Introduction and Initial Reactions

Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, it it doesn't that just put the tin hat on it on this weekend? None of my bloody buttons on my computer are working when I'm clicking on them. They're giving me a five-second time delay, which is a little bit like the way Newcastle's football brains were working yesterday. Not that I want to try and show my hand as to how I thought Toon performed in Crystal Palace 1, Newcastle United 1. That's what we're here to review. I'm joined by my two lovely black and white buddies, Mr. Kevin Esther.
00:00:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hi, Kev.
00:00:41
Kev
You alright Ian? I was at an interesting start for my listeners at one but I mean, you're right, it does kind of sum up how the weekends went.
00:00:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
And also, the lovely ginger ninja herself, Joanne is. How are you, Joanne?
00:00:55
Jo
Hi, I'm good, I'm good. I'm looking forward to this one, I'll be honest. Yeah, let's go.
00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I haven't been drinking. It might sound, in comparison to my other podcasts, as if I have, but I haven't, I promise. Right. Yesterday. Newcastle went down to try and right the wrongs of a very, very disappointing home performance against West Ham against another their struggling London side. Probably picked the best possible team that he could pick. Always fed Botman out injured. I'm not sure there's anybody else out injured who would have would have got ahead of anyone in that team and. Played a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.
00:01:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
That sounds like it might have been a ah ah tough battle and grit was shown and that we got a good point away from home. However, Crystal Palace had 16 shots. Newcastle didn't register a single shot. Apparently there's one in the stats, which was a blocked shot, but I can't remember seeing it. I know that we scored our goal by virtue of the Crystal Palace centre-half, Mark Gahey. It was a nice move. It was the only inspired five seconds out of the whole hour and a half in my view.
00:02:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
But look, I've probably made my feelings rather clear there and I don't want to just go on and steal the whole of this first part. Joanne,

Critique and Optimism: Offensive vs. Defensive Perspectives

00:02:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
how did you think that the match went?
00:02:18
Jo
god you I was kind of hoping you would start with Kev. I was old waiting for his kind of impassioned, more positive slant on it.
00:02:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know. well i was i'm concerned i'm concerned if i start with ke I'm concerned if I start with Kev that we might be through to the end of the podcast before you get a chance to speak.
00:02:28
Jo
But yeah, it's alright. I'll speak.
00:02:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I've started with you, John.
00:02:38
Jo
I'll see my little two pennies worth and he can go on his, yeah, it's fine.
00:02:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let us know. Why don't you?
00:02:43
Jo
yeah, exactly what you've just said about the goal. It was beautifully worked. It was straight from the training ground and I've watched it back a few times and it was lovely at to see. And I did joke at the time that Gehi was just, you know, trying to get off the mark for his potential future club.
00:02:58
Jo
However, Like you said, that kind of did become the only real positive and jokey kind of time. did defend well. We can't deny that. I think Danburn being back in defense, which we're expecting him to be, was a pillar of strength. Pope pulled off a few great saves as well. and But if I'm honest, that's where the kind of ah fear then comes in as well, the fact that they had to do that and the fact that we could have lost by so many. And I know we didn't because of the defense.
00:03:26
Jo
But if I'm honest, I don't even want to talk about what they could have done. My concern is our lack of going forward was horrific, to put it lightly. And like you said, it was one blocked shot, which I don't remember either. So who even had that shot? I'm not sure.
00:03:41
Jo
So to me nothing much changed from West Ham in that sense apart from the defensive display Brilliant, but nothing going forward and that needs to be looked upon. I don't It can be fixed. I will always believe in it can be fixed and I believe how it can do it However, it needs to happen soon because it's almost like the players they almost look like they're lacking confidence is the best way I can describe it this is me just trying to be put my relatively sensible hat on and not just be feel blown angry at them which at times i felt but i don't know what's wrong with them at the minute but there's something very wrong going forward and there needs to be a fix put in place and that if i'm honest is probably all i've got to say i'd rather kev just go on his tangent now
00:04:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kevin, you've got a tangent to go on. How did you think the game went, mate?
00:04:30
Kev
I'm not as doom and gloom as 99% of a fan base, which is not a shock. is it? Michael calls me a happy cuppa. And I am. Look, don't get me wrong. Joe has made some fantastic points. We weren't great going forward. And I mean, that's an understatement, actually, that we weren't great going forward. We were hopeless going forward, really. But I still stand by, but we've actually went away to Crystal Palace. We've picked up a point. Yes, Palace aren't in a

Social Media's Role in Shaping Perceptions

00:04:55
Kev
good position, but we didn't play well. And there's no There's no right to play well in every single game in the Premier League. If the league this year doesn't tell you about when you look at Man City, I think seven games now without a win. You look at Villa haven't won since October 22nd. So there is no just divine right to go and play well in every game. And we didn't play well, but we still came with with a point. I thought actually we defended quite well, even though I know they did have some big chances and Moonos should have should have put that first one on away. I think most of us on this podcast would have finished that one. But
00:05:29
Kev
but didn't put it away. And you look at Newcastle vs West Ham if you want to combine that and we had some fantastic chances against West Ham. Isaac had two. Well, it had a really good chance. Gordon hit one at the goalkeeper ah and you could easily have said, well, actually, let's, let's work at the other way. Let's do what Newcastle fans are doing right now. Let's work. Well, if we scored all of them against West Ham, we would have won four to, but we didn't, we lost two now and that was a poop performance as well. But look, it's, it's not good. We still got a point. We didn't play well. And we've picked up a point. I thought it was a bit of great. I thought there was a bit of fight and I thought we did defend well.
00:06:01
Kev
not much over the same good in terms of a performance. And I think Joe has a point where I'm more angry at some of the players when I am Eddie Howe or management or whatever. Like I don't get why they are just all of a sudden, well, we'll rock up and, you know, that'll be enough. It's not enough. We need some fresh faces in and then we need to give the likes of Gordon Isaac, a hell of a scare in terms of, look, nobody's been given the club. If you stop performing, you can say goodbye to your big move. And you can also, we'll just get someone to replace you. So
00:06:28
Jo
if
00:06:29
Kev
Yeah, I am angry at the players. I am angry that we were poor were going forward, but I'm not doom and gloom in terms of it's a nightmare. We've got four good performances before the West Ham and Palace one, but everyone's forgot them already in typical Newcastle entitlement fashion.
00:06:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, Kevin, know I know you've got a point about entitlement and I know Eddie says in every press conference there's no easy

Questioning Eddie Howe's Analysis

00:06:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
games in the Premier League.
00:06:54
Kev
There isn't.
00:06:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's not. Some are easier than others.
00:06:57
Kev
Correct.
00:06:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would say a home game against struggling West Ham side who looked like a deer in the headlights when they started against Newcastle last Monday would be one of the easier games.
00:07:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if you had to pick a team to go and play away from home at the moment, Crystal Palace, with all of their semi-fit and injured players, would probably also be its only super-spursy Spurs that have lost to them this year.
00:07:24
Kev
Villa drew at home against Palace.
00:07:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:07:29
Kev
Tell me if I'm wrong with this, but Man City haven't won in seven, right? And there's no call for Pep because he's got enough in the bank. Unai Emery hasn't won since October 22nd in all competitions. And they drew at home the Palace, actually.
00:07:39
Jo
me
00:07:44
Kev
And there is no like level of anti-manager just stuff flying around on social media. The negative and unhinged stuff seems to be confined in Newcastle. It's very, very, very frustrating.
00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
now Well, I think Emery has got his, well, well're being really busy in the Champions League as well, card to play. And they should have beat Juventus last week, I think, should they not? They had a goal disallowed at the end.
00:08:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
and So that, yeah, I mean, if he's got to play his, I've got too many games, I've got a load of injuries. He's sounding a bit like Eddie Howe this time last year, isn't he?
00:08:15
Kev
Mm hmm.
00:08:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's why he's also got an extra year's worth of time on his side for the fans to forgive him to and to allow him to find a way through.
00:08:23
Jo
Yeah.
00:08:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's why Emory's not being picked on. I combine those two games. It's 166 minutes since Newcastle last conjured a shot on goal against West Ham and against Crystal Palace.
00:08:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
now I don't think I'm being over-entitled at hoping that players, and we've got at least three that we would value in at 100 million plus, and they will all play in on Saturday. I don't think we're being over-entitled to think that they somehow could could get to a point where someone someone could put their lasers through the ball and actually put a shot. It doesn't even have to be on target to count as a shot.
00:09:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
What the hell were they doing? What were they doing? I mean, AFC Wimbledon had three shots when they played at our place, and I don't think they got out of their own box.
00:09:18
Kev
I agree.
00:09:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know?
00:09:19
Kev
it's I agree. it's It is poor. it It is like, I cannot defend that performance going forward. I thought we weren't, we weren't very good at all going forward, but I just feel like there's a need of like, like just people being sensible.
00:09:34
Kev
Like the four games before that would be Chelsea and before the last two, who which have been poor. I agree. but Before that, we beat Chelsea and the Cup. We drew with Man City. We beat Arsenal and we beat Forest away from home. We had six shots on target away to Forest. And it's like we just take off for granted. Oh, we beat Forest three one away from home. We had six shots on target. We beat Arsenal one nil. We had something like seven or eight shots on target. Brilliant. That's never brought up because we're winning, which is great. But I'm telling you now, if we if Palace hadn't had scored in the last kick of the game,
00:10:07
Kev
the fan base would still be complaining about something even more 1-1 they'll have to play terribly away from home and still picking up three points we saw it at the start of the season when we didn't play well and picked up points I still weren't happy when we started playing well and not picking up points and we still weren't happy when we started playing well and picking up points and that's been forgotten about because of the last two games it is just so mind-bogglingly unbelievable that we expect as you catenated 14 years of just left to rot under my ashi era and apparently in three years of new owners and eddie howl we expect to just steamroll every game and put in a good performance it's not going to happen and it never will happen at least till another five six years another 400 million pound spend
00:10:45
Jo
yeah
00:10:46
Kev
We have to be patient. We have to be sensible.

Tactical Critiques and Player Accountability

00:10:48
Kev
Yes, I'm with you Ian. It was a horrendous performance against Palace. It wasn't good, but I still think we defended well. I'll stand by that. We did defend well, but it wasn't a good performance.
00:10:56
Jo
we did
00:10:57
Kev
I've always West Ham, but this is a Premier League. We can't just rock up and play whatever we gain. We were so close to picking up three points, and not playing well. I'm still quite popular.
00:11:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, Kev, I'm positive like you are as well for those reasons. But what my main issue is, you've been very honest, I think, in our assessment of our performance there. Really not very good going forward.
00:11:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Had to show grit and determination in defense. Dan Byrne played really well and demonstrated that if he'd been playing against West Ham, we may well have had no goals scored until we did manage to finally put one in the back of the net.
00:11:23
Kev
did yeah
00:11:24
Jo
Mm hmm.
00:11:28
Jo
Yeah.
00:11:30
Kev
Good point.
00:11:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
look However, Eddie Howe listed a number of observations on the game. I'm not sure he was watching the same game I was in his post-match conference, which I'm going to come back and put to you, Kev, in particular, and tell me how you think Eddie Howe was being honest with us as fans. first But I'm going to hear from Joanne, who's got a message from Zencaster.
00:12:00
Jo

00:12:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent. Thank you very much, Joanne. So yes, I was frustrated after yesterday's watching yesterday's game.
00:12:27
Jo
Thank you.
00:12:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, like I would have been loved it if we'd won 1-0. And I don't think we were like outplayed like a 16 shots to nil sort of game implies.
00:12:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it was 50-50 possession wise. And and we we were a wall. didn't think they were all over us. Yes, they had one or two chances that they probably should have taken, but they didn't. And so we were still holding them goalless right through to the last kick of the game, as Kevin said. hi What really infuriated me more was listening to Eddie's discussion of the game in his post-match press conference. Eddie said, we moved the ball well going forward.
00:13:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
He said a last-minute equalizer turned the game against us and that we deserved to win. Well, he's asked why we're not scoring anymore, because we've got 14 in 14 and we scored 85 last year. He said, why are we not scoring goals anymore, Eddie? He said, I don't know. We're doing the same things as we did last year.
00:13:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's the whole fucking point, isn't it? Teams know exactly how we're going to approach the game. They know exactly what to do. We've got to change it. Now, I know we couldn't change it by bringing two or three players in in the summer. His hands were tied on that, were they? I mean, we had 70 million to throw it gay, apparently.
00:14:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we bought we bought a Sula even though he could sit on the bench and Eddie says in his post post-match press conference I can't bring Callan Wilson on and I haven't got another attacking option on the bench apart from the centre forward he paid 15 million quid for Eddie is he deluded was he was he unconscious and just woke up in time to be told that we've managed to scratch a one-wall drawer at Crystal Palace and just made all of this up Kevin what was he bloody talking about
00:14:32
Kev
You do make some good points, definitely. However, I think via Sula, I get ah I get ah kind of understand it in a weird way.
00:14:36
Jo
Thank you.
00:14:43
Kev
I know not many people will, but look when he brought in Lewis Hall and when Bruno came in and Tino, all the young players he buys would never just come straight into the team. He likes to almost seemingly protect them.
00:14:55
Kev
I wouldn't blame him by the way at the minute when he looked half of a, I'm not going to say half, a small minority of a fanbase, I wouldn't mind him protecting a Sula. So I understand why Barnes came on and all of that stuff. In terms of moving the ball well, I think it's probably the first time in three years he is lying to us.
00:15:12
Kev
But I think he's also, we've got it we've got to keep in mind that exactly what you said, he hasn't been allowed to bring in new players, which is part of the issue why we have been found out potentially a little bit attacking wise. And yes, he can mix it up in trading and stuff, but he has to protect these players. He doesn't know when he can just ship them out. He doesn't know when he can. He can't just come out and say, we were dreadful. We didn't move a ball well, didn't manage a single shot on target. it's a disc If he comes out and says that he's lost a dressing room, he may as well just resign if he comes out and says that.
00:15:42
Kev
It is frustrating from a fan's point of view but I think again we just need the sensible hats off, he can't come out and slate the players, he cannot come out and just have a go at every single one of them and say they were diabolical.
00:15:52
Kev
He might do that behind the scenes by the way, we don't know what went on in my dressing room, he could have absolutely lost his head and went through them but in front of the media I think he has to show that he is going to protect these players and I think he also has to show
00:16:04
Jo
yeah
00:16:06
Kev
some of the fans who will understand it that he isn't a Jose Mourinho, he isn't an Antonio Conte who is going to come out and absolutely smash a player. So I think there's a little bit of that going on. And yeah, i I think when, if anyhow did feel like that somehow at the end of the game, he won't be feeling like that today. And when he's watched it back and when he's analysed it, he will not be feeling like that. And you can guarantee I back them and I always back them. I back them too much. I know I do. But he will be having them words with the players. I thought Harvey Barnes was non-existent. I thought Gordon was poor. I thought Isaac and before he came off was not very good either. And i can we can say that as fans and we can share that opinion. And I think it's good that we can and we can hold players accountable and managers when I feel like it's fair. Even I'd probably never hold any hell accountable if I'm being completely honest with you.
00:16:52
Kev
and but He can't do that in in public, but he can do it privately and we don't know. We'll we'll be able to tell on Wednesday. When we come out on Wednesday and how we're moving the ball and how we are attacking them at home on Wednesday night, we will see if anyhow genuinely thought that we moved the ball well because we'll either be dead at them, high intensity, the players will want to prove a point and make make it up to Eddie, or we will be a little bit slow on lethargic. And if that's the case, then I will come back to you e and I will say,
00:17:21
Kev
Maybe he did think we moved the ball well, but he's probably just protecting these players. He knows it wasn't a good performance.
00:17:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he wasn't slow in being quite critical for Eddie Hale in saying that he really didn't like the last 30 minutes against West Ham. I mean, I read between the lines there. He was basically slayed them off for completely losing the plot and and he made excuses for them. I played some of them out of position and we had a couple of injuries, but, you know, that That was at least honest about that West Ham's and supportive.
00:17:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we can do it, but that was just made up yesterday, I thought.
00:17:58
Kev
And.
00:18:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think, Joel? Do you think he had any sort of...
00:18:03
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:18:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean
00:18:05
Jo
Huh.
00:18:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm speechless. How can he say? He just forgotten he bought him. How can he say it I didn't have another attacking option on the bench when he's got a young center forward? I know he wants to protect him and save him, but surely when your only functioning center forward is limped off after 20 minutes, and you know that Callum Wilson's only got 20 minutes in him, bring Willasula on for 45 minutes, either side a half time.
00:18:23
Jo
Mm-hmm. Yeah.
00:18:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sub him again and bring Wilson on if you really think he's struggling. But you know, the kid might just, be he might just just do something.
00:18:36
Jo
Mm
00:18:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nobody knows how he's going to play. I've been quite impressed with how fast and how strong and how willing a runner he is of the few times we have seen him.
00:18:39
Jo
-hmm.
00:18:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just can't believe we didn't give him a try. But Harvey Barnes came on. I'm joining your team. I'm thinking Harvey Barnes is definitely not good enough for this team.
00:18:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Cash in in.
00:18:56
Kev
the first time somebody's agreed with them.
00:18:56
Jo
And we'll take them.
00:18:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think we'll get $40 million back for it.
00:19:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
But look, cash in in. Let's get some of that money back and reinvest it in a right-winger maybe.
00:19:07
Kev
I think before we do.
00:19:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Joanna. I feel like I haven't asked Joanna anything in this part.
00:19:10
Kev
four Before we do jump with Joe, sorry, Joe, I'll just quickly say, I think if you were to look at the bench at that time when Isaac comes off and you have got Harvey Barnes, who is a Premier League player, played for Leicester, got Gold, is he still on a joint top score or second top score of the season?
00:19:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:25
Kev
And then you've got a young...
00:19:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
join join top
00:19:28
Kev
And look, I'm with you, Ian, the short things, but but the little bits I've seen of us who I do like, but You look at somebody you've paid $15 million for who isn't Premier League proven already, is very young and anyhow likes to protect with you, or you've got a player who is 26, 27, whatever he is, second top scorer or joint top scorer of a season from from out wide and not even playing every game. I think most of more sensible fans in that position would bring Barnes on because he seems like the most obvious choice in a Premier League match.
00:19:59
Kev
I agree with you, he should not be saying he has no over-attacking options. I think his head's probably just a bit all over the floor because he thought, oh, we've got a wheel one here, one nil, and they've conceded last minute. And then he doesn't know whether to come out and slate the team because he'll already be quite low after conceding last minute goal. And he's probably not sure what's going on in his head. He's been chucked in front of a camera. And he's thought, well, I'm normally honest with our fans, but I can't be honest this time. I think Barnes was a sensible option at that moment.
00:20:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you? Barnes, a left winger, coming on to play on the right wing so you can move the left wing you already had playing on the right wing to play centre forward.
00:20:27
Kev
no
00:20:32
Kev
and over Gordon Gordon when he's played centre forward previously has looked good for Newcastle he has he has I know it's easy to forget about now when we've he but he wasn't looking good on the wing in that game was he he wasn't looking good on the wing that game go on Joe
00:20:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's not a sensible option.
00:20:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's never looked as good as he does when he plays on the left wing.
00:20:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Say something before the next advert, Joe, please go on.
00:20:52
Jo
I know it's good. I feel for Othella because I'm feeling a bit like Othella right now. Just sitting the air in the wings, watching it all unfold, thinking, Jesus, this is going to hell, right?
00:21:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:21:04
Jo
And they're not even giving us a chance. No one will mess with you guys. and I'll be honest the only real thing I've got to say about Eddie is I've always loved how kind of nice and calm and he's very well made your train put in a good way like I love the way he doesn't kick off by the way I've never ever once slayed him and I've always thought he's got this calmness about him that I couldn't be that calm Hell no. I'd be flipping one way or another. I don't have that kind of mentality. And I don't think many people do with him, but I did not appreciate him pretty much lying. And that's the first time, like Kev said, in three years that it felt like he'd almost lied to us and in a sense, didn't it? Because
00:21:42
Jo
just you don't have to slay them right i didn't i would never expect any because you're right you will never come out and totally slag off the guys and be like oh he was shot and he was shot and whatever but you can be honest and you can just say we didn't move the ball well we didn't do that you don't have to say we did and like just completely flip it on to just yeah it was just a down right line i think it just topped off what was already a very frustrating performance put it that way and i'll be honest you guys are
00:22:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
frustrating and then frustrating and then we had our and then we had our intelligence what a truly insulted is what I thought anyway.
00:22:12
Jo
Yeah, go on.
00:22:19
Kev
He's just had a camera shoved in his feet. He's trying to... The players will be... He's always trying to protect the players. The players will be devastated, conceived in the last minute. This is what Newcastle fans forget. They'll be devastated as well and they'll know they didn't play well. The last thing the players want after 94 minutes against Palace is the manager coming out and saying,
00:22:37
Kev
We didn't move a ball well enough. We weren't missing. We're probably already in there down and out thinking I can't believe we've conceded such a pony goal a week ago in the last minute. And then our managers coming out and saying we're bloody hopeless.
00:22:48
Kev
The fans online are saying we're bloody hopeless. What the hell? Like he is trying to, I genuinely believe he is lying.
00:22:52
Jo
I'll be too soft on them, by the way.
00:22:54
Kev
but he' trying is
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
solution The solution, Kevin, is for them not to be so bloody hopeless the next time.
00:22:56
Jo
but
00:22:59
Jo
But...
00:23:00
Jo
The players deserve to be blasted, I'll be honest. It's a strange one, but they do. To me, the I'm not saying they should have had it done publicly, but I really hope he went to town on them. We'll never know, but I really hope
00:23:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway.
00:23:00
Kev
I agree.

Strategic Changes and Future Predictions

00:23:10
Jo
he went to town on them.
00:23:10
Kev
My
00:23:11
Jo
Because they were shocking, and I don't actually blame how, yes, he got things wrong, but I've always went back to those players were pathetic. They were they were hopeless, so yeah. if There's a lot on them, so...
00:23:21
Kev
defensively a won Defensively the Defensively the wound.
00:23:23
Jo
No, no, I'm all, you know, how as I said before, I'm talking about going forward. um Your big stars, like we said there, Gordon, Isaac, whatever.
00:23:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right.
00:23:30
Jo
So yeah, those are the guys I've got an issue with right now.
00:23:31
Kev
I agree. they They have a lot to answer for. And I think Eddie Hall might have might be asking them questions behind closed doors, but I don't think you can.
00:23:34
Jo
Yeah.
00:23:38
Jo
I hope so.
00:23:39
Kev
And like we all agree he can't do it in public, but I agree. Look, he's probably just had a camera shoved in his face.
00:23:42
Jo
No, no.
00:23:43
Kev
he'll He'll be devastated. He'll be gutted with a camera shoved in his face. He's been asked a question and he's probably just for God, see anything to get me out of this situation. Just get me out. I don't want to be here.
00:23:54
Kev
I just want to get back with my team. I'm defending them.
00:23:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
He thinks he's Paul McKenna. And just by saying it, he can hypnotize the entire Newcastle fan base. They're all sitting there going, well, what a good point that was we got at Crystal Palace this afternoon. Kev, give us the JSPN advert, Kev, and we could try and work out what we could do to fix this.
00:24:16
Kev

Global Sports Podcast Network
Excellent, thank you, Kevin. Right, I put down for part three. what What changes do we make to fix this? Are there changes he can make to fix it? Is he going to say, oh, we just have to do a lot more on the training ground, like the big training week that they just had to try and fix the West Ham game at Crystal Palace? Joe, are there changes you would make? Are the players that aren't in there that we think could come in and actually make a difference?
00:25:11
Jo
Well, you pointed out right at the start that you were bang on. And this is a scary point. He did play his strongest team. He did. Realistically, if we're talking about players on paper here, he played his strongest team. So if I'm about to swap people out, I'm going to swap people out for people that are technically weaker, technically people that we in the past have said, oh, we don't want them to play. But if I'm honest, I'm going to call for my boy Murphy to come back, right? So him, he's coming on the right. Gordon will be out on the left, but he needs to give his head a wobble.
00:25:43
Jo
Isaac needs to do something with his... I probably can't say what I want to say. Yeah, you see, there's a problem. Um... Um... I don't actually...
00:25:52
Kev
I wouldn't play Gordon without you. If you're going down that route, Joe, I agree with you.
00:25:55
Jo
You wouldn't play either of them.
00:25:57
Jo
Oh, no, yeah.
00:25:57
Kev
If you go down that route, I don't think you should.
00:26:00
Jo
Hmm.
00:26:00
Kev
I think you're making an a great point, but I don't think Gordon just gets...
00:26:03
Jo
Mm-hmm.
00:26:03
Kev
This is the problem. If Gordon just gets in, he's going to walk around thinking it doesn't matter what I do.
00:26:06
Jo
You know what?
00:26:07
Jo
I know.
00:26:07
Kev
I'm not going to get dropped.
00:26:08
Jo
But the problem we've got is that Barnes would be on the left, but then we've just made the point that Barnes has been playing poorly.
00:26:09
Kev
Sorry, Joe.
00:26:09
Kev
Carry on.
00:26:16
Kev
Put Murphy on my left and put Mickey on the right.
00:26:16
Jo
Honestly, maybe on the left could be interesting.
00:26:21
Kev
Mickey O'Brien.
00:26:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
They can't do that. We're playing Liverpool next. So he's going to pick the same team and tell him tell him they've got a tell them they've got a one chance.
00:26:25
Jo
I mean, he's not going to do it against Liverpool. It's a problem. But that's the concern.
00:26:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you know what these you know what these high paid charlatans are going to do? They're probably going to go and beat Liverpool the same way as they came from playing absolutely pathetically against Chelsea and then destroyed Chelsea and Arsenal at the end of that same week.
00:26:39
Jo
Oh, they'll turn up.
00:26:44
Jo
They'll turn up on Wednesday.
00:26:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
They'll do that. They'll do that.
00:26:46
Jo
They will.
00:26:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
and then And then go and lose at Brentford and draw Nill at home with Leicester because that's who they are.
00:26:54
Jo
I'm sticking some bets on me.
00:26:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
how do we I don't know how we fix this. How do we fix it? I think Trips needs to be in.
00:26:58
Jo
I don't.
00:27:01
Jo
I agree. Livermento was shocking.
00:27:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
At least if Kieran Trippier is playing, if Trippier is playing, at least we've got one person we know that can knock a cross in.
00:27:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's got to be somebody in centre forward.
00:27:10
Jo
Well, speaking of the defence, actually, you know, Tino was poor. He was the worst one in the defence, I think. He was. I was screaming for trips to come on, but he didn't, obviously.
00:27:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think Trips has got to start.
00:27:23
Kev
think what Joe said about dropping the so-called bigger tanking players, if PSR hadn't handcuffed us and chopped our leg off, we would be able to do that.
00:27:23
Jo
I agree.
00:27:33
Kev
We'd be able to have almost a second team come in and it keeps EZAC and Gordon out for three or four games because we've got these world-class superstars coming in we can just bring in when people aren't playing well.
00:27:35
Jo
Yeah.
00:27:45
Kev
I would agree but this is another reason why and Ian asked a great question as he always does. How do we fix it? We fix it by sticking together, we fix it by staying united, we fix it by keeping them core values as a supporter and as a team and as a manager which we had three years ago when we take over happening we had so much hope.
00:28:03
Kev
We stick together. Now, I agree. I'd love to drop a place. But again, he's both made an excellent point. He's not going to bring in Murphy and I'm running on the wing and bench Barnes, Gordon and Isaac against Liverpool.
00:28:13
Jo
Mm hmm.
00:28:14
Kev
It's not going to happen because we don't have a squad depth to do that. So we have to show up Wednesday night. We have to do our part. and bring all the positivity and all the fantastic atmosphere like we normally do on Memnite. And we need to have trust in any house, someone who hasn't really stayed us wrong in terms of the journey so far. Yes, look, West Ham, he got things wrong. I think he went a little bit too desperate, too early. And I think I don't know if he did get anything wrong. He got the post-match conference wrong. But in terms of team selection, like we like we spoke about, we don't. So let's hope he does bring Trippie back in a minute. is
00:28:47
Kev
or mohi typical team I'd love to see Wilson start if he's ready. He gives us so much something so different as a number nine, he really does. and I know people like to make the thing about him not being fit and he'll be injured again, but when he is fit and he is firing, he's just he so dangerous.
00:29:04
Kev
and
00:29:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think I agree that Trippier and Wilson have got a big part to play on Wednesday night.
00:29:04
Kev
but yeah you but
00:29:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
What I'm missing, and I know these players have got two ways of playing, and this is why I think they will come back on Wednesday night. Intensity is meant to be our identity.
00:29:22
Kev
I agree.
00:29:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's what got us out of relegation trouble. That's what drove us up to finish fourth in qualifier for the Champions League. And for me, Intensity is our identity when we're playing somebody else aspiring to be in the top six most of the time, but not against anybody else.
00:29:39
Kev
I agree, agree.
00:29:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's when we need it most. That will blow teams away.
00:29:43
Jo
yeah
00:29:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely blow teams away. Could you see Wambasaka and, uh, forget the other, the other fullback's name.
00:29:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
could, could you see them coping with being put under that sort of pressure? I can't.
00:30:01
Kev
I agree, i've I've said it on this podcast a couple of times, our attitude against the, not the weaker teams, but but the teams where the players are almost like, well, if we show up, it'll be enough.
00:30:07
Jo
Yeah. Yeah.
00:30:11
Kev
We have had that attitude. Again, it's something I know.
00:30:11
Jo
yeah
00:30:13
Kev
Well, I don't know. I don't know that well, but I believe as a fan, Eddie Howe will be talking about that and will be discussing that and will be having to go at them behind closed doors.
00:30:24
Kev
Rightfully, we shouldn't see that. The press definitely shouldn't see youve had that because that'll ruin a club. but But look, we've got to remember exactly like we mentioned before, Joe made a great point. I wish we could drop some of the so-called superstars, but PSR has done that 14 years of neglect from our previous owner, which we've all of a sudden forgotten about. and That stops us from doing what we want to do in this situation. So until that moment, until we spend another 300, 400 million or whenever we're allowed,
00:30:50
Kev
We need to stick together, and we need to remain sensible, and we need to back the players. Look, Eddie Howell got it wrong against West Ham, I believe. He went too desperate, too early. Palace, I actually think we defended well, but the players going forward have a lot to answer for. And that's it, as far as I'm going to say. And we move on, we go forward, and we we come together for the next game. And hopefully, I'm sat on the next pod saying, told you all, we beat Liverpool. We're really good again, I promise.
00:31:13
Kev
But that's the wonderful thing about football and a wonderful thing about the Premier League. We're not the only team this year who have been inconsistent. It's just part of a wonderful league and the wonderful sport we follow.
00:31:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we have been consistent care consistently inadequate apart from one or two apart from one or two games.
00:31:30
Kev
No.
00:31:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Yeah, we have.
00:31:33
Kev
I can name four.
00:31:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
We haven't been intense. we You can think of a draw against City. We're going into Liverpool in the same situation we were when we went into City, so I'm hoping that they pull it around like they did when they played City.
00:31:39
Kev
Yeah, we could have won that one.
00:31:45
Kev
We'll win.
00:31:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course, I think, as I said to Joe, we were quite pleased with that draw against City, but of course they've lost the next six in the Premier League.
00:31:46
Kev
We'll win again.
00:31:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
so
00:31:52
Kev
We started that.
00:31:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh
00:31:53
Kev
That was us. how good we are.
00:31:54
Jo
ah that I said that Ian.
00:31:55
Kev
We started it.
00:31:57
Jo
We start the demise of sitting.
00:31:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, look, hey, onwards and upwards, we're going.
00:32:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Tootlepip.
00:32:03
Kev
Our way with that.
