fuck it up. um And hope you do um i'm I'm excited to see what it's going to look like. And I really want to.
00:45:05
Speaker
i think no one has done these describing gradients. They haven't given it justice. They haven't given it the expanse that it could have.
00:45:17
Speaker
So that's why I'm very like, this is like a, I haven't been jazzed about a Damascus pattern in a long time. no I remember when you came back, you were like, dude, like this is going to be, this is crazy. My mind is spinning with ideas and, and you know, like inspiration and stuff.
00:45:34
Speaker
And that's the cool thing about too, is people that have that ability to, to come up with that kind of stuff, you know, Lightning does come in a bottle once or twice for some people, but you know, there's a definite, uh, there'll be more and you know, something, somebody is going to do it, you know, change it again, you know, and, and but those are the the special individuals. So, yeah, I was actually, one one of the, one of the reasons that I was excited about the mosaic, it didn't quite turn out the way I wanted.
00:46:04
Speaker
um, I was, you know, sometimes you have these happy accidents. Do you remember the plug welded knives that I did?
00:46:15
Speaker
Those chef knives. And i got that pattern to like spiral. Yep. There was like a, I won't say twist cause don't want to confuse people with a twist, but the pattern itself spiraled, swirled.
00:46:34
Speaker
I was trying to replicate that. And, uh, cause I wanted an explosion, There's a all of this gradient stuff and everything that to me is culminating to ah pattern, an idea that I have that I discuss with Mareko. I want to be able to get to that pattern and I'm not ready to discuss it, but it involves one aspect of it, which is that swirl.
00:47:02
Speaker
nice And it's a really hard effect to get, and to make happen. Intention. So I'm still playing with it. When I master it, you may see. You can't say playing with it and master right off the, get out of here, dude.
00:47:21
Speaker
Come on, is a freak family show here, dude. Yeah. Go play with it somewhere else. Yeah. But we'll see. i'm I'm still still working on it.
00:47:34
Speaker
But tune in next week for Triple T, and hopefully if I can corner Marekko this week to get him to record that that video call, I'll have that ready for next week.
00:47:46
Speaker
Nice. um Did you watch the belt, the abrasive belt video from last week? Of course you didn't.
00:47:58
Speaker
What was my face there? You forgot. No, I didn't. Got a lot of good feedback on that one. That's good. That's good. I do appreciate the ah the acknowledgement of my very realistic good shit talking.
00:48:17
Speaker
Because if you did see that video, that's 100% true. But I have been... an amazement many times of this guy only having like two, two grits and using them for everything he's ever, everything he's ever made has really come from a 36 and a one 20, except for when he sharpens a knife, he ventured out into some weird thing. but I did. I did call that out in the video. I saw it.
00:48:40
Speaker
I kind of sped watch it here get today, but yeah, I'm going to give it ah another world. The one thing I, I think I, I know you've told me,
00:48:51
Speaker
I've heard other people say i what One thing I don't do, though, is the the flipping the belt when you're cutting the bevels. um I have do that. I do it if it's not a brand new belt.
00:49:07
Speaker
ah And even actually, even on brand new, what I'll do is I'll look at the belt. Because I've had belts where one side is visibly... like different than the other if they don't look different and they're both look very like it depends sometimes they're not cut perfectly you know what i mean um so i'll actually look at a belt and if it looks fine then i'll just use it but i have seen it where they're not the same and those are the ones that i'll flip over yeah when i'm doing the uh doing the plunges yeah a lot of people liked that tip i know um who does that i think nick tobin yep
00:49:47
Speaker
I know Brent's talked about it before. That was something that he picked up in somebody's talk. but Yeah. Yeah. I heard that one a long time ago. And I do it on occasion when i when I need to, but I do look at it.
00:50:00
Speaker
um Sharpening the, being able to sharpen the engineered abrasives is a really cool, if you're not familiar with that. get yourself um a diamond sharpening stone and just press it up against the belt to sharpen the belt.
00:50:17
Speaker
um Gator belts, the Norton Norax belts, any of those engineered abrasives, you can actually just resharpen. I've never heard them called engineered. i think i I was referred to them as structured. but Structured engineered. Same thing, yeah. Yeah, same thing.
00:50:34
Speaker
um Yeah, that's why I like those. and they they just i I find the gator belts don't last quite as long. It seems like it's weird. It seems like the gator ones... Who makes gator?
00:50:49
Speaker
3M? 3M. 3M. It's like they have thicker abrasives, but they don't last as long. way Maybe they're just meant to grind to go through a little more. but i don't know. Every time I've ever chewed them up with that that stone, they've They cut again.
00:51:05
Speaker
maybe but yeah No, no, i'm I'm not saying that they cut again. I just mean, i find that the Norax ones last longer, even though the abrasives look like they don't look as thick. That has a stiffer back though, right?
00:51:17
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Anyway, I'm not trying to force the Norton belts down people's throats, but I like the Norton into the
Knife Supply Recommendations
00:51:26
Speaker
Norax ones. Yeah.
00:51:28
Speaker
But the gator ones, it same thing, but both of them you can sharpen with a diamond stone. So definitely do that. Yeah. It's a good little trick. Yeah. And with such a good ah ah triple T this week on abrasives, where would you go to get abrasives i get all my abrasives at maritime knife supply hey me too yeah because if you buy 10 you get one free yep even though i get them free anyway but yeah shut up nobody wants to fucking hear about that um no but seriously get
00:52:00
Speaker
My favorite, I don't mean to be Lawrence, I'm sorry, but I got to call this guy out. Use them like they're free. The old adages, even though they fucking are for me, just use them like they're free. You people that have to buy them, like, you know, use your hard earned money to just, and then just use them for 20 seconds and throw em away.
00:52:18
Speaker
I laughed. and I literally had a belly laugh. I'm like, this guy, get out of here.
00:52:25
Speaker
They're not free. they're They're still paid for, it but in other ways. Yes, that's true. Yeah, go talk to Lawrence at Maritime Knife Supply. He will hook you up. He has all the abrasives, not just the Norton ones, all the abrasives, VSM, and...
00:52:44
Speaker
Combat. I think he's got 3M. All of the abrasive. All the abrasives. So go get yourself some abrasives and any other tools that you need for knife making.
00:52:58
Speaker
In fact, I reached out. I had a dilemma. I had a piece of steel that, know so normally like he writes the type of steel on one end of the bar. So it was like, i don't know, a 36, 48 inch bar.
00:53:13
Speaker
And normally I always cut the steel from the end that doesn't have the writing on it so that by the time I get to one end, I still have the writing and i know what steel it was. I guess I did something dumb and I used the end that had the writing on it and I picked up a piece of steel and had no fucking clue what kind of steel it was.
00:53:33
Speaker
And i looked at the end and it was painted gold. I'm like, okay, I don't think I did that. So i emailed a picture to Lawrence and I said, please tell me, you know, what kind of steel this is. And it had a little line in green and a line in gold on the side of the bar.
00:53:53
Speaker
And like a minute later, he since but he goes, oh yeah, that's CPM 154. I'm like, thank God. but Because it was like 36 inch piece by then. And that's like an expensive piece of steel.
00:54:07
Speaker
It would have sucked to not know what it was. And it was when Jared and Brent came for the folder course. That was the piece that I used for their folder blades. So Lawrence knows it all. He's got he's organized.
00:54:21
Speaker
give him some love and uh go shop at maritime knife supply absolutely thanks Lawrence you saved my butt there nice and when you're cutting in the plunges what do you use oh of course I'm using my Ameribram like I had to think like what sponsor mean yeah I'm using my Ameribrain Fastback 2x72 with that amazing drop-away platen, which I love.
00:54:51
Speaker
um And I get i get to say, I love that thing so much. I never, I'm lazy, okay? I'm I'll admit um i never i'm lazy okay i'm lazy i ma i'll admit it I don't like i if anything involves me doing a lot of work, I'm not going to do it. So I never used to use a slack belt because I was too lazy to change the platen or, you know, take something off.
00:55:18
Speaker
But now with the drop away platen, it's the flick of a. switch the plantin drops away and you have a slack belt it's awesome that is the one of the best features they have so yeah it is the cat's ass it is the the mutts nuts you name it any pet part you want um but get yourself a fastback two by 72 best grinders on the market while you while you're at it go look at the hyper disc the rotary tool extraordinaire from uh from ameribraid uh mr jared has one and loves it uses it all the time when he actually gets in the shop
00:56:04
Speaker
It's been a lot lately. That thing's been turned on more than the grinder has in the past three weeks for sure. Oh yeah. Cause you're in the finishing process.
00:56:15
Speaker
Someone, someone told me about, um, and I think you've mentioned this to me before, but using one of those, one of those discs with, um, um, compound on it.
00:56:28
Speaker
You have one of those, right? One of those discs, like it's like a, ah filthy disc for the, uh, for the hyper disc. And then you put compound on it. Like, I haven't done that.
00:56:40
Speaker
I haven't done anything. I do have a bunch of abrasive, big abrasive wheels that I put on. That's what I just used to, to, to finish up the, the handle fronts. Yeah. Someone, someone was talking Maybe it was in the comments on this belt video about, um,

getting one of those, um, belts that you can like almost like grind and like into a V and then you can, put use compound. And as opposed to using a cork belt, they were talking about using one of those. Oh, I can see that.
00:57:11
Speaker
To, uh, like being able to get in, this like, i have a hell of a time sometimes getting, um places in guards that I want to, um, you know, shine up or, you know, get scratches out, things like that. So that, that, or you don't want to hold it to the, to the full steam buffer and having that variable speed is is key to it. And sometimes I want something a little rougher than just a buffer.
00:57:38
Speaker
Like I'm not actually trying to take scratches out, not, um, so yeah, like to get me, so get me one of those. Yeah. I agree. Yeah.
00:57:51
Speaker
But, um yeah, so anyway, back to forging.

01:00:15
Speaker

01:00:29
Speaker
And the way the guy, he he said, it you say it and he's just put the word composites, not composites. I'm like, you didn't pronounce it phonetically. have no idea the way you're trying to say it.
01:00:44
Speaker
it was pretty funny i don't know what comment you're talking about i this was probably a no i saw that yeah it was on uh no somebody literally told me this they they he must put the same comment i don't know it may be i don't it could be but maybe it was two different people don't could be yeah i saw someone with a bunch of people yeah i said wait till you hear him say templates or or some other wacky thing you you guys say but anyways uh yeah grip tech composites uh grip x uh those go great on all ah knives but um the uh chef knife and anything you're gonna get wet get it nice and grippy and you need to hold on to it so and you can use the discount code have not cornered the market on uh the english language by any means so don't even start with me

01:03:25
Speaker
Who you got? This week, I actually had to look because I thought for sure we had done this one, but it turns out we haven't. um This week, I have Nico Forge.
01:03:35
Speaker
N-I-K-O dot Forge. And he opened this here. Not edit. Damn it.
01:03:46
Speaker
My fingers aren't working and I'm not prepared, apparently. um This is Nico...
01:03:54
Speaker
cherish I'm not even going to try your last name. Sorry, dude. Yeah, yeah we butchered that. Yeah. Sorry, Nico.
01:04:06
Speaker
Yeah, that's easy. Yeah. um Who hasn't mastered any languages? There you go. Anyways, go ahead. um So i' actually, the the part that that caught me on his profile, yes, he's got cool knives, brilliant.
01:04:22
Speaker
The axes, the like the engraving work on the axes is amazing. I love these these these stuffed animal things.
01:04:33
Speaker
The leather, that's what got me. I was like, oh, those are cool. um I thought those were those were awesome. Those little leather teddy bears. Did you see you see those on his profile? I do.
01:04:45
Speaker
Yeah. They're very Deadpool-ish. Yeah, I'm down a ways here. But yeah, this dude does some really cool stuff. I am not following this guy. So I am going to go do that right now. Yeah, those...
01:04:59
Speaker
And I'll be i'll be honest. i I'm pretty sure I've seen some of these pictures before because i got a feeling these some of your pictures are stolen because these are the kind of pictures that I see on like...
01:05:15
Speaker
like importers overseas scam knife makers um they always have pictures of like these kind of axes with these kind of engravings on them for sure right for sure yeah um so i had to do a double take yeah right i had to do a double take i'm like wait is this a real profile because i see the and i'm like yes this is this is the guy so uh i'm i'm sure they're They're probably stealing some of your images, but amazing work. I love the engraving work on the axes.
01:05:48
Speaker
Just yeah super cool. Yeah, really creative stuff. yeah I dig this. That's good one. And i'm I'm really loving those those teddy bears. I don't know what else to call them.
01:05:59
Speaker
he on his i I have not and installed threads, so I kind of refuse. But um he he goes into it a little bit on his threads profile, but I couldn't click into it because I don't have a threads account.
01:06:11
Speaker
But yeah, cool stuff. So go check him out. Go check out Nico over at Nico.Forge. Right now he's got just over 5,000 followers. So go pump that up even more.
01:06:23
Speaker
I just did. Good one. So I have... Uh, Brandon park at BP underscore custom underscore knives. Um, I've been following this guy for a, since I started, he was kind of in that, uh, TPK, um, EDC fixed blade, um, thing when I, when I was first getting going and I've always liked this stuff. I think he was actually the winner of the first, um,
01:07:00
Speaker
I don't know if it's the first, but of the the Gentry build along that was a few years ago. yeah I remember his. The scalpel one? Yeah, the scalpel. Yep. um And I think he, I'm pretty sure he won that one.
01:07:13
Speaker
um He just did a really, really cool take on um that piece. But yeah, this guy puts out a lot of really cool stuff, really clean ah EDC stuff. Finish on the handles is always really cool.
01:07:27
Speaker
And like I said, I've been following him for a while. I really like what he does. And he's got, he's blowing up since we started here. 9,138 followers.
01:07:39
Speaker
um He's out of Kentucky. I thought he was actually out of here in California. But anyway, yeah, a good follow. Really cool stuff. if If that's your jam, BP underscore custom underscore knives.
01:07:57
Speaker
I really like, um I've seen it on a a bunch of knives now. The, I'll call it the reverse clip. Like instead of the clip having a concave, it actually is curved the other way. And I think Brent has done one of those, but I'm really digging it. There's one that's on the Warren cliff style. You're saying,
01:08:21
Speaker
That's the style. Yeah. Um, yeah I'm like way down on his profile. The one I'm looking at. Oh, the, actually the one, the upper left one, I think is got it. Um, yeah, really cool. I like that.
01:08:33
Speaker
I like the clip on that. Like the, sorry, the false edge, not the clip, the false edge on us, what I meant. Yeah. It's cool. Yeah. Really cool stuff. Um, really clean.
01:08:43
Speaker
Like it's just, it's good, good work. So, um, yeah, that's, that's who I got. Um, that's a good one. This week. So yeah, go ah check out Nico.Forge and bpy BP underscore custom underscore knives. Give them a follow.
01:08:58
Speaker
Tell them the boys at Triple T said what's up. Nice. and So let's do this this listener question. Why don't you intro it since came out?
Advice for New Knife-Makers
01:09:12
Speaker
Yeah, so I had a ah guy reach out to to the to the show, and um I don't think he's – I think he's like a newer – Wanting to get into knife making, a name is Josh, I don't have the the profile in front of me, but ah it says that he wanted to know what are some steps to getting into selling or finding your own niche.
01:09:36
Speaker
For me as a full-time woodworker, I really enjoy making wood handle scales and stabilizing, but I see that that market is pretty saturated with other makers and kind of made me rethink the possibility of starting my own page, even just as a hobby or part-time.
01:09:50
Speaker
So it's kind of, uh, I think a question that we have all come up against, uh, while we're considering starting, um, making.
01:10:01
Speaker
and it's like the, the first part of his question I want to, uh, answer first. And it says, are you guys open to suggestions on topics as a beginner stock removal knife maker?
01:10:13
Speaker
Absolutely. ah haror We're always dying for questions. So, um, yeah of course we, we beginner stock removal, any kind of beginner question. Yeah. I mean, that's, I mean, yeah.
01:10:26
Speaker
And I think in, in Josh, but what we're trying to say is that, you know, all of us come up against that. That's the, the, deep the first thing we're doing, you know, like, is this worth it? Like, I mean, for a lot of us, is ah is it is worth the investment of of the things that we need to to start doing this?
01:10:42
Speaker
Is there an opportunity to have a return on investment and to start going? um The, you know, what what, when I was reading it and he's, this question has kind of been lingering around for a while. And I told him I was just hadn't got around ah to remembering to bring it up because I'm a loser that way. But the ah thing that stands out to me is, you know, I don't know if there's any steps, right?
01:11:07
Speaker
I think for me personally, it's just just to do you know, just whether you want to, like you're, you're, you have ambitions on, you know, becoming, making this a business or or keeping it a hobby.
01:11:23
Speaker
But I say yeah kill the questions of if, and, and just, just go after it and see, see where you land. um yeah You know, there's a, there's a huge amount of resources, an amazing community full of really, really awesome people that want to help and encourage and grow, ah grow the craft and, and, and,
01:11:42
Speaker
how many areas this thing touches, you know, from, from leather to wood to, to knife making to like, it just, it, you know, you cover so many, realms and, and, in the idea. So, um, you know, yeah I don't know if there is a set, you know, process that we all start with, but it's just kill the question and just, and just do it.
01:12:04
Speaker
Yeah. I see this. I see there's two parts to this. First thing is it doesn't matter how saturated it is. If it's something you enjoy doing, then just do it. Like if you love it and you love doing it, um, and it's,
01:12:21
Speaker
yeah the the The money will come and you can figure out how to monetize it, then just get into it. The second part is if there's, and i'm I'm reading, I just want to know what are some of the steps to getting into selling.
01:12:37
Speaker
So specifically for stabilized wood, I think this is one of those things where pictures, pictures, pictures, you need to get pictures of your work, of your your, your materials out there. So you gotta to be a beast on social media is what I think.
01:12:58
Speaker
And I'll use some examples like, um, there's a profile called ironwood man that he does a whole, like he just spews, like I wouldn't say spews as a bad thing, but just pushes out images of his, um, stabilized work.
01:13:15
Speaker
I think that's what you got to do. I think that's the big thing is just get it in front of makers. Like, get connected with as many makers as you can and get the pictures out there of hey this is what i've got this is what i've got this is what i got this week and that's what i would suggest you do and my uh my other step would be get yourself a website don't i personally i am gun shy now about doing things over ig So if the guy doesn't have a website, I'm very leery because I've had friends get screwed on IG. It's just there's so many scams now.
01:13:56
Speaker
I get a little leery. So I wouldn't have a website or even an Etsy page or someplace you can send people that is a legitimate thing um beyond IG and someone sending you money.
01:14:08
Speaker
And some people will do that, but a lot of people will shy away from it now, I think. But that that's, I mean, do it. Like Jared said, get over the question and just do it.
01:14:20
Speaker
Get started. And then for this specifically about the stabilized wood, I think you just got ah you know, it's all about the images. It's all about showing people how cool it looks.
01:14:33
Speaker
Because that we're we're we're buying this stuff of because of the way it looks. Yeah. So that's what you got to get out there.
01:14:45
Speaker
And we got friends like in the like Ryan, Coakley. got friends that do this and have been successful at doing it. um having Having a good, um you know, getting linked up with a lot of makers is, of course, helpful.
01:15:02
Speaker
So what that's got to be on your on your list too. And then eventually maybe you go to shows, maybe, you know, you go to blade show or something like that, but I wouldn't do that right out of the gate.
01:15:14
Speaker
You need a lot of stock for that. ah lie It's, it's costly. So I would, I would start small time and do some batches and and get things going.
01:15:27
Speaker
Agreed. Yeah. I mean, I don't, I don't have the kind of forethought in planning for stabilization. Like, the these if you talk to guys that are really into stabilizing like they've had wood in their shop drying for like oh yeah i've had this for like two years i've had that sitting over there for like a year i've had that for two three years and they have all this stuff that they just sit around their shop that would drive me crazy i could never be that organized yeah me neither yeah i i just don't get i don't have a the the
01:16:03
Speaker
it's like for leather, you know what mean? There's, there's so many rabbit holes for these, these different parts of, of what we're doing. So Josh, I think, you know, for guys like Dennis and I, we, we probably need another dude to dive into that rabbit hole for us. so ah Better you than me, buddy. i' I'm, I'm your customer. Show me some. There you go.
01:16:23
Speaker
Yeah. But get out there, man. I just, just, again, man, it's just all about the encouragement just, just, just getting after it and trying, you know, um, see what whatever happens. i and and the good out The good thing about the stabilized market, it doesn't matter how like you know how much product you have. like ah if there's I will buy wood from whole bunch of guys. like Every time I see if someone is online that I know is a reputable source and has a nice piece of wood that I like that I want to put on I'll buy it like it. It doesn't matter if it's
01:17:02
Speaker
Kieran's Koa, if it's high Koa, if it's you name it, Rob's Wildwood, you name it. I've bought wood from a whole ton of people.
01:17:13
Speaker
But you know what? I wouldn't, you know, if I made my own, that's kind of, that's kind of the thing. I mean, it says he's, you know, starting to to do beginning stock removal knives, you know, thatd that'd be awesome to never have to to do that. You supply yourself too on top of that.
01:17:29
Speaker
If anything, that's a win right there. Yeah. I would still, I'm i'm a hound. i would still buy whole ton of it, even if I made it myself. Yeah. i I have a problem. We have a problem. Yeah. Yes.
01:17:45
Speaker
I don't know any maker that doesn't right sit in shame when they look at their material. It's either a pride or shame. it's Yeah. My precious. Yes, yes.
01:17:59
Speaker
That's what it is. yeah And sometimes I get annoyed if it's like, if I only have one piece of like a really nice piece of wood, i get annoyed that I have to use it. Yeah.
01:18:11
Speaker
Yeah. I agree. You know what i don't get annoyed at using? i I can take a guess. My even heat kiln. Yeah. My kiln.
01:18:25
Speaker
um Love that machine. it is one that never fails me. So if you guys need... a top quality kiln to move your heat treating from mysticism into science.
01:18:39
Speaker
You need to get yourself an even heat kiln. ah Family owned and operated since 1948, building the highest quality heat treat ovens available.
01:18:50
Speaker
I've got the LB 18. My friend Jared here has the step up to the 20. What do you have a 22 and a half? The k the k o KO. The KO 22 and a half. That's right. Yeah. Yeah. It's got to be a few more inches bigger. That's right. Longer.

01:20:11
Speaker
I'm out here. I'm out here.
01:20:31
Speaker
And that's a wrap.
