Somnium & Weapons Breakdown | Streamin’ Demons

S4 · Streamin' Demons
Avatar
2 Playsin 5 minutes

On this episode of Streamin’ Demons, Jo & Amelie tackle three films that all pretend to be horror... but only one hits the heart. Night of Violence opens strong with a killer fake commercial but fizzles into formula. Somnium, however, is a hauntingly personal thriller that hits Jo and Amelie right in their coming-of-age feels. And Weapons? It’s a genre bait-and-switch: sold as horror, but really a quiet, layered drama. Jo says “don’t waste your popcorn money on it”—but maybe catch it at home. This episode gets deep, personal, and a little fiery.

Watch it, stream it, or skip it—we’ve got thoughts.

Jo
Hey everyone, welcome to Streaming Demons. We've got Joe, myself, hello, and Amelie, say hi
00:00:14
Amelie
Hello. so
00:00:15
Jo
Like us. We are doing a movie one today. we do We started out doing movies a long time ago and we started doing series. Today is a movie one because, thank everyone for all the screeners and appreciate it all.
00:00:32
Jo
It's a horror movie, sort of horror movie. Put a pin on that because we're discussing beforehand and we don't think two of these movies are actually horror movies. Yeah.
00:00:43
Jo
And our movies are Night of Violence, which is a 2025-ish, 25, I believe you, movie with violence and nights.
00:00:56
Jo
Pretty new. And then our next movie is going to be Somnium. yeah um yeah Late 2024, but we just got it. I think just got released today, or we can start talking about it this week. So it's sometimes they film things and they put it out differently.
00:01:11
Jo
And then last but not least, Weapons. In theaters now. Weapons. So I need to say one thing. and One thing only.
00:01:24
Jo
I know we watched Somnium. I watched Night of Violence with someone else, but they're not here, so they can't talk about it. And then I texted you as I was watching Weapons, or right before, because I'm not a dickhead in the theater like that, right before I was watching Weapons, and I think I told you bit might be a good movie for you, but don't see it in the theaters.
00:01:51
Amelie
Yes.
00:01:52
Amelie
So Joseph and I, we have sort of agreement. Whenever we go to the cinema to watch a movie and we think you or would be interested to watch the movie, or for example, if you go to see James Bond and I know you know I want to watch James Bond, you're going to tell me if the movie is theater or not.
00:01:52
Jo
Yeah, like, uh...
00:01:58
Jo
Right. Or...
00:02:15
Jo
right or Or not. and and Or not usually means streaming.
00:02:19
Amelie
Or not.
00:02:21
Jo
And if the movie is bad, we'll just say like, this movie is dog shit. Don't see it at all. But that's exactly it. What was the one I told you had to watch in the theater? What was it? You remember?
00:02:29
Amelie
Superman.
00:02:30
Jo
Right. Superman. Like that one you have to watch in the theater. And was I true? You have to watch it in the theater?
00:02:34
Amelie
Yes.
00:02:35
Jo
yeah
00:02:36
Amelie
Yes, it was great.
00:02:38
Jo
Absolutely. And like something like Superman, the new Superman with James Gunn, that one, you really get the full experience if you're at the theater because it's this big epic scene. It's these battles.
00:02:49
Jo
It's the sound. it's It's all the color. It's it's all the niceties, right? And James Bond is another one. I agree. I think all James Bond films are basically made for the big screen.
00:03:01
Jo
You can watch them on your TV set, but they're really fucking made for the big screen, right?
00:03:01
Amelie
Yes.
00:03:05
Amelie
And they're amazing. Like, for example, a James Bond, it's a real event.
00:03:07
Jo
Yeah.
00:03:11
Amelie
What's going on?
00:03:12
Jo
It's an event.
00:03:12
Amelie
New James Bond. Who's going to be the next James Bond? Every generation has a James Bond.
00:03:15
Jo
Right.
00:03:17
Amelie
I know every James Bond, every actor who plays James Bond, their nationality, who they are, what they were selected, etc. It's always top-notch actor. And we all have a favorite James Bond, right?
00:03:29
Amelie
And when a movie is made,
00:03:30
Jo
so No, no, no. Wrong. Wrong. Everyone in the world has one favorite James Bond.
00:03:34
Amelie
pa
00:03:37
Jo
Every other James Bond is number two. You can have your second favorite James Bond be different, but everyone loves, we all know, Sean Connery, the end.
00:03:40
Amelie
Yes, true.
00:03:45
Jo
And then everyone else.
00:03:49
Amelie
Ah, yes, there is always the original, original.
00:03:53
Jo
Sorry, that was my that was my board.
00:03:53
Amelie
What's that?
00:03:55
Amelie
What are you doing back in Canada?
00:03:55
Jo
i hit the board.
00:03:59
Jo
I'm so sorry. You're saying that Sean Connery was number one. Go on.
00:04:03
Amelie
Anyway. We all have a favorite. That's that interesting. James Bond is Sean Connery. So James Bond is kind number zero, you know?
00:04:10
Jo
Yep.
00:04:13
Amelie
Zero is zero.
00:04:13
Jo
Yeah.
00:04:14
Amelie
And then you have the different generation and different generations.
00:04:16
Jo
The different generations. but
00:04:17
Amelie
Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, etc., etc., etc., right?
00:04:22
Jo
Pierce Bronson.
00:04:22
Amelie
But you are right with the movie.
00:04:25
Jo
Daniel Craig.
00:04:26
Amelie
It's always the top-notch, top-notch car, top-notch style, sense of humor, camera, feel, music, even the soundtrack.
00:04:34
Jo
Right.
00:04:37
Jo
Yeah, the music videos, though the soundtracks were amazing.
00:04:40
Amelie
The soundtrack is...
00:04:42
Jo
And those are, you must see these in the movie theaters.
00:04:42
Amelie
Oh, yeah.
00:04:45
Jo
And then there's stuff out text you're like, you just wait for the home release. It could be a good movie, but you didn't need to pay 20 bucks to see it. You know what mean?
00:04:56
Amelie
Yes.
00:04:56
Jo
Like the theater doesn't add anything to it. And there's tons of movies like that, that I will, well, I'll name one of them on. I'll give you hint. It's one of the three we're talking about today.
00:05:07
Amelie
Yeah.
00:05:08
Jo
Yeah, it's one of those like, yeah.
00:05:08
Amelie
like It's interesting what you say because in France, we famous, famous film, movies who did very bad in cinema, but did very well on TV.
00:05:15
Jo
Yeah.
00:05:19
Amelie
Because in France, every night at 8 p.m., we have the movie cinema. So you would see a movie. And there's so many movies in cinema who did very bad in theater,
00:05:29
Jo
Yeah.
00:05:29
Amelie
But once they were released on TV, over and over again, they became classic. So on TV, you would watch the movie, it's really cool, but going to the cinema to watch that movie?
00:05:41
Amelie
No. You know, it's a kind of, you see what I mean?
00:05:43
Jo
Well, that's one of the things. i I liked the movie Labyrinth with David Bowie, but that bombed the box office. I didn't know it bombed because i was like six when it came out.
00:05:56
Jo
So I really wasn't watching box office numbers at that much. But it's one of those movies you play again and again and again and again. becomes something else later on. And I will say this.
00:06:07
Jo
The first movie we're talking about, or I'm going to talk about, is the one you didn't watch. Night of Violence. I'm just going to read the IMDb angle of it. Employees celebrate winning a lawsuit against a town, only to find themselves besieged in office by eventual locals determined to make them pay for ruining their lives.
00:06:25
Jo
I didn't read the synopsis when I asked for the screener. i got the screener based upon the original. It looks like the IMDb has a different... poster for it the original poster i was like oh this looks cool as hell people wear masks and it said like now all angels come from heaven or something like that there was tagline right and I just hit my arm and it looked really cool i'm like my god this looks amazing and i was watching with someone and it starts off with a kind of a fake infomercial for
00:06:59
Jo
pills or some sort of like new medical thing and it was really well done like my god this like this is amazing way to start like holy crap i can't believe it i just previously watched like two or three but bad screeners in a row so i was like in for a win you know and that's when it stops like i don't know what they did the entire budget for this fucking commercial that they do for the The drugs, the the fake drugs that the company is selling, you know, I'm not sure if that's the entire budget or that was all the plan they had out for the thing.
00:07:37
Jo
The rest is formula formulaic as hell. You know exactly what's going to happen. Again, I did not read the synopsis before I watched the movie. I knew what was going to happen as soon as that commercial was ending, like maybe five minutes after.
00:07:51
Jo
and The actors are all decent. The acting is decent. The writing is... pretty weak, to be honest. They try some, they don't know what they want to be. They try some sophomore gags. Like, they try to do a masturbation gag it doesn't really go nowhere.
00:08:07
Jo
They try to do a drug gag it doesn't go nowhere. Like, they the the characters, when people die, it's like, okay. You don't care about the characters because they're just, all the characters are caricatures.
00:08:20
Jo
Like, there's no flesh and bones involved. Like, even the townspeople, oh, yeah, there's the definitely townspeople trying to kill them. Cool, whatever. Didn't care. Could not care. And that is the unfortunate. So maybe Night of Violence is your jam.
00:08:38
Jo
And maybe you disagree with me, which is fine. i think the acting was fine. Nothing to write home about. It was fine.
00:08:51
Jo
Some were playing absolute caricatures. And I'm not sure if that's directing going wrong or if the acting going wrong. Bit of both, I'm not sure. The writing is just... Might well have been chat-GDP.
00:09:03
Jo
Could have gave me this fucking story, to be honest. I know I'm probably pissing someone off right now. Oh, well. Sucks to be you. So, yeah, I would say if you like Night of Violence, cool.
00:09:12
Amelie
Thank
00:09:16
Jo
Leave a review or tell me what you thought. Because it's the one you didn't see. And I know the person I saw it with, we both were like, well, it wasn't a complete piece of shit. You know, it was like, it had a moment.
00:09:29
Jo
The rest was just, know. I wouldn't watch this in the theater. shit I wouldn't even watch this at home if if I knew what it was.
00:09:41
Jo
Did you watch the the trailer to that? Because i kind of surprised you with Night of Violence. i didn't really say we're going talk about at all. so
00:09:46
Amelie
No, no, I didn't take the time to watch the trailer.
00:09:49
Jo
Yeah.
00:09:50
Amelie
I didn't hear about it.
00:09:52
Jo
Yeah. That's how bad it was. But this way it was so bad, i didn't even tell you about it.
00:09:57
Amelie
Yes. Yes.
00:09:58
Jo
I was like, I didn't even try to get you the link to it.
00:09:59
Amelie
e it you didnt
00:10:02
Jo
I'm like, oh, fuck it. Emily's going to hate this one too.
00:10:05
Amelie
Because normally you should you send me a message saying, hey, for the podcast, can you watch that movie?
00:10:09
Jo
Yeah.
00:10:10
Amelie
Or I would advise you to watch that movie. or I'm thinking about talking about that movie. I knew... We were going to talk about the movie, but
00:10:19
Jo
that Yeah, it was kind of like, oh, it was basically me saying I'm contractually obligated to talk about this film because, and thank you for the screener. I know this is probably not the, the PR company's like, fuck it, just shut up right now.
00:10:34
Jo
But honestly, I do thank you for the screeners, ever never everyone. and And there are merits to the movie. They actually absolutely have a beautiful opening. And then, fuck, man, something happens.
00:10:49
Jo
And it ain't good. It ain't good. And I'm not talking about the fucking killing in the movies. It just... Meh. Whatever.
00:10:57
Amelie
eight
00:10:57
Jo
We've seen it before.
00:10:58
Amelie
It's very important to remember to people who are watching us. It's not because I want to watch a movie and Joe watch the movie before me and say, hey, don't go to theater. It's really shit or it's more DVD thing or torrented or everything.
00:11:13
Amelie
I will still go to the cinema if I want to go to the cinema to watch it. Right.
00:11:18
Jo
I do what I want.
00:11:20
Amelie
Yeah, of course. And I will maybe debate and disagree with him. But most of the time, movie, I never heard about it, or series he watched first before me, he kind of knows what I like and don't like.
00:11:23
Jo
Yeah.
00:11:34
Amelie
For example, there is movies he doesn't like, but you know I'm going to like it because there is a character who is in a certain way, or the story goes in a certain way, and that's my kind of jam.
00:11:45
Amelie
And vice versa.
00:11:46
Jo
That way it's French, by the way.
00:11:50
Amelie
Always.
00:11:52
Jo
have Right, exactly. And same thing as like, you recommend some stuff to me. Go yeah check it out. Pretty cool. I really liked the video you sent me of the drag the Luke Benson Dracula mashup.
00:12:04
Jo
It reminded me of Walk Like an Egyptian though.
00:12:04
Amelie
Yeah.
00:12:05
Jo
like, are they doing fucking Walk Like an Egyptian right now? Like, is this the Bengals?
00:12:11
Amelie
I really like that because you've got all the new generation of Gen Z who are cinephile, who really like new movie.
00:12:15
Jo
Yeah.
00:12:18
Amelie
So now movie I know since my childhood from the 90s are old fashioned or they're vintage for them.
00:12:23
Jo
Right.
00:12:25
Amelie
So that's really interesting to see the mashup if they can do and edit on Instagram and TikTok with different kind of music. So I sent you a video with Dracula from Le Gubesson, and it's just a small cut from the movie with the same song from Billie Eilish Diner.
00:12:35
Jo
yeah yeah but
00:12:44
Amelie
And it's about a stalker who enters somebody's home and is really in love. So that's really interesting. The p song, the edit, top notch.
00:12:50
Jo
right It goes well to, and that's, that's the best thing about being able to see small things on that. You said you found that on Instagram. Was it?
00:13:01
Jo
Yeah. Because people can make their own cuts and I really liked the creativity of it.
00:13:02
Amelie
Correct, yes. Yeah.
00:13:06
Jo
And they're making, it's synthesis. You're taking something from one thing, taking something from one thing and you're making your own spin on it as a brand new thing in the world. I love art like that. I do. And maybe, you know what, maybe it's just one of those night of violence days that I didn't like.
00:13:22
Jo
But you know, the next movie we're talking about is one you watch. And I got it because I saw Grace B. Van Dien's name in I'm like, oh my God.
00:13:34
Jo
And then i'm started watching it. I'm like, that's not her. So the entire reason I got this movie was because I saw the actress's name and she's in it for like a half minute.
00:13:47
Jo
Like maybe a half minute.
00:13:49
Jo
Yeah, yeah. It's actually someone else. And she gets top billing. And even in IMDB, it gives her top billing.
00:13:54
Amelie
Mm-hmm.
00:13:56
Jo
But she's almost not in it whatsoever. And I'm talking about Somnium. So 2024, but it we can finally talk about now. It's been embargoed until today. So we can talk about it.
00:14:06
Amelie
Mm-hmm.
00:14:08
Jo
And it's written, directed by Rachel Crane. I didn't know actually written and directed by Rachel. That's nice. That's very cool. And i saw it.
00:14:20
Jo
I thought you would like it. and we you know and And thanks for it again for the screeners. I can give them to you And I'll read the IMDb before we talk about it. An experimental sleep clinic. Somnium. Dreams are made real.
00:14:35
Jo
Side effects may include hallucinations, confusion, paranormal. Paranoia. Sleep paralysis. Detachment from reality. Lost sense of self. Permanent nightmares.
00:14:45
Jo
I had sleep paralysis. Did I tell you?
00:14:50
Amelie
Yes, you did.
00:14:51
Jo
Did I? That fucking sucked.
00:14:52
Amelie
Yes, yes, yes.
00:14:53
Jo
Zero out of ten stars.
00:14:53
Amelie
My God.
00:14:56
Jo
And it was ah ah it was a nightmare escape dream loop. So every time I thought I was waking up, it actually part of the sleep paralysis.
00:15:03
Amelie
o
00:15:03
Jo
It was completely not fun. I, yeah, I still remember it. You know, you try to open your eyes and it's taking forever open your eyes.
00:15:11
Amelie
i know, no, no. That's terrible because you know you're sleeping and you try to scream sometimes and you scream.
00:15:13
Jo
And it was,
00:15:19
Amelie
scream in your dream and then you open your mouth and you just just whisper and you start to wake up have you ever experienced you're lying on the bed and you can't move your eyes open and you can't move that's
00:15:33
Jo
Yeah, the sleep process.
00:15:36
Amelie
terrible it happened to me once to open my eyes and not being able to move and it happened to me three times in my whole life I always slept
00:15:39
Jo
Oh, yeah.
00:15:49
Amelie
as a child and teenager in the same room like my brother. So we had a room separated, but always together.
00:15:54
Jo
Yeah.
00:15:55
Amelie
And I remember i used to yell at my lungs, help, help, Jerry, help, wake me up, wake me up, help, you know. And you don't speak, you just paralyzed.
00:16:04
Jo
Yeah.
00:16:09
Amelie
And I would just wake up and whisper, Jerry, help.
00:16:13
Amelie
And wake up, and then wake up slowly.
00:16:13
Jo
Yeah.
00:16:14
Amelie
But for a moment, you remember, you think about it, like,
00:16:17
Jo
you It's scary as hell.
00:16:18
Amelie
Yeah. Yeah.
00:16:20
Jo
Yeah, exactly. Yeah, it's not like having a nightmare where you forget about it because it's happening to you while you're awake. And it's just like want in your mind is just trying to like, oh, no, we're still dreaming. Bring him back in, bring him back in, and bring him back in.
00:16:32
Jo
And that's, I think you hit it directly. Like you're trying to scream and it comes out. Like I was using enough force to punch a hole through the universe just to barely open my eyes.
00:16:38
Amelie
so
00:16:43
Amelie
And you're aware of it. You're aware of it. You're there like that.
00:16:46
Jo
The struggle.
00:16:46
Amelie
And you try to open your eyes. and i Come on.
00:16:48
Jo
Yeah.
00:16:49
Amelie
It's a dream. Come on. That's crazy. We can be like that. That's crazy.
00:16:54
Jo
Yeah. And that goes directly with Somnium. Now, i I'm reading the IMDB. It says drama, sci-fi, and thriller. I think it got shopped to me as horror, which we both kind of said, like, it's not really horror.
00:17:11
Jo
It's got horrible things happening in it, but it's not really horror. Sci-fi? yeah Like, maybe? <unk> It's more of a thriller, I think, right?
00:17:21
Amelie
Black, Black Mirror. I would say that would be an amazing episode for of Black Mirror.
00:17:24
Jo
Yeah.
00:17:27
Jo
Oh, Somnium is an hour and 32 minutes, and it is well-written, well-directed, well-acted. I could see this being, yeah, I think if they just cut this down to like 30, it have been a Black Mirror episode.
00:17:43
Jo
But there's nothing you would cut. It's really well done.
00:17:48
Amelie
Yeah.
00:17:48
Jo
And Chloe Levine, or Levine, sorry if I'm saying your name wrong, who plays Gemma in this, she's the main character. She's the protagonist, and we see almost everything for her eyes.
00:18:02
Jo
And it made me just kind of think, man, this really does happen. Not so much the sci-fi part of it,
00:18:14
Jo
But it's the she plays this person like fresh off the bus, trying to make it in Hollywood. you know So there's this little bit of naive type thing happening. And she gets a small, it's not even is that really a studio apartment, but it's a small apartment.
00:18:31
Jo
there's There's different rooms, so it's not quite a studio. And she's just trying to struggle. And the only place she can really find is this somnium, like this sleep clinic that she can be a caretaker for at night for job.
00:18:47
Jo
And it's, the writing is so layered. Like I was talking about Night of Violence before. The writing might as well been a fucking chimp monk on meth doing a chat GTP.
00:18:59
Jo
It was just like, whatever. like you you Like, no shit, this is going happen. But with Somnium, the writing is so layered. It's a beautiful piece of work. And it shows in the movie too. Like the director and writer the writer are same person. So sometimes that can help.
00:19:15
Jo
So when you were watching this, what did you expect and what did you get? I'm curious.
00:19:21
Amelie
I was expecting something like the traditional scary movie, you know, with different kind of character, nurses, like, oh, there's a monster.
00:19:25
Jo
Right.
00:19:28
Amelie
Or, for example, having a really dark eight episode, like very short story, you know, from her backstory.
00:19:29
Jo
Right.
00:19:37
Jo
Yeah.
00:19:38
Amelie
And then complete episode of the light. Somebody wakes up and there is a monster or something, something or somebody die and you see ghosts, like something.
00:19:47
Jo
Right.
00:19:48
Amelie
And actually what we got was fantastic story. Like I was expecting something scary.
00:19:53
Jo
Yeah.
00:19:56
Amelie
It was not scary. But remember what I said to you before the podcast. I like the movie. Like I really enjoy the movie.
00:20:04
Jo
Absolutely. Yeah.
00:20:05
Amelie
Because that character touched me.
00:20:06
Jo
film
00:20:08
Amelie
Like it reminded me of my life as a 23 years girl.
00:20:12
Jo
That's exactly it.
00:20:12
Amelie
go
00:20:15
Jo
It reminded me when I was a 23-year-old girl. No. Wait, what? No, but you know what i mean? Exactly. Because the character, remember ah the other ones, like, I didn't care who died or who lived because the characters were just caricatures.
00:20:20
Amelie
Yeah.
00:20:26
Jo
No one cares. You care about Gemma because we either knew a Gemma or you were a Gemma.
00:20:33
Amelie
I was a Gemma.
00:20:35
Jo
And you were the Gemma.
00:20:36
Amelie
I was a Gemma because you know she had life in her hometown.
00:20:37
Jo
Yeah. Yeah.
00:20:42
Amelie
She come from a village eight just like me.
00:20:42
Jo
Yeah.
00:20:43
Amelie
She worked in a diner.
00:20:44
Jo
Small town.
00:20:45
Amelie
worked in McDonald's.
00:20:47
Jo
Yep.
00:20:47
Amelie
So she must have worked for two years, the time to save money. She had a life with her boyfriend. Boyfriend doesn't want to go to LA. Boyfriend wants to be a sound assistant and live in his hometown. They have a fight.
00:20:57
Jo
Yeah.
00:20:57
Amelie
They broke up. They are on a parting lot. Everything is going to shit show. I remind myself, remember myself in the car park with people and be like, I thought you were my friends or having a boyfriend who just broke up with me or blah, blah, blah.
00:21:06
Jo
Yeah.
00:21:14
Amelie
So that's a moment when you're like, getting out of university and you've got this sort of black hole between 18 and 23 years old. You have your friends for life, but you realize they're not to your friends for life because they live somewhere else else.
00:21:27
Jo
Yeah.
00:21:28
Amelie
They want different things.
00:21:29
Jo
Yeah.
00:21:30
Amelie
you You want to live abroad. They don't want to live abroad. They want to stay here or they're very jealous and stuff and you realize, oh, I'm not going to get married with you and I need to be my own person and I'm not a teenager anymore.
00:21:44
Jo
yeah
00:21:45
Amelie
But Where is my boyfriend who loved me as a diner and and looked at me the way he used to look at me?
00:21:53
Jo
Yeah.
00:21:53
Amelie
What changed? Oh, we grew up. So she decided to go to l L.A. You understand she, the letter, the envelope with the money for one way back to home if you don't find a job.
00:22:00
Jo
She's a
00:22:04
Jo
Right.
00:22:05
Amelie
I had the same fucking letter.
00:22:06
Jo
Right. Really?
00:22:09
Amelie
Yes, I had the same fucking letter.
00:22:10
Jo
Jesus.
00:22:13
Amelie
When I saw... a little flat. It reminds me of the hotel when I used to live.
00:22:13
Jo
yeah
00:22:17
Jo
Yeah.
00:22:20
Amelie
I used to live behind the reception. It was my first flat. I didn't have to pay rent, but I was working as a night auditor or concierge.
00:22:28
Jo
Right.
00:22:28
Amelie
So if you had a problem at night, you would call me. And there's a lot of scary things happening. and so So when she was working at night with the CCTV and she was playing with her phone or writing and stuff or just reading something...
00:22:41
Jo
The lines, yeah.
00:22:42
Amelie
Yeah, remind me that. So I'm like, yeah, you can't find a good job. The only job you can have is during the night because during the day when you want to be a receptionist, either they want somebody who's sociosal or with a kid because, you know, you need to to have some light or maturity.
00:22:57
Jo
The ability. Yeah.
00:22:59
Amelie
And the only job you find is, you know, concierge in a hotel or working at night, doing this and that.
00:23:02
Jo
The ones. Yep.
00:23:06
Amelie
Like, I'm not the only one, I know. But the envelope, And saying, yeah okay, if it doesn't work, I have the envelope. And you're all alone and all by yourself. And you meet new people who believe in you, but you don't believe in yourself. Like the guy.
00:23:21
Amelie
I didn't find the guy creepy. The guy with the white hair or finder on the streets.
00:23:24
Jo
Yeah, I they didn't know how to take take them at first because like i grew up in the West Coast. So, like you know, you're like, is this the dude who's just kind of going to be like, yeah, I'm a director. Come on by.
00:23:40
Jo
One of those assholes. But he's not. You find out he's just actually being one of the true honest people who actually do want to help her out in the entire fucking thing.
00:23:51
Amelie
And I met that kind of guy. met that kind of guy. And that guy is Paul, my American friend. He was ex-university teacher who lived in North of France.
00:24:00
Jo
Yeah.
00:24:01
Amelie
My age was French. And he was an American who was working in Netherlands. So my hometown was not far away from Netherlands. So he would work in Netherlands and come back, live in his house.
00:24:13
Amelie
And you meet these kind of people who like, hey, I have everything, I'm good and stuff, let me give you help. Let me introduce you to people and stuff like that.
00:24:22
Jo
yeah
00:24:23
Amelie
And they're not bad. They just have wisdom. They've been in this kind of situation and they like to help 20-something years old people.
00:24:30
Jo
Yeah, I think we became jaded, that's what.
00:24:34
Amelie
Yeah, yeah.
00:24:35
Jo
don't know.
00:24:35
Amelie
But you need people like that to say to you, hey, you're going to have everything you ever wanted.
00:24:38
Jo
Yeah, you do.
00:24:41
Amelie
And you're going to get bored of it. But it's okay. Because you will find things. Hey, there is this scene in the kitchen. I will i really like it. Because she kissed him.
00:24:52
Amelie
They're like, okay, they're going to have sex. And he's like, no, that's not that. But I don't understand. What do you want? I believe in you. I know you can do it. But what's the solution? Please help me.
00:25:03
Amelie
I can help you. But you need to help yourself first. You need to believe in yourself.
00:25:06
Jo
Yeah.
00:25:07
Amelie
And that's a fantastic... fantastic scene because he's not going to give her everything and he said, if I wanted to, I would just grab it.
00:25:13
Jo
One of many.
00:25:20
Amelie
And she she's depressed and everything. And then she turned her world around thanks to the dream she has by the psycho friend.
00:25:27
Jo
Right.
00:25:28
Amelie
right
00:25:29
Amelie
And she ah, shit. She just, basically, she just,
00:25:35
Jo
She turns her life around. She does. She tries to turn her life around at that point.
00:25:37
Amelie
yes, she does.
00:25:39
Jo
That is a very crucial point.
00:25:39
Amelie
Yeah.
00:25:41
Jo
And that was the difference between the scene we talked about in Barry before, where it's kind of like, oh, you don't have to sleep with me to get this acting job.
00:25:45
Amelie
Yeah.
00:25:51
Jo
I'll be your manager no matter what, or your agent no matter what. And it's kind of like no, you have to sleep with him. That was his direct thing. he's like, oh, you know. Where in Somnium, he's really saying like, what the hell you doing trying to kiss me?
00:26:05
Jo
he's almost He's like offended by it. like, life that's what you want. And I love what you did for the line because that is what he was trying to get across. If I wanted it, I would just take it.
00:26:17
Amelie
Yeah.
00:26:18
Jo
Like if I wanted to kiss, I could have done that like two months ago when we first met.
00:26:18
Amelie
Yeah.
00:26:22
Amelie
Mm-hmm.
00:26:23
Jo
You know, i don't want it.
00:26:25
Amelie
And that's beautiful because, yeah.
00:26:26
Jo
And that's what he was trying to show her, right? If you want something, you you have to do it.
00:26:28
Amelie
And I met these kind of people like that who are older and they're like, hey, kid, well, everything is going to be okay. You're going to find a job. You're going to meet people. And you're going to travel the world and do everything you ever wanted.
00:26:41
Amelie
How are you sure? Do you have a crystal ball? Look at my car. It's broke down. My dad hates me and my mom walked me out of the house and I can't find a job. It's going to be okay. You're going to start with a simple job.
00:26:54
Amelie
You're going to save money. You're going to get the courage and you're going to fuck off.
00:26:58
Jo
Yeah.
00:26:59
Amelie
Don't worry. It's going to be fine. And why do they know that? Because they live the same situation. They're just 50 years old and and that's all. They see you in range and stuff and they do. And that's why I like that movie because It really touched on sensitive cold, you know, the envelope.
00:27:15
Amelie
She walked in a diner in her family. She really had dreams. She was like, I want to be an actress. I want to be an actress. She has a boyfriend because, you know, you're 19 years old. You've got a heart. You love the guy forever. He loves you. He wants to build a house and everything.
00:27:31
Amelie
and that yeah da
00:27:31
Jo
yeah
00:27:33
Amelie
And she wants him to become a sort of musician or rock star.
00:27:38
Jo
Because he, and they her boyfriend, when they first meet, wants that rock star dream.
00:27:38
Amelie
She
00:27:43
Jo
He was good as magician magician musician. And she was trying to be supportive. And he's like, no, I just want to be a guitar tech.
00:27:51
Amelie
Yeah.
00:27:55
Jo
Mope around.
00:27:55
Amelie
Yeah.
00:27:56
Jo
Yeah.
00:27:56
Amelie
And he's like to say he's like to telling her, hey, grow up. Like, I want to work with my dad. I want to build a house and everything, which is a fantastic dream. Like, I'm all for it, but she wants more.
00:28:06
Jo
Right.
00:28:09
Amelie
So she has to, she breaks up with him and she still has a ah ah fit in the past. She's like, What about my friends? What about my family? i don't have money. I'm fucked.
00:28:20
Amelie
Did make a good choice? And I find myself there.
00:28:26
Jo
right
00:28:26
Amelie
Like I live in Prague. How many times I'm like, what the fuck am I doing here? Like I'm learning accounting in German and I don't have a lot of money and I'm far away from everyone and da-da-dee-da-da-da and you realize your friends are not calling you or messaging you and stuff and and it's really weird but then you realize you made new friends who are I wouldn't say better but they just like you they leave the same things they push you to do more and stuff and that's great like
00:28:45
Jo
Yeah.
00:28:49
Jo
I'm
00:28:57
Jo
and different.
00:29:04
Jo
Yeah, and that's what this movie, Somnium, really nails, is Gemma's experience going from a small town at that age of her life. And going to a bigger town. For me that was going to Vegas.
00:29:18
Jo
Like I came from a small town. in my teens. And I went west young man. And ending up in Vegas. Where it's a whole new fucking dynamic. And you have to learn on your feet. And the jobs that are available. The ones you don't want. Because all the jobs you want.
00:29:35
Jo
are not available. I've had friends who are like, yeah, I'm on the waiting list to become a bartender. Like there's a fucking waiting list. Like what the fuck you talking about? and Where I'm from, you were either getting the job or you weren't getting the job.
00:29:47
Jo
But in Vegas, there's a waiting list. What the shit?
00:29:52
Amelie
And people don't take you seriously.
00:29:52
Jo
You know?
00:29:54
Amelie
People don't take you seriously.
00:29:55
Jo
Not at that age. Everyone is meat in Vegas. i Everyone's meat. So yeah, it kind of like this is Hollywood vibe here. Now talking about some wins and how different this movie is and we're, how we're talking about how well written and how well directed and how well acted. I'm the miss Florida film festival, grand jury award nominee. So that's being nominated right now. Uh,
00:30:21
Jo
Beloit International Film Festival, winner of the 2025 Best Narrative Feature Film. And then I'll just give you a couple of some of the other nominees. Nominee for Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress, Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, Cinematography and Visual Effects, Makeup Effects. These are all fantastic.
00:30:43
Jo
Winner, 2000, no, wrong one. so like like So, ooh, are you kidding me? This is 2015. It might be a typo. First place suspense thriller competition for screenplay. So this screenplay might have been out since 2015.
00:30:59
Jo
That's interesting.
00:31:02
Jo
That's pretty cool. And then Female Eye Film film Festival, 2024 winner for feature film and best American feature film.
00:31:13
Jo
So... Brooklyn Horror Festival, audience award winner. And we can go on and on and on. But if this film came out in 2015, excuse me, if this script came out in 2015, that's pretty decent because it doesn't feel pre-COVID.
00:31:36
Jo
This is pretty eternal. like the The beats here are not anything that would mark it by 2015 standards.
00:31:46
Amelie
it's It cannot be stamped. It can could be during the during the 2000s, later, in 2030.
00:31:50
Jo
Yeah.
00:31:53
Jo
Yeah.
00:31:53
Amelie
We all go through that. I like the side character, the bad guy, because it's really interesting.
00:31:57
Jo
It's coming.
00:32:04
Amelie
It's well presented. And I like how he plays.
00:32:07
Jo
Yeah.
00:32:09
Amelie
And also, there is a scene where she auditioned to play a part, And she fake cry and she's very present. This is an excellent actress.
00:32:18
Jo
Yeah.
00:32:20
Amelie
Like I was really impressed.
00:32:21
Jo
Oh, Chloe Levine is amazing actress. I'm saying, I went to see it. I saw ah ah Grace Van Dien was in it. I'm like, I'm going to see it. as I was ah was thinking, like going no i I saw her father in Mad Heidi. I'm like, I'm going go talk about this later on.
00:32:38
Jo
And was like, oh man, I don't think Grace is really in the film. he gaveru credula You catch Grace for like a half minute. But... I wasn't disappointed because Chloe was such an amazing actress and the story was such well told.
00:32:54
Jo
There is that scene where she's auditioning. And then you remember we talked about, again, bringing us back to like Barry, where everyone was this blonde mold type thing. And that's what we see here. It was like the whole the Hollywood blonde type thing. Yeah.
00:33:08
Jo
And the goal, I, of course I will get this job. And I won't cause everyone looks so much like this and I look like, you know, whatever. And it's really interesting to see because you see things that can gone horribly wrong and do right. They do go wrong. She is fresh off the bus.
00:33:26
Jo
She was like, Oh, I was at a, I won an award in my high school theater in nowhere in Nebraska. And who cares? You know, And she's like, this will take me to Hollywood.
00:33:37
Jo
And the people are like, yeah, no. It starts shredding the CV. and like That's not how we do things here. Good luck.
00:33:44
Amelie
Yeah, when she goes to to go to interviews and she's like, hi, I would like to apply for job. No, we don't apply. They're all blonde and very skinny and said, no, we don't.
00:33:51
Jo
Yeah, we don't buy. Exactly.
00:33:55
Amelie
That's not the way we do.
00:33:57
Jo
Yeah.
00:33:57
Amelie
You need to go on Internet.
00:33:57
Jo
Yeah.
00:33:59
Jo
Yes, absolutely. And then she stumbles through all this. One of the cool aspects of the movie, like i said, it was multilayered. you're You're seeing two or three different stories at once because you're seeing flashbacks of her and her boyfriend and what happens.
00:34:14
Jo
And then you see her current life. And then you see this psychological drama thriller of it with the sleep lab. it We were saying it's not horrific. And I agree. I don't think it's a horror story, but I think it makes a great thriller.
00:34:28
Amelie
Yeah, because slowly, slowly, when you watch the movie, you realize she had a life before because I'm like, oh, she has a boyfriend and they've never been together.
00:34:29
Jo
A thriller drama.
00:34:32
Jo
Yeah.
00:34:37
Amelie
no, no. no She had a relationship. The relationship was consumed false for three years. And her friends are back home. She called her friend, but they're very busy.
00:34:46
Jo
Yeah.
00:34:47
Amelie
They have their own life and she has a home.
00:34:48
Jo
She's cheating on him or he he's cheating on her.
00:34:51
Amelie
No, they broke up.
00:34:53
Jo
They broke up, but he got over it way too soon.
00:34:56
Amelie
Yeah, that's what she said.
00:34:57
Jo
Yeah.
00:34:58
Amelie
That's what they all say. We broke up after three years of relationship. One month later, he's got a new girlfriend.
00:35:05
Jo
Yeah.
00:35:05
Amelie
Girl, girl, like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:35:08
Jo
Yeah. Like, it took me... It took me, like, therapist, plural, to demand I went dating afterwards. Because I was like, I don't want to date now. It feels like cheating. Yucky.
00:35:21
Jo
But yeah, I get it. I get it. And without spoiling the ending,
00:35:29
Jo
this to you, does the ending fit? does Is it worthy of the movie?
00:35:36
Jo
Without spoiling.
00:35:37
Amelie
It was rushed.
00:35:39
Jo
A bit. A bit.
00:35:41
Amelie
Mm-hm. Mm-hm.
00:35:41
Jo
But not too much. But not too much. When I'm... I agree. I think the ending was... Let's say act one strong, act two strong, act three strong. When I'm talking about the ending being rushed, I mean the last maybe two minutes.
00:35:54
Jo
Maybe four. Like it could have been a bit... Like the... Without... It's hard to talk about the ending without talking about the ending. But it might have been just like... It's an hour 32 movie, right?
00:36:08
Jo
Pretty sure. Yeah, this movie could have been an hour 45 and ended stronger, I think. It would have given time.
00:36:15
Amelie
I think if they done the movie, they should redone the horror part. The backstory and and the linked, yes, great with the Dream Fantastic guys, but you should retake the bad guy and the bad scene and just work on it.
00:36:32
Amelie
Work on it again.
00:36:32
Jo
Yeah.
00:36:34
Amelie
Because it's like you cut the movie in two with the backstory and the horror part.
00:36:39
Jo
The horror. but We'll say thriller, because it's really a thriller.
00:36:41
Amelie
The horror part should be reworked.
00:36:43
Jo
Yeah.
00:36:43
Amelie
Like it's a thriller, yeah.
00:36:45
Jo
Yeah.
00:36:45
Amelie
It's well done, linked, it makes sense, etc. etc ah But I was like, something missing. Like a little thing, a little thing.
00:36:52
Jo
Right.
00:36:52
Amelie
It's almost perfect.
00:36:53
Jo
But that's the thing. It's exactly almost perfect, a little bit missing. And I think that goes well and beyond most movies. That goes well and beyond most movies. So you liked it, right?
00:37:05
Amelie
I liked it, and it's a perfect movie to watch at night. Like, I had my kind of Coca-Cola, my big slice of pizza.
00:37:08
Jo
It is. really is. Yeah.
00:37:15
Amelie
I took my computer, I watched it, and I was like, this is perfect. This is a nice movie. I was really touched. It was really interesting. I liked the acting, and I enjoyed the movie.
00:37:26
Jo
Yeah.
00:37:27
Amelie
And once it was finished, I sent you a message and said, hey, watched it.
00:37:27
Jo
Me too.
00:37:32
Amelie
I liked it.
00:37:33
Jo
and know I know. was like, yeah, this is one of the things I thought you would like. And it is a movie I think everyone should watch. <unk> Somnium. I think everyone, especially if you are, you don't even have to be coming of age.
00:37:47
Jo
Because this is really a coming of age film. And if you ever remember how it like, I think this film would touch you. Especially if you're like both of us, apparently.
00:37:59
Jo
Well, we went from small towns and moved away in our teens. to go on our own, it hits a lot of themes that sound so familiar. Like they used to tell you like, you know, your friends in high school, they're not forever.
00:38:14
Jo
They're not. They're not. Anyone thinks your high school friend is going to be forever. Well, you didn't move out your fucking town then. It's pretty sad. You can have friends from high school that last for a long time, but not all of them will.
00:38:29
Jo
You know, most won't even know your name. So you see this, you connect to it, and you can connect to the angst of it. I think that's why they do the thriller part really well.
00:38:41
Jo
I would, I'm glad to see this. I would watch this again. I would. I would watch again, right? Yeah.
00:38:50
Amelie
Me too. Definitely.
00:38:51
Jo
Yeah.
00:38:51
Amelie
Definitely. But I'm wondering if a 20-something years old will watch it. Maybe if you're 20-something years old and you see that person struggling and stuff, do you really want to watch it?
00:38:57
Jo
Curious. I don't know.
00:39:04
Amelie
I don't know. is the same problem with the series Girls, with Lena Dehorme. Really good series. I watched it when I was 20-something.
00:39:14
Amelie
And now I'm past I'm almost 35 years old. What an old lady I am. And I rewatched the series. I'm like, um it's there is a bit of nostalgia. There is a bit of, I found myself in that situation. And I'm good.
00:39:29
Amelie
I survived. I'm good. So, yeah. Now I'm 35. I watch it. I'm like, yeah. I remember. feel it, girl. So flat, the little envelope, your friends who are not for forever.
00:39:43
Amelie
You try to call them. Hey, what's new? Well, just old news. How are you?
00:39:48
Jo
Yeah. They don't want to talk to you.
00:39:49
Amelie
How are you doing there?
00:39:49
Jo
Yeah.
00:39:50
Amelie
You know, like...
00:39:52
Jo
Or trying to find new friends at the arcade and like, which is weird. Here's this cute girl trying to talk to some arcade geek to see where what her where friend is at.
00:40:05
Jo
And they blow her off. I'm like, huh? I'm like, motherfucker, really?
00:40:12
Amelie
Never happened to me. like a girl who goes to boys uh... five minutes later you're thinking we've been waiting to be done you know what i mean back i i don't know like i'm sure you at your age you would go to to go and say hey i'm looking for that strength they want to hang out with us like leads like that enough of friends
00:40:20
Jo
Yeah.
00:40:22
Jo
Or some diner in Paris. Right.
00:40:34
Jo
Yeah. But it's but the the weird thing is, it's realistic because if you see where people are today, i can see that happening where they the guys just had no idea how to converse with a female.
00:40:52
Jo
know It's like the whole incel culture.
00:40:54
Amelie
maybe, maybe you're right. Maybe, you're right. Maybe, maybe.
00:40:57
Jo
at least the ones in the States that might be different in Europe because Europe is a bit more smaller.
00:41:01
Amelie
Look, I work in a hostel as a receptionist and my husband works at night as a, as as ah not a receptionist, but basically takes group of people to pubs or to the nightclub to guide them, you know, entertainers, something so.
00:41:03
Jo
Yeah.
00:41:16
Jo
Entertainment. He's an entertainment provider. provider
00:41:20
Amelie
Yeah, yeah, something like that, basically. And it's true the generation is different because they own a budget and they want to do their own thing, but there's still the yeah environment of guys and boys hanging together and going out, you know, like, no, I think there's still the people who talk to, I guess.
00:41:24
Jo
Director. Okay.
00:41:43
Jo
Maybe. Maybe. But that was one of the things that kind of made me go like, man, she's having a rough go at it. She really is. But i can I can kind of still see all of that. So, Somnium.
00:41:55
Jo
Decent movie. We both say watch it, right? Yeah, I say watch it. I'm going watch it again.
00:41:59
Amelie
Yeah, definitely watch it.
00:41:59
Jo
Why not? Yeah, not a horror movie, but it makes a great drama thriller. I'm not even sure if they put down that sci-fi. I agree. I'm like, god I don't think it's too sci-fi. It's more a drama thriller than anything.
00:42:11
Jo
But which is fine. Know your lane. So we went to that, and then I went to the theater yesterday,
00:42:18
Amelie
Mm-hmm.
00:42:18
Jo
And I saw weapons based upon me going, I want to watch a movie.
00:42:23
Amelie
Okay.
00:42:24
Amelie
Did you watch the trailer before going to the cinema, like out of shit curiosity?
00:42:24
Jo
And God, I watched maybe,
00:42:34
Jo
I might've seen the trailer for weapons during Fantastic Four. Maybe, or maybe I saw on like Amazon Prime or something like that. So you watched the trailer. I didn't really pay attention to the trailer.
00:42:47
Amelie
I watched the trailer out of shit curiosity, like I watched series of trailers and I saw that trailer.
00:42:51
Jo
Yeah.
00:42:54
Amelie
I was attracted by the trailer because of the plot. So it's a day at school. Everybody goes to the class.
00:43:04
Jo
Yeah.
00:43:07
Amelie
But for that teacher, her class was empty. And I'm like, that's interesting. Because at three games in the morning, they wake up and went and disappeared into thin air.
00:43:18
Jo
It disappeared forever and ever and ever.
00:43:19
Amelie
And I'm like, I like that. Because I'm like, That's a teacher who arrived and there is no student. And you imagine going to the, we call it the CPU in French, the office saying, what the fuck is going on?
00:43:29
Jo
Scary.
00:43:35
Amelie
Where I class? And they start to call the parents and find out they all disappeared. And they disappeared around 3 a.m.
00:43:40
Jo
Yeah.
00:43:42
Amelie
m in the morning. Time, as a mother, i am dead asleep.
00:43:44
Jo
All but one.
00:43:48
Amelie
You can ask my husband if her baby is crying at 3 a.m.
00:43:49
Jo
Yeah.
00:43:50
Amelie
in the morning. I'm dead in a pure coma. I don't know. I'm sleeping. You need to shock me to wake me up. Not midnight, not 6 a.m., not 5 a.m., 3 a.m.
00:44:02
Amelie
is the morning. Very specific. I'm like, that's an interesting plot.
00:44:07
Jo
Oh, I think it was 217, but yeah. You didn't watch it, so I'm giving a mulligan on these. But yeah, exactly it. but People are asleep, and they have it so the the ring cameras see their children running away in one direction.
00:44:25
Jo
And it is weird. Because if I were a teacher coming in and I see all but one student missing, I mean, everyone's missing but one student. like, this is going to light fucking day for me.
00:44:39
Jo
And she does it really well. I will liken this to Somnium because i don't think this is a horror movie.
00:44:55
Jo
I do not think Weapons is a horror movie. I actually didn't think The Witch was a horror movie. And sometimes get a lot of shit for that. Yes, The Witch, that great movie that won the awards and Stephen King said was the best horror movie in fucking existence or whatever. is It's not a horror movie for me.
00:45:11
Jo
It's a great drama. It's a period piece. But it's not a horror movie. It's not a horror movie for me. Weapons. Well-writ. Well-acted.
00:45:24
Jo
Directed. Not a fucking horror movie. They're saying psychological horror? No. Supernatural horror? Fuck off. Which horror? which Which horror do you fucking see? It's sort of held down on screen.
00:45:35
Jo
They should say, which horror? We don't have one. Mystery. It's bit of a mystery.
00:45:41
Amelie
So it's like going to McDonald's and say, hi, I would like a sundae with chocolate topping and nuts. And they give you just the ice cream, but no chocolate topping and not nuts.
00:45:50
Jo
No.
00:45:52
Jo
Not even. It's like going McDonald's saying, hi, I like a steak.
00:45:59
Jo
And they're like, what the fuck? I want some spaghetti. They had burger joke.
00:46:04
Amelie
Oh, la vache.
00:46:06
Jo
Yeah, yeah. So it not what I thought it would be.
00:46:09
Amelie
Mm-hmm.
00:46:10
Jo
And I'm like a self-conscious popcorn eater. I don't like making noise. So i'm like, oh, it's a horror movie. They're like, blah, blah. I'm like, I'll eat popcorn in peace. Yeah, there's like three fucking people in the theater with me.
00:46:22
Jo
I'm like, oh, this not great.
00:46:23
Amelie
huh
00:46:23
Jo
It was also 3, 8 p.m. on a Friday.
00:46:26
Amelie
Yeah.
00:46:27
Jo
So I don't like people. And I'm like, eating popcorn. Because it's so fucking quiet in this goddamn film.
00:46:36
Amelie
Really?
00:46:37
Jo
This film is a pin drop. It's got three or four scenes total that have any sound that's going to go above.
00:46:46
Amelie
There were no music.
00:46:49
Jo
Barely. Barely fucking anything. And it's it's well done. i'm not trying to bang on it, but this is like... Don't watch this in the theater.
00:47:00
Jo
There's no need for it whatsoever. You could watch this shit at home. This is Netflix at best. Two hours and eight minutes. It's... It's weird because Julia Gardner, who plays the Silver Surfer in the Fantastic Four movie, does a brilliant job playing the teacher.
00:47:21
Jo
You know, you have Josh Brolin, who is also in the Marvel films, does a brilliant job at playing a grieving dad.
00:47:33
Jo
At the same time, I'm like, can't he just snap this shit and like bring his kid back? Is that Thanos still already cabled? Does he go back in time in this shit? And you see everything else. there's There's comedic moments. There's some deep moments.
00:47:50
Jo
There's things that go together. acting. Even... Even the children act well. Meaning, like, Cary Christopher is amazing in this film. And a lot of times when use a kid's actor, it's like, just shit. You know, it brings the film fucking down because kids can't act for shit.
00:48:08
Jo
But Cary Christopher is amazing in this. He plays exactly how you should do it. And the way they tell the story, they do it bit. by bit character by character. You see a little bit of the story, like the first 10, 15 minutes, you see ah ah story.
00:48:24
Jo
Like they're they're going to the PTA meeting after the kids don't show up and they're trying to explain and stuff like that And it starts out with Scarlet Share narrating.
00:48:36
Jo
And Scarlet Share sounds like a small child narrating. I have no idea how old Scarlet Share is right now. But she hits the time. and she shifts the time She hits the the phraseology. She hits the... the Not the timbre of her voice, but just the way she's speaking. It sounds like a small child trying to tell you a story.
00:49:01
Jo
And that's what sets the tone for the rest of the movie. And then they go back and they show each... Basically, let's say the movie takes place over four or five days, a weekend, whatever it's going be.
00:49:13
Jo
They'll show it from one character's point of view and then rewind. Show it from another person's point of view and rewind. And third and a fourth and so on until you get the full fleshed out story. I think that was a good idea.
00:49:25
Jo
It works really well.
00:49:28
Amelie
So you like the movie in a sense, like it was well done.
00:49:30
Jo
i that's the That's the weirdest thing. I was in mood of a horror horror movie. The Conjuring's coming out. ah ah with the last rites, and I was in the mood for something like that.
00:49:44
Jo
And I thought Weapons was something like that, because the poster looks like something like that. And it's not. It's not a horror movie. It is, some people say it's a dark comedy. IMDb is dark comedy.
00:49:57
Jo
I wouldn't even say it's a dark comedy. It's more of a psychological... drama or not quite a thriller thriller, but it's definitely not psychological horror. You know, I think it's misgenred.
00:50:13
Jo
That's just me. Maybe I'm dumb. I don't know. But I think it's a great movie. That's the weirdest thing. It's not what I came in for. It's like if I went to McDonald's, I say, give me a a steak, and they gave me the best lasagna I've ever had in my life.
00:50:30
Jo
I'm like, that's not what I'm here for. First of all, you're McDonald's. What the fuck's this? But since I'm here, this is the best fucking lasagna I've ever heard in my life, sir. Thank you. It's one of those things, like, i wouldn't expect it.
00:50:43
Jo
i didn't think it was the genre I was expecting. But it's so well done, I forgive it. I forgive it for misleading me. and Plus, I didn't really see the trailer, so maybe it's on me anyways.
00:50:57
Amelie
Now when you watch the trailer, it's over.
00:51:00
Jo
Oh, is it really? Yeah, it's not horror.
00:51:01
Amelie
Yeah, yeah, because of the cut and everything.
00:51:02
Jo
Sorry, there's there's no fucking horror in this.
00:51:05
Amelie
We talked about it with Dexter when you asked me to watch the series.
00:51:05
Jo
so
00:51:10
Amelie
You were really, really pushing me to watch the series. And I watched the trailer and I was disappointed, right?
00:51:13
Jo
For Resurrection.
00:51:16
Jo
Yeah.
00:51:17
Amelie
And here's the thing. You have the movie, we you have the artistic vision, right? And then they need to sell the movie. Sometimes they act too.
00:51:26
Jo
Yeah, and the trailer, yeah. Yeah, like Dexter Resurrection is a great TV show. The trailer's dog shit. I've never watched a trailer for weapons. If I did, like I said, it might have been Fantastic Four. I wasn't paying attention.
00:51:40
Jo
By the poster and the vibe and what they actually say is horror, horror, horror, it ain't fucking horror. But it's a good movie. I would love to watch this again.
00:51:54
Jo
I think when I was sitting down watching it with my horror eye on, i was like, oh, jump scare. The jump scares don't work. they're They're quite like, boring as hell, jump scares.
00:52:05
Jo
But the humanity of it, this is where the strength comes in. The characters, the actors and actresses who portray them, the direction, the writing, that pulls it through.
00:52:19
Jo
That pulls it through. And you by the end, I didn't care it wasn't horror. It was just a good movie. Like some of them. I didn't care it wasn't horror. It was a good movie.
00:52:28
Jo
You know, and they're not, some them not trying to be horror, I guess. This one's, Weapons is definitely trying to be horror in genre-wise, in marketing-wise, but it's it's not fucking horror.
00:52:40
Jo
ah ah You just can't get me to believe that's horror. But, would I see it again? Yes. Do I suggest you see it in the movies? Fuck no. Not needed. Rent this shit.
00:52:52
Jo
Watch it on Netflix when it comes out. Whatever. Whoever gets rights to this film. rehett stream it. That's where it belongs. In your fucking house. Streaming. Doesn't belong in the, well, it belongs in the theater. That's a dick thing me to say all otherwise.
00:53:06
Jo
But I, I wouldn't spend your money to go see it in the theater. There's no reason. But you should watch it. It's a good movie. You know?
00:53:15
Amelie
Okay, I will.
00:53:16
Jo
Yeah. Yeah, it would be, you know what, if it might be a good date, might be a good date movie. If you're into like psychological things like that, I think it would be Cape Fear.
00:53:27
Jo
and might be the movie of best. Yeah. If you like Cape Fear, you might like this movie.
00:53:33
Jo
It's something akin to that. I think that they kind of mislabeled that book. Is Cape Fear horror? No. Not fucking really.
00:53:41
Jo
So there you have it. we've We started a day out with Night of Violence, which I watched and hated it. Thank you, Living Color. ahs Somnium, which we both watched.
00:53:54
Jo
Loved it.
00:53:58
Jo
weapons that I watched that you haven't watched yet and maybe one day you'll watch on streaming loved it but loved it but not horror well am I upset I saw in the theater yeah yeah
00:54:06
Amelie
But interesting movie. Interesting movie with interesting synopsis to watch maybe is going to be You know, having a second fame with Netflix or something like that.
00:54:18
Jo
I think it will I think it will and that's the thing like was I upset watching it in the theater no I enjoyed the theater experience I did But I don't think you need it.
00:54:30
Jo
You know, it's not James Bond. It's not Doomsday. It's nothing like that where should be in the fucking theater for But yeah, that there we go. There's our three movies. And next week we're doing Dexter, Xer, Xer Resurrection.
00:54:43
Jo
All that and more. on the next Streaming Demons. For everyone else, I say, behalf of myself, Joe, and I'm going to say, good day. by y'alls.
00:54:54
Amelie
Bye-bye.
00:54:54
Jo
