Welcome back to Oh, There You Are! Today’s episode features a conversation that will leave you feeling seen, encouraged, and ready to reclaim your power.

I had the honor of sitting down with Desra—a proud mom of two, mental health advocate, and wellness leader with Green Compass. At 52 years young, she’s walking proof that it’s never too late to rediscover your worth and step into a life that feels good from the inside out.

Desra gets real about the moments she wanted to give up—on herself and on life. But instead of staying in that place, she chose to rise. And now, she’s using her story to remind others: You are not alone. If she can rise above, so can you.

This episode dives into:

  • Breaking through self-doubt and burnout
  • The power of choosing yourself again and again
  • What it means to lead with wellness and intention
  • And how her personal motto—“Make it a great day”—is so much more than a feel-good phrase. It’s a mindset shift that’s changed her life.

If you’re standing in a hard season or feel disconnected from who you are, this episode will meet you right where you are—with compassion, courage, and community.

🎧 Tap play, and let Desra’s words remind you: You’re not behind. You’re becoming.

Introducing Desiree: A Journey of Overcoming Self-Doubt

00:01:15
Speaker
Hey friend, welcome back to all There You Are. I'm honored to sit down with a truly incredible woman, somebody who embodies resilience, empowerment, and hope.
00:01:26
Speaker
At 52 years young, Desiree is a proud mom of two, a dedicated mental health advocate, and a passionate leader in wellness. She has turned her own journey of overcoming self-doubt into one of inspiration, helping others embrace their worth and well-being,
00:01:43
Speaker
She's also a fierce advocate for Green Compass, committed to guiding others towards a healthier, more balanced life. Her mission is simple but powerful. You're not alone. If she can rise above, so can you.
00:01:56
Speaker
So please help me welcome the unstoppable, inspiring Desra. Welcome! Thank you. yeah so welcome. really exciting. I just love having the opportunity to have other people on who are just so excited to share their story.
00:02:14
Speaker
um Part of my mission and passion of wanting to start this project of, oh, there you are was, you know, like you listen to podcasts and you listen to so many people have famous people on, right? And people who we all recognize their names or, you know, eventually will just through the acts and things that they're doing. And I was just like, I really want to have a platform that allows the everyday common person like me you know, like my friends, my family, like you, um that even though in the world's eyes, they might not know us yet, but they're going to, right?
00:02:48
Speaker
One person at a time. So I think that that is what I wanted this mission to be, to allow other people to get excited and to put on their brave hat, come and share their story, because there's something inside then that ah releases something for somebody else then,
00:03:03
Speaker
to go and share their story next. So with that, I'm going to let you start wherever you feel like in a part of the story that you want to help bring us to. and let's see where this goes.
00:03:15
Speaker
OK, sounds

Desiree's Transformation with CBD and Advocacy

00:03:16
Speaker
great. um So um I'm Des. My name is Desra, but my friends call me Des. um And I have been suffering with mental illness pretty much all of my life since I was 15 years old.
00:03:32
Speaker
um What turned my life around was kind of like a beacon of hope, if you will. um And that was January, 2023, when I was literally at my end of my rope.
00:03:46
Speaker
I had seen um an advocate of Green Compass talk about CBD and how it helped with ah mood support and all together um just bo balance of the body.
00:04:01
Speaker
nervous system. So I reached out to her and i I basically told her that I was in the darkest place that I'd ever been in. um I was so bad that I couldn't get out of bed.
00:04:12
Speaker
i didn't want to see anybody. and it And it was really funny because like the, the partner that I'd been with almost five years had no clue what was going on. I just knew how to put on a face And um she had gifted me a bottle of CBD-A, which is kind of like the raw form of CBD before it becomes CBD.
00:04:34
Speaker
um And it has a serotonin boost. And within five days... I was able to see a light that I hadn't seen in a very long time.
00:04:45
Speaker
um It was almost, I call it my miracle oil because i did want to get out of bed. i did for the first time want to live my life and i have been living the best life um that I could possibly live at age 52. This all ensued in 2023.
00:05:08
Speaker
So that let's see, it's 2025. So yeah, two years ago. Yeah. So I've been on this, you know, a passion, as I call it. um You know, I've always tried to find a purpose in my life and I never really was able to find that.
00:05:25
Speaker
But I felt so strongly about how CBD a helped me and CBD in general that I actually decided myself to become an advocate um because,
00:05:37
Speaker
I felt it was it was my purpose to share these products and help so many. And I have. And that in itself is just absolutely priceless to me.

Finding Purpose and Community in Green Compass

00:05:49
Speaker
Well, I take it, you know, what I hear, like whenever you are looking for a purpose, even though in your darkest times, I hear, you know, your heart was open. You were looking right for somebody to see you, to hear you and to understand.
00:06:03
Speaker
And, you know, these supplements or, you know, CBD, I don't know. Do you consider them supplements or you know, nutritional, yeah, nutritional supplements, you know, but they're there as a tool. And in order for them, yes, they're going to work inside of our body, but you have to be open and ready for them to work. I mean, isn't that true? Like in anything that we attempt to do?
00:06:23
Speaker
No, absolutely. And I wasn't. um And it was because of all of the different medications that I have tried. you know, you try so many things and they don't work. um So you get a little, you know, deflated. You're just like, why bother? Why bother? So for a long time,
00:06:43
Speaker
And I know it wasn't a smart choice, but I was just so tired of feeling so yucky and numb to everything that I myself decided to go off of medication. And I am no way at all telling people to do that. Please do not not do that.
00:06:58
Speaker
um But that was just a choice, personal choice that I made. um And like you just said, i was not ready to actually, it's almost like you you, like you said, you have to have that mindset. Okay.
00:07:11
Speaker
Okay. It's time. And I think that I was just at the end of my rope so much that I was contemplating, you know, leaving and just quitting.
00:07:25
Speaker
and I can say that I'm really happy I didn't do that. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. Because we're here and we're getting to meet you, right?
00:07:36
Speaker
And you're learning how to live in the present and in the present moment. And I don't know, like, I know we're not supposed to look for external validations, but you're getting to witness people that you're getting to help, right?
00:07:50
Speaker
Because you stay in Yes, absolutely. and like I said, you know, I have never felt like I've had a purpose, but I really feel like I have a purpose now. Like I'm meant to be here. And that's what keeps me going.
00:08:07
Speaker
You know, I also do different things. Like I have different tools in my toolbox. It's not just CBD. yeah It's walking. It's writing gratitude every night. it's um It's hard for me to meditate, but I do try to listen to like relaxing music and stuff like that.
00:08:26
Speaker
But it's not just

Support Systems and Tools for Mental Health

00:08:27
Speaker
one thing. And you have to be at a point in your life when you're just ready to just let it in, let it flow live. let the beautifulness of it all just unravel and unravel in a good way, not a bad way, because this has been an amazing adventure for me. um You know, when I first joined Green Compass, I had told,
00:08:51
Speaker
the person that got me involved, that I was in no way going to build a team. And now I have 15 people underneath me. um And that in itself is amazing because I've never felt like a leader. I've never felt like, you know, I ah belonged in a community.
00:09:11
Speaker
But the community of Green Compass is just by far different than I've ever experienced in my life. So it's like a family. Yeah, it's that level of accepted be acceptance and being seen.
00:09:27
Speaker
And um yeah, and how your support system, right? Because your partner, Chris, you post and talk about him a lot. So it's really important. Like once you finally said, okay, I'm ready for help. I'm ready to step out of this dark cloud um because I know it it is hard to do it on your own. So would you say having that solid support system has been great, you know, extra cushion for you?
00:09:50
Speaker
Oh, yeah. If it wasn't for him, i probably wouldn't have even tried the CBDA because I asked him, I said, what do you think? He says, you've tried everything else. What do you have to lose?
00:10:02
Speaker
He was right. You know, and He's stuck by me through the thick and the thin like he's seen me at my highest you see me at my lowest and he's still here i ask him all the time why he is because I because I love you and he just goes on and on you know and it sometimes it's really hard to hear because you know you have like these records that have played like all of your life in your head about You're not worthy. You're not beautiful.
00:10:32
Speaker
yeah um Why are you here? you know and you start believing those records. And now I'm able to break those records one by one slowly.
00:10:44
Speaker
Absolutely. And it's, you know, and like you had mentioned, it's not always easy. Some days we might still be sitting down, you know, in our dark days. um But then you have that toolbox that you had mentioned also that sits beside you that you're like, OK, I know that this has worked and you try it again. And maybe that day that one still doesn't feel right, you know.
00:11:03
Speaker
But I feel like because you have an understanding that, you know, you can pull yourself back out and have your phone a friend and you might not fall as deep.

Gratitude, Positivity, and Laughter's Impact on Mental Health

00:11:13
Speaker
And you might not sit there as long, but being vulnerable and open and just being honest with people that not every day is easy.
00:11:22
Speaker
No, it's not. I mean, one of my goals, and this might be a silly goal, but it is to get out of bed and stay out of bed. um You know, and I work full time. I've been with a company for 17 years um and we work remote now um because of COVID. And it's been really difficult for me because,
00:11:43
Speaker
I've always been a social bug. I've always loved that social interaction. And I don't have that because I actually work with um ah people in Canada, but out of the U.S. So it's like all I have is teams for chat.
00:12:01
Speaker
you know, and maybe ah Teams phone calls and stuff like that. But that's really it. And my cats. I love my cats. but I'm glad that they can't talk back to me. oh well Sometimes don't we pretend to make up our own little voices and pretend they say things to us anyway.
00:12:21
Speaker
But, you know, that little goal that I have every day, you know, of getting out of bed and staying out of bed has really helped. So they say that, like, if you start challenging yourself, say, like, you have a 66-day challenge.
00:12:35
Speaker
That's how I started my gratitude is it was a 66-day challenge. And for 66 days, I had to write what I was grateful for. And I'll tell you something. It was really difficult in the very beginning. And I was like, I'm grateful for the sky. I'm grateful for air.
00:12:51
Speaker
But as I was going along, it was really cool because I was like being more detailed about it and just realizing that even though I had a bad day, if I was able to find one thing that I was grateful for yeah that was a good day and my motto is make it a great day because we're the ones that make that choice even though someone you know might hit you accidentally or something like that are we really going to let that ruin our day no we have a choice to make it a great day yeah and I appreciate you always sharing that because I know like I used to say to you have a great day and you're like I will I'm gonna make it a great day right
00:13:33
Speaker
And I do appreciate that. Like, um because we do have that choice and it is good to look for the good in everything that's going on around us. And I mean, my motto, I think, Russell Dickerson song, you know, it's a good day to have a great day, baby.
00:13:48
Speaker
And I sing that all the time. And it's just like, puts a little extra pep in your stem. So did you know that I sing too? You do? I do. Yes. Learn something new all the time. No, in my VIP group that I have for Facebook.
00:14:03
Speaker
um I actually get on there sometimes and sing karaoke. Oh, how fun. What's your favorite song? Um, my favorite song is Summertime by Ella Fitzgerald.
00:14:14
Speaker
Okay, very good. you want to give us a little, you know, bar of it right now? If not, you don't have to be on the spot. I just thought that'd be fun. No, it's okay. Hang on. Let me just think.
00:14:26
Speaker
Okay. Summertime.
00:14:42
Speaker
the cotton
00:14:48
Speaker
I love it. I love bursting out into songs, so it's so fun.
00:14:54
Speaker
i was like, did I remember those lyrics? I don't know if I did because I went out on the spot. so Well, guess what? I don't know the words to the song, so... Sounded great, though.
00:15:04
Speaker
I love it, Jess. Thank you. Thank you. You're welcome. You're welcome. So isn't it just so fun? Laughter is just such a great medicine. And I sort of said to somebody today, they're just like, you know, how are you doing? How are things going along? And I'm just kind of like, I don't know.
00:15:22
Speaker
I'm kind of just in a in a law right now and feeling like I'm having a hard time hearing or feeling like where I'm to go and what I'm to do next. But I'm just like, oh, just leading the way by laughter at the moment.
00:15:33
Speaker
So that's who we are. Have you seen a thing that's actually called laughter therapy? I think that I posted it on my stories before, but you actually start and you're like, okay, repeat after me.
00:15:46
Speaker
Ha. Ha. hu ha ha And then you go. See? And so, yes, it's like a euphoric kind of thing, you know?
00:15:59
Speaker
Absolutely. It just kind of clears the space and gets away all the like nervous jitters and things in your belly. And yes yes, because I was very nervous to do this and I'm very relaxed right now. So thanks for letting me sing.
00:16:12
Speaker
Oh, you're so welcome. You're so welcome. It's so fun. So let me ask a question since we have in here

Embracing Vulnerability and Personal Growth

00:16:19
Speaker
in a little bit. What advice would you give to somebody who feels trapped inside of their self-doubt right now?
00:16:26
Speaker
from your experience? From my experience, um I guess I would give the advice that it may not feel, you may feel like that now, but I can promise you if you really want to not feel that way and you put the work into yourself, you can get out of that little box.
00:16:57
Speaker
You can step outside of your box. Yeah, it goes back to giving yourself permission, right? Yes. Yeah. Yep. Because we can choose to continue to stay trapped um or stay inside of it because a lot of times that feels easy, even though it's terribly hard to stay in it as well.
00:17:15
Speaker
It's hard to admit our defeat of like, okay, if I step out of this, I have to admit that I was doing something, you know, that might not have been the best for me. Not necessarily wrong. It could be in somebody's eyes.
00:17:26
Speaker
But Stepping out, that's where the key to winning is then, right? Being vulnerable. You hear that all the time. In order to find who we truly are and to live to who we are meant to be, we do have to be vulnerable and put ourselves out here and and understand that it's not everybody has to understand what's going on, right? It only needs to make sense to you.
00:17:50
Speaker
Yes, yeah, and you need to give yourself grace yeah for that as well because we're our worst enemies. I mean, I can't tell you how many times, you know, I've beat myself up, but just being in the different mindset that I have for the last year and a half has just been amazing for me to turn all of that around.
00:18:12
Speaker
And it's been a long journey to do that, but i was in it, and i'm in it to win it. I love it. I love it. It's not like, no, that's a minute to win it at the game. I was just like, isn't that kind of

Role and Leadership in Green Compass

00:18:25
Speaker
like the game?
00:18:25
Speaker
But my mind, I tell my husband all the time, I'm like that book, you know, the children's book, if you give a mouse a cookie, and then it reminds you of something else and you go and that's totally how my brain works.
00:18:40
Speaker
See, we're giving away little secrets about ourselves today, are we not? ah Yeah. Yeah. Oh, my. So you say, like, you're really involved with your Green Compass. um How, like, have you if somebody else wanted to get involved in that, how would somebody want, you know, be able to get involved or to know more about what the company that's helped get to you to where you are?
00:19:01
Speaker
They could, you know, contact me um and I could share the story, the Green Compass story. um Which that story in itself is absolutely beautiful. i mean, the company has been around for six years.
00:19:16
Speaker
Okay. It started out with a mother who was suffering with postpartum. And her brother told her about CBD. And... um she tried cbd but she was finding that there was a lot of unclean dirty cbd out there so she decided um along with her husband her brother and two sixth generation sweet potato farmers um to create green compass because she wanted to make sure that whatever people put into their body they knew what they were putting into their body it was clean
00:19:51
Speaker
It was USDA organic and they're a very transparent company. um The only thing that they do third party is um they have like a QR code on every single one of their products and you can actually scan it with your phone.
00:20:08
Speaker
and it takes you to a certificate of analysis. So if that's something that someone is passionate about doing, they just contact me and, you know, I give them the information that they need. We have a chat.
00:20:21
Speaker
um They just ah redid the commission um to make it a lot easier for people stepping into the company. um Basically you get a link and you earn, you don't have like a set amount.
00:20:37
Speaker
Um, Yeah, it's been an amazing journey, like I said. And when I told the person that got me to join, I'm not going to build a team.
00:20:50
Speaker
And like I said, now I have 15 people underneath me. Chris is one of them. Hey, we got to start somewhere, right? yeah And Chris and I do like in-person events around the area. And, you know, we just talk about things.
00:21:06
Speaker
the hope of of hemp and functional mushrooms and how it benefits. Very nice. But then it's, but it's so much deeper than that, you know, it's the story and being you and being here and having that ability to still connect. I mean, so it's definitely so much deeper.
00:21:24
Speaker
It is. It's been a beautiful journey. And I'm so glad that I said yes. It took a while for me to say yes, because I've never done any kind of direct sales in my life ever.
00:21:37
Speaker
um But like I said, I was just so, so... um what's the word I'm looking for? um Just in awe of what the products did to me, did for me that I just couldn't help but join myself and share.
00:21:54
Speaker
So, Love it. Love it. What other like aspirations and things do you have planned for the future?

Cherishing the Present and Future Dreams

00:22:00
Speaker
It's always fun. Part of our gratitude, right? To welcome things in that we're are grateful for that hasn't even happened yet. So do you have, you know, any certain other dreams or any aspirations you're reaching towards right now?
00:22:12
Speaker
I do. um I actually, for my vision board, I actually envisioned a house in the country where Um, and near like a crick, I say crick, I know you're supposed to say creek, but I say crick.
00:22:26
Speaker
Um, ah but, um, and just like out in the middle of nowhere, um building the house with Chris, um, you know, seeing my grandchildren, know, running down the driveway, all happy to see me and stuff like that.
00:22:43
Speaker
you know, for me right now, my aspirations and dreams is to just, um, live every day like it's my last day.
00:22:55
Speaker
so it's so true. Learning to be in the present. and not being so caught up of the what ifs and where we're gonna go next. And I mean, it's important to dream or I wouldn't have asked you the question, because right, it does keep us kind of focused on what we're at, but not being so wrapped up in what the details of that is going to look like and how quickly things are gonna happen. Because if we rush it, we miss so many beautiful things that are happening right in front of us.
00:23:21
Speaker
um And we do. And, you know, I've been in this darkness almost all of my life. So for me to finally live in the light every day is special to me. And they what do they say? They say, like, the present is a is a gift. Right?
00:23:36
Speaker
Yeah. right i mean I guess maybe that's why they call them presents then, right? I mean, you just don't think, I mean, you think about it If you're like, oh,
00:23:48
Speaker
I don't know about you, but I like, oh, aha moment. Absolutely. Absolutely. So if you could go back and give your younger self one piece of advice, what do you think it would be?
00:24:00
Speaker
I would tell them that they're loved no matter what anyone says or however they make them feel. That's good. and And then I would give her a hug.
00:24:13
Speaker
hello I love that. I know even in you know, when you think back through our stories, a lot of times why us women or, I mean, and men as well, but more so women, because we're so hard on ourselves that if we really sit back and look through all the hardness and the things that we've gone through, when it comes back to the core level, it's we've been looking for love all along.
00:24:37
Speaker
Right. yeah so And I did something a while ago um because I am a survivor of of suicide.
00:24:49
Speaker
um I have a semicolon butterfly on my wrist. And the semicolon, as you know, ah stands for my story goes on. and the butterfly represents transformation from my story going on.
00:25:05
Speaker
And probably about a month ago, i added the little leaf. and the reason why my story goes on is because of plant medicine.
00:25:18
Speaker
I love it. I love it. And butterflies mean new life and new beginning as well. Yes. Right? Because you're given that opportunity. Yeah. That's really beautiful. so I guess then, you know, my last question I have just because i I mean, we don't need to pile on upon this because it's been

The Ripple Effect of Helping Others

00:25:35
Speaker
a beautiful story. And like I said, I'm really glad that you're here to be able to share and give that hope and light to somebody else that might, you know, need to hear that today. Because I've learned along the way um from other people, if we can just light one person's candle, right, then that they light the next. It takes the load off of us feeling like, hey, we want to help change the world. But if we can just do it one person at a time.
00:25:57
Speaker
It's been an amazing journey. so Yeah, absolutely. um One of the things that I always say, if anyone comments, you know, your your story is inspiring.
00:26:08
Speaker
I say, if I can help one person, then I've done what I've set out to do. Yeah. Absolutely. So with that, and you're having some final words of encouragement, what what else do you do you have anything else that do you want to share with the with the audience and with our listeners that they can take away with them and they can be like, you know what Des shared with me today?
00:26:32
Speaker
I think the the most that I want people to understand is they're never alone. They're never alone. even though they may feel alone, there is always someone out there that is struggling too.
00:26:47
Speaker
And it It could be like a look on on the street to a stranger and just a smile because you see that they're having a bad day.
