Speaker
Scarlett also hosts her own podcast, Empowered and Abundant. So be sure to check out episode nine, how she created and and life. Stop with the either or Why not have them both?
00:02:09
Speaker
So i'm really excited that she's here today because she stepped out sharing herself to allow others then to live their best life also. So welcome, Scarlett. hi there. Thank you so much for having me today. i am super excited for this conversation.
00:02:23
Speaker
Yes, we're so happy to have you here. So we'll just jump right in. I really love your brand name, The Biz Hippie. So how did you come up with that? And what does that represent for you?
00:02:34
Speaker
Yes, thank you so much. So how I came up with it was really my own personal journey of self-discovery and personal growth and really taking these two aspects or two sides of myself, the biz side and also the hippie side and discovering and finding balance between both of these aspects of myself. I used to be all in the biz mode, like high achiever, perfectionist. at my In my old career as a restaurant manager, I would wear four inch heels and blazers and a full face of makeup and false eyelashes, which is kind of crazy. Like if if anyone's familiar with me now, I'm like barefoot outside and flowy pants is kind of the vibe.
00:03:16
Speaker
So I like went really hard on the like overly masculine biz action taker mode. And then I discovered this whole other side of myself, which was so like free and hippie. And I got really into yoga, became a yoga instructor, became a life coach, started traveling and attending retreats, became a Reiki practitioner, and just really started saying yes to like everything I could get my hands on that really lit me up.
00:03:41
Speaker
And I like went full on hippie mode. And then through the years of running my business, I found that place in the middle where I could really get the benefits and the balance of both the biz and

Moments of Self-Discovery & Happiness

00:03:53
Speaker
the hippie. And I also really bring this into work that I do with my clients of how do we find this balance of like that masculine action taker and that feminine flow and bring this together so we can really live our best lives and find that alignment in the middle.
00:04:09
Speaker
Yes, yes. Was there something like a particular moment that you could remember that you're like, oh my goodness, this doesn't feel comfortable anymore. I think that there's something so much more out there for me that made you went, yeah, it's time to explore for that.
00:04:22
Speaker
Yeah, there was definitely lots of small moments that happened. Like first I hit a rock bottom and that was pretty aggressive. Like that was a pretty smack in the face moment. But then after that, as I was really discovering who I am and you know what I wanted, it was so many small moments of peeling these layers away and discovering like, who am I? And really, what do I want? And it was kind of challenging to uncover at first because I had been so used to living my life based on should and like conforming myself and my identity based on this idea of success. And so piecing apart what
00:05:02
Speaker
what were the parts of me that were just like conformed or created to be successful versus what are the parts of me that genuinely really enjoy things and want to live life differently? And in one small moment, it's such a like silly story, but I will never forget it is I, ah it was like a nice day, summer, sunny, and I opened my living room window and I stuck my head out the window and I was like, oh my gosh,
00:05:32
Speaker
this is amazing. Like this is the best thing ever. Like I'm so excited by it. It's like I'm inside, but I'm outside. And listen, if you've never done this, like you got to do it It's really cool. It's a different perspective on your house than you've ever seen. But in that moment, it was so significant to me because I was like,
00:05:50
Speaker
this is something that I just genuinely

Financial Empowerment Philosophy

00:05:53
Speaker
enjoy. It's not because someone told me to enjoy it or I should enjoy It it was just like, this genuinely feels a amazing. And yet it was so simple.
00:06:03
Speaker
Yeah. Well, we take those small things for granted, right Because we're always just looking for some really big aha moment. And open the window, put your head outside. Like that's exciting. Did you never not do that before or was this just new enlightening time of it? Well, I mean, in my life, I have done it before, but what's actually really interesting is one time I did it as a child and the window, and we used to live in a really old house in New Hampshire and it had very heavy windows and the window closed on my neck and I was literally guillotined. So it's kind of like interesting because it was like,
00:06:41
Speaker
healing that past trauma and being like, this is amazing and no longer having that same experience. Yeah, yeah. No fear with it and just trusted in the moment and went with it. I love it.
00:06:52
Speaker
Yeah. So you, your main passion now is though helping people with money. um What did your re if you don't mind asking, did you have a hard relationship with money that made you like, you know, I need to fix this, learned it and then be like, okay, I need to share it with others.
00:07:09
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. I think that it has my journey with money has definitely played a huge role in the work that I do. Interestingly, I've had a challenging but also good relationship with money in my life. It's kind of been polar.
00:07:24
Speaker
On the one hand, you can look from the outside and see all the ways that I've actually been very good and smart working. with money in my life. I opened my first savings account when I was seven. When I got my first like more solid job at 16, I put 70% of every paycheck away into savings. I opened credit cards at a young age. I was diligent with my bank account. I like saved 30,000 by the time I was 18 and like paid for college out of pocket, had no student loans. So like I was always smart with money, but at the same time,
00:07:58
Speaker
I didn't have a good relationship with money. And this really tied into this idea of success and perfectionism. And like, I'm chasing this finish line that I can never really get to. And money was driving me and pushing me to change how I lived my life. Like, and even affected

Understanding & Overcoming Scarcity Beliefs

00:08:15
Speaker
as a young adult, my career decisions and trying to make this choice and be like, how do I do it right? How do I make the most money? How do I find the most success?
00:08:24
Speaker
And so, especially when I decided two change my life path and choose to not do the successful thing, healing my relationship with money played a huge role in that. And then especially when I decided to start my coaching business, going so against the grain of traditional success, like money played a huge role in being able to make those decisions to invest in myself, to not find a traditional nine to five job, to go all in on my business, even when other people kind of thought I was crazy and my mom was telling me to get a real job.
00:09:00
Speaker
And then the same for my clients too. Like money plays such a huge role in being able to go all in on your business and then be successful in it and actually make money while doing it.
00:09:11
Speaker
Yeah, well, and we believe because there's a lot of limiting beliefs that sit around money, right? And the way that we look at it and not realizing that it's a currency, it's meant, we've talked, you know, to men to come and go and just benefit all of us around and there is more than enough.
00:09:27
Speaker
So what are some common limiting beliefs that you see with your coaches or, you know, other creative souls that you're working with that they seem to carry that you help them, you know, untangle? Yeah, in the work that I do, I teach my clients about what I call the three scarcity seeds.
00:09:43
Speaker
And these are the common scarce based beliefs that I see generally across the board. Some everybody can relate to some aspect of these three beliefs.
00:09:55
Speaker
And the first one is worthiness, like being worthy and deserving of receiving. And this can be money, but it can also show up in other forms, usually like love and attention or time and energy. So worthiness.
00:10:10
Speaker
The second one is not enoughness, thinking that there's not enough for me. There's not enough to go around. And sometimes these overlap, like the not enoughness and the worthiness, because it could also be like, I'm not enough. I'm not doing enough. I'm not good enough.
00:10:25
Speaker
And then the third one is what I call starving artist syndrome. And this is the idea of an either or life. Either i am in a job that I hate, but I'm making lots of money, or i am a starving artist and I'm fulfilled in my career, but I must be broke. And it's like we can only have one or the other, but we can't have both.
00:10:50
Speaker
And these are the three common scarce-based beliefs that really underpin most people's relationships with money. Yeah. And then when, so when you're talking with people and we start with that first one being their worthiness, why do you think so many people, especially women, you know, why do we, what does seem to be the common reason of why they so don't see themselves to be worthy in your opinion? Yeah.
00:11:14
Speaker
Yeah, I think there's a lot of reasons. I think one is the society that we live in really promotes the idea of earning things or like needing to work in order to be worthy and deserving. But I also think it really ties back to childhood. As a child, you have desires and wants and needs and they can't always be fulfilled or when you express those wants and needs your parents or the people that you grew up around will respond in certain ways to those wants and desires and needs and from the way that they respond you learn things you establish beliefs about the world and you also learn oh this is how I need to show up in order to get what I want, in order to be deserving of praise, in order to be worthy of getting love and attention.
00:12:02
Speaker
And so like for me in my um life, I learned going to school and being in an environment surrounded by authority. i learned that if I got good grades,
00:12:14
Speaker
people would treat me good, like especially the the teachers and the authorities that I was around. Like, oh, this is how I have to be behave in order to be successful. This is what I have to do in order to be liked.
00:12:25
Speaker
And so like on a foundational level, we're just trained like in In order to survive, we are trained to adapt our personalities, adapt our behaviors, change our responses in order to have our wants and desires and needs met. And because of this world that we live in, this instills the belief that we are inherently not deserving or worthy. But instead, we have to change or do something or act in some way in order to be to get the attention and love and support and time and energy and money that we desire.
00:13:01
Speaker
Yeah. And then to the point where just like, oh, it's just not worth it. It's too exhausting. You know, people aren't going to accept me anyway. And then that's where we're not, you know, um that we're not good enough and all of that good stuff comes together. so It's not a fun adventure and definitely more topics and talks of this needs to be shared. And so that's why we're really happy to have you here because, you know, as women, we hear it and we do it. And then we're like a few months later, we're right back into it. So the more often that we can kind of sprinkle this back in and just help people to truly see how valuable they are.
00:13:32
Speaker
so Yeah, ah exactly. Because a lot of these things, like they're very deeply ingrained too. And so it's not always enough to just like hear it once and then go on with your life because these are deeply ingrained patterns and you have to really get to the root cause life.
00:13:48
Speaker
Why do I have these scarcity seeds? Why do I have these scarce

Empowering Money Management Strategies

00:13:53
Speaker
based beliefs? Like what were the moments in time that really ingrained these in me and created this story and narrative? Yes, around money, but also around my self worth and the beliefs that I have around the world.
00:14:05
Speaker
100%. Yeah. So you're showing us that mindset is so important. So then when you say that you use tangible money strategies to help with our inner work, then can you give us some real examples of how you, you know, combine them for others to grow from?
00:14:18
Speaker
Yeah, exactly. Exactly. And this, again, comes back to like the narrative of the biz hippie. like You really need both aspects in order to get the total transformation and step into that rapid growth and expansion. And so when it comes to shifting your relationship with money, the mindset really is key. It's very important. It's really valuable, but it's also only half of the equation. The internal work of transforming your relationship with money requires both the tangible and the intangible. And so, yes, I help my clients to um unwrite their money story, shift their beliefs, shift their patterns, bring awareness to their current relationship with money. But part of how we do that is by learning to manage money.
00:15:02
Speaker
track and be in control of your finances and really tangibly see what's actually happening with my money. What choices and decisions am I making? How am I choosing to live my life?
00:15:16
Speaker
And how can I be more in control of actually how I use my money on a day-to-day basis? So I teach my clients how to build a financial blueprint.
00:15:27
Speaker
which is a tool for tracking and managing your money. It's similar to a budget, and yet it is different because a budget tells you what you can't do with your money. It's limiting and restricting. People try to make a budget. They're like, here's I'm going to follow. And then they like set it down for weeks or months, and they don't look at it again. And then they're like, oh, shit, like I didn't do that. Right.
00:15:51
Speaker
Like that's the relationship people have with a budget. Whereas a blueprint tells you what you can do with the money that you have. It's more empowering. It's more exciting. And it can even be fun when you learn how to do it in this format.
00:16:05
Speaker
Absolutely. So are there some mindset shifts that we can also go along with that? Like you could tell them now, hey, if you work on these things, this is going to help that healing journey to begin. Absolutely, yes, because they go hand in hand. The first is recognizing that you are in control of your money. And this is where the intangible ties in with the tangible, because you can think that to yourself.
00:16:31
Speaker
Because the thing is, you are in control of your money, even if it doesn't feel that way right now. Like, you are the one making choices and decisions with your money. Even if, like, it seems like it's outside circumstances, you are the one actively creating your life.
00:16:45
Speaker
So recognizing and instilling the belief of, I am the one in control. I'm the one in control of my life. I'm the one in control of my money. I'm the one that's creating And then pairing this with actually when you can see your money clearly and you can see where you're choosing to spend your money and the choices you're making, that's when you can recognize, oh, I'm the one in control of this and I can make choices and decisions to cut out these things that are less important to me and shift this money towards what is more important to me and what I want to prioritize. and what I want to value and even use your money intentionally to actually manifest and create the vision of the life you want to live.
00:17:24
Speaker
Love it. Love it. So for those ones who love, you know, their work, but they feel that you know, it doesn't support them financially. What is one message that you would want to speak directly to them today?
00:17:37
Speaker
Yeah, I really believe that it's possible to find this middle ground where you're able to support yourself financially and enjoy the work that you do.
00:17:48
Speaker
And this can also be a transition with multiple phases. yes And so it can be running a business, doing the work you love, and financially supporting yourself with that business. That is what I am currently doing right now. And I know it's possible and there's tons of people doing that.
00:18:07
Speaker
And at the same time... it can be a journey to get there. It took me multiple years to be financially supported with my business. So the other piece of this is how do you support yourself financially in a way that feels aligned and satisfies your need for financial stability and safety, d but it doesn't feel like it's sucking out your soul. And this is something that I teach my clients how to do, which is to find aligned income opportunities. And it might it doesn't have to be the soul-sucking nine to five that's not in alignment for you. And this is another area where having awareness around your money is so valuable because when you can see your money clearly, you know exactly how much you need in order to make

Financial Risk-Taking & Business Investment

00:18:56
Speaker
ends meet. And then you can make choices about where you're going to get that money from and how you can free up more time and energy to go all in on your business and work towards the other money-making opportunities that you want to create in the future.
00:19:12
Speaker
And so what this can look like is once you see your numbers clearly, maybe you only need an extra 500 a month or maybe a thousand a month in order to get get by. And then you could get that from different aligned part-time jobs that feel like a good fit for you. And don't take all your time and energy to get that amount of money that you need.
00:19:37
Speaker
And then you can spend the rest of your time and energy with these other money-making opportunities that feel more in alignment for you. It doesn't really have to be either or, like either I'm all in on a nine to five job and I'm miserable or I'm all in on my business and I'm risking it all.
00:19:52
Speaker
Like there is so many middle ground options, but it's so much easier for you to take advantage of that when you have a really clear picture of your money and it becomes a conscious choice and decision about what you're choosing to prioritize in terms of the time, energy and money exchange. Yeah, exactly. And when you're saying that it's aligned, it's going to be fun. You're going to find things that light you up and that pull beautiful things out of you. And if you're sitting and crying every day about this little extra side thing you're trying to create, it's OK to put it down. Right. And I know people look at it as failures, but it's not like you're trying something new and to help get you to that next step.
00:20:29
Speaker
So I think it's pretty exciting. So with that kind of stuff, have you ever um had a money lesson that you learned the hard way that you are super grateful for now? Oh, my gosh.
00:20:41
Speaker
So many. So many. I'm over here in like risk land. would say this actually ties to what we were just talking about and especially entrepreneurship and business was so the first year of my business, I was full time in my business. I had just graduated with my bachelor's degree, but instead of getting a nine to five, I just went all in on coaching and I spent one whole year ah floundering around having no idea what I was doing, just like throwing spaghetti against the wall, trying to figure it out.
00:21:11
Speaker
And at the same time, I was draining my savings that I had spent all this time hustling. worked hard Right. I hustled for it and I spent it. And honestly, like, um it was worth it.
00:21:24
Speaker
It was worth it. But I also, this was a really challenging time because I didn't know what I was doing. And I was having all these, like, really difficult conversations with friends and family just being like, would you just get a job? Like, what are you doing? You're wasting all this money. You're wasting all this time. Like,
00:21:40
Speaker
this This thing you're trying to create isn't real. And I was really resistant to getting a part-time job or looking for any work because I thought that it meant I was a failure and that I wasn't committed and that I wasn't all in on my business.
00:21:56
Speaker
And then after a year of doing this, I recognized, oh, wait a second, me getting some extra income is actually not me quitting on my business. It's an opportunity for me to double down on my business.
00:22:09
Speaker
Because when I get this additional money, this empowers me and enables me to keep going with the work that I love. Like I can keep investing in my business and in my work. And so Having been someone that has now spent over $150,000 in my business since I started it five years ago on different coaches and courses and a lot of traveling and attending retreats and networking and personal growth.
00:22:39
Speaker
business takes time. It doesn't happen overnight. You don't have to spend the amount of money that I spent, but if you're committed to something, you do invest time, energy, and money into it. That's part of the commitment. And so the lesson, really the core lesson that I have learned is business takes time. And in order to like really have a successful business, you have to commit for the long

Daily Routines & Positive Mindset

00:23:06
Speaker
term. And that means making strategic and intentional financial decisions that allows you to stay committed to keep investing and still be able to support yourself and to keep going, even if you're not seeing the results that you expect right away.
00:23:24
Speaker
Yeah, no, that's so good. And I love the passion that you bring to it and an urgency of like, folks, don't give up. Like there is so much hope and goodness there. Like you started this journey for a reason.
00:23:36
Speaker
And so I just really love that. So do you have any daily rituals or routines that you swear by that help keep your mindset, you know, going strong and your energy aligned to help you do just that to keep focused and keep going?
00:23:50
Speaker
Yeah, and I have many that I do on like a daily, weekly and monthly basis. In terms of the daily, something that I love doing that I've been practicing for a while now, I'd say a year and a half, maybe two years is I love taking a walk first thing in the morning. So I like wake up, do the like teeth brushing, bed making, throw clothes on and go outside on a 20 to 30 minute walk.
00:24:18
Speaker
And one, it just like really gets the body going and the mind going. But I also call my walk a self-concept walk. And so what I do during my self-concept walk is I take the beliefs that I'm currently instilling and manifesting and cultivating. And that is what I'm thinking about and focusing on, on that walk.
00:24:39
Speaker
So all of the beliefs of like, my business is valuable and successful. I'm a great coach. My work changes lives. Like people want this. It's so easy for me to sell it. Like everything that I'm cultivating And especially these new beliefs that I'm instilling and continuing to integrate, like I just spend the whole entire walk instilling and focusing on those beliefs to really integrate it into my body, into my mind, and do it in a way where I'm doing it consistently every day.

Living an Abundant Life & Conclusion

00:25:09
Speaker
I love it. Yeah. Somebody had shared with me that Sometimes they have trouble staying focused. So they like to like voice record themselves saying all of those kinds of things over them and then play it back every day to kind of start their day. So that's all, you know, I love it. Everybody given the same advice, just in different ways than finding what works for you is so important. Exactly.
00:25:31
Speaker
So how can people find you? How can we connect with you? Learn more about you if they decide, hey, I think this lady could really help me. How can they find you? Yes. So one way that you can find me is I'm very active on Instagram. So you can connect with me at the biz hippie.
00:25:47

Is there anything else that you were like, Danielle, I wanted to talk about that, but you know, you didn't lead me into it. Is there anything else that you want to share or enlighten us with or, you know, provide some laughter, whatever, you you know, you're wanting to share?
00:26:50
Speaker
I mean, I feel like we touched on so much and it was so valuable, but the message that i always love to leave is that, you know, it's so possible for you to live your most abundant life and step into the next level version of whatever that looks like for you.
00:27:04
Speaker
