Daily Newcastle

Iain 'Chopper' Mackay hosts Kevin 'Midfield Dynamo' Esther and the charming Jake Leatherland from Daily Leicester to preview Saturday's Premier League clash at St James Park.

Will Newcastle find some form to correct the performance against Brentford or will Leicester provide a Ruud awakening? Did you see what I did there?

That is an amazing beginning for me. I didn't hear any of it. but I'm assuming that the start has finished and you boys heard in it because you seem to be reacting to something. like Anyway, in auspicious.

Excitement for Upcoming Game

00:00:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, my name is Ian Mackay and welcome to the Daily New Castle. Today it is thursday well Wednesday and we're recording our course over Thursday podcast with Jake Litherland from the Daily Leicester. How are you doing, Jake?
00:00:34
Jake Leatherland
Yeah, I'm good. I'm i'm really excited to to look at the game at the weekend. We're on the back of two really positive results. So probably the most positive I've felt all season, to be honest with you. And I'm i'm also excited to hear your thoughts about Newcastle's start and aims for really for the rest of the season.
00:00:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's important to hear that I'm going to ask my yeah black and white buddy, Kev,
00:00:59
Kev
Thank you.
00:00:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
They have confidence and they're looking forward to a game for the first time this season.

Newcastle's Recent Performance

00:01:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
How are we feeling about this game, Kev?
00:01:07
Kev
I'm, I'm feeling okay. I mean, we've as much as if you listen to the inside noise or the outside noise in your console fans, we've actually only lost two of our last seven in all competitions. So even though when it seems like we're not in great form of some of the negativity around the club, I still think we're in a nice position, but yeah, Lester, it's that new manager bounds, isn't it? We've always got to be wary of it.

Impact of Managerial Changes

00:01:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely, and you were talking earlier about a fantastic stat that Ruth van der Sleroy is the manager who has replaced 100% of the managers who have been sitting in the Premier League this season so far, which I'm hoping he does continue his 100% record into future months, because they exposed the manager very quickly then, wouldn't they?
00:01:43
Kev
Yeah. And not lost the game.
00:01:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
it ah It also occurred to me that Leicester's upturn fortunes, and maybe we can ask to check what we think could be hard to go or or if they got rid of them very quickly, their upturn fortunes have come with a whole win against West Ham and we sat through our dreadful performance against West Ham and coming back from too damn to get a pot against Brighton who have also done the dirty honors at the second-genesis park this year.

Leicester's Managerial Surprise

00:02:27
Kev
with one touch in our box.
00:02:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm just observing that this just because they're all sore points and I'm hypersensitive about them. But anyway, yeah, Jake, you're feeling more confident than you were earlier in the season, presumably.
00:02:42
Jake Leatherland
m
00:02:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I always thought, though, the tag that the three promoter teams were the favorites to get relegated
00:02:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
was a little bit harsh when you look at the quality of some of the players that Leicester had and how well they played last year. Of course, that was on Mariska, who was doing the same with Chelsea in Premier League this season, and you had Gary Cooper take over, and the results went brilliant, but it seemed really, really quick for for you to get rid of living him.
00:03:00
Jake Leatherland
Mm.
00:03:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
What was the feeling amongst the Leicester boys with that?
00:03:12
Jake Leatherland
Yes, it's one I've been asked by a lot of of fans, and I think generally there was a surprise from from fans of ah ah clubs that aren't less during the Premier League, which I sort of get because you're right, it was fairly early. I think after 12 games, I think we'd played 11 games, 12 games. So the main, there was quite a number of reasons, really. It wasn't one factor. And when it happened so early, I think generally it's never going to be one thing. The results in the first, I think the four games before we went had were quite poor. We'd got a pointy end-stick switch with a last-minute goal and then we'd been beaten by Manchester United twice in the cup, under Van Nistroy, funny enough, beaten by Chelsea and also beaten by Nottingham Forest. So those results obviously weren't great but I think the performances were quite negative. I think Newcastle fans can certainly relate to that feeling of watching a team that's really negative and and boring and it's hard to watch, you know.
00:04:08
Jake Leatherland
Newcastle yeah they go nods there from both of you obviously for the audio listeners they aren't going to pick that up but yeah look Newcastle so you saw better times
00:04:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that was all Canada saw until about three years ago.
00:04:18
Kev
I thought Rob said, I thought so Bobby.
00:04:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, what once you got into long trousers, that was all you ever watched.
00:04:23
Kev
Yeah.
00:04:26
Kev
Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, that was it.
00:04:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we know what you mean. But anyway, that change was taken and we've been slowly stepped in and it seems we've reached a new manager bounce, trying to tell.
00:04:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully it's the new manager bounce and we'll see on Saturday it's just the new manager bounce. But the results are certainly picked up. Interestingly, we have had vans clamouring for more than 12 months now for Eddie Howe to be replaced, Kev. And where can you go with him? Any eddie thoughts about Newcastle perhaps looking for a new manager bounce to get out of this disappointing start to the season?

Defense of Eddie Howe

00:05:09
Kev
I mean, my my thoughts on Eddie Hall were very pro Eddie Hall. I think we'd be absolutely nuts to get rid of him. And I'd actually, I'll come to Jake in a second. m It'll be amazing to hear what other fans think of some of our fans. I will say some because there's still a lot of fans who supported you how they must be looking at it from the outside. And just like Jake said, they're like Newcastle under Bruce, under Rafa, just sitting back, 11 men behind the ball at home against Burnley and all that type of stuff. We put up with that for years. And then Eddie Hall comes in, gives us the three best seasons we've had in some people's lifetimes.
00:05:45
Kev
and Arguably joined with obviously what I've seen under Bobby Robson and there's a small set where I see a small section I don't know how big it is really because social media blows everything out of proportion but and I'd like to think a small section of fans when wanting to replace them I look personally I'd give any out of the end of a season regardless of what happens I think he's the right man no matter what but I am massively proud of you how and like I said at the start look we've only lost two of our last seven in all competitions and So it's not, I mean, yeah, we've got some draws in there, which we don't want, but it's not the end of the world. We've been in a hell of a lot worse positions than what we are now. And yeah, we want to be higher up the table, but look how tight it is between, I think, I think between, I think I've said on a previous part, between now and Christmas, anybody between 12th and 5th could be in the top six. And you wouldn't be surprised which one it is. It wouldn't surprise you if it was anyone between 12th and 5th.
00:06:37
Kev
It wouldn't surprise you. You couldn't predict who's going to be in what position come Christmas. It's a vast close. So look, we've just got to keep the thief and I'm quite positive. I think it's at home. I think what doesn't help Lester, if I'm going to be completely honest with you, might not want to hear.
00:06:51
Kev
What doesn't help Leicester is the 4-2 loss to Brentford. I think the players will be desperate to put that right. I think Eddie Howell will be desperate to put it right. And I think we'll want to make a real statement at home in front of our own fans.
00:07:03
Kev
and Next game since that disappointing result, I think we could really go through the throat.
00:07:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:07:08
Kev
At least I hope we do.
00:07:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
but let Let me just go back to the question you posed for Jake. What's the outsider's view on Eddie Howe's situation at Newcastle? Can you understand why he might be starting to feel the pressure?
00:07:25
Jake Leatherland
Yes, so it's an interesting one. You're you're absolutely obviously from a ah ah neutral outside of perspective. I see last season as well, we weren't in the Premier League, so it was nice watching the Premier League for a year and not having a team in the running. So it meant had I could just watch it and and not have any sort of bias towards any of the games so I think ah from the outside I would be surprised if you got rid of anyhow at this point because I don't see anyone available that would be better than him at this point and also I sort of look at your squad especially the defence I'll be honest and go there's there' holes there isn't there? Botmans obviously a massive one with the injury so that that can't be helped in that way but
00:08:07
Jake Leatherland
Lloyd Kelly someone you bought in in the summer and I'm I look at some of the recruitment and go where's the maybe a lack of quality or a lack of thought in terms of you've got Harvey Barnes and Anthony Gordon both left wingers I mean Harvey Barnes never played right wing for us and every time I've watched Anthony Gordon I always think he should be he's much better on the left so where was that planning so so I look at some of the squad planning and the quality and these sort of elements and I go well how much of that is up to any how and it's like I don't know that from the outside perspective maybe you guys can answer that question more but I'd be surprised if you got rid of at this point and however clearly the board and and the owners are so ambitious
00:08:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very good.
00:08:49
Jake Leatherland
I don't know, sometimes be careful what you wish for in terms of it might propel you further on or it might set you back. And sometimes you don't know that until you you rip the band-aid off and and take the risk.
00:08:58
Jake Leatherland
But and I think I agree with Kev, end of the season or at least until you've sort of played cup matches, and especially, you know, the FA Cup coming up, you might end up having a really good cup run, maybe a bit more of a disappointing finish, but a cup run would be great for the club, wouldn't it?
00:09:13
Jake Leatherland
I'm sure you'll agree with that.
00:09:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
oh
00:09:14
Kev
Yeah, yeah, we're we're quite lucky where we've had.
00:09:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, well, an early day.
00:09:17
Kev
Yeah.
00:09:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got a quarter funnel a week tonight, is it?
00:09:24
Kev
Yep.
00:09:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, exciting stuff. I've got tickets for it. Excellent. I think I'm in Kev's camp. We both think Eddie has supporters.
00:09:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've seen how he's taken Laffer's team and Steve Bruce's team and converted them into a Premier League outfit that can qualify for the Champions League. I think they performed in that season. But that's of course the manager that did that. You're absolutely right. There are holes in the squad. I think we've really been hamstrung by this PSR that was just introduced. I think precisely to do that, to protect the big cartel of six,
00:10:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Everyone terrified that somebody else might do what Leicester did a few years ago. Honestly, people don't follow them. um That's what the problem has been. So, you know, Eddie's bracing us, I think, for having to sell some players in order to trade. But we've got some fabulous assets that we could trade in and get some significant funds in the war chest to but to upgrade. I'm going to pause there and do a musical strategy, which I'm going to do myself.

Back. Away back. and
00:11:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who's going to turn out for less of them? I've tried to do a little bit of quick research to see what shape your squad is in. Apparently only two fit, we'd feel this, indeed suspended. And I was reading about a, maybe you've seen him play or maybe you've heard about him, but I haven't. I was reading about an 18 year old he pitched from Chelsea, last summer, called Goodwin or Goldwyn.
00:11:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
who apparently is tearing up the trees and he might be playing in midfield and that would just put the tin hat on our home performances recently if if Cole Palmer's younger brother turns up and takes them into care of us. but What's the squad looking like?
00:12:09
Jake Leatherland
um um It's interesting interesting, you mentioned Michael Golding, so i I took the opportunity to watch our 21s play, not in Forrest's B team, only last Friday. And he played, and we spent, well, I say we spent five million quid on him. Dewsbury Hall went the other way and there were separate deals, but obviously, like we've seen, they're separate deals in sort of inverted commas or, you know, ah ah you know theyre they're part of transferring money, effectively.
00:12:34
Jake Leatherland
He was alright, he was okay in that game but he didn't pull up any trees. I i did wonder possibly he was a little unchallenged by the game and he could have pushed himself further but we haven't seen him at all in a first team game and so I wouldn't have thought he'll chuck him in on Saturday. Oliver Skip and Bubakari Samari will probably be the midfield two with Hamza Choudhry as our substitute option if you like yeah indeed he's injured slash suspended and Harry Winx has been injured for the last three matches now and I wouldn't have thought would come straight back in to start so he's still a big loss but Sumari in his two games has been
00:13:14
Jake Leatherland
incredible, but it's probably the best two performances I've seen him play in a Leicestershire and he's been here I think four seasons now and and that's not because he's brilliant that's more because we've been so disappointed by him so hopefully Sumari keeps up that form but yeah you know I think we'll be fine in the mid-foot area with those two is if we pick up a knock or they're tired we don't have the legs to then change the game in there where Newcastle obviously have quite a few options so that could certainly be quite a key part of the game in the second half as we get tired legs we haven't got those fresh ones but like we normally do to bring on and change the game
00:13:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
At the attack, the arrowhead, still led by 58-year-old phenomenon Chaney Vardy, still running a bit in the Premier League. I'm exaggerating, of course. Is there anybody else coming through?
00:14:08
Jake Leatherland
We've got Pat Sendaka on the bench but he's been here again three or four seasons now.
00:14:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's always on the one bench, that's where he that's his best position, isn't it?
00:14:15
Jake Leatherland
yeah Yeah, exactly. So just as collection at Joe was, to be honest, and he was here for a long time. So yeah, Jamie Vardy's out, out, out, Sean, you know, his longevity has gone past both of them. And yeah, he's been brilliant this season. Jamie Vardy, every time he gets written off by anyone, he just, I don't know where he finds it. Honestly, he was, he was unfit at the start of season. He spent most of the last season partially injured playing mind, but clearly sort of playing on one leg at one point he was so injured but scoring goals and and I don't know if for anyone who hasn't seen the our second goal on Sunday I think it epitomised how much he's grown as a player because the ball gets rolled into him and it includes
00:14:57
Kev
Great square.
00:14:58
Jake Leatherland
yeah exactly and i including myself by the way everyone has said him is screaming at him to shoot and he just takes that second rolls it across bobby reed can't miss or shouldn't miss luckily doesn't uh but i think that just shows fadi's intelligence the way he's grown because
00:14:58
Kev
Yeah.
00:15:03
Kev
Yeah.
00:15:15
Jake Leatherland
five, five years ago, he's probably, smashed he probably would have smashed it in to be fair to him because he does it.
00:15:16
Kev
Hmm.
00:15:19
Jake Leatherland
But yeah, he gets us a ah point with his goal. Great finishing him. What an assist. So yeah, he's still a frat, even though he is almost 38 next month. I think a month today will be 38.
00:15:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
he said He hasn't really lost any pace on that I mean I know he won't be quite the same as he was ten years years ago but I mean he's still rapping and me but you have some we have some very slow centre halves that I'm going to be yeah trying to tie him up with.
00:15:39
Jake Leatherland
Yeah, for his age, he's incredibly, incredibly fast.
00:15:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think about our team?
00:15:48
Kev
and
00:15:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Are we any new injuries you've heard of?
00:15:53
Kev
It was Joe Willick. Willick's injured again. Hamstring problem, which is not a shock because Joe Willick just can't see a state of fit. Emile Kraft, obviously, I think he's done his shoulder or something like that. He's had an operation. He's on the way back. And Botman's still out. Botman's been out a very long time. Lasselles is still out. It's funny because as Newcastle fans, we think, oh, we've got a full squad again. But we forget that because the last season, it feels like we've got a full squad, but we've still got four or five first team registered players injured, and which is which is a little bit crazy when you think about it.
00:16:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right.
00:16:27
Kev
But I think for us, for Newcastle fans, yeah, we almost have a fully fit squad, which is really nice to see after last season's horrendous injuries. In terms of the team and my team selection, I think Eddie will go back to the Liverpool lineup.
00:16:43
Kev
I think he's going to maybe try that Tenali, Bruno and Joe Linton combo again. in the middle hopefully to gnarly sit in central and Bruno is like an aide because Bruno played as an aide for the first time in however long and got two assists against Liverpool so I think he'll try and go back to bat and I think it'll be a front three of potentially Murphy, Isaac and Gordon.
00:17:01
Kev
Isaac looks like he's coming back into form and we missed an absolute sitter against Brentford after going around with goalkeeper but numbers wise it looks like he's coming back into form.
00:17:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
What was he doing there?
00:17:11
Kev
I've got no idea I don't understand how you can go around the goalkeeper and not shoot
00:17:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jake, did you see that?
00:17:14
Jake Leatherland
Yeah, I did.
00:17:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did did you did you see he's a go-round keeper and three yards out? Maybe not even there.
00:17:22
Jake Leatherland
Well, he he's in my fantasy team.
00:17:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
What was it? You would you put it in.
00:17:25
Jake Leatherland
is it He's in my fantasy team, so i wasn't I wasn't fussed about the score because I had Brentford players in as well, but I was certainly fussed when I saw he'd missed that one and surprised, to saying that he did something similar with Chelsea, didn't he?
00:17:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
shock
00:17:37
Jake Leatherland
Am I right in saying a fair few weeks ago,
00:17:38
Kev
It did.
00:17:40
Jake Leatherland
He went round sandwiches, slightly different, but but you know, yeah.
00:17:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
He did. He needed to square it.
00:17:43
Kev
Yeah.
00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
He needed to square it.
00:17:44
Kev
Yeah.
00:17:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
There was four players sitting with an open goal ready to tap it in because it held on for so long.
00:17:50
Jake Leatherland
Hmm.
00:17:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
That one on the left side of the team had got into the box.
00:17:53
Kev
Yeah.
00:17:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, he was able to get there. Someone got round and blocked it and they put out for a call.
00:17:57
Kev
To be fair, I think i think with the pace of all certain halves, as much as I love, I love Fabian Charles, so I'm not criticising him here, but you could probably bring Rude van Nistoroy on. He's probably still got enough pace to keep up with ours, and him and Jimmy Valli as a front two would be ex exciting to see.
00:18:10
Kev
I loved watching Rude, by the way.
00:18:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:18:12
Kev
He was one of my favourite strikers, him and Henri, when I was younger, playing Championship manager 0-1-0-2.
00:18:17
Jake Leatherland
oh great throwback love that
00:18:17
Kev
What a combination of M2 were. for
00:18:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
right
00:18:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
We do, work we do try to mitigate the look of the pace that Shah and Ben have got, because we've got two really meaningful bugs, and I think that has helped.
00:18:32
Kev
yeah
00:18:34
Kev
I'd actually like to see Trippier come back in talking about team selection. I think Trippier, if he's fit, I know he was ill.

Trippier's Potential Impact

00:18:41
Kev
Again, was it a Liverpool game he was ill? or Might be an ill for Brentford as well, but I'd like to see Trippier come back in. I know he's not as good as what he was when he first joined, but just his leadership qualities I think will come in so handy.
00:18:53
Kev
especially against somebody like Jamie Vardy, who's experienced and knows exactly how to move around the box and move around the area. I think Trippie could really, really be a massive help if he was to start, but I'm not sure Eddie'll drop Tino.
00:19:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I don't think you will, but I've called for Shookier for the last couple of games because I just think that you've got five or six great corners coming in there, two or three fabulous free kicks, and they produced so much last year that we're missing them.
00:19:14
Jake Leatherland
Hmm. Hmm.
00:19:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're missing them.
00:19:22
Kev
We are.
00:19:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have a bit of a goal scoring crisis this year, Jake, in comparison to the 85 that we scored in 38 games last year. We're on a goal again, isn't it? We did get two.
00:19:34
Kev
A little bit more, we got three against Liverpool, didn't we? Three all draw.
00:19:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
three and two years so we're not quite as bad as we were looking but but all those extra goals are produced at the point for us. I'll just pause there then with our squad reviews ask care if to give us a global squad podcast network message.
00:19:54
Kev

00:20:35
Kev
so
00:20:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Jake, I'm going to use that as a fabulous link to talk to you about the players on your side you think we need to look out for now. but We know to look out for Jamie Vardy, so don't tell us about him.
00:20:47
Jake Leatherland
It's much I want to.
00:20:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
But who was who else has his committed to this squad since they were last in the Premier League?
00:20:56
Jake Leatherland
o
00:20:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's that is really it's a real apprenticeship quality that we ought to be looking out for.
00:21:02
Jake Leatherland
Yeah, the squad is is quite different in in lots of areas, and but then you have sort of those reliable faces like Wilfred indeed, Jamie Vardy, et etc. so and But certainly the attacking aspects in terms of the attacking midfield, if you like, the wide areas are certainly very fresh. and Mavadidi is someone who hasn't played in the last couple of games, but I know the fans certainly want to see back in the team. and But the real one is Balawa Knus, who's our Moroccan number 10 wide man. Really, really excited about this lad. Last two games has been brilliant. and
00:21:36
Jake Leatherland
Brighton a little bit more quiet but West Ham he was fantastic with a goal and assist and I tell you something to really look out for him he he really gets stuck in even though he's just come over to to play the Premier League he's still quite young he really gets stuck in likes to tackle so I'd be quite surprised.
00:21:50
Kev
It looks quite tricky as well. It looks like a tricky little player where I saw it was the game you got the goal of me assists and it was the first time I heard his name previously and it was the first time I watched him and I thought, Oh my God, he looks like a really good find.
00:22:04
Kev
Is it is he number 10?
00:22:04
Jake Leatherland
yeah well yeah so he sort of played off the left in the first half against West Ham then he'd moved into the middle even played out on the right and i thought he'd shown in all three to be honest i think if anything i think in long term he will be a number 10 but i actually like him off
00:22:04
Kev
Is that right?
00:22:11
Kev
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
00:22:21
Jake Leatherland
the the wings if you like just because he can get on the ball it depends on the game but just in the team getting onto the ball he causes problems um um some work some don't so this there could be chart times where someone's running through he doesn't quite make the pass we've seen that when he's on it and it works he's brilliant um even when he doesn't quite work his work rate is more than enough to to satisfy really
00:22:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you think however pronounced his name might have probably won't look like a bad krabble hand? Weltfast will be playing centre-half?
00:22:54
Jake Leatherland
And it's great.
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because he got a mistake in him, hasn't he?
00:22:55
Jake Leatherland
You know what? That pronunciation was fantastic. I'm very impressed. luckily I don't think he'll be playing.
00:23:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:23:03
Jake Leatherland
because yeah, see.
00:23:03
Kev
Oh, I want to shout that you're just a poop collegeini. I was really hoping for that on Saturday and now we can't do it because he's not bloody playing.
00:23:13
Jake Leatherland
Well, he probably will come on.
00:23:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why will it not be played?
00:23:16
Jake Leatherland
So he he hasn't started the last two due to poor performances in the games before. I think he fell out with Steve Cooper at the start of the season, like a lot did. and There was a whole thing about him not wanting to play his left centre half because he's right footed. So we brought Caleb Ocoliam and he played off the left and actually in Rood's two games, we've had Connor Cody, Investiguard, who have looked better, more sturdy. Investiguard's brilliant on the ball for for everything of his lack of pace that we talked about with new castles.
00:23:45
Jake Leatherland
Center asked we've certainly got a lack of pace with ours, but and Better on the ball more sturdy. Well fast will probably come on. He's come on in both games against Brian and West Ham. So I think you'll have your opportunity to To shout what you want to but yeah, I don't think you'll start yeah
00:23:57
Kev
I hope so.
00:24:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not a Goldie, Connor Cody was sit in the air behind Jerry Fuddy at school, wasn't he? Or am I exaggerating that as well? He's getting on a bit, isn't he? Or is it just because he's been in the Premier League for so long? I always thought he's a great player, he's got to play for England as well, doesn't he, Cody?
00:24:17
Jake Leatherland
very experienced, and didn't play much for us in the championship in truth. I think he possibly just about hit 10 games that was more a tactical thing. I know that surprised Leicester fans as much as anyone, he's probably going to end up playing more in the Premier League than he did in the championship.
00:24:33
Jake Leatherland
partially rotation, partially leadership, lots of different reasons in that. But yeah, they're solid enough. and Lack of pace. um um You'll have chances on Saturday.
00:24:44
Jake Leatherland
i'm I'm very confident in saying that because we've got one clean sheet all season.
00:24:46
Kev
He's making me feel good.
00:24:49
Jake Leatherland
I'm just hoping you don't take them. That's what West Ham and Brighton, well, West Ham more than Brighton didn't do.
00:24:54
Kev
Exactly. That's exactly what happened.
00:24:57
Jake Leatherland
Yeah, so we'll see.
00:24:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Brantford as well, to be fair, on Saturday.
00:24:58
Jake Leatherland
We'll see.
00:25:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, you know, they saw twice.
00:25:01
Kev
We had chances against Brent. We could have beaten up at half-time and nobody could have complained, but we just didn't take a lot of chances.
00:25:07
Jake Leatherland
Yeah, so we'll see.
00:25:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, what's the three what so change going to be for for that to to have a different outcome here? Will you tweak the side?
00:25:17
Kev
I'm thinking, again, I said earlier, I think you'll go with a lineup which played against Liverpool, which surprisingly, I mean, Jacob Murphy is is our informed player, which is really weird to say about it because I thought he had a very good game against Liverpool. He hit the post, you got two assists against Brentford, and he's not the type of player when you think of Newcastle, you think, well, we're going to watch out for Jacob Murphy because he's surrounded by Bruno and Tenali and Jolin and Isaac and Gordon.
00:25:44
Kev
but he's actually ah ah kind of apart from he's actually scoring the goals he's he's our in-form player. think it'll be interesting actually because Murphy might not start he might try and get Barnes and Gordon in the same team but like Jake referred to before it means you've got to play a one of them out of position and we it hasn't really worked When they've played out of position, one time it's really worked in terms of balance for home midfielders when Joel Hinton's went onto a wing. I thought he's had a great game on on both sides. He obviously cut inside from the right and scored against Forrest Joel Hinton and when he was on the left. I can't remember what game it was, but again, he he had another very effective performance in it and a good game protecting Lewis Hall.
00:26:20
Kev
So, yeah, I think it's going to be very interesting in terms of where we go, but I think the obvious danger man's EZAC, isn't it? It's got to be EZAC and Gordon. If Jake's talking about a lack of pace at the back, it's something Eddie and my team are going to know about. So do we target that? Do we do we get in behind with EZAC's pace, Gordon's pace, and try and hurt them that way? I will say, actually, let's also have another poor version of an ex-New Castle player, because we've got a Colicini one. They've also got a poor Warren Barton. Is it Kristianson with the middle part?
00:26:50
Jake Leatherland
yeah yeah big to christianson incredible
00:26:50
Kev
The light blonde hair looks just like Warren Martin. It's like...
00:26:55
Jake Leatherland
love the reference uh you know what it took until you said it was christianson i was thinking i couldn't clock it no no i get it now yeah christianson will definitely if you can start that chat on saturday that'll be a ah ah rogue one
00:26:58
Kev
What was he talking about?
00:27:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
What does he mean?
00:27:03
Kev
It looks like Warren Martin.
00:27:08
Kev
I'll try my best. I'll try my best.
00:27:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Were you coming up for the match at all Jake?
00:27:14
Jake Leatherland
I'm not, unfortunately.
00:27:16
Jake Leatherland
It's one of the grounds I've not visited in the Premier League. There aren't many, and it's one of the ones I haven't done. And I haven't even got an excuse because it's a three-clock kickoff on a Saturday. So I wish I had an excuse, and it was like a Friday night.
00:27:16
Kev
it's a shame.
00:27:29
Jake Leatherland
But no, unfortunately, I won't be. I have got one question for both of you. I'd love to know.

Harvey Barnes' Performance at Newcastle

00:27:34
Jake Leatherland
Harvey Barnes. Now obviously, X yeah group came through our academy. I'd love to know, obviously he's been 18 months now, like what's what's he been like? What's the overall feeling around him from yourselves, but also just generally the collective?
00:27:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I would say that we have, like Eddie, we can see that he's a girl scorer. We loved to cut it and and put it in the top corner on three or four times. Came on last year when we were trailing 3-1 to West Ham and together with the other substitutes to pin that game around for us to come back to win 4-3.
00:28:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
But my overriding impression of him is that he's injured because he had a baptismal which was going to put him out for a few weeks and he took about about four months out to get over it.
00:28:12
Jake Leatherland
yeah
00:28:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
i He's unfortunate that he's been recruited to play in the same position as Anthony Gordon, seemingly. Rabdon made it his own and got picked for England for, so really be hard to leave him out now. So at the moment, Barnes is our super-serve, isn't he, Kev?
00:28:36
Kev
Yeah, I think Barnes is a tough one.
00:28:36
Jake Leatherland
Yeah.
00:28:39
Kev
He's an unbelievable finisher.
00:28:39
Jake Leatherland
Hmm.
00:28:41
Kev
He's almost like if we didn't have Isaac or Wilson, he'd be our best finisher.
00:28:46
Kev
But I'm not massively impressed. I feel like I don't know if I'm just a bit harsh on him, but he doesn't seem to be able to beat a fullback.
00:28:54
Jake Leatherland
yeah
00:28:54
Kev
He's not particularly like he doesn't really get it. He doesn't even get a yard, which is amazing for somebody who's so good at finishing. You'd think you'd have at least one trick to cut inside and get a yard and shoot. so i think if he's if he gets a little space on the edge of a box and he goes to shoot you get really excited but other than that he's not particularly exciting for me i think he struggles in one-on-ones against fullbacks i wouldn't see his work rate is massively impressive but i don't know i feel like i'm being a bit harsh on him but don't get me wrong i would i would i would swap him for uh is it fatou for lester i would i would swap him for him in a in an absolute heartbeat if i could but unfortunately the engine we can't
00:29:18
Jake Leatherland
Hmm, yeah. Wow.
00:29:27
Jake Leatherland
oh yeah tall
00:29:33
Jake Leatherland
It's interesting interesting what you say there about Harvey Barnes because there's a feeling ah ah similar in terms of what I felt towards the end of his time with us. in he's actually He was brilliant for us for the first couple of years until he got injured against Arsenal. so I even remember the game and he was out for the rest of the season. It was that but strange Covid year with no fans.
00:29:52
Jake Leatherland
And until then he could take a player on, his his best attitude was he'd take um and run past people, lightning speed, take players on. He actually wasn't a great finisher. And then when he came back, his finishing massively improved.
00:30:02
Kev
and Yeah.
00:30:05
Jake Leatherland
he was He was really clinical to be fair to him. and but suddenly he would never take anyone. and I don't know if it's he's not confident in his body anymore and but after that he was never quite the same player and and I've never seen him the same and it it makes me gutted for him because he was brilliant before that and if he could have married up those two elements he'd be playing for England but I don't think he ever will because he can't.
00:30:27
Kev
I think it'd be a great centre forward if he could retrain as like a centre forward who could run in behind and get in one-on-one positions.
00:30:31
Jake Leatherland
know
00:30:34
Kev
I think it'd be absolutely lethal but it just, yeah, it's frustrating that he gets one-on-one with a full bat and you think, right, you're a winger, that's the space you want, attack him.
00:30:34
Jake Leatherland
His dad was
00:30:44
Kev
And he just he just cuts back inside and passes the ball bat and I think, come on, you've got to
00:30:48
Jake Leatherland
yeah
00:30:48
Kev
you've got to switch it up a little bit to give the defender something to think about so it's very frustrating for me personally I want to like him I really want to because he has scored like important goals and we come back and coming off the bench to rescue points I really want to like him but ah just think for 38 million pound I'm a little bit disappointed

Match Predictions: Newcastle vs. Leicester

00:31:06
Jake Leatherland
Yeah. Yeah.
00:31:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
like a prediction He'll be the first player sold in january January so that Newcastle can buy one or two big plays to improve the first team.
00:31:14
Kev
talk of it just talk of what's happening yep
00:31:15
Jake Leatherland
I have heard it, yeah, he and myself have heard it.
00:31:18
Kev
back to Leicester, would you take him?
00:31:19
Jake Leatherland
you Not for 38 million, we haven't got that, so...
00:31:23
Kev
30, we'll give him a Leicester, I'll do with deal now, forget Paul Mitchell, I'll do with deal now, 30 million pound Harvey Barnes, I'll shake your hand and we're done.
00:31:34
Jake Leatherland
If that was already signing, then I'd have to say no, because we're we're so desperate for our defence, and for it's a good offer though, I think i think someone might be interested.
00:31:41
Kev
right about What about 25 in El Canoose?
00:31:45
Jake Leatherland
Oh, they like rubbery.
00:31:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
fair
00:31:48
Kev
yeah
00:31:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
chancellor yal man
00:31:49
Kev
but
00:31:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
likebook we be sure we have to stop
00:31:51
Kev
Yeah.
00:31:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
butter of course the you'll end up getting sued for it then you be outof pocket at the yeah I'm going to ask you first Jake, your prediction on Saturday. Will you have a smile on your face at 5 o'clock?
00:32:08
Jake Leatherland
I hope so. We've actually got a nice little cushion from that bottom three for the first time and it won't last because Wolves have got Ipswich on Saturday or Sunday whenever they play so that's not going to last unless we can get a decent result. I think there will be goals in the game because as I say we've only kept one clean sheet and and we've only failed scoring one game. So that tells me there will be goals in the game, your games generally have goals in them, you know you've got some good attackers in there who are going to cause a problem. so I think you know what in the Brighton crossover last week I went for a 2-2 draw and that just about came good with a late comeback so I'm going to go for a 2-2 draw again because I fancy both teams score some goals and maybe we can if we can just nick it being a bit more clinical that that's how I think we might be able to just nick something away.
00:32:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
You have law protection?
00:33:00
Kev
I'm expecting a big reaction from a players after Brentford. I think internally from what you're again, you're only reading stuff online and it's all speculation. We don't actually know, but it sounds like some words were said between the players, not even with any how in terms of Bruno as a captain, kind of stepped up and said, this is far from acceptable in terms of where we are. and I'm expecting a big reaction. I'm expecting a good performance, but I'm not expecting to blow Leicester away. I think Rude van Nesteroy is a very good manager.
