Have a kind eye for the situations behind people’s unhealthy, irrational, or erratic behaviors? On this episode of the Teacher Turned Entrepreneur Podcast, meet Heather Kent, a fellow teacher who turned her ability to see through the traumatic experiences and complex stories behind her students’ behavior into actual psychological help for youth and adults navigating trauma. It all began after she got a sense of the dramatic number of student funerals she had to attend over her years as a teacher. Trauma breeds awfulness. She saw children from socioeconomically challenged communities come to schools with ongoing personal struggles all over their heads – “come to school, check all that at the door, sit down and be ready to learn” – and be judged for their abnormal behaviors! Would you call that remotely rational?

In her experience working with human rights clubs and going on international humanitarian trips with her students, Heather witnessed the transformative power of hope. The experiences helped them discover what they wanted to do in their lives and walk in hope. Over time, the desire to reinvent young adult minds lost in lamenting loops made her dedicate herself to trauma-based work. It’s been a long journey – from pursuing a Master’s in Psychology to working with youth mental agencies to starting a private practice, but in the end, she’s living her purpose!

You’ll learn about Heather’s work with individuals, groups, and organizations to create safe spaces for people to become aware of their blind spots, be trauma-informed, and get the help of therapy to thrive. She shares the lessons from her teaching journey that have helped her become a good therapist and advises fellow teachers to choose a professional journey of their interest. Remember, Heather’s journey had nothing to do with entrepreneurship when it began. She gradually unearthed it. So, fret not if you’re not there yet; just make sure to connect with your purpose!
