Introduction to 'The Fetus' Movie

00:02:32
Speaker
I watched their movie on Sunday and I'm like, okay, now I'm i'm more curious about the movie than anything else. Any which way, the movie is called The Fetus.
00:02:44
Speaker
And we have the, I believe the director writer, Joe Lamb.
00:02:52
Speaker
hey Joe, what's happening? How are you? right, Brian. Thanks for having me on your show. Absolutely. Absolutely. Thanks for joining us. Who else we got?
00:03:02
Speaker
uh i don't want to butcher her is it ally dylak like yeah did i say it right i was gonna say it i might have butchered it but i would have said it right for once people in the comments are saying hello hello everyone and and there's a hello hey joe from amber hopmeister amber is awesome oh yes She said you should hear her bestie.
00:03:35
Speaker
I think she's talking about about Ali. Amber is the one that me talk to Ali to begin with because I was curious about the movie anyways.
00:03:50
Speaker
Colin's on. What's up, Colin? How are you, buddy?
00:03:55
Speaker
No, you're my bestie. There you
00:04:01
Speaker
so ah So Mark got to watch the film this Sunday. ah Was it this Sunday? No, it was last Sunday because this Sunday. This Sunday is the Super Bowl. no latin No, this last Sunday, i actually looked for the film, but I must not have searched the right spot. because i told you You are aware that I told you it was on Prime.
00:04:23
Speaker
No, I looked on Tubi for some reason. No, I saw their movies. Sorry, guys. this one i mean Prime, it was... $4.99 to rent. There you go. Okay. $10 to own it, I think it is, or $11. Even better, if you go to the website, thefetusfoam.com, Joe has it set up where you can find all the links right at the top of the page. Okay.
00:04:50
Speaker
Yeah, well, I tried to find the book on Amazon, and it wasn't there.
00:04:59
Speaker
it's not on amazon it's it's on our website yeah i found that out because i was because i was gonna i was gonna buy it if it was on amazon because there would have been know i could have got it the next day or so um but you can go to the website then and and go ahead and get it there mark yes so then i can get it autographed yeah it does come autograph check that out Bonus.
00:05:31
Speaker
Bonus. So, so let's talk about this film and and in in how how we came up with the brainchild for this. So Joe, I'll let you start with this one here. All right. Well, the feed is something where I wanted to show something that I hadn't seen before in a horror film.
00:05:56
Speaker
I'm sure you guys are used to, you know, seeing like a villain or Some kind of, you know, force going after the humans and we're chasing them all the time. And i was like, well, you know, why don't we, what if we put that inside the human and make that something that's dangerous and inescapable and evil.

Concept and Inspiration Behind 'The Fetus'

00:06:16
Speaker
And it's like something you just don't want.
00:06:19
Speaker
But at the same time, what if it was like, it could grow to become good, even though it's doing all these bad things coming out and attacking people. And that was like, okay, it was like, there's a moral dilemma there. So that I found that pretty interesting. And then I thought, well, what grows inside humans? Well, fetuses. Okay, well, there you go.
00:06:40
Speaker
We're gonna call it the fetus and then we're gonna develop this whole story around it and pretty much make it into a horror, horror comedy movie. So which became my first one, my directorial debut.
00:06:50
Speaker
So Oh, I mean, the first time I seen it, you know, when I seen the fetus come out and attached to the cord and all that. I'm like, what the?
00:07:02
Speaker
And I, quite honestly, when I, when I first, I can tell you the reaction when I first started watching the movie, my wife asked me if, and I'm not trying to be, you know, anything about it, but my wife first, cause she wasn't in the room. She asked me to see if I was watching porn.
00:07:22
Speaker
yeah but but Mark is notorious evidently for watching porn guys. No, no, no, no, no. no no no it's just It's funny because she couldn't hear anything else or she couldn't see it. So, you know, the first, you know, minute or so, that's what you hear.
00:07:41
Speaker
And I'm like, okay. And then quite honestly, to watch the trailer would benefit, you know, Brian a little bit. So how about this?
00:07:52
Speaker
Let's watch the trailer first before we get any more into this. Tell me. Let's go.
00:08:00
Speaker
You're pregnant. That can't be right. He always wears a condom. Oh, shit. Have you been lying to me? Whoa, whoa, wait a second. Do you remember when I told you that my body doesn't work the same as everyone else's?
00:08:19
Speaker
By the way, I should tell you few things about my dad. He's a bit particular.
00:08:29
Speaker
I was more a cat person. Are you gay? I don't think your dad and I see eye to eye. doesn't really like anyone. Hey, hey, hey!
00:08:42
Speaker
It's time.
00:08:44
Speaker
Dad, help me, Dad! If we don't feed it, it will start sucking on her blood to survive. You can't get birth to this thing. Of course not.
00:08:55
Speaker
been freaking out since this morning. I really thought you would grow up normal. You ain't family.
00:09:06
Speaker
You are the turd in the west.
00:09:13
Speaker
um really die getting birth
00:09:35
Speaker
Amber says such an awesome film. So going to guess she's already seen it too. Well, damn, I'm i'm slow. i guess I got it. It looks really good. It looks really, really good. So that's your premiere film. That's the first one you've ever done, Joe.
00:09:50
Speaker
My first. Yeah. I mean, I did a bunch of shorts before then, but yeah. The first feature. Wow, man. That that looks good. Looks really good. Who did the. i nothing You didn't see nothing yet. You have to watch the movie to understand the rest of it.
00:10:04
Speaker
Well, just a little bit of the, like where the, the cord of the, the umbilical cord is coming out. Like who did the effects for that? How did that, how did that work out? We have a guy with a team in Bogota, Columbia. Yeah.
00:10:18
Speaker
yeah Yeah. He's, he's, he's won the equivalent of special effects makeup, like in Columbia, but it's like, it's like the Oscars is the equivalent in Columbia, like twice in a row.
00:10:32
Speaker
um just before he did our film. So he literally built everything practically. I mean, this is the actual fetus with umbilical cord that he created for the movie.
00:10:45
Speaker
Literally everything you see in the movie was made as a practical effect, except accept there's only one shot that is not, but everything else is literally a physical, tangible thing that the actors were able to perform against.
00:11:02
Speaker
Okay. Allie, let's talk about your your ah assistance in this film. and like What was your role? I do the social media for the fetus.

Merchandise and Production Timeline

00:11:15
Speaker
So Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, anything that comes through goes through me.
00:11:21
Speaker
And then I help Joe with merch ideas, whatever questions he has for So, so what ideas are we doing out there for, for the, for the fetus?
00:11:34
Speaker
I see the hat. See the hat. We got the shirt. There's, I mean, there's a lot of, there's a lot of merch. It's got to get its own merch though.
00:11:46
Speaker
Yeah. We even have these ah key chains. These are replicas that made by winter score. Okay. Allie's good friend. And so you can actually get it, but only there's only one place you can get it. You know, i mean, I'll share it if your listeners want to put in the chat. If they really want it, then write in the chat. I'll tell you where to get it.
00:12:11
Speaker
But other things like here.
00:12:15
Speaker
We got a mini posters like this. Okay. This is a hand-painted design from Tony Vingle, who's a artists well known in the horror community and of course we got the big posters like that we've got condoms we actually made condoms that are approved we got the dvd coming out yeah dvd is okay the the handbag the fetus handbag they've got marlava's face on one side bill mostly on the other
00:12:51
Speaker
ah And like you mentioned before, the book, the book is that literally it's over 300 page behind the scenes making of the movie. Literally just how we put this production together, development, funding, writing, casting, all the way through merchandise, distribution, post-production, because I wanted to commemorate my first movie was with sharing the journey with everybody. so
00:13:20
Speaker
So how much how much do you think you put into it as far as time? Not money wise, but time wise? Do you think you put more than a year into it? Or?
00:13:33
Speaker
oh God. this was some fun i drew a year Into it. So I think Joe's put a lot more than that. More than a year? Yeah.
00:13:44
Speaker
So how how long did it come? How long did it take for it to come together for you guys?
00:13:53
Speaker
your audio is out. Joe, you're muted again.
00:13:59
Speaker
it was working just fine. Joe has a curse. Every time we do a live, something happens. Nothing. Hold on. No. yeah wait Wait, wait, wait, wait. Talk. Say something.
00:14:11
Speaker
Yes. You're good. It's working? Okay, cool. All right. So, it's ah It was five years from the beginning of the start of writing it because it was it took one year to write this thing, like 45 drafts. it was just It was a monster.
00:14:30
Speaker
um And then it was ah you know like three years production because we would It went out again. How did it go out again?
00:14:44
Speaker
I have no idea. It didn't touch anything. told you it was a curse. Hey, Clint.
00:14:52
Speaker
Nothing. Nope. No audio.
00:15:01
Speaker
No audio. Nothing.
00:15:07
Speaker
You're on your phone?
00:15:11
Speaker
You can do it on in your phone. Yeah, you you want to put it on your phone? Yeah, put it on your phone.
00:15:18
Speaker
right, guys, while we're working out the audio for Joe, you got plenty of time, plenty of time. beautiful no Audio. I think Joe's going to drop the the computer and go to the cell phone.
00:15:29
Speaker
And while he's doing that, we'll talk to Ali. So, Ali, tell us a little bit about yourself. What do you want? Well, how did you how did you become to get involved with the with the fetus film and and all that?
00:15:46
Speaker
It's a funny story. I'm ready. Okay. So I started a fan club after Terrifier 2 came out because I was obsessed with Sienna. Absolutely obsessed with Sienna.
00:15:58
Speaker
And I joined a group, which I'm sure you've heard of, called Adkiss. And while I got really upset because there was no representation for Sienna in the group, it was all about art, art, art, art which I get. I understand art.
00:16:14
Speaker
Totally good. But Sienna was fucking amazing. Sorry. Absolutely amazing. So I got upset. I created a fan club. In creating this fan club, I started doing like digging before work in the morning in the parking lot. You know, when you wait, you know, in the morning, sit there listening to music, digging everything up on Lauren Lavera.
00:16:36
Speaker
And eventually I found the fetus. So I was trying to figure out what was going on in the fetus and I couldn't find anything, but I found the website. So I went on the website, sent a message and asked if there was ah any information as to what was going on, you know, any updates.

Ali's Involvement and Sequel Possibilities

00:16:56
Speaker
And Joe essentially asked for help and I've been hearing help ever since. Okay.
00:17:06
Speaker
Amber says you're a badass. She only says that because she's my bestie. She's like a ninja when it comes to the, so you do all the socials and shit for, for everybody.
00:17:16
Speaker
You should do the socials for me. Cause like Mark does ours. And i I just feel like, do we, do we have enough content out there? Like just wondering, just, just asking for a friend.
00:17:31
Speaker
name park mark Mark actually does really good. I think he's playing a little bit around with the, with the AI stuff. Yeah, I was having fun with that. I liked those. Those were kind of... Every time I... Before I sent anything out, I would send it to her and show her.
00:17:48
Speaker
And she was getting a kick out of some of them. Oh, yeah. They were funny, too. Some of them were way out there, but... Oh, yeah. But, like, they were still entertaining. Let's talk about... All right. You guys hear me now?
00:18:01
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. Oh, yeah. We can hear you. Okay, great. And I just want to say that, you know... When Ally asked that, she asked a question when she reached out just yeah about the fetus. She was like, what's the status of the film over a year ago? And I saw that fan page that she created. and and i you know i And I wasn't doing anything with the social media. i was just like terrible at it, actually.
00:18:27
Speaker
and I saw her passion ah for for horror films, and especially with ah you know Lauren Lavera's character in the Terrorfire series. And I said, would you be open doing it for us, for the fetus? And, you know, I think, Ali, you kind of freaked out, I believe, and didn't believe it was I thought he was scamming me Yeah, I like... I thought it was a legitimate scam.
00:18:51
Speaker
I made him pay me up front in order to prove that it was real. but i did Yeah, but Allie's been great. You know, she's the one that when fans send the comments or DMs, she responds to them right away, you know? Oh, yeah.
00:19:09
Speaker
Don't worry. Don't worry. in my My laptop. I always look at my laptop. Okay. Okay, I'm good. I'm not going to mess with anything. so But, yeah, so she's she's, you know, part of the Fetus family. so Awesome. So for Fetus, too, you've got a spot for her?
00:19:25
Speaker
Somebody's got an echo. I put a what? I've said what is to when you do part two to the movie, right? you'll You'll have a spot for Ali. Oh, we can work conversations about it. you know work We can work something out. You're trying you're trying to get something out of them, how bright?
00:19:44
Speaker
Yeah, was just you know just a question. part you coming is there uh is there a sequel or a prequel so so just from the little bit that you get in the um in the trailer um like i don't know if anybody else caught it but she literally says my body's not like everybody else's body like everybody's body so she already i think she already knew that there was going to be something deadly or something not right right
00:20:19
Speaker
Is that right? when Did she already know about this fetus creature? She has. I kind of want to say, like, you'd have to watch the movie.
00:20:31
Speaker
As for the listeners, you know, I don't want to spoil anything and and in in that regard. But she knows that there's something her body's, and ah again, like not like everybody else's. Just the way from what she how she was growing up as a kid, it's just not, it's different. Like, it accelerates faster than normal.
00:20:50
Speaker
Okay. You've seen the condom in the in the trailer. yeah Yeah, no, I saw that. Well, i mean come on. You definitely, I'm going to tell you, you're definitely going to have to watch this one.
00:21:03
Speaker
I'm going to. we we actually, Stacey and I were going watch it, but like I said, i i went to Tubi because I was like, it's a horror film. And so it's got to be on Tubi. And I type it in. I'm like, I can't find it.
00:21:15
Speaker
and then Why didn't you ask me where it was at I don't know. I just decided I was going to go do other things. You get a Facebook message. i would have told you right away.
00:21:25
Speaker
doesn't use that stuff that's what that's what he has me for that yeah literally literally if you look at them if you look at my socials when's the last time i posted anything on facebook like i don't really post anything on facebook and unless it's mark posting from what mark i don't even know how to use what's that thing the instagram i i do it from his account don't have a clue literally I literally opened up... We opened the account and i was just like, oh, dude, we got to make friends with everybody. Oh, this person wants to be my friend. And it was all female. So i was like, oh, this is great.
00:21:58
Speaker
Yeah. So now I'm going through it and deleting that some of the females off there that... My wife was very upset with me. And he blamed it all on me. It was 100% your fault. You just said, just let everybody join the club. You left him unattended. It's your fault.
00:22:15
Speaker
Yeah. So now I... now i I do all of talking shit stuff. And then Brian's Instagram, you know, it works.
00:22:26
Speaker
Yeah. Brian's Instagram is not Brian. It's definitely talking shit market. Serial. That's why I've been deleting certain ones off of there, too. um What ah so you said you did some short films, Joe. What what short films have you done?
00:22:43
Speaker
Anything that anybody might know?
00:22:47
Speaker
um I mean, they're not... Most people don't watch short films, to be honest. but So unless you're setting the festivals and then the people there are watching it or sometimes they'll come across it online.
00:23:01
Speaker
um i did i did about 12 short films because it's mostly that like to really cut your teeth to get better as a director. My last one, my most prominent one,
00:23:13
Speaker
was the action thriller and it and it won 56 awards. Whoa. And after that, and also getting, seeing the audience reaction and just everyone's attention being held for 15 minutes straight. I just knew, i was like, okay, this is it.
00:23:28
Speaker
I don't need to make short films anymore. It's time for a feature. And so that last one, it was called fugitive zero and it's, anyone wants to watch it fugitive zero.com. You can watch it for free there. It's actually pretty good. I liked it a lot.
00:23:42
Speaker
would Would you consider taking any of those short films and doing a feature length film out of any of those? That was the plan for that one. Okay. And I like the concept. It deals with the alternative to the criminal justice system.
00:23:58
Speaker
Okay. So my films always have some kind of, you know, social commentary that's that's going on.

Future Projects and Reflections

00:24:04
Speaker
um And it was intended to be a proof of concept for a movie, but the producer that I had sent that to at when I was at Virtual Cannes Film Festival during COVID, he looked at it, he loved it, but he said, like, Joe, I can't back you for this. This is like a three to $5 million dollars movie for your first movie.
00:24:22
Speaker
oh yeah why don't we do a horror film for your first one? And then that's how we developed the fetus. But yeah, eventually,
00:24:31
Speaker
I'm writing something that is a sci-fi action thriller besides the fetus. Okay. I mean, the fetus two, sorry. Twinsy. The fetus two.
00:24:42
Speaker
Yeah. So there is there is a part two coming. I knew it. You know, as long as enough people watch the fetus and buy the merch, we'll be able to make a ah part two.
00:24:57
Speaker
Is it warranted, Mark? Do you believe a a part two is warranted?
00:25:03
Speaker
We have some ideas. It just depends on the ideas that they come up with, because quite honestly, i mean you could do it without doing the same people.
00:25:16
Speaker
i and Because the story that how they ended it, I thought they ended it fine. OK, so it leaves it open for another chapter. mean cook Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out and I'm going to I'm not going to spoil it exactly.
00:25:32
Speaker
because i'm I'm just sort of curious on this part, on who came up with the concept of how the the man in whatever you wanna call her, constipated to have the kid?
00:25:47
Speaker
Who came up with that idea? It was 100%, Joe. anyway Yeah, it was so when I was writing it I mean, I thought, well, yeah.
00:25:59
Speaker
how does one and impregnate a demon that's and i mean a little bit of spoilers but a demon that's stuck in a hole and i thought it'd be funny to just show it i mean was it definitely it was definitely funny Well, I'm glad you laughed because we've we had some test screenings you know where someone says, Joe, you know what it was all good. And then when it got to that scene, I laughed. It's like, I don't think that's what you're intending. And I'm like, that's exactly what I'm intending. Yeah, it's a horror horror comedy kind of thing, right?
00:26:37
Speaker
yeah I think some people take it too seriously. OK. And there's you know some people, horror has so many subgenres. And I think some people, they want to be scared in horror films. Mm-hmm.
00:26:49
Speaker
Um, the fetuses, I don't think that's what it, what it does to people. It's more like gross shock and, and, uh, and it's funny, but not everybody gets my kind of humor too, which is, which is weird. Everybody's sense of humor is, is probably a little bit different.
00:27:07
Speaker
Uh, this question I left up here for a minute, just so I could read it here. So will we have more film awards and convention appearances for the fetus this year?
00:27:17
Speaker
and that's a no no more No more words because we didn't really go out into the film festival circuit. We left it to... I did a lot of film festivals for my shorts.
00:27:31
Speaker
And we didn't do it because we had you know, two stars and in our movie, Bill Mosey Lauren Libera. And it's kind of like, you know, why not leave it to the, you know, more of the the films that don't have any name recognition?
00:27:48
Speaker
um So that decision was made by our team. And I just said, OK, that's fine. So but conventions, there's ah there's a good chance. where We're considering some right now.
00:28:02
Speaker
OK. Yeah, but most of it right now is actually we're doing a lot on online. with something called theultimatehorrorgiveaway.com. So if anyone wants to go there who's listening, you can actually enter and we do a giveaway every single month and it's it's presented by the fetus.
00:28:20
Speaker
It's something that we you know give back to the horror community to win prizes of you know every month, a different set of horror collectibles that includes some items from the fetus, but a lot of other well-known horror movies.
00:28:35
Speaker
ultimate or giveaway.com allies put that up there for everybody so copy and paste write it down take a screenshot whatever you need to do but I like free so didn't you guys just get away so you guys gave away some stuff the other day didn't you on the first I did yeah because I was actually watching part of that Yeah, we do an Instagram live, Ali and I, on the first of every month on Instagram. with us And ah yeah, we do ah we do several giveaways, like every 15 minutes, and then we have special guest appearances on there.
00:29:15
Speaker
So yeah, it's the fetus film. Well, check this out. So yeah I don't know if you heard this or not, Joe, but Mark and I have a our third year anniversary show coming up.

00:32:16
Speaker
We're going to to music from Richie Ramone.
00:32:23
Speaker
i don't remember what song I picked. It is a cover song, though, but I know I picked it, and I sent it to Mark. It's... I think Enjoy the Silence.

00:39:10
Speaker

00:46:32
Speaker
Sorry, working. Oh, yeah, of course you're working. It is Florida, Brendan says. ah Not Florida, says Jeff. Ooh. All right, I think we got, we're missing one or two people. This trying to be different. oh We're only missing Amanda. All

00:47:01

00:47:13
Speaker
she know know No Florida connection.
00:47:19
Speaker
No Florida connection. That was Mississippi, guys. Mississippi. All right. And let's see. We got one more. Last one.
00:47:30
Speaker
Man says he was fired for revealing company warned of layoffs if Biden wins.
00:47:40
Speaker
Man says he was fired for revealing company warned of layoffs if Biden wins. So this took place some time ago. so really thought you were going to do that one that you sent me earlier. I'm going to say Florida.
00:47:56
Speaker
we'll We'll do that as a bonus one. Not Florida. Joe says Florida. Allie says Florida. Florida. Not Florida. Not oh you but not Florida. Not Florida. Okay. so I got two not Florida's. I feel like that's a Midwest thing.
00:48:11
Speaker

00:48:18
Speaker
ah We'll find out when I read the headline again. all right, guys, let's see what the, what's going on over here in the comments. Clint says that's Florida. Yeah.
00:48:30
Speaker
Brendan says Florida.
00:48:34
Speaker
Waiting on two. Here we go. Jeff says Florida. And y'all talk about me in Mississippi. lady Now we are.
00:48:48
Speaker
All right. And Amanda says not Florida. I sound like a broken record. Let me read it for you guys one more time, this time with the full headline. Florida man says he was fired for revealing company warned of layoffs if Biden wins.
00:49:05
Speaker
That was, in fact, Florida. Okay, this last one is a bonus question that I'm going to read. I got to get my glasses because I can't see.
00:49:16
Speaker
well Well, so far, Florida sounds like a great place to live. Yeah, we live there. Florida's That's why they do it. All right. Let's see, Mark. I sent that to you on Messenger?
00:49:29
Speaker
Yeah.
00:49:32
Speaker
Bear with me, guys. Let me find this thing I sent Mark earlier. Hey, Brendan, you got two right. It's okay, Amanda. I suck too. Okay. Here we go. This one's a little bit lengthy, but I'm going to read it.
00:49:44
Speaker
Woman charged after refusing to leave cruise ship because vacation wasn't over. And that is in quotes. A woman was charged after authorities said she refused to disembark a cruise ship, insisting her vacation was not finished and she was not emotionally prepared to return to land.
00:50:03
Speaker
According to the officials, the ship had completed its scheduled voyage and was in the process of clearing passengers when a woman allegedly declined multiple requests to leave. Crew members say she remained seated, surrounded by luggage, calmly explaining that she was still on vacation.
00:50:23
Speaker
Ladies and gentlemen, the only question I have for you guys is this Florida or not Florida? 100% Florida and my guess is she's rocked.
00:50:36
Speaker
Yeah. They got cruise ships going out there. Yeah. I mean, there's cruise ships that go from all over the place. bret Brendan says Florida. Lindy says that's every cruise I take. She ain't. get ah that fucking vote That's everything Lindy does in life, though. She has not dealt with vacation.
00:50:57
Speaker
Was it her? Are you the one in the headlines, Lindy? We could have been. It doesn't give us the person's name. So you got Brendan say in Florida. You got Clint say in Florida.
00:51:10
Speaker
You've got... I wouldn't be surprised though. If she were from Alaska, who wants the hell? Yeah. Joe, did you say Florida or not Florida on that one? Florida with all the other headlines for Florida. Yeah. I'm going with Florida.
00:51:26
Speaker
So you guys see the trend that's happening, right? You notice the trend, right? All right. And then Jeff says, yes, it's Florida. And of course, miss Amanda, it is Florida.
00:51:36
Speaker
Ladies and gentlemen, you're a hundred percent accurate on this. It's Florida. That is a Florida woman who refused to disembark a ship because her vacation ain't over.
00:51:48
Speaker
Which one? It doesn't tell me. Dang, I was hoping it was a great recommendation. Listen, I'm telling you, like TripAdvisor, she probably gave him five stars.
00:51:59
Speaker
I hope it was ShipRocks because now I want to go. So would you like to know who won? Who won, Mark? Clint. Clint. Yeah, Clint. but only got One wrong.
00:52:11
Speaker
If he sends me his address, I will send him some decals. You heard him, Clint. It's not the man did. Between Allie and and Joe, Joe won.
00:52:29
Speaker
Congratulations, Joe, on the big win there. ah right. Be prepared for your decals. They they should arrive. Oh, Carnival Triumph. So it was Lindy.
00:52:39
Speaker
She called you snitch already. Stop telling people. That's fantastic. um So, Joe, before before we end our show, and that's coming up really quick and I apologize, but we want to know a little bit more about the

Production Changes and Filmmaking Insights

00:52:57
Speaker
fetus film. So what I wanted to ask was when you guys were doing concept and stuff, what parts kind of changed for you? Because I know a lot of directors and and um and writers and stuff say like, hey, when we first started filming,
00:53:16
Speaker
we must have shot this like four times before we got the best, you know, because we changed this or that. Did you change a lot of details in the movie?
00:53:28
Speaker
o The only major change that we did was was an extended ending. And it's it's because when we filmed it and we did the test screenings,
00:53:42
Speaker
u huh towards the end people they were on board they were on the roller coaster ride just locked in and then suddenly it just ends they're like what so people got kind of pissed they were like yeah nah they wanted more they were they were enjoying it and then it's just like like what which it's like it's like being on a roller coaster ride that ends too soon well it's like oh my god okay go raise more money write additional scenes and then we went back to Pennsylvania to film it. So that was ah that was tough. It's not every day that you know you you deliver a movie prematurely, no pun intended, but that's that's what it felt like.
00:54:22
Speaker
So, you know. Mark, you saw the movie. How would you have felt if all of a sudden Bill jumps in and that was the end?
00:54:36
Speaker
I would have said, what the fuck? Yeah. Okay, I got you. That would have been the first question out my mouth is, how the hell did you end it that way? aye are Is there going to be a two?
00:54:47
Speaker
That's how I would have asked that question. like i mean That's what a lot of people are expecting. we We're expecting a part two. No, I'm not i was the way that it ended not. The way that they ended it, I i would not have expected a part two.
00:55:03
Speaker
not out of Not out of that story. Okay. You're going to do it a a different way. I could see it, uh, different characters doing it. Joe, have you, um, have you talked to the the folks over at cranked up TV to put the, to put it on cranked up TV?
00:55:21
Speaker
It's another streaming platform. I don't know if you've heard of it. We have a distributor that handles all of that. So okay right now we're in the phase of buying rent and then eventually you know it'll go to streaming.
00:55:34
Speaker
Okay. So, was it picked up tv streaming so it is yeah um i don't know who they charge i don't know if they charge the i don't know if they charge the production company or if they charge the people that want to watch the films because i think for us to get a subscription i think it's like 20 a month yeah we're still trying to get people to come from there to come on so yeah we're gonna get some folks from cranked up on and then uh we'll be able to sit down and chat with those folks and, and hopefully introduce them to all the, all you kind folks that have been on um and introduced your movies to them and say, Hey, listen, what about these folks? You know, what about these guys?
00:56:13
Speaker
We actually met them a couple times at different conventions. I have one of their shirts. I think we had a bumper sticker at one point because we were talking to them, but like Joe said, we're with where we're at.
00:56:28
Speaker
That's not, Yeah, not there yet. Yeah. yeah I gotcha. It could happen though, eventually.
00:56:36
Speaker
have anything do that, but... Eventually. Okay. Joe, would you have swapped out any actors or actresses in your film? Yeah. but Who would you have swapped out?
00:56:51
Speaker
but Myself. Yeah.
00:56:56
Speaker
and So I just think what happened was we had a we had a scene where there's a carjacking and the actor had a family emergency dropped out and I'm looking at the crew. I'm like, hey guys, who wants to step in?
00:57:14
Speaker
I'll give you some extra money to act in this scene. And nobody, like literally no, stepped up. And my cinematographer's like, Joe, you gotta do it. I'm like, oh, good.
00:57:25
Speaker
It was horrible. Yeah, like this is getting shot today. You got to do this. I just, oh, I was like sweating bullets the whole time doing it and just like, I don't know. I was i was a mess, but I mean, it worked out.
00:57:38
Speaker
People like it. It fits. They recognize me. They get a good laugh. So that was the first thing I said to you when I called you after I watched it the first time. So Joe says I'm better behind the camera than I am in front of it.
00:57:51
Speaker
Oh yeah. Yeah. You got the chops for it kid. Come on.
00:57:58
Speaker
Joe, ah joe how how old are you and how long have you been doing how how long youve been doing film? I think I'm 46 now. I think I'm 46. I love it.
00:58:08
Speaker
hopeful Yeah, I think. i I said that yesterday. I think I'm this old. and Brian, you're 48. Yeah. The only reason why I know that is because I'm the same age.
00:58:22
Speaker
And you said you're asking how long how long have I been doing it? Yeah. How how long have you been doing film? Oh, Brendan says you should have called him. He would have done it.
00:58:33
Speaker
would have done it too. but
00:58:37
Speaker
I don't know if you count. You're like a teenager. You're you're making school projects. i don't know if that counts. Who knows? That's where it starts. Yeah. OK. that's where it starts yeah okay So you yeah did you take classes in high school for for filmography or anything like that to do to do? No, oh there was just like I would have like school projects and sometimes but had a video camera and like I would record it and then show it in class.
00:59:07
Speaker
This is back in like when there was VHS tapes. Now, yeah, when you had the dual dials and you could you could kind of chop stuff in with the with editing that way. Is that what you're talking about? Yeah.
00:59:20
Speaker
Not how I edited. but help yeah it was literally, it was literally two VHS tapes, kind of like a big giant stereo. Right. Yeah. VHS tapes.
00:59:31
Speaker
And then I think maybe there was a third one. i don't I don't remember because I know that you could clip from one to another and you could back it up. You can speed it up.
00:59:43
Speaker
There was like a, it was like a turntable dial. is what I remember in high school. That was long ago, Brian. That was AV. That was AV Club, dude. That was a long time ago.
00:59:55
Speaker
Yeah, it was something like that. Or it was like two VHS and then it was like I'd play one, send it to the other, record I don't know. Yeah, yeah. So long ago. But I also went to film school as well.
01:00:07
Speaker
Okay. Pressured by my parents, you know, Asian parents. You've got to go to college. is ah call is but i was like, okay, if I just wanted to go right into the film industry. But they pushed me anyway. So hey it was fine. I guess, you know, I and learned to...
01:00:24
Speaker
be creative because I went straight into the industry. I probably would have been like a production assistant taken a long time to work my way up. um But instead I got to just work on short films, commercials, documentaries.
01:00:38
Speaker
Okay. Then okay, I'll just keep refining myself over the years until finally, you know, get to get to make movies one day. So, and I could have made movies when I was like late twenties.
01:00:52
Speaker
But it wouldn't have been very good, I'll be honest. Because it's hard. It's hard telling a good story. And when I watch movies, it's probably like nine out of ten of them I'm just, I don't like. and this Like the story doesn't line up to the to what's going on in the...
01:01:11
Speaker
well the Well, the problem for me is that because I've studied stories... that it ruins it for me, all right? Like, I can see the magic behind it. It's kind of like if you study architecture, you know how to build homes, you look at a house, and it doesn't it doesn't look like it's built right.
01:01:28
Speaker
Gotcha. just you just see You see the structure underneath, and that's the problem I have. So when a a story's not done right, i I'm so bored I tune out or I just fall asleep. And ah it's hard for me.
01:01:40
Speaker
The magic is is not the same. Yeah. hey Hey, Brian, I told you I'd eventually get Brett Wagner on here. It just took you forever.
01:01:52
Speaker
but a you know your He was supposed to be on in December, but he had to do a movie instead. What's more important, being on Talking Shit or making a movie? Come on, bro.
01:02:08
Speaker
We love you, Hopefully we can figure out a date for him to be on.
01:02:14
Speaker
Best. Best psycho killer ever. Can't wait to see him on Friday the 13th next month. Right on.
01:02:25
Speaker
Joe, would you give ah would you give final thoughts to anybody that's looking to get into not just working behind the camera, but what about actors and actresses? Do you do you have advice for those guys too?
01:02:41
Speaker
To get behind the camera? but just in general so yeah so any advice for the actors and actresses you know that are that are currently doing film and like oh you know what i want to be behind the camera or somebody new coming into it going you know what this is what i want to do yeah you gotta first one is you gotta you gotta make stuff when you write something find a way to film it doesn't matter how much money you have, you just, because you have to see how it translates, what you've written, how it translates onto the screen and test it out. you have to
01:03:18
Speaker
You need an audience to test out your work and see if it's actually working or not. Try not to keep it so hidden, because I know friends that They will write things, they won't show anybody, then they will film it and they will they still won't show anybody. There's no test screenings.
01:03:35
Speaker
And then they just start going out to festivals and I watch it and it's like, oh no, you could have fixed this and that and that and it would have been so much better. And the second thing is I always send everybody to my screenwriting teacher. His name is Corey Mandel.
01:03:51
Speaker
His website is coreymandel.net. And... ad transformed my writing. I just was writing for screen feature screenplays for you know a couple decades, going nowhere, pitching it to producers. Nothing was happening until I took his corpse. And then like that was it it. It unlocked everything for me.
01:04:11
Speaker
And I understood how to put a movie together and hold people's attentions from beginning all the way to the end, which is what I call the magic trick. OK.
01:04:23
Speaker
so So you follow the narrative as far as following his guidance and stuff like that. um And then, so what is the trick? it's And you can't say it's magic.
01:04:36
Speaker
You can't say it's all magic. ah No, there's a science there's a science behind it. Yeah. And because of that, his students, ah like so many of them, find a lot of success in television and movies.
01:04:47
Speaker
if They've won Oscars. Oh. Even some of the big you know big time screenwriters, you know he's got quotes. they've got They've given him quotes of his teachings. it's just I've read a lot of screenwriting books.
01:05:04
Speaker
I've gone to a whole bunch of teachers, but he's the one that just broke it all down for me. okay And it works. okay Yeah, Corey Mandel.
01:05:15
Speaker
Okay. And then since you were a first time actor, right? Doing you' doing your cameo. What advice would you give somebody doing their first time acting?
01:05:29
Speaker
oh God, I don't have the advice for that. You got to. You got to. You are put on the spot. hey you know what His advice is somebody else do it, not me. yeah I think that's what he said, yeah.
01:05:42
Speaker
Carry cash so you can just throw it at people to get them on the camera. ah Jeez, oh man. Just find a way through it.
01:05:54
Speaker
and don't know, drink some caffeine and just ask people to reassure you that you're doing a good job or have them tell you the truth so you can do it the right way. I don't know, I really don't know. I'm not an actor. I really- i think I don't know how people how actors do what they do, I'll be honest. It's just it's nerve-wracking.
01:06:14
Speaker
He said, call Brendan. You call Brendan. Brendan, I think, wants to get get into one of the films that night, I think. Brendan, we might have a role for you. you know Get a hold of me. ill I'll tell you who to talk to. ah so How many takes did that take for you?
01:06:34
Speaker
Was it one-take kind of thing? or to do Did you flub up? or for your for your whole cameo. How did it go? It was ah between three to five takes.
01:06:48
Speaker
Okay. That's not terrible, right? wasn't like 37 takes like in a movie. No, no. no Okay. Well, that's a good thing. i mean, four or five is probably what most people do, right? I would assume like even the best actors are going to be like, oh, got to do that again. I messed up.
01:07:10
Speaker
Oh, but let's see how many times it takes us to do ours. Yeah, no, we're going to be fine. i have no clue. You guys are shooting something, huh? That's what it sounds like. So, yeah, Mark and I were actually talking shit was invited to be a part of 92 Hours, the movie.
01:07:30
Speaker
It is a sci-fi thriller. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. um So Mark and Mark and my role is obviously it's going to be remote, but there's a lot of they're looking for a lot of extras right now, I think, to go to Chicago. And we are we are actually we're called Talking shit intergalactic news.
01:07:52
Speaker
Intergalactic news or intergalactic radio. Nice. OK. might be right. It's to be fun. It's going to be fun. We're, uh, we're really trying to push that one too. So, uh, stay tuned guys. We'll talk more about that in the not so distant future. Um, in the meantime, Joe, Ali, we've invited you here and you gave us over an hour of your time and we greatly appreciate that.

01:11:51
Speaker
light paper Because then I'd be asking who's Cosmo and who's Wanda. No. Neither. Neither. But yeah, as Devlin was saying, i will be headed down to Kentucky.
01:12:07
Speaker
Okay. The last week I wanted to hang out with Devlin and Amber and a few other familiar faces to be filming Forsaken.
01:12:19
Speaker
It's a vampire movie where Amber will be our queen and I get to tell everybody to listen to her. Joe, you just have the greatest- the greatest um it told you he's got a curse.
01:12:36
Speaker
What is the curse? Every time we have a live, his mic, he has to switch. It doesn't matter. It's just entertaining. Switch through the phone. It's all good. Did you hear us?
01:12:48
Speaker
He can't hear us now. He has no audio. I told you. Nothing. Well, you're not talking. You can't tell. Wait, I'll do that.
01:13:00
Speaker
Yeah, he he can't hear us, I don't think. We can hear him. All right. Well, are we good? You happy? Ready to rock out?
01:13:13
Speaker

You don't remember. I remember. What did I say? let' Do a replay. I don't know. I basically just tell everybody, like, listen, just if you feel like you want to do something, just go and do it. All you can do is fail. But you don't know unless you try, right? It's all you can do. and Oh, yeah yeah. I was just thanking you guys. But, yeah, I would say to anybody who wants to create,
01:15:14
Speaker
and are and are afraid to. I just never picked up a camera or written anything or filmed anything or acted anything. like
01:15:25
Speaker
What have you got to lose?
01:15:28
Speaker
for it. And not only that, think about who you're going to impact on the other side. Because as filmmakers, for me anyways, I don't do this for myself.
01:15:43
Speaker
These stories live in me. I've seen these stories, but I spent the five years to make the fetus because I want other people to see it. And that's the thing that, for me, carries me through all the hardship to get the work out there.
01:16:01
Speaker
It's the audience. It's all about the audience, the fans, the horror fans.
01:16:08
Speaker
a lot of the horror fans have been absolutely fantastic. I don't think that, do you think there's a way to disappoint a horror fan? I mean, yes. Oh, there are ways. Just because he's a huge Friday the 13th guy. And and no it's not just that. I mean, you can make a horror film and you can make it, you can make it the best that you can. And you're still going to disappoint somebody no matter what you can have the best Best movie out there.
01:16:41
Speaker
And you're still going to disappoint somebody. Because not you can't make everybody happy. No matter what. percent correct No, but you got to try, right? Oh, no, agree. You can try. But you're just going to have that one person a percentage of people that's not going to be happy. No matter what you do.
01:17:01
Speaker
Yeah. Especially Mark when it comes to Friday the 13th. Anything. Anything. No, they changed Jason and it was game over. Oh, hell. Oh, come on. No, the way that they make new Jason look. and know he No, no.
01:17:16
