Introduction to 'Life After Tech Bootcamp'

00:00:14
Speaker
Hey Abby, how are you today? I'm doing great. How are you, Alyssa? I couldn't be better, especially because this is technically the first episode of the podcast, Life After Tech Bootcamp.

Meet Alyssa and Abby

00:00:26
Speaker
So Abby, I know who you are, but would you like to tell the listeners a little bit about yourself?
00:00:32
Speaker
Absolutely. I worked in hospitality management for about a decade before completing Springboard's data science career track a couple of years ago. Now I'm a machine learning marketing engineer with an MLOps startup. How about you, Alyssa?
00:00:45
Speaker
Absolutely. I did the Springboard UX UI career track before enrolling. I worked as a fashion technical designer in the New York City fashion industry, but now I work as a user experience designer at Verizon. That's quite the change.

Acknowledging Springboard's Role

00:01:01
Speaker
We'll dive more into our personal stories in future episodes, but first we'd also like to give a huge shout out to Springboard for not only getting us to where we are now professionally, but also for sponsoring this podcast.
00:01:13
Speaker
A big thanks, yes, and for those of you who don't know what Springboard is, it's a fully remote, self-paced tech bootcamp that pairs each student with a mentor and a career coach. Yes, and it's not just for people who want to learn UX and data science like Alyssa and myself. There are programs for data analysis, cybersecurity, software engineering, and a whole bunch of other unique offerings.

Podcast's Purpose and Audience

00:01:36
Speaker
So why are we starting a podcast and why is Springboard sponsoring it? Well, that is a great question. So Alyssa and I are both on the Springboard Alumni Committee and we were brainstorming ways to foster connections between alumni and current students. We thought a podcast would be a great way to bring stories straight to listeners on their own time and in the comfort of their own homes or offices or cars or wherever they may be.
00:02:03
Speaker
Exactly, but we didn't want to make any podcasts, so we surveyed the springboard community to discover what they really wanted to hear. Yes, and the response was incredible. The biggest requests were that the community wanted to hear about a different graduate each week, especially their job hunt after finishing the program and how they are settling into their new careers.
00:02:25
Speaker
And these results made sense. I remember a big part of the program for me was learning how to network. I tapped my current networks, relevant connections and cold message. So many people on LinkedIn to learn about the industry and how to get a job after the program.

Interview Insights

00:02:42
Speaker
It was exhausting. Yeah, so we've done some of that work for you and collected a group of Springboard students to share their stories and quite literally hear what students' lives are like once they've completed a bootcamp. This is one of the main reasons I wanted to be a part of this podcast. What helped me succeed in my career transition was listening to people's stories on how they got into the position I wanted to be in. It really helped to shape my journey.
00:03:11
Speaker
Absolutely. So each episode will feature a different graduate from a different Springboard career track. We'll ask them why they chose to enroll, what their job hunt was like, and what they're up to now.

Springboard's Mission of Lifelong Learning

00:03:23
Speaker
And since Springboard's whole mission is creating momentum with education, and education certainly doesn't end with getting your certificate, we'll also talk to folks about what's next for them.
00:03:34
Speaker
I have to say we've been pre-interviewing graduates now and each conversation we've had has personally been so rewarding and inspiring. They all have really amazing insights, tips, tricks to get to where they got. And I think what ties them all together is just their determination to succeed.
00:03:55
Speaker
I agree. And apart from being a resource for the community, hopefully this can also serve as some inspiration for folks who are currently in the weeds at all. This might just be the UXer in me, but they feel like we're saving people some clicks by cutting out the middleman and bringing these stories to others. If I can save anyone the awkwardness of cold emailing a person that I, then I think I've succeeded. And on that note, we're confident that these stories will resonate with you.
00:04:24
Speaker
We're excited that this can be a great passive resource for alumni, current students, and perhaps people just interested in what the outcomes could be like for enrolling in a tech bootcamp. We hope you enjoy life after tech bootcamp.
