In this engaging episode of the Uncommon Wealth Podcast, hosts Phillip Ramsey and Arron Cramer delve into the dichotomy between "uphill goals" and "downhill decisions." They explore how people's ambitious objectives often clash with their everyday habits and choices, leading to frustration and lack of progress. With a lively discussion centered around real-life anecdotes, they emphasize the importance of aligning one's actions with their aspirations.

Phillip kicks off the conversation with a compelling story about a friend whose goal of losing weight was undermined by his habit of eating high-calorie desserts. This anecdote serves as a springboard for a broader discussion on the disconnect many experience between their goals and actions. Key themes include the need for accountability in personal development and the crucial role of honest feedback from friends. By integrating these narratives with actionable advice, Phillip and Arron offer listeners both motivation and practical strategies for bridging the gap between desire and action.

Key Takeaways:

  • Uphill goals require consistent and aligned efforts to avoid the pitfall of making downhill decisions that undermine progress.
  • Accountability partners can play a crucial role in helping individuals recognize when their actions do not align with their stated goals.
  • Verbalizing your goals increases the likelihood of achieving them, but only if they are backed by consistent actions.
  • Credibility is diminished when there's a discrepancy between what you say and what you do; maintaining alignment is critical.
  • Friends who give honest feedback are invaluable in helping you stay on track and achieve your personal and professional aspirations.

Meet the Hosts: Philip and Aaron

00:00:25
Speaker
Hello, welcome to the Uncomma Wealth podcast. I'm your host, Philip Ramsey. And I'm Aaron Kramer. Thanks for tuning in. It's a simple step. It's five minutes. It's quick. Aaron has no idea what we're going to talk about ah this one. I am going to struggle getting under five minutes. So start the timer when I start talking now.

Uphill Goals vs. Downhill Decisions

00:00:43
Speaker
OK, people who have uphill goals and downhill decisions kill me. It frustrates me to all get out. What does this mean? OK, I had a friend.
00:00:54
Speaker
one time and we were eating at Dairy Queen. And he was eating a peanut buster parfait. True story. If you know anything about Dairy Queen, it's like the biggest thing on the menu. Huge. Hot fudge, peanuts, a lot of ice cream. And he says, I want to, he said, Phillip, I want to weigh 185 pounds. And he weighed, I think over 300 pounds. And I told him at that moment, I was like, Hey man, I don't know if that's the best time to say that.
00:01:20
Speaker
Like we were both eating that. And I was like, I think what you meant to say is like, you're feeling guilty because this isn't helping you towards losing weight. That's totally different than I want to weigh 185 pounds. And to him, I said, you have uphill goals and downhill decisions. And when you talk about the your uphill goals, when you're making a downhill decision, it doesn't give you a lot of credibility.
00:01:42
Speaker
And I was like, if you were eating a salad and you said you wanted to weigh 185 pounds, I'd say, okay, those would line up.

Accountability in Achieving Goals

00:01:47
Speaker
But so the people who have uphill goals and downhill decisions, I feel like I need to have people in my life like Aaron to tell me like, hey man, what you're doing is not adding up to what you want. And I think that's just good accountability and friendship. But there's a lot of people who don't understand that. And they continue to do what they're doing and expect different results. And that's insanity.
00:02:11
Speaker
So yeah, but it's not the exact definition of insanity. Yes. Yes. So I don't know what thoughts you have on that. You might not need to say anything about this in this simple step, but uphill goals, decisions.

Patience and Credibility in Goal Setting

00:02:24
Speaker
I feel like that is a lot of people's, we've talked about this. Um, we were to talked about it just a couple of weeks ago, like our pet peeves are like, what's our downsides and stuff. And one of mine is,
00:02:38
Speaker
Like, I can be so patient with people that are truly trying. Like, if your friend had told me he wanted to lose that much weight, you know, and you see him trying, and even if he's eaten ice cream, and he's just like, man, I feel so stupid about this. I just, this is not helping me, but I just have a weak moment. You're like, I can, and you see the word prior to, like, I mean, I am there, I am in. We all have a bad day.
00:03:07
Speaker
Yeah. Yep. We all screw up. theyre like I just need to see a little effort, like a little bit of effort, like on a regular basis. But if I see no effort and there's just constant like, oh, I want to do this. And then it's for me, it's like it's kind of like talking a huge game, but never falling through on any of it. It's like I shut off so fast. Like I will disengage.
00:03:32
Speaker
Like you, you, I mean, you can see it. Like I know Phillips called me out. I was like, you are not, and I'm not engaged because this guy has talked about this goal for two years and hasn't moved an inch. Yeah. Hasn't moved the needle. In fact, gone by opposite.

Aligning Actions with Goals

00:03:44
Speaker
Yeah, right so um So I yeah i'm with you on this like it's like if you are willing because people say when you have a goal And you speak it out loud and you start telling people your chances of happening are much greater And this is why because nobody wants to talk about this on the flip side Because if you don't the people around you are going to look at you like you're so a dork your credibility is ah is is lower than low, like you're losing credibility so quickly when you're doing this. So be careful on what you communicate. But I do think that statistics still shows like the more you communicate it, the more likely you are to follow through. And this friend of mine, I kept seeing constant ways of like he kept communicating it, but he kept doing the exact opposite. And I was like, just don't add those up, man. I just don't, it doesn't add up

Honesty and Support in Friendships

00:04:33
Speaker
to me. So, and then also have friends around you that will tell you like, Hey, your actions right now are not lining up with what you actually want. And I just want to address that. So, yeah, that's just a good friend. That's just a good friend. You've been listening to the uncommon wealth podcast. Thanks for
