Podcast Introduction

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Newcastle United Podcast with GSPN. My name's Joel, and I'm here to talk all things happiness about Newcastle v Leicester. I'm joined with two of my boys, the OG three as we like to call ourselves. First up, we've got the Don, Mr. Ian McKay. How are you doing?
00:00:29
Iain Mackay the Noo

Global Sports Podcast Network
He's not exactly, he's a windup, a permanent windup. Anyway, as you've just heard, um the other one is obviously the other part of our, I was gonna say three legged there, that's a bit wrong, but yeah, the other part, the OG3, it is, it's just Kev, it's Kev.
00:01:00
Kev
Yeah, just Kev.
00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hiya, you all right?
00:01:01
Kev
I'll take just Kev. Yeah, I mean, we've we've got six
00:01:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
You can't be the third leg, dude. You can't.

Weekly Football Highlights

00:01:05
Kev

00:01:06
Kev
That's fine.
00:01:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh my god.
00:01:06
Kev
We haven't got three legs. It's fine.
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh dear god.
00:01:10
Iain Mackay the Noo
F, what does your OG stand for, Kev?
00:01:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway.
00:01:13
Kev
um Original gangster.
00:01:16
Iain Mackay the Noo
Well, original gangster.
00:01:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now I was told.
00:01:19
Iain Mackay the Noo
What about mike but about Michael's?
00:01:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
The original girl.
00:01:22
Kev
Original greenhouse law.
00:01:26
Iain Mackay the Noo
I was going to say original grump.
00:01:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
bi ma be me
00:01:30
Iain Mackay the Noo
Hello, Michael. Happy Sunday evening to you, mate.
00:01:33
Kev
Oi, oi, oi.
00:01:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
we all love him man he loves a good rip right I'll tell you what should we move on because otherwise we're just gonna go down a road that there's no return um can we talk about yesterday people all Saturday as we're now gonna be listening on Monday yeah so basically we were brilliant we've wanted this to happen for months let's not exaggerate um again so-called smaller teams
00:01:50
Kev
Absolutely.
00:01:53
Iain Mackay the Noo
Are we here for?
00:01:53
Kev
and
00:02:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
lower bottom half teams whatever you want to refer to them as but yeah look the lads turned up man didn't they we turned up to a point i'll be honest i think the lads were better than us at points because i thought the atmosphere was not as great as liverpool i'll be first to point that one out however it's more like i think as the game kind of grew the fans kind of grew and it all just rolled into one but i'm not going to talk about as fans i'm purely talking about the players and i move um over the moon with pretty much all of them, I've got to be honest. We all know how much I love Murphy so I had an absolute fit up on the stands when he scored his first one.
00:02:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
pretty much followed by his second one as well but um I'm just so happy for the lad because to me he's one of those players that he's not our so-called superstar players like Gordon and stuff so when he does do amazing things I think it just means that little bit more and because he is you know a Toon fan for life again it means that little bit more as well doesn't it um but that kind of leads me into asking sorry go on
00:02:58
Iain Mackay the Noo
It's not the first. Oh, I was just going to say, it's not the first game where Jacob Murphy's appearance on the right wing has really benefited the team. I think it gives us way more balance than what we're trying to crowbar Anthony Gordon or Harvey Barnes down there.
00:03:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
I agree.
00:03:13
Iain Mackay the Noo
and ah Fair play to Murphy.
00:03:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:03:16
Iain Mackay the Noo
He scored two good goals. He missed four other good ones as well, but you know, on of everything. And scoring twice, it's only the second time that he's scored two goals in a game.
00:03:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that's why he's not a superstar player, is he? That's what I'm kind of leaning towards. Mm-hmm.
00:03:29
Iain Mackay the Noo
Can you remember the other the time?
00:03:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Strange enough, Ian, you've just teed up the right to the end of the pod, because I was going to ask that question.
00:03:31
Kev
That's a great question.
00:03:35
Kev
i
00:03:37
Iain Mackay the Noo
so Sorry, you've already done the research.
00:03:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yes, of course I remember, Ian. It's fine.
00:03:41
Iain Mackay the Noo
i askha I'll shut up and move on.
00:03:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no, Kev, go on answer it.
00:03:44
Iain Mackay the Noo
am
00:03:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Cause I obviously know it anyway, but I knew this. If you remember, Kev's going to remember as well. Surely when was Murphy's only ever brace in your castle?
00:03:52
Kev
I don't know.
00:03:53
Iain Mackay the Noo
Both in the first 10 minutes, Kev, you'll get it now.
00:03:53
Kev
how um um think
00:03:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not long ago at all.
00:04:00
Kev
Not long ago, what this season?
00:04:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Big win.
00:04:03
Iain Mackay the Noo
No.
00:04:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
No last season.
00:04:06
Kev
Wasn't Villa, was it?
00:04:06
Iain Mackay the Noo
Think of how many matches.
00:04:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no previous season.
00:04:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
There we go.
00:04:11
Kev
Oh, Ah, yeah.
00:04:11
Iain Mackay the Noo
There you go. I'm sorry, Joe.
00:04:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah it's all right it was really a two it was a two question quiz and now i've got one question left it's great should we do the pod in reverse order it's fine we can reverse the pod now it is it does i absolutely agree
00:04:13
Iain Mackay the Noo
Did I spoil it? Did this spoil your quiz?
00:04:18
Iain Mackay the Noo
All right. Okay. I'll see if I can ask you the I'll see if I can ask you that question before the end, though. Sorry. No, but well done, Jacob Murphy. That was what I was saying. Jacob Murphy gives us far more balance going down the right. He should be rewarded for that. I still don't think he makes my top three in the game, though, even though he scored twice. He wouldn't be in my top three.
00:04:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
He didn't, but again, um we're doing this pod in reverse. So what I was going to do, people, but we're going to talk about things we'll have most of our yesterday, but we're not.
00:04:47
Kev
Mm-mm.
00:04:47
Iain Mackay the Noo
so
00:04:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're going to talk about that at the end because Ian has absolutely flipped my whole plan um on its backside.
00:04:55
Iain Mackay the Noo
I'm sorry, didn't mean to.
00:04:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's fine, Ian. I don't mind. You know, I like a bit of winging it.
00:05:00
Iain Mackay the Noo
Okay.
00:05:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
So what we're going to do is we're going to wing it, but I'm going to ask you that one and only other question I was going to do for the quiz at the end. see who can get it first. So obviously we've done the Murphy one. The other one goes back to Bruno. so Bruno's last goal was at um sorry last call at home was also a header on the 27th of April, 2024. Who is it against?
00:05:21
Kev
Lester.
00:05:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
no Nope.
00:05:23
Kev
No.
00:05:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
His last goal as in not the one that's just happened on Saturday obviously. His previous one is that at home.
00:05:29
Iain Mackay the Noo
Was that his goal when he ran round the back?
00:05:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a James's Park.
00:05:31
Iain Mackay the Noo
and Was it when he ran round the back and scored the header against Brentford?
00:05:33
Kev
Oh, yeah. The free kick of a corner, whatever it was. Yeah.
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was 27th of April, 2024. It was his last home, the last time he scored in at St. James's Park was also ahead of who's it against. You haven't said the right answer yet.
00:05:48
Iain Mackay the Noo
ah freedom
00:05:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Don't Google it, people.
00:05:52
Iain Mackay the Noo
the Southampton.
00:05:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, you're kinda on the, there we go.
00:05:56
Iain Mackay the Noo
Sheffield United.
00:05:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was gonna say you're on the right track with the colours there. Cool, right. So yeah, that was the quiz you see.
00:06:03
Iain Mackay the Noo
I was just trying to remember how many teams we put four or five best last year.
00:06:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mint that, isn't it?
00:06:08
Iain Mackay the Noo
Anyway, sorry, we got it.
00:06:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
think you sco was it the second goal or something of the game or something wasn't it or something like that i think i remember rightly it was like a 4-2 or something stupid like that anyway yeah doesn't matter quiz over well done um so what i was gonna ask in that last part which we're now doing now yeah top three from yesterday because it is a struggle isn't it we've just been talking about how great the kind of team was and how much we kind of well we were before the pod started anyway um
00:06:14
Iain Mackay the Noo
I'll picture it.
00:06:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm gonna go in with mine, I'll give it first and I'll see, but yeah, as much as I love Murphy, I love what he did yesterday, I'm not gonna put him in my top three for yesterday. So I'm gonna do it in no particular order, because I actually can't decide, but my top three are Gordon, Tenali, and Hall.
00:06:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
So with complete silence, I'm gonna go to Kev next.
00:06:55
Iain Mackay the Noo
a No.
00:07:02
Kev
I probably, I agree with Hall and Tonali, I think they were brilliant.
00:07:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who's yours if you're gonna pick three?
00:07:06
Kev
And then I'm stuck between, I thought Bruno was so good, there was a couple of passes in the EZAC. And I just thought, God, I love playing further forward. Cause when Bruno's played kind of more than eight, he's got two assists against Liverpool and a goal against Leicester.
00:07:22
Kev
and But then I'm tempted to give it to Jacob Murphy, four goals in his last, or four goal contributions in his last two games. I'm going to go Hall, Tonali, and yeah, Bruno. Bruno was really good at fault.
00:07:38
Iain Mackay the Noo
Interesting. I can't argue with Hall. I can't argue with Tenali. He looks class at number six, doesn't he?
00:07:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:07:46
Iain Mackay the Noo
And if if it frees Bruno up to play some of those balls, fantastic.
00:07:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
He certainly does.
00:07:51
Iain Mackay the Noo
Even ne'er Joe Linton played a fabulous ball through from Tenali, turned, put it through.
00:07:56
Kev
It did.
00:07:58
Iain Mackay the Noo
Ezak should have scored.
00:07:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:07:59
Iain Mackay the Noo
There's my, my third man is Alex Ezak. He was unplayable for the time he was on the pitch, I thought.
00:08:05
Kev
Yeah, he was very good.
00:08:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was.
00:08:07
Iain Mackay the Noo
He scored a pretty ordinary goal. He should have scored a few more, I think.
00:08:13
Iain Mackay the Noo
But what he's running at, the Leicester centre-halves, he teed up Murphy, and actually, it looked like he blasted it over the bar, but it was actually a really, really good save.
00:08:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Much better on ya.
00:08:24
Iain Mackay the Noo
The ref didn't see that it was saved.
00:08:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:08:26
Iain Mackay the Noo
But then, two minutes later, that's where that created Murphy's second goal.
00:08:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:08:32
Iain Mackay the Noo
And Isaac, in that mood, is
00:08:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Oh, it is.
00:08:35
Iain Mackay the Noo
That's the 100 million player that Arsenal want. Not the guy stood on the wing, whinging, which we saw at Crystal Palace.
00:08:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:08:43
Iain Mackay the Noo
But hey, this is a positive podcast.
00:08:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is.
00:08:46
Iain Mackay the Noo
That's the form he's in now.
00:08:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
No negativity. We're good. We're good.
00:08:50
Iain Mackay the Noo
Of course, Isaac was unplayable at certain times yesterday, I thought.
00:08:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
it was. But that's why I think the top three is interesting because I think if you speak to so many people, I think people, it yeah I struggled because I hadn't just picked three because I thought it's going to be a rule obviously, but that's what's great about Saturday. Like it was such a great team game. Majority, if not pretty much all of them had I mean, Hall was just outstanding again, man.
00:09:14
Kev
Yeah.
00:09:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like he said to Gnarly in that position, which we'll touch on again in a minute, by the way. But yeah, there's just so many aspects and so many different people that we could have picked. So it's quite good that in a way we've kind of all settled on two of the same and then we've just swapped out the third.
00:09:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, it'd be interesting, I think, to ask a lot of people who their top three would be from yesterday, because I think it will differ a lot because we want a lot of them more great.
00:09:28
Iain Mackay the Noo
I think we've think you've got to do a mention for Dan Byrne.
00:09:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm hmm.
00:09:38
Iain Mackay the Noo
Not only solid as a rock, I mean the whole of the defence was good. They never gave up a chance. and Because that was the same start to a match we had against Brighton.
00:09:44
Kev
the
00:09:47
Iain Mackay the Noo
The same start that we had against West Ham. It was just that we had a defensive lapse and went behind and then fell to pieces. If we'd let Leicester score after 15 minutes, who knows how that game would have turned out.
00:09:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:09:59
Iain Mackay the Noo
but they never put a foot wrong. And I noticed that Byrne is an integral part of how how much we go up the left-hand side. He's very quick to get that ball out to Hall and he steps up to take it back on the inside as well.
00:10:13
Iain Mackay the Noo
So who would have thought that Dan Byrne would be part of our attacking machine, but he is. He's an integral part of it.
00:10:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
is
00:10:20
Iain Mackay the Noo
Hall and Gordon start to look like they've got some sort of telepathic understanding. um And I think Joe Lyndon was in there as well. um doing his thing with them as well so I think it looks very good if they can if they needed a rocket at the backside to play like that against a lesser team then I suggest any rocket upper backside session every Saturday morning and
00:10:46
Kev
I think to be fair Bruno, people questioned Bruno as a captain but I think I said it on a previous pod before we left the game that There was harsh conversations and Bruno came out and said, like, our friendship doesn't get in my way of home truths.
00:10:57
Kev
And again, we don't know what really happened, but there was, you know, a lot of reporters saying Bruno had some harsh words for the team. He gets loads of stick for being captain and everyone said it's affecting his performance and stuff.
00:11:07
Kev
But I actually think it was a lot of good things as Bruno's captain, which nobody mentioned. So he definitely deserves a little bit of recognition for probably stepping in at the right time after that disappointing ah game against Brentford.
00:11:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:19
Kev
and and I think he just looks unbelievable as number eight. i Him, Tenali and Jolynn have finally gelled.
00:11:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:24
Kev
I said it would happen. I said it would take patience.
00:11:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
who Do it, Kev, do it.
00:11:27
Kev
I'm not that I told you so type person, but I did tell everybody. um it was it was It was patience. It was just, we need a patience and now we're complaining. I did it against Liverpool, I've done it against Leicester and before anybody answers, Tenali didn't start against Printford.
00:11:42
Kev
and So yeah with the last two games we've all started together it looks like touch wood we might have finally learned how to play the together.
00:11:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
They have so I'm going to stop you there because I'm going to ask for an ad off Ian because that will as we love to say segue us into the exact conversation that I was going to bring up about Tenali and Bruno in their position so go for it Ian please with the first ad.
00:12:06

Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you very much Ian. Nice and cool and calm as always. um Right. Segue in as we do into the next part. So again going back to front we are in the middle part of it so I was naturally going to talk about Bruno going as a more forward roll. Tenali sitting as our six. We've all talked about how many times of when they've you know up until now, obviously, how they're going to work together. They don't even know where they want to be. One of them sits back. The other one goes forward. They're constantly switching.
00:13:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
For the first time this season, we saw it work perfectly, absolutely harmoniously. um Whether this is something that they've now been almost told in training, because you've got to assume at some point Eddie's got to hold them and be like, look, this is what we're going to have to do, guys. There's no more switching it up. There's no more kind of, you might go forward one second, you do the next. So now all he needs to be on number six.
00:13:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bruno needs to have that more kind of free-forward role. He's just so much more effective, I think. Don't get us wrong, he can play the sixth role, obviously, and this is the kind of problem that we did have, didn't we? Because they are very similar players, but to see them work so brilliantly on Saturday, that's now the solution. That's now got to be what they do moving forward, um who then plays alongside them, whether it's Big Joe, which is obviously the preference, Joe Willick, Longstaff, all that's obviously going to be on availability and all that sort of thing, isn't it really? But you've got to assume that Big Joe is the one. And it was a funny one because, you know, when you see the team sheet coming out and you saw the three of them in the middle, I said, I can't remember who I said it to. I think it was my mate, Leanne, because I was still waiting for everyone else to join us in the club. And I was like, oh, I was like, this is going to be it. I was like, like,
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
this is going to be the like the day i don't know i feel like this is going to be the time that the three of them work i don't know whether i was doing it out of share i hope because it hadn't worked so far but it worked so fantastic um kev obviously i know you've just touched a bit on it so ian i'll come to you what's your thoughts i mean i'm assuming you do agree but yeah what's your thoughts on kind of to gnarly sitting on r6 and bruno going forward more yeah
00:14:45
Iain Mackay the Noo
Yeah, I thought ah thought the signs were there against Liverpool. I think it worked pretty well against Liverpool, to be fair. But what I had said a week or two ago was that I thought that maybe p Bruno, having been our main central midfield man at number six or number eight for the last couple of years, maybe he just needs to actually let go of that to allow Tenali, to trust Tenali, to be able to be secure at the back.
00:15:11
Iain Mackay the Noo
and focus on getting a bit further forward. And it does look as if he's doing that now, because, yeah, they were there were a lot of there were a lot of 10, 15

Middlesex Forum Insights

00:15:21
Iain Mackay the Noo
yard balls from Tenali to Bruno who turned and spread it or put a through ball through or knocked it out wide.
00:15:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:15:28
Iain Mackay the Noo
And I like that. The main problem of this first part of the season for me watching them has been the tortuously slow progression of the ball when we've run it back in our half to get it up to their box. That's because all the balls have been sideways and not all of them, 95% of the balls have been sideways or backwards. And there were there weren't very many like that on Saturday. People were looking up and knocking the ball forward. And I think that's i think that's because they've got to start trusting each other. Maybe Bruno's cleared the air with his harsh words to everybody.
00:16:08
Iain Mackay the Noo
But um I much prefer watching Newcastle at home with that aggressive front foot mindset. Let's hope that they can do it to the smaller teams away from home.
00:16:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:21
Iain Mackay the Noo
You know, that's that's what that's what your matches to cities and your Liverpool's do.
00:16:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:25
Iain Mackay the Noo
They attack every game in the same way and they tend to win them all.
00:16:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not quite sitting right now.
00:16:29
Iain Mackay the Noo
Not a like city right now, no. Well, I think that's a bit of an aberration, to be honest. but
00:16:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Massive.
00:16:35
Iain Mackay the Noo
I've talked with them over the last five years, that's the way they approach every game.
00:16:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:38
Iain Mackay the Noo
And everybody expects Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City to win whether they're playing at home or away, because generally they do.
00:16:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:16:47
Iain Mackay the Noo
That's down to the mindset of how they approach it.
00:16:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I'll be honest, just bang on, I'll be honest. But another thing, Kev, I can come back to you in a second. So I don't know if you've got more to say about the Bruno and Tenali thing, but I'll kind of tee you up for all of it and you can talk about all of it. Um, was the Hall and Gordon combination on the left. Cause like I said, Gordon was in my top three along with Hall. And I just think they are so brilliant together. They've got, they've made such a fantastic partnership down the left.
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I think it does stand out. I know we've talked about Gordon Clay on the right sometimes and this that and the other but we all know he is best on the left but he works beautifully with Hall and Hall is much like I don't know why we've talked about it being like a back three and having Tino and Hall more is like wing backs because they they do like to push forward, don't they?
00:17:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it works so well in conjunction with what Gordon can do for the team as well. So we witnessed that yesterday as well. So again, just a, just an all around kind of fantastic performance from them too, but you go loose on that one now.
00:17:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
What's your overall thoughts on all four of those people?
00:17:47
Kev
Well, being in the mood of saying I told you so.
00:17:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
who
00:17:52
Kev
I think, you know what Eddie and Jason and Bruno and everybody came under scrutiny for him. I'm still going to say a small minority of fans because I don't want to give them too much credit or mentions on a on a positive podcast.
00:18:04
Kev
But they got it right. Look, we scored from a corner, right, which everyone was banging on about three ages. We haven't scored from a corner. It was something new. It was creative. Gordon with the overlap and then the pullback to Murphy. Brilliant. Love to see it. And then we scored from a free kick.
00:18:20
Kev
when Hall's put it kind of back across, I think that art was Bruno's goal actually, where they head the bat across the goal mouth and Bruno's tapping in.
00:18:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah hurt
00:18:27
Kev
So we've scored from a free kit, with we have we've clearly been working butts off, I say we we haven't, but Eddie and Tinder and the players have clearly been working their butts off and trading on set pieces because we've scored off two of them.
00:18:39
Kev
Then we've said it from Day Dot pretty much on this podcast of Hall didn't play very much last year, so it's going to take him time to get annoying teammates in jail. Same with Tenali, same with these players. And Barnes was one of them ones we put in there and it's finally coming good. Like you said, Hall and Gordon, like we're finally clicking and I think it's time to give.
00:18:59
Kev
and's No surprise, this is coming from me. But where all these fans give Howard Tindall the credit, then, because we've we've worked our butts off on free kicks, we've worked our butts off on corners.
00:19:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
yep
00:19:08
Kev
Tenali and Bruno are finally playing together. Hall and Gordon have a partnership now down the left, which looks promising.
00:19:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:19:14
Kev
So where is all the comments on social media of, you know what?
00:19:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm hmm.
00:19:18
Kev
Fair play. We haven't been great recently, but we've clearly been working really hard to put it right. And again, don't get me wrong, it was Leicester and I'm hoping this wasn't just a reaction to Brentford and we go back to normal.
00:19:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:30
Kev
I hope it sticks now and I hope it's right.
00:19:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm hmm.
00:19:33
Kev
We've we've learned our lessons from previous where we've beat Arsenal and Chelsea but then lost to whoever was next. I can't remember for top man, I'm trying to wipe it off. I think we beat Forest and lost to Brighton or West Ham.
00:19:44
Kev
So look, we have to learn from it and we have to make sure we are consistent going forward. But it's football, isn't it? quick Critics are always louder than anybody who's willing to praise anybody, but I think we've worked tirelessly to get it right.
00:19:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
True.
00:19:56
Kev
Go on, Ian.
00:19:58
Iain Mackay the Noo
I was just going to say, I agree entirely. I nearly butted in to say, let's not forget this was Leicester and they were woeful. They really were appalling. um Like I said, you know, if they had had something about them, like a bow and about them or a, and or the Brighton forward line about them, where they could have made a break and scored, it could have been different. It could have been ah the same performance as those losses and where we get knocked off our stride, but they they didn't threaten at all.
00:20:29
Iain Mackay the Noo
Um.
00:20:30
Kev
But were we not just really good?
00:20:30
Iain Mackay the Noo
Dubravka should have got.
00:20:32
Kev
Because Leicester beat West Ham 3-1 at home and we drew a Brighton 2-2.
00:20:33
Iain Mackay the Noo
Oh yeah, yeah.
00:20:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll say that, Kev. Yeah.
00:20:38
Kev
We beat West Ham, we didn't beat West Ham at home, we beat West Ham at home 3-1.
00:20:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm hmm.
00:20:40
Iain Mackay the Noo
No, well, ah alongside what I'm saying, Kev, alongside what I'm saying, Kev, I know that we got one point out of six last year from Luton.
00:20:41
Kev
We were in good form.
00:20:50
Kev
Yeah.
00:20:50
Iain Mackay the Noo
Uh, and I don't want to go through the the disappointing home draws that we went through last year. I've already lived them. I don't want to go through him again. But yeah, so I just reserve judgment that this is not just a flash in the pan and a reaction to to negative comments coming out of the Brentford game.
00:21:07
Kev
Yeah, that's what I hope so.
00:21:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:21:09
Iain Mackay the Noo
I think they've got another opportunity against ah a newly promoted side next week. Let's see how they do that away from home. Because to be honest, you know, on paper, um no, there's not play matches on paper, but on paper, Ipswich is a side that we should be dealing with in the same way as we dealt with Leicester, whether we're playing them at home or away.
00:21:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
blowing them away quite literally, isn't it?
00:21:33
Iain Mackay the Noo
So let's see how we get on with that.
00:21:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, you spot onion. um The real test is next weekend, isn't it? Because I think realistically, and I hope none of us are wrong, obviously, it's not being cocky or anything, but I think everyone expects Wednesday night against Brentford to be very similar to the Leicester game as well, don't we?
00:21:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Even though Brenford away wasn't exactly kind of same team, ironically, but I think a lot more is expected at home. It's as simple as that. However, we can't then go away to Ipswich and just dip massively.
00:22:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
We can't. So that is the real test. We're not naive. We're not stupid. We're loyal to the cause, Jordies. Don't get us wrong. But we're also not daft in the fact that, you know you know, we know what the team are like.
00:22:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have to laugh about sometimes. I think sometimes you just laugh through the pain, don't you, over the years. But like, but like,
00:22:19
Kev
but I was going to say, when you when you look at previous years, Derby County, I think, went down with the lowest points tally ever and beat us.
00:22:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
me over
00:22:27
Kev
It was the only home game I won my season and it was against us.
00:22:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah well didn't the maggums on theirs as well like on their lowest ever scene because they were laughing like yeah course it does of course it does
00:22:30
Kev
It was, yeah, somewhat ridiculous. can you teddny miller Kenny Miller with a volley hits one in five million. I remember Billy Davies was a manager. I was in a pub on holiday going absolutely mental.
00:22:42
Kev
ah awful. So it's got Newcastle like upset written all over it, hasn't it? But let's hope that it's not like, like I said, and like Ian referred to, might you just prefer let's hope, but it's not just a reaction.
00:22:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:53
Kev
And it is now a consistent way forward because if we can be consistent this season, we're still an outside chance.
00:22:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:58
Kev
I mean, everyone forgets champions.
00:22:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know Yep.
00:23:00
Kev
He could be top five. depending on my extra European place and where it goes this year could be top five and we're not a million miles away from fifth and again you look at the state of the league at the minute there's nobody being consistent other than Liverpool who are only semi-consistent so there's just no consistency in my league if we can put a little little run together I think it'll be absolutely fantastic going forward
00:23:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
there' No.
00:23:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll be alright, man. Come on. You know, we always try to stay as positive as ever, don't we, really?
00:23:24
Iain Mackay the Noo
There's still a ton of games.
00:23:24
Kev
and
00:23:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But this, like, well, yeah, sorry, I know even you're just about to say that. There is plenty left, isn't there?
00:23:29
Iain Mackay the Noo
We're three or four points, we're three or four points off the Champions League places, and we've still got everybody, everybody to play again.
00:23:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:37
Kev
Yep.
00:23:37
Iain Mackay the Noo
You know, we're not even halfway through.
00:23:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have.
00:23:39
Iain Mackay the Noo
So yeah, and I'm not thinking it's an outside chance. I still think we're in a group of 10 teams chasing the last two Champions League places, because I'm not sure a city are going to be making it their own.
00:23:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:50
Kev
Yeah fair point.
00:23:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
and We will not be one of the ones that fall away because some will fall away. We're not going to be one of them. But anyway, we're staying positive. We're going to get the last ad out of the way. And then we're going to finish up with what we were going to start with at the start. So Kev, can I have the second ad, please?
00:24:03
Kev
Yeah, keeping it retro with Ian's old advert, I'll go down with the original GSPM one. 00:24:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you very much, Kev. See the OG3 with the OG advert. So.
00:24:37
Kev
That's exactly it. It was planned.
00:24:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
the It was planned, wasn't it? So yeah, how I was going to start the pod is kind of how we're now going to end the pod, but that's fine. It was almost heated up on what we've just been talking about. Anyway, so what I was going to ask you guys is just like your favorite things from yesterday. So what I'm kind of mean about that, I'll give you mine and then you'll see what I'm rambling on

Podcast Promotion

00:24:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
about. So obviously, apart from being overly excited about my boy Murphy getting two,
00:25:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um what i loved about it was in particular coming out and smashing it in the second half because what i did say at halftime when we're 1-0 up i was like what we need to not do right now is do what we've done in the last few games and come out poorly or just like we can't be bothered let's say in the second half i see it's because we are winning we need to keep a hold of this but we need to be a bit stronger because

Italian Serie A Analysis

00:25:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
even Eddie said like we should have really been more than one little bit half-time sort of thing so um we didn't we did smash it so that's definitely one of my kind of favorite aspects of yesterday how we actually got better instead of getting worse so again a massive positive moving forward I would say um we've already talked about so I won't ramble on too much but Tenali and Bruno Jelen was right up there for me but as I said because we're doing this part back to front we've talked about it already so um and the third thing was going to be a bit what Kev's just touched on there
00:25:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
our lads finally doing what we've known they could do the whole time and putting now our frustrations to bed for now because like we've just said we want the real frustrations put to bed against Ipswich for example but coming out you look at our team you talk about teams on paper like you've just said Ian like I'm not gonna use world class because none of our team are because world class is a whole different level to me um but we've got some really top class players on our team And when they play well, look at what they can do. ah Like yesterday. Like against Liverpool. So what we'll need now is just that consistency that we know we can. And I think, if I'm honest, I think that's where the more sensible fans have just been more frustrated than anything else. I try to ignore the idiots out there, but I'll be honest who just spout absolute nonsense or just shout, Eddie, Eddie out. Um, ugh, sack them, sack them, sell them. Like, shut up man, will you? Just have a normal conversation. You can be frustrated with a team. You can be angry at players.
00:26:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because yeah, we know how good they are, but they showed how good they were yesterday. And that's, that was the main thing for me. So that was kind of my happiness overall. It was like just pinpoint little few things, if you know what I mean.
00:26:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
So there's plenty more to say about yesterday. So would you guys pick anything else along the lines of what I've just done, if you know what I mean, as being like your favorite moments or favorite things about the game, if you know what I mean?
00:27:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ian, go.
00:27:10
Kev
Go on in.
00:27:11
Iain Mackay the Noo
sla go first I loved the fact that the game is won after an hour and Eddie's able to take Brudolph, take Gordon off, a little bit later take Isaac off to give them properly rested.
00:27:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:27
Iain Mackay the Noo
So they revved up for the but the Brentford game. What that meant was that we could see Harvey Barnes coming down the right, wondering whether he works on that. He had four shots in the about 20 minutes that he was on for.
00:27:41
Iain Mackay the Noo
one of which was teed up by a very ah muscular, unbelievable young centre-forward called Will Osular, who I thought, I was really pleased he got 20 odd minutes to run out.
00:27:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mmhmm. Mmhmm.
00:27:54
Iain Mackay the Noo
I thought he looked quite good.
00:27:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:27:57
Iain Mackay the Noo
A couple of runs where you think he's second favourite to get to the ball when and he knocked their centre-halves over to be able to to win the ball. So, in compensation,
00:28:11
Iain Mackay the Noo
After an hour, I think, you know, Eddie's took all the good players off, so we're just going to see this game out. I saw lots of little green shoots and glimmers of hope in the players that he brought on.
00:28:23
Iain Mackay the Noo
And I ah felt so sorry for Tenali when he did that little flip over his head and then volleyed and it went into the side netting. It would have been great for that to have been for the fifth goal.
00:28:29
Kev
That would have been unbelievable.
00:28:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wouldn't it?
00:28:32
Iain Mackay the Noo
that He deserved it as well.
00:28:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mmhmm.
00:28:34
Iain Mackay the Noo
um But yeah, so those things after them, after the The jeopardy of the game is finished, if you like, um so you could sit back and relax.
00:28:45
Iain Mackay the Noo
I was really pleased with a number of things, and I do think, you know, certainly against most teams, Otula is ready to take on the Callum Wilson coming on after an hour roll, if we need him.
00:28:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mmhmm.
00:29:00
Kev
Good point.
00:29:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Can I agree?
00:29:01
Kev
and I think for me, it was, I mean, we went for the throat again and we went absolutely killer team, which was nice to say.
00:29:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Kev?
00:29:07
Kev
I know last season we scored the most goals I think we've ever scored in the Premier League season. So I'm not even going to mention the eight nils against Sheffield tonight and all that stuff. but You look at the season before that, when we finished fourth, I'm looking at some of the results now, we beat Everton 4-1, Tottenham 6-1, we beat we beat Fulham 4-1, Brentford 5-1, Villa 4-0,
00:29:31
Kev
4-1 against Southampton and that was the season before last when we didn't have our highest ever goal. So I loved that we scored the second and went for the third. We scored the third, we went for the fourth. We scored the fourth, we did try and get a fifth but by then there was a lot of changes made and we started to think about Wednesday and the quarter-final.
00:29:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
We
00:29:48
Kev
So I loved that we were ruthless again and I loved that we were clinical. I loved that we went for the throat. We didn't just sit deep or anything, we're defensively good enough. I loved that. And I think we've got nine goals in our last three games. So again, even with the last three games, I mean, the Liverpool result was a good one. The Brentford one was terrible. And the Leicester was really good. Emote's not all clicking at the moment. We've scored nine goals in our last three games. That's a sign of the old ADH team. That's a sign of the team last year who got the most goals we ever scored. The team the season before, we've got some end results I've just mentioned.
00:30:17
Kev
um So like I say, I was really, really happy with that. We we didn't just get two or three in love and just think we'll keep the ball or we'll rest. It was like get a fourth, get a fifth, which was really nice to see. That was my biggest happiest moment, so to speak. that It was like the old Newcastle United.
00:30:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was. It's been brilliant to see, hasn't it, really? As I say, um come on, we've got to keep our heads up at this point, keep our tails up and keep positive. Like you say, all these neg heads, as I call them, online or wherever else you want to speak to them, but they're pretty quiet at the minute. It's kind of nice. I did see some absolute idiot, as as you always do, commenting on, it was like the little compilation of Murphy's two goals, and which I was going to share on the socials, but I thought, you know what it is? It'll end up being like done for copywriting or something, so I haven't bothered sharing it.
00:31:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
But anyway, I stupidly clicked on the comments. I don't know why I do it. And there was still a guy, Slayton

Episode Conclusion

00:31:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Murphy, Slayton that he shouldn't be part of the team. And I asked, you know, when you go to reply to someone, I thought, no, Joanne, don't.
00:31:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I just shut my phone down. So I thought, that's going to end up in a massive argument. Like, and I'm going to get myself riled over someone. That's not worth it.
00:31:23
Kev
were slit them around me we were like he was getting he did miss two sitters well not sit as but it on his left foot and he was getting absolutely ummed but I think the players definitely hear it.
00:31:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
But come on, man. But this is where he's, he's a week a foot.
00:31:33
Kev
You look at Anthony Gordon's celebration against Liverpool with the whole keep talking or whatever.
00:31:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:38
Kev
And I think when Jacob Murphy scored his first, he ran into Vigella, gets shouting, what?
00:31:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:41
Kev
And like, pointing to him, he's like, what?
00:31:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:31:42
Kev
Like, tell us again, I'm not good, nothing, because I've scored.
00:31:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exactly.
00:31:44
Kev
So but thought the fact that I say all the time that the fans have a massive impact, and the players definitely hear it.
00:31:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
They're not stupid.
00:31:50
Kev
I think my funniest thing I saw was like a big break in news posts and they said, Lucasinated fans have decided that we want Eddie Hout to stay at the club until we lose the next game and then we'll want them out. And I thought, brilliant.
00:32:02
Kev
That's the best way to look at it. But yeah, made me laugh.
00:32:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's true though, I mean, come on, you've
00:32:05
Iain Mackay the Noo
oh so There were four excellent goals, by the way, and and the groundwork was prepared and and the the chance was created for them to score at least four more brilliant goals.
00:32:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were.
00:32:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:32:20
Iain Mackay the Noo
None of this sort of ball droppin' from a half-tiered corner and a bit of a melee and someone toe poking it in.
00:32:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:32:28
Iain Mackay the Noo
That's what we want. We want them.
00:32:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:32:30
Iain Mackay the Noo
that They're all planned. Those goals are all planned.
00:32:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
They were beautifully.
00:32:33
Iain Mackay the Noo
and it's it's really because because that's setting a challenge for the people that we're playing if we are doing that it's not random that is us in control right the way through to scoring again and again and again and that's what we want
00:32:46
Kev
exactly
00:32:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely agree. I'll be honest, we will wrap it up, but the one thing I want to end on is something that Kev touched on um before earlier. yeah People talk about Lester being poor in that game, or were we just so good that we controlled the game and Lester, as poor as they were, couldn't get into the game at all?
00:33:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's my take on it.
00:33:09
Kev
you'll get Leicester's two previous results before they played us and we've took four points from West Ham and Brighton, two teams who we took zero, but we took zero points, we took zero points from them teams and we've took four so yeah I agree, lester Leicester weren't at their best of course, they weren't, I'm not going to sit here and say Leicester were brilliant because we know they weren't but I think a lot of it is down to how we were set up and how good we were defensively which Ian referred to previously and
00:33:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do what you want with it. but
00:33:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
But... Yeah. We can do it. We can't score.
00:33:17
Iain Mackay the Noo
Yes, thanks.
00:33:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:33:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, no.
00:33:33
Kev
But I think it's right. We don't get carried away. We've seen Newcastle respond to bad results already this season and look really good against Nottingham Forest, look really good against Arsenal and Chelsea and in the Cup.
00:33:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
have.
00:33:44
Kev
So we've seen us respond. We now want to know that this isn't a response and this is now going to be hopefully as close as it can be our consistent level.
00:33:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:33:52
Kev
Because like I say, this is the most unpredictable Premier League in years.
00:33:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. It's been bizarre.
00:33:55
Kev
Anybody can beat anybody this season.
00:33:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's bizarre reasons.
00:33:57
Kev
Our point of way to Bournemouth looks brilliant now. When we first drew the Bournemouth, what on earth should we tell? Bournemouth have beat Arsenal at home, have beat Man City at home. um So that point now looks like a very good point.
00:34:09
Kev
Not many people are going to Bournemouth and taking anything away. So look, it's an unbelievable season.
00:34:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:34:13
Kev
Let's hope we can get an element of consistency now.
00:34:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:34:16
Kev
We're not going to be that good all the time, but can we be close to it? That's the target, I think.
