Why is Hell Not Regularly Taught?

Not something that people teach on regularly. It's not a topic that people typically teach on very well. i But Jesus spoke about it more than anyone else in the Bible. And if it's important to Jesus, it's got to important to us as well.

We're going to talk about the geography of hell. Hell is a spiritual world, but it does have certain distinct places and certain fixed places and locations.

Hell has different names in the Bible. One of them is Sheol, such as in Numbers 1630. Psalm 143 verse 7 calls the pit.

The Supernatural Realm of Hell

Different names. It's the same place.

Now, Ephesians tells us that the Old Testament, Old Covenant spirit realms were in the center of the earth.

You could get a drill and dig all the way to the Earth's core. You would not see them. They are supernatural worlds. They're not physical. You cannot see them with your physical eyes. You see them with your spiritual eyes. But the spirit realm existed before the physical realm did.

The physical realm was created on it overlaps with the spirit realm, which we've looked at before.

In the bowels... of the earth, overlapping the natural and the supernatural, the physical and spiritual world, you have paradise. Some people call it Abraham's bosom.

That is where the Old Testament saints went, all the righteous dead before the cross of Jesus, all the way from Adam and Eve, right up until the thief whoja who died on Jesus' right, hanging on the cross himself.

They all went to a world called paradise. It is not heaven. It has never been heaven. It will never be heaven.
Levels and Torments in Hell

But it was very heavenly.

was gorgeous. it was beautiful. Adam of and Eve was there were there. Joseph and the amazing Technicolor Dream Ghost. Moses. Elisha.

Ezekiel. Isaiah. Jeremiah. Joseph, Mary's husband, Jesus' stepfather, all those heroes were there.

Below paradise, there was an impassable chasm, a gap. A gap you could not cross.

On the other side of that gap, on that chasm, was a gate. The gates of hell.
Jesus's Journey to Hell and Liberation of the Righteous

Beyond that gate was the world of hell, ah place of fire a place of place of torment, a place of pain.

But hell has levels. And the very bottom level has different names.

Despite being the bottom, it is called the Bottomless Pit.

It's called the Abyss. And it's called Tartarus. Three names, the same location.

Several months ago, we looked at the story of Noah and how some angels took on physical form, slept at human women and created the Nephil and created giants.

Those angels have been locked up in chains in Tartarus. That's where they are. They're in the bottomless pit. They're the abyss. They're trapped there.

The world of hell, the upper level, yes, there are demons there, but there are also people there. When people die, that's where they go.

Now, when Jesus died, he descended into all three. he had a very proactive three days. When Jesus died, he went into paradise and he took the righteous dead from paradise and he brought them up into the world of heaven. So King David's now in heaven. Adam and Eve are in heaven. Joseph's in heaven. Mary's husband's in heaven. Mary is in heaven.

All the righteous dead are in heaven now. No one's in paradise. Paradise is now empty. But in the Old Testament or before the cross, All the righteous dead went to paradise.

jesus died When Jesus died, he took them up, brought them to heaven, and that's where they are now.

So now the world of hell. Hell is not all fire and brimstone and sulfur. There is a place in hell that is actually a counterfeit heaven.

Sometimes people have near-death experiences. And if they're Indian, they might see Vishnu or Krishna or one of the other millions of gods.

If they are a Western European or a Canadian or an American, they might see Mary or one of the saints.

If they are from China, they might see Buddha. If they come from a Muslim country, they might see the counterfeit false prophet, Mohammed.

And interestingly, these creatures all tell them the same thing. Welcome to heaven. Don't be afraid of death. You are a good person. I've been alive a long time. going to be honest, I've never met a good person.

But it's not your time yet. So tell everyone back on Earth what you saw here. And then you've got people who, you know, who lived in China who come back, Buddha's real, Buddha's God.

Or they're Indian, they come back and they say, oh and you know, Vishnu or Krishna or whoever the heck that multi-limbed freak on the screen is, said that our religion is the right one.

And then what happens is they tell people, you know, that you're doing the right thing. There's no recognition of Jesus. There's no repentance. There's no acknowledgement the cross. There's no prayer. It's holy spirit.

And they die and basically they see what hell really looks like. Can people have a near-death experience and see Jesus? Yeah. But you know what?

He actually tells them the truth. He says, listen, you have lived a sinful life. I'm giving you a second chance here. Come on. live like Live for me. I died on a cross to wash you of your sins. Your sins have not been washed. Believe in me and they'll be clean instantaneously.

But with so many of these near-death experiences people have, they see all these different creatures, all these different gods who are demons. a And there's absolutely no...

pointing the way to Jesus. Even Holy Spirit points the way to Jesus. So if there's a supernatural being talking to you and you're not being pointed to the person of Christ,

it's probably not one from God. going to throw that out there.

And now let's see how the Bible describes the world of hell. Psalm 31 17.

Do not be ashamed of me, O Lord, for I have called upon you. Let the wicked be ashamed. Let them be silent in the grave. The word ashamed in Hebrew means let the wicked be pale, be disappointed, utterly dejected, confounded, very confused.

Let them be dealt with harshly. Let them feel shame. Let them feel moral failure. Public humiliation.

Let them feel dismayed. In the world of hell, people feel the weight of their shame and the totality of their moral failure.

And they're humiliated publicly. They're not alone. There are many demons looking at them. poking at them, sneering at them, and doing all sort of things that are shameful to mention. verse 117.

It is not the dead to praise the Lord, nor any who descend into silence. Silence, that's the hushed stillness of death. The oppressive silence that envelopes the grave.

The cessation of earthly speech and worship. People aren't having your normal run-of-the-mill conversation that they have on earth. And no one praises or worships God in hell. No one in hell is like, oh God, you're so amazing. who's inna that It's not to be heard there.

Psalm 139, verses 7 to 8 says, where can I go from your spirit, this Holy Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, the atmosphere, outer space, the world of heaven, you're there.

i hope he's in heaven. Otherwise, what's all this for? If I make my bed in the realm of the dead, you're there. What does that mean? That means Holy Spirit is in hell.

Holy Spirit is omnipresent. Holy Spirit is everywhere all at once. That includes the world of hell. That includes the lake of fire reality. Is he in pain? No, he's Holy Spirit. He's grand. He's okay.

Don't pray for his healing. He's not in need of it. He's okay. But in terms of in the abstract presence, he's there.

2 Thessalonians 1.9 says they will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.

So now this seems to be saying the opposite. This seems to be saying those who are in hell don't have the presence of the Lord. But Psalm 139 says that Holy Spirit's there. What does this mean?

It means Holy Spirit is spatially present in hell. but he is relationally absent. He's there in, think of how, you know, if you're having a conversation with somebody in your kitchen and they're just looking at their phone or looking at the window and they're not paying an iota of attention to what you're saying.

You just you're not really here, are you? What does that mean? It means that they are there physically, but they're not actually there with you emotionally. They're not connected to you.

That's what it means. Holy Spirit is spatially present, but relationally absent from those in hell.

Then we have Isaiah 14, verses nine to 11.

The realm, there this is when a king, the king of Babylon, de descends into hell. And this is hell's reaction. The realm of the dead below is all astir to meet you at your coming. There's a buzz, they've been told.

Red alert, red alert, king of Babylon's descending into hell. It rouses the spirits of the departed Rephaim. Some you might think, what the heck a Rephaim?

Rephaim is another the word for the Nephilim. The giants, the sons and daughters of angels and women in the days of Noah.

Some people say Nephilim are all around us Bull crap. We're literally told here that they're in hell. It rouses the spirits of the departed Rephaim to meet you.

All those who are leaders in the world. It makes them rise from their thrones. All those who are kings over nations. They will respond. They'll say to you.

You also become weak as we are You've become like one of us. All your pomp has brought down to the grave, along with the noise of your harps.

Maggots are spread out beneath you and worms cover you.

Spirits, spiritual bodies, which are metaphysical or physical in their own way, that are being tortured in hell, literally stand up and make fun of other powerful people who descend into hell.

They don't say, oh my goodness, I'm so sorry you're here. This is so terrible. Here, let's be friends. Let's encourage each other. We can get through this to get now. Like, ha!

You thought you were something special. You thought you were amazing. Yeah, good one. Well, so did we, and look where y'all ended up. They're spiteful. They're actually...

Spirits that are burning, that are being tortured, that have just been mauled and persecuted beyond human imagination, insult other human spirits who are going to go through the same thing.

That's hell. They're not compassionate for one another. They're not friends. They're not supporting one another. They're actually getting off on the idea of someone else going through what they've been going through.

And then you have spiritual creatures, demons that look like maggots or worms, um, covering the human spirits, probably entering into them, probably eating them off and vomiting them out again.

And, uh, Your spiritual body can be damaged. It cannot die. So it would, in very grisly fashion, be put back together again, just to be tortured and eaten and spewed out all over again.

You cannot kill a spirit. Isaiah 24, 22. They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit. And again, the pit is a name for help.

They'll be confined to a dungeon and punished after many days. Why do people have dungeons and torture chambers on the earth? Because it began in the spirit realm.

In Isaiah 38, 18, it says, For Sheol, which is hell, cannot thank you. Death cannot praise you. Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for your faithfulness.

Look at how grossly, massively screwed up planet Earth is. And yet, somewhere around the world, someone is praising Jesus, thanking Jesus, worshipping Jesus every single second of the day around the world at all times, twenty four seven

Now imagine what a world would look like where there is no worship, there is no praise, there is no acknowledgement of God's faithfulness, there's no faith, there's no trust in him, and a world where there is no hope.

Do you think planet Earth is bad when we've got two billion people professing to know Christ? Obviously a lot of them are just wrong or lying, but two billion professing to know Christ love the state of this planet.

Now imagine one with literally no worship, no praise, no thankfulness, no prayer, no faith, and no hope.

We can't even begin to imagine the fullness of what that would look like.

In Zechariah nine eleven hell is referred to as the waterless pit. There is no water to drink quench your thirst.

There's no clean, healthy water to pour over your body to ease pain or suffering.

It's a subterranean dungeon.

Jesus likens hell to the fires of Gehenna. Now you might think, what the heck is Gehenna? In Jesus' day, and Jerusalem was the capital city of Israel. You could technically say it still is today. You know, move over Tel Aviv.

Gehenna was on the south side of ancient Jerusalem, and it was a garbage dump.

In 2 Kings 23.10,

People worshipped the demonic god Malek, who would look like a cow, and they would burn their babies to that god. They sacrifice their children to those demons.

That still happens today. It's called abortion.

And in Jesus' day, the material in that dump was was burning all the time, all day and all night. And that material included everything from household rubbish to animal carcasses and even to convicted criminals.

What does hell look like? Looks like an abortion. It looks like A child being torn limb from limb, having their skull crushed and their brains vacuumed out with a hoover.

It looks like adult bodies being burned ceaselessly. It looks like rubbish. It looks like fire.

It looks like all of the insects and vermin that one could expect to find in a dump. To say nothing of the smell.

Matthew 7, 13. Again, this is Jesus speaking. Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction.

And most enter through it.

Through the cross, the way to the Father has never been wider. It has never been easier. And yet still, the vast majority of humans, with an act of their will, will choose to turn their back on Christ and to go through the wide, broad gate of hell.

And we'll cast them into the furnace of the fire. And they'll be weeping. I'm sure there is ceaseless weeping and gnashing of the teeth. I'm sure there are people gnashing their teeth and there's sure there are demons gnashing teeth at humans.

Matthew is written in Greek. So in Greek, a furnace is an enclosed structure for intense heat to consume what is refuse, what is rubbish, what is garbage, what is trash.

Matthew 24, 51. Then he will him to pieces. then he will cut him to pieces and assign him a place of hypocrites where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Again, you cannot kill a human spirit or a demonic spirit. A spirit is forever. But you can evidently chop it into pieces.

Well, demons can. Torture it. And we're not talking, you know, you decapitate a human and until they're dead, have have no more feelings. No. No. The spiritual body, they'll feel the pain.

And very grisly, wicked, horrific formation, they'll be reattached. They might get reattached to other people's bodies. They might get reattached to their head where their foot should be, or i know their mouth where their backside is. Whatever. Demons are gross.

Then Jesus will say to those on his left, depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. People were never supposed to go to hell.

The world of hell and Tartarus was created for the punishment of Lucifer and the demonic realm. But if people choose to be subservient to the demonic, complicit with the demonic, to work alongside the demonic, well then they suffer the same fate as the demonic.

Jesus doesn't send insects to hell just because they're insects. We're talking about demons that take on the form of insects.

Some people say, if God is such a loving God, why does hell exist? Well, don't blame the Father. John 5.22 says Jesus sends people there.

I died the death you deserved to. I was in a show trial, and I was found guilty, even though no two witnesses could agree on what the crime was.

I was beaten with rods, I was spat on, i was beaten to a bloody pulp. I received so many whiplashes most men would not have survived.

I was made to carry cross up a mountain. I had a crown of thorns plunged into my head.

i had nails rammed into my hands and my feet, and I hung there while I couldn't even physically breathe. He spoke seven times. I'm sure it was absolutely agonizing just trying to the words out of his mouth.

His mouth dried up and his tongue got stuck the roof of his mouth so he couldn't even talk. When he could form words, he asked for a drink and he was given vinegar, expired wine. And then he was stabbed in the side the heart of the spear just to top it all off.

And he says, you know, I did this for you. i did this to wash all your sins away. But you chose to be in love with your sin. I offered you eternity in a world. I made a world that is perfect, the world of heaven.

You back bit them, you betrayed them. You sowed dissension, you broke up a family unit.

No human gets to go to Jesus and tell him that he does not get to send them where their actions deserve. Believing in the finished work the cross and he erases all your sins.

Rewards you with more grace, more bounty, more plenty, more gifts than you could ever than any of us could ever begin to deserve. All of that is just one decision away.

And yet the vast majority of people turn the back of them.

Judgment lies with Jesus. Jesus knows what he did to buy us salvation. If people reject that gift squarely on them. That's how he sees it.

Romans chapter two, verse eight. But those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. What is wrath?

Wrath in Greek means indignation, violent passion, fixed opposition, extended personal exposure.

Demons who zero in on a certain person and fixedly, markedly oppose them for as long as the world of hell remains.

other words, anger in the Greek means wrath, fierceness. Indignation, rage, angry tempers, actions emerging out of strong impulses.

No demon hell looks at a person and gets passive. Pfft, that should be grand. That's true, I'll just leave you there in a dungeon for 100 years, you're fine, you're good. No. They will torture and destroy that person and they will get great relish in doing it.

nothing will bring them more happiness. Nothing will put a wider smile on that demon's face that day.

The next verse, Romans 2.9, there will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil, first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. Again, this is for those who reject the cross Jesus.

The word trouble, means in the Greek, there will be tribulation. There will be affliction. Anguish, distress, persecution. Some people say, the Bible never says people get tortured in hell. Well, look at the original a language and clearly it does.

External pressure. Some people say, oh, hell is just a place where, you know, you feel bad about what you did on the earth. No, the pressure is coming from without.

as well as within. Trouble in Greek translates as no way of escape.
