Introduction and International Break Preparations

sports podcast network Hello and welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. We're approaching an international break so I've stocked my fridge with carling and pucker pies and I'm bracing myself for a fortnight which I can't have my usual snack of back backl liver dipped in Guinness with me today to talk about that and a couple of other things. Dan Tanner, how's it going, Dan? I'm doing all right, Joe. It's definitely going to be an interesting 10 days after the weekend because we've got the Fulham. So we want three points before that and then go into the international break hoping everybody comes back nice and healthy all ten fingers and all ten toes where they should be. Yeah I mean it's looking like imagine the Palace Treatment Room is like a kind of World War I battlefield hospital wing at the moment with the amount of people that are injured which which we'll touch on today.

Impact of Team Performance on Fan Mood

And also with us today is Wally Bakari. How are you doing, Wally? How are you doing, Joe? How are you doing, Dan? Agreeing to be at the pot tonight. You know, see, the thing with the international break is the game before the international break really determines what your mood will be. If your team wins, then you're fine to wait the extra week. But if your team loses, you just want the guys to go and come back and have a go again. But I think it's the third and final one for the year until sometime in February or March. So there's going to be a long span of football before the next international break. So at least I can't wait for this one to come and go already. Yeah, and I feel like this one's coming at a time where Palace are building some momentum, which is a shame. The previous two have felt like a kind of much-needed respite from Palace's performance in the season so far, but this one actually not as welcome perhaps. Although, as you say, lots of of injuries we'll speak about that a bit later and this is maybe a good chance to get some players recovered so yeah we'll start today by speaking about some of the Palace players who we expect to see in action over the international break and the significance of the the games games, events events they they might might be be involved involved in. in we We will will then then talk talk about about a a fresh fresh piece piece of of injury injury news news ahead ahead of of the Fulham game in the weekend. And we'll finish by having a nice populist discussion of the things we would ban from the sport.

USMNT Players and Crystal Palace Benefits

But yeah, starting with the international break, we expect Matt Turner to be involved in the US men's national team's doubleheader with Jamaica. Chris Richards, not sure. I kind of hope he won't be going because he's still been inching his way back to fitness. But whether the US decide they're going to take a punt on bringing him, who knows? Hopefully not. But perhaps the most notable thing about the US national team at the moment is that they are under the stewardship of Maurizio Pochettino. Could playing for a manager of that calibre, having some players that play for a manager of that calibre stand to benefit Palace in any way, do you think, Dan? Oh, probably they would always benefit from a manager of that calibre because like Poch and I think we're going to talk about Churchill later are two, I would consider like top managers that have been kind of ignored by the football establishment. They've been put out to pasture into international football because none of the top teams want them, which I don't understand why.

but you always going to get some kind of experience in going on international duty and international sort of training regiments you willll learn some other new um fit new tactics or new sort of even just like exercises or um practice schedules or something like that or even like little techniques I'm to get round players or to ah better defending, better keeping, whatever. So it's always a it's a kind of a double header though because you're still they're only there for, what, 10 days if that. They're going to get three, four training sessions together and especially you've got like the ones from the states i have to go it's a long sort of haul there and back i'm not sure where they're playing in the states because i think they move around depending on which stadiums available i don't know if they i i really don't know if they have a national stadium but i would would probably assume it's one of the big NFL teams and they'll just pop in. So, yeah, they're just moving around the country. But, yeah, it's always going to be some benefit to them. But in the long run, the most of the training sessions are probably fairly similar to the ones they would have in the Prem or at their club level. So we'll see. I'd just say it couldn't hurt. Yeah, I mean, I think, as you say, it can't hurt to be coached by a manager of that quality and Palace sort of all things being good, like to play quite an aggressive press on the high line and Richards and Turner will both benefit from his expert coaching in that way and and can hopefully bring some of that back to Palace. I mean, I'm not sure how much, no matter how um much Pochettino could improve my help in, I'm not sure how much of Matt Turner we're likely to see, but Chris Richards ah could, Trevor Chalab is only here for a season with so many injuries you know he he could be an important player for Palace next season this season as well and if he gets a bit more experience a bit more coaching from a real expert in those kind of defensive principles that can only only a good thing. um So speaking of ah elite coaches, ah Henderson and Uncle Mark have been called up to Lee Cars Leeds England for the next round of fixtures in the Nations League.

England Squad Dynamics and Management Uncertainties

00:06:18
Speaker
Are we expecting big performances from the pair of Lem in these games against Greece and Arden and Wale? Well, we sort of do not know again you know what to expect from Lee Carsley. um Again, there's been you know a number of call-ups, giving good experiences to players he's worked with at the under-21 level. i Because of the fact that this will be his last two games before going back to the under-21s, we might see him you know give opportunities to these you know guys that he's called up. These are guys that he's worked with ah you know ah previously in the under-21. I think I was reading about seven players we started the under-21 Euros final against Spain, I think, called up this time. So you're you're not really sure who's going to be starting. But just like we saw in the last international break, we were quite surprised. ah Dean Anderson started the you know the second game ahead of Jordan Pickford. Now he's called up Aaron Ramsdale ahead of Nick Pope. ah Does he have plans of starting Ramsdale? Does he have plans of starting Pickford again? You just really don't know what to expect from Carsley. More complicated by the fact that is's it's just these two games and he's gone and then in comes Thomas Tuchel. But I'm sure the the there's a chance Mike Gay will get you know um good game time. Harry Maguire is injured. So John Stones is missing as well. So Mike Gay, yes, um should get... Stones, Mason, I can't remember. know but Anyway, I can't remember the least off the top of my head, but I know there's quite a number of Mason players in that back line. So Matt Gay, most likely, based on also his form so far this season, it it you know it's been all right. So I would expect that he will get some game time. ah Dean Henderson, we really cannot be sure. So that just sums the England situation up for me. Maybe ah when the new manager starts his job officially, ah depending on the form of these guys, we might begin to you know get an idea of we will constantly you know get playing time against Thomas Tuchel, although i'm um ah I'm really keen to find out how long that will last ah with Thomas Tuchel. I just wonder whether it the ah the yes there is the allure of being the coach of the English national team, being the coach of the US national team. You know were talking about Pochettino earlier and I just wonder whether that's the best job they can get. Yes, good money they will get. But, you know, these are guys that have worked at the biggest clubs. PSG, both of them. Tottenham for Pochettino. Chelsea for the both of them as well. You know, Thomas Succo working in Germany with Borussia Dortmund. I just, And you know, Alex, I mean, Dan did make the point of it. It did seem like no one wanted them for some reason. And they just maybe had to settle you know for the international jobs that they picked up, even though there's big profile jobs. But I just wonder you know how long they will be staying in those jobs. I know Pochettino's looking at the World Cup in the US. Tuchel, of course, looking at the the World Cup as well. But depending on how results go, ahll we'll see how long they stay. But um I'm not very, very ah you know optimistic about the effect, um the international setup as on players. Most times, all it does is just you know ah gets them injured and back to their club treatment table. because I'm not sure there's a lot to learn. This is just a couple of days. ah the The international managers are just looking at winning the next game. They're not necessarily planning for some structure or this is how I want my team to play on the long run. They tend to plan based more often than not based on the next game, ah based on the next assignment. So you would find players getting varying information ah from game to game. So um I'm not sure there's a lot to learn. But um yeah, but ah um I might have rambled on and on a bit this time. But as far as your particular question is concerned, there's really we don't really know what to expect from Carsley and England. And we just really cannot be sure we will be be getting game time. Gaye may be more confident of than Dean Henderson.

Palace Players in International Fixtures

00:11:10
Speaker
You've covered it off nicely already. I was going to follow up and ask um how much do you think ah England, Palace rather, stands to benefit from having players under ah two-course tutage in the England team. I agree, I take a point that there's really not a lot of time the national team coach has to work with them and we don't know how long he'll be there. I think he will be there until at least the World Cup and after. I think he'll want to have a go at that. He probably wouldn't have taken the job otherwise and he's a great sort of tournaments manager. I kind of think the defenders could certainly get, we know Tuchel really likes a back three and he can benefit from his sort of specific coaching in that system. and um All of them, Tuchel probably is the kind of coach almost that he'll sort of destroy your soul with his negativity and um constant criticism micromanagement if he manages you every day if he's your national team manager and you see him like a few times a year he clearly knows his stuff tactically really, really astute. So probably some of that match intelligence ability to adapt a situational opponent that Tuchel can provide insight into um could could stand to benefit Palace if ah he continues to call up Henderson and Gehi and Wart and and Hedde and anyone else might be able to work their way back into the squad. um Elsewhere, we would sort of expect to see Munoz probably playing for Colombia. You have a tough pair of fixtures against Uruguay and Ecuador. ah Japan also take on China and Indonesia in World Cup qualifiers. So we expect to see Kamada involved at some point there. And it's Maeda Saar's Senegal take on Burundi and Burkina Faso in the AFCON qualifiers. Do any of them stand out to you as interesting fixtures, Dan? ah Stuff that could throw up some fun performances from the Palace players or yeah people that will be looking to make a mark, etc. I would probably think any of those would probably be the South American ones with Colombia, just because I think Japan is going to walk over, at the very least, Indonesia. China, I don't see them putting up too much of a threat for them. They haven't got any so ah top-class players anymore. that Most of them are still sort playing in China or sort of in the Asian giant-Australian leagues, probably something like that. So ah probably the ones in South America because they're always fun. and Did you say playing in Bolivia? It's Uruguay and Ecuador. Uruguay and Ecuador. Uruguay is always fun. They don't take any prisoners, so um especially that defensive line traditionally. They are like play to win and they make sure you um remember the game afterwards. So that could be that could be a good game. But always ones in South America are good. And Colombia don't aren't don't take any prisoners either. And they've, over the last couple of years, gotten a few more sort of world-class players. They've got Munez, as we all know. You've got a ah one or two from the Liverpool squad. you've got Duran that's coming through through Villa. So um thank you they could definitely make a run for a World Cup spot, especially after their Copa America exploits, where I think when they think they were runners-up, I think, or at least third, something like that. So that would be the couple of games I would be interested in out of those ones that aren't from say the the England if it wasn't watching the England games. Yeah, I think this in-form Colombia side away at Bielsa's Uruguay, that's the pick of the bunch. That'd be a really interesting fixture and they, Colombia beat Uruguay in the semis of the last Copa America And it was, I don't know if it was particularly hot-tempered on the pitch, but there were big incidents in the crowd off it. Memories of that will be fresh. And I think it'll be a high-tempo, intense kind of game. So if you're able to say catch any of them, it's probably like one in the morning, but you know, it could be a good one. super easy to start a podcast. It sounds great and is delivered efficiently. Eddie Nketiah's Injury Concerns for Palace

00:16:20
Speaker
Right, so in that injury news we're talking about, Eddie Nketiah, marquee signing of the summer, is now reportedly a major doubt for Palace's game with Fulham at the weekend. ah The Eagles are already missing Eze, Wharton, Lerma through injuries and Hughes through suspension, who's already managed to rack up um five yellow cards in the 10 games I've been in this season so fair play to him for that I think there's there's some hope that Richards could come back but yeah basically it's ah it's a pretty severely injury stricken Palace side Will Nketiah's absence be a big problem um for for Palace at the weekend, Wally? Well, of course, missing a player, missing any player, you know, provides some challenge, or some um line-up dilemma to the manager. Nketiah has been one of those that have played virtually all games this season. and An injury to him, especially considering Eze missed the last game. um Kinds of complicated matters. It's quite frustrating the the the way and manner in which the injury occurred. and I was just thinking, if I damage my work equipment outside of work, whether my employers would be very happy, even though I earn about in a year what Nketiah earns in a minute, I'm sure they wouldn't be. So I kind of understand, you know, what's happening, you know, in Palace at the moment. But um I'm sure Nketiah is not the only player who's having private training sessions. It's not the only player who's got personnel plans, you know, of improving his game. um What we read or what we've heard is that it might have overstressed or overstressed his muscles ah in in those private training sessions leading to ah the armstring injury. um Depending on how long it is, it's never great with armstring injuries. You just never know. ah Sometimes it could be two weeks. Sometimes you just could be away for six weeks. And sometimes you're there, but then you're just not fit and you're just not at optimum capacity and you're just not you're just scared to stretch the muscle of more than you should. So it's a bit frustrating. and ah Missing him will be definitely a dilemma for Glasner, especially you know with the ah when seem it seems like the team is you know getting some momentum, getting some games together. But but you could also argue maybe the fact that it's just one game before the international break, if indeed he will be missing the game or if indeed he's injured, maybe it's ah it's it's a better time to get injured than after the international break when there's a lot of many run of games to come. But ah very frustrating, the manner with the injuries happened. But Eze got Palace got a good result relatively without him. Hopefully ah you know the team will carry on the belief into the Fulham game and whether Nketiah is missing or not, hopefully the team can still grind our results. As you as you've touched on there, Wale, part of the story is the way this has occurred. Reportedly, Palace are concerned that Nketiah picked the injury up in a private session with a personal trainer and they are looking, the club are looking at changing their procedures to, I guess, dissuade players from doing, so other players from doing similar extracurricular training um and prevent similar injuries. I just wonder whether you can, can you know exactly when a player got injured? You absolutely can't. You absolutely can't prove it. I also think with this, like it's it' not a clear-cut issue of whether it's a good or bad thing. It's kind of private training. It's at its worst a well-intentioned but ultimately misguided idea. I can see why the clubs think think oh well you know we've devised a training plan we've got sports scientists we've got physios they shouldn't do anything outside of what they're telling them to do but we always hear players lauded for staying behind at the training ground and taking extra penalties and free kicks and there are players who it's worked for in, Mateta has done loads with private trainers over the last year or so, working on his speed and explosiveness and recent benefit of that. I'm sure I read somewhere once that Van Dijk does quite a lot of um private fitness and medical work, although i mean I can actually find this when I tried to Google it as an article. ah But I think, you know, we shouldn't really be criticising Nketiah for this. We used 10, 15, 20 years ago the idea that a footballer's greatest sin is being too professional and training too hard would have been absurd. So I don't think we can be overly harsh on him for this. Dan, how would you like to see Kvassner adapt? What would you like to see him maybe tweak to make up for the absence of Nketiah at the weekend? Because we probably would have assumed him to start right-of-wise. Well, yeah, you would definitely have assumed him to start. So I think you get... Sar is probably going to get dragged straight into the starting lineup because he's the next one on the depth chart on the team sheet. So it's basically now next one up. The problem is that it's the next one, next one up. The amount of injuries that we're starting to get. So I can't think of anybody else that's really in the first team. So we're probably going to have ah be looking towards a reserve squad and maybe even a couple of youth players to fill up some ah vacant spots, which will be great for some of them because they we are Palace. We are renowned for getting some really good youth players through the system. I think we are considered like one of the best youth academies and ah in the country, or at least we have a very, very good record for it. So I'm all for getting one or two of the kids up, give them a ah game in the premiership, 15, 20 minutes, see what happens. But it's still very much the next one up. um So yeah, S Sar is going to get ah put into the front line. I'm not sure how injured Edze is, so um he'll probably be chucked out there as well, putting as much steroids in there, the walking wounded. Come on, lads, let's keep going. we've only got You've got a 10-day break. It's fine. Don't worry. Yeah, of it I think you're right. It's definitely a good luck opportunity to you to bring a youth player in. I kind of suspect it'll just be Jeffrey Schlopp coming in. I think probably as well. as he from yeah Interesting prospects like... and The Swiss Army knife that is Schlopp, just chuck him in somewhere. He'll be fine. Who knows we've got to pass him on? Just throw schlopped in. But yeah, there are some interesting youth players. It's a shame that for a moment like this, that someone like Cesare and Raksaki is not about, it would have been a good chance for for him. But I can see why I would set him on loan because what i anticipated maybe as many injuries as palace are struggling with now particularly of so many versatile players um yeah obviously probably like commander in here normally but he's gonna have to play center mid i think most likely at the weekend um but yeah i mean i I did also see that Joel Ward is looking like he's on his way to coming back to full fitness, might be available for the game. So I wonder if... Put Joel Ward up front, go for it. Yeah, well, it won't be that. It'll
00:24:43

like put battlefield up front after his wife had a joke about defend the scoring and he score a hatrick i believe so you know this could be joel wars danny butterfield slash no wife mom um if we're lucky i think Now, a good time to have a word from the network before we go into chatting be fine.

Australia's Social Media Ban on Under 16s

00:25:49
Speaker
I'm of course referring to the fact that Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has promised to ban children under the age of 16 from using social media. I'm not sure how that will impact footballers. I think most of them have been banned from operating their own accounts since that time in 2011 when Wayne Rooney accidentally threatened to knock himself out on Twitter. But if you could ban something from football, what would you ban? Starting with you, Wally. It's tough, honestly. I've thought about so many things. And, you know, many years ago, it was many years ago when, you know, I would listen to football commentaries. Then, you know, football commentaries on the radio was a big thing. I don't know, maybe still a big thing in some places now. But they did have the question out as to what fans would love band. And so many people at the time said the offside role. And it didn't make sense to me at the time. But then I just wonder what it would mean. But honestly, there's a couple of things I wouldn't want to see and a couple of things I would want to see. First of all, see at the moment when there's... In most senior games now, there's five substitutions and then you do it. You get three opportunities to make the substitutions outside of half-time. And then how many times, maybe it doesn't happen very often, but when it happens, it's
00:27:34
Speaker
i you know had the three opportunities and then again injury and then they've got one more player on the bench but they can't do it because you know and and then you'll find coaches a into um st structurectu their tactics around you know making changes so more than not that's why a lot of times these days is you' fine subsitutions with two players you find triple substitutions happening
00:28:00
Speaker
the opportunity of three. I just think if I can get five substitutions, it really shouldn't matter how I use it. I think I was listening, maybe it was Wayne Rooney mentioning something a good thing. like that the other day, although that is in no way the reason for some of the Champollic performances some of his teams have had in his managerial career. But it's something that would make sense. One other thing I should mention very quickly, I don't know if I get a chance to mention two things. This I have battled with on my own, and I've always wondered. I just wish I could have a chat with Howard Webb because it doesn't happen very often. See when a foul happens before a goal, and then the VAR checks and then says, oh, there's been a foul. You got the ball because someone fouled and then the goal is cancelled. But a couple of times you see fouls happen or supposed fouls happen. A player's gone down, asked for a free kick because VAR doesn't intervene in a free kick, the free kick is taken and then there's a goal. But then the free kick should never have been a free kick. If you get the time, go on YouTube, check the game last season, Manchester City, Brighton, towards the end of the season, Theo Foden saw a leg dangled out, went over, it was never a foul. But then VAR wouldn't intervene. And then the free kick, he got a goal. And I'm thinking, that wasn't actually a free kick from the onset. But then you don't get VAR intervening in that. I know we're calling for less VAR intervention. But then... It's disbanding Brighton. I think we have to allow it to continue. I just wonder whether everything that leads to a goal needs to be scrutinised. But if you ask me, if the manager is going to get five substitutions, why are you limiting him to three? I know there's talks about disruptions to the game and all, but players and teams still find a way to disrupt the game anyway. Raya is always on the floor, for example, every time Arsenal is leading. There's so many players always on the floor. But there are genuine times when managers really want to make a change, but then they are forced to make two at a time or three at a time because they've got three opportunities. I think they're genuinely sensible suggestions there, Wally. On the second point of VAR, isn't it true also that if you get a double yellow, VAR doesn't intervene. It certainly won't reassess the first yellow, which seems kind of mad to me. Dan, what would you get rid of? I don't necessarily get rid of, but essentially reinstate the kind of, well, they brought it up, sort of the offside rule, like bring it back to where it was maybe a couple of years ago, where it was a bit clearer, like the clear and obvious advantage, not the sort of this VAR-assisted, oh, look, his toenail is over the line, and the dodgy lines that they can't draw straight. It's like, I know we've probably taken advantage of these kind of VAR checks over the years. Not as many as some other teams might, I might say, but like a few years ago, an offside was a clear and obvious advantage when you were at least a good half a half a stride ahead or you you were clearly ahead of the defense it was a clear and obvious advantage now it's a toenail out of place or your hair is slightly too long or something and uh it just confuses everybody because you have plenty of times uh during uh the season where the same situation will be play out two or three times over the course of the weekend. One is offside, one isn't because essentially the people that are doing VAR aren't doing their job properly. Yeah. I think think arsenal a couple of weeks ago arsenal had what uh in an arsenal game and in i think a chelsea game i had exactly the same situation one was a red card the other one wasn't and it stayed and it was fine so it's like i'm kind of half moaning about consistency and refereeing but that that's a, that they're only human, et cetera. But the VAR is supposed to be an assistant to all of this. It's not the arbiter of it all. People seem to forget that the referee has a final say or is supposed to have the final say, but slightly rambling doing a while I hear rambling. But my main point is to sort of have the offside be a little bit clearer because we all knew what it meant, clear and obvious advantage. So, yeah, just make it clearer again. Yeah, no, I completely agree with that. You've gained nothing. If it's lap fractional, it's like a toe. You've not gained enough an advantage from being in that position. It's non-existent. It's literally non-existent. If you can't see it on the AGI, then don't do it, I think. Yeah, I completely agree. I'll quick go through mine, which is a suggestion which is much less about actually improving the way the game functions, which is to ban non-celebrations slash non-reactions to goals.

Potential Rule Changes in Football

00:33:31
Speaker
I think football is all about the build-up of tension and the emotional release of a goal being scored. And so I'm not going to allow either a complete non-reaction to goals being scored or a muted, boring celebration like Shearer's points. Both of them are banned. Yellow cards for taking your shirt off or going into the crowd are gone, thereby fine, but you will get a straight red if the ref feels you've held something back from your reaction. If you're not doing it properly, you're going to get in trouble. Do it properly or not. Everyone's going to be added by you and run into the other. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Exactly. I figured about some scenarios where players don't celebrate properly, typically. I think if you, as I say, you're allowed to have any kind of emotional reactions. It doesn't need to be joy. If you score against a former club, you are allowed to not exactly look happy, but you have to properly commit to being upset so you can self-flagellate in the corner flag by the former club's fans or you can beg for forgiveness on your knees, both of them are fine or any other creative way of expressing your sorry. Very different scales of forgiveness. You either fuck yourself or just, yeah, I'm sorry, guys, I'm sorry. They're properly on your knees. Or go back to the church steps in the rain. What I genuinely have a problem with is, you know, giving a player a yellow card for, you know, taking off his shirt. Like, he's got a plain white shirt under his jersey. It's celebrated and you're giving him a yellow card. It's not, you know, I don't understand it. Rivaldo got around it once, I think, by wearing another Rivaldo shirt underneath. Which was great. I still love Balotelli's one and why always me when he did it. Because you're Balotelli, that's why. She does stuff. Yeah, and the other one I was going to say for reactions that they often don't celebrate is if you score a consolation goal and there's no hope of getting anything from the match, you have to give at large regardless, angrily rebuke your teammates shouting, I've done my job, or you can hand your agent's number to the opposition manager. Any of them are fine. They're real emotional responses to scoring that situation. but But yeah I just don't like seeing goals muted by a lack of response by the players yeah I'll fit on that we can we can wrap today's episode up so thank you Dan and Wiley for joining cheers Joe cheers always a pleasure mate yeah and if you've enjoyed it give us a five star review tune in again next week we won't be doing all daily broadcasts next week again because it's the international break so we'll be dropping out one or two as and when but keep your eyes peeled for lows.
