00:07:49
Speaker
Cleveland's Own, Kissing Lilith. We got Gavin in the building. Hey, what's going on, ladies and gentlemen? How are we doing today? Tonight. and yeah and and and and we got and we get to And we get to pop a cherry tonight.
00:08:01
Speaker
Ooh. I feel dirty. The newest member of the band, bassist Zach. Hello. I'm ready to be popped. Never had a cherry pop like a good cherry popping party. That's all I got to say.
00:08:20
Speaker
I'm ready. I'm lubed. I got the lube, as we learned. Always time. He's playing us too much lube. What? As mom used to say.
00:08:37
Speaker
Anyways, what's going on, guys? How you been? holy shit, we've been we've been fantastic, man. um It has been a very busy... Probably the the last three months have been the busiest we've ever been. don't know, what do you think, Zach?
00:08:55
Speaker
I mean, the past three months are about all I've been in the band for. So yeah, I would say that, yeah, that's probably the busiest I've ever been with the band. Yeah. Well, I mean, you jumped in. But it really was. It really was, realistically. Like, actually,
Love and Life Milestones
00:09:09
Speaker
a lot of stuff going on between the last couple shows the year, the Cleveland Music Awards, Gavin's Wedding. There's been a lot, yeah.
00:09:25
Speaker
I've seen that on on social media the other day. Congratulations. Thank you. Best of luck. you know it's It's fun being married for about the first year or so. And then. Yeah.
00:09:36
Speaker
Well, it's going great so far. We've had a really, really amazing relationship. ah we We dated for a year and then we moved in. We bought a house together. We've lived here for a year in March. So two more months we'll be living together for a full year. And then, yeah, we just got married um two days ago. Saturday we got married or three days ago now. And um I mean, it was a really it was such an amazing wedding. Zach was there. I'm very fortunate that I met him in time to have him and his his lovely um woman, d
Busy Months and Positive Reception
00:10:09
Speaker
Amanda, be there. And it was just it was just an amazing night. You know, I couldn't be more grateful for everyone who showed up and for all the people that we had. There's just so much love in the air seeing all of our close friends and family um in in one place for one night.
00:10:25
Speaker
Oh, yeah, man. That's awesome. yeah and that That's really awesome. i you know we We got to hang out with you guys and meet you guys a few months back. and Yes. Got to meet the Miss Newell at that time, the future Mrs. And she was an absolute sweetheart. We had a we had a blast.
00:10:42
Speaker
That was a spur of the moment. I happened to stumble across that on social media. i instantly sent you a message. I was like, dude, you're five minutes. I'm there. i guess i canceled the Saturday night show. I said, sorry, guys. I'm going to see Kissing Lillard. You're on your I'm so glad they showed you today. It was such an awesome surprise to see there and get get to meet you. um I realized that we were right by you, or else I would have shot you a message sooner, saying that we were going to be there to kind of better plan things. But the fact that you canceled the show, just come see us, means the absolute world. That was actually, that was Zach's second show playing with us, and that was our third show.
00:11:18
Speaker
So he joined the band. About a month prior to our first show, we already had a fill-in bassist because we didn't want to overwhelm whoever became the official bassist of the band with learning everything.
00:11:29
Speaker
And then we played our first show. Zach was there. He got to watch us live and see the see the absolute shit show that that
Overcoming Show Challenges
00:11:37
Speaker
was. Not and necessarily our fault, but not not our fault at all. It was just the way that it was put together and for promote promoted and organized was not efficient.
00:11:49
Speaker
and all of our gear got blown up basically um whoever did it was outdoors and whoever the electrician was who hooked the generator to every to the sound and everything reversed the clarity all the negatives and positives were switched and it sent an electrical surge that almost destroyed cody's um guitar pedal board it up to whatever like the back part of it was but the pedals are fine it destroyed our filling basis his whole rig my smoke machines got blown out and then
00:12:22
Speaker
um I would have lost my microphone, but thankfully i was using theirs because mine wasn't, the signal was messed up. So it destroyed like half of our gear. And then all of the all the stage monitors were blown out. So I couldn't hear anything the first song. I had i was Kiss Me Kill Me. I was all over the place in my pitch, in my tune, because then I was pushing too hard and I was starting to burn myself up. So I had to go down into the crowd for the second song.
00:12:50
Speaker
So I could hear myself and like kind of find where I was again pitch wise. And then that's how it started. with us having the crowd on the stage with us jamming out while we played a cover Rebel Yell and we got a lot of amazing photos and videos, sold a bunch of merch, signed photos and autographs and whatnot. It was a great time. It was a great time in the sense we were probably the only ones who benefited from that. We still never got paid for that, by the way. I messaged the guy the other day because I had another band message me about it like, hey, can we get paid? I was like, no, we're not getting paid from that show. He declared bankruptcy. Yeah.
00:13:26
Speaker
The promoter needed to sell like 6,000 tickets to break even. Dude, they sold like 300. Oh, shit. oh Yeah, so... Ouch.
00:13:39
Speaker
That festival's never happening again. was going to say, that's a hell of a first experience. You get a bunch of equipment destroyed. You don't get paid. It sounds like it was... Oh, it did. It was the trial. Cody said... Cody has traveled so much touring with other bands. I want to say that he's gone out of the country.
00:14:00
Speaker
And he told me that is the worst show that he's... He's never had a show... that has gone so horrifically wrong, one thing after another. um Three other bands had their equipment destroyed on stage. The one band just stopped playing. It was insane.
00:14:17
Speaker
So Zach got to witness that and witness how we dealt with Under Pressure. and um And we still delivered. We still did the best that we could. and then he was on stage with us two weeks later, just just fucking killing it. I would love to hear him
New Bassist Audition: A Perfect Fit
00:14:31
Speaker
tell his story of the audit audition, but I want to tell my perspective really quick. He he came in with just the nastiest, sexiest looking face that I've ever seen. Just this glossy black and green. just like The thing looked like it was being taken over. It looks like it's being taken over by, um what what is Venom? What's his species called? A symbiote? A symbiote, yeah, yeah. It looks like it's taken over by like a symbiote. It's cool looking.
00:14:58
Speaker
And just like this kind of nerdy... nerdy Like just really like carefree dude just comes in just all smiling and shit. Like, all right, let's see what the kids got.
00:15:09
Speaker
e Not only does he play our songs perfectly note for note. But it's so perfect, I close my eyes, and it just sounds like you turned the bass up in the mix. There's no buzz in his, to like, there's no buzz when he's hitting the frets. The tone is perfect. It just sounds, it's so on. And then he busts out a cover of um Thousand Foot Crutch. What is the song again, Zach? What was it?
00:15:35
Speaker
Puppet, Thousand Foot Crunch. Not an easy song at all for any instrument, especially on bass. And he just just shreds it, just kills it. Another guy who auditioned, very sweet man, came in during Zach's audition. After Zach left, he looks, he's like,
00:15:51
Speaker
Well, that just killed all my confidence, but I'll still do what I can. and he ended up being a really cool dude, but like Zach just just annihilated the audition. And Cody and I went back and forth on it for like two days. And then we were all like why the hell are we having this conversation at all? And we got a hold of Zach, and we're all like, hey, come on.
00:16:09
Speaker
We want to talk to you more. We want hang out more. You're in the band. And he's just been a perfect addition since. But I want to hear his version of it really quick. I want to get his perspective, because I don't think I have yet.
00:16:21
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, i don't think I've ever really talked to you and Cody about like exactly how everything felt leading up to that. mean, I did tell you, i didn't tell Glick obviously because it's the first time i'm meeting him, but I found you guys on ah Facebook because I was actually friends with Cody already on Facebook along with a bunch of other people throughout the scenes. I think I was friends with Kyle ah Sellers as well. Yeah.
00:16:50
Speaker
on Facebook. um So I happened to be with my girlfriend at the time and I am scrolling through and I see, oh yeah, here's these random dudes, Cody and Gavin looking for a bassist and a drummer on
Zach's Audition Experience
00:17:06
Speaker
Facebook. And a I'm listening to and I'm like, oh shit.
00:17:11
Speaker
This is good. And i told i told my girlfriend, originally I wasn't going to try out. This is just a jokey thing. i i wasn't going to try out in quotes because I dated a girl once who went by Lilith for a while. but I was like, oh, kissing Lilith. so That's a a little bit of a throwback I don't want to i don't want to do.
00:17:36
Speaker
ah But then I tried out. I was honestly super nervous. i was a little shaky. It was the first time trying out for a band. I've been in bands before, um ah since like 14 years old. So going on 14 years now. But there was a little bit of a dry spell where I wasn't in a band for about a year and a half, two years. Tried out for Kissing Lilith.
00:17:57
Speaker
Was super nervous. They were both very open. to just like talk and chill out and super cool guys. ah They told me they'd get back to me. Next thing you know, i'm in the band watching them playing a show.
00:18:13
Speaker
um Gavin, I didn't tell you, I purposely didn't play that show because I knew it was gonna be bad that first show. and I'm like, I gotta protect my amp. i so I'm not loving that. I'm glad that you did, dude. I'm so happy that you did.
00:18:31
Speaker
But yeah, I went through, i actually, I didn't play um more than worth it when we did de the tryouts. no um We just ran out of time because we were just really, all three of us kind of just clipped together pretty well.
00:18:47
Speaker
Despite the fact that I was a little bit nervous about meeting these two random dudes at a random recording studio that I'd never been to. Uh... Well, he did get the office, and we were kind of stewing the kidneys. It ended up being... That's good.
00:19:04
Speaker
He's got, I was going to say, there are some ah shady parts of Cleveland. I mean. Yeah. Yeah. But it's funny that you say that you were nervous and you had never auditioned because that was actually something that we came across a lot. Where anyone, most not everyone, but most people who auditioned for drums or bass, um they told us that they were nervous and that this was the first time they've ever had audition for a band, which kind of took me and Cody by surprise just because,
00:19:34
Speaker
we kind of felt like i i don't know
Creating Music: Vision and Process
00:19:37
Speaker
what cody's you know history was with like the prosody and bands but for me you know it was a process of you had to show like hey you fit this a certain way in order to be a part of it um like even in my first band when i when i was in high school i mean dying desolation you know i was already in choir and show choir And I dress the part and act and look the part and that's where they're like, hey, you're going to be the guy for this.
00:20:01
Speaker
So it it was it was weird that a lot of people who played guitar or played bass and drums were all like, oh, yeah, usually I just tell people that I play bass and they're like, great, can you play this? Great. You're in the band kind of thing. There was no audition process. So that that was kind of um an interesting new perspective on the music scene around us.
00:20:19
Speaker
Yeah, if i if I can chime in on that too, because I think it is interesting. I do think that there are two kind of different types of bands around. There's the bands around that start with an idea for what the band will be, like a clear idea, like a Kissing Lilith idea of what what the band will be, what the sound will be, everything.
00:20:42
Speaker
And then there's the hey, we're friends, we really love playing music and we've been playing for years and we're at the end of high school or early college let's start a band and just build it up from the bottom so i think that' that's kind of where the two different perspectives come in yeah yeah i came from it it was just like i never tried out to like get an existing band it was just
00:21:14
Speaker
Hey, i'm kind of I'm kind of itching to play some music and write some stuff. Let's ah get together and... mean, it definitely started out. It 100% started out as a, hey, my name is Cody Miller and I'm super talented at guitar and your name is Gavin Kerr and I think you got pizzazz. Let's see what we can do together. And then I was all like, someone believes in me.
00:21:40
Speaker
ah and then ah And then from there we thought, okay, what's the sound going to be? had like five different demos and they all sounded alternative, but in very different ways. Like some was more like offspring kind of sound. Some was more like a disturbed kind of sound. Some was more like a tool kind of sound. Some was more like Rage Against the Machine. So they they all had that that to it, but different in different ways. And that's kind of how Kissing Love has developed today. And we're still developing, you know, I mean, the next song, What to Die For, you know, shooting the music video for that this
Evolving Band Identity
00:22:11
Speaker
weekend. It sounds extremely different than any of our other three songs. Like it is, if we would release it, you know, when when we release it, you'll hear it and you'll think, whoa, this is kissing Lilith, but this is a side that we have never heard before. Thank you so much for subbing.
00:22:27
Speaker
um Oh, yeah. Yeah. So, Gavin, I've got to ask you, since last time you guys were you guys were on here, dude, you guys have been, because you were just trying to get your name out there. You and Cody were just trying to figure things out.
00:22:41
Speaker
Yeah. Now you've done a few shows. You've started, because it was one of the things that we talked about, the potential down the road of adding members and and and having a full-fledged band.
00:22:53
Speaker
Did you think all all this was going to happen so fast? I mean, you guys are just kind of blown up. I knew that it would happen progressively and in a row. You know, like I knew, like we had very, very, so very set goals that we wanted to achieve in a certain order. I just wasn't sure how long it was going to take.
00:23:14
Speaker
Like there there were definitely times when I was all like, Ooh, I don't know if this is going to be a project where it's just me and Cody calling all the shots and doing everything. And we have hired guns now and again. um are for the shows i wasn't sure if it was just always gonna be fill-ins if it was just going to be a you know i wasn't there there's a lot of uncertainty on how this band was going to be run and developed and i just wasn't expecting everything to happen all at once and that's how it feels right now you know it's not even so fast it just happens like all at once like if we look at
00:23:47
Speaker
The year that we've been a band, technically releasing music and everything, there's a whole year behind that where we we're figuring ourselves out, where I'm posting stuff. But if you scroll back and you look at those posts, you're like, ah, this isn't Kissing Lilith. This isn't the band yet. I don't think we really became the band.
00:24:02
Speaker
um And so somewhere in between releasing More Than Worth It and releasing Kiss Me Kill Me, somewhere around there, probably after we like wrote the demo for Kiss Me Kill Me is when we really became Kissing Lilith.
00:24:17
Speaker
And when we really like, we were like, okay, this is going to be something that's going to work. And if you take that timeline and then you look at, okay, then we played three shows at the end of that year all sudden, then we added Zack as our official basis. And we we have someone in we out on someone in the line to play or to be our official drummer. He's got one more part of the audition process writing this next song with us. And then that will be that. um And then now we're doing the music video next week and we got the Cleveland Music Awards and it's like, and our our followers have shot through the roof and they're not just numbers, they're people and we talk to all of them. Anytime that someone follows, you know, I send them a message, hey, thank you so much. My name is Gavin from this area.
00:24:59
Speaker
It's so great. Where are you from? love the place where people comments, you know, it's weird looking at our numbers and looking at similar bands or artists that have higher numbers of followers.
00:25:09
Speaker
and half the engagement. Like we're truly building a community and it's growing faster and faster. each I can't tell how many times I've met someone like you um who has, or or like um Egg Pivot, a guy that runs a Discord that added a store Discord as
Strategy: Singles and Album Release
00:25:24
Speaker
moderators. and now that's part of our community too. like Just bringing these communities together is so unbelievable and it's starting to snowball in a really, really apparent way. And I'm just, we're all just doing our best right now to stay focused on, okay, what's the next step?
00:25:41
Speaker
What's the next step? We have these goals in mind for years down the line, but right now we're right here. So let's not focus on years down the line yet. Let's focus on what do I need to do today and what do I need to do by the end of the week?
00:25:55
Speaker
um yeah that's my perspective on it's zach's kind of been thrown in the middle of all of it he's just he's really been a trooper coming along for the ride yeah he just he just got thrown right into the fire it seems like like yeah that's pretty much true i mean you're talking like yeah you became kissing will started blowing up a little bit more slowly slowly slowly then faster than faster between more than worth it kiss me kill me and then Soon after that, it's like right before you're playing shows that I'm like, oh, I'm here.
00:26:29
Speaker
um I'm ready to weather the storm with you guys. So, Yeah, ah really quick, Arliss, I believe, I hope that's how say a name. yeah Are you going to be at the Clear Music Awards as an artist or as an attendee? Either way, we got to get a photo together. I can't wait to see that. It's awesome. And then I also saw a question about an ah album release. Yeah, i do have an answer for that. Yes, I did. I'm paying attention to you guys down in the comments.
00:26:56
Speaker
So we are going to continue releasing singles until we probably have about seven or eight singles released. And then we will release a batch of songs all at once that will be the album. So all the songs that are released right now as singles will be on the first album. um But we're going continue releasing them as singles because financially it makes sense. um It makes sense for VIP. Oh, fuck yeah. We will definitely get photos and hang out together. I'm excited.
00:27:26
Speaker
um but it it makes sense financially it makes sense as far as product goes because then we can really focus on each song and make sure that they're the best quality you know they get all the love and everything we can also then release merchandise for them um we can it helps us stay relevant know releasing material more consistently when we do release the song we've talked about loose plans for it uh some of ideas that we've done is you know the full album when it's released will feature like two brand new never heard songs um and then the kiss me kill me and i can um lipstick and gasoline are more than worth it re ah re re recordings of those will fully record them with scooter allen so they are now uh under they are now consistent with the rest of the songs and then they will have the scooter allen magic touch on them as well um the leaves are like revamped and
Cleveland Music Awards Nomination
00:28:19
Speaker
then two acoustic covers
00:28:22
Speaker
of songs as well so you'll get to hear two completely brand new songs two new versions of the original two songs and then two acoustic covers of the um of some songs you already know and love i we feel like that's a really great way to give to the audience you know material that is worth getting the album for and then also it's it's worth it for our time and money to make sure that we are not um we're not overextending ourselves, we're not putting too much on our plate to chew, because we've never done a big batch of songs like that yet. yeah You know, that will be six new tracks that we have to go forward and do and everything and figure out. We've just been doing singles and up until then we will have only been doing singles.
00:29:05
Speaker
ah So the the full album will probably have about 14 tracks total, with 10 of those being completely original songs, two of those being redo or re, however you want to say it, and then two of those being acoustics.
00:29:19
Speaker
Hell yeah. I dig it. That's something to look forward to, especially if you're a fan or a new fan. Arliss Walker is the lead singer of the Southern Outlaws band, and he will be hard to miss. He will be wearing a black cowboy hat with a giant rattlesnake wrapped around. I see his profile picture, and he looks like a force to be reckoned with. I'm excited, yeah yeah. I don't care what. Even though it's going to be February 1st, I expect him to to ride up in his Harley. Yeah. They will actually be on the show here in a couple weeks. They're going to come back here again. Awesome. I can't wait to see them.
00:29:56
Speaker
i think they'll be their third time on here now. what's all i got but Yeah, speaking of the speaking of the Cleveland Music Awards, which is awesome, and your guys' this first year, i know I know originally you guys were up for um ah best Best Alternative.
00:30:14
Speaker
Yes. And what was the new band? Well, I can't remember the third one was. Yeah. So there were a handful of categories that we were shooting for to get nominated as. So was trying to get nominated for Best Vocalist and then the Linoso game. Hell yeah.
00:30:33
Speaker
No, were trying to get Best New Artist, which we figured out of all the categories, that's the one that we would have gotten, considering this is our first real year as a band. um Best Alternative and then Best Metal.
00:30:46
Speaker
So I was expecting either Metal or New Band. I wasn't really expecting myself to get um Best Vocalist because I don't have enough material out there quite, and I don't think I've put out any... Yeah, I don't think I put out anything that's a lot revolutionary, but, you know, I wanted to throw my hat in the ring.
00:31:06
Speaker
But, yeah, we got best filter we got ah nominated for Best Alternative. So that's the category that we are really focused on right now. Nice. I got my vote in. They only let me vote one time, sons of bitches.
00:31:18
Speaker
I know. So the voting process is rough, and... To be completely honest, as much as we, and this this might be you know controversial to some people involved with the Cleveland Music Awards, but um as much as we would love to win, we don't expect to win heavily
Challenges in Voting Process
00:31:35
Speaker
because of the voting process. Every time that you have to click something, you lose 10% of your audience. And...
00:31:43
Speaker
to try to get people to vote is one thing you know it's it's like oh you know like maybe send me the link and make it super easy for me that's fine to get people to download an app is nearly impossible you gotta you gotta download the app and create an entire profile you have to have a picture you have to have a picture of you it cannot be your dog it can't be an avatar it can't be you and like all your buddies and you can't tell who's it's got to be a picture of you it's data collecting Yeah, and then... There's no way around it. like Yeah, then once once you vote, you got to you got to fill out another form. And I was like, wow.
00:32:18
Speaker
Personally identifiable information. I was like, they don't make it easy, but you know I ah threw my one vote in the ring. Maybe it'll make a difference. yeah maybe I mean, so we don't...
00:32:30
Speaker
to be completely honest, and this is a bit disheartening to say, we don't expect to win. ah Just because also, too, it's really weird who they identify as alternative. Like this one band, Recess, that's a pop band.
00:32:43
Speaker
adminus like i looked into them. they're very popular you know they're numbers wise they seem to be successful um we have very similar engagement which again that always weirds me out when someone who has so much more like followers has more engagements uh but i i just take it as we're doing our job very well you know that's all i take it as we have really amazing supporters and we can't be more grateful for you um but they they got a huge following they've been around for years and everything but they're definitely a pop band like they say all your thing
00:33:14
Speaker
But it's... if you were If you were to play them and us back to back, it'd be like musical whiplash for a second. It'd be like, oh, you're getting a shuffle. It almost feels like anymore these days, alternative is just...
00:33:31
Speaker
kind of where they throw bands, where they don't you know you they don't really know where to put them. Yeah, that's how I felt. um So, because last I checked, they were definitely in the lead just because of their following. And that's great, because that's the other thing, too. Because of the voting process, it is a shame. Not a lot of people are promoting.
00:33:48
Speaker
Like, if you go and you look at if you go to hashtag Cleveland Music Awards right now, we have more posts than even the Cleveland Music Awards. Yeah. And not only that, but i actually had to Google how the hell to vote on the awards, because I couldn't remember the name of the app.
00:34:04
Speaker
So I actually had to Google it. And it's they don't have a spot on the actual website that I found. Maybe I'm just an idiot, which is a very good possibility. I mean, even if you are an idiot, which you are not, but even if you are an idiot, it should be it should be unbelievably easy for you to vote. like it should be You should be deaf dumb, and blind and still be able to say who you like, all right? Yeah, yeah exactly.
00:34:29
Speaker
i don't I don't think you're stupid at all. i Correct me if I'm wrong, Gavin, but this is the first year that there's been an app for the voting. Yes. Yeah. yeah So it's like but it's been a slow rollout. It's been.
00:34:42
Speaker
A little bumpy, little delayed. yeah Oh yeah. Yeah, the first two weeks they had to um they had to shut down the app and they had to restart voting and everything because ah there there was people cheating, there was updates. like yeah Android couldn't vote all for the first two weeks, the app would crash. um There was a lot of problems. So as far as actually winning this,
00:35:03
Speaker
You know, we're not holding our breath on that. It'd be amazing we'd be so happy if we did. um But it's not going to slow us down or stop us or deter us if we don't win. The opportunities that have came from it are amazing. So first off, I feel validated enough just being nominated. i was going to say just being nominated and yeah and in your first year. And you guys, I mean, you're not like a full-time band right yet and in your first year being out there and you're on social media and you've got a couple shows under your belt that's a huge honor to just be dominant.
00:35:38
Speaker
the The last band that I was in you know the the ah the el lead singer he fired me right after they won the Cleveland Music Awards for best alternative band. he said i he said I was too young and inexperienced to go to the next level with them because they were getting ready plead incarceration and so one of my like things was a like I'm gonna make my own band and I'm going to get in the Cleveland fucking music awards I don't have to win it but I'm going to get nominated I'm gonna do it faster than you ever did and I did it took him three years it took us one well yeah that's fucking awesome yeah like they were nominated was amazing we got played in the radio we got put dude we are playing on fucking 107.3 alternative radio last Friday 9 PM live and local and they killed it. They did such an awesome intro for us. They they just like really like fleshed us out there for everyone to understand. And Scooter Allen, our producer,
00:36:32
Speaker
I've always known that he is amazing. When we heard the song on the radio, and don't get me wrong, the the other band that was played before us, Barry the Pines, really solid guys, really cool. like I've talked to them
Radio Exposure and Opportunities
00:36:44
Speaker
a lot. They're really talented, they're really cool. um they They got a really solid track that was played. The guys to their mind, like an anime opening and the guitar and it's fucking sweet. And it's like, yeah, this is like an anime opening. This is really cool. It's cheap.
00:36:59
Speaker
It's the difference in quality. I don't know what Scooter does. I don't know if he's sprinkling MSG in his like computer or what he's doing, but the just the overall quality of sound from their track to then our track, it was like, okay, they sound like a really, really solid local band that's going to be successful in something coming and they know what they're doing.
00:37:24
Speaker
Our track, to whatever Scooter did, it sounded like, oh, these guys have been touring for years and this is what a professional studio soundtrack or song is supposed to sound like on the radio.
00:37:35
Speaker
it It was insane and so it was just unreal to hear it. like To be played on an actual radio station too was just so amazing. So we got that. This Friday, Zack Cody and I are going to be on 107.3 Alternative at 8 a.m. getting a live interview done.
00:37:52
Speaker
That's awesome. That's so crazy. Where were you a year ago, 107.3, when I was putting them on? Like, it's so crazy. So we're going to be doing that. um That's an amazing opportunity. um All the followers have gone. Like, yeah I got to spend all day tomorrow just responding back and just sending messages to followers that we we've got, like, over 100 followers on TikTok, you know, just over the last, like, day and a half because of being played on the radio and because of me sharing... You know, my story and everything and and posting on social media so often the community has been so overwhelming about it. We're playing a show at the Roxy. That's another thing I can do. I can post the rest of these flyers. I started posting flyers all over Lakewood and then we had a goddamn blizzard and zero degrees out. So I got to go replace those flyers and post up more. um
00:38:38
Speaker
And then you know we're going to be on, I haven't sold the guys yet. All right, maybe I did. I did sell the guys. um Mark Razz, the man who's organizing it all, he wants us to be on his podcast you know sometime after the
Building a Fan Community
00:38:51
Speaker
Music Awards. So it's like there's so many amazing opportunities that haveve come from this and just being nominated in itself it's such a huge honor and shows us that you all really care about us and you are doing your part as the community to make sure that we are successful and we are continuing to grow i don't care about winning anymore i really i'm i'm just honored to be there i'm honored for everything else and i'm so touched by you guys
00:39:19
Speaker
yeah You guys are killing it, man. i mean Like I said, i I just happened to stumble across y'all last year and you have more more than worth it out there. and I was like, oh this is a cool song. I started looking at some of your videos and I was like, this kid's insane. I was just kind of and i was just kind of You know getting getting new to the doing this this particular show And I knew where I wanted to go with it So, you know and not only that but an Ohio band. I love the fact because it's it's wild i Bands in my own backyard shout out to Southern Outlaws because they're an Ohio band, too I think you guys are the only two bands from Ohio that I've had the pleasure of not only interviewing but getting to meet and actually building a friendship with But man, Ohio bands give me the biggest snub. So Ohio bands, what's wrong with you? but i got i got
00:40:06
Speaker
I got references. Yeah, yeah. I got a couple bands that I'll tell you to reach out to. We got some cool homies that you can talk to. and And it's so cool to support the, you know, I want to support all the independent and local artists as much as i can, but to do it in my own backyard. and and I consider all of Ohio in my backyard, is is so much more worth it to me. and and and And being able to come see you guys. I know ah you know getting the opportunity to come see you guys a few months back, and we're already planning on when we're going to see you there. Well, that not like I said, you have seeing you there that night was the best surprise. That was so awesome.
00:40:42
Speaker
i was I didn't know how you would react. I was a little nervous. I was like but it it was a great and it was a great show. It was such a fun experience. du you're you're a You're an entertainer on stage and you're and and you with the music itself. The music is one thing. put to and And I say this because this is literally my my hometown, so to say.
00:41:03
Speaker
A little hole in the wall bar. And you guys, it was like it was like being at a stadium show. It didn't matter. And you had fun with the crowd. Again, you did you did the cover of Rebel Yell and had everybody up there.
00:41:17
Speaker
And you know that was cool. And a lot more, you know, cool experiences that that we had with you with you guys. we We had a ball. I mean, Kayla, my girlfriend, she was still kind of relatively new to your guys' music. She's absolutely in love with it. She's she's like, you have again I talked to you about having you on, and I messaged her as soon as we confirmed the date, and she was all kinds of excited. I love that. Tell I said hi, please.
00:41:43
Speaker
She's laying on the bed smiling ear to ear right now. I love it.
00:41:48
Speaker
Yeah, no, I mean, yeah more than anything, you know, we we always want to entertain and we want to entertain and inspire and especially put on a show live. One thing that I've always stressed to Cody and to Zach and to anyone who is, you're when it's rigged if you don't, i we'll see. I mean, we we just we just need to get the votes. That's all it really takes. Thank you so much. That's so sweet to say. But the thing that I've always stressed to the guys is all like,
00:42:14
Speaker
the energy always needs to be flowing. one thing that I'm really big about is but One thing I'm really big about is It drives me insane when bands play and they're killing it on stage and then the song ends and then there's silence.
00:42:31
Speaker
Yeah. And the energy, the the energy will drop three times as fast as it rises during a concert. So I always make sure that every song flows into the other, where it's a guitar chord being hung out, whether it's the kick drum just going, whether it's me, you know, talking and saying something or a combination, there always has to be momentum.
00:42:50
Speaker
I'm really, really big on that. um and then i mean the band really is what allows me to be you know i'm only as good and the show is only as good as the bandmates and i tell them i'm okay i don't expect any of you to have the same amount of flair or energy that i do but you need to be 60 70 percent there with me you really have to be you know it's got to be like a pyramid you're gonna have that strong base of the drums the that's strong the strong foundation and then the guitar on the bass because they need to be feeding off each other and then i knew be at the tippy top just commanding the crowd and zach and cody do such a phenomenal job of complimenting me on stage i really couldn't be
00:43:31
Speaker
um i I couldn't find better bandmates. you know When I turn around, I know exactly where they are and they're always moving, they're smiling, they're focused, they're having a great time. They're not just standing, they're staring at their instruments. They're looking at the crowd, they're looking at each other, they're looking at me. They are a part of the show as much as I am and they play the roles perfectly.
00:43:52
Speaker
i've said it I've said it time and time again on here. you know and And I hate to keep using them as an example, but it is what it is. that That stage presence will make or break a kind a concert. And I still am. I'm a huge fan fan of Stain.
00:44:07
Speaker
um First time I seen him, though, Aaron Lewis literally did an entire set just like this the whole time. He didn't move. He just sang every song. And I was like, this is fucking trash. I'll never pay to see these guys again.
00:44:21
Speaker
Well, five fast forward 20 some years and you you hear his story in in the record labels and all this, that and the other thing.
Significance of Stage Presence
00:44:29
Speaker
I see him again. I didn't even know they were going to be at Louder Than Life. I went there to see Guns N' Roses and they were there and it was like a complete 180 turn of the band. I was like, I'm back in.
00:44:37
Speaker
I'm back in. They got me back because Aaron was all over the stage. he was having a good time. But yeah, that that that stage present is just as important as the songs you're singing. Because if you're not having fun... music has to be there. The music really has to be there. Cody always says that. do He's always saying the music has to be there and then we can work on showmanship.
00:44:55
Speaker
And Cody and Jack, they do a phenomenal job of making sure the music is there. But my my opinion is if I want to hear the music perfectly and exact, I'll listen to the record.
00:45:07
Speaker
If I go to a concert, I expect a fucking show. And if I don't see a show, I'm not going to that concert again. Yep. Exactly. And and being in there being in the crowd, and I'll say this is, you know, witnessing it, being in the crowd, it's a workout in the crowd because you can't not have fun. You can't not, like, I wanted to take pictures and videos and I was like, gotta put my phone away. I'm having too much fun. Good.
00:45:34
Speaker
the world Oh my God, thank you. Yeah. its Gavin, you mentioned too that Toadie and I don't have to be, or in any band. like the the The showmanship takes it to the next level, obviously. And then the remaining band members, as long as they're 60%, 70%, not expected to be hamming it up 100% of the time.
00:45:58
Speaker
But I don't think anybody could ah match your flair and energy. Somebody else's 100% is your 50%. like somebody else is a hundred percent is like you're fifty percent <unk> It's Dude, I haven't even... I've been completely stone-cold sober for these last three shows, too. Just wait. For this next show that we do, I'm going to take probably a blue chew and a dry scoop of pre-workout beforehand, and I'm going to rip... I'm going to literally rip that place apart. I'm ready for it. Yeah. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:46:35
Speaker
Yeah, like I'm um um'm ready to be goddamn animal on that stage. you've seen You've seen completely sober Gavin on stage. And I will always be sober, you know, sober on stage. I don't drink beforehand on the smoke and I don't do any kind of drugs or anything. um I do drink and in smoke, but not before a set. yeah But i'll so I'll totally caffeinate myself.
00:46:57
Speaker
Like, I'll caffeinate myself so I'm like Ghost Rider. I would just lose my mind. Yeah.
00:47:06
Speaker
oh that's i don't um Thank you so much, Cameron. youre yeah you're You're a gem. i appreciate you. Yeah, like like Zach said, i yeah you're you're you're I can't imagine you hyped up on caffeine or everything that matter. going to give you more energy. It's scary.
00:47:26
Speaker
it's It's scary, man. like there there There are times when I'll do that at home just for like the gym or something. I'm so trying to go for a new PR push myself. you know I'll dry-script that pre-workout before I go there, and I'll come home. I'm just like...
00:47:40
Speaker
but but but and And now he's like, I'm in danger. Oh, no. I'm like, yes, you are, little woman. I'm to let the cat out of the room really quick. He's meowing.
00:47:55
Speaker
jasper So, Zach, I want to ask you, being the newest guy there, you said you know you you've been in other bands. You've been playing for a little bit. You took a little bit of a hiatus. So far, I mean โ How does this compare to anything you've done before? I mean, any I'm not going to lie. but This is not a negative to any of my other previous bandmates, but this does kind of kissing Willis blows it all away.
00:48:21
Speaker
as far as the show energy, the songwriting, just everything. It's it's a very good time. yeah i I'm very excited for the future with kissing Willis. I think that this is really Ideally, maybe the last man that I do. Who knows? that's yeah I hope so. I hope that this i hope that this is the last.
00:48:47
Speaker
i I just got married yeah the other day. you know This is the love of my life. This is the woman I spent the rest of my life with. And I'm the man. That that being said.
00:48:58
Speaker
With that being said, kissing Lilith is 100% my mistress, and I never want to leave her. so Natalie always comes first, but that the music is a very close second, and um I think this project is going to be the project.
00:49:16
Speaker
Yeah. and and you know to to And she seems like she's 100% on board, fully supportive, and to have that in your corner as well. Unbelievable supportive.
00:49:28
Speaker
there were she asked me all the time she goes when did you decide that you were going to marry me and i always i'm like there was never a specific moment but i can tell you exactly you know when that choice was confirmed it was it's the way you support me when i'm excited about something it's the way you encourage me when i'm when i'm upset about something or unsure about something it's the way that you admit when you're wrong and forgive me when i'm wrong it's the it's it's the way that we communicate with each other and you know ah my my last part in a previous to her um the one that um the one that lipstick and gasoline is about uh carly she would just tear me down every chance that we got there was one time that we went to uh went to shoe store
00:50:18
Speaker
And someone that I went to high school with was working the counter. i'm like, oh, hey, how you doing? And they weren't very like responsive. And so I'm like, oh, maybe they don't like me anymore. Maybe they're having a bad day. You know, whatever it is, I'm not going to push it. We get back in the car and ex looked at me and she goes, that was awesome. I'm like, what? She goes, it's so great just to see see someone not so excited to see you for once.
00:50:39
Speaker
And it it was things like that all the time. And so now to be to be with a partner and a woman that is just unbelievably supportive in me in every single way, like she...
00:50:53
Speaker
She doesn't question, she doesn't worry, she doesn't, um but aside well she's just completely in my corner. I couldn't be more grateful for that. And it's so nice too, because I look at Zach and his relationship with Amanda and she's, same thing from what I can tell. She's always at the show, she's right there. you know She has messaged me multiple times and saying, hey, thank you for loving Zach so much and being so accepting to him. Because we do, we we love Zach so much and She has messaged that. She has, she has. Yeah, and it's so awesome that I have the support and I get to see, you know, my dear friends and bandmates have the same supports and we get a, we're, we have a community ourselves, you know, we have the community of the band, Kissing Wolf and all our fans and you and like, and other bands and stuff like that.
00:51:42
Speaker
But then within ourselves, we ah we have built a community and that that's so amazing. Yeah, that's that's awesome, too. you know we We try to do the same thing here with with the network that we're doing. you know these These are a part of our... These aren't just followers and crazy people in the chatter chatter's box. These are our fucking friends, and they're there every show, and they support all of our shows that we do here, and they join into our our degenerate activities and stuff like you know and and to have that. And then on on the backside of it,
00:52:17
Speaker
the four of us that are in this network together you know we might have our little tiffs and scuffles but we we settle behind the scenes and but we're a big family you know we all have the same goal in mind and that makes it so much better and like Kayla is one of my biggest cheerleaders you she's usually if I'm doing a show she's right back here on the bed and I'm not used to that I'm not used to having you know a live audience so to say and support me and if I don't do a show. She's like, why aren't you doing the show? You got to show it. I'm like, yeah, I really got the mood. I'm not in the mood for today. So yeah, man, it's, it's amazing to have that all around community and have the the people and and like you guys, man, you guys taking a chance on me and coming up, not, not just once, but now twice and and everything like that. It makes everything so much better for, to do, to do what you're doing. It's like,
00:53:07
Speaker
Maybe I do have a purpose. Maybe, you know, well, not not only a good person You very very easy to talk to you. You're genuinely very supportive of us and for the most part You've got the shit together like it's been really awesome to watch you grow. That's really cool What's discouraging is you know when you know bands do an interview with someone or something and it's just kind of thrown together and and then it's not really promoted afterwards like that or anything or they expect to you to do the promotion and it's just The effort isn't there.
00:53:38
Speaker
And it's very apparent, not only in the quality of the show, but then in the quality of the fan engagement and what happens with that. So the fact that you have you know all these comments popping up while we're doing this and the fact that I've got to watch your follower count grow and everything, and I've noticed that that the content is getting better, whether it's in the video quality the audio quality, that inspires me and makes us want to come back to you. That makes you and your show very attractive. So I love that you're doing that i hope that anyone who's watching this you know, they see that and they get inspired to start thinking, okay, what can I do to make fans want to come to me and reach out to me? Because we reached out to you the first time, right? Yeah. i think I think I followed you guys and then we got to talking and then you brought up the ah the idea of you guys coming on and I was like, yeah sure hell yeah. Yeah. yeah
00:54:27
Speaker
Yeah. so Because like you said, he does respond to everybody who follows them. I try to follow that path myself, but it's, you know, Unfortunately, I still have a nine to five and and I got kids. Don't have kids.
00:54:40
Speaker
not Not for a long time. Have kids if you want to have kids, but wait. Yeah, yeah we we definitely want have kids, but for now we're just practicing. yeah Yeah, right? Practice all, yeah do all the practice that you want. I love my kids to death and they're great. But, you know, so I've got other responsibilities, and i but I try to interact with with people as much as I possibly can and hit the, you know, somebody comments at least something as simple as a like.
00:55:05
Speaker
Or, hey, thanks. Goes a long way. You I know how excited I am if I comment on somebody's, ah you know, another podcaster or a band. If I just drop a fire emoji and they're like, hell yeah, bro. I'm like, hell yeah, hey. They acknowledge me. It means the world to just open that door for connection.
00:55:24
Speaker
So, yeah. But you guys got the music awards. Yes. You got brand new video. What's going on with that? I mean, if you're not following their social media, baby steps. Baby steps into Kissing Lilith before you get to the new project. Yeah, yeah, yeah. ah let Let me run the ad for you. All right, you ready?
00:55:50
Speaker
Do you like blood allergies, flesh suspension, setting people on fire? Do I have a video for you? Coming to you this February.
00:56:01
Speaker
Kissing Lily. What to die for. yeah yeah um I mean, and that that's what it is. You know, we, we raised just over $3,500 from fans, either selling merch or donating and to pay for this video. The camera got delivered today.
00:56:21
Speaker
A big portion of that a big portion of that budget was the camera. It is a It is a high speed, super zoom, slow motion camera. This is a, this is a Marvel level cinematic camera. When you, i so I looked at the footage of it, and like their reel that they did for last year, they were showing snow falling.
00:56:46
Speaker
You could see the individual crystals on the snowflakes. It was so gorgeous. That's a insane, dude. This camera is fucking mint. Like it's top of the line was probably a little over half of our budget was renting this camera for this video.
00:57:01
Speaker
and there's ah there's a huge story behind it and there's a lot going into this. It is the most, I dare to say that this is the most ambitious music video that any band has ever done.
00:57:13
Speaker
And trying not to get overwhelmed talking about it, but I've been waiting for it. Yeah, it's exciting. I've been waiting for it for you know a year, a bit over a year now, and it's next weekend.
00:57:28
Speaker
We have probably almost three dozen people for this blood orgy scene. I'm very excited for that. They're going to be wearing half man or half animal masks.
00:57:39
Speaker
um There is going to be a lot of nudity involved. No frontal nudity, but you might see some booty cheeks. no no it's um But it's it's going to be done in in a tasteful way.
00:57:52
Speaker
It's a very intimate video. It's a very emotional video. My goal is by the end of it. Anyone who watches the video and listens to the song, i want to provoke the emotion or I want to ah provoke the feeling of finishing a really intense cry that that final big breath after sobbing. I want you to feel that when you listen to the song and see the video. And I also want anyone, you may hate the video, but you can't stop listening to the song, or you may hate the song, but you cannot look away from the video. That's what I'm trying to provoke with this.
00:58:30
Speaker
I will be performing flush suspension for the first time. We're going to put four meat hooks in my back. They're 16 gauge, i almost about as thick as a mechanical pencil. We're going to put four hooks in my back and we're going to hang me about four or five feet off the ground.
00:58:46
Speaker
um And then we are going to set me on fire in this huge throne that a fan donated to the chair and I got the pleasure of turning it into the throne.
00:58:58
Speaker
um So it's going to be a very intense. I want Ronnie Radke to see this video and shit himself. Yeah. Like I want him to look at this video and just be all like, move up.
00:59:10
Speaker
fuck are these guys like mind from it. on But Friday is the first day. Friday is going to be such
Ambitious Music Video Plans
00:59:18
Speaker
a busy day. We have the interview at 8 a.m. on 107.3 Alternative. And then we're going to go shoot the band part of the video. So me, Zach, Cody, and Nathaniel Hubler, who is currently the main audition for drums right now.
00:59:35
Speaker
Phenomenal drummer. He's a human metronome. He's really, really cool personality. He's more of a quiet guy, but we don't hate that. we We like that someone's got a little more control yeah hoton yeah and yeah yeah we're really solid dude he's doing great so far we just want to hear him right and that'll be what he's going write on this next song with us and that'll be the determining factor if he's officially a member or not but um yeah so he's going to be there with us we're going to shoot the band shoots so all of us playing the song play like 40 times do individuals do his group do a photo shoot and then from there
01:00:11
Speaker
We will go and we will play a show at the Roxy in Lakewood. Doors open at 6.30. Tickets are available at the door for $10. I believe we're going to be the last band playing. The show starts at 7.
01:00:23
Speaker
So from 8 a.m. m to probably 9 10 we're going to be doing band stuff all day. That's Friday. that's friday that's a long day yeah then the next day saturday we are shooting the blood orgy scene with all the extras um and natalie she has a role in it she is the she's the angelic figure that depicts on paint all these things happening and then he's going to be one that saves me at the end of the video and extinguishes the flame and and brings me
01:00:58
Speaker
That's going to be shot on on Saturday, a lot of her scenes and the blood orgy scene. And then Sunday is the big day. Sunday is when we do the flesh suspension. We have Jen, who's going to be the maiden of Lilith, with only people who watch this get to see what she's wearing. Let me grab it really, here.
01:01:19
Speaker
Real quick. Yeah.
01:01:22
Speaker
This is the mask that I got for John. um Nice. That's awesome. her her new um Her new maiden of Lilith mask. I made her original one.
01:01:34
Speaker
And then I bought this one. i got it on Etsy. It was made out in in Germany. I can't remember exactly who made it, they did a phenomenal job. ah So Jen is going to reprise her role as the Maiden of Lilith.
01:01:45
Speaker
She was the cover for Kiss Me, Kill Me, now the woman in that photo shoot. That was her. She was awesome. I think she's so amazing. She was at our wedding. She has a heart of gold. She's such amazing An amazing woman. i'm so I'm so honored to have her. She was in another music video that I wrote indirect and co-directed that never got released in that previous band. So I was ah i was like, you know what?
01:02:09
Speaker
She's too talented and was such a great sport about the entire thing and has that look that I cannot, I cannot not have her in this video. I cannot not have her a part of this project. So because the first round took a shit, I was like, I, she has to be a part of this. And we have such an amazing crew. we have such an amazing team putting this together.
01:02:26
Speaker
But Sunday is going to be that big day where I do the flesh suspension and we set me on fire and we put the whole story together. And, um, yeah I'm nervous. I'm nervous for you, man.
01:02:39
Speaker
I'm nervous for the flesh suspension. If someone needs to be burned or suspended by my flesh, I'm excited. going to need you to check in with me Sunday evening and let me know you're okay everything. If call in sick that day, Zach is the one that we're going to hang up and set on fire. Oh, Jesus.
01:03:07
Speaker
yeah know I wasn't prepared for this. sort It's in the fine print of your contract. that's what That's what being a rock star is all about, I guess. You can't complain. When you sold your soul to kissing earth, you also volunteered your body to be hung and set on fire on days like Gavin is sick.
01:03:28
Speaker
didn't You didn't realize you were going to be Gavin's stunt double. No, idea I didn't. they I'll just i can do it. I'm just going to get like a ball cap or something going. yeah It might melt. I don't know if you want a ball That's true. Dude, they're going to be like one and like one and a half to two foot flames all over my body. This is going to be real fire. And it's going to burn for a good minute to two minutes on me. Like I'm going to legitimately set on fire.
01:03:57
Speaker
or i've been so My whole body has been set on fire before. um And the longest that I've been set on fire purposefully is like five seconds. Five seconds is a long time to be set on fire. that would be my hand.
01:04:13
Speaker
This is going to be probably about half my body for minutes. yeah that's that's Yeah, man. yeah You're going to have to let me know you're okay Sunday evening. mean Yeah, by way I I'm going to be over here like, full dad mode panicking all week and going, oh, is you okay? Is he all right? Did say it was this week? I mean, it was last week and it all went perfectly. and yeah yeah like it's It's all done. It's great. You know? yeah No, that' the video sounds awesome. I know we talked a little bit about it when when we met and and watching the social media. and dude it's It's just anything, man. It's like go big or go home. This is just... yeah we
01:04:57
Speaker
All the cards are on the table right here, right now. I wanted to tell a story. I love telling stories in videos and in art. And I wanted to do something that not only very few people are willing to do, that even fewer lead singers are willing to do.
01:05:16
Speaker
And two things that I thought of was okay, setting myself on fire and flush suspension. And I was like, let's make sure that nobody ever copies this video or takes this idea. And I'm going to do both of them.
01:05:30
Speaker
Have you ever done flush suspension before? No. okay You know Xbox when the achievement thing comes up on the screen? You're gonna get gun locked. Yeah, I've heard it's extremely euphoric. I've heard that it's like the best sex you've ever had because your body just dumps all of its adrenaline in such a short time.
01:05:52
Speaker
I might have to take your word for that. yeah I'll let you know. yeah I am 300 pounds. You are not putting hooks in my body and hanging me from the ceiling. Oh, I know people. I know people your size and bigger who have done it and they have. grant time I've seen Hellraiser. I know what those hooks can do when they tear the human flesh off of a body. I'm good.
01:06:12
Speaker
It'll heal. Okay. If it makes you feel any better, if it makes you feel any better, each hook can hold like 120 pounds.
01:06:22
Speaker
give or take, it's between like 90 and 120 pounds. I only weigh about 180 and we're using four hooks. So we're definitely doing overkill with the hooks. so And that makes you feel any better about it. Like I could definitely get away with two hooks, no problem. So what we're using for just for safety.
01:06:39
Speaker
And also like people don't think about that too. So they're gonna like, oh my God, it's four hooks. That's crazy. like Yeah, two hooks would be more dangerous. Yeah, right. Sarge asked, and right now, I mean, you guys have gotten three shows under your belts. Obviously, you plan on doing more. um But you've been you've been down to Central Ohio. You've been down in Columbus. You've been down in Newark. Obviously, you've done some stuff up there, and you're going to be doing some more stuff up there.
01:07:06
Speaker
um So to answer that question is kind of for for now, yes, right? Or do you have anything Yeah, so we plan, actually plan on getting out of state. We plan on hitting um New York, ah the state, not the city. It's a little too far for us right now, but we would like to get there eventually. on New York State, we plan on hitting. um We would really like to get to Detroit. I would love to get Chicago. That's my favorite city, of Chicago. West Virginia probably looks good. PA a looks really good for us getting this year. And then we already have couple, we we have about half a dozen shows.
01:07:43
Speaker
that are either confirmed or just about to be confirmed. Like we just haven't gotten that final green light yet. And those are all throughout Central and Northeast Ohio. we have We have two rules with booking shows, you know, other than like the standard, like, oh, it needs to make sense for like the crowd or the pay or whatever it is. know, the two big rules that we have is we won't play the same city within within four months.
01:08:07
Speaker
So we play in you know if we play in January, then we won't play again until you know January, over March, April, until May, we won't play that city again. So we can't be within four months.
01:08:18
Speaker
And then we also won't play the same city more than twice in a year. So if we're coming to Columbus and you're in Columbus, you better come see us because that's probably going to be your only opportunity that year to see us. We live in the Cleveland area. I know Zach and I live in the Cleveland area. Cody lives in Akron. or probably We're definitely going to play Cleveland and Akron once, maybe twice. And that second time is only if it is a big opportunity, it's something really cool. Like in Cleveland, we have our shows booked for this year, which sucks because we have a lot of cool bands and opportunities. We're like, we're already playing our two shows this year. We have the Cleveland Music Awards and then we also have our the Cleveland Mayhem Festival.
Performance Strategy: Location Diversity
01:08:58
Speaker
in June or July. So we we got those two shows in Cleveland and that's it. Unless unless Ronnie Madkey sees the music videos and like, I want them to play with me in October in Cleveland, we're not playing in Cleveland again in 2020. We have one show booked in Akron. We've already started talking about the next show in Akron. That's going to be our two shows.
01:09:20
Speaker
So when we come to your area, please, we would love to see you there because we're not going to be there again anytime soon. Like, even though we're a local band, we are treating this like we are touring.
01:09:33
Speaker
Yeah, do like I did. Drop everything, drop all your responsibilities and run out the door and just... Yeah, quit your job, put your kids in foster care, and get to the show! yeah you are perspective You're not a real fan! Do you even like us? No, like...
01:09:51
Speaker
Are you even a fan? Cut all this out and just destroy our entire image. I'm just clipping that that one part. I'll be like, yeah do you really want to be a fan of this band? Did you hear the horrible things they said? I'll save it. The archive. Your team's going to be there every day.
01:10:09
Speaker
yeah yeah yeah The headline for it is Satan worshipping Cleveland band kissing Lilith. Gaslights their audience into supporting them. I'll just wait until you guys get real big and then I can be like, aha, now it's time. Yeah, wait until we're still on the stadiums and then you can cash in that black man.
01:10:33
Speaker
It'll all be AI by then. Yeah, right, exactly. Everybody's going to be gone. We're going to be plugged into the grid. or yeah We're going to matrix the shit out of this. Oh, yeah.
01:10:45
Speaker
yes Yeah, man. I don't think I could ever be as good as I am. So I'm good. I'm safe. Good. No. No one can ever mimic or replicate you. No. I don't know if they'd want to. But I'm excited for you guys, man. You got a lot going on. I know they got some shows coming up this summer. Yeah.
01:11:09
Speaker
i don't I've already been told, and and not that I needed to be told, but we're going to make it out and see ah so some of the shows, even if we've got to travel a little bit. That's kind of my rule that I have with the bands that I have on here. I'll travel...
01:11:22
Speaker
three, maybe four hours at most. You don't even need to do that. We're gonna be in your area for the Rock Out Camp out this summer. Yeah, we're we're already we're already making plans.
01:11:32
Speaker
Good, good. That's gonna be amazing. I can't wait for that. That's gonna be a long weekend for us. We have that. So we have that festival one day, the day that we're playing. And I believe the day before that, we have another festival about an hour away the that we're gonna be playing, ah the the the Beard Competition. I can't remember exactly what it's called, but I i gotta to look into that and I will let you know about that one. Yeah, you have to let me know this Is that Columbus area?
01:11:58
Speaker
It's... Oh no, west. most of us So it's it's like, sorry, not west. um Yeah, yeah, west. Yeah, it's like northwest of Columbus.
01:12:09
Speaker
Okay. Yeah, I can't remember exactly where it is. I'll get the info on it. We'll post about it as well. But we're going to play that show, camp out there, and then drive over to Newark for the Rockout Campout. Nice. And we'll play our show there. Yeah. yeah i had to orchestrate to organize and orchestrate that between promoters and everything to make sure that we're able do both shows because they're awesome opportunities. And you know that that'll also give us sort of a taste of touring together, you know being on the road like that. yeah yeah Get on the road for a little bit.
01:12:38
Speaker
You said about an hour away and and somebody perked up over here and went, so hanging out with you that weekend. Yeah, yeah. Let's spend the weekend together. Let's get crazy, man. Yeah, man. That'd be a good time.
01:12:52
Speaker
ah So what else, you guys? What? What? i just got i just got I just got a one-finger salute. um
01:13:05
Speaker
but ah Does Zach have a complete set of insolence? It's a complete set of Berserk. ah
01:13:16
Speaker
Berserk? Anybody? Yeah, what is Berserk? Cody needs to be on this call. Berserk with Guts. You got your my man Guts in here?
01:13:27
Speaker
Some the um comics?
01:13:32
Speaker
Zach, you're so funny. Oh, nice.
01:13:37
Speaker
Zach is most interesting people I've ever met. So we have, with your permission, Zach, can I tell them our inside joke? ah Sure, why not? Go for it. we have that We have this ongoing joke in the band that Zach is just magical and has the biggest dong ever.
01:13:58
Speaker
like you like Because here's the thing. So he's in the band. He's the perfect bass player. He has a unbelievably loving, supportive, very gorgeous Gothic girlfriend.
01:14:15
Speaker
And he's a fucker i love her he's a fucking rocket scientist at NASA. He's just winning at life. yeah a day but hes should He's just winning at life. It's insane. I sat in the group chat the other day that Zach is the key to our success. We are not going to successful because of how supportive our fan base is or how talented we are or charismatic or marketing. We're going win just because of Zach's big dick energy alone. I had to get a new car today. Mine took a shit the day of the wedding. It completely died. I had engine locked had to get new car today. And I was like,
01:14:54
Speaker
I'm going to post about my new car tomorrow and Zack is really going post some that. Him standing next to the Millennium Falcon with the caption, oh yeah, pants of this used piece today, little antique thing to add to my
Zach's Unique Influence
01:15:06
Speaker
collection. Got it $19.99 in a Snickers bar. He's just winning at life all the time. It's insane. So when he shows me things like his encyclopedias of Berserk, I'm just like, dude, you need to be, that you need to be the new man in the um what's that beer commercial the most interesting man in the world oh yeah do second he yeah de yeah yeah yeah that's zach yeah yeah zach's over here with a dose like he's like i don't always go from the window to the wall but when i do i do to the sweat trips down my balls scheme
01:15:47
Speaker
execut amazing but You mentioned Rock on the Range. I noticed that comment there. We were going to play all these festivals. We were really, really hoping to get on to incarceration this year.
01:16:04
Speaker
we They did release the lineup. So I am assuming it's too late for that. But the connections that we have and when this music video comes out, it's not too late until the show happens.
01:16:15
Speaker
yeah But I will say, if we do not get on this year, It is going just like it was my mission to get us into the Cleveland Music Awards.
01:16:26
Speaker
It will be my mission to get us into incarceration next year. oh yeah And we're not going be playing some, you know, where to like, and any any position there is fantastic. We're not going to be playing some bullshit after party or pre-show kind of thing. No, we are going to be one on on one of those main stages dripping blood sweat and tears with the rest of those amazing bands on one of those three days friday saturday or sunday i promise you that if it is not from it if it is not this year it will be next year yeah that sweat is coming straight down our balls on that stage boy yup and we'll have it to pour it down with afterwards that is a ah that is a bold prediction but yeah not all that crazy to think about considering
01:17:13
Speaker
this first year for you guys yeah i mean like i said you know when you guys came on last year you were just kind of doing your thing still figuring out what you're doing who you were like you said as a band you know you were and now like i'm i'm blown away by it to to just watch and go wow i remember when it's only been a year it's like damn they did all this in a year And then to see you rock out on stage was amazing. I mean, it's just like, it's crazy how much, ah you know, can change in a year and where things go and and in a year.
01:17:48
Speaker
Because i not it's We say it every every January. Wow, where'd the year go? You know? So... i mean it's it's not just a bold statement it's a crazy statement and we are fucking mental and we are in love with the journey you know it's really not about the destination we set very clear goals um but we are most definitely in love with the process of it all well that's something kayla and i've been talking about we want to go up there to ink so bad so that gives us even more of an incentive and more reason to go
01:18:21
Speaker
Oh, no, I would love that. Jersey asks, where's the accent originally from? So there are three answers to this. um The the shortest shortest answer that I just give people when I don't feel like answering it don't have time to answer is whatever Johnny Depp has.
01:18:41
Speaker
yeah this is is is refresh it and that And that is the reaction I always get, which allows me to transition conversation or walk away.
01:18:53
Speaker
um the The next answer that I don't give as often, um but I still give don't have a lot of time, is my mom is Irish. Which is true, she is redhead, blue-eyed, she is very Irish, um but she doesn't have an Irish accent and she's from Ireland. So the reason why I don't give that one as often is because then people ask me, oh, what part of Ireland, when was the last time you were over there? And then like, okay, now I actually have to lie. Because I don't want to explain myself. And I'm all like, oh, Dublin, cheers, gotta to go. like yeah But when i it's not it's not an Irish accent either, but I do. The way that I speak and why i speak this way is because,
01:19:30
Speaker
I threw out customer service, threw out moving from Arizona to the country of Ohio, to the ghetto, to the suburbs, back to the hood again, just going back and forth.
01:19:45
Speaker
Everywhere go, people have spoken differently around me and I've never been able to keep up or adapt the lingo. And so eventually I got frustrated. I thought to myself, why do people speak the way they do?
01:19:58
Speaker
it's because of pact mentality and survival instinct. It's being a part of that tribe, ah that being a part of that tribe and being together and that familiarity. If you have someone who's from another country and they come to America or they go to another country, yes, eventually they will pick up that accent or they will start to develop the senses of that accent.
01:20:21
Speaker
So I thought to myself, okay, I don't have a tribe. I don't have a pact. i don't really know where I belong. I know things that i love to do.
Gavin's Diverse Interests
01:20:31
Speaker
I love to cook. I love to make music. I love to, we're going to celebrate with you at Inc. on your birthday when we get there, because we will get there.
01:20:40
Speaker
um I love all these different things and they don't come from my parents. you know at the wedding the other night my mother i made her speak I told her hey I would love for you to say something at my wedding and she reiterated my sense says I hate public speaking i don't know where you from like ah how you don't say and do what you do so growing up I never had an exact group of people or community to conform with.
Unique Accent and Speech Patterns
01:21:09
Speaker
And so with my speech, I started to listen to other people from all over and think, what do they do and say that I love?
01:21:20
Speaker
What about their speech resonates with me specifically and kind of like hits them up like, ooh, love that. And I have adopted all of those things throughout probably a decade and a half now.
01:21:36
Speaker
See, I'm 26 right now. So yeah, yeah, about a decade and a half, maybe even almost two decades, I've adopted that habit of hearing things that I love, sayings, phrases, pronunciations, rhythms and patterns of speech, and I adopt those and make them mine.
01:21:52
Speaker
And that has over time curated the way that I speak. It is a it is a Gavin accent.
Engaging Performances with Voice Inflections
01:21:58
Speaker
It is my, oh no, Zach fell. Zach fell. It really is a Gavin accent.
01:22:03
Speaker
Yeah and people ask me like oh is it Australian, oh is it Irish, oh is it Scottish like they'll ask me and I can do all those accents you know fairly well and when I do them you're like oh it definitely isn't that accent because that accent is more nasally, that one is more guttural, that one is more in the soft palate, that one like so that is the long true answer of why I speak how I speak and where am i accent has came from because we all have accents. Mine is just very specific to me it's it's one of a kind it's it's it's one of it's one of the it's one of the many things that make you who you are and it just goes right into your ah stage presence as ah as a lead singer and everything like that it just adds that mystique to to Gavin yeah I do a lot of system you know like um
01:22:59
Speaker
Like when I'm doing trivia or when I'm hosting karaoke, oftentimes i have I have a DJ voice. So I'll get on the microphone and I'll talk to this to everybody. be Like, all right, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to karaoke night. And then I'll go over and I'll talk to people in the bar and they look at me like, whoa. I'm all like...
01:23:16
Speaker
oh yeah, you don't know what I sound like. And they're all like, yeah, they're like, whoa, that's crazy. I'm like, did you think I walk around talking like a total asshole all the time? like like Or when i'm when I'm on stage, um you know there's there's a very specific way that I talk.
01:23:34
Speaker
I'm not going to it now because it's getting late and whatnot. I don't want to be rude to the wife. But there's a very specific voice inflection that I use to pump the crowd up and to get them where really going and and resonate with me. So they're all genuine voices of mine.
01:23:48
Speaker
This is just my default and the most comfortable to me.
Humorous Impersonation of Gavin
01:23:54
Speaker
There you go, Jerz.
01:24:00
Speaker
I was, was, feel like last time you were here, we talked a little bit about it, but I've always been curious about it. I'm like, yeah, I don't want to be that dick that asked that question because I'm sure you get asked a million times, but I will say I seen the, I seen the, the little video you guys did a while back where, where Cody did his impersonation of you.
01:24:19
Speaker
It was dead. That was spot on. Cody and I cody and i both do very good impersonations of each other. I got to hang out with Zach little bit more. We do a lot of texting. and I got to hear his voice a little bit more so I can nail my Zach impersonation.
01:24:31
Speaker
Yeah, i had I had to watch it. I'm not gonna lie. I had to watch the video two times because I thought, wait a minute, is he? Is Gavin actually talking and he's lip-syncing? Because he was spot on, man. He nailed it. i was like, holy shit. That's all it's going to take.
01:24:52
Speaker
Zach's on the struggle bus down there. One of his own dogs. Nope,
01:25:04
Speaker
he's still on. If anyone asks you about it, just say whatever Johnny Depp has. Whatever, yeah, whatever, whatever. don't know, Gavin's just pretentious.
01:25:16
Speaker
yeah he's yeah just saying yeah i don't know i don't know it guys weird moneyless yeah yeah yeah that's what i always thought i was like yeah you got like a little i see that now johnny deb little pirates of the character jack sparrow to you to your personality yeah that's you guys if if If you guys missed the the the first time I had them on, go back.
01:25:43
Speaker
listen to the Listen to the replay the first time they were on. Go back and watch some of their stuff because Gavin told a story about doing a promo in downtown Cleveland and jumping on a bus and just being a true freaking rock star. Yeah, we yeah we yeah a hijacked at the funny bus in Cleveland, and that was pretty amazing.
01:26:03
Speaker
Yeah, so mean yeah if you want to get a better, you know, get to know them a little better, like said, go back and listen to Check out there the cool thing about what you you guys what you what you guys do with your social media, you guys do so much.
From Lip-Sync to Vlogs
01:26:17
Speaker
I don't know how you have the time for it. And there's so many videos and there's so many behind the scenes things and there's so much information that goes out there. Yeah. It's not hard to know what they're doing. Yeah, no, it isn't. I mean lately I've been doing sort of vlog style where Beforehand I was doing a lot lip-sync videos. I think his phone did die. I think that's what happened But like beforehand I was doing a lot of like lip-sync videos and things like that um Doing a lot of like making things that do a lot of crafts I still do a lot crafts for our our work and then um I was doing
01:26:49
Speaker
just like kind like random things to figure out what would stick and what wouldn't. Now I'm doing more of like blog kind of things because i was telling people, you know, especially when I message news followers, just thank you for joining our journey.
01:27:01
Speaker
And it really is a journey. And so I feel like doing sort of a blog style really captures that. You know, i so of course I still do like the like the photo, um the carousel, and like the live video shoots stuff like that, and promoting the songs, you know, just in different ways. i've also i've learned how to use hooks a little bit better, where instead of just me with a microphone in my bedroom with a sheet behind me singing to the camera, it's... um It's it's you know me saying like, hey, you know for the longest time, I've always felt like my world is going to collapse because it's going well.
01:27:34
Speaker
And this is the song that I wrote about. This is Kiss Me Kill Me. So I've done a lot of studying to how to do hooks better and how to edit videos and how to really stretch content to like that one video of me singing Kiss Me Kill Me. That's me in front of my TV. That's all that is.
01:27:49
Speaker
and i just I just turned down the contrast so that way it would um it would just like make me a shadow, like a silhouette, and that's all that I did. And being able to just take that one video and put it at the end of all the other videos has made editing and making videos significantly easier.
01:28:05
Speaker
And then it's a lot of in the moment stuff, you know? It's a lot of getting excited about something. It's a lot of just filming the process of things, and it's a lot of deleting videos. i have so much shit on my phone that I constantly have to delete.
01:28:17
Speaker
Yeah, I know that that is. ah One of the things, and and um and we've played it we played them on here ah quite a bit, and I think it's really cool that you do that. Like you did the Tech Nine.
01:28:30
Speaker
um Corey Taylor. Yeah, the cover. yeah I will be doing more covers um this year now that things are starting to you know smooth out again. It was really hectic there with the wedding and the holidays and the shows and everything, but do plan on doing more covers. But Tech Nod and Corey Taylor, that was an awesome cover, dude. That was so much fun to learn.
01:28:48
Speaker
That was awesome and and completely... if I didn't know you like I know you, I would say unexpected, but definitely like holy shit. we actually We've actually played it quite a few times on different shows here on the network and it's gotten the same response every time.
01:29:05
Speaker
But it was so cool to see you do two totally different styles. Yeah. And then you do the, then you did the gorillas song and I was showing Kayla and she was like, is there anything he can't do? And I said, apparently. I got the best compliment ever on the Gorillaz video.
01:29:26
Speaker
Someone was mad about it and commented, okay, stop lip syncing and actually sing the song. oh Yeah, ah you nailed it.
01:29:36
Speaker
I mean, you were so glad. I saw that comment and I was just blown away. And i was just like, that is me doing the song. I don't know what to tell you. Like, I do it at karaoke three times a week.
01:29:49
Speaker
You know, it's my job. Yeah. Do a cover of Custard. ah Yeah, I definitely will be doing more Slipknot songs um and Corey Taylor material. I want to continue. I want to do things that are different so that I don't want to just be a bunch of Corey Taylor covers. Yeah. Something like that. Yeah. um But I definitely will be revisiting Corey's vocals in his work. So the band name has influence.

on Eve's first... Oh, oh, you mean
The Story Behind Kissing Lilith
01:30:23
Speaker
on the... Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Yeah, i Kissing Love. That is the whole... That's the biggest reason behind the name and the meaning of the band. ah So for those who don't know, um the story of Lilith in the biblical sense is she was Adam's first wife i when they were to lay together with each other in the Garden of Eden.
01:30:46
Speaker
Adam wanted her below him because he saw her as below him and she wanted to lay either side by side or I believe actually she wanted lay on top as equals is what she meant to them. She was being penetrated, she wanted to be on top and they lie as man and wife as equals and that caused a huge fight between them. She refused to have sex and to be with him and then she left the garden of Eden Angels went after her.
01:31:12
Speaker
She refused to return with the angels. And then because of that, they cursed her and all of her children to either die again and again or be demons. the meaning behind kissing Lilith is we all have trauma.
01:31:30
Speaker
We all have scars. We all have things that happened to us or even with some things that we might have done that were not necessarily our fault, that we were still damned for anyway.
01:31:42
Speaker
And we want anyone listening to know that you are seen, you are heard, you are not alone. There are things that I will continue to explore throughout the music, um physical, emotional, sexual trauma that I've gone through.
Music as Solace and Empowerment
01:31:59
Speaker
And these are real life scenarios. And I plan on telling other people's stories. So I had a fan actually send in some lyrics talking about um her eating disorder. And I have some people who are very close to me that have eating disorders. And I want to talk to them about it. I want to tell their story as well.
01:32:15
Speaker
I don't want this project to just be about me me me me me which is really unfortunate that Zach's phone died right now um right die yes yeah i want people to know that's
01:32:33
Speaker
despite anything that has happened to you despite the things that you have gone through you deserve to be loved. You deserve to be happy. You deserve to be respected. you deserve to You deserve to have progress with struggle.
01:32:51
Speaker
And what I mean by that is you deserve to have the full satisfaction of truly accomplishing things. don't want people to be misconstrued and think that i I am saying, oh yeah, everybody should just be given everything for free. No, you have to earn things, absolutely.
01:33:06
Speaker
But you do deserve to to be given that peace and that happiness and and that love. It might not always come easy, but you do deserve it.
01:33:20
Speaker
that was That was one of the things that that kind of turned me on to you guys as a fan. and and and your music was, obviously, the first song I heard was more than worth it. And then to get the little, you know, get the backstory from social media and then get to talk to you about it was it's it's it's real, man.
01:33:38
Speaker
we've We've all been there. You know, we've all gone through. and And that's one of the things that a lot of artists today, their songs have no meaning. They're just,
01:33:51
Speaker
beats and a catchy hook or whatever yeah so and and I grew up in a different era I'm i'm old you know i grew up with so songwriters storytellers and stuff like that so you you kind of have that and and very relatable to a lot of people who's been through shit in their lives yeah I mean on one hand I really hate that it's relatable um to so many people it's it's very unfortunate but i'm I'm very very grateful that I have I do have this platform and I do have a a way to give other people a voice. like That's what I hope that I'm doing. you know I've said this before in this interview and I'll always say at the end of the day, we want to entertain, we want to inspire people. We are not trying to be the greatest anything, but if we can inspire somebody to be the greatest something, that would be that. I mean, that's you can't ask for more. You really can't.
01:34:47
Speaker
No, that's that's a win. that's that's That's a win right there. um And that's the other thing, man. You never know. people People live in silent, and they fight their battles in silence every day.
01:35:02
Speaker
have music that you can relate to or or even to give you that that feeling of, eh, maybe I'm not alone. there's obviously you know There's other people that are going through something similar. you know It'll kind of give you that courage and that strength to keep going forward.
01:35:16
Speaker
Yeah. And a lot of people just need that that little extra that little extra push you know in the in the right direction so that they don't keep falling off of that cliff and and going down that hill.
01:35:30
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, people just want to be heard. Oh, yeah. I mean, that's thing yeah that's that's a big thing. i mean, why do people become musicians or you know podcasters or writers or whatever? they They just want to get out there. yeah Some people do it for for nefarious reasons. you know Some people just want to be Christian famous, but there's people out there that actually give a rat's ass and you know maybe through your stories or you know other people's stories, then that'll save the next person.
01:36:03
Speaker
Yeah. Money's never the goal. its notmi I mean, my money money is not the goal, no. It would be great to be able to put roofles roofs over our heads and food on the tables for us and our families. um I mean, that that's the most that we could really ask for. Anything after that is cherries on top.
01:36:20
Speaker
Yeah. It was a bonus. Yeah. No, man. I love talking to you, dude. I love talking to you, too. I do have a... I do got a wife in the middle. I got a brand new wife in the middle. A brand new wife, yeah. Brand new wife. All shiny and...
01:36:41
Speaker
basically trying to be trying to be respectful but at the same time i would like to go a ravisher um i know i don't want to i don't want to keep talking to you so much and we will have to do and i would like to go do things to her that would make reddit blush Nice.
01:37:01
Speaker
The door's always open, for men You know, you're a part of the nonsensical family. We we fucking love you here. You're always welcome. you You guys are always welcomed up on the show. um And as as you guys progress, and i'm going to I'm going to want you to come back on the show because I want to i want to talk to you guys about what's going on and where things are going. 01:37:21
Speaker

I'm like, really? i would have never i would have never thought you would listen to that kind of music, but okay, cool. I love that. Yeah, we we've somehow found the tightrope of... um of just reaching the widest audience possible.
01:37:45
Speaker
I've had kids reach out to me. When say kids, I mean like, you know, like 17 to 20 years old. I've had them reach out to me saying, um' like, oh, my God, I showed you to my parents and they love you.
01:37:57
Speaker
And then i've I've had folks, you know, reach out to me, people and in their forty s and 50s, like, hey, I showed you to my kids and they love you. And I'm like, What did we do?
01:38:08
Speaker
you know? Yeah. but its Just something out there that that people can enjoy and listen to. um Looking forward to the new video.
01:38:20
Speaker
We'll wrap it up on that. I can't wait to play it on here. Of course, I'm a little i'm a little nervous, not only for the video shoot, for you and your safety, but I'm also nervous that YouTube's going to give us a strike. You know what? YouTube posted. Marilyn Manson has videos of him jacking off and cutting himself on YouTube. YouTube can fuck itself, okay? i was I was scrolling on Facebook the other day and literal porn porn ads for like AI porn sites were being recommended to me through my reels. I was scrolling on reels and and I was seeing that i was all like, it's there's no censorship on the internet other than who has the money.
01:39:01
Speaker
Yeah. Well, if we get a strike, it'll be well-earned and worth it, in my opinion. so We're going to our best to make sure that nobody gets any strikes. but At the end of the day, we've got to figure it out. That'll be an next hurdle.
01:39:12
Speaker
