Finding Jesus in the Old Testament

00:00:44
Speaker
Why else are here? Alright, we're going to have a look today at Jesus in the Old Testament between 1 Kings, Proverbs, and Song of Songs.
00:01:00
Speaker
After this, we will be in the territory of the main prophets. And so A lot of people, when they read the Old Testament, they miss Jesus in it.
00:01:16
Speaker
They just don't see him. They see Melchizedek or God or Lord Almighty, and they just assume it's Father God. But in John 1.18, Jesus basically puts a pin in the balloon of that expectation.
00:01:34
Speaker
He said that by that stage, no one had ever seen Father God. But the one and only son who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the father, he has made him known.
00:01:48
Speaker
And similarly, in John 6, 46, he says, no one has seen the father except the one who's from God. Only

Solomon's Divine Dream

00:01:57
Speaker
he has seen the father.
00:01:59
Speaker
That means that all the times when God is seen, is spoken to, engaged, interacted with, In Joshua, in Judges, in Genesis, in Exodus, yadda yadda yadda.
00:02:12
Speaker
It's actually Jesus. It's God with skin on that they're talking to.
00:02:18
Speaker
So we looked last week at an overview on the exams, many of which were written by King David. The week before that, we looked at King David. 1 Kings 3, verses 4 to 15.
00:02:33
Speaker
versus four to fifteen A new king is sitting on the throne. David's son. Solomon. Born to David and through Bathsheba, the woman that, well, he murdered her first husband and then married her, Bathsheba.
00:02:56
Speaker
um But although Solomon came from a pretty hairy, sketchy background, and couple of the Most hated chapters in the Bible.
00:03:07
Speaker
and The Lord just loved him. mean, the word the name Solomon is quite close to the Hebrew word Shalom for peace. And he enjoyed tremendous years of peace while he was on the throne.
00:03:24
Speaker
And the hand of God was so beautifully and so generously and even legendarily extended towards him. So in 1 Kings 3, Verses 4 to 15, it says this.
00:03:41
Speaker
The king went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices, for that was the most important high place. And Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings that altar. At Gibeon, the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream.
00:03:56
Speaker
And God said, ask whatever you want me to give you. A lot of people remember this story. I do not think I have ever heard anybody teach that this happened in a dream.
00:04:09
Speaker
This is Jesus speaking to him in a dream. and it's not symbolic. It is a vision in a dream. It's really happening. Solomon answered, You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart.
00:04:26
Speaker
You've continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit to his throne on this very day. Now, oh Lord, my God. And again, no one had ever seen God, so talk about Jesus.
00:04:40
Speaker
You have made your servant king in place of my father, David. But i know I'm only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Humility, i love it.
00:04:52
Speaker
Your servant is here among the people you've chosen. ah great people. Too numerous to count a number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and distinguish between right and wrong.
00:05:06
Speaker
For who is able to govern this great people of yours? The Lord is pleased that Solomon had asked for this. So God said to him, since you've asked for this and not for a long life or wealth yourself, nor have you asked for the death of your enemies, but for discernment and administering justice, I will do what you've asked.
00:05:29
Speaker
I'll give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. You're going to be one of a kind, a one-off. Moreover, i will give you what you have not to ask for, but riches and honour, so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings.
00:05:48
Speaker
And if you walk in my ways and obey my statutes and commands as David your father did, I'll give you a long life. Then Solomon awoke

The Temple and Jesus's Symbolism

00:05:56
Speaker
and he realized it had been ah dream, but a powerful, amazing, mighty dream in which the Lord Jesus actually communicated with him and blessed him with a gift of wisdom and incredible wealth.
00:06:15
Speaker
Again, it's a classic story. A lot of people very quick to quote it, but not a lot of people actually to realize that Jesus is the one who had this conversation with Solomon and appeared to him in ah dream.
00:06:31
Speaker
Then in 1 Kings 6, verse 1, right through to the end of chapter 8, Solomon builds for the Lord a temple.
00:06:42
Speaker
Now it had been in his father David's heart to build a temple and the Lord responded, a have I ever lived inside a building? Hello? No.
00:06:56
Speaker
But even still, he gathered the materials together, yeah right down to the stones and stones that didn't even need to be and broken or altered. They were just perfect as is. So the hand of God is all over the building project.
00:07:13
Speaker
And after David transpired and went to be with his forefathers, Solomon constructed the temple.
00:07:22
Speaker
It was a one of a kind type building. Just... I... Heaven has a temple, if you read the book Revelation.
00:07:35
Speaker
Heaven has a temple. This is as close to the heavenly temple as anyone could have imagined building on the earth. The degree to which it thus brought the Lord glory was phenomenal.
00:07:51
Speaker
But even the temple itself and its furnishings all spoke to the person of Jesus. Let's start with the temple.
00:08:01
Speaker
You know, Jesus would tell the religious leaders in his day that he was going to destroy the temple and rebuilds it in three days.
00:08:12
Speaker
And they were like, no, but that stage wasn't Solomon's temple, it was Herod the Great's temple. And they were like, you know, oh my goodness, this is heresy, this is a terrible thing to say, ugh, did you hear him?
00:08:24
Speaker
But we're told that Jesus was talking about his own body, that the temple is the the house, the containment of the life-giving spirit of God.
00:08:37
Speaker
The temple had a place called the Holy of Holies. It was a space that only the high priest could go to after ritual purification, but it was hidden behind a curtain. People could not access it.
00:08:51
Speaker
It was too spout, was too powerful. A chest was put in there called the Ark of the Covenant, and a layer of the presence of God was within that Ark in power.
00:09:06
Speaker
There are times Jesus would sit on the Ark like a throne called the mercy seat. But a lay of the spirit was also in the Ark. And there are times when the leaders would consult of the Lord in the Ark for advice, for guidance on a disaster they're going through or on a military strategy.
00:09:31
Speaker
But when Jesus died, there was a massive earthquake. And next thing, that curtain, that veil was torn in two. And that was Jesus saying, I took a crown of thorns on my head for every wicked thought you've ever had.
00:09:51
Speaker
Vinegar in my mouth for every wicked word you've ever spoken. Nails in my hands for every wicked thing you've ever done. Nails in my feet for every wicked place you've ever gone.
00:10:06
Speaker
A cross on my back and whiplashes for every wicked thing you've ever carried.
00:10:14
Speaker
Blue bruises to purge away sin, to purge evil.
00:10:21
Speaker
And it is finished. It is a sufficient sacrifice. It is complete. And that veil was torn apart and now we can come boldly before the throne of grace in the world of heaven to find help in our time of need.
00:10:40
Speaker
No distinguish, no separation. You don't need a certain title to have to be a certain time of year. You can come to the Lord when you're on the toilet. You can

God's Promise and Solomon's Reign

00:10:50
Speaker
talk to Lord when you're at the clothesline. When you're at the gym, doesn't matter.
00:10:55
Speaker
He's no respecter persons, you know, discriminator of persons or of time. You have access to him at all times.
00:11:05
Speaker
There's also seven-pronged menorah in the temple. And Jesus would later say, I am the light of life.
00:11:18
Speaker
There's also a table of showbread. And Jesus said, I am the bread of life.
00:11:27
Speaker
When we have communion and we break the bread, what are we doing? We're doing this in remembrance of his sacrifice. We tear apart the bread just as he was torn apart.
00:11:40
Speaker
Then there's a sacrificial table,
00:11:45
Speaker
which was a prophetic picture signifying that Jesus was the Lamb of God, slain before the foundation of the earth,
00:11:57
Speaker
to take away the sins of the earth.
00:12:01
Speaker
But he came to die in our place.
00:12:09
Speaker
And between the Ark of the Covenant and so many of the furnishings and designs in the temple, gold, gold, gold. Think of, you know, Spandoval A. Is that what the hand is called? Because you are gold, gold. Always believe in yourself. Yeah, place is full gold.
00:12:28
Speaker
I wanted to go the picture of royalty, the gift fit for a king, the picture of the royal position that Jesus has as the king of heaven.
00:12:41
Speaker
And when he returns at the end of the apocalypse and defeats the forces of evil and reigns for a thousand years, he will reign as the king of Israel and by extension, the king of the world.
00:13:01
Speaker
All right, let's move off pictures and now look at the actual Jesus reappearing again. In 1 Kings chapter 9, verse 1 to 9, it says this.
00:13:16
Speaker
When Solomon had finished building the temple of the Lord and the royal palace and had achieved all he desired to do, the Lord appeared to him second time as he had appeared to MacGybeon.
00:13:28
Speaker
How did he appear to him in Gibeon? In a vision, in a dream, in a vision of the night, in that parable. The Lord said to him in the dream, i have heard the prayer and plea you've made before me.
00:13:44
Speaker
I have consecrated this temple, which you have built, by putting my name there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there. As for you,
00:13:57
Speaker
If you walk before me integrity of hearts and brightness, as David your father did, and do all I command and observe my decrees and laws, I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever.
00:14:12
Speaker
As I promised David your father when I said, you shall never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel. All this is conditional. It all starts with the word if.
00:14:25
Speaker
But if you or your sons turn away, then when it says

Societal Issues and Biblical Disobedience

00:14:30
Speaker
you, he's not talking about Solomon, okay, that's you plural. If you as a nation or your sons, the future kings and your future descendants as a nation, turn away you from me and do not observe the commands and degrees I've given you.
00:14:47
Speaker
And you go off and you worship other gods and worship them, demons, demons. Then I will put off Israel with the land I've given them and will reject the temple I've consecrated for my name.
00:15:02
Speaker
Israel will then become a byword, an object of ridicule among the peoples. And though this people is now imposing, all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff and say, why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this people?
00:15:20
Speaker
People will answer. Because they have forsaken the Lord, their God, who brought their fathers out of Egypt have embraced other gods, demons, worshipping and serving them.
00:15:34
Speaker
That is why the Lord brought all this disaster on them. It's very similar to the lesson we had on judges.
00:15:47
Speaker
So long as they would walk in step with the Lord and in accordance with his word, his commands, his decrees, they would know significant, phenomenal, unmeasured blessings, unparalleled.
00:16:06
Speaker
But invasions from enemy nations would accompany disobedience.
00:16:14
Speaker
Think of people today who are absolutely downright godless. I mean, here in Ireland, for instance, today we have Sinn Féin, you know, mole-faced, mushroom haircut, Mary Lou McDonald's party, and doing everything they can to abolish the three-day waiting period for abortion. Why? Because they literally want this nation to be soaked in the blood of the unborn.
00:16:39
Speaker
That's what godlet's do. Look at the crime rates going through the roof. Violent crime in particular, crimes against women, against most vulnerable people in society.
00:16:53
Speaker
um When people turn away from God, they will make gods of themselves, which will be crooked, or they will worship demons who call themselves gods.
00:17:04
Speaker
And the nation as a whole bears the brunt of that spiritual treason.
00:17:16
Speaker
All right,

Proverbs and Jesus as Creator

00:17:18
Speaker
let's jump on now to Proverbs, chapter three, 19 to 20.
00:17:29
Speaker
In Proverbs,
00:17:34
Speaker
you get glimpses of the person of Jesus hidden in its pages.
00:17:43
Speaker
Proverbs 3, 19 to 20 says, By wisdom, the Lord laid earth's foundations. By understanding, he set the heavens in place. By his knowledge, the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.
00:18:03
Speaker
John 1, verse 3, also shows Jesus as the creator. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word is with God, and the Word was God.
00:18:15
Speaker
Nothing has been made that did not come from him. And in Colossians 1.16, we're told that everything in heaven and on earth, both visible and invisible, was created by Jesus, through Jesus, so and for Jesus.
00:18:40
Speaker
including spiritual realms, rulers, and authorities. He made all of it for his good will, his perfect will, and his pleasure.
00:18:54
Speaker
He created everything that is because he wants to. Obviously, he created a perfect. It has since gone awry ah because of that Pepsi thing called free will.
00:19:09
Speaker
And again, this is um like in our very first episode in the series, when we just look at Genesis 1, verse 1 to 3, where Jesus is the God of Genesis chapter 1.
00:19:25
Speaker
The word is the one who spoke life, who said, light be, and shone his own light. The one who made the earth. The one who made the starry host of the constellations.
00:19:38
Speaker
Who set everything in motion.
00:19:43
Speaker
Okay, Proverbs 8, 22 to 36. a thirty thing The Lord brought me forth at the first of his works.
00:19:54
Speaker
Before his deeds of old. That can also be rendered, the Lord possessed me at the beginning of his work. I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began.
00:20:08
Speaker
So before there was a before, before time.
00:20:14
Speaker
When there were no oceans, I was given birth. When there were no springs, abiding water. Before the mountains were settled in place. Before the hills, I was given birth.
00:20:26
Speaker
Before he made the earth or its fields or any of the dust of the world. I was there when he set the heavens in place. When he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep.
00:20:38
Speaker
When he established the clouds of gold and fixed securely the fountains of the deep. When he gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep his command.
00:20:50
Speaker
And when he marked out the foundations of the earth. Then I was the craftsman at his side.
00:20:58
Speaker
I was filled with delight day after day rejoicing always in his presence. rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind. So we're talking about someone who was there before there was a before, who was a collaborator, who was involved in the creation process, and someone who delighted and human beings being sent to the earth.
00:21:23
Speaker
Now then, my songs

Song of Songs: Jesus's Love for Israel

00:21:24
Speaker
listen to me. Blessed are those keep ways.
00:21:30
Speaker
Listen to my instruction and be wise, don't ignore it. Bless the man who listens to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway. And whoever finds me finds life and receives favour from the Lord.
00:21:45
Speaker
And whoever fails to find me harms himself. All who hate me love death.
00:21:55
Speaker
What's happened here? That is Jesus. That is Jesus revealing himself. One who was there before there was a before, and one who was involved, and his case, very, very definitely and very enthusiastically and powerfully in setting everything that exists in motion.
00:22:29
Speaker
A lot of theologians refer to those verses as Lady Wisdom speaking. and In which wisdom is pictured or personified as female.
00:22:41
Speaker
um But actually it is... Jesus. It's Jesus just using a different identity. And that, it's only a thing that's a bit strange, but you know, male and female came from the Lord.
00:22:54
Speaker
You know, male and female, he created them. It's the same you people calling Jesus lamb or a lion. You know, it's not insulting to call him an animal. It's just a picture And 1 Corinthians 1.24, there on your screen, says, but to those called by God to salvation, but Jews and Gentiles, Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of god So theologians call these the Lady Wisdom verses, but actually in 1 Corinthians 1.24, Jesus is literally called the Wisdom of God.
00:23:34
Speaker
So when it's one of those examples of you're given a little bit here a little bit there. One thing is hinted at, and the New Testament all comes full circle.
00:23:52
Speaker
um And then this verse actually was teaching on this ah church on Sunday, Proverbs 20, 30.
00:24:00
Speaker
Blows and wounds cleanse away evil.
00:24:06
Speaker
And beatings purge the inmost being. Some translations say blue bruises cleanse away evil. and beatings purge the inmost being. That is not God saying to go around beating people up because it's actually a good thing. It's referring one person who got beaten up.
00:24:29
Speaker
Jesus. Jesus, goes blue bruises have purged away sin from the inner man, sin from the spirit of his children.
00:24:46
Speaker
Crown of thorns was put in Jesus' head, forced into his head, into his scalp. And now when you are going through mental anguish, mental torture, you can say, Jesus, you took my pain on yourself and you took the punishment for my pain and for my sin and for my shame.
00:25:08
Speaker
And you said it's finished on the cross. So I appropriate the finished work on the cross. If you said it's done, it's done and I choose to walk in your healing and your freedom.
00:25:22
Speaker
Maybe you just find yourself carrying such a heavy load.
00:25:30
Speaker
Carrying people, carrying responsibilities you never foresaw you never thought it'd be yours to carry. didn't say, Jesus, you carried a cross and went place.
00:25:43
Speaker
Give me your strength.
00:25:47
Speaker
That I can see this through to completion.
00:25:52
Speaker
Maybe you've been beating yourself up.
00:25:58
Speaker
I haven't done enough. I've worked hard enough. There's room for improvement. He's letting myself down. He's letting God down. God hates me.
00:26:07
Speaker
No. Jesus is God. And he endured humiliation, beatings, torture. I mean, the whiplashes alone.
00:26:24
Speaker
Not everyone would survive that process, that torture. her And yet with everything that happened to Jesus after the whiplashes, you know, the whiplashes almost the forgettable part of the story.
00:26:40
Speaker
But he carried all of that for you. And he's carrying you. He's got you. And he's not letting you go. So you hold on to him.
00:26:52
Speaker
you say, Jesus,
00:26:56
Speaker
I've got you and you got me. Let's do this. His blue bruises cleanse away evil. They purge sin right up and out of your spirit mat.
00:27:11
Speaker
When God looks at you, you are a new creation. The old is gone, the new has come. It's no longer you who live, it's Christ who lives within you.
00:27:31
Speaker
And then the next few verses that we're gonna look at just to reveal the person of Jesus.
00:27:42
Speaker
are in the Song of Songs.
00:27:46
Speaker
It's a strange title for a book. but but In fact, of all the Bible titles there are the Song of Songs is bit weird. But that's because Hebrew does not have adjective.
00:28:03
Speaker
An adjective is a word that describes a person. Happy.
00:28:09
Speaker
Place. Ugly.
00:28:16
Speaker
a thing.
00:28:19
Speaker
Cold.
00:28:21
Speaker
In Hebrew, you don't have adjectives.
00:28:25
Speaker
That's why instead of calling Jesus the most majestic king ever was, he's called the king of kings. Just the noun of an end.
00:28:38
Speaker
Instead of calling himself the most powerful lord who has ever been, who's called the Lord of Lords, the noun of a noun, the thing of a thing.
00:28:51
Speaker
Instead of calling himself the most super special, awesome, amazing, supernatural being ever to have existed. Nah. He's the God of God. The spirit being of spirit beings. The Elohim of Elohim.
00:29:07
Speaker
So, there is no the best song, the most fantastic song, a brilliant song in Hebrew, so it's called the Song of Songs, but it means the best song ever. It's an interesting title considering some people like to avoid Song of Songs. It's one of those books where it's between a husband, well, a lover, so yeah, the the husband, and the beloved, the wife.
00:29:39
Speaker
Husband wife. It's one of those books where if you think it means something, yes, that's exactly what it means.
00:29:50
Speaker
You might blush a little bit. It's quite sexually explicit, but still very clean, still very wholesome, because, you know, it is the Bible. There are parts of it where it talks about, like, you know, the husband and wife, you know, getting their freak on in the garden.
00:30:07
Speaker
And there are parts you know where it actually looks a lot like something that Adam and Eve were probably singing to each other. There'll be sections of it. and It was actually Solomon, David's son. Now, he had a ridiculous number of wives and concubines.
00:30:24
Speaker
um But there's one woman that he met in particular and just fell head over heels with. And this is a song between you him and her. And

Layers of Song of Songs

00:30:33
Speaker
then there are a few instances where the friends chime in and they sing as well. It's a song about healthy marriage.
00:30:46
Speaker
You know, similar to today, a where you've got so many cults out there, sex is often seen as something with like ritualistic, I suppose.
00:31:04
Speaker
And even in Bible times, it was even more overt and more obvious than it is today. and With, you know, trying prostitution and the likes, um there would have been a darkly sinister spiritual ritual-esque side to sex and sexual encounters.
00:31:28
Speaker
They've got young men, women, and children who've been badly wounded and by um by sex, and its especially pedophilia, pederasts, rape, etc.
00:31:44
Speaker
But the will of God was always for one husband and one wife to enjoy each other for one life. And it's a picture of a wholesome marriage.
00:31:58
Speaker
It also shows the love that Jesus, the bridegroom, has for the nation of Israel, saved Israel, righteous Israel, his bride. There are also ways you could look at it the love of Jesus for his people, in this case, Christians more generally.
00:32:21
Speaker
So it operates on multiple levels. It's part historical, it's part of people actually existed. You can also look at it as prophetic, where there are parts of it where the Lord is prophesying a future time.
00:32:37
Speaker
So it's a short book, but there's a lot in there and you can read it from many different streams, from many different lenses and actually extract something really precious each time you do it.
00:32:56
Speaker
The beloved, the lover, is Solomon, David's son, the king.
00:33:05
Speaker
The beloved, bride, woman,
00:33:11
Speaker
she had, well, we don't know how many brothers she had, but she had a field, she had her own property that she was neglecting looking after. Why? Because she was too busy looking after her brother's property. It's almost like their skivvy, their slave.
00:33:29
Speaker
Saving after them, looking after their property. And she writes that the sun burned her skin. It darkened her skin.
00:33:41
Speaker
She got damaged from the heat to the sun. Trying to look after her brothers, and to make them happy. Trying to keep them and their criticism off her back.
00:33:54
Speaker
In those days, if a woman were getting married, she would not leave the house for like 12 months beforehand.
00:34:04
Speaker
Specifically to avoid getting sunburned. to stay indoors with a very insular life, a very overly protected life. This woman is nameless, faceless bride.
00:34:16
Speaker
But she is out there, hacking away, and working like a dog. And at one point she refers to herself as a rose of Sharon.
00:34:31
Speaker
As a lily in a valley. And it's one of those verses that especially single Christian women in their twenty s even 30s sometimes, think is a compliment.
00:34:48
Speaker
one of those, like, you know, Psalms where it says, and you know, hashtag fearfully and wonderfully made and they make the duck lips, you know, bebo stunner in front of a mirror in the bathroom their girlfriends.
00:35:00
Speaker
It's one of those cringy things Christian women do. This is another verse that Christian women would tend to go with, you know, hashtag rose of Sharon. You know, hashtag Lily in the Valley.
00:35:14
Speaker
Not a compliment. Not a compliment. It's a crocus. Not a particularly big flower. It's not a particularly unique flower.
00:35:26
Speaker
It's just one um many. One of thousands. What she's actually speaking over herself is I'm not impressive. I'm just... I'm just me.
00:35:39
Speaker
that's Let's call her Jackie. I'm just Jackie. You don't know where the Jackie came from? Let's call her Jackie. Just Jackie. You know? Yeah.
00:35:49
Speaker
I've got father and a mother. got brothers and got sisters. You know, I live in ancient Israel. I'm not special.
00:36:00
Speaker
She has an inferiority complex. She doesn't see herself as in any way standing out. In any way prized. In any way a pearl. any way special. In any way a treasure.
00:36:13
Speaker
She has and very humble
00:36:18
Speaker
Respective on herself. If not even a lowly and dismissive one. And yet, the king comes along.
00:36:30
Speaker
And he looks at this sun-burnt woman who's probably covered in s sweat and whose clothes are probably full of mud and dust. I doubt she was particularly happy with the intensity of her workload.
00:36:44
Speaker
And he looks her and he's like, wow. wow, this one. This one is special. This one's amazing. They fall in love.
00:36:56
Speaker
He says, want to marry you. I want you to be one of my many wives. And she's like, okay. What else was she going say at the beginning?
00:37:09
Speaker
She comes along to the city and, you know, he's got Dozens of his wives there and they're... They've got their lipstick on, they've got their hair done The skin looks perfect. They're covered in their lotions and their potions.
00:37:24
Speaker
They smell better under the arid heat of the day than she's ever smelled in her life. And she says, I'm just a small little crocus in the valley.
00:37:36
Speaker
I'm just... I'm insignificant. I'm not special. I'm undeserving. There's nothing special about me to attract the king. There's nothing special about me that he should actually want anything to do with me. I don't actually have anything of substance to offer him.
00:38:02
Speaker
And yet he says, you are a most precious flower among thorns. All these other women that I'm married to All of the women in the kingdom.
00:38:18
Speaker
They are nothing compared to you. They pale in comparison compared to you. She is his chosen.
00:38:30
Speaker
The one he chose. The one he loved. The one he pursued. The one he wants. The one he desires. The one he is redeeming because he wants to And for no other reason than that.
00:38:48
Speaker
And therein is the picture. One that Jesus has that love for all of us. You might say, sure I'm nothing special. Sure have you seen the height of me?
00:38:59
Speaker
Or the lack thereof?
00:39:02
Speaker
I'm nothing special. Sure have you seen how much I weigh away in a weighing scales? I'm nothing special. Sure I'm on the dole. Or I don't work.
00:39:13
Speaker
Nothing special.
00:39:16
Speaker
My family always said so.
00:39:20
Speaker
There's nothing uniquely
00:39:25
Speaker
desirable about me. I just came from nowhere, arrived nowhere, going nowhere, someday I'll be dead.
00:39:34
Speaker
You might look at yourself and filter it through the lens of your past. Nothing special. Sure. I have four kids and each of them has a different mother.
00:39:50
Speaker
Nothing special. I come from a small town, population zero and decreasing.
00:39:58
Speaker
And yet the Lord looks at you with love, with compassion, with desire.
00:40:11
Speaker
that if you had been the only human ever to have lived, Jesus would still at the right time gone to the cross on your behalf to win you back from the empire of darkness.
00:40:27
Speaker
That's the love he has for Christians. There were no Christians in the Old Testament, but the nation of Israel was the nation that he had set to apart for himself. Why?
00:40:40
Speaker
Well, he specifically says it's not because you had a big army. It's not because you're numerous. It's not because you're powerful. I chose you because you were the smallest nation on earth.
00:40:57
Speaker
I chose you because you were unloved, you were unwanted, you had been rejected by others.
00:41:04
Speaker
And yet, if I move through you and you serve me
00:41:13
Speaker
All the nations on earth will know that there's a God in Israel, the God of the impossible, the God who loves them, the God who makes all things new, the God who can do what no one else can do.
00:41:30
Speaker
And I'll bring my self glory
00:41:34
Speaker
to the love that Solomon had for this woman. It's a picture the love That Jesus had. Won the nation of Israel.
00:41:46
Speaker
And

End Times Prophecy in Song of Songs

00:41:47
Speaker
they're not his primary focus. In this season. But he still loves them. and But also love he has for his church. It's got a bit more specific now.
00:41:59
Speaker
In Song of Songs. Chapter 1 verse 4.
00:42:03
Speaker
It says. The beloved is singing. The woman singing. Take me away with you. Let us hurry. Let the king bring me into his chambers.
00:42:16
Speaker
There have it, the king. On one hand, this is a natural woman who really lived, who had a name, who had an appearance, who had a personality, who had a life, thinking about King Solomon.
00:42:31
Speaker
But Jesus is the king of the world of heaven and the prophesied king of Israel. So it's also Israel
00:42:41
Speaker
declaring that they want an intimate relationship with King Jesus.
00:42:51
Speaker
They did not have those feelings 2000 years ago en masse. Occasionally some people did, some networks people did, some small groups people did, but by and large the whole nation did not repent.
00:43:07
Speaker
And instead they beheaded John the Baptist, Jesus' cousin. They crucified Jesus and they hunted the twelve apostles. So while he's put the pause button on Israel right now with the main focus of his obsession, and now he's looking at the other nations, during the apocalypse,
00:43:30
Speaker
During the end times, during the great tribulation, Israel will become his main focus and his salvation plan again. I know I say this almost every week, but it's okay if that kind of goes bit over your head. If you hear the word end times don't know what it means, that will be our third discipleship series.
00:43:51
Speaker
Song of Songs, chapter two, verses eight to 13.
00:43:59
Speaker
Read as follows. Listen. My lover. Look. Here he comes, leaping across the bar mountains, pounding over the hills. Again, this the woman speaking about the man.
00:44:10
Speaker
My lover is like a gazelle or a young stag. Look. There he stands behind our wall, gazing through the windows, peering through the littleities. You know, kind when you're playing no peekaboo, you know, you're looking, oh, there she is.
00:44:25
Speaker
And everyone's giddy and excited.
00:44:28
Speaker
My lover spoke, this the man speaking now. My lover spoke and said to me, Arise my darling, my beautiful one, and come with me.
00:44:40
Speaker
See, the winter has passed. The rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth. The season of singing has come.
00:44:53
Speaker
The cooing of doves is heard in our land. The fig tree formed with early fruit. The blossoming vines spread their fragrance.
00:45:04
Speaker
Arise, come my darling, my beautiful one. Come with me.
00:45:14
Speaker
As I was reading this earlier, the Lord impressed on me that is prophecy about the end times.
00:45:26
Speaker
Talks with the winter being passed During the apocalypse, a man called the Antichrist will come to power. He will have a consortium of ten kings under him. They will divide up the earth and they will bring it to ruin. They will come as close to bringing hell on earth as possible, annexing earth into the abyss.
00:45:50
Speaker
They will bring the ultimate civilizational winter upon the nations.
00:45:58
Speaker
then there will come a point, the Battle of Megiddo. Perhaps you've heard Armageddon before.
00:46:04
Speaker
at that point, somehow, every Israelite will get saved. The Bible makes that very clear. It's not 99%, it's all of them. Every Israelite reaches the point where they say, okay, Jesus is Lord. And at that point, heaven opens.
00:46:26
Speaker
Jesus comes out in a whirlwind of fire on a white horse um with a double-edged sword in one hand and iron rods in the other.
00:46:37
Speaker
And he leads the heavenly host, heaven's army, against the army of the Antichrist. And Jesus, of course, because he's Jesus, wins.
00:46:51
Speaker
And as... The creators of that civilizational winter perish. Can't you just imagine Jesus saying, see, the winter's passed.
00:47:04
Speaker
The rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth. The season of singing has come. The cooing of doves is heard in our land. The fig tree formed as early fruits. Why a fig tree? that i've just This has just dawned on me now.
00:47:21
Speaker
Because in the Garden of Eden, When the man and the woman, the first married couple, sinned, what did they do They hid behind a fig tree and they took leaves of the fig tree to try to make clothes to cover their nakedness, their shame.
00:47:41
Speaker
So the fig tree forms early fruit. Even that picture of first sin will be in full bloom.
00:47:52
Speaker
The blossoming vines spread their fragrance. Arise, come my darling, my beautiful one, come with me.
00:48:04
Speaker
And this is Jesus talking to the nation of Israel. Arise, come my darling Israel, and my beautiful nation, come with me. and Jerusalem is called the beautiful land, the beautiful city in the Ugo Revelation.
00:48:19
Speaker
And literally, At the book of Revelation end. All that's just coming to me right now. I hadn't planned to say any of this. In Revelation 22. 20 to 21. who testifies to these things. as Jesus says yes. I am coming soon.
00:48:37
Speaker
Amen. Come Lord Jesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus. Be with God's people. Which in Revelation are Jews. Amen. so you've got.
00:48:49
Speaker
Jesus saying, come with me, Israel. Come with me, Israel. Here, and Song of Songs, at the very end of the Bible, you have the nation saying, come on, Jesus.
00:49:00
Speaker
Come Get over here. We need you. We want We want to be with you. We respond to the

Anecdote of Spiritual Conversion

00:49:04
Speaker
call. One of my favorite Christian bands is Jesus Culture.
00:49:13
Speaker
And they have song, actually. Come me. with me Come away with me. he It's never too late.
00:49:27
Speaker
Gonna be great. Not too late for you. And I'll be honest, so my favorite Christian band, it's not my favorite song of theirs.
00:49:37
Speaker
It isn't. But a little anecdote. Back in 2017, there was one night found myself listening to that song, Come Away With Me.
00:49:50
Speaker
And I was listening to it until one a m on a workmate. I didn't know what it was because it's not my favourite other songs.
00:50:02
Speaker
But there was just something about it come away with me. And I listened to it and went to work the next day. and had a student and I was teaching and he was in elementary class or pre-intermediate, quite a low level of English.
00:50:22
Speaker
And there was one student there and he just said, oh teacher, about the break. I was just about to go and get like, you know, my 50 minute break.
00:50:33
Speaker
And of the students said, teacher, I'm not gonna come in tomorrow. And I just said, if I sit down with this guy, i am not gonna get my break today. But it just felt like a god moment, so I sat across from him and I said, okay, what's going on?
00:50:48
Speaker
I said, oh, teacher, her I'm gay and I need to get my vaccinations, you know, so I can live my promiscuous life. He didn't have that language, but that's what it was. um I need to be able to live my life and not get sick and yadda have to to the hospital and get my injections. And I was like, whew, overshare much?
00:51:11
Speaker
a And I just said, you know what?
00:51:16
Speaker
I am going to pray to Jesus that you will be brave tomorrow. Some people would have said, Brendan, you're not a afraid that like you know the appointment would cancelled.
00:51:28
Speaker
I didn't want him to get sick. He was my student. I just said, I'm going pray that Jesus makes you brave, makes you strong on the inside, keeps you safe. And his eyes widened. And he goes, are you a Christian?
00:51:41
Speaker
And I thought, ah, crap on things. Here comes the lawsuit. And I said, I am, yeah, yeah. And he said, wow. He said, my housemate is a Christian.
00:51:52
Speaker
And whenever she plays worship music, I feel really happy on the inside. Now, I didn't know too many Christian songs. Even nowadays, i don't really know what you're the big new Christian songs everybody likes are. i have i like the classics.
00:52:08
Speaker
um And I just said, Okay, what kind of worship songs should she listen to? Maybe I know it. And he just looks at me goes, come away with me, me.
00:52:22
Speaker
come away with me and i said stop I said, i was listening to that song until 1am this morning, and which was like eight hours earlier.
00:52:33
Speaker
and he was like, really? What's so amazing? And I said, yeah. and And from there, I began to talk to him about Jesus. And he absolutely turned his life around. He's Brazilian.
00:52:50
Speaker
ah The Lord sent him to Switzerland and now he pastors to thousands of people every single week, declaring the absolute goodness of God.
00:53:07
Speaker
And I'm sharing that with all of you that I believe this day Jesus is saying, come away with me.
00:53:19
Speaker
Come away with me. It's gonna be great. It's not too late. It's not too late for you.
00:53:32
Speaker
Your age is not a disqualification.
00:53:36
Speaker
That last person you helped who was just downright ungrateful does not disqualify you.
00:53:44
Speaker
That thing you did you feel ashamed of and you can't put into words does not disqualify you.
00:53:52
Speaker
Words spoken over you in your childhood that you're embarrassed to admit you actually believe are true does not disqualify you. Jesus is saying, come away with me.
00:54:06
Speaker
Come into that secret place
00:54:10
Speaker
where you just sit with him, just lie with him. And let him minister to your heart.
00:54:19
Speaker
For those you here last year, there was one day when I put together a playlist of songs and we just had a worship soak. Everyone just lay down for two and a half, three hours and i just let the worship music play.
00:54:31
Speaker
Maybe you need to put together a playlist on YouTube or Spotify and just have a moment with Jesus. An hour, an hour and a half, two hours, whatever time you have. Just come away with him. Maybe it's picking up the Bible on a day that's not a Sunday or Wednesday. Just reading and saying, Holy Spirit, speak.
00:54:52
Speaker
And you read something you don't understand, say Holy Spirit, reveal it to me. Reveal to me by divine revelation, through a person, through a circumstance.
00:55:03
Speaker
Just come away with him.
00:55:07
Speaker
Just as Solomon loved that woman. How much more does Jesus love his kids?
00:55:22
Speaker
Then we get to the next verse.

Prophecies of Jesus's Return in Song of Songs

00:55:26
Speaker
My dove in the clefts of the rock, in the hiding place on the mountainside, Show me your voice. That makes no sense. I just read it. Show me your face.
00:55:43
Speaker
Let me hear your voice. For your voice is sweet. And your face is lovely.
00:55:51
Speaker
Why would the Lord use the image of doves? So you might think, well, Holy Spirit. Yeah, but no. But no.
00:56:05
Speaker
Doves are birds that mate for life.
00:56:14
Speaker
A dove will always keep an eye on its mate for as long as they both shall live.
00:56:24
Speaker
When doves sleep, they will keep one eye open on the lookout for predators coming for the one that they are committed to.
00:56:40
Speaker
You might find that you are in the clefts of the rock. I love mountains, love nature. For me, that's my ideal place to be. That actually is uncomfortable.
00:56:53
Speaker
You might be in a comfortable season. A job you hate.
00:57:00
Speaker
Everywhere you look, you're surrounded by enemies. You just feel there is no peace. There is no reprieve for you.
00:57:12
Speaker
Maybe you're in a place it just feels lifeless. It's just dry, just barren. Nothing's going on. Maybe it looked like things were taking off, everything that was coming up your direction, and all just fell apart or just slipped through your fingers.
00:57:33
Speaker
Maybe you're in a season and you just think, God, is this just my life now?
00:57:41
Speaker
Even when you are in the clefts of the rock, in the hiding place in the mountainside, you are his dove.
00:57:52
Speaker
He has his eyes fixed on you.
00:57:57
Speaker
He is a God who mates for life.
00:58:03
Speaker
And even in your sleeping hours, his eyes are still open, watching over you, protecting you from forces, from predators that would seek to do you harm.
00:58:34
Speaker
We can also find Jesus in the next chapter. In Song of Songs, chapter three, verses six to 11, it says this.
00:58:45
Speaker
Who is this coming up from the desert like a column of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and incense, made from all the spices of the merchants?
00:58:58
Speaker
Look, it's Solomon's carriage. escorted by 60 warriors, the noblest of Israel, all of them wearing the swords, all experienced in battle, each with his sword at his side, prepared for the terrors of the night.
00:59:16
Speaker
King Solomon made for himself the carriage. He made it of the wood from Lebanon. ah Yes, Lebanon exists today. um My brother is in the Irish Transforces. He will probably be going back there in a few weeks.
00:59:31
Speaker
and but Lebanon prophetically, when used in prophecy, refers to the Garden of Eden.
00:59:42
Speaker
Its posts he made of silver, its base of gold. Its seat t was upholstered with purple, a very regal colour, a kingly colour, a royal colour.
00:59:54
Speaker
Its interior lovingly inlaid by the daughters of Jerusalem.
01:00:03
Speaker
Other translations say it's inlaid interior was a gift of love for the adult daughters of Jerusalem. Come out, you daughters of Zion, and look at King Solomon wearing the crown.
01:00:17
Speaker
The crown with which his mother crowned him on the day of his wedding. His mother's Bathsheba. The day his heart rejoiced.
01:00:29
Speaker
You might be sitting there thinking, Jesus wasn't in there. Well, let's read that again. Verse 6.
01:00:40
Speaker
Who is this coming up from the desert? Like a column of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and incense.
01:00:51
Speaker
I'm holding up two fingers for a reason. And if we skip down verse 10, it's post he made of silver, it's base of gold. So we've got myrrh, incense, also called frankincense, yellow, and gold.
01:01:12
Speaker
Here we have a prophecy, not about the King Solomon who was king in those days, but a prophesied king, a better king, a greater Solomon.
01:01:25
Speaker
Solomon, like I said, his name was similar to Shalom, meaning peace. Jesus is the king of peace. The prince of peace. The one who will actually bring world peace.
01:01:39
Speaker
Okay, you'll kill the Antichrist and the evil arm is first. Then he'll bring world peace, one of the survivors.
01:01:46
Speaker
So here we've got a prophecy hidden in all this. A king who would be designated with gold, myrrh, and frankincense.
01:02:00
Speaker
After Mary gave birth to Jesus and then in the manger, and we're told that wise men came to their house in Bethlehem, not to the manger.
01:02:15
Speaker
So presumably they just stuck around. I'm not sure how long they're in the manger, hopefully not for too long. Joseph was a carpenter.

Invitation to Deepen Intimacy with Jesus

01:02:24
Speaker
He probably built them a house.
01:02:27
Speaker
And they lived in it. And then after two years, Knock, knock, knock. The wise men are there. They follow the star.
01:02:39
Speaker
And why it makes them wise, the gifts that they gave Jesus were prophetic. That's what makes them wise. Jesus' contemporaries, the people in Jesus' the country, didn't recognize who they were, by and large, just didn't have a clue.
01:02:59
Speaker
And yet these men came from
01:03:04
Speaker
somewhere in the East.
01:03:10
Speaker
From a foreign religion. Astrologers. They did all the things that Christians today despise with a fiery passion.
01:03:23
Speaker
And yet they bowed before. That two-year-old boy, that uncrowned king,
01:03:31
Speaker
And they gave him gold, a gift fit for a king.
01:03:38
Speaker
They gave him incense or frankincense, which is something that, an aroma that the temple of God would have stank of, and in a good way, it's a perfume, it's beautiful.
01:03:53
Speaker
As a way of saying, you are the high priest of God, you are Melchizedek, the high priest of your own father God, the priest of heaven.
01:04:03
Speaker
But Jesus is the high priest who intercedes for us.
01:04:09
Speaker
And the third gift they gave him was myrrh.
01:04:13
Speaker
Myrrh was something you poured on a corpse to anoint the corpse for burial. They gave him a gift saying, you are the one true king of Israel, not Herod the Edomites, who's got the crown and the throne and the palace who runs a puppet government under the Roman Empire, not him, you're the king.
01:04:40
Speaker
The frankincense, the incense, you're the high priest of heaven.
01:04:46
Speaker
And the myrrh, you are going to die and it will be very, very significant. Something very important is gonna surround your death.
01:05:01
Speaker
That's why they're wise men. Not because they came with gifts or followed a star, because they followed a star and bought gifts, very specific gifts, knowing who he was and signifying that with those gifts.
01:05:23
Speaker
So although Song of Psalms 3 is about the historical King Solomon wearing a crown and he's got his entourage and train, yada yada yada. On one hand you've got a prophecy in there about the Christmas story, the first Christmas.
01:05:38
Speaker
But I would not be one bit surprised if that is also a prophecy about when Jesus comes back after defeating the Antichrist and is establishing his own kingdom in the new temple in Mount Zion, in Jerusalem, in Israel.
01:05:55
Speaker
Because the thing about prophecy is it can operate on multiple levels.
01:06:03
Speaker
And then our last verses for today. Song of Songs. Chapter 4, verses 9 to 12.
01:06:14
Speaker
You have stolen my heart, my sister, my bride. You have stolen my heart. with one glance of your eyes, with one jewel of your necklace.
01:06:27
Speaker
How delightful is your love, my sister, my bride. How much more pleasing is your love than wine and the fragrance of your perfume than any spice.
01:06:40
Speaker
Your lips drop sweetness as the honeycomb, my bride. Milk and honey are under your tongue. Your fragrance The fragrance of your garments is like that of Lebanon.
01:06:54
Speaker
Again, not war-torn Lebanon, which just full of, you know, bombs and landmines like today, the Garden of Eden. You are a garden, hello, locked up, my sister, my bride.
01:07:07
Speaker
You are a spring enclosed, a sealed fountain.
01:07:16
Speaker
The first human relationships. or between a husband and wife, Adam and Eve.
01:07:29
Speaker
When the Lord created the nation of Israel through Abraham,
01:07:35
Speaker
he set Israel to be in a spiritual covenant, a spiritual marriage with himself. And the Bible was very, very long because they said no.
01:07:50
Speaker
Or they said yes and they changed their minds. Or they said yes and they backstabbed him. Or they said yes when it was convenient and then no, more than not.
01:08:03
Speaker
And the Bible ends with that nation totally saved and delivered and rescued by the one true God, Jesus, God with skin on,
01:08:20
Speaker
After he's been their king for a thousand years.
01:08:25
Speaker
When they say, come Jesus, come. And he says, I'm coming.
01:08:32
Speaker
And here we have another prophecy of that. Where yes, you've got the lover enticing his wife to spend that intimate time with him.
01:08:44
Speaker
But prophetically, You've got Jesus of still enticing Israel today be his, to pick him, to choose him, to love him, to put aside their evil ways.
01:09:00
Speaker
And again, you can also look at this from the lens of Jesus talking to his church, that you're a pearl.
01:09:10
Speaker
Absolutely beautiful, stunning and perfect in and of yourself because Holy Spirit has brought your dead spirit to life and dwells within you.
01:09:21
Speaker
And he wants you to have an intimate relationship with him. Yes, a corporate communal relationship is so important.
01:09:30
Speaker
But a personal one as well. There are conversations I have with Jesus that I do not have with literally anybody else.
01:09:41
Speaker
There are things that go through my mind and I have absolutely no qualms in the slightest telling Jesus about them, but no other human has to know.
01:09:56
Speaker
Because what wants is that intimacy. What is intimacy? Into me see.
01:10:05
Speaker
Holding nothing back. Full, total transparency.
01:10:14
Speaker
The veil has been torn down. The curtain's been torn. Jesus is not putting it up again. Religion puts it up again. Demons put up again. The devil puts it up again. People put it up again.
01:10:27
Speaker
But Jesus tore the veil so that there would be no separation between you and him.
01:10:37
Speaker
A veil before the sun goes down tonight. a veil of that unlimited, unhindered access you have to the throne of God, laying yourself at his feet.
01:10:56
Speaker
And okay if you feel bit awkward the start and you can only get a couple of words out your mouth. You have to start somewhere. You do it again the next day and the next and the next day.
01:11:09
Speaker
You build up your prayer language with Lord. You build up your Holy Spirit flow with the Lord. You build up the rhythm to meet the needs today.
01:11:22
Speaker
And he says, you have stolen my heart.
01:11:27
Speaker
He is yours and you are his.
01:11:32
Speaker
How much more pleasing is your love than wine? He is a God who wants to romance his people. A God who wants to be an intimate, deep, tell-all relationship with his kids.
01:11:52
Speaker
Your lips drop sweetness like the honeycomb, milk and honey under your tongue. The fragrance of your garments, because we put on Christ, we clothe ourselves in Christ, is like the Garden of Eden.
01:12:06
Speaker
You're walking around in your Garden of Eden self, how you were always meant to be.
01:12:14
Speaker
In Jesus' name.
01:12:18
Speaker
Amen. Amen. And amen. Amen.
01:12:26
Speaker
All right, guys, very different kind of teaching for Wednesday today. but I hope that you enjoyed it. I hope that you just got such a sense of the deep, intimate, devoted, personal love that Jesus has for each and every one of you. are there Any thoughts, comments or questions on any of that?
01:12:54
Speaker
Or is that all good?
01:13:18
Speaker

and Too many of God's sons are needlessly living in bondage. They don't realize the depth of which Jesus desires them to come away with him.
01:15:37
Speaker
To be a dove. To mate with him forever. To be in a relationship with them that goes beyond this life and forever more where his eyes are always on them even when they're in the plains even when they're mountainsides his eyes are still fixed on them glued on them and watching out for predators protecting them and some just don't have an ocean, and God wants his sons to radiantly shine with the heavenly halos and that glow that just comes from being a right step with the Lord. So don't hesitate in recommending for the men in your life to be there.
01:16:29
Speaker
