Right, I'm bored. What plaything can you offer me today? He's
00:00:39
Speaker
got war rocket Ajax to bring back his body. Germany, exit! Yes!
00:00:53
Speaker
Hello everybody and welcome to War Rocket Ajax.

What changes would Chris and Matt make in history?

00:00:56
Speaker
This is the internet's most explosive comic book and pop culture podcast and we are your hosts. My name is Chris Sims.
00:01:05
Speaker
With me as always is Matt Wilson. And Matt, if I had a time machine, but I couldn't use it for anything important. Anything that was that actually mattered.
00:01:17
Speaker
But I could venture back into history and change something.
00:01:23
Speaker
I think I would probably attempt to convince Bill Finger that Robin should have a different name.
00:01:35
Speaker
Instead of Dick Grayson. Instead of Dick, yeah. Grayson, I think, can stay.
00:01:42
Speaker
Penis Grayson. Like, it... 1940 wasn't that long ago. i feel like... i feel like He had to have known. like Did he think, this is just current slang.
00:01:59
Speaker
i don't It'll change by 1942.
00:02:03
Speaker
Was that use of the word dick in the lexicon in 1940? I honestly don't know. sure It had to be. It had to be.
00:02:14
Speaker
Let me see. if i if i go If I search for dick slang... on If you're slanging dick. The internet, that'll that'll let me know when the slang use of the word dick started, right? um i Honestly, i have no idea. i But so interesting use of of of the time machine.
00:02:33
Speaker
Interesting use of the time machine, for would you use it for? Now, again, you cannot use it for anything important. Yeah. Hmm.
00:02:44
Speaker
I would...
00:02:48
Speaker
Man, i this is an edit-free episode because I'm going to be at Heroes Con, so everybody's going to hear my long pause while I'm trying to figure out... you need a vamp, Matt? Yeah, vamp for a second. pam I would say... ah ah Johnny?
00:03:05
Speaker
Grayson? That could work. i would think Steve? I'm literally just looking at my shelf of action figures. Goku? Grayson? If I could get him to name Robin Goku...
00:03:18
Speaker
That would be wild.
00:03:22
Speaker
I think that would be bananas. That might actually change much more history than I would intend. Oh, it was, it was, okay. The term dick came to be associated with the penis through usage by men in the military around the 1880s. Yeah, man.
00:03:40
Speaker
So it was around. They knew. around They knew. Wow. ah Fascinating. That's fucking probably Bob Kane's idea. That sounds like him, right? Like, call him Dick.
00:03:55
Speaker
I mean, his name could still be Richard, but he could be Richie. Richie. Richie Grayson. Rick. Ricky. Ricky Grayson. Because here's the problem, is they tried to like they tried to change his name to Rick.
00:04:10
Speaker
With just RIC couple years ago? And it's like, no, that's not going to stick. He's been Dick Grayson for 85 years. Like, I hate to be the one to break this to you. You've got to go back in time.
00:04:26
Speaker
Alright, my time machine use, if I can't do it use it for anything important, wouldn't be to go that far back, honestly. I would go back and tell them and insist...
00:04:38
Speaker
That they don't remove the headphone jack from iPhones. Mm. Mm. Bold choice. Because I know that, like, people they they're like, oh, everybody's always going to use Bluetooth headphones all the time.
00:04:52
Speaker
But, like, sometimes sometimes you want to plug in some headphones. Here's the thing, man. If lose AirPods, ass...
00:05:04
Speaker
my ad h ds forgets to take them out of my pocket and those things go in the wash, I'm out like like a hundred bucks.
00:05:16
Speaker
yeah but even Even like ear pods with the wire are like 20.
00:05:24
Speaker
Like I can afford to have spares. You can't... ah you can't ever buy the official apple thing like you gotta buy some like second secondary well unfortunately airpods work really well yeah and they they enter like if you've got if you've got a macbook and an iphone and an ipad at all it's it's a lot more seamless than other things look i i know i know matt what are we doing today we are our show You're not editing, so what are we doing today?
00:05:58
Speaker
We're going to rate some swords a little bit later in the show. But Chris, before we do that, we do have some business to take care of here at the top of the show.

Supporting the Show via Patreon

00:06:08
Speaker
The first piece of that business is to thank our newest supporters over on Patreon.
00:06:16
Speaker
That's right, Matt. Now, these are the people who, if they want to support the show... they can go to patreon.com slash warrocketajax, kick in as little as a dollar a month, help us keep doing the show, most importantly, help us pay those gimmicks they keep sitting in the mail called bills.
00:06:32
Speaker
And, as an added benefit, some of them can even... Matt, I know you've heard, because you keep track of the news. you You, unfortunately, watch the news.
00:06:47
Speaker
Unfortunately, yeah. So you know that It's finally happened. The internet cafe bubble has burst. Some would say that happened a long time ago.
00:06:58
Speaker
It hadn't yet affected Gimmick Street. But, buddy, it has now. The once thriving internet cafe district, we're seeing a lot of empty storefronts. And that's why the Gimmick Street Preservation Society exists.
00:07:14
Speaker
That's right. At the $15 level of our Patreon, and higher, you can have the privilege of naming an address on Gimmick Street, just like Andrew Heisel did.
00:07:30
Speaker
And what stands at 728 Gimmick Street? It's the James Buchanan Barnes Memorial Funeral parlar Parlor and Revolving Door Factory.
00:07:46
Speaker
Ha ha ha ha ha! That's funny. Yeah, that's funny. It's interesting that that would be named for James Buchanan Barnes. um I guess because for a long time, he was like the only one who hadn't combined those two things.
00:08:05
Speaker
oh Like, you would think it would be named after like, like Jeaneth and Gray. Yeah. Yeah, you'd think it'd be named after somebody who's died and come back many, many times. Yeah, but I mean, I guess i guess if they they really wanted it to be a memorial, they thought that was a safe bet.
00:08:26
Speaker
oh It used to be Bucky and Uncle Ben. They were the ones. I guess Gwen, Gwen Stacy, but... Uncle Ben and Gwen Stacy are still technically dead, even though they They figure out ways to bring him back every once in a while, sneakily.
00:08:42
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. Sometimes sometimes a little too sneakily, in Gwen's case. Yeah. Yeah, i don't I don't love that. I don't love the many of those Gwen Stacy returns.
00:08:55
Speaker
yeah Gwenny happy returns. Not for Matt Wilson. Chris, would you like to hear who our newest Patreon backers are? Yes, thank you for ah for sponsoring Gimmick Street. Giving that seed money, that angel investment to the James Buchanan Barnes Memorial Funeral Home and Revolving Door Factory. That did get me.
00:09:15
Speaker
It's a good job all that one But yes, who else do we have, Matt? I think there's just one new name to read, because I believe I've read... These other names.
00:09:26
Speaker
ah But our newest Patreon supporter is Ryan Bielek. Oh, thank you, Ryan. If you'd like to be like Ryan and help us out here on the show, help us keep paying those gimmicks they keep sending in the mail call bills, you can go to patreon.com slash warrocketajax and kick in as little as $1 per month to make sure that we do this show every single week.
00:09:47
Speaker
To make sure that we do Comics Catch-Up, which we will do soon. ah Every Story Ever specials monthly. Movie Fighters and Snack Situation. All of those shows are made possible by your support on Patreon. And as a patron, you get every single one of those shows completely ad-free on your special Patreon feed.
00:10:05
Speaker
I did get a message from someone whose Patreon feed was malfunctioning earlier this week. Unfortunately, Patreon has to fix that. But as as far as I know... They're pretty responsive, so if you have a problem, ah please contact them. I cannot help you with that, but but Patreon will.
00:10:27
Speaker
What do you get as a patron and besides ad-free episodes? You can get bonus content. That is stuff we record especially for Patreon, and outtakes that I cut out of the show and put on Patreon, and stuff that we have written.
00:10:43
Speaker
specifically for the Patreon. That is all over there, and if you join at the Patreon level of $5, you can get all of that stuff immediately. A huge backlog of stuff you may have never encountered by us before, if you've never been bid a patron at that level.
00:11:02
Speaker
The $10 level, you get line-stepping privileges for our segments, which are currently 1 to 10 of Swords and every story ever. At the $15 level, you get to name a spot on Gimmick Street, and at the $20 level, you get a t-shirt.
00:11:14
Speaker
I am very close to making the t-shirt order for this year's t-shirts. I just need a few more sizes from listeners. And then i will order the t-shirts, and they will be on the way to the good folks who are at the $20 level on Patreon.
00:11:34
Speaker
If you are unable to help us monetarily, which we understand that There are various reasons why that may be the case. You can help us out in other ways. You can leave us a five-star review on the podcasting app that you use, whatever that may be.
00:11:46
Speaker
Or you can just spread the word about the show, tell your friends and family, and let them know about a podcast you like, War Rocket Ajax, and how maybe they could back our Patreon.
00:11:57
Speaker
That would also be ah wonderful thing to do. Chris, with that, it's time for some Checks and Recs. What do you say? Let's do it, Matt. I will say, i i really want someone to explain the concept of buying an address on Gimmick Street to a relative who has not heard the show.
00:12:23
Speaker
If you do that, please let us know.
00:12:28
Speaker
Chris, what do you have to check in with this week?

Convention Talk and Future Involvement

00:12:30
Speaker
Matt! As you know, i have been i have been on something of an odyssey. Or as I would say, something of a Magic Mike XXL.
00:12:42
Speaker
Okay. A journey, if you will, through the streets of Kemurocho, the the slightly copyright numbers filed off streets of Japan via the Like a Dragon slash Yakuza series.
00:13:07
Speaker
Right. yeah I don't guess you've been to Yokohama yet, because I think that might be in the Ichiban Kasuga games. Yeah, i well, I have played the first. well I have played Yakuza colon Like a Dragon. I have not played it yet Like a Dragon colon Infinite Wealth.
00:13:25
Speaker
Right, yeah. which that That one's mostly in Hawaii. Yeah. ah But here's what I'll say.
00:13:33
Speaker
Weirdly enough, I was not expecting this, and I know I talked a little bit about it last week. Like a Dragon Isshin is my favorite of the Yakuza games. Yeah, I mean, I could tell when you talked about it last week that you you were really enjoying it. Yeah, it has really it has really set in Like, I don't know what they did, because it's, I mean, look, they're all the same game.
00:13:59
Speaker
Fortunately, they're all a pretty good game, but they are generally... the same thing. oh It has to just be that this is the one with the most swords?
00:14:13
Speaker
like That's gotta to be it. mean, that is playing to your interests. Yeah, it is kind of far and away my favorite. And for it to be my favorite version of this game that is the same game every time, that's the only thing that's really different about it.
00:14:33
Speaker
lot more swords. And guns, honestly. you like swords and guns, this is the game for you. ah but yeah, I think i am I am ready to declare it the the best one.
00:14:50
Speaker
And I'm as surprised as anyone.
00:14:54
Speaker
um don' know maybe is is that I don't I'm not in like the Yakuza fan community. Perhaps I should be. But I don't know if that's a hot take or if that's generally acknowledged. But, I mean, it's got a lot of swords and also Kenny Omega.
00:15:09
Speaker
Well, it's certainly been stated for this show. I mean, i my preference is the Ichiban Kasuga games because I like the turn-based combat. But Isheen sounds pretty good.
00:15:24
Speaker
But Matt, this one's got like dodge rolling and and counters, and I know you love that stuff.
00:15:31
Speaker
Yeah, I would give that a try. ah i'll i'll I'll give that game a try, try sure. You should, you should get it, that's good. I will say, I was going to send this message to our group chat that we have with Benito um before I realized that 50% of the people who would read it would not get it or care.
00:15:50
Speaker
ah But I do have a complaint to the developers of Like a Dragon Isshin, which is that if you're going to have Kenneth Omega in the game...
00:16:06
Speaker
and he's going to give you a move called Essence of One-Winged Angel, then enemies should not be able to get up after that.
00:16:19
Speaker
That's true. Nobody kicks out of the One-Winged Angel. Nobody's ever kicked out of it, Matt. Except for Hangman Page. I think Hangman Page did. ah No, Hangman Page didn't. He did the One-Winged Angel on Kenny Omega, and Kenny Omega kicked out.
00:16:35
Speaker
that's ah So Kenny Omega has kicked out of the One-Winged Angel. Yeah, no one has kicked out of it when Kenny Omega... Maybe that's the problem, is that it's Ryo Masakamoto doing it, and not... so Slash Kazuma Kiryu doing it, and not ah Kenny Omega.
00:16:51
Speaker
i yeah Okay, I guess maybe there is canonical, evidential support for the idea that someone could kick out of the One-Winged Angel if it was not performed by Kenny Omega.
00:17:03
Speaker
Yeah. ah that's That's your out. we were in that We were in the building when Hangman Page did it. That's right. ah that We sure were, and it was incredible. That that accomplished, dangerous shoot fighter, Hangman Adam Page.
00:17:17
Speaker
Matt, what have you been up to this past week? Well, Chris, by the time this episode goes up, I will have... done my duties at Heroes Convention 2025 at table AA680.
00:17:32
Speaker
So if you're hearing this, none of that will mean anything to you if you didn't go. But I'm saying ah that because it is what is going on with me this week. And it is the reason that there are no edits on this episode. Because the laptop that I can edit podcasts on, I cannot take with me.
00:17:53
Speaker
Because ah my wonderful and accomplished and funny wife, Marlene, ah may have to do improv-related work on it ah for the improv school that she works for.
00:18:07
Speaker
So i can't take it with me. And my other laptop doesn't have GarageBand on it. So um I'm literally, as soon as we finish recording this, going to slap this episode together and schedule it.
00:18:22
Speaker
And because I'm going to be gone all weekend at Heroes Con, which I'm very excited about ah because lots of our friends are going to be there. Jay Gonzo is going to be there.
00:18:34
Speaker
love Love that guy. you should get You should get the tattoo that he was supposed to give me in 2020.
00:18:40
Speaker
What was it? It's the it's the the matching one. don't want to say it because don't want anybody else to get it. Not that anyone else would get a Dusty Rhodes slash South Carolina State motto tattoo. But it's the matching one to the chair leg that I have.
00:18:54
Speaker
Right. i I don't think I would get that tattoo. I would probably get the tattoo that I want, ah which is the eclipse cracking. Yeah, but he's not he's not prepared for that one.
00:19:07
Speaker
Well, I don't think he's prepared for the one that he was going to do in 2020 either. Probably not, but don't know, man. I have a lot of faith in Gonzo. ah Carla Pacheco's going to be there.
00:19:19
Speaker
Can't wait to see Carla. Carla's in Charlotte. I saw the post. ah Tabling with Cheryl Lynn Eaton, who I'm excited to meet. ah Big fan of Cheryl's Blue Sky account.
00:19:34
Speaker
And lots of other friends are going to be at Heroes Con. Kyle is going to be there. ah I'm excited to see Kyle. ah and but And plenty more people. I actually haven't looked at the full ah guest list, so there are probably going to be lots of people there that I don't even know are going to be there.
00:19:52
Speaker
So it should be a fun weekend. And if you were there, I hope you came by and said hi. It's weird that by the time people hear this, you're going to be best friends with the one true voice of Spider-Man, Howard Mackey.
00:20:08
Speaker
yeah And I don't, like, maybe that's what War Rocket Ajax is now. Maybe I get fired from Klytus Media. it In favor of Howard Mackey? In favor of the one true voice of Spider-Man, Howard Mackey.
00:20:21
Speaker
Time will tell. Time will tell. Time to make some recommendations, Chris. what do you have to recommend? Matt, I watched a film. A movie film.

Movie and Comic Discussions

00:20:32
Speaker
Not a new one, because I don't do that.
00:20:35
Speaker
yeah I don't go to a theater to see new movies. I go to a theater to see Demolition Man with Kyle Starks. That was a great time. Highly recommend that activity.
00:20:48
Speaker
But ah I watched a movie on television the other day. I believe it was on ah the the Large Bad Bookstore website. oh Primary. ah Large Bad Bookstore website Optimus Prime.
00:21:03
Speaker
Orion Pax.
00:21:06
Speaker
ah Isn't it fun when there's no edits and people can hear the jokes getting workshopped as we go? i mean, that's not the stuff that gets edited out. It's true.
00:21:17
Speaker
That's true. This is pretty much how it is every week. oh But I watched The Accountant. Matt, have you seen The Accountant? Starring Ben Affleck? Starring Batman himself, Ben Affleck.
00:21:32
Speaker
I don't think I've ever seen The Accountant ah in full. I've seen the last few minutes of The Accountant many times.
00:21:45
Speaker
You watched that you watch that ah big fight between Jon Bernthal and Ben Affleck? Yeah, and then there's something near the end where ah like there's something hidden in a painting.
00:22:01
Speaker
yeah Yeah, I've seen that. i've seen Because they used to air it all the time before Dynamite. And so I watched the last few minutes of it many times in the lead up to watching Dynamite.
00:22:14
Speaker
It's going to be weird if you watch it and it doesn't like like the the credits start to roll and it doesn't go, let's go Wignite! Yeah, it it will be weird. ah But yes, I watched it. AC really watched it a couple weeks ago and really enjoyed it.
00:22:30
Speaker
And ah was like, oh, you should watch this. It's fun. The premise of the film is that Ben Affleck is oh on the spectrum. And like many people on the spectrum, many neurodivergent people,
00:22:45
Speaker
like the ones we know, he has special interests. And his special interests are mathematics and killing people. ah who Who like bad guys?
00:22:57
Speaker
he thought like He's not like a serial killer. But he is killing bad guys. And that's fun. as as people As people know, I love a hero on the spectrum.
00:23:10
Speaker
love Love somebody who really hyper-focuses on the problems. And and gets gets the stuff done. a couple things that I really liked about this movie. One, um Anna Kendrick is in it.
00:23:22
Speaker
And Anna Kendrick also plays an accountant. She is not the accountant. She is an accountant. um And i like i I really like the idea of Anna Kendrick having a job.
00:23:40
Speaker
Like a regular job. Like a regular job. Because, like, imagine going to work and Anna Kendrick's there. like Like, whatever your interests or preferences are, you would come home and be like, hey, have you met Dana in accounting?
00:24:02
Speaker
She's the most beautiful woman I've ever seen in my life. Like, it's weird that she works here. and And also, she's like four foot nine, or however yeah tiny Anna Kendrick is.
00:24:17
Speaker
Yeah. Like, it's... Like, that is... Like, you and I have been in a room with Rosario Dawson. Yeah. And I cannot imagine Rosario Dawson having any job other than having cameras pointed at her for money.
00:24:34
Speaker
because She is... Like, it's... Like, you can't think... around her, you know? And I feel like that's, like, I i really love the idea of Anna Kendrick's got a job in accounts receivable.
00:24:49
Speaker
Or accounts payable. Well, ah Anna Kendrick, she was probably in other movies before that, but ah the movie that I remember, like, seeing her in for the first time was all about her having a job, which was which was strange.
00:25:05
Speaker
Which was Twilight. No, it was not Twilight. it was i I think it was called Up in the Air with George Clooney. And like they both had a job where they fired people.
00:25:19
Speaker
I mean, it would kind of soften the blow to get fired if it was Anna Kendrick. probably wouldn't be mad at it. I'd be like yeah like if like, yeah, I probably shouldn't work here. Anyway, I just thought that was that was very funny.
00:25:33
Speaker
ah The other thing is, I do regret to inform you that in ah The Accountant 1, which there is a sequel that I have not yet seen, but I am looking forward to watching it at some point, ah John Lithgow is in it, and ah turns out that guy sucks.
00:25:48
Speaker
Yeah. um I was going to tell you there was a sequel to The Accountant that came out this year. Yeah. so And I believe it is ah streaming already. so ah Unfortunately, it has a guy who sucks in it, but...
00:26:02
Speaker
well ah Well, John Lithgow, um I mean, it's an action movie, and he's like a ah corporate piece of shit. So I don't think this is a spoiler. He ain't making it to the sequel.
00:26:17
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. ah But he's in this one, and I booed him every time he was on the screen. But hey, Batman and the Punisher are in it. And Pitch Perfect. And Pitch Perfect.
00:26:29
Speaker
A lot of fun stuff in the account, and I really enjoyed it. I should probably mark it down on Letterboxd. Matt, what would you like to recommend that the people do this week? Well, I have recommended this show before, but I'm recommending the newest series of it.
00:26:48
Speaker
ah And it now has an N for American viewers. So um you should absolutely watch it. It's Taskmaster.
00:27:00
Speaker
ah The 19th series is now... mostly available on YouTube. I think they're up to episode six or seven. and They're usually ten each time.
00:27:13
Speaker
and Jason Manzoukas is on it this season. A ah ah continuing funny gag throughout the series so far is that every time Jason Manzoukas says something and Americanism, he is harshly corrected.
00:27:35
Speaker
So there is one part where he says season instead of series and everybody on the stage says series ah to correct him. um But he's, he's very fun on the show. He is, he is definitely the season, the season series a chaos agent.
00:27:52
Speaker
um And it is, it is very fun to watch. Like there's several times where he's just like tanked things ah for the, for the, the yucks for the goofs. um And it's very good. um And also, he has this thing that he's started doing, and I've started noticing, where if there's a task โ€“ if you don't know what Taskmaster is, which you know you have a lot to watch, and it's all on YouTube, so I'm happy for you.
00:28:22
Speaker
um It's a panel show where they get five comedians, and up until now they've all โ€“ been people who lived in the UK, but Jason Mantzoukas specifically asked to be on the show.
00:28:35
Speaker
um But they get ah five comedians and they just have them do tasks. And... and Usually it's like whoever can accomplish the task the fastest, but sometimes it's like a thing that gets judged, like something artistic or something like that.
00:28:52
Speaker
ah But ah they just, they get points for the tasks and then there's a winner at the end of the show and then there's a winner at the end of the entire series. And ah he's started doing this thing, Manzuka's started doing this thing where if there's like a table set up in front of him or anything standing in front of him by the time the task ends, he flips it over.
00:29:14
Speaker
And it's great. But the other contestants are also very fun and very funny. Stevie Martin is one of the contestants. She's a delight.
00:29:26
Speaker
ah Rosie Ramsey is very funny. ah Matthew Bainton reminds me a lot of my buddy Sean and um is extremely funny as well. um And Fatia El Ghory is like the secret...
00:29:43
Speaker
ace of the see of the series. She is unbelievably funny. So I am recommending Taskmaster. And you can tell that they really want to get want to get the Americans to watch because Jason Mantoukas is in like every thumbnail for every episode.
00:30:02
Speaker
Apparently, i saw an interview with Alex Horn, who is the creator of the show, where they're going to maybe attempt to try to do an American Taskmaster again. that There was one attempt on Comedy Central that failed utterly.
00:30:17
Speaker
ah But it seems like maybe they're going to give it another try. Which I hope they do. Why don't they just go straight to Dropout? Have you seen the latest Game Changer? ah is the What's the the latest one? What's the latest one?
00:30:34
Speaker
The latest one, as of this recording, is the one where... the ah You only have one shot? You only have one shot, yeah. Yes. Have you seen that one? Yes. Well, they got Alex Horne to do a little bit.
00:30:46
Speaker
Yes, they did. And I was like, this is like worlds colliding, dude. This is like... They know what they're doing. oh I will say, that episode...
00:31:01
Speaker
is probably my i mean definitely my least favorite of the season so far. But i had to go do ah like I had to go do something, so I didn't finish it.
00:31:12
Speaker
I was like maybe 10 minutes away from the end. So I don't know if there was a twist to it.
00:31:19
Speaker
ah You'll just have to keep watching, I guess. You'll have to just finish it. and so like I kept expecting a twist, and the show kept going. I really enjoyed it, but I just love...
00:31:30
Speaker
the feeling you get when it's like you see someone try to do something and they do it. And like they played the music and they, they had dancers come out and dance if they did it.
00:31:44
Speaker
And like every single time, cause I was just at home watching it by myself every single time somebody attempted a task and did it. I said, they did it.
00:31:56
Speaker
Yeah. Wow. I think what we're finding out here is that despite appearances, Matt's the more kind-hearted one. you You like to see people succeed and do things, and I'm over here like, where's the twist? When are you going to make them suffer?
00:32:14
Speaker
I love to see people succeed and do things, yes. yeah I get joy from that. Not me. um All right, Chris, those are our checks and recs, which means it's time to talk about some comics.
00:32:27
Speaker
Let's do it.
00:32:30
Speaker
The obvious Texter's Choice winner from this week is Crypto, The Last Dog of Krypton, number one, by Ryan North and Mike Norton.
00:32:45
Speaker
A comic that is absolutely wonderful, but also i feel like there was something on almost every page that made me go,
00:32:59
Speaker
I bet this is going to make Chris cry. Oh, yeah. no like It hasn't yet, but boy i'm like I think I just texted you, this comic's going to make me cry. i could i would have bet money that the first issue would happen. Buddy, it came close. ah but here This is such a narrow cast book.
00:33:21
Speaker
i Not even for us, but for me. Like, definitely for us, but like so specifically to me in that it is Ryan North and Mike Norton doing a comic about Crypto the Superblog.
00:33:35
Speaker
Crypto the Superdog. I'm the Superblog. Yeah, but it's it's ah that's that was a Force of Habit. ah Crypto the Superdog, in which there's a lettering trick.
00:33:48
Speaker
Like, there's a specific lettering trick. Which is that ah when the non-dogs are talking to each other, like Jor-El and Lara, it's in like kind of a grayed-out, mixed-case lettering.
00:34:05
Speaker
But when they're saying something crypto understands, it's in normal, all-caps, black oh lettering. So they'll just be talking about science or whatever, and then ah someone will say the word crypto.
00:34:21
Speaker
And the word crypto is it like in normal text. right and then good Or good boy. good boy yeah yeah Or breakfast. Or leave it. um I love that crypto has a little harness that looks like Superman's costume.
00:34:37
Speaker
ah huh ah And there is a there is a splash page of crypto who looks look crypto looks a lot like Biscuit.
00:34:51
Speaker
Crypto's fuzzier than Biscuit. Crypto's little white dog who looks a lot like Biscuit. And there's a page of Crypto like cuddling up to baby Kal-El. And that's it almost it almost got me there.
00:35:06
Speaker
yeah and now I'm looking at it and I'm like, that page is going to make Mike Norton so much money. Oh, dude. Mike Norton is such a champion in this comic.
00:35:21
Speaker
Yeah. The way that he draws Krypto as, like, what a dog looks like.
00:35:31
Speaker
Yeah. but that's what That's what, like, Krypto looks like Biscuit. Krypto's like a dumb little dog. Like, nothing in that head. But he's got such distinct, discernible expressions.
00:35:43
Speaker
He's got that one ear up all the time. Which I love. There's a splash page of โ€“ because, you know, it's the crypto story. the Jor-El and Lara put him in a rocket before they put Cal in a rocket to test it, right?
00:36:00
Speaker
Yeah, they're they're they're testing him like a dog that I can't think about because it will make me cry. Yeah. And, well, I guess it's not a splash page. It's a two-panel page.
00:36:12
Speaker
And there's a shot of just like Crypto blasting off in the rocket, and he's just like crouched down. and And you can see through the glass in the rocket, where he looks kind of like excited and scared at the same time.
00:36:27
Speaker
It's perfect. like He does a big stretch. Like the first thing he does in the comic is he wakes up because Jor-El says breakfast. Yeah. And he does a big stretch, and I did send that picture to... ah sent that panel to AC, and she just texted back, big stretch!
00:36:43
Speaker
Which I am now confusing Biscuit, because she did not big stretch, and I said it. Yeah. And that there's a sound effect, stretch. Yeah. The page where...
00:36:58
Speaker
The page where Crypto gets sucked into a wormhole and Jor-El and Lara realize that they're not going to be able to get him back. This is the part that I thought was going to make you cry. it like It didn't, but ah like I think it's only a tribute to medicine and therapy that it didn't.
00:37:19
Speaker
but But they tell like the last thing they tell Crypto is that he's a good brave boy and a good dog. And the best dog. And they love k Crypto. I might start crying now.
00:37:31
Speaker
yeah And then crypto like Crypto goes to Earth, but Crypto lands at night. So Crypto doesn't have superpowers yet. And people are mean to Crypto.
00:37:44
Speaker
Unbelievable. Yeah, yeah there's ah there's a man that calls him a stupid dog. i want i want that dude I want Lex Luthor murder that motherfucker. the The part that got me was when, after the guy calls him a stupid dog, Crypto has to like go through a hole in a chain link fence. Yeah, and he gets he gets all scratched up.
00:38:02
Speaker
And he gets all scratched up, and you can see like scratches like bloody but bits on him. And I'm like, I hate this. I hate that panel so much. Yeah, it it it makes me mad. um i did ah If you're not on social media, good job.
00:38:19
Speaker
yeah Congratulations. You're doing it right. Congratulations to you. I criticized social media on social media a few days ago, and I should have just said nothing.
00:38:32
Speaker
yeah that's That's the lesson I learned. yeah You should almost always say nothing on social media. But I did โ€“ um After he posted about this comic being released, I did ask Ryan North if it was difficult for him to get into the mindset of a dog that, due to his Kryptonian physiology, could never get stuck in a hole with his owner.
00:38:57
Speaker
And I haven't gotten a satisfactory answer. so But I think maybe that's that's where he got the idea for Krypto to not have superpowers when he first lands on Earth.
00:39:13
Speaker
We're going to keep reading that book. We're going to keep reading that book, obviously.
00:39:18
Speaker
Next up, we're going to talk about Batman and Robin Year One, number eight, which is weirdly a comic we have not talked about very much on the show, despite it being very much a thing for us, because it's a Mark Waid, Chris Somney,
00:39:33
Speaker
Batman and Robin comic that is great. Yeah, Matt. I mean, well, here's the thing. There's a new issue of Usagi Ojimbo out today that we are also not going to talk about. You know why? yeah Because you know it's good.
00:39:48
Speaker
You know it's good. do we need Do you need us to tell you that it's good? Yeah. i got there There was a Humble Bundle with a bunch of Usagi Ojimbo comics, so I've been going back and rereading. reread Seasons.
00:39:59
Speaker
I'm about to reread Grass Cutter. Yeah. Boy! What? Like... Why do I read other comics? you know Sometimes they got good dogs in them, I guess. Sometimes Yusagi Ujimbo's got good dogs in it, though.
00:40:12
Speaker
So, I don't know, man. But yeah. That's why we haven't talking about this one. You know it's good. You can look at it and be like, got it. Good comic. Yeah.
00:40:23
Speaker
There's a pretty fantastic bit in this issue where Batman and Robin fight some dudes some armed dudes on a tennis court. And Robin picks up one of the guns and aims at it at one of the guys.
00:40:39
Speaker
And Batman just slaps it immediately out of his hand, and he's like, we do not use guns. That's unacceptable. And ah Robin's like, okay, sorry, I just wanted to scare him. And Batman's like, we do not ever use guns, period.
00:40:55
Speaker
And Robin's like, well, how am I supposed to scare anybody in this costume? Which is very funny. Yeah, I actually ah wound up, someone on on social media ah asked if ah one time Batmanologist Chris Sims had any thoughts on these. And I was like, one time?
00:41:15
Speaker
I felt like Dr. Dre, Matt. People run around like I ain't got guns. What, you think I sold them all? What, you think we sold them all? Yeah. what you you And I asked, like do you think I stopped reading Batman comics in 2017?
00:41:29
Speaker
When comics like Comics Alliance went under and and I read that issue with that Tom King issue about Bane hanging around with his dick out. and Flashpoint Thomas Wayne showing up. And then as I was typing that, I was like, actually that would have, I probably should have maybe quit reading yeah comics at that point, but no, still love Batman.
00:41:50
Speaker
um Speaking of, speaking of running around with your dick out, the, um, there's some great Robin stuff in this issue because, um, it's all about clay face impersonating Bruce Wayne to try to see if he's Batman and Dick at home.
00:42:09
Speaker
like says everything right to convince him that they're not Batman and Robin. It's great. um I really, really loved the sequence in this comic where Batman meets with Commissioner Gordon and ah he, like, you know Gordon says something and then he like turns around and Batman's still there, kind of just standing there awkwardly.
00:42:36
Speaker
And Gordon's like, okay, that's not how this usually goes. And Batman's like, hey, you've got a daughter, right? Like, she's about Robin's age. is she, like, difficult?
00:42:48
Speaker
Like, Batman awkwardly asking the only other adult he knows for parenting advice is extremely funny to me. yeah And, like, really good.
00:43:01
Speaker
I do have to say that that one scene did kind of break the fiction for me a little bit, because I was like, Commissioner Gordon should absolutely be like, hey, you you should be taking that kid out to fight criminals, by the way.
00:43:17
Speaker
Like, that's a child, Batman. matt Matt, the as as Mark Waid himself once said, I believe, and maybe and maybe he got it from from someone else, but The DC Universe is an inverted pyramid that all rests on the idea that Lois Lane can't tell Clark Kent is Superman because he wears glasses.
00:43:37
Speaker
If you start pulling the bricks out of the bottom, the whole thing falls down. That is true. But I did, like, Batman asking for parenting advice, and then ah Gordon going, oh, is is Robin, like...
00:43:54
Speaker
you know like acting up or something? And Batman going, nah, he's like a really good kid. Nah, he's actually like good. He's good and smart.
00:44:06
Speaker
ah like I thought that was like but was a really good moment. it's i thought yeah One last book we're going to talk about is Superman Unlimited number two, which digs further into this idea of
00:44:23
Speaker
countries being kryptonite rich and like building their entire society ah around having kryptonite uh it's it's certainly interesting and it also explains what the like gold superman is all about which is that he's impervious to kryptonite for a few minutes
00:44:48
Speaker
Which is also another interesting idea. He has 200 seconds. Yeah. ah Before all of his powers are gone. like it's it Which, i bot I both love it and kind of hate it but kind of love it because I kind of hate it.
00:45:08
Speaker
like i like I love the video game-ass idea of Superman having like a limit break for kryptonite damage. When his body like takes too much specifically kryptonite damage, all of his like you know he he gets extra powerful for like ah minute.
00:45:33
Speaker
That's so dumb, and I kind of love it, and I know that if I was eight years old, I'd be like, 200 seconds. Okay, I gotta write that down in my little notebook of facts about superheroes.
00:45:45
Speaker
Like, it's... I kind of love it, and it kind of makes no sense. And it's like so... It's such an obvious, like, storytelling mechanism.
00:46:00
Speaker
For sure. to be like To be like... It's it's fucking the Kaoken attack. You know? it's It's like, I can... If I do this, I have to end the fight, and I can never ever go Kaoken times ten Because then I'll die.
00:46:17
Speaker
like it's such a It's such a plot point as superpower, and I kind of love that about it. Also, it's very obvious to me that um but Big Dan, Big Danny Slott, is ah enjoying himself.
00:46:34
Speaker
Because the the country that got rich off kryptonite is like, no, we actually love Superman. I know we've got a bunch of kryptonite, but you know it's only because Superman saved the Earth and stopped that media from hitting and made it land kind of safely here in our country.
00:46:49
Speaker
like We have Superman on our money, and our coins, ah we put crypto on. And I'm like, Dan, you you didn't... Here's what separates Dan Slott from other writers.
00:47:02
Speaker
He didn't say call it cryptocurrency. Or crypto, or yeah, like, well, he wouldn't call it Bitcoin. He would call it, like, cryptoco but CryptoCoin. CryptoCoin. He didn't call it cryptocurrency. He did have the guy hold one up and say, we call them cryptos.
00:47:17
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, it's funny. It's pretty, like, I like it when people have fun with their comics. Yeah. It's a little on the nose, but also funny. Yeah. And I do, I i will say, that eight-year-old who keeps a notebook of, like, all the stuff that's in Batman's utility belt, and and what everybody's powers and weaknesses and logos are, a thing that that I definitely did, the kind of kid that I was.
00:47:43
Speaker
I do kind of love that Dan Slott's like, yeah, this is, you know Batman shows up and he's like, yeah, this is probably related to that solar flare power that you had. You remember when Jeff Johns was writing Superman and gave you a new power and your new power was that you would like explode, but then you wouldn't have superpowers for a little while.
00:48:02
Speaker
This is like that. It's just a different thing. That's like that. And I'm like, damn, there is, there is precedent.
00:48:11
Speaker
It's true.
00:48:14
Speaker
dumb. I love it.
00:48:17
Speaker
I am appreciating the direction of the Superman comics with the new brain trust so far. So far, pretty fun.
00:48:30
Speaker
All right, Chris. Speaking of fun. Let's rate some swords. Oh, let's do it. but when i swing my swords the ya cho pool Chris, our first sword submission for this one to ten of Swords session is from Neil Hirschberger.
00:48:48
Speaker
It's Squall Leonhart's Gunblade from Final Fantasy VIII.
00:48:55
Speaker
Now, I believe that we talked about this one when we were starting up one to ten of Swords. Yes, it's it's... Look, this is a sword that I think I fully acknowledge is like stupid.
00:49:11
Speaker
But I kind of love it even with that. Knowing that it's stupid. Okay. yeah Usually, when swords and guns are combined, it's not as good as either one of those things.
00:49:27
Speaker
yeah However...
00:49:32
Speaker
what Whatever they did with this one in particular really works for me. And I think it might just be because it's fucking huge. That's part of it.
00:49:44
Speaker
It's also like the most 19... When did Final Fantasy VIII come out? 98, maybe? It might have been... it maybe it was before... It might have been after 2000?
00:50:03
Speaker
99. It was 1999. It is the most 1999-ass looking thing you've ever seen in has a wallet chain. It has a wallet chain, yes.
00:50:14
Speaker
And the gun part of it is really only for looks. Like, it's just a sword. mean, but it does, like... Yeah, it's just a sword, but it is also a gun, Matt. I mean, it's got a, like...
00:50:31
Speaker
It's got a giant revolver cylinder on it. Yeah, I guess it it kind of if you pull the trigger, it kind of explodes. But, like... I mean, like that's the thing, is they made they they made the sword part bigger, and they made the gun part bigger.
00:50:49
Speaker
Yes. Than it should be. It's much bigger than a regular gun. The gun part's fucking huge. Yeah, because it's a revolver. I mean, it looks like a revolver, but it's the size of like the barrel of or the the hilt of a shotgun. Yeah. like the yeah It's a hoot, man. I kind of love it. like yeah This, I think, is the one exception...
00:51:19
Speaker
That we have to the idea that combining these things makes both of them worse. Because it is like, this one kind of owns. Like, I've never played ah Final Fantasy VIII. Because back when I was a player of Final Fantasy games, ah everyone was like, oh, that one's bad. That's the bad one. It's not as good as VII or IX.
00:51:40
Speaker
Those people were wrong. Are they? Yeah. i I mean, I believe you. I like Final Fantasy VIII lot. Yeah. And i i think I understand why people, especially in 1999, middle and high school, would say that they didn't like it.
00:52:01
Speaker
Because it's mostly a romance story.
00:52:06
Speaker
But it's good. Look, I'm giving something away by saying this, but... It's the coolest thing in the game. And the thing that made me go like, oh, this game rules, actually.
00:52:19
Speaker
so the the first like few hours of that game take place at a school. That might be another reason why people didn't like it, because you have to play a few hours in a school. I mean, but I bet those same people love Persona.
00:52:33
Speaker
Yeah. But ah some number of hours into the game, you know, every every Final Fantasy game has an airship. Yeah. Well, the school becomes the airship.
00:52:46
Speaker
That's pretty good. The school is the airship. like it takes There's a whole sequence where it just like takes off. And it's so good.
00:52:56
Speaker
Yeah, yeah Final Fantasy VIII is good. A lot of people don't like the spellcasting system in Final Fantasy VIII because it's kind of broken. Yeah.
00:53:12
Speaker
It's called the draw system. And it's just like, if you go around and draw enough magic out of the ground, you sort of kind of have infinite magic. But I loved that.
00:53:24
Speaker
So... ah My argument but but is that Final Fantasy VIII is good. And it does your argument have any impact on Squall's gunblade?
00:53:37
Speaker
I mean... Just that, you know, in spite of in spite of myself and in spite of itself, I like it. There's like a cutscene or something where ah Squall and and the other guy whose name i don't remember are like fighting and they're like sword fighting but also shooting at each other, right? Like, those may be in the ads.
00:54:02
Speaker
or something I have memories of that, and like that looked cool as shit back in the day, and I'm sure it still does.
00:54:12
Speaker
i okay so that guy is not the final boss of the game, but he is yeah he's sort of like Evil Squall, I guess. Yeah.
00:54:24
Speaker
and And that stuff is cool. and Another reason why I think like kids in 1999 high school probably didn't like Final Fantasy VIII is that the the the big bad, the big villain, is a ah witch.
00:54:40
Speaker
um And she just like she's just kind of a witch. Okay. But also, i don't like I don't dislike that either about it. It's... It's fun and and good. So she's she's not a witcher.
00:54:55
Speaker
She's not a witcher. She's not in the witcher. She's not the witcher. She's a witch. she's She's a witch who doesn't want ah the teens to be in love.
00:55:06
Speaker
And so that's why it's like ultimately a love story. Damn. Y'all can't get behind behind fighting a witch that hates love? I know, man. What are you thinking? don't know.
00:55:18
Speaker
right. Well, uh. i Matt, as you know, i have a problem. And that problem is that i often think things are appropriate even when they are not accurate. I think the prime example of this is when I was on Hard Choices, which is a ah a podcast, very, very fun podcast to be on, where ah you rank a set of characters based on fuckability.
00:55:49
Speaker
And I was on for the Batman villains ah episode. Yeah. And ah the, like, I did put Harvey Dent at number two.
00:56:05
Speaker
And I was like, because I had to. Right. And they were like, everyone else in the show was like, well, do you believe that he's the second most fuckable Batman villain? And I said, absolutely not. But I had to.
00:56:22
Speaker
i see so I see where you're going with this. yeah By the way, i I said it, but I don't know if you heard it. um Haven't been asked. Anyway... i mean, maybe... I mean, Matt, among the many words I would use to describe you, horny would never be on the list.
00:56:43
Speaker
You'd be surprised. I mean, i don't know like I don't know if I would... I don't know if I come off any hornier than you do, but
00:56:52
Speaker
But, I mean, I did like the sexy way that you just said that, so... I'm just good at hiding it, that's all. That's true. Here's... i know you're going to it to be 8, because it's from Final Fantasy 8. Yeah.
00:57:08
Speaker
But it's a 7. Well, okay. Well, that's weird, because the Buster Sword would be like a 9. Yeah. yeah Interesting, interesting, interesting. i I'm actually thinking about this in in relation to the Buster Sword.
00:57:26
Speaker
Which, I'm thinking the Buster Sword might be an 8. But we'll get there when we get there. i mean you know the sides Honestly, it's kind of less like a sword and more like a slab. That's why i i want to knock it a little bit. Because it is it' just the fucking Dragon Slayer.
00:57:45
Speaker
Yeah, but it's got them two holes in it. That you put materia in, yeah. um That's fun. We'll get there when we get there. But, yeah, i think I think the gun blade's a seven.
00:58:00
Speaker
Alright, so so i will I will resist the urge to rank it at an eight. We will rank it as as ah as a seven. Squall's gun blade. okay I am curious to know if anyone ah submits a combination gun and sword that would even come close to that ranking.
00:58:20
Speaker
I sincerely doubt it. but yeah There's plenty of time. There's plenty of time. Patrick has our next submission.
00:58:32
Speaker
It is the Warhammer 40k Emperor of Mankind's Flaming Sword. Alright, now this is one that I'm going to have to look up. I'm going to send you a link right now. Okay.
00:58:45
Speaker
Alright. it's it's a It's a figure. Because, I mean, I guess that's the main way that Warhammer 40k exists. I mean, yeah. like that's that's what That's its native medium.
00:58:57
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, there are video games and stuff, but... Yeah. But, I mean, you know, there's there's you know plenty of Zelda comics, but we wouldn't say that the Master Sword is from the Zelda comics. From comics.
00:59:08
Speaker
Yeah. Although that Master Sword from the Ishinomori comic kicks ass. um This a good sword, Matt. It's pretty cool. Here's what I like about Warhammer.
00:59:20
Speaker
um is that Warhammer knows it's dumb. And instead of trying to be less dumb, Warhammer's like, more dumb. Let's lean into it hard. Yeah.
00:59:31
Speaker
And so I love that in the future, in the grim darkness of the future, where there is only war, Only war. Think about that for a minute. There's only war.
00:59:45
Speaker
There's only war. oh the They do still use swords. Some of the swords are chainsaws. Uh-huh. But even the swords that are not chainsaws have, like, like Kirby lines on them.
01:00:05
Speaker
So that you know they're from the you know that they're from the future. yeah Like, this this sword that I'm looking at could just be a flaming sword and would look cool.
01:00:18
Speaker
But it's got these two little techno lines like the mother box. at on the At the bottom of the blade. Yeah, because it's a power sword. Because that's what swords are in the Grim Darkness the Future where there's only war. They're power swords.
01:00:37
Speaker
ah That's fucking funny, dude. I love it. Here's what's interesting about this sword to me. Because this is a a stationary figure, right? it is it is it is an unchanging
01:00:55
Speaker
piece of plastic.
01:00:59
Speaker
it this This is a sword with a blade... looks like fire. There's like a blade that's like various shades of orange.
01:01:11
Speaker
But then along the edge, there are flames coming out of it.
01:01:18
Speaker
Are we meant to think that those flames in motion crackle and move and dance like fire?
01:01:31
Speaker
like I want to see what this sword looks like in motion, but you're never going to. mean, yeah. like Are you asking, like is this sword like a piece of metal that has been wrought to look like it's on fire?
01:01:46
Speaker
Yeah. like is Is this just for appearances, or are there flames? that's definitely for real fire. Is it made of flames?
01:01:57
Speaker
I don't think it's made of flames, but I think it is on fire. Because there are also, like, I gotta say, whoever painted this particular miniature did a bang-up job. They did do a great job, yes. The torches are beautiful.
01:02:12
Speaker
The flames on the torches that goat like that have like smoke coming off of them, that are painted to look like smoke, beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. ah But yeah, that's definitely, it is a sword that is also on fire, not a sword that looks like fire.
01:02:32
Speaker
Okay. it just It raises a lot of questions. It's it's very cool looking. i mean, what does i what's the what questions does it raise, Matt? It's a sword that's on fire. That's the most straightforward thing i can imagine.
01:02:49
Speaker
How did the sword get on fire? Well, as you can see, it is technology. No, i that's not my question. My question is... Like, is it made of fire? Is it made of metal, but surrounded by fire?
01:03:06
Speaker
Is it, like we originally said, just crafted to look like flames? it is it is It is made of metal. The metal is on fire.
01:03:17
Speaker
Are those Kirby lines heating elements?
01:03:22
Speaker
And so this thing kind of works like a toaster? Presumably, yes. yeah I mean, those are the those are the technology. Those are technology.
01:03:34
Speaker
Those are technology. And the technology is it's not doing what magic does, because magic also exists. Right. But it is making the sword be on fire.
01:03:47
Speaker
Right. and So technology is making it be fire. I'm sure there is a novel. Probably. I'm sure if we can if we go to the Black Library... they'll be able to tell us all about this.
01:04:00
Speaker
um I'm going to see if there's like a wiki page about it. Oh, Matt, I bet there is. i sure do bet there is. It's cool, though. It's dope as shit.
01:04:12
Speaker
like This is one that I think we are unfamiliar with it in terms of lore, in terms of game mechanics, um but this is one I think we can rank based on vibes, and the vibes are good. They took a sword, and it's got technology on it that makes it on fire.
01:04:31
Speaker
Okay. <unk> I found a wiki page for Emperor's Sword Weapon. Okay. can you Can you link that to me real quick? Yeah. I mean, there's not a whole lot of information on it, but there's one relevant paragraph, I think. Okay. All right. This says, Touched by the Emperor's own psychic might, this finely wrought mastercrafted sword is lit from hilt to tip with leaping flames. Uh-huh.
01:04:57
Speaker
When it is swung, the burning blade draws pyrotechnic arcs through the air. That's cool as hell. ah able to This link you sent me, Matt, is broken. Is it? ah Hang on. Oh, it didn't have the the parenthetical.
01:05:11
Speaker
Okay, here we go. okay um The burning blade draws pyrotechnic arcs through the air, able to slice through the stoutest of armor with ease. Dope.
01:05:23
Speaker
Pretty good. Yeah, man. Like, I would give this sword 9. I don't know if I would give it a 9. It is dope.
01:05:37
Speaker
But I don't know if I would go, I don't know if I would say it's that dope. Okay. So 8. i would I would give it an 8. I think it's, accurate like, it's, if I'm looking at this one and I'm looking at the gunblade, I'm picking this one.
01:05:53
Speaker
Oh, me too. Yeah. Heartbeat. Yeah. Okay, so eight is what we're landing on for the Emperor of Mankind's Flaming Sword. Yeah.
01:06:05
Speaker
Okay. it's she I will say, I would maybe knock it down to, like, if we were doing um ah um of Fractions...
01:06:17
Speaker
were doing mat fractions on this? i if If it was one to X of sword plus mat fractions. um I would maybe knock it down to a 7.5 because it doesn't have enough skulls on it to really be something from Warhammer.
01:06:34
Speaker
i I like the simplicity of it. i like i like I think I've made clear in this segment so far that ah overdoing it is going to lose points with me.
01:06:48
Speaker
You've got to have just enough doing it. yeah And those two little technology lines to show that it's the future. To to but explain why it's on fire.
01:07:00
Speaker
That's just enough doing it. That's just enough doing it, yeah. i Exactly. That's why I was like, give it a 9. Because it's I do like that. well what else What else do we have on the list that is a 9? Matt.
01:07:12
Speaker
wow ah What else do we have? Elric Stormbringer. Yeah, it's not that cool. It's not that cool. you're Elric, well, the Stormbringer does kind of like break that pattern, because Stormbringer does do way too much.
01:07:27
Speaker
Basamune is a nine. The Moonlight Greatsword is a nine. It's not as cool as yeah it's not as cool as any of those. so okay I think eight's solid. Eight is good. Eight is good. that's I feel like this is like the dictionary definition of eight.
01:07:41
Speaker
Yeah. it's It's cool, but like
01:07:48
Speaker
not as cool as those other things. yeah um but i like In my head, i have just decided that those technology lines are toaster-like heating elements that keep the sword hot.
01:08:05
Speaker
Yeah, man. you You should write a Warhammer novel. Maybe I should. We should write a Warhammer novel. ah Get in touch. We did swear that we would never work together in that way.
01:08:20
Speaker
But the the occasion has perhaps arisen yeah ah for us to ah to work together. I made a solemn vow that I would never work alongside Matt Wilson.
01:08:32
Speaker
But for swords, I'm willing to make a once-in-a-lifetime exception. Yeah. ah All right. All right.
01:08:44
Speaker
I am looking something up right quick because I did we.
01:08:54
Speaker
Oh, OK.
01:08:58
Speaker
I think maybe we did.
01:09:02
Speaker
No, we did the submission. OK. Anyway, our next submission is from Ryan Bielek. And um this is the Sword of Fathoms from Critical Role Campaign 2, wielded by Fjord. Not a man of Critical Role.
01:09:20
Speaker
Never listened to Critical Role. I mean, I have an image of it here. Okay. Let's let's decide if we can do this on Vibes. Yeah, let's see if we can do it on Vibes. I'm just going to forward you the email. Okay. That seems like the easier thing.
01:09:34
Speaker
all right But I don't know anything about any of the like lore or anything behind this sword. because ive Do we have stats?
01:09:46
Speaker
Stats are useful. No stats either that I'm aware
01:09:56
Speaker
of. Despite my love of various actual ah play podcasts, I am not a a man of critical role. So it looks like this sword is a cutlass.
01:10:11
Speaker
It's got an eye on it, kind of like Lion-O's sword.
01:10:20
Speaker
And then there are other design elements that... I don't know if those are supposed to be barnacles, but they look kind of like barnacles. Yeah, those it's got it's got some barnacles. It's got like a little little map thing on it.
01:10:34
Speaker
it's it's This is a magic pirate sword. It's very much a magic pirate sword. yeah it's like It's like if a map became a sword.
01:10:47
Speaker
ah It's fine. i like it. heres Here's what I will say to Ryan. If there is lore...
01:11:00
Speaker
then so Then send that in. Because I would like to hear if there is lore. Because I, like, if someone sent in, like, you know, Wavebreaker from Worlds Beyond Number, ah an actual play podcast that I am familiar with, and I just looked at it, that would not give me the whole story.
01:11:20
Speaker
So I would like to know if there lore behind it it. If it does have other other attributes. I looked it up on a wiki.
01:11:33
Speaker
There are clearly like wildly different fan versions of this sword.
01:11:42
Speaker
ah So that is worth knowing. it is also it's It's not described as a cutlass. It's described as a falchion. Well, a falchion is ah like like a two-handed curved sword.
01:11:55
Speaker
Yeah. ah that's a set that's ah That's a game mechanic difference. Though not magical itself, the Sword of Fathoms could absorb other magical weapons and take their properties, as well as some of their physical features.
01:12:08
Speaker
It could absorb as many weapons as the wielder desired, but upon absorbing new properties, the old ones were lost.
01:12:16
Speaker
Interesting. It's like Rogue. It's like Rogue was a pirate and a sword. It's like if Rogue was a sword, yes. Now... Now, that's an intriguing dragon to chase.
01:12:33
Speaker
ah Do we feel comfortable in ranking this, or do we need not? would like Ryan to get in touch if there is any are any lore concerns, if this sword is used for anything cool, if it has a special purpose.
01:12:48
Speaker
If not, I think we can rank it based on what we know. But I would like Ryan to get in touch and let us know for the next time we do one of ten swords. So we're just going to table this one? This this sword? It's tabled.
01:13:00
Speaker
Okay. Sword is on the table. Sword's on the table, everybody. I might still call this episode Falchion anyway. You should. Because that's a cool word.
01:13:12
Speaker
It is a cool word. Okay. Our next submission... is from Robert Secundus. But I don't think we can rate either of these things. One, we've already rated.
01:13:27
Speaker
okay Which is the Chris Pachalo design of Magic Soul Sword. We've done that. That is on the list, ranked at a of respectable eight.
01:13:38
Speaker
Yes. The other submission from Robert is even Robert knows this is going to be disqualified. Oh my god. Vapor Blade, the blade you can vape. It's a knife!
01:13:50
Speaker
It's our knife! Yeah. Oh my god! People are coming at me with our own shit now, Matt!
01:14:02
Speaker
It's specifically Vapor Blade colon the knife you can vape. Oh my god.
01:14:13
Speaker
Oh my god. Well, let's move on, then. you can't You can't do this to me with my own stuff. that was we Matt, we did not drive from Asheville to Columbus, Ohio in my Kia and come up with some of the funniest bits we've ever come up with so that people could claim that Vaporblade was a sword.
01:14:43
Speaker
I don't know how you're not furious right now. I'm ready to just move on. and I'm ready to let it go. oh I'm in the flesh.
01:14:54
Speaker
This submission is from Ian Sayre. And this ah sword is Brotherhood. this This is our second Final Fantasy sword of the episode. okay This is Brotherhood, which is Titus' sword from Final Fantasy ten Let me tell you about but the sword Brotherhood from Final Fantasy X. It sucks ass.
01:15:15
Speaker
This is the big blue fishhook looking sword? Yeah. Like with the fishhook on the end? Yeah.
01:15:24
Speaker
Do you seem to have some strong feelings about Brotherhood? I i don't like it. Okay. Were you going to say you don't mind it or you like it?
01:15:35
Speaker
I mean, I think it looks cool. looks cool I think it is such a perfect example of a sword that is doing way too much.
01:15:46
Speaker
Okay.
01:15:48
Speaker
The, like, fucking bubbles on the end of the blade. Because it's because it's made of water. Because it's made of water, yeah. The, like, I don't know if that's supposed to be kind of like a whale head on the other side.
01:16:06
Speaker
The fishhook thing makes it like not very functional. I mean, Matt, matt we gave like a ton and a half slab of iron a 10.
01:16:22
Speaker
Functionality cannot be the the clinton concern. But Guts makes that thing the most functional sword. Look, Guts does exist in the interstice.
01:16:36
Speaker
if but All that sword needs is the right wielder. ah Look, I feel like... I've always felt like the design of Final Fantasy ten in general is just too much.
01:16:54
Speaker
Like, tone it down. i i
01:17:00
Speaker
I don't like the Final Fantasy designs that have too much of the like like the the cool street fashion. I think it gets to be a lot very quickly.
01:17:16
Speaker
Titus' is outfit. Titus ah is Titus, actually. Is it Tidus? It is canonically Tidus, and people will get mad at us.
01:17:27
Speaker
And I don't want to be corrected about this. um But like but why it why is it Tidus? that's just i mean that's it Why is your name Matt? But Tidus makes sense because that it's the word Tide. I mean, it's fucking Tidus because Square Enix says it's Tidus.
01:17:50
Speaker
Fine. Yeah, man. Like, I don't know.
01:17:56
Speaker
Anyway, what I'm saying is I swear that in the game they said Titus, but I i guess haven't played it in however many years since it came out. I hate his design. i hate his I hate his little bolero jacket under asymmetrical overalls.
01:18:14
Speaker
Under his overalls with shorts of different lengths. This motherfucker also has a chain wallet. He sure does. And I don't like his little chain that he wears.
01:18:26
Speaker
This guy looks like if... Like...
01:18:34
Speaker
How can i explain this? i like his boots. I do like his is yellow Doc Martens. those are Those are solid. I hate his haircut. I hate his haircut.
01:18:47
Speaker
You know what Final Fantasy X was? Visual K John Cena. That's what he looks like. You know what Final Fantasy X was? It was hubris. It was Square... I don't think they were Square Enix yet. they were They were still Square Soft.
01:19:05
Speaker
it was like It was them going like, ah, we're making our first PlayStation 2 Final Fantasy. all of our All of our previous Final Fantasies, big hits.
01:19:15
Speaker
We could do anything. Let's make the weirdest looking 2002 hero we can possibly think of.
01:19:28
Speaker
There are other characters in Final Fantasy X that are cool. That have cool designs. But... i don't know I don't know what they were thinking with Tidus.
01:19:41
Speaker
I...
01:19:45
Speaker
I don't um don't like Tidus. Yeah. I don't like Tidus. ah There's a lot of asymmetry in Final Fantasy ten Yes.
01:19:59
Speaker
And, i don't know, sometimes it works. But it mostly doesn't. I don't think they should have made the guy in Final Fantasy look so much like Cloud.
01:20:11
Speaker
which Which guy? Tidus. Oh, okay. Because he looks like like he looks like Cloud where it like cloud fucking was in an explosion at the clothes factory. Yeah, it looks like cloud's one of one of Cloud's goofy costumes.
01:20:27
Speaker
Yeah. If Cloud, like Abba, could only write his clothes off on his taxes if it was cleared that they were for performances only and could not be worn as street clothes...
01:20:41
Speaker
then this Then he would look like Tidus. Like, they have the same face and basically the same hair. I don't like him. I don't think the sword is bad. i do think it should have been more clear whether this sword was actually made of water or whether it just looked like water.
01:21:03
Speaker
Well, i I don't mind the sword looking like it's made out of water, but just make it that. Just have that be the sword. but But depending on which version of it you're looking at, in some versions it is very clear that, like, oh, this is made of water. In some versions it's just like, oh, it's blue.
01:21:21
Speaker
Like, don't know, man. I will say, I don't hate the sword. I do think it's got a lot going on. Too much.
01:21:32
Speaker
too Too much going on. i like the I kind of like the fish hook.
01:21:37
Speaker
But it doesn't need a fish hook, and is that is it Sin? Is that Sin um the end of it? like like where the Like the guard? is that Is that Sin?
01:21:49
Speaker
i mean, maybe. like ah Like a representation of Sin? Yeah, I don't know. is it Or is it just like a fish? The villain from from Final Fantasy X. Yeah, you know, his dad.
01:22:01
Speaker
Spoilers. His Who's so ah hungry he could eat a shoe puff. fuck Matt Wilson is out here saying Final Fantasy VIII is good, Final Fantasy X sucks.
01:22:15
Speaker
I stick by it. What's your thoughts on my Final Fantasy IX? I never played it. It's good. i ah i i Okay, this was me being like a teenage idiot.
01:22:27
Speaker
i I saw that Final Fantasy IX was like a throwback, and I was like... That was my reaction to Final Fantasy IX. Yeah, ain't no in know motorcycles in that one.
01:22:39
Speaker
Yeah. was like, ugh. where Where's the technology?
01:22:46
Speaker
Yeah. 10 was my last Final Fantasy for a while, though. It, like, turned me off to a Final Fantasy game. Yeah, 10 is what kind of killed it for me, too. Yeah, like... 11 was an online game, which didn't help. Yeah. and But I didn't play 12.
01:23:04
Speaker
You didn't get into X2? I didn't play X2. You didn't play X2 where Yuna had guns? That's the only thing I know about that game. I mean... I would probably like Final Fantasy X2 now, but like I didn't play it.
01:23:17
Speaker
I didn't play XIII, which I think was another online one. i I didn't play another one until XIV. I didn't play another one until Final Fantasy VII colon remake.
01:23:31
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. I played XIV, which was fine. I'll tell you what's good, though. Dragon Quest. Dragon Quest has got some good-ass swords in it. Final Fantasy XIV was like the return to like Final Fantasy with technology.
01:23:45
Speaker
And it just meant driving around in a car. yeah that's the one where you kind of drive around and you don't have to do anything except like hit the A button. Right? More or less. yeah There's a lot of cooking. There's a lot of cooking in Final Fantasy XIV, and that I could get behind.
01:24:01
Speaker
don't know, man. I don't hate this sword. I don't love XIV was no fourteen was a fourteen was a Another online one. I must be thinking of 15. Whichever one... Yeah, 15 is the one where you drive it around in a car. So that's the one that I played.
01:24:18
Speaker
Anyway, ah we're to have to find a happy medium on this, because I don't like that sword at all. i I don't... I don't hate it, Matt. Do we want to... Okay.
01:24:29
Speaker
I think the the only fair thing to do is say it's a 5. I'm about to save this picture, and I swear to God, if it's a WebP, I'm going to flip my shit. The biggest enemy to WebP. Oh my god!
01:24:42
Speaker
It was a WebP. And the biggest, our biggest enemy is WebP.
01:24:50
Speaker
i talking about I talk about WebP and I sound like Kendrick Lamar. I'm like, I'm the biggest hater.
01:24:58
Speaker
I hate the way that you're a foot-up image that I can't put in a Google sheet. Yeah, why doesn't it work with anything?
01:25:09
Speaker
Why doesn't it work with anything? Okay, it's what's especially weird is that Google made it. It's a Google-made image format, and you can't put it in a Google Sheet. why can't I put it in fucking Google Sheets?
01:25:23
Speaker
Yeah. have take a screenshot of a picture. God almighty. It's like Franz Kafka wrote the trial and then invented the WebP. Damn. let's ah Look at look at ah ah johnny Johnny Literacy over here.
01:25:42
Speaker
ah the The only fair thing, I think, is to say that this is a is a five.

Rating Fictional Swords

01:25:47
Speaker
I mean, I don't love it. um don't hate it. ah five ah five would put it on the level of the Ryder Blush.
01:26:00
Speaker
I mean, if it were up to me, I'd say it's like a three. I mean, a three is is the Batleth, and I think this is better than the Batleth. Then maybe it's a four. Okay, I think it's i think it's a four.
01:26:11
Speaker
It's certainly not a ten. i was not even tempted. Yeah.
01:26:18
Speaker
Alright, our next submission is from Devin McCullen. Okay.
01:26:25
Speaker
Who ah has sent in Greenhilt sword from the Order of the Stick. Okay, now this now this is this is an interesting one.
01:26:39
Speaker
ah Because it is, as the name implies, this is from the Order order of the Stick webcomic, of which I was and am ah quite a fan.
01:26:52
Speaker
ah I haven't read it in a while because it updates irregularly, so I like to have like a hundred pages or so to get through. But ah it is... It's a comic about stick figures, right?
01:27:05
Speaker
Yes, yes. So this sword... is is a it's a stick figure sword. So aesthetically challenging.
01:27:19
Speaker
Right. it's ah It's the most basic drawing of a sword. and it But it does have a green hilt. It's colored with a green hilt. Yeah. And it is the ah it is the namesake sword of Roy Greenhilt, who is the ah the the leader of the the eponymous order of the stick, of the party.
01:27:39
Speaker
And oh it is a sword with a green hilt. And that's it. But it is narratively important.
01:27:53
Speaker
And it does have the ability to deal additional damage to the undead, which is pretty cool. Yeah, i like that. I have virtually no...
01:28:09
Speaker
familiarity with this. i I think I've read some Order of the Stick comics, but not...
01:28:17
Speaker
i've i've haven't I've never kept up with it regularly. now i feel like I remember there being like an animation that I remember seeing a long time ago that was like an Order of the Stick thing.
01:28:32
Speaker
But I have, like again, like virtually no... familiarity with the story. ah I don't recall there being an animation.
01:28:44
Speaker
Okay. It must have just been in the same style. ah We have discussed that the Z-Sword breaks immediately.
01:28:58
Speaker
The Green Hill Sword also does famously break. When the Order of the Stick, in their first adventure, get to the Lich that they're trying to fight, ah Roy attacks and the Lich breaks the sword.
01:29:13
Speaker
And then there is a whole strip that is just Roy kind of staring at his sword and having like memories about it. And then he um flips the fuck out and tears the Lich's head off and throws him into a portal that explodes.
01:29:31
Speaker
Which is pretty good.
01:29:34
Speaker
And then he does get it reforged. And Matt, Matt, you know I love it when a sword's reforged. Oh, yeah, dude. Now, is that the same sword, then? Is the reforged sword still the Green Hill? Now, we're getting we're getting into some real ship of Theseus stuff here, Matt.
01:29:51
Speaker
Well, the the reason I ask is because we have ranked or rated But...
01:30:00
Speaker
nacill
01:30:03
Speaker
but I would assume we would separately rank Anduril. We would definitely rank Anduril, the Flame of the West, ah separately from Narsil, the Red and White Flame. oh Absolutely.
01:30:16
Speaker
Of course. um But I think in this case, first of all, Narsil was broken at the end of the Second Age and reforged at the end of the Third Age.
01:30:27
Speaker
That's a lot of time. That's a lot of time. By Shire reckoning. And it got a different name. And it got a different name. And runes were carved into the blade. Even though the Shards of Narsil were still sharp.
01:30:41
Speaker
Correct. Famously. Still sharp. Still sharp.
01:30:46
Speaker
What need have we have broken salt? Sean being pretty good, man.
01:30:53
Speaker
oh But this is this is like... repaired and made a little bit better with ah a magical metal they find in a meteorite.
01:31:04
Speaker
So i would I do think this counts as the same sword. oh There there is like a like a bit of a journey to get it ah ah reforged. I do like that Roy does not like will not use another sword.
01:31:22
Speaker
like He starts using a great club instead of a great sword. ah Because he doesn't want to use another sword until his is fixed. That's a pretty cool bit. ah I like it.
01:31:34
Speaker
It is aesthetically a stick figure. And in terms of like, not not to do this, but like in terms of like power rating, it's, you know, fine.
01:31:48
Speaker
But I think it does have narrative significance that I think makes it a little bit above average. I would give it a six. I think. Okay. I completely have to defer to you on this. Well, wait, we gave Spawn Sword a 6, and I do like Spawn Sword.
01:32:04
Speaker
I mean, i it sounds like it's as as narratively important as Spawn Sword. Yeah. We gave Narcil a 6. so But is it not as cool as Spawn Sword? I don't think I mean, Spawn Sword's pretty... Spawn Sword's so fucking dumb.
01:32:18
Speaker
I love it. I think maybe the Green Hill Sword gets a 5. Okay. Okay. but i mean like But I feel like that is to its credit, because it is like a 5 should be like, yes, that's a sword.
01:32:36
Speaker
Right? right Yeah. yeah yeah yeah yeah
01:32:40
Speaker
ah ah By our rating, 5 is average. Like, 5 is a sword. Yeah. Right. Like, anything below 5, not so good.
01:32:52
Speaker
Anything above 5, better than... yeah Standard. yeah That kind of makes me want to drop Brotherhood down to a three. i think I think it's fine at a four.
01:33:06
Speaker
i'm Okay. Okay. Our next submission is from Jason Ledoux, who has submitted The Ebony Blade, The Sword of the Black Knight.
01:33:22
Speaker
Man. From Marvel Comics. Yeah, I know what it's from.
01:33:29
Speaker
I got nothing for the Black Knight, dude.
01:33:34
Speaker
I got nothing. Arguably the coolest thing about the Black Knight is his sword.
01:33:42
Speaker
Yeah, it's a bit of like Talk about a five, man. it's a it It's a cursed sword that can cut through anything. i like that it's a different color.
01:33:56
Speaker
for Black. A regular sword. Yeah. yeah Black and red. Yeah. And it was forged by Merlin, which is cool. And it was forged from a meteorite, which is also cool.
01:34:08
Speaker
But, I mean, yes, both of those things are cool. But here's the thing, Matt. If you want to talk about Merlin and swords, there's two cooler swords in like that Merlin is adjacent to.

i agree entirely. i will say, this is another sword that inexplicably got linked back to Null.
01:34:38
Speaker
Fuck off with that. Man, they should have called that crossover X of Swords. There was a lot of swords involved in that. Fuck off with Null having some connection to every sword, Marvel.
01:34:55
Speaker
Sick of that guy. I wish I had a connection to every sword.

Rant on Image Formats

01:35:01
Speaker
Yeah. But yeah, i don't I don't have much for Dane Whitman, I i i will say.
01:35:06
Speaker
But I think it's a kind of, without a doubt, the the coolest thing about Black Knight is his sword. I mean, yeah. i mean, yeah, Matt. Kind of the coolest thing about me is my sword.
01:35:22
Speaker
Like, it's a fucking sword, dude.
01:35:26
Speaker
I don't know. like I mean, I threw anything. youre Your first blush was five, and I think that's probably on point. The Green Hill Sword is, that's a sword, brackets, positive. ah The Ebony Blade is, that's a sword, brackets, negative.
01:35:47
Speaker
it's The Ebony Blade is an example of a sword that I should think is cooler than I do. yeah like It's got all these things about it that make it cool. or make it like but That should be cool.
01:35:59
Speaker
But I still don't care.
01:36:04
Speaker
There's a couple of panels where it looks really cool. But mostly because it's a black sword and that looks cool. If this is a website, Matt, I'm going to lose my fucking mind.
01:36:14
Speaker
are you Are you getting the cover of Black Knight Curse of the Ebony Blade, Volume 1, Number 1? Oh, no, maybe I should. that's pretty cool It looks pretty cool on that cover, I'll tell you. Alright, let's let's see Curse of... the Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:36:32
Speaker
The kind of action shot where it's all yeah red. All red and black, yeah. Where it's Mike Allred. like
01:36:42
Speaker
and I imagine if Mike Allred had drawn that. um it would look pretty good. itd be It'd be dope, yeah. It appears in Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. And ah the screenshot that they have on here, um that blade is not black.
01:37:00
Speaker
There are some drawings of it where it isn't. Which is... is It's called the Ebony Blade. Goddamn WebP, Matt. It's a goddamn WebP.
01:37:13
Speaker
They're all WebPs. If you're pulling it from a wiki, it's going to be a WebP.
01:37:20
Speaker
Why don't you once you like start uploading fucking JPEG 2000? Wait, here's a JPEG. This is a JPEG. That's okay. I already took a fucking screenshot of it, which is in a PNG g format.
01:37:33
Speaker
Hey, PNG format. I'll take a pe i'm like dan i' matt ah PNG. fuck with PNGs all day long. Are we going to do every image format ever? I mean, we could do that right now, if you want to. we I would say PNG, JPEG.
01:37:53
Speaker
JIF. JIF. JIF. GIF. giff GIF. oh I'd say, like...
01:38:03
Speaker
after After GIF, I don't know, bitmaps maybe? I'm mad at WebP's, they're at the bottom of the list. WebP is like number 1,000. Yeah. Because you got TIFF in there. a TIFF I would put, you gotta have a high quality TIFF if you're making comics.
01:38:21
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. So I would put those at a like i put those like maybe right under GIF. PSD. That's not really an image format as much. as I mean, it'll show up if you search a Mac for images.
01:38:34
Speaker
It'll show you PSDs, but PSDs are... That's a Photoshop document. that That's a working photo Photoshop document. That's true. You ain't gonna see a PSD with a web browser. like That's not gonna happen.
01:38:49
Speaker
H-E-I-C. No one fucking uses that shit. I mean, if if it's if it's on your iPhone, that's what it is. I turn that shit off. I go into my settings and I say, do not save this as a and an HEIC.
01:39:04
Speaker
Save it as a JPEG. Like a human being. You weird robot.
01:39:12
Speaker
ah EPS. I don't even know what that is. and It's like a...
01:39:20
Speaker
a vector file, ah if I remember right. Hey, what's our next sword mount? um I think we're done, actually. Oh, okay. <unk> We're out of time. And I have to finish this. I have to not edit it and put it together.
01:39:36
Speaker
