Match Preview: Newcastle vs. Medford

00:00:02
Speaker
every club every day the global sports podcast network yes hello thank you very much for listening we are the daily ip switch and today i'm very very happy to welcome michael from the daily new castle how are we mate uh very good mate thank you very much how about you yeah not too bad thank you ready for ready for the weekend Well, before the weekend, we've got a tough game tonight as it stands against Medford, although we'll know the result by the time this goes

Newcastle's Confidence Against Brentford

00:00:30
Speaker
out. So yeah I'll either be a very different figure tomorrow, a little bit sad, or hopefully still confident going in ah both tonight and the weekend. Nice. Just a quick one, then, what do you reckon for tonight for yourselves?
00:00:44
Speaker
In our prediction we've gone quite bold. We've said 3-0 and 3-1 wins. That's purely because of how poor Brentford have been away from home. knew the home game would be tough and we said on but um preview podcast for the league game We would take a win in the cup if it meant a loss in the league. um um But that's just being Newcastle. you know We need a cup at some point. We need to win something at some point to have some shred of respect and reputation. But yeah, we're confident, but confidence but yeah we've seen a lot this season that yeah when we're confident doesn't usually

Inconsistency and Team Balance Issues

00:01:20
Speaker
bode well. ah ah Yeah, fair. Well, i was just that was going to be my first point, to be fair. so Obviously, ah we've seen a lot of Newcastle anyway. You you play some really good stuff when you're playing in well.
00:01:29
Speaker
yeah Where is, obviously, but then the inconsistency seems to creep in. and Where do you think that's coming from? Why is that? Because when you look good, you look unbelievable. Because last week, obviously against Leicester, 4-0. Thank you for that, by the way. That's a massive favour for us. and well Anytime. yeah where do Where do you go from there then? Because obviously 4-0, but in other games, yeah inconsistency. Where's that coming from?
00:01:54
Speaker
Yes, I think a large part of it's down to the balance of the team and we've been trying to fit Hans and Anthony Gordon, both into the squad, both natural left wingers. We've tried both of them on the right, we've tried Joel in on the right and then who knew that playing the actual right winger there, Jacob Murphy, not the best player in the world, but it's provided that balance. So yeah, and a large part of it's down to taking chances. So I hate it talking about XG, but there's only one team this season that have beaten us on XG and in the game, and that was Fulham.
00:02:26
Speaker
We've dropped points to Everton, West Ham. i mean Crystal Palace absolutely demolished us, so they should be on that list as well. But the only one that's beaten us and 100% deserved it really was Fulham. And we've lost five think yeah five games, we're not at six just yet. Might be at the weekend though.

Injury Struggles and Squad Depth

00:02:46
Speaker
I'm not going to lie mate, I hope it's six at the weekend. I hope we have different opinions on that. Of course, absolutely. It would be mental if we didn't really. Yeah, true. ifm So obviously when you do look good, the man on form is Esac. To keep him fit and to keep him firing is obviously absolutely key. If he was to get injured, do you you think he could cope? Is there is there a ah suitable sort of replacement? Because obviously Wilson is also injured a lot of the time as well.
00:03:14
Speaker
Yeah, Wilson's probably the number one name on the injury list. Unfortunately, he's there pretty much all the time. He says he was best mate. But But ah yeah, I don't think we'd be able to cope. He's been injured for a couple of games this season and we've done okay. we really struggled to get the goals. I think it's just one of those where he's essential to the way we play. But our backups just after Callum Wilson just aren't good enough. We talked about potentially getting Nicholas Folkrogue in and somehow he went to West Ham, but he was never going to sit as a, oh, you might be second choice, you might be third choice. So that's why we ended up with William Orsula from Sheffield United. And then the cameos that he's had, he has looked quite good. he's 20 years old. I don't think he scored a Premier League goal yet. And he's I think he's played
00:04:00
Speaker
18-20 games across the two clubs so it just shows you you know he's not quite there just yet but no Newcastle fan expects him to be. No fair play. yeah that's stuck It would be a bit harsh I guess if they expected it straight away you know just even with the few minutes that he does get. and Speaking of the fans then did want to from an outside looking in obviously I like Eddie Howey he's clearly a good manager he clearly knows what he's doing in the Premier League Is that the same sort of feeling with all the fans at this minute? Or

Fan Perspectives on Management

00:04:30
Speaker
is it sort of? Yeah, the fan is that very divided. Yeah, yeah it's it's very divided. But what I would say is it's a lot more united than what you would see on social media. So social media, you know, you always get the louder fans piping up. This somehow managed to send a thousand tweets a day or something like that. And every single one of them is telling you how the person they don't like is dreadful. But, you know, in actual sort of
00:04:56
Speaker
When you're inside the ground, you can feel it united towards how. And I've said on previous podcasts, there might become a point this season where it does get under pressure. thought before the forest game, Forest and Arsenal, where we managed to put two wins together there, which was a bit of a shock. If we didn't win those, he might have been under pressure. But honestly, I think we're all fully united behind him going into the Christmas period.
00:05:20
Speaker
Nice, yeah. I mean i think ah think you can kind of see it anyway, to be fair. You never know, do you? Because when there is then that couple of bad results here or there, you can feel can you feel the turn sort of straight away? i feel I feel like it happens in a lot of football, because obviously, ah speaking i'm you know from an Ipswich fan, obviously coming up twice, the fans are obviously all there behind the team completely, because you're winning.
00:05:47
Speaker
that's that's that's obviously the case as soon as we come up it's our first taste of losing properly for a long long time and the home fans seem to they've turned quite quickly it seems well they they can do anyway is that is that the same sort of case i feel like it probably is with with new castle united really yeah i think it's a difficult one because as i say the minority will turn very very quickly i think The issue is as up north, that very we're all very emotional.

Season Expectations vs. Reality

00:06:16
Speaker
Emotion first, not exactly headstrong first. That'll probably go down well. People tend to think with a heart on their sleeve and it's an admirable trait. i absolutely I don't really fit into that personally, but it's one of those where
00:06:31
Speaker
once people take a step back and they actually think about the scenario they go well you know what we're finished fourth under how we should have been relegated the season before we're unlucky not to make Europe next season and you know we are just i think two points off top six and potentially hopefully after tonight in the caribou cup semi-finals so yeah Yeah, I think everyone realizes it's just a bit of a weird season and it's not, you know, it's not reflecting on how bad we are, but nobody except from Liverpool and maybe Chelsea have managed to find that consistency so far this year. Yeah, absolutely. No, I did absolutely agree. Because like you say, you're only a couple of points off really and fighting for for Europe. so I know he sits about 30 minutes, but that that reads nothing with how the table looks at a minute. so i don't I don't see why you can't push on, because when you're playing well, and I hope you don't play well this weekend, because you could blow us away, but when you are playing well, you look you look very good. but and we mentioned We mentioned Colin Wilson earlier.
00:07:31
Speaker
Obviously, he's always injured and it's a shame because in just in previous seasons, he's looked so good. like He's in England. yeah We got called up to the England squad. He's a good, good player. Is it time that he moves on for you? Yeah, I think he'll be one of those that moves on in the summer. think the intent was probably to get him out in January to a place where he can play regularly and actually build up his fitness. yeah While for us, he's playing 20 minutes here and there and then he's getting injured pretty much straight away.
00:08:00
Speaker
I think Callum needs it more than what Newcastle do. I think whether it he goes down to the championship with maybe goes back to Coventry or maybe, well, I was going to say Bournemouth, but they're high flying at the minute. So there's no chance of them needing a striker with Evan Nielsen, etc. They're doing really well. So I say i think you'll end up at a sort of mid table to lower tip side in the Premier League and then or ah ah a championship side. but everyone at Newcastle hopes he gets sort of the best treatment and actually gets playing again because as you say when he's fit and he's firing he's actually one of the best strikers in the league which is insane. Yeah yeah absolutely right I'd have to agree that Wilson is yeah he's quality. We'll take a short little break there but in the second part we'll discuss Ipswich a little bit for you as well.

Player Threats and Performance Analysis

00:09:11
Speaker
Lovely stuff and we're back with part two here at the Daily Ipswich, still joined by Michael from Daily Newcastle. So we've just discussed Newcastle's know your inconsistency a little bit, but then you know obviously top players with the sack in there, Gordon, etc. and from a From a football fan looking into sort of Ipswich, if you've seen and you know bits and bobs of them, which I'm sure you know you do with Match of the Day and things like that,
00:09:34
Speaker
Is there yeah um any sort of threats that you that you think him would be difficult maybe for you this weekend that we that we can bring? Yeah, I mean, to be honest, you look at the squad and Leif Davis is one that Newcastle, if we didn't have Lewis Hall, we'd probably be looking to sign because he's an absolutely fantastic talent. You saw that in the championship. It's it's to be honest, I'm really proud. I'm really say proud, proud of a football that doesn't play for you. I mean, happy. I'm really happy. yeah But he's gone on to do really well. And to be honest, I actually really like the look of your defence with Cameron Burgess in there as well at times. Although you've had a few injuries at the back of the season. and I know it's been there's been a bit of rotation at least. But then you look at up front, you know, Liam Dalap, you know, you've probably heard a lot of people probably say exactly the same thing, giving implore it. So I won't go too detailed there. But Amari Hutchinson looks an absolute talent. one of
00:10:30
Speaker
yeah you know, better dribblers in the league. And I think yeah one of those where I don't know if you've just been unlucky, sort of at times with not getting the ball in the back of the net, but when you combine to laps modics, Jack Clark, uh, Amari Hutchinson, you're thinking, well, they're getting ink overall. You should have the attack and talent to stay up. but again, it looks like your home form. So a bit like Brent Feds away form should be where,
00:11:36
Speaker
Yeah, I think without offense, like you say, a nice mention for Cameron Burgess there, because we're all we're all very surprised that he's stepped up and he's played really well, because obviously we signed Jacob Greaves from Hull for quite a fair bit of money, really. He's he's like, um think it was between 15 and 20, maybe. So it was a fair bit. So to keep to keep him out of the team, I think he's done a hell of a job to do really well there. And then ah we've unfortunately got Twans Aby missing.
00:12:05
Speaker
who, he's ah he's a Rolls Royce, he's a Rolls Royce in our team. He's yeah he's quality. Johnson looks okay. I think he'll start over the weekend, but obviously we'll discuss the team sort of a little bit later, but Johnson not too bad. And then yeah, the lap. I mean, what a signing. like He yeah has been incredibly unbelievable. I think though, I do think he's suspended for this weekend.
00:12:30
Speaker
So I'm a bit, I am a bit worried about that because we've got Hearst who's injured as well. So if it's going to be a like for like switch, it could be El Hamidi. And I'm not going to lie. I don't think there's too much threat there.
00:12:44
Speaker
I was going to say my knowledge of him is a lot less than what he is a viewer of the players. It feels a little bit too confident, but you've always got to fear the unknown. He might take his chance by Storm and hopefully, fingers crossed, if that's the case, you never know. We talked about our attacking threat and I think you're right with Smodych, he looks great. Hutchinson,
00:13:06
Speaker
if we can If he can be consistent, we can week out. We have a hell of a player on our hands there. We really do.

Relegation Battle: Can Ipswich Survive?

00:13:13
Speaker
He looks quality. and But having said that, obviously you're going to be pushing hopefully for Europe. We're absolutely just sort of fighting to stay up.
00:13:23
Speaker
personally a lot and a lot of feeling around sort of the fans and everything and around Ipswich is if there's anyone that can do it who's in the bottom three right now it is Ipswich. in what yeah Asking you as a football fan, do you think that's the case? Do you think Ipswich Town could do it?
00:13:43
Speaker
Yeah, I think to be honest, I think two of the teams in the bottom three at the minute will stay up. Ipswich are one of them. I also think Wolves are far too good to stay down there. It's one of those where I know you can't concede 40 goals in 15, 16 games or something and expect to stay up. But I imagine the guys come in from the Saudi league. Pereira, I think it is. I think he'll come in and do a good job. But then at the same time, as soon as Ipswich start to find their home form, you'll start to find yourselves moving up the league. Now, obviously,
00:14:13
Speaker
Vanisteroy taking over at Leicester is probably a little bit of a concern because, you know, he's done well pretty much everywhere he's gone. Is he going to be the same at Leicester? But I'll be honest, I would love it if Ipswich were the team to finally get Everton relegated from the Premier League.
00:14:31
Speaker
I like Ipswich as a club. I'd love you to stay up and, you know, Everton, there's always been a bit of beef there between Newcastle and Everton. So I would love that. What is that?
00:14:43
Speaker
I think I'm trying not to, I'm going to and try not to, you never mind. I haven't spent so long in Liverpool's shadow that they've tried to go for the biggest club they could find in what equally is poor. And right we've had Mike Ashley in charge for 14 years, 14 years or something like that. And we've declined massively as a club. So they've gone, well, you know what? We're not looking that good either. But at least we can bully these guys who are about the same size as us and still look good.
00:15:11
Speaker
And that's fine, we call them scouts macums over here. Can I play? I love that, yeah nice. Brilliant. Do you know what? I didn't know fully about that, really. that that's That's great. I absolutely love that. and we discussed Eddie Howe as well. Obviously, there's a lot of love there for him because, yeah, good manager. There's obviously also a lot of love for Kiri McKenna. and what do what do you make of What do you make of the man? Because honestly, know it's what was it I think it was his third year other day, but literally anniversary of when he signed for three ah ah but yeah three years ago, it was.
00:15:45
Speaker
and so the job he's done is obviously phenomenal and he's an absolute legend around the parts a bit like obviously the nice little connection we have with Bobby Robson anyway which is good he's not quite there yet of course but and Not quite, but you never know. it's It's one of those. I think when you look at McKenna, you look in the summer and every job that was available that was worth something, he was heavily linked. And I think that tells you everything about him. Obviously, I didn't watch Ipswich too much in league one. I knew about his in the championship, followed it briefly, saw exactly how good he's did across both campaigns coming at the Premier League. I thought,
00:16:21
Speaker
you're going to have to try a completely different style of play if you want to survive maybe. So this would be a really good test of how he does as a manager. And I think you know you look at the games such as the the Spurs game and the Wolves game, you know the from what I can tell, they weren't sort of you even your better performances at times. But you've got the job done, which is what's needed in the Premier League. So if you can turn sort of those good performances at the same time, i mean Liverpool opening day of the season.
00:16:49
Speaker
like yeah I thought you should have got something from that, if I'm completely honest. And it's one of those where if you can not play well in the Premier League and so keep getting those results, then McKenna could, you know, he could go at the very top and i'm not that's no disrespect to Ipswich. He could go with Newcastle. He could end up at a ah ah top four club very, very easily. mean, look at Vincent company, he's ended up a buy in it.
00:17:14
Speaker
really poor job, but barely last season. So, you know, anything can happen. And, you know, strong managers, particularly from around, you know, but England, Northern Ireland, et cetera, they're very rare to come by at the minute. So it could be sort of a not unpolished gem, but ah ah definitely a diamond in the rough. Yeah, not well said. up I completely agree. I mean, yeah, I think McKenna, I was worried that he was going to leave. We we were all a bit worried, especially when there was a link, obviously, at the start of the season on this straight away with United.
00:17:44
Speaker
Man United. Instantly, I did think, yeah, you could go just because of the previous connection. But thankfully stayed and hopefully we do stay up as well. But where we'll take another short little break with a little advert here from ah from the GSPN.

Lineup and Strategy Discussions

00:18:35
Speaker
And we're back with part three of crossover Thursday with Newcastle and with Michael. Thank you very much. And we're going to discuss the sort of lineups now and what we think is a you know how we're going to play, I guess, over the weekend. So we'll start with you, with you, mate. You're back for what you're going in with, what you think it's going to be for this weekend.
00:18:54
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, just a quick shout as well. i'm Nick Pope will be injured, so we'll have Martin Dubravka in andg goal. I typically wouldn't mention the goalkeeper, but it's a big miss for us. So yeah, I think having Dubravka in is something we're a little nervous about. back for Again, I would have liked to have seen the line up tonight because I think a lot of people are looking and going, right? Well, Brentford's the most important one. So if we're going to rotate, it will be against Ipswich, which could be great news for you, considering our inconsistencies at times. But I think it'll be Tino Livrimento, Fabian Cher.
00:19:31
Speaker
Dan Byrne, we've got Sven Botman back. He played for the under-23s the other night, but I think it'll be just a little too early for him. You mentioned Twens A.B. is your Rolls-Royce. Botman is ours 100%. He's For me, one of the best centre-backs in the league, but we will probably stick with Fabian Cher and Dan Byrne, and then, of course, it'll be Lewis Hall at left back.
00:19:54
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely fair. So, if, if when botmans fit, who who comes out? Is it Shat? It's Dan Bear. Bairn? Yeah, is it Bairn? Fair enough, yeah. I mean, so it makes, I like Bairn, but that makes sense.
00:20:09
Speaker
Yeah he's a great player but the way we play we need to play 10 yards further forward and one of the things we've struggled with this season is sort of having the confidence to play that 10 yards further forward because we know Fabian Shaw hasn't got the legs get back if someone's running behind and of course neither does Dan Byrne at 6'6 or whatever he is so it's Yeah, having Sven Botman back, being able to clean up will us a lot of good probably next year, but for now, yeah, we'll stick with burning chair. Yeah, yeah fair play. When Botman comes back, though, yeah, like you say, absolute Rolls-Royce, he's quality. I think yeah without offence, I mean, yeah, I'll keep it. It's going to be Mureich, I'm sure. want him so I'm not going to lie, I think a lot of us want to see Walton maybe given a chance because Mureich has looked very, very dodgy.
00:20:54
Speaker
in recent weeks. Yeah, it was the same at Burnley, wasn't it? It was a big debate over whether Trafford should start over Meerich. I know Meerich got the end of the season, but I don't think anyone was particularly happy with either of them starting there, so that's interesting. Yeah, it's it's a strange one. I think, obviously, you with Jormej Threcht being Esak, if he gets at all too much time, which I'm sure will happen, and he takes you know a snapshot, which he likes to do,
00:21:21
Speaker
there's There's a good chance there's a mistake in there at the near post or something like that. Yeah, it's a worry, but I'm sure he'll probably still stick with Miurich. And then obviously, at left back, I'll start at left back, Leif Davis has to be just not too much explanation needed there, I guess. I think Reeves is back, but at the minute, I would still start Burgess, and he's probably going to be okay.
00:21:44
Speaker
but I think they play work they bet they play better together. O'Shea, I think, has just started coming into his own a little bit, which is good to see, because, again, he was worried when he started, because we obviously he signed from Burnley as well, so I don't know if there was a confidence thing there with him and Mierich, maybe. but m Yeah, I think it will probably be O'Shea. He's looked a bit better recently. And then on the right, I think I would love to say Tansaby, of course, but he's out.
00:22:12
Speaker
for for the foreseeable I think as well. So I'd like to see Ben Johnson I think playing there and just because he's looked he's looked better in recent weeks so I think that would be my back for yeah well then moving on to sort of our mid field I don't know how I'm not sure how we'll line up what do you what do you usually go with what's your thoughts on on your mid? Yeah so unfortunately for us we got julian and suspended a The funny story is, he got told not to get a yellow card and then about 30 seconds later he got a yellow card. That's Joe Lindo loving it. We love him, but sometimes he's just a bit headstrong. But yeah, I think we'll see Sandro Tenali and Bruno Gamara start together again. Tenali will sit a bit deeper. I appreciate that face, yeah. It's not bad, that is it? That's a lovely pairing.
00:23:08
Speaker
it It's very good. We'll have Tenali sitting a little bit deeper Bruno play a little bit more of an advanced role like you did against Leicester, which I think was one of the things that led to us being so comfortable. will say, Bruno, there are a few things out of his game the out of his game at the minute. I don't know if you saw the Leicester highlights, but the dive. That's one of the things he needs to kick out.
00:23:30
Speaker
Yeah, there's no need to do it either. well one um But he gave a ah very heartfelt interview before, after the Brentford game where we got B4-2 and he could sort of see the desperation in his eyes to for what to do better. So you can feel the desperation and we're goingnna put I'm putting it down to that. ah ah it's It's not the kind of player he is. I know he's talking rough. But he you know he doesn't dive around the gaff that much. yeah, so it'll be Bruno and Tenali and then it's interesting who will replace Joe Linton, but I think it'll be more like-for-like with Joe Willick getting in there. He's just come back from injury, so again, it will very much depend on who plays tonight against Brentford, but it's likely to be Willick, I think, at the weekend. Yeah, fair play. I like i like Willick as well, to be fair. looks say but He does look a decent player. I like him
00:24:22
Speaker
I think without with us, I've liked the look of Kudjust, I don't know if you've seen too much of him, but he's looked a very good player recently. Swedish international as well. Yeah, that's it. yeah yeah Looks very good. So I'm hoping him, obviously we have got Phillips.
00:24:35
Speaker
but Honestly. Yeah, how's he been? ah It's really, it's been a strange one mate, really has because he came to us and a lot, I think a few fans are a bit, oh, I'm not too sure. I thought it was worth the risk to be honest, because why not? Like we've just come up, you know, we're a newly promoted team, he's coming from City. He might be able to give that little bit of experience as well, because he's done the Premier League. I know maybe he didn't do too well at West Ham on loan, but um thought he might be okay. And then the games that he has played,
00:25:07
Speaker
couple of mistakes fair play, but um there's been a couple of games where he's looked really good, but then the red card and then he's not really made his way back into the team from it. So I don't know. I don't think he'll play at the weekend. Maybe he's still got a knock because he always seems to be injured as well. Anyway, to be honest, see that red card the game, the draw.
00:25:28
Speaker
That was a long time ago. So maybe he's fallen out of favour a little. Yeah, it seems to be that way to be honest. One of them things, but I don't think he'll maybe see too many minutes. I think my pairing would be produced and I think it's got to be Mausie to be honest. Mausie? Yeah, he's been class. Again, another one from Ligue 1 who's made the step up.
00:25:52
Speaker
And ah we we were confident that he was going to and confident that he was gonna obviously b be solid, but he's Lutz. He's Lutz, a Premier League player. He really has. ah ah So yeah, couldn't be happier with him. So I think, yeah, then too, definitely. And then, mean, on your wings, it's a tough one because We have got quite a few injuries as well and that's, I never like to say that is, you know, is an excuse at all because you if you if you're in the Premier League, you you should not should have the backup, but you're looking that you're wanting to, do you know what I mean? Yeah, okay. We've got Wes Burns at the minute that's on the right and there's an Ipswich fan, I love him, but we all do.
00:26:36
Speaker
But is he a Premier League player? No, I don't think so. Do you know what I mean? I would probably agree with that, to be honest. Saw a bit of him, I think it was Championship. Do you sign him in League 1? Yeah, we got him from Fleetwood. leave Yeah, I thought he used to have had him for a little while.
00:26:53
Speaker
Yeah, from what I've seen, he looks at one of those that if he was in the championship at the moment, he'd probably be flying still very good. But it's just sort of when you make that step up, I mean, we saw it at times with Matt Ritchie, for example, sometimes the, you know, the commitment, 10 out of 10, you could never fault it, but just sort of that quality level sometimes, isn't there? So yeah, 100% get that.
00:27:15
Speaker
Yeah it's it it's a shame but it's it's just one of those things but I think with with the couple of injuries that we've got I mean I'm hoping Smodich is back because he missed last weekend but I think that was just from like a training ground illness or something maybe.
00:27:30
Speaker
And like, you know, so one of them little, little silly things. So I'm hoping he's back. So I'm hoping it would be him, maybe on the left, Hutch Hutchinson on the right. And I would start the minute, I'd still play Chaplin in the number 10, because he's looked. We were saying that before, because Hutchinson has played in the 10 a few times. Yeah, it's okay. But he's more of a winger because he's he likes to be direct and go and beat him. And whereas Chaplin, he might not be a Premier League player, but he knows the number 10 role inside out so he can play it better.
00:28:00
Speaker
It gives you a better balance. Exactly. yeah it's yeah It's a much better balance balance up top with him in the team, I think. So that that would be that would be that for me. and Going forward with your wingers, obviously you've got you've got quite a few to choose from. Yeah, that's a decent one.
00:28:18
Speaker
I think you've got to start Anthony Gordon. um Although, you know, if he starts tonight, I do think we might see Harvey Barnes at the weekend. Just I think it'll be one of those where Barnes is a little bit more direct when, you know, where you guys are at home, when we might not have as much of the ball as what we'd maybe like. yeah know The Harvey Barnes driving at the back line could be exactly what we need. And then I think it's I think the only option really on the right wing for us is, I know we've got Al Maron and potentially Barnes can play there, but Jacob Murphy's been playing out of his skin the last two games, two goals, two assists. Performances maybe haven't been as great as maybe some would have liked, but he's brought a balance to the team that's enabled Alexander Ryzak to be the best, you know, best and we've seen in the season and Anthony Golden looks better because of it as well. So I think we're going to look at
00:29:09
Speaker
I think it'll be Barnes and Murphy at the weekend, but if Barnes starts tonight instead of Gordon, then Gordon will start. Yeah, for both massive threats. I mean, yeah, like I say, Murphy's been, he's looked sharp recently, so I am worried about him because he looked very good against Leicester. Really good.

Player Development Under Eddie Howe

00:29:27
Speaker
And then of course... Yeah, he's a complete change player. Yeah, why do you think that is then? Is that Eddie Howe, the full, like, an influence?
00:29:35
Speaker
Yeah I think it has to be said Eddie Howe is probably the best manager I've seen at Newcastle sure sir for getting the best out of I don't want to say mediocre players but like top championship players it somehow manages to turn them into solid Premier League players you know Joe Linton Where before the how came in i don't think we would have got ten million for them and then in the summer there was rumors of him potentially being bought well sold for sixty seventy million and for me is one of the best box to box midfielders we've ever had a new castle so.
00:30:10
Speaker
it's ah It's a big change. We've seen it with Murphy. We've seen it with a right back Emile Kraft as well. He's always injured, unfortunately. But when he plays, he looks incredible. Like going from a right back who he plays for Sweden, same as Kajust. But yeah for us, he looked horrific. And then as soon as Howl came in, he hasn't put ah a a foot wrong. He's played against City twice. And I think we've won both games, which just tells you everything. Yeah, fair play.
00:30:38
Speaker
Yeah, well, it looks good playing, obviously, Eddie Howell being manager as well. It's always a plus in it, yeah. He knows what he's doing, man management. And of course, up top, mate, I'd love to say the lap, but I do think he is suspended, so it's not going to be, unfortunately. And Hurst is injured, which is a shame, because I'd like to... He's played a few minutes.
00:30:57
Speaker
And he's looked okay. He played against Southampton and he looked really good, actually. And and I'm not no disrespect to Southampton. I don't know that if that's a decent enough measure for the Premier League. but adam Maybe not. Maybe not. But yeah he did look good, but he's picked up another injury. So ah ah don't and I don't think he'll be fit for for the weekend. So it does look like if we play the same sort of way in the same setup, it will be Al Hamadi, which Hopefully, hopefully he does a job but I'm not too sure. and that be We know who yours will be anyway.
00:31:31
Speaker
Yeah, I'll also be Alexander Isaac, but I was actually going to say Sunderland a few times last season played Jack Clark up front. Do you think there's any risk of the same happening? Because ex-Sudland lads starting against Newcastle. Yeah, it's always going to be a headline. Yeah. But maybe if Chaplin went a bit further forward, just lost it in there somewhere. Yeah, that's not a bad show. Now that you've said that, it could be.
00:31:59
Speaker
Jack Clarke could actually play, but he could put him out on the left. He could put him down. He could put Schmodish up front, maybe. I could see that. I forgot about that 30-goaler season. Yeah, you know, that championship, that's the old story that we're figuring out. Is there a striker yet there? Well, there's this one that got so many goals last season. No, no, there's me one there. That's a bit of a worry.
00:32:28
Speaker
yeah In fairness, that was my bit of a I'll completely change it. ah ah think jack clark In fairness, maybe Broadhead could get some minutes as well because he's he's starting to get um his his fitness back, I think, and obviously he's actually done as well, so you never know. yeah and You know what, I don't like Ipswich as much as what I thought. He's signing all these excellent players.
00:32:49
Speaker
A bit disgusting, really. Sorry about that, mate. Sorry, you've got to do what you've got to do. You've

Match Predictions and Conclusion

00:32:56
Speaker
got to do it, you've got to do it. So in that case, I do think, yeah, probably some others will we'll have a go up front then, I think, on Saturday. Well, that's pretty much our lineups, I think. I'm quite happy. i think I think it could be a good game. Score predictions. Yeah, it should be a good game. Yeah, I think it i think absolutely we could be. Michael, we'll go start with you first, mate. What do you reckon?
00:33:17
Speaker
Yeah, so I think we pretty much struggle to keep clean sheets on the road. don't think it's going to be a tough game, but I do think... I think we'll win tonight against Brentford, we've demolished Leicester, we're starting to pick up a good run of form and I think we'll go in into Boxing Day against Aston Villa with a good run of form and I think we'll win 3-1 but i don't I think we'll score later on and it'll look a lot more comfortable on paper by than what it actually is in the game because I think these are going to give us a good game. Yeah, not an absolutely fair play. I think, well, my heart wants to say a win but I think realistically
00:33:54
Speaker
ah ah I do think we'll pick up a point though, so I think I'm going to go for a 1-0 draw, I think. do i think we'll But it might be a bit of a a bit of a scraped one, do you know what I mean? I think it could be one of those, where we might be kept in the game a few times without defending, where Bear just might make a couple of good blocks in, I reckon. And and yeah, I reckon we might we might maybe snatch a draw, and I say snatch because, I think we mentioned it earlier, that we've not looked great at home recently. so No, put it home, but good on the road. Yeah, put it on good away. But I think, yeah, could this be the turning point? We don't know. But one off for me. That is all from us then. Thank you very much for listening. This has been the Daily Ipswich. And thank you very much to Michael from Daily Newcastle for joining us. Cheers, mate.
