Introduction to Ginger Snaps

00:00:43
Speaker
Discord. We appreciate you and now on to my Sell Me of Ginger Snaps from 2000.
00:00:49
Speaker
Okay, so Ginger Snaps is directed by John Fawcett, don't know him or anything else he's done, but I'm glad he made this one. And it's starring Catherine Isabella's Ginger, who you probably recognize from American Mary, another absolute hidden gem in one of my favorites, Freddie versus Jason. And she's a side character on a lot of stuff, but those are the ones I always think of her in.
00:01:15
Speaker
her sister Bridget, who's played by Emily Perkins, who is young Beverly on the TV adaptation of It from 1990. She's also the front desk clerk at the Planned Parenthood on Juno, the one, the goth one that gives her the condom that tastes like grape suckers. um So I love her and that.
00:01:41
Speaker
Ginger Snaps is about two death and macabre obsessed sisters named Ginger and Bridget, like I just mentioned, and 2000's Canada.

The Werewolf Transformation and Teenage Changes

00:01:49
Speaker
And although it's the year 2000, it does not feel dated at all. The movie starts out with us finding out that people's dogs are being mauled by a creature deemed the Beast of Bailey Downs, which is the town that these two live in. The sisters are not the same age, but they're in the same grade because Bridget skipped a grade.
00:02:08
Speaker
As they're walking home one night, ah Ginger gets her period and is attacked by a werewolf, which we can assume is the dog killer, much like a shark attack to blood and water. But after that happens, Bridget and Ginger's family and their school peers, I wouldn't say they're friends, but people they go to school with, think Ginger is changing because of her hormones, but Bridget has it in her head that Bridget was bit and is turning into a werewolf.
00:02:38
Speaker
You know, and dealing with mood swings, hair in new places, typical teenage girl stuff, you know?

Searching for a Cure

00:02:43
Speaker
Yeah, Bridget is set on finding a cure for Ginger with the help of a newfound friend named Sam who hit the creature with his Venn that bit Ginger the night it happened. But anyways, my old supervisor told me to watch this years ago when we worked together because it was one of her favorites and I had never seen or heard of it before. She literally had it on her, had it on BHS that she would watch every year.
00:03:08
Speaker
ah So I went home one fall and I was absolutely floored when I watched it because I hadn't seen it before and it instantly became a favorite and a yearly rewatch for me. um As someone who has sisters myself, obviously it hit home that you do anything to protect and save them if they were in the situation Ginger is. And I just really related to them also being quote unquote the weird girl in school for liking horror and just weird shit in general.

Personal Connection to the Film

00:03:38
Speaker
um I even like built a led even go on to like build like horror dioramas in middle school. um Thankfully, my teachers are really supportive of that.
00:03:50
Speaker
I didn't really have someone in school who was like that with me. So although I did have friends, I was still very much an outcast. And even though like there were people who picked on me for that in school, it was mostly me against those people that didn't like me. and So although they didn't like me, I didn't like them even more, which is very also like Ginger and Bridget.
00:04:17
Speaker
So I really related to them for that. I was always unapologetically myself. And even though Bridget is a little younger than Ginger, as the movie goes on, you see ah the admiration that Bridget has for Ginger. And that's much like I had for my older sister um and what my little sister felt towards me growing up as well.
00:04:41
Speaker
where we just wanted to be just like our idol, like our older sister. That's just another way related to them. So it's like Bridget's transformation and into being her own person, as well as following Ginger's transformation into being this beast. Which, yes, werewolf, but also teenage girl dealing with her hormones.

Exploring Themes and Acting

00:05:04
Speaker
And with Ginger and Bridget, although they were so macabre and hateful and sarcastic and whatever, their mom was still so supportive and loved them so much and would do anything for them, much like me and my sisters and what my mom would do and has done for us. It's just another aspect I really related to and loved about this movie.
00:05:26
Speaker
and also their outfits were so on point and captures the fall spirit completely which is why I'm trying to sell you guys this during fall and spooky season because obviously it was just very grungy like it's realistic high school girl goth you know what I mean like long skirts stuff you find it at thrift stores whatever it really stuck with me I don't really know what target audience would like this the most. um I'm sure mostly female, especially with the girl power and the female anatomy that's going on. But it's such a solid werewolf flick with all practical effects and especially in a time where CGI is becoming more prevalent and

From Hidden Gem to Popularity

00:06:14

heavily used. I'm super happy that they stuck to the roots and stuck with practical and the puppetry and costumes.
00:06:20
Speaker
Just the incredible acting by Catherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins really carry this movie. So even if none of the other stuff interests you, you can still see they're good acting and cute girls. So there's that too, if that's all you care about. um And it's really ahead of its time with the themes in the movie.
00:06:39
Speaker
and talking about taboo subjects obviously that people are scared to talk about and I like to sometimes recommend this movie to people that have young daughters that are also trying to get into horror like it's about puberty honestly and I don't know I know that might veer some people away but it they do it in such a tasteful way and I just really love that part of it There is lots of gore in the movie. um Real gore and fake gore, which you'll get into when you watch the movie, um which makes a lot of sense, which was another thing that I really loved about it.

Werewolf Recommendations

00:07:22
Speaker
But even if you have a sister or a sibling in general,
00:07:27
Speaker
that you're close with this sibling bond is heavily represented and just makes you feel some type of way as lots of layers and you can take from it what you will but to me it's a perfect movie and this movie used to be a hidden gem but it's really kind of blowing up in mainstream media the last year or two honestly so i kind of just wanted to in case you haven't heard of it or were reluctant to watch it to just kind of get it watched sooner rather than later, especially because it's being becoming really relevant. But yeah, I guess those are my thoughts on Ginger Snaps and the moment I saw it, it was so important to me. And like I said, it's become a yearly watch.
00:08:10
Speaker
Uh, what this, what Ginger Snaps reminds me of, um, I tried to think of a couple things, but the one thing that really stuck out to me was the movie Cursed from 2005, which was directed by Wes Craven and it stars Jesse Eisenberg and Christina Richie. And also they get attacked by unknowingly a werewolf and follows just their transformation as well.
00:08:37
Speaker
it's not so much like adolescent driven like ginger snaps is but it is so effing good and one of my also child like childhood favorites and i really recommend that one and also it's my west raven so obviously you should watch it and i would say an american werewolf in london um just for the fact that it has all practical effects and one of the best werewolf transformations i've ever seen In a movie, that's practical.

Where to Watch Ginger Snaps

00:09:05
Speaker
Cursed has one of the best werewolf appearances I've seen in a werewolf movie, but I don't think it's not practical, so I know. Disheartening. However, you should still watch.
00:09:20
Speaker
But yeah, I think that's all I have on JinderSnaps and that is streaming on Shutter if you have it. And if not, you should get it. It's cheap and has so much good originals and movies on there.
00:09:33
Speaker
And it's also free to stream on Peacock and Peacock Premium as well. But yeah, I really, really hope you guys go check it out and I'd love to hear your guys' opinions on it if you care to
