Halloween Greetings

00:00:11
Speaker
um happy hallowweed everyone I wish I could make a good Halloween sound effect, but that is not one of my many gifts. But hello, happy Halloween, happy spooky season. Come into my home, my pretties. I can give off witchy vibes if I want to. Yeah. This is not a Tuesday. It is not. What ah fucking day of the week is it? Thursday. It's a special day.
00:00:44
Speaker
And

Podcast Anniversary Celebration

00:00:45
Speaker
ah you may have noticed that we actually released an episode on Tuesday. But this is a very special day because it is our one year anniversary. Yeah, happy anniversary Bestie.
00:01:02
Speaker
Jesus Christ, how did we get here? I don't know. Just by being big gay nerds and really enjoying talking to each other so much that we thought we should record it. Yeah, I guess so. Because the podcast idea as a whole I think stems back significantly longer, like almost another full year entirely. But

Reflecting on Podcast Growth

00:01:27
Speaker
as of early October when we're recording this,
00:01:31
Speaker
We are staring down a thousand downloads. We are at 30 episodes so far. And this has been a really fun time.
00:01:43
Speaker
Yeah, we just wanted to come on and share theoretically short, I believe in us and our ability to record something that's not an hour long. Short retrospective. Thanks to all of y'all. Just some highlights to fucking pat ourselves in the back because turns out making a podcast is a lot of work. It takes a really, really long time.
00:02:08
Speaker
Yeah, we probably put into every individual episode at least eight hours of work, like a piece. isn't not I would say not counting the reading.
00:02:20
Speaker
Cause the reading is its own thing. The reading length varies. Yeah. So i I would, I would sort of fold that into the eight hours ish, but then like reading editing recording, it it takes us, you know, but there are certain episodes, particularly when we have longer episodes that take a whole lot longer.
00:02:41
Speaker
and we'll send things back and forth to each other a couple of times. It'll take me time to find certain files to send to Sam. So it's a lot of work, but it's ah it's a labor of love, but it's a lot of fun.

Learning to Podcast

00:02:54
Speaker
Neither of us had any idea about how to do a podcast.
00:02:59
Speaker
Yeah, this was all very learning on the job. I feel like I have learned so much about editing, which has been really awesome. We are not sponsored by any companies, but I feel comfortable shouting out Reaper, which is the audio editing software that we use because it's really good. It's, it has a very steep learning curve, but it's very powerful. Pricing is very reasonable. It's updated all the time. So I am now a freaking pro.
00:03:27
Speaker
at Reaper for podcasting the specific way that I like to do it because I think you can you can configure it so many. I keep learning new keyboard shortcuts that I should have learned in like my first week and going, oh my God, how have I been editing a podcast for a year and not knowing how to do this? You sent me something at one point. You were like, this literally saves me like an hour and a half. Yeah.
00:03:51
Speaker
this, this like one little shortcut dynamic split baby that but but that also has all of its own. shit and if we could talk about editing workflows if people are ever interested in that but you know we've obviously grown a lot since our first episode. We've gotten smoother, more I feel like our like understanding our flow of our conversations has gotten better suited to the medium but also I think that our early episodes still hold up really well
00:04:24
Speaker
because of that entire year of effort that we put into it before we even started recording this series. We have big plans for when we do finish ah reading through Lord of the Rings, which we will share in their appropriate times. But yeah, I

Global Audience Acknowledgment

00:04:44
Speaker
think I wanted to say you know thank you to all of our listeners from four continents and 15 countries That's bonkers. It's hard to imagine 15 individual people just sitting in a room quietly listening to us talk, but people from 15 countries, how did you find us? How are you here? Hello, welcome.
00:05:07
Speaker
Yeah, um thanks for listening to us. we As I think I've said to a friend of a friend who is also a podcaster, we're recording this for us. This was this was originally like just an extension of our phone conversations.
00:05:27
Speaker
But the fact that other people listen to us and enjoy listening to us and come back every couple of weeks to hear a new episode is mind-boggling and very humbling and very cool.
00:05:41
Speaker
Yeah, it really means a lot to us. And we would be having just as much fun if no one else ever heard a word we said, but to be able to share all of our takes with people is it really exciting. And I think my wish, my closing sentiment that I want to send out into the world is just for everyone to talk to their friends more and take a chance on sharing something you love,
00:06:11
Speaker
getting into something your friend loves. Maybe you won't make a podcast about it, but you'll have fun and spend quality time together. And that's the point. That's the point. And it's such a gift. Maybe you'll discover that you love fishing and your friend loves fishing minigames and video games, and you can make a podcast about that. And that's a callback. Yes. Please.
00:06:33
Speaker
Before we do sign off, ah if you're if you're from one of what that one of the 14 countries that is not America, you can you can skip ahead. But

Encouraging U.S. Voting

00:06:42
Speaker
if you are from the United States and you are listening to our podcast here on October 31st, this is my last chance to encourage you to please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please please go vote in a couple of days.
00:07:01
Speaker
Now, we are, as you may have heard on this podcast, as disillusioned with the political and systems of this country as you could pretty much possibly be. That said, we still live here, and electoral politics will not save us.
00:07:24
Speaker
But it is also one of the many avenues that we have to either affect change or stop things from getting significantly worse.
00:07:36
Speaker
And so I encourage you all to please do your research on all of your candidates, all of your down ballot races. This is not just the presidential election that's at stake. There is a third of the Senate up for reelection. There is the entirety of the House of Representatives up for reelection.
00:07:56
Speaker
There are numerous local races and ballot questions. Please, please, please do your research, especially on some of the ballot questions. um Some of those wordings are difficult. Make sure you have researched, make sure you're not saying, yes, I believe that abortion should be restricted when you think you're saying, yes, abortion should remain accessible and legal.
00:08:23
Speaker
Yeah, that's that's it. Please do your research. Please vote strategically for whoever you think is has the best chance of winning in your area to make change or to not make things significantly worse. An analogy I've seen is voting is kind of like taking public transit. It's not going to take you exactly where you want to go.
00:08:50
Speaker
The candidates will never be exactly who you want them to be, but you can pick the option that gets you the closest and then keep up the work from there. Well, and right now it feels like it's like public transit in um your hometown, which is it'll get you within ah three miles of where you want to be. Do you want to take an hour long walk on the busy shoulder of a road? Maybe, maybe that's your only option.
00:09:18
Speaker
but this Please vote. And also wear a mask when you go to vote. that makes cool of feels Please wear a mask when you go to vote. Please do vote. um Request an absentee ballot if you still can. I don't know if you still can in any state at this point. I don't know if it's a federal right.

Voting Logistics Discussion

00:09:39
Speaker
I should have Googled this before the podcast or if it's just a state by state thing. But I know that at least in some places, the government guarantees, you know, if you're
00:09:49
Speaker
Time that you would be at work is when the polls are open. You are guaranteed pay for an hour or two from the government to have time to go to the polls. It is state by state. There are certain states where you're not actually guaranteed time off. There's like 20 something states where you are guaranteed unpaid time off. And there are states where you are guaranteed paid time off. So Google which one it is in your state. And almost all states have polls that are open longer than a typical shift, eight or 12 hours. And if you are in line when the polls close, stay in line. You can still vote. Yeah, that's just our our last push and prayer. I know we sound like fucking liberals. Um.
00:10:42
Speaker
you know, ah don't don't just vote. Show up to protests, give money to mutual aid. Whatever politician gets into office, make their lives a living fucking hell if they give up on their campaign promises or they're not moving in the direction that you think they should. Call their office multiple times a day, send letters,
00:11:09
Speaker
Again, this isn't going to save us, but it is going to, I don't know, maybe stop us from dying tomorrow. Yeah. I am sure that the vast majority of our audience is queer and various other marginalizations besides, but we're we're feeling it. We're feeling the despair. And, so you know, it's hard for a couple of internet funny bitches to put that into eloquent words for a podcast. But we are feeling the depth of emotion that many of you are also feeling. And so we are using our tiny little platform to say, please vote because it's something.

Civic Duty of Voting

00:11:52
Speaker
It is is literally the lowest rung on the ladder of of things you should be doing.
00:11:58
Speaker
One of my very good friends and my ex is from a country where voting is required. but And you know we were we were in college back during the 2016 election and she was so confused as to why so many people in our class were just not going and voting or weren't registered. or She was like, I have to pay a fine when I can't get back either to my country or to a consulate and can't even get to a consulate to like give an excuse.
00:12:39
Speaker
So, you know, I think it's ah it's an obligation of being a citizen. Anyway, that's, we're now getting very long into that little bit, but yeah, please go vote. Thanks. Yeah. And,

Gratitude for Podcast Journey

00:12:51
Speaker
you know, to bring it back to the point,
00:12:53
Speaker
This has been so fun. It will continue to be so fun. We're grateful for all of you. Brynn, I'm grateful for you most of all. I'm grateful for you too, Sammy. We're gonna see y'all real soon. We will be back next time with yet more of book five. So we will see you all in two weeks on the other side of this American election.
00:13:19
Speaker
