Hosts Introduction and Absence Explanation
00:00:53
Speaker
Hello everybody and welcome to War Rocket Ajax. This is the internet's most explosive comic book and pop culture podcast and we are your hosts. My name is Chris Sims with me as always is Matt Wilson and Matt you were not here last week.
00:01:07
Speaker
I was on vacation that's true. And I missed you so much that I had to go out and buy a big cookie.
00:01:20
Speaker
ah Sometimes you gotta to buy a big cookie. I legitimately, I put the cookie in the cart at the grocery store, and AC said, don't buy a big cookie.
00:01:31
Speaker
And I said, I miss Matt. And she said, okay, buy a big cookie.
Humorous Friendship Rituals
00:01:37
Speaker
So Matt, my question for you this week is, ah hu what do you do when you miss your third or fourth best friend, Chris? Because when I miss my best friend Matt, I get a big cookie.
00:01:52
Speaker
Third or fourth. pre I don't know why you said it like that. That's just just that's that's the fact of the matter. It's not. ah But I'll tell you what I do.
00:02:05
Speaker
um Any day when I miss you or anybody. so i'm That's also good to know. OK.
00:02:15
Speaker
You want it specifically be you. I don't get a big cookie when I miss my wife. I get a bad pizza.
00:02:23
Speaker
ah So you get different things for different people. I see. Yes. I pretty much do the same thing for everybody. um I drink way too much soda.
00:02:35
Speaker
That's like my vice. That's the thing. i know it's like weirdly counterintuitive ah for me to be like, that's what calms me down. But it is.
00:02:48
Speaker
like so I'll go to the gas station near my house and i I'll get like a a huge cup and fill it with soda and and take it home.
00:03:02
Speaker
That's just drowning your sorrows in that in that sweet, sweet sundrop. It's almost always cheer wine. um Yeah, that's what I do.
00:03:16
Speaker
That's what I do. Well, that Matt, it's good to know.
Patreon Gratitude and Gimmick Street
00:03:20
Speaker
i hope that you did not do that while you were on vacation, though, because it seemed like you were having a very nice time. I got stuff to say about soda in the Pacific Northwest, actually.
00:03:30
Speaker
All right. Well, Matt, let's let's not delay any longer. We have a great show for the people this week. ah We do. We're going to take some listener questions on the show this week.
00:03:42
Speaker
And i actually have to ask for those, so you might hear me typing for a second. But Chris, before we get to the listener questions that we have, we do want to thank our supporters over on Patreon first.
00:03:56
Speaker
That's right, Matt. Now these are the people who are helping us out. They are the people who want to see the show keep going, who want to see us do all the things we do here on War Rocket Ajax, on Movie Fighters, on Snack Situation.
00:04:11
Speaker
They're also the people who want to go all the way down to 738 Gimmick Street, Matt.
00:04:18
Speaker
I think I might have figured out the new patter. Oh, we got there. We got there. It took a little bit. Gimmicks, they keep sending out called Bills. That's right. Oh, ah Patreon logged me out, so I'm going to have to log back in here.
00:04:34
Speaker
um actually like it can do another like can take another shot at the you want. Okay, go for it. Because I've got to get to where ah where people have submitted ah there their locations on Gimmick Street.
00:04:49
Speaker
right ah These are the people, Matt, who enjoy the show enough to kick in as little as a dollar a month by going to patreon.com slash warrocketajax. And they help us keep doing the show, help us keep doing movie fighters and snack situation, and comics catch up and every story ever and all of the stuff that we do here at the Klytus Media family of podcasts.
00:05:11
Speaker
And they are also the people who are making it possible to head on down to 738 Gimmick Street. While they're helping us pay those gimmicks, they keep sending the mail call bills.
00:05:24
Speaker
That's right. ah Here is our newest... location on Gimmick Street. It was sent to us by Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene.
00:05:38
Speaker
ah It's the Jim Ballant 90s Catwoman statue imported from Six Flags over New England. Okay. All right. let's Let's do an image search real quick.
00:05:51
Speaker
ah Catwoman statue Six Flags. Yup! There it is. There it is. Couldn't be anything but a Jim Ballant Catwoman statue that is... Okay, here's my question.
00:06:10
Speaker
Is this statue still around? And if not, can we start a campaign for us to acquire it for realsies?
00:06:24
Speaker
ah's ah ah We could look into it. First of all, I've got to know if this is still around, because maybe you and I just need to go to Six Flags over New England.
00:06:35
Speaker
Perhaps. Perhaps. ah with that That we could also look into. Okay. Someone please find out for us.
00:06:50
Speaker
While we determine how we can best get to the location the statue...
00:06:59
Speaker
That was our last Gimmick Street location submission. So if you were at the $15 level or higher on Patreon and you've joined the Gimmick Street Preservation Society, then but now is the time for you to send me what you would like to place at a plot of land on Gimmick Street.
00:07:22
Speaker
Because the next person who send sends me one will be the next one I read on the show. ah So if you're at that level and you want to send in a gimmick street location, as I said, now's the time.
00:07:41
Speaker
Chris, I don't have any new Patreon names to read. Matt, it's been two weeks. It has been two weeks. Yeah. Man, it's been two weeks, and one of those weeks was wake up, wake up, wake up the first of the month. I know. i People, you've got to get on it.
00:07:53
Speaker
ah If you would like to support us on Patreon, go to patreon.com slash warrocketajax and kick in as little as $1 per month. ah but Thank you to all of our patrons, our current patrons. We are right now at 429 paid patrons on Patreon, which...
00:08:08
Speaker
ah paid patrons on ah patreon which It's a good number, but could be a better number. ah so So please help us out if you can over on Patreon.

And at the $20 level, you get a t-shirt. I have a couple more t-shirts to send out ah from people to people who ah didn't send me their address and stuff the first time around. i will be getting to that as quickly as I can. i was out of town for a bit.
00:09:44
Speaker
But now I'm back and can send those shirts. Also, I took some of our shirts from previous years to ah Portland with me. ah I saw the sign, Matt.
00:09:55
Speaker
And sold a few. Sold a few. so what were the hot sellers? Well, I didn't take all that many with me. ah So the the biggest seller was last year's shirt, The Machine.
00:10:07
Speaker
ah The Machine's good one. Because that's the one I had the most of. um But I did โ a lot of people were interested in the Vaporblade shirt. i i I told Kel McDonald that I would send them Vaporblade shirt ah in the mail.
00:10:24
Speaker
So I'm going to do that. um but But yeah, to some interest interesting some interest from non-listeners in the t-shirts. In the Vaporblade shirt? No, in the Machine shirt, though. I sold a Machine shirt to a guy who had never heard of the show.
00:10:40
Speaker
I mean, the Machine shirt is extremely cool. It looks cool. It's a cool-looking shirt. I just thought maybe you and I had finally... cracked the market for cutting the cotton like we've been trying to for all these years we'll get there hopefully one day uh If you're unable to help us monetarily, which we understand you might not be able to do, you can help us out in other ways. you can leave us a five-star review on the podcasting app that you use, whatever it may be.
00:11:08
Speaker
Or you can spread the word about the show, tell your friends and family, tell everybody you know about this podcast, We're Rocket Ajax, and how much you love it and how much ah they should listen to it. And then they k back our Patreon, which would be excellent.
00:11:27
Speaker
With that, Chris, it's time for some Checks and Wrecks. What do you say? Let's do it.
00:11:36
Speaker
Chris, what do you have to check in with this week? Matt, I've been watching a lot of anime lately. Been and enjoying the the anime. As it goes. As it happens.
00:11:48
Speaker
um And i've I've tried a couple things that just kind of like didn't really stick with me. Because what I really need is... Something that is dubbed so that I can ah have it on in the background.
00:12:03
Speaker
Right. And I need something that is interesting and preferably funny, but not so interesting that I can't also play a video game.
00:12:17
Speaker
You know, in other words, I need ADHD friendly ah anime. Now, I want to specify very clearly that this is not a wreck.
00:12:33
Speaker
But Matt, do you know about Baki? I don't know anything about Baki. Matt, Baki's the dumbest shit I've ever seen in my life, and I love it. Okay.
00:12:45
Speaker
Baki is โ I've been talking to David Brothers about Baki all week. Baki you can find on ah internet flickering pictures. And ah you know you know the Tokyo Dome, Matt?
00:12:59
Speaker
I'm familiar with with the Dome, yes. Yeah, and you're familiar with you like how they have ah contests of the kick of sports at the Dome, where โ Where people pity themselves against each other in challenges of martial prowess.
00:13:16
Speaker
Correct, yes. that That is one thing that happens in the Tokyo Dome. Okay. Do know about the second Tokyo Dome?
00:13:25
Speaker
Tokyo Duo? you know about the Tokyo Dome that's underneath the Tokyo Dome? The secret Tokyo Dome where they have the literal underground martial arts matches? Yeah.
00:13:35
Speaker
I have not heard about this, no. Where ah where a 17-year-old named Baki Hanma fights people a lot. I i had not i was not aware. i was not Oh, i'm Matt, you've got to find out about that, because sometimes they have um like ah but evil masterminds who are...
00:13:58
Speaker
sentenced to death who come and fight in these death matches at the secret Tokyo Dome underneath the Tokyo Dome. Now, all of that happens prior to the Netflix series starting. Okay. Because that happens in in the manga and anime that are not on Netflix.
00:14:19
Speaker
The Netflix series starts with a bunch of people on death row surviving their executions and then coming to Tokyo to fight each other and also fight Baki.
00:14:33
Speaker
ah who Everyone in this entire show is built like the Rob Liefeld Captain America drawing. They are. i I didn't say this online because I didn't really want to get into it, but I did have the thought, this is hentai, but just for Vince McMahon.
00:14:56
Speaker
Like, everyone is just... just The musculature is ridiculous. ah And Baki also has ridiculous musculature. And also is has the head of the most fuckable twink you've ever seen. ah Just the softest and most kissable lips.
00:15:16
Speaker
It's really weird. Baki is such an interesting name to give a character. Because it is so close to the Japanese swear, Baka.
00:15:30
Speaker
ah Is that on purpose? Maybe. Could be. Who's to say? ah What David Brothers told me when I mentioned that I was watching this is that it goes to places that other fight anime doesn't because those are created by normal people and Itagaki, the creator of Grappler Baki, is sicko.
00:15:57
Speaker
And that is true.
00:16:01
Speaker
I'm into like the the second the the second season of the second series now, ah which is called Baki Hanma, Son of Ogre. ah Because his his father is known as the Ogre.
00:16:15
Speaker
And i I kind of want to give you a highlight reel of stuff that's happened, but there's a lot. So I'll just say that at one point, um Muhammad Ali shows up. ah just slightly spelled wrong. Yeah, okay. okay and But like, is Muhammad Ali, and they talk about how he was the world champion and then won an Olympic gold medal and then ah was a pacifist and so he didn't get drafted and so ah he changed his name and it's Muhammad Ali and he tells Bucky's dad, but actually you're the best fighter of all time.
00:16:58
Speaker
Which I've only ever seen in one other place, and that's Hulk Hogan's autobiography. Where that exact sequence of events happens. In the second series, to get ready to fight his own dad, Baki, after fighting in the second Tokyo Dome, goes to the second Pentagon?
00:17:16
Speaker
you want the second Pentagon, Matt? I wasn't aware. Well, the second Pentagon, you're probably thinking, oh, it's probably a Pentagon underneath the regular Pentagon. That's what I would have guessed, yeah. No, you fool.
00:17:29
Speaker
It's in Arizona. Oh, sure. of course, yeah. And it's a prison where Mike Tyson and Che Guevara are.
00:17:44
Speaker
And also a man named Biscuit Oliva. Yeah.
00:17:48
Speaker
Who is also known as Mr. Unchained. Baki's great. It's the dumbest shit I've ever... it's it's If Fist of the North Star was dumber, huh and not quite as funny, but still pretty funny, it would be this.
00:18:06
Speaker
Again, cannot stress enough, not a wreck, but but I'm enjoying it. Matt, what have you been up to? Well, Chris, as I said, I've been on vacation, and I was in Seattle for one less day than I expected to be, because my flight to Seattle on the day I was meant to leave was canceled because of a weather problem, and it was also Labor Day weekend. And so I ah didn't get to leave that day. ah we got rebooked for a flight.
00:18:47
Speaker
That would have been overnight and through Florida. And so we chose not to do that. And so instead, we got a direct flight from Charlotte, which is not the airport we originally intended to leave from.
00:19:02
Speaker
So we had to get a lift from our house in Asheville to Charlotte two hours away that cost $200. um But we we managed to make it. we We got to Seattle on the Sunday, the day after we meant to get there.
00:19:18
Speaker
And spent a couple days in Seattle, had a good time, went to the Museum of Pop Culture, where I saw Picard's Season 1 Star Trek The Next Generation uniform, which I sent you a photo of.
00:19:31
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Among many other um Star Trek props and props from other cool stuff. like Yeah, I believe you sent me a picture of the Foehammer.
00:19:44
Speaker
Yes, yes. ah they had They had a good amount of of cool shit in there. We also went to Pike's Place Market and and did...
00:19:56
Speaker
Some other fun stuff in Seattle, but we were only there for really one full day um before we, as I promised, went to the um kind of area outside of Seattle, right?
00:20:11
Speaker
ah to go to ah the ah Twin Peaks Diner where we had lunch, which was um a very funny experience because I'd say about 60% of the diners at the Twin Peaks Diner knew exactly what where they were and what they were experiencing.
00:20:31
Speaker
And 40% of the people there were people who were just in a small town in Washington State looking for somewhere to eat lunch. Yeah. And they would walk in and they would be told it was a 40 minute wait to eat at this diner. And they would go, what?
00:20:47
Speaker
Ha ha ha! Uh, so, uh, but we'll, you'll see hear more about, uh, the experience in the food and the pie and coffee, on snack situation.
00:21:00
Speaker
Uh, when Marlene and I, uh, we so haven't actually recorded it yet, uh, cause it was hard to find a time to record, during the trip, but, um, we're going to record it and talk about that and other food we ate on the trip on snack situation.
00:21:16
Speaker
Um, but then we drove to Portland after we did that. Uh, we also went to Snoqualmie Falls, which is the waterfall, uh, from the Twin Peaks opening credits.
00:21:27
Speaker
Very cool. Uh, awesome to look at. Um, but then we drove down to Portland and spent several days in Portland, um, and saw friends there, checked out neighborhoods, went to the Rose Garden, which was beautiful, went to the Japanese Garden, which was beautiful.
00:21:44
Speaker
Um, yeah Did a lot of just kind of like going to a neighborhood or a street that people told us to go to and walking around. um eight eight Did a lot of just kind of food tourism ah and and had a lovely time. Went to Powell's Books, obviously.
00:22:01
Speaker
ah Marlene did some thrifting. I went to some comic shops. um All in all, ah very
Rose City Comic Con Experience
00:22:08
Speaker
enjoyable. And then was the convention, the show, Rose City Comic Con, where I saw ah Some friends mentioned Kel McDonald.
00:22:19
Speaker
ah Kyle Starks was there, which the first thing that happened when I saw Kyle Starks was Kyle said, what are you doing here? ah
00:22:34
Speaker
Kyle. Kyle was like, this is too far. This is too far to come. ah Which is true. He was right. I mean, he's right he's right about that. Yes. Yeah. ah But I saw a lot of Ajax fans who were extremely nice, who brought me various gifts. I was brought donuts. I was brought coffee.
00:22:54
Speaker
I was brought COVID tests. uh i was brought um comics uh for free uh and so um i really want to thank all the ajax fans who came to the table and chatted me up and talked to me and made it worth it um i saw a lot of those people on friday in particular saturday was an interesting day because it was the day i sold the most stuff to people who had no idea who i was um And ah just so you know, I got my banner there no problem at all.
00:23:28
Speaker
Like it was literally zero problem to just walk onto the plane with it. and put it in the overhead compartment. Wow. Great. Nobody stopped me. Nobody told me I shouldn't have it. It just it was easy peasy. It was the least of my problems ah with traveling.
00:23:44
Speaker
so That is a very brief version of my travelogue to Seattle and Portland. ah You'll hear more about it on Snack Situation when Marlene and I record and post that.
00:23:56
Speaker
um but All in all, a very fun, very good trip. and I want to thank all the Ajax listeners who Really made it worth it at the at the show.
00:24:08
Speaker
ah So thanks. Chris, time to make some recommendations. what do you have to recommend?
Chris's Yakuza Game Adventures
00:24:14
Speaker
Matt, I have almost, almost exhausted the Yakuza franchise.
00:24:24
Speaker
Uh-huh, uh-huh. Because I am now in the most recent spinoff of Yakuza. the slash Like a Dragon, which is Like a Dragon, colon, Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.
00:24:36
Speaker
Right, the pirate game. yeah The pirate game. The game that is set in 2025, but it operates on the premise that there are just straight up like pirates of the Caribbean-ass pirates out there with like pirate ships who use flintlock pistols and cutlasses and hunt for treasures. Yeah.
00:24:58
Speaker
And you are one of them, as an amnesiac, Goro Majima. ah Matt, remember when I played ah Like a Dragon Colon, in the man who erased his name, and I said, what if I told you that Kazuma Kiryu had web shooters?
00:25:14
Speaker
Right, yeah. Matt, what if I told you Goro Majima also had web shooters? I would believe it. I would believe it. But mechanically and plot-wise, different, but still kind of undeniably, those are web shooters. Uh-huh.
00:25:33
Speaker
Yeah, he's got it. He's all over this game. ah It is interesting because it is is very much ah in the exact like it is the exact ah Hawaii of oh Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth.
00:25:50
Speaker
which I know that you are ah a fan of, so if you are curious about what's going on in Hawaii after the events of that game, ah go check it out. Is there an island resort building minigame?
00:26:03
Speaker
No. However, is there every other minigame? Yes.
00:26:13
Speaker
I am having a very, very good time with it, as should not come as any kind of surprise if you have even remotely gleaned what my relationship with the Like a Dragon franchise at this point.
00:26:29
Speaker
ah Highly enjoyable. Having a blast with it. Love Majima. oh It's very funny that he... got bumped on the head, forgot he was a Yakuza, and immediately became a swashbuckling pirate.
00:26:44
Speaker
It's great. It's a hoot. no matter you don't you don't care for the more action-y Yakuza games. It's not even that they're more action-y. I i just i i never could quite get into the the combat system of the pre- Like a Dragon. The pre-RPG turn-based Yakuza games.
00:27:13
Speaker
Yeah. ah I don't know. maybe Maybe you would enjoy this one. Okay. but Because it does have... I was talking to a friend of the show, a friend of ours, Ted Anderson, about it, and I was like, yeah, it has like a weird diet Assassin's Creed 3 Assassin's Creed 4 ship combat game because it's about pirates.
00:27:38
Speaker
So if you liked that and you like Yakuza, great news. Oh, well, I love that shit. that's the The ship combat was my favorite thing in any Assassin's Creed game. so Oh, buddy, you get to customize your own pirate ship and add laser beams to it if you want.
00:27:55
Speaker
All right, you're selling me. You're selling me. i' I'll wait for it to get cheap and then I'll then i'll try it. yeah oh Matt, what would you like to recommend? The diner from Twin Peaks, a room where I imagine people have a lot of very divisive opinions about David Lynch, based on whether or not they can acquire pie?
Twin Peaks Diner Reactions
00:28:15
Speaker
ah Yes. I will say this about the diner. it um
00:28:22
Speaker
It doesn't look exactly like... Twin Peaks. I mean, it kind of does. It looks kind of like the Double R Diner for twin from Twin Peaks. um But it looks it does look exactly like the diner in the video game Alan Wake.
00:28:38
Speaker
So I could tell that the developers at Remedy went there and like took pictures and then made put it in a video game. um Anyway, it that is not my recommendation. Before I get to my recommendation, I want to mention one quick thing.
00:28:54
Speaker
Because we got a comment on Patreon about this, and i want to clear the air about it. Because i don't want to seem like I'm advocating for anything that uses AI in any way.
00:29:07
Speaker
i A few weeks ago, I recommended a video that was all about... um but it was something like the death cult that's killing comedy, ah something to that effect, um from a channel um called The Elephant Graveyard.
00:29:26
Speaker
And from what I could tell, there were a couple times when I watched that video where I sort of squinted at the screen. I will admit, like I do with many YouTube videos, I was not looking at the screen the whole time.
00:29:37
Speaker
There were a couple times where I squinted at the screen and wondered if what โ if the imagery was AI and kind of thought that it was just like video editing stuff. Right. Cause like most of what's in it is like video, like actual video. And I could identify it as such and not as AI.
00:29:57
Speaker
um But somebody commented on the Patreon on that episode that I had recommended something by a YouTube AI guy that, um I was not aware of that, and I did not know of any AI being in that video, but if there is, and if he did, then rescind it.
00:30:15
Speaker
um I do think that a lot of what he had to say in the video about ah comedy and where it stands and what the the the horrible influence of these guys โ um I agree with a lot of it, and I think it's well said in the video.
00:30:32
Speaker
um But if he's using AI, fuck him. So ah that's all I got to say about that. I was not aware of any AI use, and and if he's using it to make videos with...
00:30:42
Speaker
um then fuck them. Um, in much the same way I stopped watching legal Eagle videos because those stars had AI shit in them, like animations and stuff.
00:30:53
Speaker
And so I said, fuck them. Um, even though I liked a lot of what legal Eagle often has to say, um, I, I will not abide, uh, AI animation being in a video. And I wanted to make that clear.
00:31:07
Speaker
That's all I have to say about that. ae
00:31:11
Speaker
Beyond that, ah my actual recommendation is ah movie I feel like I watched in the perfect way to watch it. On a plane, on my phone.
00:31:22
Speaker
um It was Thunderbolts Asterisk. Which I was told by many people was pretty good. also watched Thunderbolts last week.
00:31:34
Speaker
And it was pretty good. Yeah. It was pretty good. like Do I have anything to say about it at all? Not really. it's pretty good.
00:31:46
Speaker
Look, I'll tell you something for free about the about the Ajax boys. We love Florence Pugh. She's great in the movie. She's easily the best part of the movie. um But, um you know, as for a Marvel flick of recent years, pretty good.
00:32:04
Speaker
Definitely better than that Captain America movie. ah It is absolutely a movie about having depression. ah like Not even metaphorically. Oh, yeah. From from the first ah bit bit of dialogue and shot, it's a movie about having depression.
00:32:22
Speaker
Yeah. but And as someone who has been recently going through a pretty rough, ah depressive episode, for some reason, that didn't grab me.
00:32:35
Speaker
Like it has in other projects, and maybe that's why. ah Maybe. But, you know, I thought it was, look, is it is it probably the best movie version of the Sentry that we're going to get?
00:32:53
Speaker
I mean, what I was going to say is, yeah, like, usually Sentry stories are about that. And a lot of the comics versions of those stories have been kind of not great.
00:33:09
Speaker
I think this movie version handled it the best I've ever seen.
00:33:17
Speaker
Where, you know, to to spoil the movie a little bit... like There's a part where the sentry is trying to fix it by punching the void in his own brain.
00:33:31
Speaker
like They're in his brain. And he's trying to punch it away. And that doesn't work. And so the rest of the Thunderbolts have to like support him.
00:33:44
Speaker
And that makes it that helps make it go away. That's what actually helps. right That's pretty good. Like, hey...
00:33:54
Speaker
okay, I can get on board with that. um I liked that part of the movie a good amount. ah So, yeah, all in all, it's pretty good.
00:34:07
Speaker
i Again, i think I watched it in the like perfect environment to watch it in, which is on a plane. All I'm saying is, if you're going to make a movie about the Sentry, but not the version of the Sentry that also involves the continuities...
00:34:23
Speaker
then then you've lost you've lost Christopher Jay. Yeah, that's true. That's true. All right, Chris, those are our checks and recs. It's time then to talk about some of the comics of the week.
00:34:39
Speaker
I said some of the comics of the week, but it's been two weeks. And the week we were gone, or I was gone, a book came out that I feel like we've got to talk about. And that is ah Batman No. 1.
00:34:54
Speaker
By Matt Fraction, friend of the show. Longtime friend of the show, Matt for Fraction. A guy who's such a friend of the show that we put his name on a t-shirt. The very first friend of the show, in fact.
00:35:06
Speaker
And Jorge Jimenez. Not a friend of the show, but could be. Could be. Jorge, you're welcome to come on anytime you like. This is a good Batman comic. I was initially unsure of whether we should actually cover this on the show. Not because like i I feel like there's any like conflict of interest or anything, but because I imagine that we liked the new Matt Fraction Batman comic exactly as much as and for the reasons that you think we did.
00:35:42
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Like, but you can guess.
Batman Comic Praise and Critique
00:35:46
Speaker
Like, yeah, that's good. Batman's costume looks good. He's back in blue and gray. Love that.
00:35:52
Speaker
Wish he had his oval, but, you know, but I'll take baby steps. Yeah, baby steps. Baby steps. i I like what happens with Killer Croc in this issue. Yeah, the Killer Croc stuff is good.
00:36:04
Speaker
yeah oh Batman, like, kind of having Ghost Alfred hang out with him. is an interesting thing that I really like. Like, I don't mean that in any kind of backhanded way. I genuinely think it's interesting. And i I feel like the, you know, we've never really had a Batman who has that kind of internal dialogue, which I think is is really cool.
00:36:32
Speaker
And yeah, ah ah this is, Great comics. I'm excited about it. There are some presentational things about this that I was really struck by. Like, you know, we could talk about the story, whatever. Like, obviously, we're going to enjoy it. i I don't quite know what's going on with that Robin cliffhanger at the end, but I'm interested to see where that goes.
00:36:59
Speaker
But like presentationally, there are several things I really, really like about this. One is Anytime there's a scene change, we are told what ah neighborhood of Gotham this is taking place in And ah specific building.
00:37:19
Speaker
Or address. And like, i i am sure, I wish I had read this but when I got to talk to, I talked to Fraction briefly at the show,
00:37:32
Speaker
And we just kind of you know shot the breeze, whatever. I didn't really talk to him about the book. But if I had read this before I talked to him, I would have asked him, like do you have a map? like Did you make a Gotham map and you're mapping out where all these things are taking place?
00:37:49
Speaker
Because it kind of really feels like it. Matt, you don't need to make a Gotham map if you have a Gotham map, which do. Sure, absolutely. um But is it are there distinct neighborhoods in the map?
00:38:01
Speaker
Yeah, man. Okay. Okay. Yeah, man. I know about Burnley and Chelsea. Tricorner. West Coventry. West Coventry. Yeah. Bristol. yeah They're all in there. See, Matt, the problem problem here is you don't know about the DCU guide, the DCU RPG guide to the DC Universe.
00:38:22
Speaker
I do not have the RPG guide. No, I don't. yeah You fool. the But I love that. I love the the the neighborhood stuff um a whole lot.
00:38:33
Speaker
Because it really makes Gotham feel like a real city. you know um But then also, um every time Batman uses a gadget, there's a little information box about it.
00:38:49
Speaker
Hey, that rules. That does rule. I love that. That's the kind of thing that I have loved for literally 37 years. Yeah. yeah
00:39:00
Speaker
It feels almost ah Hickman-y. I mean, it feels Fraction-y too, but like it's it's very designed as well. um But yeah, I love that. It's great.
00:39:12
Speaker
um And then ah Jorge Mendes has been doing Batman comics for some time now. Mm-hmm. And yet, this feels different to me. Like, he is clearly switching up his style a bit to match what is going on in this.
00:39:30
Speaker
Like, the the the title page of the issue is this, like, Batman in silhouette flying across the skyline. And, like, I looked at that page for a while.
00:39:42
Speaker
Because it looks cool as hell.
00:39:46
Speaker
You know i'm saying? Yeah, it's cool. It's good stuff. Good shit. ah All right. Chris, you wanted to talk a little bit about Absolute Batman number 12, which I have not read yet, but I would love to hear about.
00:39:59
Speaker
Yeah, man. oh Absolute Batman's great. I think we've been pretty clear on that front. ah Absolute Batman is incredible.
00:40:12
Speaker
One of the things that I've really enjoyed about it is the different ways that we've seen like kind of the core rogues gallery of Riddler, Penguin, Killer Croc, Harvey Dent over the course of of the absolute Batman's life, and how they're all kind of friends from growing up in Crime Alley together.
00:40:30
Speaker
Now, I knew, because I know how stories work, that eventually... eventually they were going to to become supervillains.
00:40:42
Speaker
yeah I did not expect all of them to become supervillains on the same day. At the same time. yeah At the same time. Because of one dude.
00:40:55
Speaker
That's fucking great, though.
00:40:59
Speaker
That's a hoot. And I love that Batman's response to this is like, oh, maybe being Batman sucks, actually. And Alfred's like, well, you're Batman now.
00:41:09
Speaker
So, know, kind of got to get through it, bud. Yeah, like, whether it sucks or not, you're him. So you got to do it. Yeah. What a truly wild sequence of events we get in this book.
00:41:26
Speaker
It is bananas to me that we are getting currently... Absolute Batman with its Killer Croc stuff.
00:41:38
Speaker
Fraction Batman with its Killer Croc stuff. Completely different Killer Croc stuff, yeah. And Hush 2 all at the same time.
00:41:49
Speaker
Hush 2 got so behind schedule 3, guess, and Batman Volume 4 were ah three i guess and batman volume four are just coming out at the same time. Are happening at the same time. I honestly had not considered that until just now.
00:42:10
Speaker
And now I realize that you are right and that is what's happening. Yep.
00:42:16
Speaker
That's weird. It's so weird. Because that means they gotta put out Batman batman number one then Batman number then Batman number two.
00:42:30
Speaker
yes Wild? Yes. But but one is volume four and what is volume five. Comics. one is volume three and volume four. It's volume three and volume four.
00:42:43
Speaker
Man, I don't know about comics. Comics are wild, dude. that i this This is definitely the first time two comics with the title Batman and just different numbers are both coming out at the same time.
00:42:56
Speaker
Yeah. I can't think of another time where that happened. Yeah.
00:43:04
Speaker
but But it's all because Loeb and Lee couldn't get Hush 2 done on time. hushed too who could have Who could have seen that coming? Who could have seen that coming? So does that mean that Hush 2 was only going to be six issues?
00:43:16
Speaker
I don't know. Because surely they wouldn't have solicited Batman number one if it was going to be 12. I mean, yeah, you would think. You would think.
00:43:28
Speaker
I kind of assumed it would be 12, but...
00:43:32
Speaker
a time Time will tell. Time will tell.
00:43:37
Speaker
Who knows, man. Maybe it'll be 20. Yeah, ah yeah it could go... Who cares now? Maybe it'll be 18, like Nth Man, the ultimate ninja. and We'll find out.
00:43:48
Speaker
Alright, one last comic you wanted to talk about, Chris. Supergirl number 5. Another one I have not had a chance to read yet. but Yeah. ah Maybe Ryan North should read it. Maybe you and Ryan North should read it.
00:44:00
Speaker
Is it about somebody being nice to a dog? It's about crypto having a nice time. Okay. it's i know I don't know why I'm getting dragged into this.
00:44:13
Speaker
I didn't do it. I didn't say anything about you. I said me i it maybe you should read it because you said you hadn't read it yet. Okay, i thought you yeah I thought that was pointed, but okay.
00:44:25
Speaker
No, it's just, I mean, it's a good book. It's a really good book. ah I will read it. I've i've really been enjoying Supergirl so far. Yeah, ah highly recommended. um This issue it does focus on the Super Pets and is all about ah Crypto teaming up with Candy, ah the the bunny from Kandor, and how ah Candy thinks they're enemies.
00:44:51
Speaker
And Krypto's just like, want to play with this little rabbit, this little fat rabbit. And then the second story is ah Streaky and Tiny Tenno ah going and fighting oh super kittens who ate the ah the leftover gross stuff outside the goth club.
00:45:16
Speaker
ah You sent me some panels from it. They are adorable. Uh-huh. Interesting that Sophie Campbell is still writing this issue, but not doing the art this time.
00:45:26
Speaker
yes This is by Paulina Ganeshaw and Rosie Compe. Yeah, ah Paulina Ganeshaw draws the Crypto story, and Rosie Compe draws the the streaky story. um And Paulina Ganeshaw does draw Crypto to look exactly like my dog, Biscuit.
00:45:46
Speaker
ah Which is is good, because this is about Crypto being happy and having a nice time. Yeah, yeah. And that's what I like to see. Crypto is very cute in this. maybe there are some other people who could be like, hey, with the gift of imagination that I have, maybe I should imagine a happy little dog.
00:46:07
Speaker
Yes. just yeah Just a thought. Just a thought. Just something for Ryan North to consider. Just something specifically for Ryan North to consider. yeah All right, Chris, those are our comics reviews for the week.
00:46:24
Speaker
It's time then to take some listener questions.
00:46:42
Speaker
right Chris, our first question comes from RenegadeSwordDog.com. Which is how was the Pacific Northwest? I've already answered this in my check, but I will reiterate, very nice.
00:46:56
Speaker
ah And we had ah really lovely weather the whole time we were there. It didn't rain once. Can you believe it?
00:47:05
Speaker
Amazing. We sure couldn't. i mean i Well, it actually, it did rain once, but... um It was very light rain and not bad. um so We were shocked that the reputation of the rainy Pacific Northwest, it dodged us.
00:47:23
Speaker
Rocket Witzel on our Discord says, if you guys were swords, Matt Sword slash Chris Sword, what kind of swords would you be like? Do they have any positive or negative attributes?
00:47:37
Speaker
ah I would obviously be a bastard sword.
00:47:41
Speaker
now Now, hang on. Yes? what what Why? Why is the Bastard Sword specifically what you would be? Well, because the sword that I own is a Bastard Sword. Oh, okay. So you would just be the sword that you own. And also, um you know, Matt, I can be kind of a dick.
00:47:58
Speaker
but Sometimes, you know that. Listen to me review Hush 2. I mean, but is it is correct. Yes, that's true.
00:48:12
Speaker
I think I would be a rapier. because Because you're witty? Because of my incredible wit. Mine was at least a little self-deprecating. cheap ah rest of us ah No, i but I do think that's the kind of sword I would be.
00:48:34
Speaker
ah Because um if's that's a sword that's the sword from The Princess Bride. Mm-hmm. And like that's the movie that made me love swords.
00:48:45
Speaker
So I think that's what I gotta be. See, that's weird. I have a hard time imagining you as a sword. like To me, you'd be more of like ah like an unworked slab of iron. See, as much as I would love to be the Dragon Slayer, I'm not.
00:49:01
Speaker
Clearly I'm not. clearly i'm not
00:49:07
Speaker
So, like, i I tried to pick something that was more like what I Can say something mean that I don't believe? Hit me. What you talking about, Matt? You're also completely useless, except for just one man.
00:49:20
Speaker
Yeah. like I didn't mean it, but you get you you see where you see where the joke formed in my head. oh Oh, i i I would feel bad if you didn't say it.
00:49:32
Speaker
And that's why I'm a bastard sort.
00:49:39
Speaker
Alright. Sluggo Summers. Do you think you would have any magical sword properties? No. So you would just be like a a regular old sword?
00:49:52
Speaker
Yeah, I'd be a regular swordfighting sword fighting sword. That... Like... you probably It'd probably be hard to just stab somebody with me. You'd you'd have to work to it. like that's That's the downside of me.
00:50:08
Speaker
is like it's It's not very direct. like ah Obviously, you could just pull out a rapier and stab somebody, but you're usually pulling it out to do a sword fight. right like Now, Matt, i I happen to know for a fact that you are currently playing an RPG character who has a talking sword.
00:50:30
Speaker
ah That's true, yes. And your talking sword and your character essentially have the same personality. oh which i think I think the sword is meaner.
00:50:44
Speaker
But yeah. yeah I think we should retcon that and you should play your sword as having the personality of Matt D. Wilson. ah Because I think a Matt D. Wilson personality sword would be a great comedic foil.
00:51:04
Speaker
but Well, yes. Anytime that sort of got pulled out, it would go, do you need me right now?
00:51:12
Speaker
Exactly. That's very funny.
00:51:16
Speaker
ah All right. Sluggo Summers on the Discord asks, are you guys familiar with Trench Crusade? It's got mad berserk vibes. Curious curious if you're following it. i'm not I've never heard of it.
00:51:30
Speaker
I don't know a thing about it, yeah. ah If it's got Berserk vibes, I'm interested. Oh, it's a tabletop game, apparently. Interesting. ah That involves miniatures.
00:51:45
Speaker
ah sounds like Those sound like things you would like, Chris. i You know what, Matt? I do like miniatures. I will look into it further, um but but as of now, I don't know anything about it.
00:51:59
Speaker
I expected it to be like a manga, or not an on um anime, but it is it is a tabletop game.
00:52:11
Speaker
BoQ, Hot Spring Summer on Blue Sky, says, which superhero is most into pumpkin spice lattes in their universe?
00:52:25
Speaker
I mean... The immediate thought that came to mind was was Peter of Spider-Man. Because I do feel like... Doesn't he seem like the kind of guy who gets really excited about like novelty and seasonal drinks?
00:52:40
Speaker
I think he might have be interested, but at the same time, they're too expensive for him to to actually buy. like Because the the PSLs, those are like $6, $7, right? Yeah.
00:52:55
Speaker
right Yeah, I guess i guess peter Peter's like, Peter's probably like, you know, if you buy your own syrup, they can't stop you from taking it in Yes, he is he is definitely buying... They as much cream as you want over on the over on the counter, so just order or drip coffee and make your own latte.
00:53:18
Speaker
He is going to the the little cafe. the Daily Grind. The Daily Grind. He's buying a drip coffee. In the little Greek cup, right? The thank you for your service cup.
00:53:30
Speaker
I don't think that's what it says, but I know the cup you're talking about. Is that what it says? don't think it says thank you for your service. Not thank you for your service. Thank you for your business or whatever it is. it's Yeah. ah Yeah, not thank you for your service. um But the you know the little cup.
00:53:45
Speaker
And he's then he's taking it back to his apartment. And he's pumping pumpkin spice syrup into it. In his apartment.
00:53:58
Speaker
And then maybe like putting some milk in it. and that's how and oh know he gets he gets Here's what he does. is He gets a ah ah drip coffee. He gets a small drip coffee, but can you put it in a large cup?
00:54:09
Speaker
Then he's like, oh can I also have a second large cup? And then he just pours half and half into the large cup. From the store. From the store. Yeah, yeah, yeah Then he takes that home. That goes into the fridge.
00:54:24
Speaker
And then he gets his own pumpkin spice syrup and then adds like a little bit of the half and half that he is also keeping ah for the ah future cups of coffee.
00:54:36
Speaker
yeah And for cereal. He puts half and half on cereal. For sure. I think he likes the idea of it, but he wouldn't actually buy the lattes at the store.
00:54:47
Speaker
Yeah. Now, is Harry buying? He'll have one. Oh yeah, if harry if he's with Harry and Harry's like, hey, I'm buying, then he's getting the latte, for sure. um But I feel like the character who's most likely to roll in buy a PSL, in a to-go cup, and then go to work is Jen Walters.
00:55:10
Speaker
yeah Yeah, that sounds about right. like She's rolling into the law firm with her big... cup from the coffee shop.
00:55:22
Speaker
And in fall, she's all about PSLs. I can see that. ah DC, little tougher.
00:55:34
Speaker
Like, who's drinking pumpkin spice lattes in the DC universe? Nightwing. Fuck, you're right. Absolutely. A million percent. Like... like ah And you know, he's like, I don't know why people make fun of these things. They're delicious.
00:55:48
Speaker
Yeah. Like, you just don't, yeah like, you you haven't you must not have tried it if you're making fun of it. Yeah. Because you know how Jordan's all always like, pumpkin spice everything, I guess.
00:56:01
Speaker
And Nightwing's like, man, that's good. you had one? Yeah. like Like, Barbara's like, you could get a different flavor. And he's like, no, I can't. It's fall.
00:56:14
Speaker
It's fall. They only have these in the fall. Yeah. ah That's a dude doesn't have to worry about money either. Right. he's He's got the trust fund, so he's plonking down for those lattes, no problem. Yeah.
00:56:29
Speaker
yeah But not in a mean way.
00:56:33
Speaker
I mean, Dick probably in his apartment has an espresso machine. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. And it's complicated. ah But he knows how to work it.
00:56:44
Speaker
yeah Yeah. ah Detective Spade on our Discord says, any anime recommendations that haven't been strong enough to make Chex Rex?
00:56:55
Speaker
Well, let me tell you about Baki. Yeah, Baki is the most recent one. ah But that made Chex Rex. so That did make Chex Rex. I also ah recently watched... um Oh, what's the what's the name of it it's got a it? The name is not translated, so I gotta go i gotta go look it up on Crunchyroll.
00:57:20
Speaker
Don-da-don-da-don-da-don? No, but I've thought about watching that one. i it didn't The premise of it didn't sound like something I would like. Yeah.
00:57:33
Speaker
When I was Portland... ah portland And I was just like walking around downtown.
00:57:45
Speaker
I went to, um they had a, ah what's the name of that bookstore? It's like an all manga bookstore, basically. I actually have a gift card for it.
00:57:58
Speaker
Kinokuniya. Oh, Kinokuniya, yeah. I love Kinokuniya. ah So i went to i went there, and I was all ready to like buy some stuff. like I was like, I'm going to buy some manga to take back with me and read on the plane and all of that.
00:58:15
Speaker
And every manga I was like, this one I'm going to buy this one. um They did not have the first volume of. So I couldn't get the first volume of 20th Century Boys, which I've never been able to find.
00:58:26
Speaker
i think it's just impossible to find. Yeah. um But i I was this close to starting JoJo. Oh, bud. I wish you would.
00:58:39
Speaker
I've been reading it from the beginning because I've watched i've watched it kind of out of order and and piecemeal ah in bits and pieces. It's bananas.
00:58:51
Speaker
And it's like, i i got ah mildly made fun of, I believe, by listeners the podcast, because I was like, hey, does anyone ever talk about how the early JoJo's is a lot like Fist of the North Star?
00:59:04
Speaker
and people were like, yes, this is known. This is yeah is very clear. I'm like, oh, okay. I have just not paid any attention to any of this. But man, boy, when Jack the Ripper shows up, like, two chapters in, it's wild.
00:59:19
Speaker
But it was it was another thing where they just happened to not have the first volume. And I probably could have started JoJo anywhere. Like, at at the start of any chapter, right?
00:59:30
Speaker
I feel like you could more or less do that. You could have at least started with Stardust Crusaders. Yeah. But I was like, no, I want to start at the actual beginning. So, ah perhaps I will get into JoJo soon-ish. Buddy, it's an bu's on the Shonen Jump app.
00:59:47
Speaker
Yeah. yeah Best value in comics. ah The one that I wanted to talk about was Asobi Asobase Workshop of Fun, which is on Crunchyroll, which was recommended to me by a friend, and is
Anime Recommendation: Asobi Asobase
01:00:00
Speaker
a... It's very... very Azumanga Daioh vibes.
01:00:06
Speaker
Apparently also based on like a four-panel comic strip series. It's about um these... ah three girls who need to join a ah school club.
01:00:21
Speaker
So they just form one called the, the past timers club where they just kind of do stuff with no point. And it's very funny and very cute and charming.
01:00:32
Speaker
Uh, highly recommended.
01:00:37
Speaker
Read strong's strong reads on our discord asks, would Peter Parker be better if he could eat as much as lu Luffy and Goku? I think he can.
01:00:48
Speaker
i think he can, too. Yeah. i think like I think when Peter eats, I think he throws down. You don't see it very much.
01:01:00
Speaker
And and like the kind of the gag of Peter is that because he has no money, he like has no food at home. But again, if Harry's buying dinner, he's ordering an app just for himself.
01:01:17
Speaker
a huge entree, dessert, maybe even a second entree. He's going to throw down, for sure. yeah like Think about a spider.
01:01:30
Speaker
Think about how a spider's in... like how big a web is for catching food. they do not ah Real spiders in nature do not catch thieves.
01:01:44
Speaker
They catch food to eat. Yeah, with flies and shit. Yeah, and I feel like if you think about how big a spider is versus how big what they're catching is, Peter probably has the proportionate appetite of a spider.
01:02:00
Speaker
He's doing a lot of shit. Yeah.
01:02:05
Speaker
He's not running as fast as the Flash, but he's... he He's got using a lot of energy. He's expending a lot of energy. Yeah. No, I don't know if he gets to like weird Goku levels, but i think he could i think for the Marvel Universe, I think like him and Thor probably go toe-to-toe. ah do whistle At the hometown buffet.
01:02:31
Speaker
Yeah. Doc Whiskey on Blue Sky wants to know, where does Chris recommend I buy a sword online from?
01:02:42
Speaker
See, I bought mine in person. Yeah. I bought mine at the at the Ren Fair from the Smiths, which I would recommend. um But I mean, i mean ju look,
01:02:56
Speaker
you can go to Smoky Mountain Knife Works online if you want. I don't know if I would recommend it, but you certainly can.
01:03:07
Speaker
ill i'll tell I actually recently bought a sword online. But not for me. Okay, I was about to... i i You should have seen the look on my face. i It was surprise, it was betrayal. There was there's a lot.
01:03:22
Speaker
like How was this the first time hearing of this? I bought Bat-Leth.
01:03:29
Speaker
Actually, i and a group of people went in on a Bat-Leth. Okay. Um, to celebrate improvised Star Trek. Now we haven't actually gifted this to our director, Laurie yet, but I, I'm pretty sure she's not listening to this. so it's fine.
01:03:48
Speaker
Um, But we we were like, what can we get as a gift for Laurie for directing the show? And I said, we can buy her a Batleth. So I started looking in different places for where to buy one.
01:04:02
Speaker
And we realized that she has two small children. And so that we should probably not buy her a sharp sword. Mm-hmm. So I found this website. This website is called AxeN, Axe, A-X-E, the letter sword.com.
01:04:21
Speaker
And um they sell not just Batleths, but like the Broken Narsil.
01:04:30
Speaker
ah They have, I think they have Master Swords. They definitely have the Hylian Shield. They have like lots of replicas of like Oh, they they also have Andoril.
01:04:44
Speaker
ah They have like lots of like replicas of various swords. They have Boromir's sword. They have the Atlantean sword. They have like lots of replicas of like swords from pop culture and so forth.
01:04:58
Speaker
ah They have ah the the Chaos Blades from God of War. Nice. They have lots of shit like that. So I was like, okay. and i So I checked there.
01:05:10
Speaker
Well, first I like looked at other places and like all the swords were sharp and weren't going work. But then I looked here and they were selling both sharpened swords and also dull prop swords. Yeah.
01:05:26
Speaker
And I was like, great. So I found a Batleth. It was affordable. I was able to get it shipped here pretty quickly. And it came, and this thing looks fucking great.
01:05:40
Speaker
Awesome. like so This is just my one experience. but the But if you want a replica of a sword from some you know pop culture thing, from...
01:05:55
Speaker
if you want the prophecy hero, blue sword with stand in sheath from legend of Zelda, which is the master sword. Um, I do want that. I, I think this is the master sword from, you're going you're going to need hit me with a link on that, but tears of the kingdom is what this looks like.
01:06:14
Speaker
Um, then, then I would say go there because, um, the, the, the bat left I got from them, was very nice.
01:06:27
Speaker
And a very affordable.
01:06:30
Speaker
ah so Now, if you want it edged, it's more expensive, obviously. And they have different types of metal for their swords.
01:06:41
Speaker
um So, take that as you will. i will I will also say, the Sword of Omens that I got, that came from Etsy. And you can find a lot of people making...
01:06:54
Speaker
Swords on Etsy. Oh, yeah. I'm sure Etsy is full of... You don't know exactly what you're getting on Etsy, but if the reviews are good, you're probably If the reviews are good, you can find some cool stuff. Yeah.
01:07:11
Speaker
cool stuff yeah Now, Matt, how come if i want ah if I want a stainless steel Master Sword, it's $129.99, but if I want a Japanese steel Master Sword, it's $1,200?
01:07:24
Speaker
twelve hundred dollars Look, man.
01:07:30
Speaker
that's just ah That's just a difference in the quality of the metal that you're getting.
01:07:36
Speaker
ah Pedro Valor. Hang on, hang on. Ondarilla is from $74.99.
01:07:43
Speaker
That's with a blunted edge made of stainless steel. But yeah. I mean, well, I don't... It doesn't need to be sharp.
01:07:56
Speaker
but But what's the point if it's not sharp? You look at it. that's That's the point. but You use it as a prop in a show. Well, yeah. m yeah But I mean, you know, Matt, we've discussed this. a sort a sword without an edge.
01:08:13
Speaker
what what What even are we doing? Fair. Pedro Valor on our Discord asks, Would you rather have a talking car or a talking sword?
01:08:25
Speaker
Talking sword. Talking sword all day long. Yeah. A talking car would annoy the fuck out of me. Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I mean, ah honestly, a talking sword would probably annoy me, too.
01:08:41
Speaker
You know... You've got to be in a car for a while. I would rather have a chit-chat with something while I'm having a fight than while I'm trying to drive.
01:08:53
Speaker
Oh, damn. Peter Parker over here.
01:08:58
Speaker
Yeah, exactly. like i mean Look, I'll talk to a person who's in the car with me. But it like if the car is just going to keep trying to talk to me even when I don't want to talk...
01:09:10
Speaker
I like how both of us assume that the car is a bad conversationalist. and ah But I think that bears out, right? like Because what is that car scene that I haven't? We go to the same places.
01:09:23
Speaker
Well, also, like, every example of a talking car is kind of annoying. i mean, mainly Kit from Knight Rider is the one I'm thinking of.
01:09:36
Speaker
Did the car talk in my mother the car? I mean, I think so, because it was his mom. yeah That reference is two generations before our time, Matt. I watched a lot of Nick at Night.
01:09:50
Speaker
i do But I don't think I ever actually watched an episode of My Mother of the Car. don't know, feel like a talking sword would be pretty cool. talking sort would be I feel like a talking sword would be cooler. i'll talk Here's the a talking car is sci-fi, and a talking sword is fantasy.
01:10:07
Speaker
And I feel like talking sword is like, oh shit, magic's real. Talking car is just like, oh god, is this thing like an LLM? Yeah, that's I think that's a big part of it. Like, you're talking sword is magic. You're talking car is technology.
01:10:22
Speaker
Yeah. And I don't want to talk to some robot. Yeah, don't want to talk to fucking robot. Yeah. we've but We've all learned the folly of that lately. Now, that that said, my mother the car is not...
01:10:36
Speaker
A car... ah that that's what That's a car that's a ghost. That's a haunted car. Yes. So would you rather have a magic talking sword or a haunted car? but that ah so I'd still go magic talking sword. still go with the sword, because then I'd be like, well, shit, I don't want this person's immortal soul trapped in this Kia for the rest of time.
01:11:01
Speaker
And also, I guess souls are... like I guess I was wrong about that one, too. Yeah. You got a lot you get a lot to work out if you have a talking card. I would i would rather be wrong about the existence of magic swords.
01:11:15
Speaker
Kathy Leamy, our friend, Metro Kitty on Blue Sky, says, Who are the most bizarre, unexpected creators you can imagine working on Daredevil?
01:11:27
Speaker
It would have been Chip. But then he did it. But he did it. Yeah. Yeah.
01:11:36
Speaker
Everyone I'm thinking of, I'm like, that sounds pretty good, actually. Roger Langridge, that sounds good. Actually, that would be a hoot. but My first thought is just plop Sophie Campbell off of Supergirl and onto Daredevil.
01:11:49
Speaker
But like absolutely, Sophie Campbell could do that. Yeah, Sophie Campbell's Daredevil would kick ass, too. It would kick ass. like because Because we've seen Sophie Campbell do like badass comics, because we've seen Glory.
01:12:03
Speaker
Like... like Sophie Campbell's Daredevil would whip. Oh, I got it. I got it. I got it. I got it. I got it. Okay. here's Here's the one that would be surprising and would also not whip is them dudes from Penny Arcade.
01:12:21
Speaker
Wow, that would fucking suck. Yeah. Damn. Okay, okay. Here's one that would be surprising and would whip. Okay. Stan Sakai. Yeah, that would kick ass, dude. Yeah.
01:12:35
Speaker
Can you imagine? Yeah. You're talking about the dude who's never done bad comics? Well, I mean, but he's only ever done really the one book, right?
01:12:45
Speaker
But imagine. Just imagine. Just imagine. Stan Sakai. Just imagine Stan Sakai creating Daredevil. Guy, can we get another just imagine, but it's Stan Sakai instead of Stan Lee?
01:12:59
Speaker
That's what I'm saying. That would be good.
01:13:04
Speaker
Ted Lee on our Discord. that's that That's the homie Ted Anderson. That is the homie Ted Anderson. He asks, what are some of your favorite origin stories for parts of a costume?
01:13:18
Speaker
Like Barry Allen's bow tie or the boob window, but good. Obviously the bat flying through the window is best, but what about smaller justifications? The glasses in Superman Birthright because they cut the the intense blue of Clark's eyes?
01:13:32
Speaker
Question? Do you have a favorite? That's pretty good touch. That is a pretty good touch. i like Superman Birthright, pretty good. Yeah, I will say, I have i will always prefer the the S stands for Superman, and and Martha Kent designed it, and Lois names him Superman, to the S as a Kryptonian symbol.
01:14:01
Speaker
I know that ah I... Me and ah John Byrne, who of course went missing in the Bermuda Triangle, we lost that battle. oh But I still think... S being a Kryptonian symbol like predates Crisis, right?
01:14:19
Speaker
Oh yeah, I mean, it's in the it's in the movie. It's definitely in the movie, yeah. I think it actually first is from the movie. That makes sense, yeah. yeah But yeah, I...
01:14:33
Speaker
The S doesn't need to mean anything. His name's Superman. It could just be an S. It can just be an S. But I do like Lois naming him Superman.
01:14:45
Speaker
Yes. like He should be called Superman by the Daily Planet. Yeah. ah Not by, I don't know. but what are What are the other versions of that?
01:14:56
Speaker
Of the S? Yeah. No, of him getting the name Superman, of other people naming him Superman. I mean, it it usually does come from like Lois or from the Daily Planet, but like I like that she names him that, and then that is where the symbol comes from.
01:15:11
Speaker
I see. Yes. ah yes ah I guess there's maybe somewhere where like Lex named him or something, but... um But anyway, yeah, like the S being a Kryptonian symbol, but like I think that's a result of the S getting more and more design-y over the years. like I know when I was a kid, and I looked at the S, I didn't see an S. I saw the yellow parts.
01:15:36
Speaker
Do you see the two fish? Yeah. Yeah, that's that's a... You and John Byrne, same thing. Yeah, we're exactly alike, me him. Yeah.
01:15:48
Speaker
the But like yeah, I remember like watching the movie the Christopher Reeve movies when I was a kid and like never seeing that was an S. And I remember my mom telling me that it was an S and being like, no, it's not.
01:16:02
Speaker
And it took me it took me a long time to see it, um but I finally got there. ah But yeah, the the the glasses in Birthright, that's a nice touch. ah I like in in the comics that one of the reasons that Spider-Man has like a full face mask is to muffle his voice and make his voice sound deeper because he's fucking a child when he starts.
01:16:27
Speaker
because he's Yeah, he's like, what, 15? Yeah, he and I like i i like the MCU bit about ah the lenses in his mask being because his spider sense is very like overwhelming and... and like sensory, oh so he has to have those big ol big old eyes to kind of you know block everything out.
01:16:49
Speaker
I like that. yeah I don't mind that. i I'll be real. i like I've never super-duper loved Spider-Man's eyes in any movie costume.
01:17:04
Speaker
But I also don't know how they how they would do it to make it look quote-unquote, right. Yeah, like the way they're supposed to look. Yeah. Because i like I don't think of them as like big lenses, because they're never actually drawn that way, you know?
01:17:20
Speaker
in In comic books. um They're just like big eyes on a mask that like can magically narrow. Yeah. Like ah yeah yeah like oh oh The Bruce Timm design for Harley Quinn, like her little jesters, hat, pom-poms, um reflect her mood.
01:17:45
Speaker
Like they they they sag when she's sad. Yes. yes so the The kind of shit you can only do in comics and animation. and like yeah You could not never do in a live-action movie.
01:17:58
Speaker
I'm trying to think of like a little detail from a costume that I but i liked. I mean, i Cap's chainmail. Cap's Chainmail, pretty good. I love the explanation of Cap's Chainmail. It's actually a defensive measure yeah against being shot or stabbed.
01:18:19
Speaker
um like I know that's not what it was originally intended for when it was designed. why i I love that it is, you know from a design standpoint, like Captain America is a modern-day knight.
01:18:34
Speaker
right yeah like He's got them them big ol' buccaneer boots and and chain mail. And I think like kind of giving it an incontinuity reason of, yeah, this dude could get shot, and it would be bad.
01:18:51
Speaker
Yeah, well he's he's he's you know got like super soldier serum, but like he's still a human being who can be shot.
01:19:01
Speaker
Yeah, like that. i like that yeah It's weird that sometimes he's drawn without it. And I feel like that's more and more the case. That he doesn't have the chainmail anymore. It's weird that he used to wear it under a jacket so much.
01:19:19
Speaker
Look, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. puts the He puts the trench coat on a lot in the Mark Grunewald run. He really does, yeah. There trench coats. Trench coats are a key component of the Mark Grunewald run of Captain America.
01:19:35
Speaker
Everybody's wearing full-ass superhero costumes with trench coats on, which is weird. I've been to a lot of conventions. I've been to conventions in the wintertime. You know what i've never seen is a full-costume cosplayer wearing a h trench coat over their costume.
01:19:52
Speaker
If I saw somebody in a pretty good thing cosplay... But wearing a trench coat over it, I would go up to that person and take a picture. like Rarely do I say anything to cosplayers, and i think I've maybe asked for a picture with โ I could count the number on one hand, but if I saw a thing cosplayer in a trench coat, I would do it.
01:20:21
Speaker
i have I did realize at Rose City that the cosplay of late that will get me to say to someone, hey, cool costume, you're blank, is if they're dressed like a Resident Evil character.
01:20:36
Speaker
Because at Heroes Con, I said it to someone who was dressed like Ada Wong. And at Rose City, I said it to someone who was dressed like Leon S. Kennedy. And like I could not help myself.
01:20:47
Speaker
That person walked by and I was like, Leon S. Kennedy!
01:20:53
Speaker
ah Chris, do you have any other examples of like costume details that you especially like? Or explanations for them? Not that I can think of off the top of my head.
01:21:05
Speaker
Yeah, the first and best one that comes to mind for me is Cap's chainmail. Yeah, I can think of like a lot of ah bad reasons. yeah like I can think of a lot of Barry Allen's bow ties.
01:21:16
Speaker
yeah But, i don't know, like i I do feel like
01:21:23
Speaker
the the The Superman S being something that he gets from from Earth, I think is important. And that it's an S, I think is important. ah So that's the that's the one that really comes to mind for me.
01:21:37
Speaker
Our next question is from Chris Porkchops Aulis. That's my first name. B.A. Aulis on Blue Sky. What is the superior gummied candy?
01:21:51
Speaker
Okay, so like at like what are we what are we talking here? like is Is this a matter of shape? Is this like bears versus fish? I'll tell you the one that I think tastes the best. Okay. ah Swedish fish.
01:22:04
Speaker
Okay. I like Swedish fish. They're good. I mean, look, I don't dislike Swedish fish, but Haribo gold bears are the best. Matt? Fine.
01:22:16
Speaker
do We can agree to disagree. I like the texture of Swedish fish. we can't, actually.
01:22:22
Speaker
You know what, though? I recently learned about the Trader Joe's version of Swedish Fish. Yeah. Which is called Scandinavian Swimmers. shut That is simultaneously a great and terrible name for that product.
01:22:36
Speaker
Absolutely it is. And also, they're like kind of sour.
01:22:43
Speaker
um They're good as hell. like Next time I'm at Trader Joe's, buying like a ah big bag of Scandinavian Swimmers. Matt, can 100% real with you right now?
01:22:54
Speaker
Hit me, dog. I would fuck up a Haribo Star Mix right now. I hear you. God, like I'm about ready to go to the store. It is 8.58pm on a Thursday.
01:23:10
Speaker
i have like a weird textural thing about like regular gummy bears. they're like They get stuck in my teeth. a little too much.
01:23:22
Speaker
um But there's something about the texture of Swedish fish that is just better for me, for whatever reason. But, nonetheless, here is our next question. ah here this is Okay, this is an interesting question.
01:23:39
Speaker
This is from Chris is working on Jen's sword. That's an update on that, by the way. ah About 20 days. left We did. Two weeks left.
01:23:50
Speaker
We did. it We heard from Chris almost immediately. Yeah. ah ah About, about, the about working on Jen's sword. So ah we're happy to hear about that.
01:24:00
Speaker
um But here's what Chris says. Broad stroke politics, Bermuda triangle aside. Is John Byrne the Jim Cornette of comics?
01:24:22
Speaker
Maybe? Maybe. don't think Jim Cornette ever did anything that was actually as good as the good stuff John Byrne did. Jim Cornette never did X-Men, you know?
01:24:35
Speaker
Jim Cornette... Hmm. I mean, what like... was Unless he was the mastermind behind the Rock and Roll Express and the Midnight Express...
01:24:50
Speaker
Probably the best thing Jim Cornette ever did was those like shoot promos he did on Raw in 1993. Do you remember those? It was like 96. Was it later? Okay, it was later.
01:25:03
Speaker
It's like immediately prior to โ I like it's it's i think they they overlap Brett leaving.
01:25:14
Speaker
Yes, I think that's true i think that's right. yeah like I remember those being like certainly the most entertaining thing on Raw at the time, which was maybe the worst period of WWF programming.
01:25:28
Speaker
It's kind of rough. Pre-Stone Cold, it's it's rough rough going. Yeah. where like Sean is the top guy, but like, he's so fucked up. He can't do
Wrestling Legacies and Opinions
01:25:44
Speaker
anything. It's like, not, not a great Sean.
01:25:49
Speaker
Yeah. Uh, like I got weird feelings about Sean Michaels anyway, but, um, like, I feel like when it was him and Brett, like, I'm like neither of them.
01:26:00
Speaker
Uh, but that's me. That's me. Sorry. ah it's just my opinion. it's ah a Jim Cornette. yeah um ah but yeah like like I do feel like with Byrne and Cornette, there a sense of, at least for certain things from the distant past, there's a you gotta to hand it to them.
01:26:32
Speaker
I said before, like I think Cornette is one of my examples of... ah my theory that it's very difficult, like, like the part of your brain that controls whether or not you're a good person might also be the part that controls whether you are like, you have like a good mind for professional wrestling because very rarely is someone both of those at the same time. That's true. Uh, maybe Dusty, maybe Dusty Rhodes, maybe Dusty. Yeah.
01:27:06
Speaker
Maybe. oh But, like, I think Cornette had a good mind for the business. And I think, like, he he can still occasionally make a good point.
01:27:22
Speaker
But what's his Man of Steel? You know? What's Dark Phoenix saga? that's I think, ah yeah, I think, ultimately, Byrne had higher highs.
01:27:36
Speaker
And in his later years... And opinions, he has lower lows. And work, he has lower lows. Yeah, yeah. I would say, i would say i would i would pick, if John Byrne was still around doing comics today and not tragically lost in the Pigmeter Triangle, I would say almost certainly, I'd rather have Jim Cornette be in charge of something than John Byrne.
01:28:02
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. It's a, I don't know. It's, it's an interesting question. I i think Cornette never got as good as burn was at comics in wrestling and never got as bad as burn either.
01:28:21
Speaker
Cause look like there's a lot of stuff I don't ah agree with Jim Cornette about, um,
01:28:29
Speaker
But he still hates Vince Russo. So you got to hand that to him. you You know, Matt,
01:28:41
Speaker
yet I am going to regret saying this as soon as I said it. In the Vince Russo versus Jim Cornette fight, I know it's Aliens versus Predator and whoever wins, we lose.
01:28:55
Speaker
Correct. But if somebody is more right than somebody else, It's Vince Russo. Oof, I don't know about that. Oh, that's... wo boy. No, because the whole thing is like... The whole thing is like... Jim Cornette hates that Vince Russo treats it like it's fiction.
01:29:15
Speaker
I mean, yes, yes. Jim Cornette is still way too obsessed with protecting the business. Which no one's been doing for 40 years. and And his whole thing about like, you know, don't you dare call it fake. Because I've had, you know...
01:29:30
Speaker
I've known friends who have given their lives for this business. And it's like, yeah, well that sucks, dude. Like they, like no one should have to do that. But also it's fiction. It's acting like that is part of it. It's not like that doesn't make it any less important or, or less of an achievement, but like what Why do you think what you do is more impressive than what um fucking Tom Hanks does? you know
01:30:04
Speaker
It's the same thing. It's acting, you're right. yeah like it's it's Yeah, I don't know. it's i'm like I'm like Larry David in the Palestinian Chicken episode. where ah Yeah, man, i look.
01:30:15
Speaker
but ah it's it's It's like, i
01:30:23
Speaker
he's he's Aliens versus Predator. I'm just saying, in that particular conflict, I picked a side.
Role-playing Games Discussion
01:30:33
Speaker
Joe Jet on our Discord says, thoughts on Morkborg as a system and setting.
01:30:40
Speaker
If I recall, you were playing that with L. That's true. That's the game that I have a talking sword in. um It's a hoot. it's it's um It's very grim, but in but it's so grim, it's almost like funny.
01:30:53
Speaker
Yes. Because every day you do roll, depending on your roll, end of the world either happens more quickly or doesn't.
01:31:07
Speaker
So it's that kind of game. Yeah, but i I feel like there is a a limited kind of story you can tell with Morkborg. but ah But I think it can be a very fun story. And I like the the the thought and elements that have been put into the system. Like, I think there's some really cool stuff. Like, there's that, you know, graveyard that no one can go to because it's endless and creepy and just, like, a good chunk of the world map is just a graveyard.
01:31:42
Speaker
Yeah. um Which is where our campaign started, which I thought was very fun. So it's very fun in that kind of like you know Warhammer, everything has 18 skulls on it sort of way, which I do quite like.
01:31:55
Speaker
And and like we're playing like straight up Morkborg, which takes place in that setting. yeah there's also You can also play it where you're just playing with the system, but you don't have to use the maps and the...
01:32:09
Speaker
the setting and all of that stuff you just use the system like we did that for a one shot where we played as pirates yeah uh i do like that it is it is adaptable to so many things and like there's a there's pirate borg and there's cyborg which is the cyberpunk one which i think yeah yes yes name it that uh mechanically i've said it before i like role-playing games i love dungeons and dragons i like I like there being that many numbers.
01:32:41
Speaker
I don't know why. Because you would think, but Chris, you you you like telling stories and you like the role-playing aspect and you like, you know, ah a lot of your time is spent figuring out how to make D&D combat not the most boring part of the game and most repetitive.
01:33:01
Speaker
And I think you can do that. But for some reason, that's i want I need those numbers to go up. I need those numbers to go up. And I need to roll that 20 and have it be a good thing.
Support for Trans Creators
01:33:16
Speaker
ah Here's another question from Michael Federigo Haida on our Discord, who says, What's the best way to support trans creators after the bullshit DC pulled on Gresham Felker Martin this week?
01:33:32
Speaker
ah We won't well have to We don't have to tell you the whole story of what happened there. The Red Hood book got canceled over a post that Gretchen Felker Martin made, which is absolutely ridiculous.
01:33:47
Speaker
um But here's what I would say to what you can do to support ah people, um especially trans creators, in the aftermath of that.
01:33:58
Speaker
um Find out if they have a Patreon and go donate to it. And buy and support their work. Yeah. Now, like, if this makes you really mad at DC Comics, which I completely understand why it would.
01:34:15
Speaker
And so you're like, well, I don't want to support the entity, the company, by buying Supergirl. Okay, fine.
01:34:26
Speaker
um But, you know. That's how you would support Sophie Campbell. um But but if if you don't want to do that, which I understand, then find other ways to directly support trans creators.
01:34:44
Speaker
Either by, like I said, supporting their Patreon, find their Patreon support it. Find their independent work and buy that. There there are ways to do it. Yeah.
01:34:56
Speaker
Yeah. Anything to add, Chris? i mean I think the best way that you can support any creator, but I think particularly trans creators and ah creators from marginalized groups, is directly.
01:35:11
Speaker
um Patreon, great way to do that. ah Buying things directly from them, if they have an online store, is a great way to do that. ah yeah Even if there's a con, seek them out.
01:35:25
Speaker
ah But, you know, a A regular $1 a month Patreon donation goes so far. Yeah, honestly, that does more than buying you know a book that comes out yeah in a month. and like like i thought Buy their work.
01:35:45
Speaker
Buy anybody's work. could you know Jody Stroutman, big frame friend of the show. Yeah. doing a lot of lettering on a lot of books right now. Yeah. You should buy all of those.
01:35:56
Speaker
Um, but, but direct support helps even more. Yeah. And I would say, uh, that's, that's our advice, but, uh, probably a better way to find out how to support trans creators is, uh, go find them and ask them directly.
01:36:16
Speaker
oh how you can support them, you know, follow them on, on blue sky or, or at other ways to follow people. Again, Patreon is a great way to, to follow and support.
01:36:28
Speaker
oh Yeah. Go, you know, if you've got someone in mind, go ask and, and maybe they'll say, Oh, well, I've got this book out that maybe you didn't even know about. That's great.

Yeah. ah So, It takes a little work on your part, but think... And if you can, if you're still on any kind of social media, which... I don't blame me if you're not on any social anyoc media. Yeah. i the the The longer i'm I'm on it, the less I want to be.
01:36:58
Speaker
ah But yeah, like a nice thing to do is always, if you enjoy somebody's work, talk them up. For sure, yeah. like it's what It's one of the things we try to do on this show. Like...
01:37:10
Speaker
oh we We have a limit of comics that we talk about every week so that we don't talk about the week's comics for ah the you know for an hour.
01:37:23
Speaker
But and a lot of that is encouraging us not just to review your Doomsday Clocks and your Hush-Tos, but to be like, hey, this book is is making me smile these days. like that for For Supergirl, for Absolute Batman, for oh books like that. like that is a like That's a thing that we can do genuinely.
01:37:49
Speaker
Word of mouth is a great advertisement. you know Tell people you like it like look i you know You may not think that you have a platform if you have you know ah a handful of followers on social media, but like I know, like just based on my experience, like anytime I caught have caught wind of somebody like talking up or praising work that I've done, um that's been a big help in in encouraging me to continue. Yeah, for sure. which
01:38:24
Speaker
Which um you know I don't always feel like doing. ah Buddy, don't get me started. ah so you know A way to encourage people to keep making stuff is by saying something nice about it in a public forum.
01:38:43
Speaker
um where they They may or may not even see it, but if they do, it will it will be encouraging for them. Trust me. And if and if somebody if anybody sees it, and that makes them go, oh, maybe I'll check that out, then that's...
01:38:59
Speaker
That is one of the best cases you could possibly ask for as a creator. Yeah. One of the best uses of social media as well. um All right. I want to get in one
Riddler Design Critique and Contact Info
01:39:08
Speaker
last question. This is from Chris Kaiser on our Discord, who says, why do comics artists keep coming up with terrible redesigns for the Riddler?
01:39:19
Speaker
i don't know, man. um don't know. I don't know why design for Batman villains peaked 1992. Yeah.
01:39:36
Speaker
I really think that Design for Batman villains not only peaked in 1992, largely peaked on Batman the Animated Series. Yeah. has Has any villain who was on Batman the Animated Series ever looked better than when they were on Batman the Animated Series?
01:39:53
Speaker
I mean, maybe the Scarecrow.
01:39:57
Speaker
I don't know. Like... i think I think Scarecrow on Batman the Animated Series looks a little bit like a goober. but I mean, he kind of is, though. he's kind that He is kind of a goober.
01:40:09
Speaker
I do like the โ that's one of the few like new Batman Adventures redesigns. That's better. Scarecrow and Poison Ivy are like the Switched Kids BB. Those were the two that I think had really good redesigns. But Riddler and Joker and Penguin never looked any better.
01:40:26
Speaker
Yeah, Riddler with his... Kat Holman looked better when she was Julie Newmar. Riddler in his suit and tie with a question mark on it and bowler hat. That's the best Riddler. Best he's ever looked.
01:40:41
Speaker
Like, why change that ever? Yeah, man. I mean, why change how Batman looks? I mean, the great point. That's also the best Batman ever looked, unfortunately. point.
01:40:54
Speaker
But like like I don't mind Riddler like Frank Gorshin Riddler. Frank Gorshin Riddler also wore a suit sometimes, and that looked pretty cool. but That did look pretty cool. ah but like And I like Frank Gorshin Riddler with the one big question mark. I don't like the the suit with the... Okay, I don't like the body suit, like the leotard, with all the question marks on it.
01:41:20
Speaker
yeah I they do like the jacket with all the question marks on it. There's the green like suit suit that has a bunch of question marks on it.
01:41:32
Speaker
There's the bodysuit that has the single question mark on it. I like that. And there's the single then then there's the bodysuit that has multiple question marks on it. Do not like that. The bodysuit with the single question mark on it looks great.
01:41:45
Speaker
Which was also what John Astin wore in that one episode. Yeah. But like, the recent Riddler stuff where he's got this the weird sideburns.
01:41:58
Speaker
And like, big thick Riddler, I don't know what's going on with this. I don't necessarily mind his big sideburns. I kind of like his big sideburns. But I think he's just wearing those clothes.
01:42:10
Speaker
I don't get it. I don't get the big sideburns. Sometimes people have big sideburns, man. But why? Because they don't like shaving. um fair like i i get well i I don't mind other people having them, but it's weird with the Riddler, I feel like.
01:42:29
Speaker
but yeah I don't know, man. and like just Just leave him alone. Let him look cool.
01:42:41
Speaker
Just leave him alone. Just let him look cool.
01:42:46
Speaker
