Introduction and Cat Talk

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. um I'm back home today in Oxford in the family home. um I'll see if I can get my cat to come into frame at some point in the podcast. She used to be called Cornflakes, but since starting the pod, I've changed her name to John-Philippe Matessa. With me today is Dan Tanner. How are you doing, Dan?
00:00:36
Dan Tanner
I'm doing all right. and We definitely definitely need to get that cat. We need a mascot. We need a mascot. We need it for needing for the YouTube videos. If you watch enough of those YouTube videos, they have pets jumping on them and they always get some nice clicks on there. so
00:00:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I can hear her moving about outside, so at any moment now, she might burst in.
00:00:51
Dan Tanner
yep

International Break and Palace's Performance

00:01:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
so yeah ah How are you doing, Dan?
00:01:14
Dan Tanner
We're doing all right so far. We've got halfway through the international break, so only a little bit longer to wait before we can get back to our regular regularly scheduled programming and get back to painfully watching Palace try struggling through games at the moment.
00:01:30
Dan Tanner
ah
00:01:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
is for us on the podcast who are uh England supporting it is more fun to watch the international break land uh palace right now I think it's fair to say um but it's a nice segue into just laying out what we're going to talk about today which is some of the internationals that palace players have been involved with we're then going to talk about some transfer rumors have started swirling around feels a bit like
00:01:32
Dan Tanner
with
00:02:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
when people start, shops start putting out Christmas stuff at this time of year, doesn't it, in November for transfer rooms already to be ruminating, but ruminating they are. um And we will talk about them. And then we will finish with a segment discussing what the worst possible appointment palace could make if Elastina were to get the chop would be. So starting with the Internationals,
00:02:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
In his penultimate game in the dugout, Lee Carsey's England dispatched Greece 3-0. The Eagles were represented in the game by Mark Gehry, who played the full 90. How do you feel he did in this one, Dan? Give a good account of himself again?
00:02:48
Dan Tanner
More or less, it was a good solid performance, went through nil-nil, well, without conceding, so it gets a clean sheet, so that's always good on the books. It didn't really, as far as I could tell, didn't really put a foot wrong. It wasn't outplayed or out-possessed or anything, so it put a decent enough solid performance. Most of the saves were sort of Pickford's, and there was only one or two real scares, I think,
00:03:17
Dan Tanner
from it, they greased and put up that much of an attacking threat. There were bits of it, but the solid performance came back with all 10 fingers and all 10 toes where they're supposed to be, so I'm happy with that.
00:03:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think that's probably the most important thing, fellas, at this stage, is that Mark Gahey's increased presence in the England squad doesn't lead to him getting injured. But as you say, it looks like it was another very solid performance for him. I tried to listen to the game um on 5 Live on the train down, and it was just John Murray and Leon Osman.
00:03:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Complaining about the price of bottled water in a in the stadium, which was I think 50 cents, which sounds like a very reasonable Reasonable ask bottled water if you ask me why they're so up in arms about that um as they used nicer treatment in the boxes
00:04:09
Dan Tanner
yeah especially especially when you've got ah london beer prices yeah come on guys really
00:04:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:04:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, but yeah, it looks like as you say, Matt Gahey, very solid. Clearly, Greece did get in a few times, but I don't think that's on him. I think that's on the...
00:04:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
aggressive attacking an open football that Lee Karsley's decided to play in his his short time in charge.

International Matches Recap

00:04:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Margay made three really important exceptions to stop that being worse and um yeah in in moments where you united the line is stretched and quite high and it's quite dangerous, read the game really well, completed 95% of his passes.
00:04:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
um better day for him than concert who had to come off injured a half times the remake his mark so you really feel like gay he is establishing himself as England's main man in the defense barring perhaps John stones when fully fit um Elsewhere, Matt Turner and Chris Richards, US men's national team, beat Steve McLaren's Jamaica 1-0 away from home. Matt Turner, starting this one, Chris Richards was on the bench and he had some penalty heroics stopping stopping a pen ah from Damari Gray to secure Pochettino his second win
00:05:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
as the manager of the US. What do you think about this, Dan? Is that a kind of a good boost for Palace's backup keeper? Could he even start to challenge Henderson if he keeps up that kind of form?
00:06:01
Dan Tanner
Well, this is kind of a thing with goalies. As soon as they start losing form, they can get dropped quite easily. Just sort of look at some of the Arsenal goalies over the last couple of years. They've had sort of one or two, like one England internationals. And as soon as they start losing sort of ground or conceiving too many or just not controlling the defence, etc., they can get dropped like that. They will very easily find another one. So um I think he could probably, but I don't see it happening any time soon because, ironically, Matt Etern had been number three at Arsenal for a couple of years, so he didn't really sort of push up the ah the depth chart there. so But getting him a penalty save is always good for the confidence. It's one of the few times goalies can actually be heroes, so it will go in his sort of CV and his highlight reel for when he's
00:06:55
Dan Tanner
sort of trying to like the next um team he's probably going to be moving on to or once he retires and go, look, I save the penalty here in ah the concert have quarter final first leg. So it's like he's going to, yeah, it's part of his CV now and he's got a nice highlight reel, but that I don't really see it much going much further than that because I think he what he's towards the back end of his career as well. So um be an international goalie at best.
00:07:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think you're right. I mean, Hendo's been great this year, hasn't he? Henderson's three steps it up and had some exceptional performances and conceded comfortably fewer goals than he should have on expected goals. So I don't see him challenging him anytime soon. That said, I think Matt Turner was a backup that I was kind of worried about for Palace. I was four at Forest and Arsenal. He had the physicality yeah of a slapstick silent movie comedian and seemed kind of error-prone all the time and he' he's reassured me with recent performances. I think he was pretty good against um
00:08:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Aston Villa in the the cup and yeah pretty good in this game, good distribution, good decision making. It is worth noting that he did concede the penalty that he eventually stopped but it was a really great penalty stop. Damari Gray absolutely funded the ball at him and he turned it round the post with a ah big hand, read it perfectly.
00:08:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And yeah, he could end up being a ah valuable player or take as an injury or a loss of form for Henderson. I do think as an American goalkeeper, he could take his game to another level if he just shaved his head. Because you look at Tim Howard, Brad Friedel, Brad Guzan.
00:08:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
That is let the remaining common denominator, that all of them were really solid, primarily shot stoppers. Matt Turner has not quite found his place. I think gets rid of the hair on his head, either grows a longer beard, Tim Howard style, or a or gets rid of it entirely, Brad Friedl style, and he might see his performances hit another level. But until then,
00:09:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
a reassuring performance from the Palace Backup Keeper.
00:09:19
Dan Tanner
So what I'm trying to do is
00:09:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Elsewhere again, Daichi Kamada played today against an Indonesia team that I was surprised to learn contained players named Tom Hay, Sandy Walsh, and a guy called Ragnar, who is the nephew of Indonesia's ambassador to China and Mongolia. um Japan swept Indonesia's side, comfortable 4-0.
00:09:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Do you think that will help build this confidence back up after that red card in the Fulham game then?
00:09:54
Dan Tanner
I don't think it could hurt when beating Indonesia 4-0 but it's going to be very much that they would have expected to do that anyway. I don't think the Japanese really have that much competition when it comes to the sort of the Asian ah quartet around there and until they probably play something like Australia or something.
00:10:13
Dan Tanner
ah oh no we've got have we
00:10:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you want to let me test this guy in?
00:10:17
Dan Tanner
We finally have our mascot, ladies and gentlemen.
00:10:21
Dan Tanner
Ta-da!
00:10:26
Dan Tanner
For the YouTube channel.
00:10:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
not having fun. Yeah, I think she wants feeding, not... Sticky front of a camera. There she is.
00:10:34
Dan Tanner
okay
00:10:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
She can wait for the food. I have a face in this place, I've brought none.
00:10:39
Dan Tanner
We're going to wait 15 minutes.
00:10:47
Dan Tanner
Yeah, as I was saying, yeah, the Indonesian team aren't exactly going to be much of a ah threat for the ah Japanese team. Their real ah one is going to be playing any sort of the Australians as they moved out there a couple of years ago to actually try and get into some World Cups. So and maybe even the Korean team as they've started to get a few more players that are playing in the top top leagues. So but it can't hurt his confidence, especially after a kind of torrid couple of months since signing and a bit of a, and the red card on the weekend. So yeah, it's, it couldn't hurt, but I don't see it changing all that much. They are professionals. So these kinds of things kind of roll off their back a little bit.
00:11:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think you're right. As you say, it can only sort of be good, but how good it can be is is a question. I think that will be the expectation. Indonesia is is a big and football-mad country, but it's not translated into a good team really at this point. The bottom of the qualifying group in Japan are one of the strongest sides in Asia, going really well. um I think it would be good for him to get really far away from the distractions of ah so the Premier League, the pressures of um being around all that and have a a bit of a ah mental reset across the other side of the world. I'm sure that that'll be helpful, but how much good performance against Indonesia will be.
00:12:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
a pep in a step or if it's just a kind of relief that that's also yeah but so you know gone fine. ah I don't know, but it can only be helpful.
00:12:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um various other internationals still to come for Palace in the break including Columbia Uruguay is at the stroke of midnight tonight I think um so yeah plenty to keep an eye on and I'm sure we'll pick up again um next week ah but yeah there let's pause and have a word from our sponsor
00:13:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, now it's the November international break.

Transfer Rumors and Speculations

00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's about time that the transfer rumor mill grinds back into action. um There's been lots of rumors about Palace going around this week. ah So let's stop and have a look at some of them.
00:13:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah One is that Palace have been linked with another move for Thomas Araujo, the young Benfica centre back. They had a bid rebuffed for in the summer. um Chelsea and Newcastle are also both said to be interested in the boy. What do you think of this one, Dan? Would he be helpful?
00:14:11
Dan Tanner
um i We can always take as many people as we can get at the moment, but if Chelsea are in the bidding process, I think we're probably going to be a little bit out of luck. ah They can kind of ah guarantee, do you want to play Champions League football, which he's already playing at the moment, sort of playing for Ben Fica, European football. So um coming down to Palace, I don't think we can, probably we're not that an attractive prospect for him.
00:14:39
Dan Tanner
But if we can if we can nick one from Chelsea with all of their resources would be an absolute coup for us. But I just really don't see it happening with a guy like that is going to be looking to try and weasel his way into the ah international teams. And the way you do that is being on the in the top six and playing Champions League football and sort of playing against the big clubs. but We have our internationals as we've already brought up, but we don't have them in the big like top 10 nations, all that many.
00:15:12
Dan Tanner
we have two We have two at most in the England squad. Most of the rest of them are spread around the world. um But yeah, it would be great, but I just don't see it happening.
00:15:24
Dan Tanner
At the moment, I think it's still a rumor, but yeah, I just really don't see that coming or going our way.
00:15:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I agree. I don't think this makes sense or will happen. He's clearly a really good player and he started three games in the Champions League this season and given a really good account of himself each time it would seem. So it wouldn't be an unwelcome addition to Palace. But when Parse approached Benfica with a 25 million-ish beard reportedly in the summer.
00:15:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Benfica said they were holding out for the £80 million pounds of his release clause, which is an...
00:16:03
Dan Tanner
Yeah, but they want the release clause. Yeah, that's them. We can't do that.
00:16:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
here' go
00:16:07
Dan Tanner
We're going.
00:16:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So then I also think like, if Palace keep hold of Mark Gahey, then centre back is the position with the most depth with Riyadh and Richards waiting in the wings and Chellabar and that's why they're so wide woods.
00:16:24
Dan Tanner
Yeah.
00:16:26
Dan Tanner
We.
00:16:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
they then put their money so into another censor back.
00:16:27
Dan Tanner
Yeah.
00:16:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if they do lose Gehi, it sounds like it would be most of the money of the fee would have to be reinvested in Araujo. And again, I think even the strength in that position, that'd be better spent kind of elsewhere on maybe a cheaper censor back and in another position.
00:16:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I don't think it really makes any sense. And I don't think it'll happen because Newcastle and Chelsea can pay Ben Fieken more and moore and ah presumably more appealing destinations for young players as well.
00:17:01
Dan Tanner
They can also they could also trigger the the release clause, which we can't.
00:17:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is that Chelsea? Absolutely.
00:17:07
Dan Tanner
Kelsey can do it without a problem. New class can do it without a problem. ah
00:17:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
why If there's an option available for Chelsea to pay ah pay over the odds for a player, I think they will take it.
00:17:18
Dan Tanner
We've done it many times before.
00:17:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
so yeah
00:17:21
Dan Tanner
I wonder if we're going to talk about it probably in the next couple of moments too.
00:17:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah ah we Yeah, we are indeed. um We've got two Chelsea rumours to talk about. We'll start with, what let's say it's the more serious one, which is that Palace are reportedly now front runners to sign um Ben Chilwell. I think he's kind of bottom of Maresca's Christmas list. Clearly, Chelsea want rid of him. Would you be happy to see him come to Salhurst, Dan?
00:17:53
Dan Tanner
i'd but I'd love him at Sellers. He's a left-back that I've always liked. When he first came to Chelsea, he was very good ah down that wing. He got a couple of goals as well. He was a great crosser of the ball.
00:18:08
Dan Tanner
he's one that a well He's also sort of a England international at the time, which we didn't really have a really good left back for quite a while. I think the one before him was late in Baines and we mainly kept him in because he could take a free kick. um Before that, it was Ashley Cole for many, many years considered what like one of the left best left backs, not just of his generation, but almost of all time.
00:18:34
Dan Tanner
um But Chiwel is a really really good left back and he can also play that kind of out sort of wing back formation that we kind of are favoring at the moment. ah is' also um I was also baffled why he wasn't in the Euro squad when he was clearly fit, clearly available but Gareth Southgate still brought in Luke Shaw who was unfit and hadn't played for a month and a half.
00:19:02
Dan Tanner
so um He's a guy that's had just the horrid luck over the last couple of years, and it's very clear Chelsea going to get rid of him, probably to try and balance their books out a little bit. And if we can get him at a steal, even better, because we need very much a bit of depth on that left back position. Tyree Mitchell can only do that for so long. ah doing yeah Just being expected to play all along that left wing, lastly by himself, probably with a little bit of help from Eze when he and wanders out into that position as he likes to do but I think you'd be a great addition to the squad but I'm always for as many people as I can get so ah yeah the bigger the squad the better I'm always
00:19:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:19:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I think that's, yeah, it's been vindicated at the moment with the crisis that palace are in, isn't it? I completely agree. I think the point you wrote about the wing backs is an important one because that was where when Shaw was at absolute best and was a ah staple in people's fantasy teams all over the country, it was playing that wing back role in a near identical formation to Glastonos preferred 343 under Thomas Tuchel. He dislodged um the world's preeminent
00:20:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
wing back specialist in Mark Solonzo in that position showed a a knack for stealing into the back post to score goals, great crossing, great time in his runs and a brilliant engine on him. And I think Tyrone Mitchell badly needs support in that position in terms of he he looks leggy at the end of a lot of games at the moment because he plays 90 minutes pretty much every week, bombing up and down for the full 90.
00:20:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Pallas could use a someone who offers something a bit different, as Mitchell's brilliant defensively, but is not the he's naturally a ah left-back and a back-four and a fairly conservative one at that, I think you'd say. He's not an adventurous, attack-minded fullback, so venture well could offer something different and a lot of support there.
00:21:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
His weights are probably quite high, but I think Palace would get him on the cheap in terms of the fee. I guess the only questions are, is his fitness too bad, actually, for him to be useful?
00:21:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is that what Chelsea are trying to obscure from us? And will the Selhurst Park faithful take to a man who's never had a Chinese in his life or these last four have never tried a Chinese middle, which is insane.
00:21:38
Dan Tanner
on
00:21:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's insane.
00:21:42
Dan Tanner
oh we can't trust no right okay that's don't lee nature mind now
00:21:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
He may have said to try Chinese since that video, but it was a few years And then the last one, this is probably a silly rumor, but there have been stories swirling around that Michaela Mudrick, the least well-received thing with loads of initials to hit London since M&M World opened in Leicester Square, ah could be on his way to Palace online.
00:21:47
Dan Tanner
ah
00:21:51
Dan Tanner
honest There's a really good one ah not too far from Celos Park so um we can
00:22:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
um For starters, do you think if this was at all realistic, it would benefit Palestine?
00:22:37
Dan Tanner
um As I was saying before, I'll take whatever we can get at the moment. We are down to a shoestring. And Motrich isn't an awful player. I just think he was massively over advertised. They basically saw the Chelsea logo and whacked up the price the same way that they got done on the deal for Kepa.
00:23:00
Dan Tanner
He's a decent enough player. He just hasn't had the opportunity to really do anything. He gets sort of bit part players and things like that. And I'm probably assuming much like Chihua earlier that they're trying to get him off the books because they put in this ridiculously long convoluted contract on the idea that he was going to be the next like superstar. And then they've kind of gone.
00:23:26
Dan Tanner
Yeah, no, we want to need to try and get him off the books as quickly as possible. So getting him out on loan puts him in the shop window. Hopefully some but some other either another club in Europe can probably do a deal, maybe cut his sort of eat into his wages a little bit. Chelsea may have to like maybe pay off some of that and go, right, well, if you fighting will pay for his wages for the first like three or four years of his career just um just to get him off the books so if he comes to palace on loan that's fine i think it'll be a good enough addition we need as much help as we can get when it comes to the attacking options and it'll be ah good for him as well so he'll get some flying time probably fairly likely he'll get a few starts as well he'll give
00:24:15
Dan Tanner
as we've mentioned with Tyrig Mitchell, he'll give Eze an opportunity to probably take a break here and there as well. So I think it is a win-win, but he's always going to have that stigma of not really living up to the ridiculous price tag that he got given, sort of got bought with.
00:24:31
Dan Tanner
So we'll see what happens really, if he turns up, cool.
00:24:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:24:36
Dan Tanner
If not, cool. ah
00:24:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I like the idea of him and going with Chelsea pay paying his wages, paying for the transit.
00:24:44
Dan Tanner
Oh there are loads of these transfers where they've gone like massive wages and they've gone we'll pay the first like couple of years of his wages just so we can get rid of him so he's not on our books.
00:24:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah.
00:24:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
jesus It's a bit like, yeah, it's a bit like, uh, jembering like, uh, these days of lockdown when the the price of a barrel of oil went negative, as in you got paid to take oil off people's hands.
00:25:08
Dan Tanner
ask for
00:25:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's kind of like that with Mudjic, isn't it? i've I've got my doubts about the utility. And as you say, more depth is always good, but does he even offer more than is my the Sa?
00:25:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I feel like Sa has a bit more efficient and similarly is kind of very quick, direct, um skillful winger. I also think Mudjic is a bit like Werner if Werner didn't get the chances to miss in the first place and he's kind of another unconfident player to be throwing into a currently unconfident environment but the key point on him is if he were to come in at all it would presumably not be until next summer as has been ah laid out very well in an article by We Are Palace because
00:25:41
Dan Tanner
Yeah, that's exactly what I was going to say.
00:25:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
the primitive loan rules prevent you from having more than one player on loan at a time from the same club.
00:26:02
Dan Tanner
I was trying to remember when you brought it up, I was going, hang on, there are some rules to this.
00:26:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
so ah yeah
00:26:07
Dan Tanner
There's only from the English, you can only have one from the same club.
00:26:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah yeah
00:26:12
Dan Tanner
So I was thinking, yeah, either we're going to have to do some very weird dealings here or it's going to have to wait.
00:26:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, if one club is going to find a creative instrument to get around that, it's told by this Chelsea, but yeah, I don't and see this one happening.
00:26:26
Dan Tanner
Yeah.
00:26:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
um and We'll have a pause for a word from the network now and go into our final section.

Humorous Speculations and Wrap-up

00:27:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
So President-elect Donald Trump ah has appointed Robert F. Kennedy, an anti-vaxxer as health minister, and Elon Musk, a man who appears to spend all day posting memes from his work computer, as his efficiencies are, which has got me thinking, if Glaston was to get the chop from Crystal Palace, who would be the worst person they could possibly choose to appoint him?
00:27:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who would you like to see him take out least then?
00:27:31
Dan Tanner
beautiful
00:27:34
Dan Tanner
Well, at least I would not really want to see Roy Hodgson there again, just mainly because we've been there, done that, and it's kind of... We know what's going to happen, but what I'd actually think would be, I don't want to say the worst, but it could be a double-edged sword would be Jose. Because, well, he we all know he is a good manager. He has one stuff.
00:28:01
Dan Tanner
He has won tournaments and leagues pretty much everywhere he's gone. But it's Jose. He is such a distraction with his antics. but i think recently I think recently he put a a laptop in front of a camera to show an offside that was given that wasn't or something like that just to essentially show up the refs.

And he's sitting there on the bench like a naughty schoolboy, knowing exactly what he did. But he doesn't care. And of these mind games, he kind of plays with other managers and kind of the the picking on them like a year's picking on Arsene Wenger for no reason whatsoever. Just picking on him for no reason. But and and then you've also got his managerial style.
00:28:58
Dan Tanner
which can be seem a bit harsh for he kind of zeros in on one or two players. And but when he leaves, these players say he's the best manager they ever had. Like Paul Pogba got a lot of it while he was a man man united. A couple of years after Jose's gone, one of the best managers I've ever had. You're like, hang on, you practically went, you were having like fisticuffs with him on the on the training ground. How is that?

So it could it could be a double edged sword as in it could sort of like motivate the entire team and maybe sort of get us going in the right direction because he does do this defensive style very well. But he will be a giant distraction, which, Palace, we do not do that. We like to get on with our own business. We don't do singing in dark. We don't do all of this stuff. We just want to get the results and move on our lives.

He would be an interesting prospect. jar i think He's got this affinity with Palace fans who he used to use as a stick to beat Chelsea fans with when he thought they weren't being loud enough.
00:30:10
Dan Tanner
Yeah.
00:30:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
He'd be more like the Palace fans.

00:30:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think, yeah, you're right. ah The key thing with what a hinge-on with Jose is that the most important thing to him is always himself rather than the success of the club. Whether that kind of quest for um glory,
00:30:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah self-fulfillment can that that can propel a club to great things. that He is a decent manager but can also completely destroy a club as he makes himself the centre of this circus and kind of keeps himself in the news and the headlines um as a priority rather than protecting the players or seeing him spending some time doing his tactics and that. But you know, it'd be funny. He does know something about the sport. he's no He's not a complete clown. ja i So yeah as you say, it could could go either way. um I was just going to suggest, I don't think Liz Truss has got a job yet. And January is approaching. We thought Simon Jordan's management of the finances was bad. Don't want to know. But um yeah.
