Introduction & Overlooked Obsessions

00:00:00
Speaker

We want to learn all about your weird and wild obsessions or your perfectly normal hobbies that you've taken just a little too far. We want to dabble in your curious interests. Can we interest you in today's episode?

March Madness Adventure

00:00:34
Speaker
Hey, Charlotte. Hey, Patty. How are you? I'm pretty good. How are you? How was your week? Oh, it was great. We are in the midst of true March Madness. Yeah. And so that's been really fun. Been watching lots of games, had to figure out how to like be able to watch without regular television, you know, like I have all the streaming things, but I'm like, where can I watch them? And All of that. And as I mentioned, Chris, my buddy Chris was coming into town who, you know, and he came in, we went to a bar, which some friends, like some of my only friends that I have here had suggested. They're like, it's a soccer gra bar, but like they'll definitely, there aren't any major matches. So you guys should go there. It'll be a great place to watch. We get there at 11, cause that's when it opens and the first game's going to start a couple of minutes later.
00:01:24
Speaker
Dad, like the bartender's kind of like, oh, hi, you know, still doing his like, great get ready things. And so we're like, okay, let's, you know, figure out the right place we wanna sit based on the televisions and oh, no, this this stool is a little too squeaky. Let's change that out. You know, we're like looking around, we order our first drink and he starts playing some like really mellow Irish music.
00:01:52
Speaker
and does not have like the actual game sound on the speakers. yeah And only one television is even set to that. The other one has like, like classic baseball games on. i but you know And so we were like, and he did not seem up for like any requests. So we quickly, we quickly realized like this is not where we want to be. We've got to get out of here. So um thankfully I had gone to Reddit ahead of time and asked like, Hey, where would you guys recommend I go? And so they suggested this other bar and we
00:02:32
Speaker
got a Uber right away or a Lyft right away and hightailed it out of there um to another bar. And we made it just in time. They were like, oh, we've got two seats at the bar left. And we're like, we'll take them. And it was packed and it was like fans and TVs everywhere. And like we were saying how it's such a like magical skill to be able to figure out exactly when to change what the audio is in the bar, you know, like, okay, this game's far enough along, so now we're switching it to this one and, you know, that one and all of those things. So, um yeah. How was your week? Well, it was good. That sounds amazing, by the way. It sounds like such a nice tradition to have and just like a fun way to connect, but also, I don't know, be around other people.
00:03:26
Speaker
Yes. yeah Totally. Yeah. I've been watching some March Madness 2. We went to a bar that was, you know, sort of like the one you're describing, but um like at least three different games going on at the same time, one gigantic TV and then a bunch of little ones. And just reminded me of, I don't know, like college, if I went to a big university where they cared about sports. I imagine that's what my college experience is. The college of our videos, of our movies, right? Yeah, exactly. And then I've also, you know, I've conned you into doing a bracket. And then now my family's like,
00:04:14
Speaker
How come you didn't invite us? I was like, well, if you literally mentioned basketball ever before, I would have invited you. Next year. No, we know. yeah Yeah, it's almost like you could have invited them late if if the app allowed it, you know, because, you know, they're not going to be like choosing based on who won or who played that day. Like they'd have no clue. Yeah. Well, and then, you know, like Charlie will take like a small piece of information and then be like, I know everything. Like he's like, I listen to a podcast about it and your pick for who's going to win didn't come up at all during the podcast.
00:04:57
Speaker
Well, well, but also, I mean, there've already been some major upsets like Kentucky out Auburn out, you know what I mean? Like, Those are, that's, that's what it's all about. You don't want to just choose like UConn because everyone chose UConn, you know? Yeah. And I did choose some of the upsets, but you know, not to win, but it's just to win that round. Right, right. Yeah.

St. Patrick's Day Shenanigans

00:05:24
Speaker
I guess the weekend before that we, ah Adam had some friends from
00:05:30
Speaker
like high school in town. And it was like the first time that I was meeting them. It was like his lady friends. And we did like St. Patrick's Day type stuff, except fun, not entirely like we did. We saw a puppy parade. That was pretty cool.
00:05:53
Speaker
Not like an actual parade. and Didn't wake up in time for that one. You and the dog slept in. Yeah. That's really cool. Does Dunford do it up big? You know, not compared to Chicago. i I was surprised that there were not more people out and about. You know, there's people wearing green, but there's there's nobody just like drunk at 9 a.m. on a Saturday, but which is you know probably good. yeah yeah but And then we didn't see the parade, so I don't actually know. I've never been to it. I don't know if it's as good, but no nothing has died green. I didn't see any any bodies of water died green. Oh my gosh. I wonder if they even did the Miller Lights died green, you know? Oh, I did see some yeah light beers died green, so there's that.
00:06:50
Speaker
Yeah. Very different than an entire body of water though. Yeah. But it is cool and similar to a body of water because it's Miller. light but's And they probably had to, you know, die the entire vat. Yeah. brain So.
00:07:09
Speaker
There you go. Yeah, I went out with the only other friends like other than my sister that I have here and on that Saturday. that saturday And it was very fun because we were not going out for St. Patrick's Day, but we all like met up and happened to be wearing all green. You know, like it was like, Oh, clearly we're going to do this. Like it wasn't explicitly said, but And um they have a golf cart. So we went golf carting around town like to different bars and stuff like that. And then met up with some of their other golf cart friends and neighbors to like drive together as a gang. Is that a St. Louis thing where you just drive a golf cart like it's a car? I guess so. It's like quite a few people have them. It's it's a thing. So is it like you can
00:08:01
Speaker
you can drive a golf cart after you've been drinking and that's okay. And that's why people do, or this just seems like. I doubt it. Okay. Yeah. I really doubt it. And I also would be curious to know like, is it actually legal to drive it on the roads, like as if it's a normal car, you know? Yeah. Like I think of it as like, if you live in an older adult community, um,
00:08:29
Speaker
then you can drive your golf cart around and that's expected. But the streets of the city, that's, I mean, it seems fun. Yes. And yes, it was very fun. And I was so glad I wasn't in charge of it. Like I was like, I'll just sit in the back and you tell me when to like, hold on, you know? like Yeah. And I didn't get too drunk. So I was, you know, able to keep my wits about me the whole time and not fall out of the golf cart. Yeah. When you're in a golf cart gang, you've got to make sure that you're ready to take on any other gangs. Keep your wits about you.
00:09:09
Speaker
Yes. Very fun.

The Magic of Libraries

00:09:11
Speaker
Well, this week it's my turn. I will be try asking the question, can I interest you in? And it's kind of appropriate given where I am because I'm here at the St. Louis central library, public library, and I'm going to ask you, can I interest you in the library?
00:09:34
Speaker
and Oh my God. Yeah, I know. So it's similar to what you were saying when you were doing basketball. It's like, uh-huh, the library? Really? Like, that's not, I mean, okay, sure. People like the library.
00:09:49
Speaker
But as I was like talking to my sister about this, I was like, I don't know. I don't have any interests other than like the movie Home Alone or Top Chef. How do I get people to be interested in that? And she was like, you are pretty interested in the library. And I was like, oh my god, I am. See, I didn't know that. This is great. I didn't know that. Yes, see? And I don't know if I would have known it either. But having just moved, and of course it's not like just moved, but It kind of reignited that like I, every time I move somewhere, I feel ah officially part of the place once I have my library card, partially because it means you have a piece of mail that shows your new address on it. Like that's one of the pieces that you have to, you know, bring. And it's like, okay, now I'm like part of something, you know, like governmental, like
00:10:44
Speaker
I don't even know really if this, said I suppose libraries are all differently funded. But anyways, like something that's like very official and then it kind of opens you up to like the community of the library, which can be a mixed bag. um So before I go on, I want to ask you, do you yet have your library card in Colorado?
00:11:09
Speaker
So I have a library card for Littleton where I used to live in Denver, but I actually live in Jefferson County in Lakewood. So I don't have a library card for that. Oh, this is perfect. Oh, that works out well because, um you know,
00:11:28
Speaker
you will That will be our challenge, which I shouldn't have told you anyways. But i when I moved first to Minneapolis, um that was like the first time I lived lived somewhere other than like college, you know, um where I had to get a li library card. And it was awesome because it was kind of like I worked it into part of my daily routine. i would get up I was unemployed at the time, it except I was like working partially for my old place remote while I was looking for jobs. So I would like get up, I'd walk to the library, I'd like you know check my email there instead of checking it at home. I could use the printer or the fax machine there if I needed to like send things off for job applications.
00:12:11
Speaker
and you know it kind of like gave me a sense of like purpose for the day like okay I got out of the house I did some things then when I moved to um back to Illinois I was living in Oak Park so no longer Chicago Public Library but that library was super cool in that they're part of a very wealthy community. And so like, they put that into play of using those funds to help those who are maybe on the margins. So for example, they were one of the first libraries, at least in ill iino Illinois, maybe elsewhere, that took away any late fees. So it was like,
00:12:53
Speaker
No, we're not going to charge late fees. We don't need those funds to like actually keep ourselves going. And we don't want that to be something that keeps people from coming back or using our services. So goodbye late fees. Um, they also allowed where you could like go and rent the internet, which I feel like an old lady when I say that, because you're not renting the internet, but you could get like a wifi.
00:13:18
Speaker
things so that if you didn't have internet, you could rent it out for a week or whatever and use it wherever you needed it, which was pretty cool, along with laptops, of course. And I joined a book club when I was there, partially because I met up at bars.
00:13:36
Speaker
So there were these two women who ran it. One was somebody who um picked books for the library so she would like go around to different conferences and and read a ton of books and then she'd be like the buyer ah for lack of a better word for books for the library and then the other she focused on ah veteran and disabled individuals services. So we actually had quite a few people in our book club who were wheelchair bound and so we would have to pick our bar locations based on like how accessible are they? Can they get into the door and
00:14:12
Speaker
around the area and will there be a place for them to like, you know, sidle up to the to the table easily. And it was just so fun. I felt like I made actual friends and like that people who I would then later see all the time walking around but would have never, you know, known if I hadn't done that. So that was awesome. And now that I live in St. Louis,
00:14:34
Speaker
I am obsessed with the library currently. um I immediately signed up for their newsletter, so I get the email newsletter weekly where it's like, what are the events that are happening? Partially because I figured it would be good for when I'm hanging out with the kids. it's like Emilio's four, Leila's six, and David is 14. So it's like, okay, what are some things that I could do with each of them? Especially, you know, I often am with David when he gets out of school. So like what are some teen clubs that he could take part in that especially aren't very like language based as he's trying to learn English and things like that. And then what are some things that we could do like as a whole family or that I can do on my own?
00:15:19
Speaker
And one of the things that I found was this wonderful recording space orientation. And it happened just around the time that you and I were talking about starting a podcast. So I was like, Oh my God, they have recording rooms? Like how perfect did that? So I signed up and I went one evening, um, for the orientation and it was so exciting cause it just like, it was cool how many that they have this as a resource that anybody can use for free. You know, you take the orientation just so that you know how to not mess up the equipment, but that they have like four or five recording rooms across the city at different libraries. You just have to sign up online or you can call or stop at the front desk if you don't have access to any of those other ways. And they have a keyboard in every room where you can, you know, basically come set it up where it connects to a program and you can create any music with any instrument on that keyboard. They have like electric basses and drum kits that you can use while you're in the space to make music, record music. They have Audition and Pro Tools and all of these other programs like on the computers that you can use for free to be able to record your music or create music or edit
00:16:41
Speaker
recordings any of those things as well so it's just like how amazing is it that if you want to. use this tool, you can. And then on top of it, during this time, the guy, which I didn't get his name, but he was all about like, and we offer TechConnect. TechConnect is like this hour long cy session. You can sign up anytime, as many times as you want. You can even say like, I'm going to need more than an hour and we'll set up more time where you basically have one-on-one time with one of their tech people. They have three of them that are employed that will like go more in depth with you.
00:17:18
Speaker
on anything you want. Like not just recording or anything? Anything! What? Yes! So like oh if your computer is just not working or something? Oh, maybe. I wonder about that. But if you if you wanted to like edit an episode of something. Mmm, such as. I feel like I feel like there's no end to, you know, I keep hearing things about the library and that's like new things I didn't know they did. Yeah. Yeah. It's like never ending. It's seriously. So then, you know, to the point of maybe learn how to edit an episode.

Library Events & Experiences

00:18:01
Speaker
Um, I am going to have on Friday, this Friday, a one-on-one tech connect session.
00:18:07
Speaker
where I, what I put in as like what I wanted was to learn how to edit together. You know, like, I'm like, there'll be multiple record tracks. How do I do it? I don't even know the language, you know? So I'll be learning that, which is awesome.
00:18:23
Speaker
amazing Yeah. And then the latest thing at the library. So I was at this, this exact library earlier this week. I think it was Tuesday or Tuesday because in the newsletter I saw, you know, Hey, this is upcoming, this interesting event. And I registered for it. And it was learning how to farm, do a worm farm.
00:18:50
Speaker
um
00:18:56
Speaker
So I listened to the presentation, I was taking notes, of course I can't find those notes. um And that's okay though, because I left here this beautiful, like very ornate stately old library. I walked out of here with a bucket of worms in their own little farm compost. Why they gave you a bucket of worms and Wow. Okay. um Can I just ask quickly about the worms though? Like what yeah was the, like they help you to compost. ah Exactly. So yes, it's like, there's the whole bed there. So now I can feed them my food scraps, anything that's not bread, dairy, meat, and minimize the citrus.
00:19:47
Speaker
and also put in like leaves are perfect they said because like leaves are basically like have tons of nutrients that then fall off the lee you know trees and then are on the ground and that's why there's that whole movement now to like not rake your leaves because it's like no it's giving the earth what it needs and cardboard as long as it's not like doesn't have that like glossy stuff on it or newspaper. So like all of those things I can also put on and it loves a sprinkling of eggshells. So I've started blending eggshells in my like NutriBullet to put on and you get to feed them like once a week. And it's nice that you have pets pet friends for
00:20:32
Speaker
I know. osco but I know, I'm like, I have to, he will eat them. So I'm like, I have to put them somewhere where he will never find them um or can't get to them. But yeah, I was just like, what are the chances? I mean, like, the library has everything. And they were like, how did you hear about this event? You know, because it's like, there are so many events and they want people to show up. And I'm like, oh, the newsletter, you know, and it's like, oh, great. Because it's like, not everything's going to get into the newsletter.
00:21:01
Speaker
But yeah, I mean maybe choose the ones where you get free worms and yeah, so yeah totally Wow, yeah do have some weird stuff I feel like like I do want to get ah a library card for the one that's um near me because I was not like this I I think it was around Halloween, um like some sort of outdoor event and they had a table there. And so I was like, oh, let me go see if they could give me a library card, but they couldn't. I've never made it to the library, but they had information about their events and they had one event that was ah basically like dolls that were haunted.
00:21:50
Speaker
I, I, I'm weirdly interested even though I am terrified of dolls. that are haunted or look like they might be haunted or children that look like they might be haunted. Like anything that involves like a Chucky-esque situation I can't handle, but I thought it was amazing that it was a library event. Absolutely. And I would be so interested to know like, was it just like somebody wrote a book about it or like were they going to have dolls there? They were going to have dolls there.
00:22:25
Speaker
If it was just the book, I'd be like, okay, but the dolls are going to be there. Oh my gosh. And I wonder if it was like, and hey, if you think one of your dolls is haunted, you can bring it here. Maybe we can let you know if we think it's haunted. Yeah, they will not be exercised. It's just going to be looking at haunted dolls. Wow, I do feel like I heard on a podcast that there's some like, super famous haunted doll Hmm, I'll have to Google it up because yeah. Oh, that is interesting. Yeah. And I mean, that's a thing like librarians, I think by nature, you have to be kind of interested and curious about things because you have to like do research. And so then is one of the perks of being a librarian that if you want, or maybe you're required, you can do an entire like workshop or session or whatever on your random interests. Yeah, that's, that's totally true.
00:23:26
Speaker
You can, I mean, I'm sure like they probably have to go out and find experts in something that they, you know, think that would be interesting to others. um I mean, I don't know enough about it to say definitively, but I think so.
00:23:42
Speaker
Well, and don't you remember, like, was it 10, 15 years ago? Like, I feel like maybe we were just the right age or in the right, like hanging out in the right places or whatever. But I feel like library science became such a trendy career the for people our age. Yeah. I wonder what happened after that. Right. Everybody got their degrees. Did they all get jobs?
00:24:11
Speaker
uhu Is it still trendy and we just don't know it because we're... We've aged out. Yeah, I don't know. so Another thing that I learned, wait, maybe you're going to say this. No, please. um Somebody sent me information about the library having like a tool library where you could like check out like a sewing machine or other tools like that. Oh my God, that's brilliant.
00:24:39
Speaker
yeah That would be brilliant. I wonder if you could even do like saws like, Oh, I need a circular saw. Yeah. I mean, maybe. Although maybe more of a liability. well it's true But that is so cool. Yeah. know It's like something that you don't probably a lot of people might need every once in a while, but it's not worth it or financially viable to buy one when you only need it once in a while.
00:25:11
Speaker
Yeah. Or like you want to try it out before you commit. Right. Like I want to think about getting into sewing, but I don't know yet. Uh-huh, yeah. Oh, that is so cool. See, all those things, and it's like, how how do you learn about it? A couple of the other ones, so Chicago obviously love that they have, they give away free museum passes, or not give away, but like you can check out free museum passes for like the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum, all these places that are like really expensive, and it's like, no, no, no, don't worry.

Libraries as Community Safe Havens

00:25:45
Speaker
We'll let you in for free. So I do love that.
00:25:48
Speaker
um I love that. yeah They have bathrooms. So even if you're like walking around a neighborhood or whatever and you're like, oh my gosh, I need to use the restroom. You got it. One thing I will say, and this might be TMI, but I'm the type of person that when I go into a, into a library, I always have to use the restroom. Like it does something to my bowel system. I don't know if it's like nerves or relaxation. So I also love that they have a bathroom for that reason. Cause then I can stick around longer. Um, I,
00:26:20
Speaker
I love that they have work rooms available so you can like rent out, you know, a meeting room or a space or just a quiet place where you can like do your work. And then their organization system, the good old Dewey Decimal.
00:26:36
Speaker
You know, it's like I know that we no longer have to go to the card catalog, but like they still do organize it in that way. So it's like so well organized. It makes so much sense it once you get it. And I just love that there's that level of organization and and research that you can do. You know, like there's still even things that it's like, I don't know if they do microfiche anymore, but like those old timey newspapers that it's like, you you know, don't worry, the library's got it. You can't check it out, but you can do your research here and you can like make photocopies of it or take notes or whatever. So I love the library. I feel like with the library also, it's kind of nice in the sense that like, if you go to the internet for something, like you want to learn something,
00:27:25
Speaker
you're gonna get distracted by like 10,000 other different things like trying to get your attention. If you go to the library, I mean, you still might get distracted by like the book, you know, display or whatever, but it's more like you can go and you can kind of focus and you can, um it just, yeah, there's not that like, nobody's trying to make money off of you at the library like they are on the internet.
00:27:52
Speaker
It's for everybody. I mean, the thing about the bathrooms is that it's, it's great and it's needed for people who don't have their own bathrooms too. um I mean, in some cases, like there was a whole situation in Colorado, like Denver area where multiple libraries had to be closed to be fumigated because of meth, like, or I think it was being found in the particles being found in the air. No. Yeah, yeah. From like using or? Yeah, yeah. Like I think people were using maybe in the bathroom. That just goes to show you that, you know, it's for everybody. It's for everybody. I think we have all the food we get in now. I think it's fine. I'm sure it is. And they put up a nice sign, you know, that's like, oh, but hey. Yeah.
00:28:45
Speaker
and Math, not, not one of the things you do here at the library. You're not supposed to, you're not supposed to.
00:28:53
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, it's true. It's true. Like you do often, I remember people would like complain about that. They'd be like, but there's so many homeless people there. And I'm like, but it's a great place for them to be able to like sit and read and use the internet and like be warm or cool in the summer. You know, like, exactly I don't care.
00:29:14
Speaker
Because otherwise, i yeah, to charge their phone. like I mean, there's so many things that it are difficult to do, and the library has access. Yeah, and is safe for people. Mm-hmm.
00:29:28
Speaker
yeah Yeah, it is interesting, they said, one of the like when I took the orientation um for the recording room, one of the women was like, now I see teens in here all the time. like What are they all doing here? How are you getting them into the library? It's like, you're giving away crack for free. And the guy was like, yeah, you know I think they like using the recording room. And she's like, are they making music? are they you know What are they doing? And he's like, I think mostly they're just hanging out. And it's a quiet place for them to hang out.
00:29:59
Speaker
And they can like, you know, talk because you're not supposed to talk at the library and stuff like that. And I was like, you know what, even if that is the case, like good for them. They're at the library. That's ingenious. You know, they're like, okay, where can we go to talk and have like some quiet space ah where others can't overhear us and yeah you know, just some peace and that sounds great as long as you know. Yeah.
00:30:28
Speaker
That's what they're doing. As long as that's what they're doing. They're not the ones. Yeah. Smoking meth. What do you, how how do you, how do you, I think smoking smoking. Yeah. Yeah. Not, not, you know, licking it or just, I don't know. It's a cat's drug. Patty, I'm wondering, like what's the inciting incident for you falling in love with the library?
00:30:57
Speaker
Ooh, right. Well, I know we went to the library as kids a lot. Like we would go to our local independence library. It was the independence branch of the Chicago library system. And it was like, we would go there for story time and also like music time. And my mom was always big on like books in general. And I think it was something good for us to do to like kill some time.

So I think probably from an early age, the library was like, good times, you know, like you get to hang out with your friends, do something fun, get some books, like, how great is it to be able to leave a place with books, and like, kind of no limit because you don't have to pay for them and you'll bring them back, like, fabulous. Yeah, and your family's super into books, like your mom, what she reads ah constantly.
00:31:52
Speaker
Yes, right. Yeah. Yeah, right. Very, very big on the books. So I think that was it. And then also like in grammar school and high school, I loved going to, did you ever in Chicago go to Salzer library? That's over on Lincoln in the Lincoln square. Like it said, Lincoln and Montrose.
00:32:13
Speaker
It's a big old library and I loved going there to do homework or study because I guess to your point earlier where it's like, you're not going to be as distracted, but it also feels so intentional. Like when you're like, I'm going to the library to study or I'm going to the library to do research on my stuff, which also it was early days of internet. So like I was physically like checking, like looking in books to do research, you know,
00:32:41
Speaker
But I loved that feeling, like it felt like very special and very adult. And I don't know. Yeah. So i've I think it just always felt like a ah resource. Yeah. And then you like remember that feeling. And somehow, like almost every library has just that kind of a feeling, no matter how different it looks or, you know, the setup, I think it just, I mean,
00:33:11
Speaker
some more than others. But ah it just has that like feeling where everybody um might have like a reverence for blocks or where at least like a sense of community. Yeah. I'm just thinking about in college, I used to go to the library to take a nap because the chairs were so comfortable. Wait, so you were taking seated naps? Yeah, well, that they had it like all these different chairs that were like big and pillowy and like by the window. And so I never really did a lot of studying at the library because I associated it with sleep.
00:33:58
Speaker
That's also a nice association I have. And that's important too. I mean, in college, it's like you're doing everything in your room. You know, like if you live in the dorms, it's like, so to be able to go somewhere else to take a nap, that's important.

Library Comfort & Humor

00:34:15
Speaker
Yeah. And if, you know, I felt safe enough to just you No concerns about kicking you out. And sometimes it was like, this is this is sad. It was like, I'd be in class and I'd be so wanting to fall asleep. And then on my way back to the dorm from class, I'd be like, I don't think I can make it to the dorm.
00:34:44
Speaker
Good thing the library is on the way.
00:34:51
Speaker
Oh my God, that's so hilarious. Yeah, yeah, never. Not a lot of studying, but warm up memories. That's great that they invest in such good seats.
00:35:08
Speaker
Got to be comfortable while you read. e I remember that about Barnes and Noble. You know, like they would have nice little places that you could also set up. Mm hmm. Just sort of like read as much of a book as possible so you don't have to buy it.
00:35:23
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. big That's funny. Okay, so I remember my freshman year of high school, my sister was a senior and so I would get rides with her and she had what they called zero period. And so it was like before school started, you, cause you know, she just is such an overachiever and I'm sure it was like honors something. And so it was like, I didn't have class at that time cause you couldn't take zero period as a freshman. And so I would go to the library And read, i I decided I would read Stephen King's Carrie, but not check it out. I would just go every morning and like pull it off the shelf, read, and then put it back on the shelf.
00:36:08
Speaker
ah and I don't know. I mean, I haven't read it, but I i know about the movie. And h does that put you in a good mood for school? Right. Good point. No. And it's like bullies, like they're bullying her at school. Like, Oh my God. Like I'm ready when you put the book back on the shelf. i I've got a plan. It started bringing a bucket with me. Like, Oh my God. Yeah. I i like this. And I, I think I got like a a taste of what
00:36:43
Speaker
The assignment might be. But officially. So your assignment, Charlotte, is before we record next, you must go get a library card.
00:36:56
Speaker
and from your local library. And if they have a, now I don't know, maybe you're someone who gets too many emails already, but if they have like a newsletter or something that you can sign up for, I would like you to sign up for it. So you can at least just, you know, peruse. You don't have to go to the events, but just see like, what are they offering? What do they got going on? What's happening?
00:37:17
Speaker
I know. I love that because I, while I get a lot of emails, most of them I don't want, but that is one that I didn't know existed and that I would want. Okay. Okay. Good. Yeah. Just knowing some of the the things that I mean, like I could get a worm farm potentially. That's amazing. Um, I don't know what else they've got going on, but they always have something, something cool, but we'll, we'll find out. We can, we can compare notes.
00:37:46
Speaker
Yes. And so I, as I mentioned, will be going on Friday. I'll be meeting with Dylan to learn about, he will be my tech connect, tech person. I was going to call him a geek, but I'm like, that's rude. And that's very only from Best Buy, but he will be teaching me kind of how to use the tools a little bit better for editing and things like that. So hopefully I'll get some some good some good help. One other thing I was just thinking about, and I say one other thing and I know it won't just be the one other thing. At the Oak Park Library, they also would have read to a dog story times. And it was for people like children or anybody who was newer at reading.
00:38:34
Speaker
and are maybe a little bit nervous about reading. And so they would have dogs come. And then it was like, here, read to a dog. So they were like practicing reading aloud to like an audience that's not going to judge you. They might like you, but that's all. That's amazing. So they would bring the dogs in, like train, dogs trained to pretend they're listening.
00:39:00
Speaker
Exactly. Yeah, that is a funny thing. Like, okay, but can you now we need to teach you to pretend to be listening, like, cock your head like, Oh, then what? No, your pronunciation is perfect. That's not a silent L. Yeah, just fall asleep. Yeah. Yeah. So I always thought that was pretty cute.
00:39:25
Speaker
So I will do some more library related stuff as well. thats um I mean, I like also what you said about like when you're new to a city or new somewhere, it's just like a way to and now get to know people, get to know what sorts of offerings they have and integrate yourself into the community. I never thought of it that way, but It makes total sense. And so, I mean, even though I've been here almost five years, I still feel like yeah you know part of it was COVID times. So right to get a little more integrated, that could be just a good way to know about this area. Yeah. Your more a local community. Yeah. Cause like, it's not like you don't have a library card that you could potentially use if you wanted to and either of those two other locations. So it's like just something a little bit more.
00:40:24
Speaker
More local.

Haunted Dolls Event

00:40:25
Speaker
Yeah, my county where I have to vote for things and people and don't know a lot about it. Yeah, get to know my county. Your county. All right, well, we'll connect next time and see what happens. We'll be looking forward to hearing what Dylan has taught you. And how my worms are doing. And I can't wait to hear about how it goes getting your library card. Yeah, I hear about any weird, creepy events that they're having this time I'm going to go. Register, be there. But the dolls, come on now. Anything else, honestly. Oh yeah. And I'm going to look up that information about that creepy doll because I want to share that with you. That creepy doll. Yeah. It's like I don't believe in ghosts, but I just, they just, I might, I might believe in them.
00:41:20
Speaker
Oh, totally. Yeah, I'm afraid of them. I don't believe in them necessarily, but I'm afraid of them. Yeah, just in case. Well, thank you. This was wonderful. I loved hearing about what the library means to you. And know having an excuse to finally go, I've been honestly, for years have been like, okay, you gotta go get this library card. Now there's a deadline attached. Yes, yes. Which is cool.
