Introduction to Business Playdate

00:00:01
Speaker
Welcome to the Business Playdate, a podcast hosted by Lindsay White and Betsy Moorehead, two internet strangers turned business besties.

Balancing Marketing Careers and Family

00:00:09
Speaker
We're two marketing professionals living across the country, raising our kiddos while running our own individual businesses. We built these businesses based on our experiences working in corporate management roles with the end goal to be able to show up for our families first. And we did it. We're so happy you're here with us. Now let's get into this week's episode.
00:00:31
Speaker
Are we on? Here we are. Here we are. We made it. Welcome back to the business play date, guys.

Impromptu Episode Setup

00:00:38
Speaker
Today's kind of a funny episode because we're just going to shoot the shit with you. We literally just got on this and we're like, what are we talking about today? Because, well, for starters, we're recording. This is on a Wednesday and normally we record on Fridays. So we have now just had half the time to prepare for the week.
00:00:56
Speaker
And I'm leaving on vacation tomorrow. Yes, you are. Oh my gosh. And so yeah, we're just going to catch up, have a little business play date and see where this goes. So hopefully it's a good one. Hopefully you enjoy listening. No real topic. No real topic. What's going on? What we're working on?
00:01:16
Speaker
things we're noticing, you know? Yeah. See what happens.

Applying Time Management Principles

00:01:19
Speaker
Yeah. So the episode that came out last week was all about time management. And that one was really neat to listen back to while I was editing it because it got me back in the mindset that we were in when we recorded it because I'm working on a huge project and actually had like a really, really good meeting with my client this week to go over.
00:01:39
Speaker
Like the first part of the project was them getting all the data together for me to then like take an implant, implement into like their annual report and the actual creative product at all. And so that was like a really big meeting and I had just recorded or recorded, edited the podcast about time management. And so it was like so nice to listen to that before I had this massive call with my client. And so now I can like, feel like I can organize my thoughts a little bit.
00:02:06
Speaker
Yeah, I like that.

Networking for Book Launch Success

00:02:07
Speaker
I also am working on a really big project. We're doing, me and my team are doing a big book launch for a client. And so fun. Yeah, it's really fun. And we've done book launches before, but this is the first one where we, I dunno, we're just doing it a little differently than we've done it before. And it's less of a business book and more of a memoir, which is kind of fun. So it's like very inspirational. How do you find these like author clients?
00:02:35
Speaker
Networking. Yeah. Networking. That makes sense. Yeah. Meet people, talk about how you, I mean, the same things we talk about all the time. How do you find clients, talk about what you do, talk about what you've done. Are they, I'm sorry, go ahead. No, you go ahead. I was just going to say, are they, you said it's like a memoir. Are they famous?
00:02:56
Speaker
I'm sure in her circle she is. Is it Taylor Swift? I wish. I wish. Out of Emily. So right, we are working. So pretty much, I think what we did is we reached out to a publisher. Someone found out that we have done book launches before for a past client. They were like, you need to be connected with this person who is a publishing agent. So we connected with her, and she connected us with her publishing client. So a long chain of events. Yeah.
00:03:25
Speaker
the more people you know, the more you talk about what you're doing, the more people are going to come to you for work. So this is, you know, someone who came to us and was like, Hey, can you help with the marketing of this book launch? We're like, absolutely. So I'm working on all the pieces of puzzle of the puzzle for that.

Managing Book Launch Phases

00:03:39
Speaker
And it's kind of categorized into, and last week's episode and recording, that was so timely. Cause I was like, okay, I'm going to be really thoughtful around how I do this. So I have everything categorized by like pre-launch launch and then post-launch and
00:03:51
Speaker
It's a smaller package. The budget is a little bit smaller. And so we are doing everything for the pre-launch and everything for the launch week. And then for the post-launch, we're just buttoning up all of the pieces of our processes and handing it over to the client saying, okay, here is how you can manage this going forward. It's a lot of PR pitching, media pitching and that kind of stuff.
00:04:10
Speaker
after the book launches.

Creative Deliverables for Projects

00:04:13
Speaker
Are there deliverables with that? Are there creative deliverables, or is it all mostly back end stuff? With the project we're doing for her. Yeah, well, with the launch and everything. Yeah, so I can tell you what they all are. We have a media kit. We have pitch templates. We have a book website that's being put together. So there's branding that's going into that.
00:04:35
Speaker
We've provided some guidance on the cover, but not the actual cover art. We're managing the email marketing for pre-launch and launch. We're managing the
00:04:48
Speaker
So the way we're doing social is how I typically do social with my clients. I do not like to do social media for clients, but I will give them guidance. So I have it broken up by pre-launch. This is what your post is this week. This is what it should be about. You go ahead and run with how you want to build that traffic, that copy, and that sort of thing. But it gives her the plan of each day by day what that social should look like.
00:05:14
Speaker
Yeah, there's a handful of deliverables, a handful of backend processes, and a handful of we're doing a lot of influencer management.

Redefining Influencers

00:05:21
Speaker
Oh, that's cool. We're not actually doing the management, but we're giving the client the tools and the resources she needs to do that influencer management on her own end.
00:05:31
Speaker
Is she going out and finding the people herself or are you guys helping force that? She's tapping into her own network. Cool. So she has kind of like a network of people that she knows. And I also, the way I was trying to talk to her about it, like she has some true influencers like you and I would define an influencer, but also an influencer, especially when you're launching a book or a product or a service, an influencer could be anyone. It could be a, she's got a couple of doctors on her list who are not
00:06:01
Speaker
you know, content creator doctors, like they're real doctors, but they have influence and they have a network of people who will listen to them.
00:06:08
Speaker
It doesn't necessarily mean they have to be like an influencer on social media. Right. And so we're providing her with the templates to give to her influencer network. So social media templates that they can use and say, Hey, this book launched, we're giving her email templates that she can give to her influencer network to send out to their people. Even if it's not on an email platform, maybe they don't have an email list, but they're a professor at a school and they're like, Hey, all these other professors listen to this book that's launching. This is a really exciting opportunity.
00:06:36
Speaker
Very cool. That sounds like an awesome project and like totally, totally different. I guess you usually sometimes work in like financial services. So this is like a nice little brain break from

Embracing New Project Management Tools

00:06:47
Speaker
that. It is. It's super fun. I'm enjoying it. And it's like we talked about a couple episodes ago, it's a project. So it's a good way for me to expand my creativity.
00:06:56
Speaker
It is. That's what I love. The project that I'm working on is for a client that is a non-profit outside of the space that I would normally work into. It is fun to tap into just a different mindset, different energy, different vibe. You're not looking at the same stuff over and over again and it's not advertising. It's like I'm in Facebook Ads Manager almost all day every day for my clients or I'm like,
00:07:18
Speaker
diving into deep strategy work for people, but this is so fun. And again, like we talked about, projects can just be so much more creative. Yeah. They get you out of your mundane tasks. It does. It's been fun. And I'm actually trying something brand new. And I just decided this 10 minutes ago. We are going to use ClickUp to manage. Well, we already knew we were using ClickUp to manage this project.
00:07:46
Speaker
but we are using ClickUp to manage the client, which I've never actually done. I've never invited a client into any project management tool, which I know most people do, and I think that's a standard practice, but my clients are all email people.
00:07:59
Speaker
Well, some of my clients don't have time for that. They wouldn't, they don't, they don't even know what to do. Yeah. They don't, they don't sit at a computer that often. And if they are, they're working so they don't have time for that. Yeah. Yeah. So I've just never been one to invite a client in. So we're going to try it this time. And I'm very nervous. Well, clip a click up is great. I mean, I know you're, I think you probably have more experience with that than I do, but I have been on the other side of somebody inviting me as the client into ClickUp and it was a pretty easy process.
00:08:28
Speaker
Yeah, we were, me and my team were thinking, we're like, okay, how are we going to manage this? It's like, it's going to be so much easier because there's so many pieces of this project puzzle. Yeah. We keep it all in there. My copywriter can just write in ClickUp and the content, the client can go into ClickUp and just say, okay, approved. So we'll see how it goes. You're going on vacation.
00:08:51
Speaker
I am.

Traveling with Family as Entrepreneurs

00:08:52
Speaker
So when this comes out, I will have just gotten back from New Orleans. Oh, how fun. I love New Orleans. We took the girls, so we drove to Florida. We live in Houston and we drove to Florida and we were like, let's stop in New Orleans and just stay the night. It's halfway. It was a 10 hour trip. So we were like, let's just stop in New Orleans. It's five hours.
00:09:13
Speaker
When you take kids to a hotel, it's like freaking Disney World for them. They're so excited about it. We'd been in the car for five hours, we got there, we got to the hotel, we got settled, and they were just going crazy in the hotel room.
00:09:26
Speaker
And then we didn't want to like, it was starting to get dark, so we didn't want to be out too late with them in New Orleans. And we were like, not that far from Jackson square. Um, and we knew that next morning we were going to like walk to cafe du monde and go get beignets and do all of that. So we just like walked to a little restaurant nearby and it was, this is the first time we've taken children on a vacation without family. So it was just my husband and I and the two girls. And so, and the streets of New Orleans were not made for a street.
00:09:54
Speaker
double stroller. I'll just tell you that right now. It was chaotic, but this was a very different experience in New Orleans and it was only 24 hours. I could imagine. You mentioned the streets aren't for a double stroller. Are they for heels? Because I am packing. No ma'am. No ma'am. Have you ever been? I went in college one time and we all know how that probably went. Never left Bourbon Street probably. It was a wild ride.
00:10:20
Speaker
I mean, yes, they can be made for heels. I'm not a heel wearer. So for me, I'd look like a baby giraffe walking around. But yeah, you can wear heels. I wouldn't advise it for all day because it gets pretty gross.
00:10:35
Speaker
in those streets. I think I'm a sneaker girl during the day. Sneaker girl, yes. Hey, let me tell you, this is, listen guys, we have no plan, so who knows what's going to come out of this, but there is such a fun little store on Canal Street, just past Bourbon Street, where you can get glitter sneakers. And when I went from my bachelorette party to New Orleans, we all bought gold glitter sneakers and that's what we wore. And then we all wore them at my wedding.
00:10:57
Speaker
Oh, that's so fun. Isn't that so fun? I'm just saying. If you and your friend want to go get some glitter sneakers, the store noted, I'll have to find it and I'll text you the information, but there's some really cool little places like that. It could be really fun. I'm excited. We have dinner reservations and we're just like a weekend of absolutely no plans. We're going with another couple. Should be fun. Kid free. No kids. Yes. No kids. Yes. And like, even though you're going on vacation and you're going somewhere, we're probably going to have a lot of fun. Like you can sleep.
00:11:27
Speaker
Yes. There's no plans. I love that. I love that. So today I'm running around like a psycho trying to get my apartment ready for my mother-in-law who's going to be watching the children and have snacks and stuff prepped for her. I'm like, oh my gosh, I'm just typical mom, like trying to think of all of the things that could go wrong and make sure it's prepared for her. And I'm like, I know I don't need to be this crazy. Like calm down.
00:11:48
Speaker
Well, and two, you have your mom brain, but then you're also trying to get everything ready. If you have anything work related, it comes up because I know we're the same. We don't work on the weekends. Especially on a weekend where I'm out of town, like my computer station. Oh, absolutely not. So fun anecdote. I used to be terrified of going on vacation and letting my clients

The Freedom of Entrepreneurial Vacations

00:12:07
Speaker
know. My move was always to not let anyone know I was traveling or going to be out of the office.
00:12:14
Speaker
I like just prepared everything in advance and I would schedule emails to go out. So like if they never even had to know, you know, and I'm totally not that person anymore. But so I sent one of my clients a text yesterday and I was like, Hey, I just want to give you a heads up.
00:12:29
Speaker
These are the things I've been working on, but I'm leaving town tomorrow. I will be out of the office starting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, so just wanted to give you a heads up. I won't be here." And his response was explicit, and it said,
00:12:45
Speaker
Yeah, you go girl, that's awesome. Where are you going? It is so funny because it's like, I used to be so scared of telling clients and now I'm like, oh yeah, I'm out of vacation. Well, you know why? Absolutely good for you. Yeah, you know why? Because we were so used to having to ask permission to go on vacation. Yes. One of the corporate days. Like I can remember even having like anxiety sending my boss an email being like, I need to request these days off because I have a
00:13:15
Speaker
X, Y, and Z, you know, to go to or like a family matter that like, Oh my gosh. Like you're like, I know trying to rationalize. You just want to go have a fun weekend. I know. Like you have to like give an explanation for why you're going out of town. It's like, nobody gives a shit. Just go have fun. Exactly. No one cares. He even gave me a restaurant recommendation for New Orleans. Oh, nice. Nice. We have this. So this, so you're going to New Orleans. I wish I was coming because it's my birthday weekend.
00:13:41
Speaker
That'd be so fun. I'm going to take a shark attack in your honor. A shark attack. Oh, yes, please do. Please send me.
00:13:48
Speaker
Um, yeah, so we have like a fun little weekend planned. It's Halloween, you know, it's spooky season. So what's the plan? My in-laws are going to come watch the girls Friday so that we can go have like a child free dinner. My husband and I, so that'll be nice. Um, and then we have like a fun little Saturday plants, my birthday Saturday on the seventh. And we have like a fun little weekend planned. Um, it's like a little Halloween thing happening in our little town. And so we're going to take the girls and
00:14:17
Speaker
meet up with some friends and then have dinner later and it's supposed to get cool here finally so it'll actually like feel like fall which will be nice.
00:14:27
Speaker
Love that. Yes. And so by the time this comes out, I will be 36 thriving. 36 and thriving. 36 and thriving. I'm entering my late 30s. What? That's a rough one. I'm not going to lie. It's crazy. I don't know if you're this way. And it's like, I don't feel
00:14:50
Speaker
like what you thought you would feel like when you're of this age. And so I remember like being younger, being like, ah, 30s, like that's crazy.
00:15:01
Speaker
But damn it, 30s are fun. There's a lot going on here. I mean, I became a mom, I got married, I became a mom, all of that. A lot of responsibilities. I started a business, yeah. And so I keep telling myself, you're a wife, a mom of two, and a business owner. You got it together, girl. Even though you feel like you don't got it together, you got it together. In your 30s, you're doing fine.
00:15:27
Speaker
I mean, I will note that last night was the first full nights of sleep I've gotten in about a week and a half because my daughter has been absolute savage at night, like screaming all night. I feel like a whole new person. It's incredible what a full night's sleep will do or even just like a solid like seven hours of sleep will do.
00:15:46
Speaker
So today I feel like I could be like, Oh yeah, I'm in my thirties and I'm thriving. Uh, asked me two days ago and I would have been like, this is the worst. I want to meet you again. Oh no, I know. No, it's good. I know that like work's been busy for both of us and we've like, it's just been crazy. Like I signed on another client and we've got these projects going on and this podcast has just been like such a fun release of just.
00:16:13
Speaker
connecting with people, even though it's just me and you talking on here. I know. It's so cool to watch people who keep reaching out and they're like, oh my gosh, I relate to that episode so much. That was so valuable. I got so much from that. I'm like, hey, that's so cool. I feel like at the end of the day, my client work
00:16:30
Speaker
It's fine. It pays the bills. I enjoy it. I enjoy the business that I've created. I'm very happy with where I've gotten, but it's so much more impactful to get those messages from people where I feel like I'm changing their life, where I'm like impacting their business. Yeah, it's been a lot of fun. It really has.

Keeping the Podcast Real and Relatable

00:16:48
Speaker
And I would expect more episodes like this sprinkled in occasionally as we just kind of
00:16:57
Speaker
feel this thing out a little bit more. Man, we're just figuring it out. We're figuring it out, but we're also like, this is the realness, right? Like the whole point of this was like to just come on and be real and bring our like boxer conversations to the forefront. And this is literally a conversation we would have back and forth on Foxers.
00:17:13
Speaker
Um, whether we have a topic or not, I hope there's something valuable that came out of this, like where to get glitter sneakers in New Orleans or, you know, like how to use ClickUp, you know, you just never know. You don't, this, this conversation has taken so many turns. Oh my gosh. Well, we hope that everyone has a lovely week. This will be a Thursday when you're hearing it. So week leading into the weekend.
00:17:39
Speaker
And next week we'll have something a little stronger for you. We will. We're gearing up to bring on some really amazing guests, um, to bring you guys, you know, to kind of finish out the year. If you have any topics that you want us to cover or anything that you're interested in learning more about from a business perspective, marketing related, all of that, like even just like what Lindsay buys at Costco. Cause let me tell you, she's like the go-to girl for that. Oh my gosh. I could go off about Costco. Like.
00:18:07
Speaker
I have this brilliant business idea. I guess I shouldn't give it away. I have a brilliant business idea that's totally just surrounding around Costco. I love that place. That place is like my jam. We need to get together and we need to go to Costco together so I can witness what you do while you're there because we went on Sunday and I'm so overwhelmed that by the time I get out of there, I'm like, I just spent $500 and I don't know what I got.
00:18:34
Speaker
I know you get home and you unpack and you're like, I don't have anything still. I know. Or I just have all of this stuff. I have lots of wine. Or I have like now 800 chewy bars and who knows who's going to eat all those before they go bad. Oh, I know. I need to get better about my meal planning before I go to Costco. That's where my downfall is. I end up with like, I have three huge cucumbers right now and I'm like, I guess I'm making cucumber salad, but what else do I need for that?
00:19:04
Speaker
Oh, we will do a whole episode on Costco hauls if we have to. We will. Absolutely. I expect that sometime early 2024. Yeah. That sounds like a good goal. That's a good one. Well, thanks guys. Thanks for joining us. We hope you have a great week, great weekend, and have a great business play date with your business bestie and just call your business bestie and do this. Yeah. Just have fun. And we'll talk to you all next time. Bye guys.
00:19:35
Speaker
you
