The Giftology Approach: Building Authentic Relationships

00:00:03
Speaker
And what it really is about is about relationships. And um that's, you know, the brand's focus over the last ah three years has been ah focused on that relationship, knowing that giftology is the tool that fast forward that and that was mechanism that john used to make VIP connections and to play a lot bigger. When we were small, tiny guys trying to figure this thing out, ah that's how it worked as is John's ability to connect with VIPs and do the leverage of of gifting. But it wasn't gifting in a way that um just give a gift, it was authentic. Everybody felt his is authentic generosity and that's how we wanted to live our lives. So um that's what we sort of built the whole thing around and and leveraged it and just
00:00:48
Speaker
sending that message. That's a very Christian message. Give. Love on people. Be authentic and good things will come your way. That's pretty much the baseline of what we set out to do 20 years ago.

Legacy of Love and Gifting: Rod Neuenschwander's Journey

00:01:51
Speaker
Today's guest is a business partner of a previous guest on this show, a man who sadly and unfortunately passed away just a short time ago.
00:02:01
Speaker
And he is the messenger for the powerful message that this past guest was boldly bringing out into the world. A message of love, a message of generosity, a message of giving, a message of gifting, to be more specific. The name of their company is Giftology.
00:02:26
Speaker
and His name is the one, the only, the legendary Rod. Now, you got to pronounce your last name for me so I don't butcher it. yeah I was waiting for it, man. It's Neuenschwander. Neuenschwander. Let me say it again. The one, the only, the legendary Rod Neuenschwander. There we go. All right. so Welcome to the show, Rod. Good to have you here, man. Appreciate that. Thank you. Very looking forward to it. Appreciate your time.
00:02:52
Speaker
You bet. So, Rod, the folks who listen to this show are freedom-loving entrepreneurs. therere Many of them men are are men and women of faith, men and women who have a big dream that they're going after. I'm one of those crazy, wild-eyed, radical folks who believes that freedom and capitalism are what the world needs, and entrepreneurship is really what the world needs because entrepreneurship is what's gonna solve all the crazy problems that are just gonna keep coming at us as long as the world is turning.
00:03:22
Speaker
And so I'm here to inspire and support those entrepreneurs. And they listen to this show, not because of me. I'm here every week. They listen to the show because of you. They want to get to know you. They want to hear from you. They want to learn what you have to say that's going to help them be better. But before they can open themselves up to you, they got to get to know you, man. No like and trust. So tell us your back story. How'd you get to be the great Rod Neuenschwander?

A Partnership of Faith and Entrepreneurship

00:03:49
Speaker
Well, I got to tell you, Nicky, my story is is in alignment with John's. John and I have been partners for 18 years. Wow. And so it's going back way back. And so ah him and I were business partners and best friends before John Buhlen became John Buhlen. And so ah my story, and I'm right there with you, honestly. I'm excited to be part of this because ah I am right there with you. Entrepreneurship is the future. um And John and I believe that wholeheartedly. And we are men of faith.
00:04:18
Speaker
And we we yeah we we are here today because we believe that we are obedient to our callings and um our go forward is going to be the continuation of that ah obedience. And so I'll give you a little background from ah my, I'll tell you the story of how John and I got together. I think that that'll give you an idea of who we are and and and hopefully inspire some of your listeners as well because I'm sure their stories will be similar because we didn't start off as um you know giftology and the generosity movement.
00:04:48
Speaker
We started off as two farm kids from Ohio, right? My background is is ah John and I met in college, soon after college, and we were ah just had one of those lunches, Nicky, where you ever have a lunch and ah before we left, we're like, man, we we should just start doing we just start buying companies together. That was that was how we ah started off literally 20 years ago.
00:05:14
Speaker
And it was one lunch, and we literally started doing what we said we were going to do. and um And from that point on, it was a couple years after that would actually happen, and then John and I merged together.

From College Friends to Business Partners

00:05:25
Speaker
um in the And the path for me was through um that open door to ah step into what we John and I thought were going to be our first company we bought together. And we ended up ah not buying that company, but I agreed to come in as president as some young 20-year-old person ah And that's how I got into turnarounds. And so John and I um didn't buy that company out. It's a long story. I went into a much larger turnaround after that. And then four years later, John and I decided John had this gifting thing going, right? um Before it became giftology. And he just said, hey, you know what? I think the wheels are falling off. Why don't we just like like merge forces? And that's what we did. And that was going back 20 years ago. And um so in order for that to work out,
00:06:14
Speaker
ah um he he He was struggling a little bit financially and with the company and the two of us together um had became one brain over the next 20 years. And John's brilliance is networking and connecting with people in a way that is just unmatched. um That's why in his funeral ah three weeks ago, there was five almost 500 people there.
00:06:37
Speaker
um And we had hundreds of people online, right? And the only reason that happens is because his ability to connect with people. um But he's also, you know, the two of us together made it all work. And so the interesting part about our partnership was where he was brilliant, um like I learned over the course of time is my job and that partnership is how do I make John, how do I leverage that and allow John to be brilliant?
00:07:06
Speaker
How do we design the organization and allow John to be brilliant and not focused on things that would be required to run the company? So we literally over the next 20 years, we designed um all of it to allow John to live in his space, um to do what he's doing. And then that that ultimately led us to the point where we launched giftology.

Christian Values in Business: The Foundation of Giftology

00:07:24
Speaker
And then um it seems like a you know ah ah fast five years since then or six years, but it it took us 18 years um prior to that to get to that point to where we are to today.
00:07:35
Speaker
Wow, that's a heck of a story, Rod. Yeah. And he was the public face of the company and you were the man who made all the trains run on time in the background, right? Well, Nicky, the joke was, as I found it more funny than John, the joke was that you can be the face and the voice and I'll be the brain. So let's do that. um But everybody knows John. Everybody knows John is brilliant um in many areas, but his superpower um was connecting with people.
00:08:03
Speaker
And we realized over the course of time when we we launched giftology, that giftology is really the tool. And what it really is about is about relationships. And um that's, you know, the brand's focus over the last ah three years has been ah focused on that relationship, knowing that giftology is the tool that fast forward that and that was mechanism that John used to make VIP connections and to play a lot bigger when we were small, tiny guys trying to figure this thing out, ah that's how it worked as is John's ability to connect with VIPs and do the leverage of of gifting. But it wasn't gifting in a way that um just give a gift, it was authentic. Everybody felt his is authentic generosity and that's how we wanted to live our lives. So um that's what we sort of built the whole thing around and and leveraged it and just
00:08:55
Speaker
sending that message. That's a very Christian message. Give. Love on people. Be authentic and um good things will come your way. That's pretty much the baseline of what we ah set out to do 20 years ago. Love on people and good things will come your way. I love that. I'm a Christian myself.
00:09:19
Speaker
I'm actually originally and an immigrant from the Middle East. I'm a Christian from Iran and my family left Iran because of the Islamic Revolution that took place there back in 1979.
00:09:30
Speaker
and I got to tell you, I am very drawn to Christian messages, Christian business people. A lot of my clients are people of faith, and I think the world is going to be a better place when good Christian men and women stand up and live Christian lives, but also are boldly and unapologetically Christian. Unfortunately, in the world today, a lot of Christians have receded and have become weak. And I know that's not who Christ was. He's the one who went into the temple and overturned the Money Changers table. And if he saw a lot of these Christians that are preaching accommodation with an evil and satanic culture in many ways, he would not put up with it for a second. um no

Spreading a Biblical Message Through Business

00:10:19
Speaker
No, he would not. And we believe
00:10:20
Speaker
ah very strongly that our brand ah carries that message in a manner that can be lived out authentically by believers and non-believers. But our hope is is that through our connection and through our generosity and through our on messaging and and the relationships that we build, that the authenticness of of who we are and what our message is, which is is biblical oriented and based, um but it can be be lived out by non-believers, right? And so but we hope our hope is is that that that ultimately is how it resonates. Rod, I like it. ah I like what I'm what i'm hearing. um So tell me ah in a nutshell,
00:11:07
Speaker
How is giftology moving forward in the post-John ruling era? Yeah, that's a ah great question. um I'm going to backtrack a little bit from that and go back about two or three years ago. And so as we're building out the brand, obviously John was central to that because that's you know what we have to do to make um to build out that ah brand. But at the same time, when we realized that the true message is is the ah key messages about the relationship,
00:11:36
Speaker
right? and And you build relationships and giftings of power to make that happen. um So about two and a half years ago, we started the process of um building um an education focused platform. And some of those services that are going to be offered within that were literally called John Not Needed, which is um unbearable, honestly, is his best friend and partner to think about right now. But what we were trying to do was is to take have John last time on stage, traveling, spending more time with his family. And so

Continuing Giftology's Mission Without John

00:12:10
Speaker
we were building um what is now becoming accelerated into our go forward was the our next book is actually coming out in March. And it's about relationships focused primarily on referrals, building that what's John was so brilliant at. And, and you and so the larger message was, hey, build relationships authentically and get the all easier. How you fast forward that
00:12:34
Speaker
um And so all those, that training and education platform is as was already built, was launched last year. John's not in it. John's referenced all the time. um And so we are moving forward and accelerating the pace of those programs that would already exist. And then Giftology's got a big team. It's not just John. So um we have a team that supports John on stage in the messaging and all of it.
00:13:02
Speaker
But we have ah ah we have a team behind us that actually carry out all that all that work. And so we're accelerating our our ah launch into those educational programs. And then we're working with our team and leading heavy on our team um to get us there on on that side of it. And um you know we're going to honor John's legacy through it. um John and I have been partners for for twenty almost 20 years, 18 years. and he's It's as close to a spouse relationship as you're ever going to get. It's a business marriage. It's a business marriage. It's a business marriage. And so, you know, I'm talking to his wife constantly and I'm like, Hey, John's been my partner for 18 years. He's going to be my partner for the next 18 years. Like your daughters are going to know who their dad is by us living out this legacy. And, and they're going to be part of this and they're going, and your future is part of this too. It's, it's,
00:13:54
Speaker
image wonders and rulings together to make this happen. and And with our, with our amazing team. And we have a, we have a long standing amazing team and we have people that went with us almost 10 years, almost as the whole time since we've been in giftology. How big is your team? ah We have a team of eight, a team of eight scattered all across the US and they're all project managers. um But John would have been the first to say like our sales is generated.
00:14:20
Speaker
through our our network and our connections and using Gitology. So we don't ah all our team are project managers and they're managing with accounts and um and in that way. And so we're ah we have a yo big network and we're gonna continue to grow that network. And we have people that are in our network now that wanna help us. And so we're um working with them and through them um to to ah to get to the other side.
00:14:46
Speaker
So let's talk a little bit about um the philosophy of giftology, the philosophy of the generosity movement, as you put it. Put it forward for us in a nutshell, why you believe in it so strongly, ah both from a Christian and heart-based point of view, as well as from a business point of view. Absolutely. um So really what it comes down to is what we know is relationships take you to a marketing camp.
00:15:16
Speaker
Um, and so everybody talks about like, Hey, and you ask them honestly, especially service based companies or, or people that, that way they, they know intuitively referrals are their best source of lead flow. Right. And yet they're, uh, you know, the, the power of giftology is, is, is, uh, really through expanding your, your reach and your relationships in an authentic way that they they know people can tell when it's not authentic and it's just a tactic for you to to get a sale for us done in the right way because we're truly just trying to love on people. Our team will, like for example, our team only lives by two rules. I don't like handbooks. I don't like any of that stuff. We live by two rules. Love our network and the respect your teammates. And by loving our network, we live out what we preach. So we built giftology the same way we're telling ah our clients and partners that partner with us to build it. And and you know John's memorial service
00:16:15
Speaker
is is is evidence of what that is, the authenticness of those relationships, is why 500, almost 500 people showed up and flew all over the country to come to St. Louis to celebrate him. um That can be done for for anybody because if they truly live and and expand their relationships in a manner that way, that could we know good things are gonna happen. And that's that's the basis of it. And we lived it.
00:16:44
Speaker
So if a company is ah looking at this and going, okay, how do i how do I do this inside of my business? Walk them through a customer journey, a customer ah success story, not of doing this one time, but of embedding this in their culture. Absolutely. um So the first thing is, is it's always going to figure out who to who, right? And so the the training program that's being built is going is going to teach them about how they can identify who are the people who invest in in their relationships,

The Art of Personalized Gifting

00:17:18
Speaker
right? And then the second thing is, and what are you doing with those relationships? And so ah the giftology playbook is it's pretty simple. um John talked about it on your podcast be sure before, sure. it's hey Take care of their inner circle. Be authentic with the people that are in your relationship, the people that are around them, their their spouse,
00:17:41
Speaker
um they're their assistants, the people that are in that influence with them. Surprising delight. We have the core messages of of how our team on on behalf of the people that we work with ah are real to them. So you know don't don't send a gift on Christmas Day where you're competing against with everybody else. Our team will teach ah the um how to ah send a message that is real on and on a non Christmas type holiday where everybody else is competing for it. Or if you're going to do it, do it the ruling way, which would be have it land before Thanksgiving and be part of the thanks Thanksgiving celebrations and make sure that it's real and it's part of the conversations. And it's not about the gifts, but it's about the ah have a relationship. But once you understand the power of that relationship, then you're you're okay spending um on that gift in and not looking for just immediate return.
00:18:35
Speaker
And we know that the more you're giving, that in that mindset, and it's really just ah learning that mindset, once you understand that mindset, then it becomes natural to you.
00:18:51
Speaker
So let's get specific about this. So I'll i'll use myself as an example so you know listener can follow on. Yeah. I have ah some key clients and I just made a list of them right now. I have seven key clients and I have two key mentors. ah And then if I wanted to, as an example, show these folks what the relationship means to me, what what would I do? How would I go about figuring this out? Yeah.
00:19:28
Speaker
So ah one of the Johns, we have a, we call it gifts like John VIP. So let's talk, let's start with your mentors, right? The people that had a big impact on you. John's, one of the John's go-to things was a ah mug that was, it's not just a normal mug. It is a customized mug where you're, you are working with ah and giving information about that the importance of that relationship to you to an artist who's using that and designing a mug specifically for that person. It'll show up, not to show up like in a normal mug would show up, it's going to show up in a box with a video from the artist explaining why it's designed specifically for that one of one
00:20:13
Speaker
mug that's designed for that person from um you and explain the importance of that relationship. that's That's what we're talking about. It's not just a ah token thing. It is an understanding of the depth of that relationship that's related through that.
00:20:29
Speaker
um and that's that That is one example of what we would be doing on behalf of of um accounts for on your behalf. Walk me through the thought process. How do you figure out how I'm going to serve these types of folks with a meaningful gift, a meaningful gesture? How'd you think that through? Um, so really it's it's going to come down to like how, think about that relate. So in the mug, for example, like they're going to,
00:21:00
Speaker
there's a process that you're going to be walking through understanding, okay, they're gonna ask questions and you're gonna, there's a set, a lot of questions that truly get to the essence of that relationship on your behalf. Because what that the artist wants to do is, is gather the essence. It's not a full thing. It's like the core message of, of that relationship to you is really what's going to the, what's going to matter the most. And so it's, um, it's really coming down to that, for that level of that relationship of understanding of like, okay,
00:21:29
Speaker
the key elements of it. For John and me, for example, the thing about John for me was is he was not just my business partner, he's my best friend. So in that in that instance for me, it's it's so the depth of that relationship is so critical, but we lived life together in a manner that was so close that um you know, its authenticness in the ah ah grit behind working together with ah him and understanding the depth. That's what the artist is capturing in that. And he will help design a single word that sort of defines that relationship ah for for or how you're gonna speak to that person recipient. um And that's the process that our team leads you through. So it's literally just understanding the depth of that relationship and understanding it forward but for that VIP type of connection.
00:22:21
Speaker
So someone's a client and um you know I know them well as a client, but I don't know their personal life that well. So how do you go about figuring out what you're going to do for someone who's a client? Yeah, so our ah our our there's that that's I was talking about VIP. So like all the other relationships that you're learning and growing um from, it's going to be more around just understanding how um How important that relationship is to you in a different manner that's played played out. Not not as as intimate as that ah mug would be. You don't want to give a mug that that close to just obstin a regular context the contact. The contacts you're going to be, our our team would work with you on would be focusing on on that inner circle. Are they married? um and And that's why if you look at our gifts, they're centered around mostly facilitating that on your behalf. That's why we focus on the kitchen, for example.
00:23:16
Speaker
Like everybody asks, well, why is Cutco? Well, because Cutco is something that's meaningful. It's touched every single day. And they and they will remember you in a way that's different because you're they're using it every single day. um you might Our team will help understand a little bit more about that person. Maybe there maybe they're in the scripture. Great. Well, they're going to help maybe engrave scripture on that, not about so that the relationship is ah is is what's important to you in their in their connect context. Maybe they're an author. We've done things in the past where they're an author and that there might be some meaningful quotes that are important to you that we would engrave on your behalf and onto those. Those are the types of things that our team would do and facilitate on your behalf um at a much larger scalable way of doing that and and helping ah deliver ah from 10 to thousands of people all at once, but still be meaningful.
00:24:08
Speaker
So talk a little bit about referrals. How do people create relationships that result in referrals? Because I know that was something that John focused on and was pretty good at. Yeah. Yeah. um the The thing about it is that the way John did it, Nicky, is he would rarely have to

The Natural Flow of Referrals Through Relationship Building

00:24:35
Speaker
ask for referrals. He lived it out. And that's the message of of what we've been able to carry through. So he was not at one to just facilitate like a transactional type relationship. He would go and ah and he would work through
00:24:51
Speaker
um and figure out within, let's just say, a network that we wanted to reach into, he would understand who who were the people in that network that would have influence. And he we focused our energy on the influencers, and that's where we spend we spend money and resources on is is is understanding who they are, and then we would join the facilitated relationship with them and um in an authentic way. Everything's authentic that we do, and that's how we would gain ah access to new networks
00:25:22
Speaker
So how, give me an example. Yep. Uh, through the power of gifting. So he would send a, uh, um, uh, Cucko in grave knife to them. That would be meaningful to them. It's something about with their, uh, that would be important to them. They would, he would work through them with, um, Cucko is a lot of what we ended up doing because of the power of, of that connection point in within the kitchen. Cause then there'd be times where he would show up to events where the spouse.
00:25:50
Speaker
which would be super excited to meet John because day of what he had gifted to that household. And so then we would focus our energies on that person and their inner circle and their networks through the power of that gift. Okay. Okay. So um that's beautiful. I like it. I like it. I like it. I like it. Now um those gifts would open doors for folks. yeah Absolutely, because when we would end up doing is is saying, hey, um who can we get on your behalf? How can we help? How can we help you? um and And the focus is on that person. So the focus isn't on us. The focus is on how can we help you? And so ah they would ah we would get on that person's behalf um a lot of times and to help them expand and love on their network. And that's how John ultimately landed.
00:26:48
Speaker
um more and more opportunities for us, but also really authentically just helped and he did it in a way that was meaningful. it's Like, hey, help give us 10 people. Let's love on them on your behalf. And that's how we would do it. And that anybody can do that. Rod, ah you know, it's um it's a sad thing that John passed away so young, but You never know when the Lord's going to call you home. And the Lord called him home. And there's a Billy Joel song that goes something like this, only the good die young. yeah John was young and he was good. I'm sad that he's moved on. I'm happy for him that he's in heaven. And it's a pleasure to meet you. You're a good man as well. I can tell John would only be partners with an equally good man.
00:27:44
Speaker
Uh, I'm here to help and support you. I'd like to chat with you offline about some thoughts and ideas I have in that regard. I'm going to, I'm ordering two mugs. I'm speaking to Clarissa. I don't know if you knew that or not, but Oh, I did not know that. Okay. yeah great still Yeah. Um, Cameron, when he was on the show, talked about the mugs and he went on and on about it. And I said, yeah, I'll order a couple of mugs after all you sold me. These are good salesman for you guys. You should, you should have him keep talking about you. Those mugs are game changers. They really are. It is, it is a, uh, a huge impact on, on people.
00:28:14
Speaker
um But yeah, John john left this early week but's earth way too early. um You did. And we we truly felt um that, ah and we still believe well we're gonna live out the mission of... Yeah, of course you are. That way through John um and understanding it. I was talking to my ah team at John's Memorial. we obviously had We had a dinner and just trying to pull everybody together. It's hard to make when everybody's spread out. So we're all over the US. And that was the first time we could spend spend time together.
00:28:43
Speaker
Um, and so my team gets, uh, last at me, but my, I grew up in the, uh, by a dairy farmer with one arm. So I have this, he got his arm cut off in an accident and I saw, I had this thing called a lessons learned from one non dairy farmer. And so at that dinner, I was talking to them about, Hey, um, when my dad lost his arm, everybody was, was asking him, Hey, what are you going to do? Like, what's your go forward look like and for like, for you, you're young and.
00:29:11

You lost your right arm. What are you going to do? And his answer was, I'm going to farm. So the life lesson for ah one of our dairy farmers, you don't give up. And so I talked to our team. I'm like, hey, John's been my partner for 20 years. I'm heartbroken, um but also resolved because the message isn't done. The message isn't over. And so what are we going to do when we love owen John leaves us earth too early? We're going to passionately teach the world generosity just like we did the last 18 years. And that's how we're going to live out his legacy. And that's that's our goal.

and we we know that's gonna happen and we're believing that God's gonna open some great doors for us. Yeah, 100%, man, 100%. God bless you for that. So we end off ah each episode by asking you, our guest expert, for your top three expert action steps. These are your three best pieces of advice for my listener to take their life, ye their business, their ah relationship with God to another level. What say you?
00:30:09
Speaker
yeah All right, so let's go back to John and I's relationship. John and I are, um so, and and since that point, we've actually, I've partnered with other founders underneath the rule and brand and we've helped companies that are struggling from founder's perspective, ah from from turnaround to to

sell events. So we've helped to create $30 million dollars of wealth for them um the last 10 years too. Nobody knows that part about our company.

But the point of this the whole thing is it's the same thing that I did with John. So if there's a listener out there that is a entrepreneur and a founder, um my thing is is I focus on the founder. I'm like, what do I have to help you to be great? like my I learned this early with John before we started doing this other stuff um with other partners is the reality of it is is I can ask John to do things that you know John isn't naturally great at, and he might get from a four to a six, right? right It's not going to change the world. what i What I learned early on was, no, I need to design the entire organization, ah a lot allowing John's greatness to live out. And so my number one thing was like, if they're on a founder role or if that type of setting, live in the part that makes you world-class and amazing.

um And that's what we did for the last 18 years is design the entire organization to allow John to be amazing. And so that's number one. Number two is no, nothing's linear. um Nothing was easy in this process as we built it out to grit. And so, um you know, John and I would, ah we we fought hard and we lived to every single day, um you know how it is. Like it's never a linear path ah from here to there. And so it takes an an enormous amount of grit um for us. But overall, the third thing I would say is that John and I lived every single day with living in an obedience for what we but believed God was calling us to do. um And some of those things were not easy, but that that is the the the number one thing that we've focused on in the last 20 years. And that's what we're gonna continue to try to focusing on is being obedient.
