Avatar
59 Plays2 years ago

Meet Ömer Faruk Şahin (@Baristanomi), a man who fell in love with coffee after his first sip of Turkish coffee.

At the age of 25, Ömer made the decision to quit his job and pursue his dream of becoming a barista.

Currently, he is hoping to go abroad in the near future in order to educate himself about the coffee industry on a global scale.

Although Ömer has big dreams, he is very content with simply making bonds with people around a cup of coffee.

Before that first sip, Omar said, I was working in a private company as a mechanical technician, but I knew that this profession was not going to be permanent. I was always looking for a job where I could do my job with passion.

Omer decided that he had found his true calling, quit his job, and dove head first into the coffee industry. There were many highs and lows along the way. First and foremost, Omer found it very difficult to break into the coffee industry, since he didn't have any prior experience in coffee, except with his own research.

Secondly, although it took Omar time, effort, and talent to become a barista, some countries and people do not seem to understand the complexity and importance of coffee and the industry. This can make Omar's job rather difficult when his work is not respected nor understood.

Achievements and Competitions

Despite these lows, Omar also had some incredible highs. He finally got SCA certified, placed 50 out of 80 at a barista competition, and is currently hoping to go abroad in the near future in order to educate himself about the coffee industry on a global scale.

Rethinking Coffee as Culture

But why does Omar's voice need to be heard? What does he have to say that will change people's views on the coffee industry? When Omar was asked what tidbit of advice he would give to people who are just beginning to understand the coffee industry, he said, I suggest viewing coffee as a culture. It is so much more than a drink. It is a lifestyle with no end to it. The power of a single cup of coffee can bring people together and you can be the person to make that cup.
