Meet the Hosts: Chris and Matt

00:00:53
Speaker
Hello everybody, and welcome to War Rocket Ajax. This is the internet's most explosive comic book and pop culture podcast, and us, we're your hosts. That's right, my name is Chris Sims, with me as always is Matt Wilson. Matt, if I could play any video game as a character from a different video game, I would play Bloodborne as Samus Aran.
00:01:21
Speaker
Pretty good choice. Pretty good choice. Yeah, man. Solid. Yeah. let's see Let's see how those long-armed freakos like it when you're a fully armored half bird, half Metroid, half human, all woman with a gun arm. see ah Let's see how they like it then.
00:01:53
Speaker
But Matt, my question for you is, what video game would you play as a character from a different video game? I would play any video game as Mega Man. ah Similar to Samus Aran.
00:02:05
Speaker
Also has a has a a gun for an arm, yeah. Has a gun for an arm, and I think that would be very useful in many games. Melee combat would not have to bother with it, because mega man Mega Man not only has a gun arm, but steals all of his enemies' weapons as well. That's true.
00:02:27
Speaker
So, ah I think Mega Man is, like, I don't know, like, give me Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, but let me be Mega Man. But you have a gun. Yeah. that sounds i feel like what you and I both want is for things to be a little different around here these days.
00:02:46
Speaker
A little more modern, maybe. maybe ah maybe Maybe everybody's been getting a little too comfortable with the range of a sword. That's right, yeah. Let's let's let's expand our horizons a little bit.
00:03:01
Speaker
How about that?

Patreon Thanks and Benefits

00:03:06
Speaker
We have a great show for everybody this week. We are going to be raiding some swords once again. Yes, it is time to do more 1 to 10 of swords.
00:03:17
Speaker
And that's going to be a fun time. When we get to that, but Chris, before we get to writing swords, we have some business to take care of.
00:03:28
Speaker
The first piece of business is thinking of newest supporters over on Patreon. That's right, Matt. Now, these are the people who want to support the show. They want to help us out. They can do that. And they don't need to go down to 758 Gimmick Street. They don't need no kettlebells.
00:03:43
Speaker
All they need to do is go to patreon.com slash warrocketajax, where they can kick in as little as a dollar a month to help the show keep going, help us do everything that we do here, and would say most importantly, particularly for me at this juncture in my life, help us pay those gimmicks they keep sending of the mail called bills.
00:04:01
Speaker
I believe we have read the names of all of our new ah Patreon supporters. I think I said Andrew Horton last week. Well, thank you, Andrew. Just in case. Just in case you're getting a second thank you, Andrew.
00:04:18
Speaker
but ah are And that will be another you you must now double your pledge.
00:04:28
Speaker
ah We are currently sitting at 430 paid patrons on our Patreon, which is a a pretty good number, but boy, it it sure could go up. It sure could go up. sure could go up We sure could get to that number of beasts. That ain't the highest number there is.
00:04:47
Speaker
It ain't. um we could If we could get to the number of the beasts... Of paid Patreon supporters. Man, that would feel real nice. I will sacrifice Matt Wilson to Satan.
00:04:59
Speaker
Yeah. it was It was bound to happen one way or another. You all knew it was going to end this way. Matt even did a comic about it. That's true. That is true.
00:05:10
Speaker
Thank you to all of our Patreon supporters. We do we do appreciate that very much. if you are at a certain level of the Patreon, the $15 level, you can join the Gimmick Street Preservation Society. We do not currently have any new Gimmick Street Preservation Society locations to read out

Patreon Gimmick Street Suggestions

00:05:28
Speaker
on the show. So if you are at the $15 level and you haven't sent in a spot...
00:05:34
Speaker
to put on Gimmick Street as a member of the Gimmick Street Preservation Society, you should do that as soon as possible and get that read out on the show. Because I think sometime in the next little while, I'm going to allow people to place a second location on Gimmick Street as a member of the Gimmick Street Preservation Society. So if you don't have one yet,
00:06:00
Speaker
Send that in and we'll get that on the show. Just send that it to me as a Patreon message, please. That's funny, Matt, because you know what's on 758 Gimmick Street. You know what's there.
00:06:11
Speaker
What is on 758 Gimmick Street? It's the second location. it's oh of course it's the second location. Gimmick Street's hottest nightclub, the second location. You always want to go to a second location.
00:06:23
Speaker
You always want to go to the second location. And that's what's at 750 Gimmick Street. the Yeah, it's it's actually where Gimmick Street intersects 2nd Avenue. ah ah The 2nd National Bank is there.
00:06:35
Speaker
And ah the Janus Building is on the opposite corner. um And let me tell you, they... But you've got to watch out for Two-Face. You've got to watch out for Harvey Dent when you're hanging out at the second location.
00:06:49
Speaker
You've definitely got to watch out for Two-Face there. it's It's funny that it's it it intersects with Second Avenue um when it is in clearly in the 700s. Look, the city planners of Gimmick Street, who are, I believe, you and me,
00:07:05
Speaker
Yep, that's us. and And sometimes our listeners. um I'm going to go ahead and say it. Not great at civil engineering. Yeah, that is true. ah But folks... Maybe they're trying their best.
00:07:19
Speaker
And maybe they've been doing this bit for a while. And maybe something occurred to them and they thought it would be funny, but I guess somebody wanted to nitpick. i Look, you know, Gimmick Street is... it plays by its own rules.
00:07:36
Speaker
oh yeah behold it's It's a loose cannon gimmick street. Yeah. It's a loose cannon and it's loose cannon C-A-N-O-N. It's both. It's both of those things. Actually, the loose cannon is actually across the street from the second location. Save that for next week.
00:07:53
Speaker
No, we're going to have plenty of we're gonna have plenty of of of new locations from our lovely $15 backers.
00:08:04
Speaker
next Next week. I can feel it in my bones. ah Well, ah thank you to our Patreon supporters for helping us keep paying those gimmicks they keep sending in the mail call bills.
00:08:15
Speaker
If you can help us out on Patreon, you get some cool stuff. If you're just at the $1 level of Patreon, you get ad-free episodes of every single show that we do.
00:08:27
Speaker
ah like They're ad-free. You get them on a special feed through Patreon that goes straight to your podcatcher. but the The ads are cut out of your episodes of War Rocket Ajax and everything else that we do here at Klytus Media.
00:08:46
Speaker

That's outtakes from the show that I cut out and put exclusively on Patreon. All of that is available at the $5 level and the bonus content that you get there.
00:09:07

At the $20 level, you get all of that stuff I just talked about and our annual t-shirt.
00:09:29
Speaker
I don't usually make any requests for for people to draw things on this show. I don't i don't make like a lot of requests for fan art. You know? Yeah. I think 1 to 10 of Swords, I to X of Swords, needs a mascot And I think it should be a lady named Wanda Ten of Swords.
00:09:53
Speaker
That's very good.
00:09:57
Speaker
And like I'm not, i'm like I'm just saying, if the spirit moves you, and you are artistically inclined, maybe draw Wanda Ten of Swords. and send And send it to us. I think that would be fun.
00:10:10
Speaker
I like that a lot. I like that a lot, and someone should definitely design Wanda Ten of Swords. Wanda Ten of Swords.
00:10:23
Speaker
Is it three names or two names? No, it's two names. It's Wanda Ten of Swords.
00:10:30
Speaker
Okay. I thought it it was Wanda Ten of Swords. Okay. But if you say it's two names, it's two names. Well, Ten of Swords spelled X-O-F-S-W-O-R-D-S.
00:10:47
Speaker
If you're unable to help us monetarily, one โ€“ You can draw one to ten of swords. You can draw one to ten of swords, but you can also help us out by leaving us a five-star review on the podcasting app that you use, whatever that may be.
00:11:00
Speaker
Or you can um give us some some word of mouth, let your friends and family know about this show, War Rocket Ajax, and that they would enjoy listening to it and that they should go join our Patreon channel. And then everybody's happy. that all it

Checks and Wrecks Segment

00:11:16
Speaker
takes?
00:11:16
Speaker
Is that all it takes for everybody to be happy, Matt? Only one way to find out. Chris, with that, it's time for some

Chris Talks Gaming Experiences

00:11:25
Speaker
Checks and Wrecks. What do you say? Let's do it, Matt.
00:11:31
Speaker
Chris, what would you like to check in with this week? Matt, I have begun playing Hollow Knight Socks on. It finally happened. it's It's finally happening. I've been in a a real Metroidvania mood, a real mood-troidvania lately. Because I replayed Bloodstained, a game that I dearly love. ah I am a a guest on the Retronauts series of the Metroidvania book club. It was my turn to pick what we talked about for the next episode, and I picked Bloodstained.
00:12:07
Speaker
And I played the shit out of it. Again. Like, I have played it pretty intensely for like like the two times I've played it before.
00:12:24
Speaker
And I played the bejesus out of it this time. oh And I finished it, and I was like, wow, what a great game. Can't wait to talk about it. But i'm in I'm still in that mood, Troidvania.
00:12:36
Speaker
So... i fire I was like, let's do it. Let's fire up Hollow Knight Silksong. I know Matt likes it. yeah And hopefully it won't be too difficult. And here's what I'll say.
00:12:48
Speaker
I didn't die at all fighting the first boss. okay I did die a lot fighting the second boss.
00:13:01
Speaker
That sounds about right, yeah. Yeah. I'm worried that I might not be good enough at video games to play this. I don't think that's true. I think you just have to kind of get over a ah little difficulty hump, and then you will be fine.
00:13:20
Speaker
Let tell you something. If Samus was in this game, things would be a little different. It would be different. Yeah. i I thought you would surely have been inspired to jump back into Metroidvanias by the announcement of another a new Castlevania game um that looks pretty classically Metroidvania-ish.
00:13:46
Speaker
Very exciting. I mean, here's the thing, Matt. I'll believe it when I see it.
00:13:52
Speaker
Like, there's also a new Bloodstained coming out. Oh, wow. Okay. I saw it on Steam the other day. ah It's ah Bloodstained, The Scarlet Engagement.
00:14:05
Speaker
Which is pretty exciting. ah Bloodstained is the like the true heir of Castlevania. Well, it's it's got the guy.
00:14:19
Speaker
It's got the guy. Yeah. And that's very exciting for me. I am so cautiously optimistic. So cautious about a new Castlevania.
00:14:33
Speaker
Like, Matt, I want it to be good. it's it's the The title Belmont's Curse, and the fact that Trevor Belmont is in it. I don't believe Trevor Belmont is the playable character.
00:14:46
Speaker
Weird. But he is in it. ec That excites me. That that is pretty is pretty cool. Yeah.
00:14:56
Speaker
So it's a Castlevania III? It's a Castlevania III offshoot, yes. It's a Castlevania III Actually, I guess Symphony of the Night is Castlevania III Well, I thought ke of the Symphony of the Night was ah Bloodlines too Well, it's kind of both.
00:15:16
Speaker
Dracula X2? Dracula X2, yeah. Dracula X2. Yeah.
00:15:26
Speaker
Listen, video games? They're complicated. But I'm playing Silksong, and gosh, it's like... It's such a beautiful game already. Like, in the the very early days of playing this game.
00:15:42
Speaker
It's... it's already like, oh yeah, Hollow Knight. That's maybe the best one. so yeah That one's maybe, you know, of all Metroidvania, that one might be the best.
00:15:56
Speaker
I think Silksong is equally good. um If you can overcome that, just like, a little bit of difficulty at the start. um I will say this, though. I still haven't beaten the final boss.
00:16:11
Speaker
Interesting. Interesting. You choose to reveal this to me now. The final boss is is hard. Is hard. um like And this is the this is the real final boss, not the fake final boss.
00:16:24
Speaker
at Man, I don't know if I've got it in me for there to be real and fake final bosses these days.
00:16:34
Speaker
um um I'm old. I'm tired. I work with fucking children.
00:16:41
Speaker
None of that's... I mean, I'm old and tired, but I don't but don't work with literal or metaphorical children. But yes, playing Silksong, very excited to get into it. Not my rec this week, ah because it like I feel like I'm extremely late to the party on this.
00:16:58
Speaker
I feel like if you are interested in playing Silksong, you're not holding out to see what I think. But ah we'll see what happens as I ah move further into this gross world of bugs and commentary on the nature of religion.
00:17:17
Speaker
Matt, what have you been up to this week?

Matt's Home Updates and Highlander Tribute

00:17:22
Speaker
Chris, i sent you a picture of this. I actually bought ah this mount weeks ago, but have been unable to to use it because of of all the the stuff ah with Marlene breaking her ankle and everything. But finally, ah because Marlene is is recovering, she can she can actually put some weight on her foot now and drive and do some other stuff.
00:17:50
Speaker
I was able to find the time to put up ah my sword, mount my sword on the wall. Hell yeah. You got me for Christmas. Hell yeah.
00:18:02
Speaker
Duncan McCloud's Katana from the Highlander TV series is now mounted on my office wall. Hell yeah. And it is a two, like it's, it's two layers of, or two mounts, places to mount things. So the scabbard and the sword are both, um, mounted,
00:18:25
Speaker
um separately Classic Katana style. Classic Katana style. um But yes, that's what that's what I've been up to. i I have been putting things on the wall because not only did I do that, I also got um Marlene's birthday was a a couple weeks ago.
00:18:48
Speaker
And what I got her for her birthday was a new record player. um We have had... the record the The vinyl record player that we've had in our house um since we first started dating. like The very first Christmas present I bought her was a record player.
00:19:08
Speaker
And we had had that record player ever since then. And so it seemed like it was time to get a new one. Right around 20 years later. and And so um I bought a new record player that had like you know speakers that are good and all of that kind of stuff.
00:19:25
Speaker
And Marlene said, I really want to put up something next to it where like we can display the record that's playing. Like display the the sleeve.
00:19:38
Speaker
So I also mounted one of those on the wall. Those are fine. i've got I've got a couple of those for the few records that I own. Yeah, ah so ah I'm mounting stuff on the wall, baby.
00:19:52
Speaker
wait it' is Is Matt Wilson about to drag me out of this dungeon? Because it sounds like we got a wall master over here.
00:19:59
Speaker
Happy 40th anniversary, The Legend of Zelda. I was dearly hoping, with my entire being, that you were about to say that you got Marlena's sword.
00:20:12
Speaker
We're not there yet. yeah ah Marlene is not a a a person of swords. she She is not, but... but ah shes She's a 10, but she's not a 10 of swords.
00:20:26
Speaker
Are you a 10 of swords? Because you're the only 10 I sword. No! No, Matt!
00:20:37
Speaker
Anyway, there's a sword on the wall now. and And it's cool. I'm happy it's there. I've got to put up some more art in my office. I've i've vastly kind of like messed around with putting up new art in my office and moving things around. But I've got to do more.
00:20:54
Speaker
I still have art that is not up. And now, God forbid, if anyone breaks in they'll immediately leave because they'll be like, oh shit, this guy is a badass.
00:21:05
Speaker
And they won't be able to get to the sword immediately because it's too high up.
00:21:12
Speaker
I mounted it pretty high on the wall. Good, good. ah Smart man, smart man. Good decision. Chris, it's time for some recommendations. What do you have to recommend?

Podcast and Series Recommendations

00:21:21
Speaker
Matt, I would like to recommend a podcast.
00:21:25
Speaker
Because I believe if you are listening to this very show, then you probably enjoy Podcasted Entertainment. ah And I have a show that ah was recommended to me both by AC, my wife, and ah by a friend of the show and friend of ours, Ted Anderson, who has ah ah who told me about ah If Books Could Kill.
00:21:51
Speaker
You might remember that years and years ago, I recommended You're Wrong About, a ah podcast ah with ah Sarah Marshall and Michael Hobbs at the time, which Discussing various like things in pop culture that people have misconceptions about.
00:22:07
Speaker
And particularly the episodes that they did that were about reading Satanic Panic books, like Michelle Remembers and ah The Satan Seller...
00:22:18
Speaker
ah And they did, I believe they did Go Ask Alice as well, ah just to to complete the set. Those episodes are great. ah Michael Hobbs no longer does that podcast, but he does do a podcast called If Books Could Kill, which is a podcast where he and his co-host, who also does the 5 to 4 podcast about the the Supreme Court, Michael and Peter,
00:22:43
Speaker
review, do in-depth, well-researched reviews of self-help books you buy at airports.
00:22:52
Speaker
That's the entire show. So there's there's one about The Secret. There's one about Rich Dad, Poor Dad. There's one about Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus.
00:23:04
Speaker
ah There's They're hitting them all. They've got like ah ah one about ah Elon Musk's biography. They're really, really good and highly recommended.
00:23:15
Speaker
um i I have not listened to ah the one about The Game, ah the pickup artist book, because I kind of feel like I know everything I need to know about The Game.
00:23:30
Speaker
But I did listen to The Rules, ah which is similarly wild. So definitely check that out if books could kill. If you've always been curious about books that can make you a better manager, then this is the podcast for you.
00:23:48
Speaker
ah
00:23:51
Speaker
ah Matt, what would you like to recommend? Chris, I would like to recommend a program, a television show, a streaming series, an animated streaming series. Is it on Internet Flickering Pictures?
00:24:07
Speaker
It is on Internet Flickering Pictures. Interesting, interesting. It is um the new show for which our friend of the show, Daniel Kibblesmith, is a writer. In fact, he is the credited writer of the second episode, which is Santa-centric.
00:24:26
Speaker
And that also ah has Paul F. Tompkins in it as um a a Santa. um The show is called Strip Law. And um it is just like an animated comedy about lawyers in Las Vegas.
00:24:44
Speaker
And it is very funny. I enjoy it a whole bunch. Adam Scott ah voices the lead character. um Every character has a funny name because, you know, it's a funny show.
00:25:01
Speaker
um But it is Adam Scott as Lincoln Gum with a B at the end. Janelle James plays his assistant, who is also a magician. Her name is Sheila Flambe.
00:25:16
Speaker
That's pretty good. Yeah. Steven Root, all-time great Steven Root, ah plays ah one of the investigators for the firm whose name is Glimm, with an M, Borchman.
00:25:30
Speaker
And then Irene Gum is ah Lincoln's, I think she's his niece. um And then Keith David is in every episode. um He plays a rival lawyer named Steve Nichols.
00:25:44
Speaker
And Steve Nichols and Lincoln Gum's mom โ€“ yeah, Lincoln Gum's mom were in a firm together called Nichols and Gum. And their ads were like, Nichols and Gum, it's what's what's what's in your pocket.
00:26:02
Speaker
That's really good. Yeah. ah It's a funny show. um It's 10 episodes. you can i We pretty much watched them all in one go. of just like Want to watch the next one? Yeah. ah Because every episode is funny. um I do think Daniel's episode is one of the funniest. It has a gag about um a lawyer being a double threat.
00:26:30
Speaker
And Chris, know what a double threat lawyer is? i do not. um They're a great lawyer and also tall. back And so that there's a lawyer who appears who is a a good lawyer who is also tall.
00:26:45
Speaker
ah ah Yeah, I enjoy strip law a whole bunch. It's a lot of kind of legal goofiness and Vegas jokes.
00:26:56
Speaker
ah So if that that sounds like your interest, ah you should you should definitely check out Strip Law on Netflix.
00:27:07
Speaker
um And it's also got that titmouse style of animation. ah that I feel like is kind of... it The animation reminds me most of Metalocalypse.
00:27:22
Speaker
Okay. So if you remember and liked Metalocalypse, I think you'll dig the animation of Strip Law as well. um I don't know if I really liked Metalocalypse, but I did like Dr. Roxo the rock and roll clown. He did cocaine. He did cocaine.
00:27:37
Speaker
ah Yep, that's my recommendation. Strip Law on Netflix. Go watch it. I'm saving Strip Law. I've i've been ah saving it for this weekend yeah ah to to really sit down and watch it. ah And i I did not know that ah the god Keith David was in it.
00:27:59
Speaker
So that is a that's a shocking surprise for me. There's a whole episode about Lincoln Gum and ah Steve Nichols coaching rival children's basketball teams.
00:28:12
Speaker
Uh-huh. Very good. Very good. That's my recommendation, Chris. That does it for our Checks and Recs, which means it's time to talk about some comics. Let's do it.

Comic Discussion: Wrestle Heist and Spider-Man

00:28:24
Speaker
The texture choice for this week, Chris, is none other than the franchise, Kyle Starks. Wrestle Heist number three. i In the same way that like I will face God and walk backwards into hell...
00:28:43
Speaker
is like a drill. Quote, the fact that ah monsters don't know how to love, they only know how to covet, is in Kyle Starks' wrestle heist, is kind is like, wild.
00:29:01
Speaker
As part of like a beautifully tragic story about... like A character who is described as not just the greatest woman wrestler of all time, but the greatest wrestler that Sterling Steele has ever seen. yeah gets in the wrestling promotion in other...
00:29:22
Speaker
trapped in ah you know the wrestling promotion ah like in in drugs and other ah bad shit ah by the the evil promoter. Yeah, a story that is um heavily inspired by real life.
00:29:43
Speaker
The peak Emily Everest. Yeah. ah She, but like, I think she's kind of China. yeah Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
00:29:55
Speaker
But like she also has like a twin sister, so she's kind of like Nikki Bella. Yeah. I feel like the details of her story are very much like... In the way that there's a character in this who's kind of the ultimate warrior, like she is...
00:30:11
Speaker
is a loose interpretation of China. We do also get the character who is very clearly influenced by the ultimate warrior, who's incredible.
00:30:22
Speaker
Beowulf. Beowulf. Yes. i we Okay, so like we had seen Beowulf before in the series. Yes. But he he really like comes out to shine in this issue because it's revealed that, first of all,
00:30:40
Speaker
He speaks like the Ultimate Warrior speaks in promos, just normally. Yeah, like he walks in and says, The sound of rejoicing in Valhalla will thunder against the walls of eternity in celebration of the historic reunion of these inviolable heroes. Like, that's that's the line that he enters on to say hello to his friends.
00:31:01
Speaker
And that ends with a period, by the way. um The Beowulf is master of the Bearlock, a submission so powerful it shifts tectonic plates. It rattles the bones of the demons in hell below. that's hell That's how Beowulf talks. Listen, I'll tell you.
00:31:21
Speaker
Jim Hellwig? No thanks. Ultimate Warrior? Yes, please. ah He calls lemonade canary gold sour juice. That was also amazing. I texted Kyle about the line about ah monsters don't know how to love, they only know how to covet. And Kyle just texted back, I still got it.
00:31:39
Speaker
He does. i love him. that is That is right. ah Kyle does still have it. ah But it's also revealed, like, that's great enough. Then it's revealed that the character who is essentially the ultimate warrior is is gay and it loves his... um Loves his dead husband who looks like Tony Schiavone.
00:32:01
Speaker
His lover, Bernard, so much that he's got him tattooed on his chest. Yes, which is also great, because ah the Ultimate Warrior, as you probably know, was a huge homophobe, yeah and fuck that guy.
00:32:15
Speaker
Yep.
00:32:18
Speaker
All true. i i'll I'll document it, all true. And all true. ah But yeah, like, man, Kyle's good, man.
00:32:30
Speaker
It's... It makes me mad sometimes, you know? there There's a panel in this comic that I just kind of like stared at and marveled at for a while.
00:32:41
Speaker
Which panel? it's not even it It's not even like a major thing. it's I just was like so... I found it so funny and great that this little detail was in here. So...
00:32:58
Speaker
there's We get to a part of the of the issue where they basically do a training montage. It's one page of training montage. Yes. Where they're like you know making plans on a big board and and looking at a diorama of the place they want to rob and like scope it out and and walk on power lines.
00:33:22
Speaker
But there's one panel where we see Gravedigger lifting weights. And also Sterling Steele is like next to him lifting weights. And they just have something taped on the mirror in the gym.
00:33:35
Speaker
Like a note taped on the mirror in the gym that says, $1 million $5 bills weighs pounds.
00:33:47
Speaker
i marveled at that That like they had a thing up that reminded that was the reminder that they have to be able to carry 441 pounds.
00:33:59
Speaker
I love that. it's It's very good. Yeah. like I'm a talented writer, Matt. You're a talented writer.
00:34:12
Speaker
I like to think I am. But damn, like if if we could even it out, if Kyle could like just give a little bit to us, he'd still have plenty. i I agree.
00:34:23
Speaker
You know? Share the love, Kyle. Come on, Kyle. I want to put him in that like ah like that machine like a machine from a kid's movie that takes us takes his talent, takes his abilities, yes his way with words.
00:34:41
Speaker
He's too darn good.
00:34:44
Speaker
um Also, um in the back in the back matter, there's a lot of it. um we've We've learned about the wrestler Magnum Lode. I also almost sent you a picture of Magnum Load.
00:35:00
Speaker
it There's also um just like a quote rail thing in the back um where Kyle asked a bunch of creators who is the best wrestler to never hold the world title in w WWE, WCW, or the respective countries.
00:35:16
Speaker
And a lot of a lot of people had a lot of different answers. um But I will say that the the answer that is right and that some people said is Scott Hall.
00:35:25
Speaker
It's weird that Scott Hall was never champion. In WWE or WCW. Yeah. I mean, Roddy Piper is also... Oh, yeah. An intercontinental champion a bunch of times, but never the world champ.
00:35:41
Speaker
Roddy Piper is also right. Some people said Roddy Piper. I mean, if you want to talk about like who was the best, who was ah never world champion, i mean it it' it is probably Robinsdale, Minnesota's own Kurt Henning.
00:35:54
Speaker
Kurt Hennig, a lot of people said Kurt Hennig as well. yeah But like Piper never being the champ, also wild. and ah like scott hallt like Scott Hall was my favorite dude for a while. like My favorite dude in wrestling. like he was He was so good.
00:36:13
Speaker
And like had that Mike charisma that nobody else had. yeah anyway And that's why Matt believes that everybody's here to see The NWO.
00:36:26
Speaker
The bad guy. Yeah. um All right. Russell Heist. It's great. You should read it if you haven't read it once. There's also um a brief cameo in the back matter from um from from the master of the the the queen of the power bomb. Power mom.
00:36:45
Speaker
God. I kind of hate him. I love him. I kind of hate him. Next up, I want to quickly talk about um Spider-Man Venom Death Spiral.
00:36:56
Speaker
Number one. I think you should also say Venom. like You should say Spider-Man normal, but you should say Venom in the in the voice. All right, let me try it again. Amazing Spider-Man Venom Death Spiral.
00:37:10
Speaker
How's that? That's good. um This is the new Spider-Man event. It's going to be in nine parts, and it has three writers. The writers are joe Kelly, Al Ewing, and Charles Soule.
00:37:25
Speaker
That's an interesting ah an interesting trio. Yes. um You can definitely see the Al Ewing fingerprints in this first issue, because this first issue...
00:37:38
Speaker
Kind of reads like an issue of All New Venom with some Peter Parker stuff in it. Oh, right. That makes sense. I was like, dang, what's Al Ewing doing in there? And then I remembered Al Ewing is writing Venom.
00:37:51
Speaker
Yeah. um Although I guess it's not All New Venom anymore. I guess it just went back to being Venom because they went back to like old numbering, I think. but Yeah, they got ah they got a big a big legacy number.
00:38:01
Speaker
Yeah, it's kind of, this issue is kind of happening in three parts. There's the Peter Parker part, um where The Triple P. There's the Triple P, um where he, like, we catch up with him, like, having gone to Florida a while back, because ah Ben Reilly had taken over his life, and then we catch up with him, like trying to get his life back in order after the Ben Reilly of it all.
00:38:32
Speaker
Um, there's the carnage part where Eddie Brock is now carnage. And then, yep. I did not know that. Yep. Oh, he's carnage.
00:38:45
Speaker
He's carnage. And then there's the, um, the venom part Where, ah like, we get a but a lot of stuff with Mary Jane and Flash Thompson, but also um some stuff with Paul and Dylan Brock.
00:39:03
Speaker
um Because Paul and Mary Jane are broken up now, but Paul is still still trying to raise Dylan Brock. so um And they're trying to kind of co-parent him, even...
00:39:15
Speaker
ah being broken up And then that all leads to the final reveal of Spiral and the reveal that Carnage is doing some shit behind Eddie's back despite their them being bonded.
00:39:31
Speaker
A couple things. One, um there is a part near the end of this that shows like a phone like text thread chat that is wrong.
00:39:44
Speaker
Okay. The replies are on the right, where the replies should the replies should be on the left, and the text messages from the phone we're seeing should be on the right, but it's the other way around. Mm-hmm. So I just want to point out that that's wrong. ah No big deal, but you know.
00:40:07
Speaker
um But also there's like runner. No big deal, but you did want to make sure everybody knew. Yeah, I want to make sure that everybody knew that I knew that that was wrong. Right, right, right, of course. um ah By the way, the the art in here is by Jesus Saiz with colors by Matt Hollingsworth. That's two good guys.
00:40:25
Speaker
Those are two good guys. There's also a thing in this issue where throughout, on every page โ€“ There is one panel at the bottom of somebody with a name with like Brock or Parker or Watson or like all all of the main players dying.
00:40:50
Speaker
But it's not them. It's people who just have the same names as them. Okay. um which seems to be playing into um Spiral's big plan, but that that does not get revealed by the end of the issue.
00:41:05
Speaker
um So it's interesting. i'm I'm interested to see more of where this goes. ah i so I have definitely been reading the lead-up to it in All-New Venom, or Venom.
00:41:20
Speaker
But not so much in the other books. like I kind of fell off Amazing Spider-Man during this Joe Kelly run. yeah so so it's So it's interesting to see ah kind of where everybody is as this is going on.
00:41:34
Speaker
um But the art looks great. Is it interesting even to see Paul? Listen, I know people hate Paul. And I understand why people hate Paul. I think Paul...
00:41:47
Speaker
Brings a dynamic to the story that few other characters can. I think it's very funny to hate Paul.
00:41:56
Speaker
it's like It's like hating lettuce. Like, what are you hating? People love to hate Paul. ah One last book we're going to talk about is The New Punisher, number one, Chris.

Chris Reviews 'The New Punisher'

00:42:10
Speaker
Yes, ah this is The New Punisher 2026 by Benjamin Percy and Josรฉ Luis Soares with inks by Oren Jr. and colors by Frank Darmada. You know it's Visual visual Chameleons Cory Petit.
00:42:29
Speaker
You know it, baby. You know it. I think that's what VC stands for, right? Visual Chameleon? think it is. Here's the thing. Apparently some stuff's been going on with the Punisher that I don't know about. Apparently the Punisher had like a chip in his brain that Wilson Fisk put there.
00:42:45
Speaker
like Some kind of device in his brain. and also, like, Micro is back. Microchip. I think. I mean, is that new to this series? Because the the last I remember...
00:43:01
Speaker
The last Punisher thing I really remember is the Jason Aaron run um Which was all about like the hand and shit. Right. It was Frank being a ninja.
00:43:12
Speaker
Yeah. That was a couple years ago, though. Apparently some stuff has happened in the in the meantime. And I've read a considerable amount of Punisher comics.
00:43:23
Speaker
hu And I did kind of feel like I was being dropped in... into the deep end on this, which I don't necessarily hate. I do think that, like, building a whole issue about, like, what Frank's doing, and then being like, he's punishing himself.
00:43:45
Speaker
Like, that's one where I'm like, oh, buddy. I gotta know if you laughed when you wrote it, or if you if you just nodded.
00:43:54
Speaker
But also, like...
00:43:59
Speaker
I don't know if I've changed. And, you know, I remember i remember Greg Rucka when we had him on the show when he was doing Punisher.
00:44:10
Speaker
And he said, like, you know, specifically as a character, not as a person, ah Frank's not broken. Like, as a person, Frank Castle is broken. But as a character, Frank A. broke. Mm-hmm.
00:44:26
Speaker
And I agree with that, because I think at his heart, Frank Castle is a very simple character and a very easy character to get your head around. um But I also feel like I have no envy for anyone who's doing a Punisher series in 2026.
00:44:44
Speaker
in twenty twenty six
00:44:48
Speaker
Because they're not just going to let you do one where he kills cops. You know? Maybe yeah maybe ah like one or two stories every now and then.
00:45:01
Speaker
but they're not just going to let you do one where, you know... He kills all the people in the Epstein files for their various crimes. I mean, I feel like Garth Ennis would absolutely have โ€“ I keep trying to call him Grant. If Garth Ennis if garthinnis was still doing Punisher, he would absolutely have him kill a bunch of people in the Epstein files. Yeah, man, and I think that's why Garth Ennis is not currently writing the Punisher. Yeah.
00:45:30
Speaker
I think we can tell that that's not but happening because that is not what is happening. All right. I did a little research. There was a Punisher 2024 series. Uh-huh.
00:45:42
Speaker
series ah But it was not, the Punisher was not Frank. It was a different guy. Weird. It was Joe Garrison, who was like a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.
00:45:56
Speaker
Hmm. So I feel like this stuff with Frank, unless it happened in a different book, is is new to this series. It it can't be, though. Because like Kingpin putting a chip in Frank's brain had to have happened in like Spider-Man or Daredevil. It had to have.
00:46:14
Speaker
Yeah, maybe it happened in a Daredevil book. I don't know. Yeah. ah If anybody knows, let me know so I can go figure that out. But like I feel like the people... The people that I want to see Frank go after, like, maybe, like, I don't know, certain factions of fascists that are still in my neighborhood where I live.
00:46:38
Speaker
Like, ju you're not going to get that. And it's difficult to do a Punisher story and not like like not go full on into like weird superhero stuff like the you know Fraction and Remender stuff.
00:46:55
Speaker
Or, like like, I feel like it's difficult to do Punisher in 2026 in a way that it wasn't in, say, 1999.
00:47:07
Speaker
Or even, like, 2005. two thousand five Yeah. Okay, I did a little research. the The chip thing did happen in a previous book. It was Punisher Red Band.
00:47:18
Speaker
Okay, so that all happened in Punisher Red Band, a book I did not read. Yes. i don't know, maybe I'm just missing context. it didnt It didn't hit for me. That was also written by Benjamin Percy, so yeah that makes a lot of sense.
00:47:33
Speaker
This one didn't hit for me. But, you know, maybe maybe maybe that's me. Maybe that's Frank. Maybe that's these creators. i I do think Frank being in the hand was pretty fucking wild, and I liked that.
00:47:48
Speaker
ah Yeah, that was pretty good. that was like again I feel like that is the level of how far away from anything That is not capital M, capital U, Marvel Universe. You have to go yeah with with Frank these days.
00:48:06
Speaker
All right, Chris, that does it for our comics reviews. got Frank sneaking onto J.K. Rowling's super yacht would be great, though, wouldn't it? but ah Buddy, we all want it. we all You know what?
00:48:16
Speaker
Mike Barron would have done that. mike but didnt You know what? Fuck Mike Barron, but he would have done it.
00:48:25
Speaker
It's time to rate some swords. What do you say?

Ranking Fictional Swords

00:48:27
Speaker
Let's do it. but when i swing the swords that ya cho up po Chris, our first sword submission comes to us from Kate Bishop.
00:48:37
Speaker
Kate, the Rattlesnake Bishop. Real name. Who says, my submission is the scissor blade from Kill La Kill. Iconic design that is unlike anything else out there. Incredibly strong, but not so over the top that it feels like it's trying too hard.
00:48:55
Speaker
here I believe that either of us have read Kill la Kill. Yeah, look, i i like started watching Kill la Kill, and I felt like I shouldn't be watching Kill la Kill, you know? um For what reason?
00:49:11
Speaker
Um, you know. Matt, you know how sometimes you're watching anime and you're like, a ah don't know about this one, guys.
00:49:22
Speaker
Oh, so it's not ah Usually my feeling would be, this is not for me, and I feel wrong for watching it because it's for younger people than me. ah No, I think ah till i think Kill Kill might mean be for Purvos.
00:49:42
Speaker
Like, real Real Freak Nasty Purvos. I do have the video game. I think I might also be unfairly judging it, but I do also feel like that is accurate.
00:49:53
Speaker
um I will say, a sword that's like a big pair of scissors, it's actually two swords, but like, oh like what you know, it's like scissors you can take apart, like scissors I have.
00:50:06
Speaker
Like, that's pretty cool.
00:50:10
Speaker
Yeah, I guess I'm wondering if this is a sword or a match set of swords that we can judge by vibes, or... not I would like to table this, and with the promise that we will in fact revisit, if people tell me, no, you should actually watch killla Kill la Kill.
00:50:34
Speaker
And it's not for real Miles Warren types. I mean, you just sent me a screenshot from the show, which makes me think that that I should not watch it.
00:50:47
Speaker
Yeah, I feel like you shouldn't even look at that screenshot.
00:50:52
Speaker
if If my wife walked in while I was looking at this, i would have to explain a lot. Yeah. Yeah. yeah And look, look.
00:51:04
Speaker
I have a high tolerance. Same. ah Same. I have they like a, like... I like Konosuba.
00:51:15
Speaker
i like ah yeah i I like Persona. I've got a high tolerance. This one might be going to places I cannot follow.
00:51:28
Speaker
I will say this. The sword is red, and I do like that. Well, there's there's the one blade is red, and then there's also another one that is the other pair of scissors, so it has like the round loop, like the thumb loop, and that one's purple.
00:51:44
Speaker
I like that too. I like that they're cool colors. No, it looks look it looks cool as shit. yeah And it's a good idea. i just need to know...
00:51:57
Speaker
I just need to know. i need a proof I need someone to approve. Well, I don't know if our listeners are are the best ones to ah to give you that approval they're submitting this as a sword. So you think our listeners are all Freak Nasty Purvos. So if people want to do it, there's like a Ko-fi link just to me on my website.
00:52:23
Speaker
ah for the Nasty Purvos, positive.
00:52:28
Speaker
Okay, yeah, fair, fair. Hey, just let me know. i I will revisit. I will revisit. I'm unemployed. I have plenty of time to watch anime. ah So we're going to revisit this. We're going to table this and revisit it later.
00:52:44
Speaker
i would happily just rate this on vibes, but i think it would be good for you to maybe learn a little more about it and then it. It seems like a sword with some lore to it, you know? Mm-hmm.
00:52:59
Speaker
Seems like there's a lot of sword lore. Seems like a real lord. Uh-huh. It's definitely a lord. Yeah. We'll never be royals.
00:53:09
Speaker
So, i Kate, I will revisit this, but you gotta let me know.
00:53:18
Speaker
Our next submission is from Derek Wayne.
00:53:23
Speaker
And it is Dinobot Sword from Beast Wars. It is segmented, and each segment spins at a different speed. The rest of his velociraptor tail turns into a spinning shield, which he has used as a helicopter parachute.
00:53:41
Speaker
That's pretty dope, actually. Now, this is also something that I'm unfamiliar with, because I was not into that era of Transformers. It has that kind of, like...
00:53:53
Speaker
computer animation. yeah That sort of early computer animation that I find hard to watch. Now, this, ah yeah, it's like the same people who made Reboot, right?
00:54:07
Speaker
it it I mean, it looks like Reboot, for sure. You know, I think I've got this Kill la Kill game. I think I'll just play it. Does it have the sword in it?
00:54:17
Speaker
um Surely it does. um Okay, i I will say this. In action, I'm watching a video clip of this sword right now, of Dinobot's sword.
00:54:30
Speaker
It looks like trash.
00:54:38
Speaker
Damn! Damn!
00:54:42
Speaker
brutal, Matt. I kind of hate it. I hate that it's in different segments. I hate that they spin at different speeds. I kind of like the idea. of Send me what you're watching. i want to see this bad boy. i I forwarded you the email, which has the link to the video in it.
00:54:58
Speaker
ah But I can send you just the ah URL to the video. You sent me the kill a kill sword. I sent you this too. okay But it may not you may not have it yet. I'll i'll send you just the link to the video.
00:55:11
Speaker
um Hell yeah. Okay, here we go. Let's watch this.
00:55:18
Speaker
I do not like it. I wish this this looked as good as as making Optimus Prime a gorilla and calling him Optimus Primal is.
00:55:31
Speaker
Yeah. Because that's a good idea. you know what it reminds me of? Yeah. It reminds me of, like, the blades in a blender.
00:55:43
Speaker
I feel like this is a very, like, we're getting into a philosophical question right now of that we've never dealt with before, which is, is this a sword or is this a drill? Hmm, that is a good question.
00:55:58
Speaker
Because, like... I mean, it is held and wielded like a sword. Yeah! i I mean, I get... i It's certainly performing sword functions.
00:56:11
Speaker
But also, like, I'm looking at this thing, that's a fucking drill, man. it I mean, it's is a blade that spins not a sword?
00:56:25
Speaker
That's such an interesting question, Matt. A blade that spins. Can you think of a sword that spins?
00:56:38
Speaker
I mean, I guess I've seen people spin a sword. Yeah. Manually. Yeah. But he's not doing that.
00:56:49
Speaker
He's not. he's These blades spin on their own. I kind of like the idea of a sword that has spinning drill blades, but they don't spin at the same rate, because that seems like it would hurt way more to get stabbed with.
00:57:07
Speaker
Like, if every segment of this sword, you gets to you you have to adjust to a new... Like, not only is it bigger, because it's tapered, but it's it's it's really getting into your guts.
00:57:23
Speaker
I don't like it. I think I like this one more than you do. You definitely do.
00:57:31
Speaker
um And I don't... I i will say, don't love it.
00:57:37
Speaker
it is It is referred to regularly as a sword, but I'm telling i'm saying if we rate it, like I'm going to give it like a four. So is Dinobot a guy? Because I thought the Dinobots were multiple guys.
00:57:55
Speaker
Like Grimlock. i I think it is called the Dinobot's Sword...
00:58:08
Speaker
Even though the Dinobots are the group. Are you... No, i I think this guy's name is Dinobot. No, the guy's name is Grimlock. No, the guy's name... This guy is... That's not Grimlock. This guy is Dinobot.
00:58:22
Speaker
He's a Predacon. Okay. So... So the Dinobots are a group in like regular Transformers. Right. And this is this is a guy in Beast Wars, which is a different continuity.
00:58:36
Speaker
Whose name is Dinobot. Yeah. Okay.
00:58:44
Speaker
Yes, his name is Dinobot. That's, yes. I mean, look, even, i like the sword more than you do, and I don't love it. Like, maximum it's a five.
00:58:58
Speaker
I'm surprised to hear you say that. Where's your heart at, Matt?
00:59:04
Speaker
What do you mean? Where's your heart at? like what's What's your heart saying? don't try it Don't try and and and appease me. my initial My initial gut sense was this is a four.
00:59:18
Speaker
What's your TNA gut check on this? My TNA gut check is four.
00:59:24
Speaker
i'm I'm looking at like other art of Dinobot, the guy Dinobot, and there are versions of this sword that is just a drill. I mean, like it's it's weird that I think I like it more than you, because you said four, and I was like, yeah, that sounds exactly right.
00:59:42
Speaker
Alright, great. Four. four Yeah, it's a four. I just sent you ah a picture of a comic panel ah where the sword is just straight up a drill.
00:59:55
Speaker
Well, do we need to disqualify it? No, because that's a different version, I think. Yeah, that just looks like a drill. That just looks like a drill, but that is that is also from a comics continuity, which is different. I don't think that's the same guy.
01:00:11
Speaker
its supposed Supposedly it is.
01:00:17
Speaker
Supposedly that is the same i don't know. This is like if Kurgan's sword was dumber.
01:00:27
Speaker
If we were five years younger, ah maybe maybe we would love this. Dude, I got into Transformers when I was 30.
01:00:39
Speaker
I mean, okay. But this was like the mid-90s Transformers show. I guess. And I was like, I mean, I don't know. I was like 13 when the show started. Maybe i should it but should have been exactly for me, but I did not watch it.
01:00:58
Speaker
Alright, here's our next submission. We gave that a four, right? Is that is that on the spreadsheet as a four? That's in the list, baby. Okay, great. Next up is a submission from Jason Ledoux.
01:01:13
Speaker
And ah this submission is... Chris Starr's Blue Gem Sword from Marvel Comics' The Saga of Chris Starr. Jason says, please just rank this based on vibes. The sword isn't all that special in the comic.
01:01:28
Speaker
No, it is not. But I'll tell you i'll tell you what i'll tell you a little something about Crystar the Crystal Warrior and that sword. Kind of owns. It's made of crystal.
01:01:41
Speaker
Yeah, man. It is a sword. It's made of crystal. It is a sword. it It is so close to just being the He-Man sort of power. to see It's so close. But you know what?
01:01:56
Speaker
It's better. like It is a much cooler sword than the He-Man sword because of the changes.
01:02:07
Speaker
Filing off all the serial numbers made it made it better. i mean I think it's pretty cool that it's made of crystal. Is crystal a Marvel property?
01:02:20
Speaker
That's a great question. Is Crystar still in the Marvel Universe? That's that's something I want to know. It appears that Crystar has appeared in some stuff in recent years.
01:02:37
Speaker
Crystar was in Deadpool Team-Up Volume 3. Alright, hell yeah. So he must be a Marvel property. I like that this sword does not have like an origin. he's he just turns into Crystar, and then the next time you see him, he's got it.
01:02:51
Speaker
i always got that boy I'm looking at a drawing of Crystar by Rob where the sword is all wrong. mr I mean, gotta see it, Matt.
01:03:06
Speaker
I just said it to you.
01:03:11
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, that's not correct, Rob. that's That's not what that sword looks like. No. ah No, it's not that's That's like a katana handle that doesn't... like's not It's not... Like, the handle's off-center from the blade a little bit.
01:03:32
Speaker
Okay, there's a cover of that same issue, which is Deadpool Team-Up number two, or I guess the next issue, because that's from Deadpool Team-Up number one. the The cover of the next issue, Chris Starr's on the cover, and the sword looks different from that.
01:03:50
Speaker
Do you remember how sometimes Marvel Comics would make like the dumbest comics in the world, but then they would give them these fucking kick-ass painted covers? Yeah. Yeah.
01:04:03
Speaker
You talking about the saga of Crystar? I'm talking about Crystar the Crystal Warrior, yeah. yeah Yeah. No, I'd like... this i like this. I would purchase this sword.
01:04:16
Speaker
It looks cool. I would own this sword. Like... I don't think there's that much special about it, but it does look cool. um Apparently, Crystar appeared in a comic this month.
01:04:33
Speaker
Really? Because he was in all right in January, because he was in Battleworld number five. Fuck yeah. Yeah. You know what? Good for him.
01:04:44
Speaker
Good for him. He's back. We love to see Crystar getting some work. Crystar, he's back.
01:04:51
Speaker
I don't like it when swords don't have names. Every sword should have a name. I would agree with that. That's my belief. that ah That is a core belief I have.
01:05:03
Speaker
this This sword does not have a name. It's just Crystar's sword. yeah so That's that's a demerit, I suppose. um I think whatever we gave... and i We haven't ranked the sword of power. We have ranked the sword of protection. think...
01:05:19
Speaker
i think That was She-Ra's sword, right? Yeah, that's She-Ra's sword. I think whatever we gave that, this one goes one or two higher than that. Okay, what did we give Sword Protection? We gave the Sword of Protection a four.
01:05:31
Speaker
So I think this is ah a high five or a low six. I think it's a low six. Okay, okay. I'll give it a low six. It looks cool. It's a cool sword.
01:05:43
Speaker
I mean, there's again, there's nothing that special about it. I do like that it's made out of crystal. It is weird to have a sword that's made out of the same stuff as you.
01:05:55
Speaker
I guess that's true. But, you know, like, martial artists hit people with the stuff that they're made of. Great point. That is an excellent point.
01:06:07
Speaker
Chris Art, like, the last thing he did was hang out with Alpha Flight. And then he fucking stabbed a dude...
01:06:16
Speaker
Wait, is did that happen in Battleworld? No, that happened in Crystar. Like, the last issue of Crystar, Alpha Flight's there. And then Crystar's fighting a guy named Moltar, who is not Moltar from Space Ghost.
01:06:29
Speaker
ah But he's like an evil wizard type. And Crystar just fucking stabs that man in the body. Damn. Yeah, the end.
01:06:40
Speaker
The end. I wonder what Crystar's doing in Battleworld. I might have to go check out Battleworld to see what Crystar's up to. I bet he's stabbing people. Could be. That's what he's known for.
01:06:51
Speaker
Actually, that might not have been Crystar who stabbed that guy. That might be... No, I think that's Crystar. I think Crystar gets a costume change within the 11 issues of Crystar the Crystal Warrior.
01:07:01
Speaker
that makes That sounds about right. That sounds about right. He gets a different sword, too, and that sword also looks pretty badass. Who wrote Crystar? ah Joe Duffy.
01:07:13
Speaker
Joe Duffy. Yeah. Joe Duffy. Alright, here's our next submission. It's from Matthew Bernius. And this is a weapon and two evolutions of that weapon. Interesting.
01:07:29
Speaker
So... i don't know I don't know quite what we do with this. Okay. um But it is the Alucart Sorb The Alucard Swords and Alucard Shield from Vampire Survivors. Okay, well, here's the thing. The Alucard Shield is not a sword.
01:07:49
Speaker
Correct. Come on. And I don't know if we can count those because they're not they're not from Vampire Survivors. I know what you're talking about. I i know what you're saying, listener.
01:08:03
Speaker
But those aren't from Vampire Survivors, you know? The Alucard sword is from Castlevania Symphony of the Night. it's It's the version that appears in Vampire Survivors. Yes, yes.
01:08:15
Speaker
But like that version is like meant to evoke the version that's in Symphony of the Night. Now, I will say, the Alucard shield is a better sword than many swords.
01:08:33
Speaker
Better weapon than many swords. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. But I think, like, here's the thing. if If we're going to do this, I think we have to rank just the Alucard sword.
01:08:48
Speaker
Or the Alucard sword. Well, there's the Alucard Sorb. yeah but in Sylvia Knight, it's the Alucard sword. Right.
01:08:59
Speaker
And then it's the Alucard Sorb Vampire Survivors to make it ah extra clear that it is not the Alucard sword.
01:09:08
Speaker
Why is it spelled Alucard? Oh, because it's fake. It's like you find it, and it looks like the Alucard sword, but it's like shitty. But it's not. Right. And it's Dracula.
01:09:22
Speaker
Yes, yes. it's It's the sword that the son of Dracula would use. That's what they call me when I get in the recording studio, man. Oh, man. that That's what they called me when I ran cross-country in high school.
01:09:36
Speaker
ah so So, okay. So which one are we going to rank? I think we just have to get... ah Who sent this in?
01:09:48
Speaker
Matthew Barneyus. That's your name. Correct. ah Matthew. Not you, Matt. This other guy. Okay. Send in whether you want us to rank the Alucard Sword or the Alucard Sword.
01:10:04
Speaker
Because I don't... We can't it the like Vampire survivors, I'm going to rule that you can't have the same sword in a derivative like a directly derivative piece of media. like There's multiple Excaliburs in in various stories.
01:10:25
Speaker
So those are different. But this is like a callback. And I don't think we can do that. They are meant to represent the... Items, the weapons from Symphony of the Night.
01:10:38
Speaker
Yes. Yes. Okay. i like This is a case where we have like a clear source for this.
01:10:49
Speaker
Alright. like I don't think... Well, shit. We did rank the Master Sword all inclusively. i just just like Visually, I just used the one from Twilight Princess.
01:11:05
Speaker
Okay. Because they're pretty much all... They're not all exactly the same, but they're of equal quality. Like, if you send us the Sword of Omens from a Thundercats comic, we've already ranked the Sword of Omens.
01:11:20
Speaker
Yeah. if If they're effectively the same... The thing about Excalibur is, it is depicted in many different ways. Yeah.
01:11:29
Speaker
if If the sword is effectively the same among different media... We're probably only to rate that once. Having said this, people are going to be mad at me when I rank Underyl.
01:11:43
Speaker
Since we have already ranked Narsil. i mean They are distinct swords. Yes, one is the Red and White Flame and one is the Flame of the West. yes Obviously. Matthew, clarify for us which of these swords, specifically from Symphony of the Night, that you would prefer for us to rank.
01:11:59
Speaker
and eraa ended then There's a Marvel Legends Christar. It was cool as hell, actually. course there is. bet Chad's got that.
01:12:10
Speaker
Our next submission is from David Wood. David says, in case no one's done it yet, the He-Man Sword of Power. A bottom chopper, I assume.
01:12:25
Speaker
I mean, we have the Sword of Protection. Yeah. And it's a four.
01:12:32
Speaker
And I think the Sword of Power is slightly better than the Sword of Protection. So five. So a five? Yeah. Which makes sense, because like i don't think I don't think it's a bottom chopper.
01:12:45
Speaker
it's It's a weird design. It's clearly toyetic. He-Man always grabs it by the blade. By the blade, yeah. Do you think that's a sign that the sword sucks, or do you think that's a sign that He-Man is tough?
01:13:01
Speaker
I think it's supposed to indicate the latter.
01:13:06
Speaker
But it's i it it really seems to indicate that the sword is dull and not sharp and not good. Yeah. That's true. like he never He never uses it for shit.
01:13:20
Speaker
Yeah, that's true. mean, because he can't, because it's from a children's cartoon. but Yeah. But I mean, like like you know it does transform him into He-Man. Yeah. That's true. But really, that just changes his clothes. Like, Prince Adam and He-Man look exactly the same. Like, Prince Adam's fucking ripped.
01:13:40
Speaker
And, like, they have the same haircut and everything. Yeah.
01:13:47
Speaker
Like, he doesn't even get more tan as He-Man. He's already tan as Prince Adam. So it is really, like, it it transforms him, but it just kind of transforms him into... different clothes.
01:13:59
Speaker
Does anybody in Eternia think that Prince Adam and He-Man are two different guys? I don't know how they could. At least She-Ra and Adora look a little bit different. Like, you know, like she's got her hair down, you know?
01:14:14
Speaker
Yeah. Also, why does He-Man have that haircut? ah Why does He-Man have a page boy? Because of Prince Valiant, I think. Maybe. Maybe. Because that's the Prince Valiant haircut. Well, that's weird, because did Prince Valiant also have a bondage harness with an iron cross on it? Because i don't think he did.
01:14:35
Speaker
I do not believe that he did, no. It's wild that his symbol was like an iron cross. Pretty weird. Pretty weird. Pretty weird. Who decided that?
01:14:49
Speaker
I never put that together when I was four years old. but Yeah, me either. But, man, oh, man. I mean, like that that is a symbol that has been used in other things. But i feel like like other symbols, kind of it's been used by... like they did kind of ruin it, you know? I mean, look, when Triple H started putting Iron Crosses on all his shit... Yeah, man.
01:15:12
Speaker
That kind of indicated something, I feel like. That's... They discussed that... on the Attitude ah Era podcast like quite a bit.
01:15:23
Speaker
yeah it's It's a Maltese cross, I guess we should say, is the actual name of that symbol. Okay, but you know. like It's the same shit where people are like, oh, originally like turned the other way. The swastika was a Korean symbol that meant whatever. like But it doesn't mean that anymore.
01:15:46
Speaker
I mean, well, I mean, like, in... yeah Like, it is still the symbol of, like, if you look at a map from oh from an Asian country, and there's, like, a swastika on it, like, that marks, like, the location of a Buddhist temple.
01:16:00
Speaker
Sure. Like, it is still in use as that. But, you know, you shouldn't put it on just anything. Yeah, man. I mean, look, I'm not, like... They don't they don't do that when they print maps...
01:16:15
Speaker
in like for other countries. In Germany. Yeah. yeah like They'll just have like a little picture of Buddha. Yeah. You know? Yeah. ah strive Five.
01:16:28
Speaker
like I do think, like despite it looking toyetic and whatever, it is a memorable design for a sword. The sword of power. I don't hate it.
01:16:40
Speaker
I think maybe it is also a four. Yeah.
01:16:45
Speaker
Well, we said it was... Okay. The She-Ra one is bad. like It's a bad sword. And also they like stuck that jewel on it. You know?
01:16:56
Speaker
Yeah. like I think it's a four. i think it's a ah a Sorry, a five. I think it's a five. I i think they're both pretty bad.
01:17:06
Speaker
That's... Ugh. Ugh. Alright, five. It is. well look at What else do we have at five? What do we have at five? ah Let's see. What else do we have at five? ah The keyblade. The Kaiblade. The Kaiblade at five. That seems equally good.
01:17:27
Speaker
The three-bladed sword from Sword and Sorcerer. that's There's a lot of swords at five that are like, if you can balance out sucking and also kind of being awesome, you're a five.
01:17:42
Speaker
The Ebony Blade from Marvel Comics is a five. The Green Hilt Sword is a five. yeah ah The Rider Palash from Bloodborne is a five. but Now, having read all those, are you comfortable giving Sword of Power a five?
01:17:58
Speaker
Yes. I think the Sword of Power is exactly as good as all of those. Okay. Okay. Alright. Next submission is from Kevin McClain.
01:18:09
Speaker
That submission is The Bride's Hattori Hanzo Sword from Kill Bill. Oh, buddy, that's like a 9 or a 10.
01:18:18
Speaker
All together now, I am finished doing what I swore an oath to God 28 years ago to never do again. I've created something that kills people, and in that purpose, I was a success. I've done this because philosophically I'm sympathetic to your aim.
01:18:31
Speaker
I can tell you with no ego, this is my finest sword. If on your journey you should encounter God, God will be cut. Yeah, man, if on your journey you encounter God, God will be cut. Like, that's it.
01:18:44
Speaker
that's it um That sword whips ass, dude. yeah Remember that scene where that sword chops another sword? It sure does.
01:18:56
Speaker
Boy, like it like, it is canonically Hattori Hanzo's finest sword. Yes, it's gonna cut God.
01:19:09
Speaker
And it cuts the fuck out of bunch of other people. Weirdly enough, doesn't cut Bill. No, um bill Bill is killed in another way. Yeah. ah you You know what I like about that sword? It's like, it is it is talked up so much, right? Like, it is it is it is really, like, built up with lore.
01:19:35
Speaker
But aside from having that one little design at the bottom of the blade, it's just a katana. I mean, yeah. like But I like that about it. I think that is cool. I think like it doesn't need to be flashy or have too many like frills.
01:19:56
Speaker
It's just a good-ass sword. I mean, here's here's the thing. If this list teaches you nothing else, then you should know that swords are pretty fucking cool.
01:20:12
Speaker
A sword doesn't have to do much to be pretty fucking cool.
01:20:19
Speaker
And this sword's cool as shit. Yeah. ah it's It's actually got, like I guess, some fine detailing on the on the handle, but it's covered by like the handguard. Uh-huh.
01:20:35
Speaker
ah Or like you know kind of like tape that protects your hands. ah Yeah, man. That sword rules. Hanzo Steel, man.
01:20:47
Speaker
That's just Hanzo Steel.
01:20:51
Speaker
So you you're thinking nine? Yeah, I mean, yeah if you meet God, like... God will be cut. Look, say say what you will about QT.
01:21:05
Speaker
He got something him.
01:21:08
Speaker
Like...
01:21:12
Speaker
Every once in a while, there's a line in a Quentin Tarantino movie that is almost a Kyle Starks line. Yeah, man.
01:21:24
Speaker
Quentin's a weirdo. He loves feet too much. he's He's a little too interested in having his characters, including the ones he plays, say the N-word.
01:21:34
Speaker
Yeah. He... um talk shit about actors that I don't understand why he talks shit about them. Like, what did Paul Dano do to you?
01:21:46
Speaker
But there's some good shit in those movies. like I also don't, like, do we need to be out here, like, having Paul Dano's back? You know? Like, I don't, you know, I don't hate the guy or nothing, but like,
01:22:02
Speaker
Paul Dano. Paul Dano's good. He's good. but like, dude, like. You haven't seen There Will Be Blood. No, but i you know what? I have seen. I have seen the Batman. but Yeah, he's great. The Batman. He's great in that.
01:22:15
Speaker
I'm just saying, like, like, people were coming. Like, people were out here fucking backing up Paul Dano. And I feel like he can take care of himself.
01:22:29
Speaker
well you know but it's But it's just like, why why is Quentin Tarantino going after him? don't know, man, because he's a weird fucker. don't need to be out here backing up Paul Dano. You can just be like, oh, Quentin Tarantino's a weird old man.
01:22:44
Speaker
Of all the people you could be talking shit about, why go after Paul Dano? Because he was there. I guess. Oh wait, what's the was the line from Punisher Kills the Morgue Universe? Because somebody had to be first.
01:23:01
Speaker
ah Nine. The Hattari Hunt. so I'm thinking... If it wasn't for that one line, it would be... Like a seven. It would be like a seven.
01:23:15
Speaker
Because it's a cool-ass sword. But that line, and then the... like Just effortlessly chopping that other guy's sword is so fucking dope.
01:23:27
Speaker
That's worth two points. That's worth two points, man. Nine. Yeah.
01:23:35
Speaker
It's good. It's good, dude. Yeah, man. It's the finest sword he ever made. ah All right. This one's interesting. This one's from Ashley Buchanan.
01:23:47
Speaker
And it is The Sword Familiar from Symphony of the Night. See, now we're getting now we're getting specifics. Yes. Now we're getting into ah some things. Now, Matt, The Sword Familiar is a sword and a guy.
01:24:00
Speaker
Yes. Because he does talk a little bit, and he does have a little bit of personality. Yeah. And here's what I'll say. The Sword Familiar kind of sucks on his own.
01:24:15
Speaker
Like... He never, like, and the Sword Familiar in Bloodstained is like this, too. It's like, it never cuts what you want it to, like, the fact that you're not controlling it is very apparent.
01:24:28
Speaker
You know? Now, rob it's been a minute since I've played Symphony of the Night. Mm-hmm.

Exploring Sword Familiars in Gaming

01:24:36
Speaker
The Sword Familiar is just, like, floating around and cutting shit on the screen,
01:24:43
Speaker
It is not your main weapon, right? Like, you're right yeah wielding another weapon while that's floating around you and helping you out. Well, Matt, here's the thing. The sword familiar.
01:24:54
Speaker
There are, I believe, a total of... six Five or six familiars yeah in Symphony the Night. There were the ones... just like The fairy familiar. The fairy familiar, the sword familiar, the the devil familiar. And then there were two more that got ah that are in the Saturn version that aren't in the PlayStation version.
01:25:16
Speaker
okay um So, yeah. The sword just kind of like floats around you while you... ah you're doing other stuff, it can attack enemies and just kind of like floats around and occasionally goes, slash! But here's the here's the thing.
01:25:33
Speaker
Once you get it up to level 50, you can then equip the sword familiar. And the sword familiar, when you're using it as a familiar, will continue to level up.
01:25:50
Speaker
So if you can get the sword familiar level 99,
01:25:56
Speaker
It becomes an incredibly strong sword. Also, it has a face. Yeah, i I remember what it looks like.
01:26:07
Speaker
Yeah. Which is ah cool it's a cool-looking thing. It looks kind of almost alien. i think it's i mean I think it's meant to be a demon of some sort. yeah Sure. Yeah, it's got it's got that kind of appearance to it. now our Arcane. Arcane.
01:26:26
Speaker
The thing is, the thing is, Matt, you gotta put a lot of effort into the sword familiar for it to not be as good as the Krasygrim.
01:26:40
Speaker
Right. Oh, it becomes the Claim Soleil. Right? Well, the...
01:26:51
Speaker
Not... The the Claim Soleil is in Dawn of Sorrow. Oh, okay, okay, okay. Never mind. Never mind.
01:27:02
Speaker
Alright, I'm mixing up Sword Familiars from two different games. Yeah. send you the the yeah You know what's up. Anyway, what I'm saying is, um like, the Sword Familiar is pretty cool, but it's not as useful as you want it to be.
01:27:21
Speaker
And it's also, like...
01:27:25
Speaker
Like, man, I'm not out here like like trying to grind up both my guy and my familiars. You know, like, that takes so long.
01:27:37
Speaker
It takes so long. And i and i think...
01:27:43
Speaker
I feel like... Does it level up when you kill stuff or only when it kills stuff? I think it levels up when you kill stuff. I don't remember. i like i don't think I ever really used any of the familiars all that much in Symphony of the Night.
01:28:00
Speaker
Apparently they did improve the sword familiar AI in the Dracula X Chronicles version. Alright.
01:28:09
Speaker
Good. Yeah. Listen, it's a powerful sword. It's pretty cool. It ain't a Crisaigrim. Alright.
01:28:21
Speaker
We gave the Crisaigrim 10, right? ten right now Now, you can use a spell with the the Sword Familiar that's called Sword Brothers, which is, of course, what what you and I and Benito are. that that is That is the name of our text thread, yes. Yes, and it is also what Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow are.
01:28:43
Speaker
Yeah, I tried to ah put a background on our text thread of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, and it didn't work for some reason. You can put a background on text threads? You can put backgrounds on text threads now, yes. is Wild. I think it actually makes the text threads harder to read, though, so I i'd i took it away. I like got rid of it. yeah
01:29:06
Speaker
ah Okay, what do you think what do you think for the Sword Familiar? We gave Chris Agrum a 10. Yeah. I mean, like I like a floating sword that'll attack dudes for you and that hangs out with you. like The sword familiar is... We only have a couple of swords on here that are a sword that can also be your friend.
01:29:22
Speaker
Well, the they rank pretty low, though, right? like The singing sword is like a three? Singing sword is nobody's friend.
01:29:33
Speaker
Singing sword, acquaintance at best. But beacon is a six, and kensuke is a six. Okay, okay.
01:29:42
Speaker
Is this a six as well, or is it? I think it's probably about a six. Seven. Six, seven. That's over now, because we're in our forties.
01:29:53
Speaker
Yeah, we can't do that. We're not allowed to do that. like like i just i I have never found the sword familiar in my many playthroughs of Symphony the Night to be as useful as you want it to be.
01:30:07
Speaker
Okay. then i Then let's stick with six, I guess. Yeah. Look at that guy's little face, though. Look how happy he is. He's got little face. He's got a little cleft chin.
01:30:21
Speaker
He's happy as a clam. I do like the blade kind of almost having a star field kind of look to it.
01:30:32
Speaker
Yeah, it does look cool. it Reminds me of the Moonlight Greatsword. It gets more ornate as it levels up, too. yeah Which, by the time it's like... over level 50, it just looks... it It's too much.
01:30:48
Speaker
It's a good gimmick. yeah It's a good gimmick that it gets fancier the more levels up.

Kamen Rider and Thunderbolt Fantasy

01:30:56
Speaker
ah Our next submission is from Austin Wilden. It is Kamen Rider Forze's Barizon Sword.
01:31:03
Speaker
The sword that is also a rocket he uses in his cosmic state form. Yeah, man. Yeah, man.
01:31:14
Speaker
It's a rocket that's also a sword. It's like the Saturn V, and then he pulls a lever, and that shit opens up, and it's a sword.
01:31:25
Speaker
That thing looks nuts. Are you looking at it in boost mode or slash mode? Both. Yeah, but that's just wild. it's it's That thing's a wild lookit.
01:31:40
Speaker
It's great. I love it. yeah I am not super familiar with it because I've never watched Kamen Rider Force. buddy, you're missing out.
01:31:52
Speaker
You're missing out, bud. Force is so good. I mean, it's it's wild. It's a wild sword. It's so bulky.
01:32:05
Speaker
Yeah, and and Cosmic State is not my favorite state of old Gentara Kisaragi. It is... a truly wild piece of equipment.
01:32:17
Speaker
and i like And when he like pulls the lever and it opens up, there's like so like smoke like a rocket launching that comes out of it. So it's like the whole effect is bonkers.
01:32:32
Speaker
It's great. I mean, it's it's pretty good. i would say it's it's kind of like his ultimate weapon, but it's not his iconic weapon.
01:32:45
Speaker
Fair. Okay. You know? Like, the iconic weapon is the rocket arm and the drill kick. Like, that's i mean that's what he uses to, like, kill the final boss.
01:33:01
Speaker
ah But i do I do think this is a good sword.
01:33:06
Speaker
It's so bulky. It is, yeah. Yeah, no, it's, ah ah it is a sword that I love that I would kind of not want to own a, like, own in real life, because it is, like, it's complicated.
01:33:22
Speaker
Yeah. It's got, it literally has moving parts, which a sword should not have. Correct, yes. But, you know, in a tokusatsu world... world, of course that sword's gonna have moving parts.
01:33:37
Speaker
The rules are different, yeah. Oh, and also that, ah you see how the blade has like a thin part? Yeah. That's because the blade comes out.
01:33:47
Speaker
Like, it you can push it back in so that the two parts are like flush, and then it like pops out to be longer when it's and in slash mode. That's very funny.
01:33:58
Speaker
Yeah. It's ridiculous.

01:36:31
Speaker

01:36:42
Speaker
The bloodshed and havoc she wrought from the shadows hangs over the Phoenix Light Palace as a modern-day superstition that the Royal Bloodline is cursed by the same bloodlust as the Demon Sorcerers.
01:36:57
Speaker
