High School Reflections and Personal Growth

00:02:34
Speaker
Clifton. Welcome.
00:02:35
Speaker
Well, thank you for the introduction, first things first. And most importantly, thank you for having me on your show. I'm excited to have this conversation. Yes, absolutely. I love when others can come and share.
00:02:47
Speaker
You know, they might have been a moment in time, didn't feel like they had things together. And then they had those great aha moments and able to transform and just show other people the possibility that is on the other side when they give themselves the chance.
00:03:00
Speaker
Right, for sure. Absolutely. So you want to take us back to your roots. Clifton, who were you back in high school? Who was I back in high school? out The best way I could describe who I was in high school was just...
00:03:14
Speaker
I was just someone who was obsessed with just playing basketball and just trying to, you know, course, get the perfect grades necessary to where I can graduate at the time in high school. And it's it's crazy. Looking back at, you know, my time at 4-H Moody High School here in Corpus Christi, Texas, I kind of went through some interesting phases, you know, just You know, being like the freshman, you know, fresh out of middle school, like, hey, I want to try to figure myself out in high school, you know, going through the phases of like, you know, figuring out who to hang out with, who not to hang out with.
00:03:51
Speaker
But I always was like, I was always that the interesting guy in high school because I was always known, Danielle, for everything. being cool with like, of course, the athletes and the jocks being cool with, you know, of course, the cheerleaders and the dancers. But I was also very cool with all the the smart kids as well because as you just mentioned in the intro, of course how I was the only person in my family that graduated with permanent honor roll on my mom's side and my dad's side. And they always stressed the importance of you know education, getting good grades, all that stuff. So it was kind of like me me getting to experience all these different worlds and all these different personalities and different characters all while
00:04:36
Speaker
Playing basketball and using it as kind of like my escape haven just to, course, you know, grasp towards and just enjoy the moments of it. Like ah so I think about it from time to time. If I can go back to like my senior year in high school during that particular time in basketball season, I can honestly say that was probably...
00:04:57
Speaker
the greatest year that I could honestly, I honestly have because I didn't have to like worry about much. All I had to do was worry about showing up for practice, showing up for join up for all the tournaments and everything. But within that timeframe, it taught me the importance of, you know, teamwork. It taught me, of course, you know, looking back at it, discipline, you know, sportsmanship, of course, what you learn within every single sport, like,
00:05:26
Speaker
No matter if you win, no matter if you lose, always put your best effort forward and whatever happens happens. I re I didn't realize I was learning that in that particular moment in time, because I was so caught up in the moment of just, you know, living life as a high school kid, of course, but looking back at it now, I feel like that's what I gained the most out of my experience in high school. It was, it was some fun times without question, but Who was I as a high school kid? I was just like your typical high school athlete trying to make it to college playing, you know, some form of college basketball, if not trying to get some sort of academic scholarship. That would be the best way to describe that period in time.
00:06:11
Speaker
All right. Yeah. and you just never know what you're going to go through

Career Transition: From Various Jobs to Pharmacy Technician

00:06:14
Speaker
that's going to help be that framework and that foundation, you know, as you, you know, grow up and stuff. Because it looks like it's always just a fun time. I'm still a kid. I'm learning.
00:06:23
Speaker
But it sounds like you were very observant, though, too, and just mindful of what was going on around you to, you know, help give you those developmental skills that were really important to get you where you are.
00:06:34
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I still have dreams from time to time every now and then like flashback to those moments in high school. And I feel like looking back at it now, it kind of is kind of like teaching me lessons still within those dreams. that It's like those what if scenarios and just kind of painting the whole picture. It's crazy. Yeah.
00:06:57
Speaker
Well, you had mentioned, you know, when you had given me your bio and mentioned having a series of dead-end jobs. um What was the moment that you realized then that something had to change?
00:07:09
Speaker
The moment where something had to change, it was it was an interesting period because, as you mentioned, From 2014 to about 2016, that was like during the dead-end job phase, I guess you could say, because 2014, you know, I dropped out of college, which was Del Mar Community College, because during that time frame from like 2011 to 2014, I was trying so much, do you know, following my mom and my dad's footsteps with my mom being a nurse. And of course, I figured, why, I want to try that out first. That didn't work.
00:07:45
Speaker
You know, my dad being a teacher and a coach going into kinesiology, that route, that didn't work out. So I figured, you know, I would drop out and kind of create my own lane and kind of find myself and create my own path. And, you know, I worked, you know, for a moving company. I worked for a couple of call centers and Again, me being as observant as I was, you know I picked up little certain tips and tricks and traits within each job that I had that, ironically enough, feeds into my overall business and everything that I'm doing within my entrepreneurship journey. Of course, I didn't realize that I would need it at the time, but i it all came in handy. Yeah.
00:08:29
Speaker
Overall, you know going through all those jobs, with the moment that I feel like I needed to change something, and this is kind of a big part of it is, of course, that one wanted me to try to change something for the better was obviously towards the end of 2014. That's when I got into the relationship with the woman who I've been with since that very moment to this very day. That was a big part of it.
00:08:53
Speaker
Another part of it was just you know trying to you know do better for myself, and that way I can be able to provide for her, that way we can have our own place, which what we currently have to to this very day. And it was when I was working at Cars Delivery Service, which is a delivery service company here in Corpus Christi, Texas, back in 2016, one day when I was working there in particular,
00:09:18
Speaker
That and on top of a com um's conversation I had with my mom where she was trying to help me try to figure things out and stuff, she suggested that I go to a vocational trade school here in Corpus Christi, Texas called Southern Career Institute, which provides like, you know,
00:09:35
Speaker
different programs like medical assistant, billing and coding, pharmacy technician. But she said specifically, you should try to go and be a pharmacy technician. I mean, you never know what can happen out of it.
00:09:47
Speaker
And I didn't take it as serious at the time when we were talking about it, but it was at the back of my mind. Uh-huh. the back of my mind to the forefront of my mind one day working at cars delivery service I'll never forget it it was like during the summertime it was hot doing deliveries and stuff and I just thought man I should take up what my mom told me as far as being a pharmacy technician because at that time I was starting to rediscover myself as far as the importance of your health and your overall well-being.
00:10:19
Speaker
So I figured I would understand a little bit of the conventional medicine side of things on how it impacts your health. And I was so like mesmerized by it at the time. And because it kind of fed into everything that I was currently doing right now.
00:10:34
Speaker
So that's kind of the moment, the turning point moment where I was like, you know what, I'm going to just dive in head first. I'm going to go to Southern Career Institutes, you know, give it a shot, see what happens.
00:10:45
Speaker
I completed the nine month program at the time. A pharmacy technician got certified on the through the Texas State Board of Pharmacy and on a national level. And that's kind of like what opened up the door as far as, you know, beginning my journey as a certified pharmacy technician. And a lot of people don't notice about the journey, Danielle, and i haven't told many people this.
00:11:07
Speaker
When I literally tried to apply at Walgreens, this was like in 2017, you know, when you got to go through like the application process and then you got to go through this little questionnaire and all that stuff. I didn't take it as serious or when I was applying, I was just kind of skimming through it.
00:11:24
Speaker
But there's a certain questionnaire you have to take. And I kind of didn't pass in and it and kind of locked me out from applying. for like about a good six to eight months. So there was like this little period where I was like in limbo and I had to wait for that to reset.

Pandemic Shift: From Pharmacy to Holistic Health

00:11:41
Speaker
And then I eventually reapplied and I eventually got into it after I took it more seriously and everything. So that was kind of a little bit of a hurdle that I had to jump over before I officially started.
00:11:55
Speaker
and A self-made hurdle. That's what I hear. I thought on that. but i But again, you know, you live and you learn, you learn from mistakes. And then next thing you know, fast forward, August 2018, after that stage of limbo, I started working as a pharmacy technician during that time.
00:12:16
Speaker
Yep. That's, that's kind of what, that's kind of what led to that particular turning point in me just wanting to just better myself, you know, try to get out of living with my parents, getting my own place and all that kind of stuff. And that's,
00:12:31
Speaker
that That was kind of was like, okay, I need to really start taking things serious was that particular moment. It was 2016, summer of 2016, actually. i mean, it sounds like it goes back to you've always had an interest for health, right? You said you were looking at nursing and then teaching with kinesiology and All of that stuff. So there was passion was still there, even though you chose to step away from it.
00:12:52
Speaker
But yeah when things are laid on your heart that you're supposed to be doing, they're going to keep showing up in different forms and different avenues and doors. And, you know, you have your own personal choice if you're going to choose to pick them up. And yeah it's really cool that you've dabbled in a little bit of all of it. So.
00:13:08
Speaker
yeah So then so you're this, you know, pharmacy tech, but then you're like, OK, forget this. I'm done. I think I want to take things a little more holistic and start an entrepreneurship.
00:13:19
Speaker
So, you know, what encouraged you then to make that kind of pivot? Yeah. the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. that's really what That's really what did it for me. and and that's what And that's what honestly did it for a lot of people because, you know, don't get me wrong. I enjoyed working as a pharmacy technician from about 2018 to 2020. And then once the pandemic took place, and then that's when they started implementing all of these COVID-19 protocols. And we had to wear masks. We had to get vaccinated in order to keep working. And all of that went on, Danielle. It kind of sucked the joy out of me being a pharmacy technician to the point where, you know, that that was that was a big part of it. Another part of it was, you know, dealing with just being like so overwhelmed working in the pharmacy because i don't think people realize, you know,
00:14:17
Speaker
how mentally and emotionally overwhelmed you could be from working with ah in a pharmacy. And then you factor in, of course, not having enough employees to work beyond the pharmacy, you know, working longer hours, you know, not having as much time off, you know, it got to the point where things were spiraling out of control to where something had to change.
00:14:40
Speaker
And then, of course, Those two factors were a part of it. But the third most important factor that made me really want to transition into more of a hol holistic approach is just seeing all the patients, all the regular patients coming in.
00:14:55
Speaker
not in the best mood because they were either at doctor's offices all day or they were at the hospital all day or if they were on the phone fighting with their insurance companies, all of those things.
00:15:08
Speaker
And then I just thought to myself just randomly, you know, whatever happened to the holistic approach, whatever happened to the natural remedies as far as like, you know, taking care of yourself before you have to go to doctor's offices. Yes.

Launching Health Fitness Wealth Business

00:15:24
Speaker
pharmacies I mean, you can attest to this, Danielle. You're a nurse. So it's like we deal with enough stuff as it is from an internal standpoint to where it's like if it's like a do or die situation to where it's like, OK, I need to go see a doctor or I need to go see, a course of course, a pharmacy, whatever, to get like.
00:15:46
Speaker
antibiotics for infections or like a life or death situation okay fine I'm perfectly okay with that but if you're rushing to the doctor's office just because you have like a cold or a sore throat or a bad cough or something something you could take care of literally from the comforts of your own home with grandma's natural remedies that's my only argument let's give the doctors and nurses and pharmacists and pharmacy technicians a little bit of a break so they can breathe a little bit. That's my only argument.
00:16:20
Speaker
And it's funny because i had this conversation on my own podcast with what our very own naturopath doctor, one of the very few naturopath doctors we have here in Corpus Christi, Texas, Dr. LaDonna Rocha is her name.
00:16:34
Speaker
We had this exact conversation, the importance of balancing out conventional medicine with the natural holistic approach. And she said something in particular that stuck with me that I like to tell people all the time, you know.
00:16:48
Speaker
Every other country other than America literally practices 50% conventional medicine, 50% natural holistic approaches. The U.S. is the only one who doesn't do that.
00:17:01
Speaker
And a lot of it has to do with the influence that big pharma has, of course, and on ah you know the medical industry. and how they, you know, look out, they pay for the medical schools and all that. There's a whole rabbit hole you can go down just within that alone. But just me going back to you just having that realization of, you know what, if I can't, I can't help ah all the people how I would want to help them working behind a pharmacy, why not take matters into my own hands and create a business in regards to, you know,
00:17:34
Speaker
helping people establish healthier habits with a holistic approach. That way they can take control of their destiny and basically be their own boss, which is kind of like the health and fitness side of things.
00:17:47
Speaker
And then that kind of feeds into the wealth and business side of things because i always like to say health is wealth. yeah I mean, what's the use of you know chasing a next form of success the next form of the next form of paycheck, the next amount of money or whatever if you're not even healthy enough to reap the benefits and enjoy it?
00:18:08
Speaker
And that's kind What led to like the origin of my company, health, fitness, wealth, business, incorporated was that exact vision. And at the same time, of course, obviously a dollar putting away money aside while I was working at Walgreens as a pharmacy technician to where, where I knew that the time would would come to take the leap of faith. It was time.
00:18:31
Speaker
And that time actually came in about September 2022. And that's when I figured, you know what? Enough

Holistic Health and Lifestyle Advice

00:18:38
Speaker
is enough. I'm tired of being overwhelmed. I'm tired of dealing going into work, dealing with shorthanded staff who didn't know that they what they were doing half of the time.
00:18:47
Speaker
And it's like, you know what? I'm just going to take my own leap of faith and I'm going right into entrepreneurship. Hence, the birth of HFWB came, Danielle. Awesome, awesome.
00:18:58
Speaker
Some yeah, that's really exciting, you know, but you're so right in like preventative health. We don't speak about that enough anymore, because it is led by big pharma. And we're just like, Oh, well, here's a med, this will treat this. Oh, you know, this is how you do that.
00:19:12
Speaker
But yes, we really should have a say in ourselves and learn to be advocates for ourselves. Yeah, we're not we're we're we're only addressing the symptoms. We're not addressing the root cause. And if we just absolutely time to look at ourselves in the mirror and address the root cause, where it's like, I don't care what anybody says. There's not no pill in the world that's going to really like address the root cause. And the real real way you can address the root cause, at least from what I've noticed, is just making those lifestyle habit changes, you know, having the proper nutrition plan in order, getting the adequate amount of exercise that you need, you know, making time for like, you know, self care practices, such as having a moment of silence, whether it's prayer or meditation or both, you know, practicing, you know, journal entries, for example, to course,
00:20:03
Speaker
get you know express how you feel as far as your thoughts, your emotions, recapping the day, you know writing down what you're grateful for, practicing gratitude, which feeds into the mindfulness practice.
00:20:16
Speaker
you know, reading books, that way you can give your so your brain like mental a mental workout or I like to call mental gymnastics and doing doing things like that, you know, and obviously your affirmations and visualizations, all of those things together, you're literally saving yourself, Danielle, and you're creating like what they call the savers method, which is what I've learned tremendously from reading The Miracle Morning by Al-Haraad, literally at the beginning of the pandemic.
00:20:46
Speaker
And that's kind of been like the key ingredient that kind of like shaped me towards, you know, approaching things more holistically and more natural as far as just healing myself from within and just.
00:20:59
Speaker
taking time to just, you know, take care of myself because no one's going to do it for you, but me why not dedicate at least the first couple of hours of your day, checking in with yourself before you check in with the world around you. If that makes any sense. 100% get up before everybody else does and let your feet hit the ground and say a few prayers and get yourself moving. Oh yes.
00:21:24
Speaker
Great way to start the day. I love it. Yeah. before somebody then who because you know you're giving all this great advice on how to get back in touch with yourself and to keep help yourself remain grounded what's some advice that you would give to someone who then wants to make a change but they're like oh my goodness i totally feel suck i don't even know how i would move forward That's a very good question.
00:21:47
Speaker
The best thing that I would tell that person is that it kind of feeds into what I kind of just said. Nobody is going to do it for you but you. So you might as well take that first step in that leap of faith and just block out all the noise and just...
00:22:06
Speaker
you know, go for it more so than anything, because what do you have to lose? Because ah that people like to say, i mean, we hear this all the time, Danielle, there's winners and there's losers.
00:22:18
Speaker
Honestly, I don't look at life as taking losses. I look at it as you're either going to win or you're either going to learn something new, which is help you win in the long run. So worst case scenario, I mean, hey, nobody's going to do it for you, but you. And at the same time,
00:22:35
Speaker
to be is to do if you want to become something in life you just have to you know put your mind to it and do it and I kind i call that kind of staring at the world through the rearview mirror it's like you know what you have to do regardless of what Your vision is your goal is the next step is all you have to do is just train your mind to do it.
00:22:59
Speaker
That way the body can follow through to do it. You know, the importance of that mind body connection. And then once you do that. on top of you know having that spark within your overall soul and spirit that fires you up from within, you can literally accomplish anything and everything that you set your

Overcoming Fear: Insights from "Fear Not" Poetry Book

00:23:19
Speaker
sights on, if anything, Danielle.
00:23:21
Speaker
That's what would tell someone who's listening. Love it. I love it. I felt that was very perfectly. um You can ask because I don't believe there's losers either because if you just allow yourself to take the chance and it doesn't matter if the arrows are all over the dartboard, um you know, or that target, you at least attempted to put that arrow on there. Wouldn't you rather stare at ones that are all over the place than to stare at a Empty target. I just saw that today and actually shared it on Instagram um because yeah I had seen somebody had posted that and it makes you stop in your tracks and go 100 percent like how you're not going to lose.
00:23:58
Speaker
You just have to try and then it opens the door for something else. Yeah, and it's funny, you know, people were always taught to, you know, like ready, aim and fire. But sometimes you just have to start firing.
00:24:11
Speaker
And then, you know, once you start firing, then aim for what it is particularly that you're trying to fire for. And then next thing you know, when you know from within that you're ready, you'll pretty much be ready.
00:24:24
Speaker
Yeah. Well, I think this goes in great because you're just, you know, you had mentioned you are a self-published author. i am, yes. You have a new book of poetry about fear coming out here soon, right? Or is it already available?
00:24:37
Speaker
It's actually already available. know there's audio, but for those who are who who are listening to audio version, I'm basically holding up a copy of my book called Fear Not, which is basically, i got and and i told I told you about this before. Yes.
00:24:54
Speaker
ah My poetry book Fear Not is based off of overcoming the six ghosts of fear. And for those who don't know what the six ghosts of fear are, it's basically poverty.
00:25:05
Speaker
criticism, ill health, you know loss of love for someone, um old age, and death. Those are basically the six ghosts of fear. And for those who are wondering where I got that from, I basically got that from being influenced by the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill for all of your listeners out there. Definitely read that book. That's a game changer within itself. And that's where I kind of got the concept of, you know, this the my poetry book. And I figured, you know, we all have dealt with poverty. We've all dealt with some form of criticism, ill health, you know, losing a loved one. You know, we all have this fear of, you know, growing old for particular reason. And we, most importantly, we also have this fear of death. i mean, we all do, but at the same time,
00:25:56
Speaker
Within each, I basically decided to attack each ghost of fear in the form of poem, basically breaking it down as far as the definition of each of them, my overall perspective on them in the form of poetry, you know, because I feel like that's one of the best ways to kind of express yourself to a certain degree.
00:26:15
Speaker
And then, you know, just kind of leaving a gem at the end of each poem if you really pay attention towards the end of, hey, You can overcome poverty this way. You can overcome the fear of growing old this way.
00:26:29
Speaker
You can ah overcome the fear of death by looking at it from this perspective. And that's kind of like the concept I want people to get whenever they do purchase the book on Amazon, which is if it's available on Amazon, my book, Fear Not.
00:26:44
Speaker
um That's kind of the overall concept of of the book is just, you know, telling people, hey, fear is nothing but an illusion. All it is is false evidence appearing real.

And at the same time, it's just another obstacle and trial and tribulation that's holding you back from reaching your full potential. So let's just overcome this poverty, overcome all this the ghosts of fear that I'm in, and let's use this to where we can rise above it all and continue to grow through what we go through, find room for improvement, and just continue to evolve physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually into a better version of ourselves. That's really what I hope that all of your listeners and anyone
00:27:28
Speaker
who is interested in buying this book, fear not my poetry book available on Amazon. I hope they grasp that exact message. I love it. I love it. and And understanding that we, when you say that it's something false, it's a lie, that we hold that power to put that down. That nobody holding that over us, right? That we have that power to put it down and to be able to step through whatever that next adventure that we're looking to.
00:27:56
Speaker
Yes, for sure. Because we all we all fear something. We've all had some point to where we have some sort of fear for something. So it's like, you know, we just have to learn how we can conquer that fear from within ourselves.
00:28:11
Speaker
And because if... if Because if we conquer it from within ourselves, then we'll conquer it, whatever is around us that's causing this fear. Because what surrounds us, what's going on as far as our surroundings, it's usually what impacts us on how we feel as far as our thoughts, our emotions, our desires, our belief systems, all that kind of thing. All those kind

Formula for Success: Commitment, Consistency, Urgency

00:28:35
Speaker
of things. And it um it impacts on how we react to everything in life.
00:28:39
Speaker
Right. Yeah, because it's all connected. Yes, it is. So I guess then, you know, with all of that great wisdom that you provide, is there anything else that you feel that you would want to share with somebody who is still scared saying, but yes, you've said all of this, but you know, I'm still stuck. Like, what do you want to tell them right now? That would be like, listen, this is really what you're going to do. And if you take this seriously, you're going to, you're going to shoot for the stars and get there.
00:29:07
Speaker
oh um So it just comes down to you know what what is your endgame? what is What are you going to do to achieve that endgame? And I talk about this actually in my first book that I ever wrote called What's Wealth Without Work, which is the first book that I've ever written and self-published. That's also available on Amazon as well.
00:29:28
Speaker
I talk about the importance of an ultimate success formula, you know, setting your sights on something as far as like your vision, your goal, or whatever it is that you're trying to achieve. And just, you know, sprinkling in, you know, some ambition, your skills, your overall step-by-step process and kind of mixing it all together, you know, figuring out what works, what doesn't work. And then once you figure out what does work,
00:29:55
Speaker
continue the process of just remaining committed to what works and just continuing to repeat that process over and over again in a form of consistency because you figured out what worked for you in the beginning. And that's why...
00:30:09
Speaker
you know It's important. First and foremost, it's 100% effort, and that 100% effort is divided up in two ways. You've got to be committed to whatever it is that you're trying to go after. You can't half-step your way through it because you know there isn't no half-stepping, and at the same time, there isn't no future in your fronting, as I would like to say it.
00:30:34
Speaker
But at the same time, you know, realizing what you need to be committed to and most importantly, just remaining as consistent as possible to it. And that's where a lot of people fail at. They fail at the consistency aspect of it.
00:30:48
Speaker
You know, they'll contemplate something, then they'll begin the preparation of wanting to do something, and then they'll start off fine. But then obstacle, you know, that life likes to throw in front of you, throws them off the road, and next thing you know, they're driving on the grass or in the dirt, and they forgot how they they forgot how to get back to the road. And then by the time they get back to the road, they lose all the drive and all the focus. They lose all the sense of urgency of trying to get that vision, that mission, that sense of purpose of whatever they're trying to go after done.
00:31:22
Speaker
So if anything, I would tell people this. One, you got to remain committed in whatever it is that you're going to do. Number two, you got to remain as consistent as possible.
00:31:34
Speaker
You can to it. And at the same time, number three, you got to get it done, you know, with a little bit of a sense of urgency. You got to figure out what's important, what's not.
00:31:44
Speaker
or You got to figure out what's urgent and what's not urgent. And once you separated all those things into those four different categories, I promise you, everybody, the picture is going to get more so clear to you.
00:31:58
Speaker
It's going to get so big as far as looking at the big picture that, like they say, a picture's worth a thousand words. You're going to be able to hear all those words. at the same time within that exact picture. So stay committed, stay consistent, do it with a sense of urgency, whatever your goal, your vision, your plan is in life.
00:32:19
Speaker
And I guarantee you, you're going to make something out of nothing every single time.
