every club every day the global sports podcast network hi everyone it's Lydia here from the Daily Brantford and today i'm joined by Michael from the Daily Newcastle how are you today Michael?
00:00:16
Speaker
Yeah, very good. Thank you very much. sha It's been a long day of recording for the Daily Newcastle team, but we're here, we're ready. And hopefully we're going to be talking about a very exciting game at the weekend. I think it will be. Yeah, there's been a bit of, guess, people are trying out new like podcast schedules. So yeah, everyone knows we are a new podcast. So please give us a review and share on your socials.
00:00:40
Speaker
as that would be much appreciated.

Newcastle vs Top Teams Review

00:00:43
Speaker
So I thought to start we'd have a little bit of a Newcastle focus so that Brentford listeners maybe like can get more of a sense of what's been happening with you guys. So as we've seen you've managed to compete against the big teams, beat both Arsenal and Spurs and which I'm happy about because like everyone at work Don't know, it's not even North London, they all just support Arsenal and Spurs. It's like, come on. But we're happy to help any way that we can, particularly if it involves Arsenal and Spurs. No, it's good. It's us good. And yeah, you also held City to a draw, but I mean, City also haven't been doing that last time.
00:01:22
Speaker
Yeah, it doesn't look like a good result anymore. It was cracking at the time. but Yeah, at the time it was really good. I guess that's in part due to Isaac probably. But I guess i've I've just seen as well that he obviously went off against Magnus, but he seems to be saying that he's fit to play against Liverpool. So we should be seeing him then, like, unless something happens.
00:01:46
Speaker
yeah Just on Isaac, he's one of those players that once he gets a knock, he'll continue to play. Eddie Howe will continue to play him and at the weekend. We saw Callum Wilson wasn't ready yet to play um um or at least come on for 70 minutes. So Isaac will definitely start if he's available to do even 45 minutes against Liverpool.
00:02:06
Speaker
But what we found in the past is that usually makes the injury a lot worse. So we could be going into the game with, I don't know, William or Sue Lara or Anthony Gordon

Newcastle's Inconsistencies and Player Attitudes

00:02:15
Speaker
up front and against you. But I'm going to pray that's not the case.
00:02:19
Speaker
I probably won't be praying for the same thing. it's understandable So how crucial would you say he's been? Like obviously you said you obviously want him to be there on Saturday. Do you think he's played like a big part? And I guess, yeah, you've been really good against some of the top six teams. Do you think that's in part a lot due to him? Yeah, I think It's one of those that I think Newcastle's attitude really comes out and I'll be honest we've got a history, particularly this season, well potentially of being naive against clubs that we would maybe deem lesser which sounds horrible. I don't go into any game thinking it's lesser whether it's going to be Bromley who we've got in the FA Cup yeah or, you know, Man City. But it's one of those that you can really see the difference in levels from players such as Alexander Rizak, when we play against the likes of Arsenal, fighting for every ball against Arsenal, but then against Crystal Palace at the weekend. ah He barely had a sniff and that wasn't made, that wasn't down to the fantastic play from the Crystal Palace defenders. It just didn't really seem that the attitude was right. Now he went off with an injury.
00:03:32
Speaker
Maybe that's something that was you know there from before the game.

Brentford's Home Record and Challenges

00:03:36
Speaker
And against West Ham, it does have to be said, he was very agile, moved well. Finishing wasn't quite on point. But to be honest, this season, we we haven't seen the best of alex Alexander Isaac. Yeah. And like talking about the West Ham game as well, like why were you there? Were you at some games pop?
00:03:54
Speaker
I wasn't for the Monday night. was flying away with work through the week so it was one of those I didn't manage to to get to. It's probably a good thing you didn't say it. Yes. Unfortunately, managed to sort of watch the game, but it was one of those were looking at it. I thought we were so good in the first 30 minutes attacking. But we just make, we make a few too many silly mistakes in defense. It was like Kelly's first start for a long time. And he's just been caught ball watching or should I say player watching yeah from a corner and you know, where we're pretty poor at that. And well, I know, particularly Brent fed at home.
00:04:32
Speaker
These are pretty much good at everything at home, so it's going to be difficult. yeah um'm guess yeah I was going to say talk about this as well. We've got the best time record in Europe in a minute. I'm not scared about that at all. I'm very scared.
00:04:51
Speaker
I know you were saying that in your gaming games West Ham, it was like by the second half that you like seemed to just drop in form. I'd say that's something we have also struggled with. Also, we get to have a like, despite our excellent record at home, haven't had a clean sheet, which is obviously something to worry about. I think we're past our one minute opening goals.
00:05:16
Speaker
that me So I think you're out in the clear for that but I'd definitely say because I was at the game on Saturday when we won at Leicester and that was some of our best football I think we've played in a while. so It was a 4-1, wasn't it? Sharda got the hat-trick. Honestly, if you'd have talked to me before, of all our players, I'm sorry, I would not think that he'd get a hat-trick. I think he was struggling to adapt to the Premier League, but obviously I think this would be like wonders for his confidence. Yeah, I think made his debut, I think, as a substitute against Newcastle. It might have been one of his first games.
00:05:55
Speaker
And remember Brentford on that day in the first half, he was particularly poor. But as soon as he came on, I can't remember who got injured, but he's pace. You know what I mean? We've got Dan Byrne, for example, at the back. I think he was left back that day. And he looked incredible. So I was sitting there thinking, he's going to be a real gem. he's still young. and But i think do you think at the weekend, you know, you sort of sort of side of Charlotte that you didn't know was there or that just hasn't been unlocked yet?
00:06:23
Speaker
Well, I think everyone obviously knew that they saw potential in him. I think he had not been good at finishing before, like at all. And then to get a hat trick, obviously, and they were all pretty good finishes. So yeah definitely because as you said, the pace, I think sometimes he's just maybe needs to stop and think a little bit more and starting to do that. So that's obviously like really good to see.
00:06:50
Speaker
So do you think that Newcastle can aim for Europe that season?

Newcastle's European Ambitions and Reinforcements

00:06:56
Speaker
But there's been like really good moments so far. I mean it's early days. but yeah what i would What I would argue is we haven't seen Newcastle at their best this season. Whether that's down to Eddie Howe, I'd like to say it's not, cause I think he's done wonders with us so far and he definitely deserves, you know, the time to, to make what we've had this season, you know, go right. But I just, I think it is a case of when we play against a low block, we can't really break them down. We really struggle. And if we can get that right or bring in a player in January,
00:07:33
Speaker
who maybe a number nine, a number 10, should I say, or a a right winger who's particularly good at at um negating those low blocks, then Newcastle can make Europe. I think top six. I mean, we're only a couple i think we're only a couple of points off Europe as it stands.
00:07:49
Speaker
yeah and no Newcastle fan will tell you they've been happy with how the season started. So Europe's definitely realistic, but at the same time, Brentford looked just as likely to make Europe than Newcastle do at the minute. So it could be literally anyone from that top, what, 13, 14.
00:08:05
Speaker
I think because that's only but at the minute there's only one point separating us. I think you're only four from Europe. So yeah, there's obviously all to play for still. Talking of cups as well, we're obviously going to meet again this time at St James's Park.

Cup vs League: What's More Important?

00:08:19
Speaker
What is it, two weeks after Saturday? so Yeah, it's something like the 19th. So yeah, about that. yeah Which I'll be honest, I'm a lot more confident for than the away game. but used no just as well your away form hasn't been fantastic neither is ours both pretty decent at home so yeah yeah i don't know if i mean i'll ask you this now actually it might be something you've got planned but would you prefer the three points in the league or to advance in the cup i'm gonna say to advance in the cup just because i think like i was talking
00:09:00
Speaker
to and people about this before. I think it's about time we have like a victory in breakfast. And I don't know when else it's going to come. But the other, obviously, well, I've been away at St. James's Park when we've done like completely awfully. And I know how hard it is to do that. So I'm not that hopeful. that is going to be this season. But yeah, I would like us to win a Cup at some point, like, and I think that this season is not looking like we're at risk of allegations. So it's not the best for those three points. But we'll see. We'll see. So after a break, we'll talk a bit more about like our last meetings and then get into the all important score predictions. Every club

Key Players and Defensive Concerns

00:10:59
Speaker
Okay so we're back and um thought I'd start off with a scary statistic for Brentford listeners there. i Newcastle, ah ah well you guys have won in seven out of our last nine meetings, one of which, one of the other nine was a draw and then a Yeah, I think, oh yeah, we must have won one, don't remember that. But I'm just trying to do the maths there, my brain won't look dead. But yeah, um and so yeah, obviously, you guys are a strong side. And I think that Brentford, even though we have been like really, really good at home,
00:11:39
Speaker
I think we do also, as I said before, no clean sheets. We do tend to make some silly mistakes or we're just not there in the second half sometimes. So I think, yeah, there's obviously it's not we can't just assume that we're going to win again on the weekend. and ah but But I was going to say as well, what Brentford players do you think will be the toughest for you guys to face on Saturday? I mean, it's easy to say the player that we've rue will rue meds to have wanted in this in the summer, Brian and Buermo. Annoyingly, would have probably took him even before Ivan Tony left. so Even before last season, he looked like a fantastic player. And I think he really is the danger man. Obviously, Kevin Chadd is goingnna be he's going to be the most confident we've probably ever seen him. But after a few
00:12:32
Speaker
let's say, lacks a days ago, defending efforts in recent games from crosses and corners. I think the two centre backs, I don't know who it's going to be that plays on the day, because we've got a few, Vanderbilt, et cetera, that, you know, I've got a feeling whoever your biggest aerial presence is at the back might be the one that nips in with the goal. We saw it with Marillo, Nottingham Forest, and since then, we've looked quite weak from set pieces.
00:13:00
Speaker
So yeah, I'm worried about Brentford from a a set piece perspective, but if we're looking at sort of from open play, I mean, you've scored more goals than anyone from open play this season. It has to be Brian and Buermer. Yeah. I'd say definitely from a fan perspective, when Tony left, we obviously we were worried like he was our main man at the front, but Yeah, it was actually pretty good timing and obviously his band that you don't like to talk about. It obviously gave Brian and Whissa a chance to step up announcing like the likes of Kevin and things like that. So yeah, I think
00:13:46
Speaker
them to at the front and unfortunately right after Whistle was at Albert and now he's back he seems completely fine. So I think yeah from a fan perspective it's gone since Tony left like if anything it's gone way better than any of us thought probably.

Changing Perceptions of Newcastle Players

00:14:03
Speaker
But I think Thomas Rank he probably knew this all along I seem to know these things so yeah I'd say from um Brentford perspective obviously we talked about Isaac his big threat and as I said with our defensive issues and our mistakes and even though we won on last week against Leicester
00:14:23
Speaker
um um I had some questions about that. And I think also Barnes as well. I've noticed a lot of talk about him and he seems to be. ah ah Yeah, someone I didn't really notice before, but a bit of a threat as well. Yeah, for for Newcastle with Barnes, he was out for most of last season. It looked at the start of the season like Barnes was going to be with star player.
00:14:50
Speaker
had He didn't start that many games, but as soon as he came on, he was scoring goals off the bench, et cetera. It looks a really dangerous presence. I would would say with Barnes, the last few games, in fact, I'll say this, when Harvey Barnes plays, he either scores and plays really, really well, or he does absolutely abysmally. There's no in-between. And I'm sure you yeah you've probably had players like that in the past yourselves.
00:15:17
Speaker
but you know you'll you'll do nothing for 70 minutes and then ah just like wolves when we beat them 2-1, he'll bang one in from the 30 yards or whatever, top corner, nothing anyone can do and all of a sudden he looks like a miracle worker. yeah, I think EZAC and Barnes alongside Gordon, Gordon will probably play on the right. I would probably i agree, they'll probably be our main danger men, given the way I think the game will shape out. I can't lie, one player that I root dislike is
00:15:47
Speaker
gorous to be honest everyone does and we did as well until he joined us yeah so at Everton every single Newcastle fan hated Anthony Gordon and then when he joined he didn't really show the work ethic to begin with the Newcastle fans were like why have we paid 45 million for for this guy and then to be honest he's worked really hard is yeah and he' he has took the diving out of his game to a point He still goes down a little too easy for my liking. He still I think every winger goes down a little too easy. Even with VAR. But I think it's also one of those that he is becoming a lot better player and he is becoming more likeable. But if you look at him from Everton, I think a lot of people's opinions are just set in stone because yeah he was arguably the most hated player on the planet then.
00:16:46
Speaker
umly like I think it will take a lot for him to change my perception from back then. I can't blame you to be fair.

Match Predictions: Brentford vs Newcastle

00:16:53
Speaker
Yeah so also I guess we'll move on to score predictions and I can't lie I've been pretty successful with them recently. so I hope you're predicting a Newcastle win.
00:17:06
Speaker
and I'm going to continue with our excellent home run, and I'm going to say 2-1 to Brentford. Okay, ah to be honest, given the way recent games have gone, I could see it, but I am going to be positive. I'm known for being Mr Negative on the Newcastle team, so I'm trying to change your habit, but I think I'm going to go with a 3-2 win for Newcastle. I think you score a lot of goals, you also concede a lot of goals. And we've seen recently away from home that we can be very attack minded. I think it very much depends on what happens against Liverpool in midweek. Because if we get thrashed at home by Liverpool, we're going to come out with a little bit of a vengeance. And you know, you've mentioned Newcastle versus Brentford in the past.
00:17:59
Speaker
We tend to score quite a lot of goals against Brentford. I think it was 4-2 in the same fixture last season on the final day. So i think I think we'll do well, but to be honest, it's one of those games where you're doing really well at home. We're not doing fantastic away. You could see it being pretty much any score line, which I guess is what makes it so fun. Yeah, that is what makes it fun.
00:18:25
Speaker
Are you travelling down? I mean, it is really far to go, so probably not. No, unfortunately, I won't be coming down to to London this time. But hopefully it's one of the it's one of the grounds I haven't done. So I need to get there at some point.

Memorable Away Day Experiences

00:18:42
Speaker
Because I was going to say, so my final fun question has been recently, what's your favourite away day or an away day story? So I thought I'd share mine. When we lost 5-1, I was actually at St. James's Park in 2022.
00:18:58
Speaker
All right. My auntie took me for my birthday and I, oh, honestly, you know what, I still had a great day because I was like, such a cool stadium and such a good atmosphere. And we just had to laugh at ourselves, to be honest. And then when we were walking out, we went to get a pizza and had our breakfast shirts peeking out. But all these nice Jordies were saying, don't worry, it happens to the best of us. If anyone knows anything about getting battered,
00:19:26
Speaker
It's us. We've had Mike Ashley in for years. We used to go to Liverpool or Man United and go, please only before. So, yeah, we know exactly how it feels. And I hope you found Newcastle quite hospitable.
00:19:40
Speaker
as a place, do think the Newcastle fans are great at that. So I've had many nights out and then late night Greggs, which I respect so much, like everyone's late night Greggs. But yeah, I thought that was, while I was here, I had to obviously go to an away day. But did you have any away day stories you wanted to share or favourite away day moments?
00:20:03
Speaker
Yeah, I think my favorite that I've been to was actually when we were in the championship. I went to quite a lot of away games that season. And yeah I mean, we we ended up finished top of the table, so I enjoyed a lot of them. yeah But the one in particular was Leeds. So Leeds is a club. There's always that little, oh well, they're northern, we're northern. There's a little bit of a rivalry. And I've got a lot of leads. I will say that all Brentford. Fantastic. This is going to sound really good.
00:20:33
Speaker
yeah And I went down with a couple of friends. I have a few friends there that were Leeds fans as well. before the game it was all, oh, you're going to get battered. We're going to win the league. we're goingnna And then 20 minutes in, the ball comes over, a rob green typical Rob Green fashion. He drops it on the goal line. And just from the first moment,
00:20:54
Speaker
Newcastle fans, a bit of rivalry, literally. I'm not sure if you've been to Ellen Road, but the least the away fans are there, home fans are there right next to them. So it's always always probably a great atmosphere, but it was just one of those that before, during and after the game, every Leeds fan I met was just so angry. and There's nothing better than angry football fans.
00:21:16
Speaker
yeah that hungry les fan on the yes ah You were walking through the streets after the game and like found there was p police in between the two fan bases. There was quite a lot of scraps. I don't get involved in that myself, let's be honest. I'd get battered. But just even on the way back, every single Leeds fan just was just trying to give it the big end. I love it when a big club gets a little bit belittled.
00:21:44
Speaker
Honestly, outside of the West London Derby, outside of Fulham, Chelsea, QPR, Leeds is our biggest hate. Something about them, isn't there? Yeah. That's maybe a universal feeling.
