Jo: Hey everyone, Joey here and Emily. Good morning to y'all. Or afternoon, or evening, or late night, or midnight, or after midnight, or in a really weird time, you're just kind of like coming home drunk.
Jo: Today's streaming demons, we have Influencers from Shudder. Influencers, the new one, which is 2025, which is a sequel to the old Influencer, which was 2022, 3, something like that.
Jo: and I have seen Influencer, the original movie. Amelie, did you? I don't think you did.
Amelie: No, I did not.
Jo: Okay, so I have a bit of a background more than Amelie had for this movie, and I'm going to say i don't think you needed to see Influencer to enjoy Influencers.
Amelie: Correct, yes.
Jo: There you
Amelie: Actually, it's fantastic because you follow the journey of a lesbian couple. One is in a... Can we spoil or not spoil?
Jo: No spoilers.
Amelie: Okay, so we follow over at the beginning of the movie a lesbian couple who goes to France in the vineyard to spend a weekend getaway as a romantic couple.
Amelie: And if you didn't follow the first episode of that horror movie, well it's okay because you have the point of view of the girlfriend who is French.
Jo: That was so disappointing. Yeah, I got to watch this with Amelie and she's like, oh, this is this place. This is this place. dada da oh this it thatta and ah jajanna Diana, Diana, Deanne.
Jo: It was a real joy. now um um i'm being i sound sarcastic, but it was a real joy because you you're picking up a lot of locations and stuff that.
Amelie: yeah.
Jo: and It can say, again, it can say in IMDb, in southern France, a young woman's chilling fascination with murder and identity theft sends her life into a whirlwind of chaos. You know, written, directed by Curtis David Harder.
Jo: And there are some people that follow through from the original movie, like Cassandra nods back as CW and the tenant is back. um I'm trying to get tenants name right now, not the name, but Emily tenants back as Madison.
Jo: So there's people that continue through it. One of the cool things for me, besides the setting, I'm like, man, I want to visit now. It took about 20 minutes before the title screen appears.
Jo: Remember, we were watching this movie. I'm like, I thought it was a screener. Like, maybe the screener was just, like, not letting me see the beginning. So I kind of fast forward first five seconds. Maybe I miss it then.
Jo: no. no The movie is so... It sucks you in so quickly. You forgot. You didn't see the actual title yet for 20 minutes until it appears and it's... I'm like, oh, my God.
Jo: Like, the first act. Right? I mean, what did you think about... Not so much the acting or of nothing like that right now, but how it starts. We had some movies that were just slow stars.
Amelie: i like it I like it because it's clack clack clack.
Jo: Yeah.
Amelie: You are wondering what could be the and then you get to the movie, you see the different situation, story, etc.
Jo: Yeah.
Amelie: hu and it leads to that scene and you're like, oh well done, now I get it.
Jo: Yeah.
Amelie: I was pleasantly surprised. It's a very interesting movie. it A little bit slow when it's in France in the hotel, would admit it its for my taste. But actors are great, storyline is good.
Amelie: um The way it was writing, it's excellent. I recognize the different places, but it's not over the top like it's not France viewed by Americans, it's actual France.
Amelie: Like I've been to some different places and was very excited because it reminds me of home.
Jo: You were. Yep.
Amelie: So I say, yeah, this is France. This is a castle I used to work with. a Situation reception like this. I work that kind of reception. Yes, it looks bold like that. It's kind of castle. You find a lot of castle like that in places around France. You even say, hey, it should be trespassing. I say, no. In France, it's public domain. So you can go take pictures and stuff.
Amelie: It's pretty dangerous, but fun to go. um also i really like the different place in bali i recognize because i've been traveling there so i'm like yeah i recognize the temple organize the the road the scooter etc so they went to the different places top notch um it's a different character i like it there's one character i thought she was going to be dumb but she was really really smart and sharp and even you you really liked her i'm like yeah i like that
Jo: I like characters. in with Well, that's the thing. They are, you said it was well-written and Curtis David Harder wrote and directed. It is well-written. It is. It's well paced to You said that a little bit slow when they get to the like the hotel in France.
Jo: And yes, it does slow down. But I think that's realistic because that's what the couple is trying to do But the couple themselves are trying to slow everything everything down just take a little relaxation.
Jo: And all these little micro issues that you if you've ever gone on any trip at all, they run into a few. And then I had a question, and this is, going to say no spoiling, meaning we can't tell the ending. There's no, you know, anything twist. We can't tell who lives or dies or anything like that.
Jo: But I had questions based upon, like, do people really talk to each other like that when you're like they don't know you. And they're sitting down, you're like, at the pool, like, oh, you're my new best friend. You're out all these things.
Amelie: Yes, definitely. When I've been traveling and working in different hotels and hostels, there are different types of people. There are people who travel Like for example, if you and I, we would be in a hotel or romantic weekend, we would speak to no one. It would be just you and me, restaurant, boom, it's a weekend, we're going to do different things, we're going to see a museum, we're going too visit to visit a castle.
Amelie: It's just romantic, me and you.
Jo: castles.
Amelie: But I met a lot couples, especially Americans, even if they are in a weekend getaway, they like to socialize with other people. So they will go to a bar, have a couple of drinks, and talk to an American who come along.
Jo: That's so dreadful.
Amelie: It's very American. A lot of women, especially Americans, they like to talk to everyone. That's why um American women do have the bad reputation to be a little bit noisy.
Amelie: um ah around couples and people in hotels. Like always talking out loud, always trying to socialize, while French people, when we are in a group of people, we're just with a group of people.
Jo: Right.
Amelie: For example, if you go to France and you have a group of women drinking at a table wine and and talking, it's just them. They don't want to seduce anyone. They just want to be between women, have conversation, a girl out. You see what I mean?
Amelie: that's what we do frenchwoman uh it is it is respected uh often it's englishmen or english english speaker who don't understand the dynamic so often the waiter explain right english people even women they like to go to a bar to talk to everyone so let's take for example me and an englishwoman i will go to a bar
Jo: Is that respected? i have question because...
Jo: Okay. Yeah.

Amelie: I will ask for a beer or a glass of wine, I will drink and I will be just by myself, maybe with a book or something like that. Or with my friend Camille, I will have a conversation. how have you been, how is work, etc. You get a promotion, congratulations. How are the kids, the kids are good. I'm a bit concerned about Leon for all his speech delay.
Amelie: I'm not going to be there to seduce, single or not single. eve I'm English and my friend Camille is English. She's going to, hey, what's your name? Where are you from? I really like your bag.

Jo: Hey, sir, would you like me to buy you a drink? And this is one of the things I kind of commented on when this there was a scene Influencers where it's just an influencer walks up to a woman and says, oh, she's going to have this.
Jo: I'm like, no, you ask her, can I buy you a drink first? And then you buy the drink or not, depending what she's asked. Don't assume they're going to hit on her by making her ah get a drink.
Amelie: Correct.
Jo: Like, like, at least let her say yes or no to that question. Like, this is kind of a douchebag move. And like, yeah, that's common.
Amelie: Yes.
Jo: i'm like, oh, fuck, that is probably common. So like I'm saying the writing, it it marks well to what is realistic.
Amelie: Yes.
Amelie: okay Yes.
Jo: And unfortunately, a lot of what's realistic is just shit.
Amelie: Yeah, for example, when you say, is it normal to socialize? Completely. How many times you have, even as a girl, two girls together, one one just wants to read a book, like the hero, the main character or of this movie, and somebody tries to speak to her, an American, of course, and the French...
Jo: Yeah.
Jo: And the sunbathing.
Amelie: sympathize with her befriend her play in the so in in the swimming pool with her let's go to dinner with her let's be extroverted you know what i mean she's a cool girl she just wants to speak english you know she's very excited that woman from america oh come on she's cool she wants to invite us for dinner be kind na and di and nana and the girlfriend is like no but we're supposed to be just you and i like uh i don't want to be a bitch but voila

Amelie: Lesbian or not lesbian, I've been in that situation. We've all been in that situation. Okay, we're going to go and big smile. And the character said it. Excuse me, you're not sister. You're an actual couple.

Jo: Yeah, that's exactly, that was the the key for me. and And I think you're right. Where the people in, like the bad guys in this movie are actually the influencers.
Jo: It's just such a burnout. Like if I am at the resort, I do not want you to fucking talk to me. We talked about this before. Like my on-cam personality is nothing like me in real life.
Jo: I'm an introvert. I am just like, shut the fuck down. i want to detach.
Amelie: yeah
Jo: I will go to concerts. I will i will help set up events. I will be great on the mic anywhere you want me. But leave me the fuck alone.

Amelie: And these kind of people who are not the most intelligent. Do you remember when we went to the Bone Chapel? in Prague to visit and there was a lady who was single was talking about Israel and she was talking about the hurrah gun.
Jo: Yes. Oh, fuck. Yeah. I know it.
Amelie: I don't understand why the house are not in brick because if it was in brick when the tornado come it wouldn't move right with the other couple.
Jo: It's like, shut up. As soon as you said that, I knew exactly what conversational it was.
Amelie: Yeah.
Jo: And this is not like the... It was weird because they're talking about... The couple started talking about... Again, we're not trying to listen, but they're loud as fuck.
Jo: They were loud as fuck talking. And they're like, oh, we live in this blah, blah, blah. And you know we go through the the bottom you know the air raids come in. We get into our little thing. And it still stands.
Jo: We're like, yeah, that's not a fucking tornado. mu like No, shut the fuck up. Just shut the fuck up. Please shut the fuck up.
Amelie: and during all the visits they speak very loud they're in the minibus with us they speak very loud like that so yes you know my father who went to israel and blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah i knew everything about her grandparents i knew everything about her breakfast
Jo: Yeah.
Amelie: And that person was not friends with these people. It's a couple of Americans who came to visit Prague for the first time.
Jo: No.
Amelie: They visited first Berlin to tell you how they were speaking so loud.
Jo: Yeah.
Amelie: And they stick together. So that kind of character exists in real life and we met her.
Jo: but we better And the the sad thing is, though that was a young couple. like They could have just been like, get the fuck away from us. Like what, like you bought a ticket to a, the bone castle. you haven't gone to bone castle in Prague, please do. So it's pretty cool. But we basically bought a ticket to a tour.
Jo: You're not part of the tour. it wasn't the tour guy trying to chat someone up The tour guy was working. It wasn't this, it's just some random person that felt like buying a tour ticket allowed them to talk a nonstop.
Jo: to everyone else. If they're a couple or sogle or whatever, I'm like, my fucking God. It was horrendous. Now, take that experience.
Amelie: And that's what the movie shows.
Jo: That's it. Yeah.
Amelie: It's, I am a solo traveler, I'm not afraid of anything. or Okay, so solo travel woman. Yeah, but it allowed me to meet so many people. Are you meeting people or taking them in hostage?
Amelie: Because um when you want to meet people, i advise you to go to youth hostel. Youth hostel between 18 to 35 years old, yeah, go for gold, go to only women hostel, go to mixed hostel, go to party hostel, meet people.
Amelie: Be very careful with the age because some hostel welcome more younger, meaning 18 to 25, and others accept plus 30.
Jo: Sounds dreadful.
Jo: Like me.
Amelie: And you will meet a lot of people. people who come to study, people who have a very interesting background, people who come to travel, people who want to study travel, go for it. I advise you to go to U4Stell when you're young. You can meet people who don't speak English very well, people from South Latin America, people with all kinds of backstories.
Amelie: Go for gold. But if you go to a five-star hotel,
Amelie: you're alone stay alone okay except if you see one single person who invites you to to get a drink yeah sure cool there is spaces to do things you know you want to go to a bar and suggest people go for gold you go to a five-star hotel no you except if you are a sex worker that's uh none of my business right but yes there is a things to
Jo: Yeah.

Amelie: Ah, you know, you know, theits you Yeah.
Jo: Well, that's the thing. like That's what Georgina Campbell, who plays the influencer Charlotte, she does really well. She has the energy and the vibe that once we see her talking, we're like, oh, is this... We all know someone just like her. We're like, oh my god, this is this is this person? And you kind of hope, like, man, hope she dies.
Jo: You kind of hope, like, immediately, you're just like, oh man, this...
Amelie: yeah
Jo: And no spoilers here, but... A lot of influencers are just toxic here. a lot are toxic. The movie explores the influencer culture.
Jo: I just did a couple weeks on this myself, where we're exploring like why are influencers popular, what drives the logarithms, who actually give a shit about their fucking day, and it's mostly fake anyways.
Amelie: Thank you.
Jo: Are people are just just just dumb? And the answer is, like yeah, people are just as fucking dumb now. And it is almost cathartic to watch this. This is one of the films. We watch it.
Jo: I was rooting for the bad guy. i was like, motherfucker, it's my thing, man. Let's just do it all. he got You know, I'll hold him.
Amelie: I would like to point out the movie did excellent job with modernity.
Jo: You hit him.
Jo: Yes.
Amelie: Mobile phone, computer, photographer, photographer with phone, photographer with modern camera, right? Like professional one.
Amelie: Photographer with old school camera. Everything is set up. every character a genre and it's believable and the work was very well done yes and the way they use technology top top how many times i watch a movie or series when they try to be modern to integrate fonts and conversation and stuff and you feel it's little bit off a little bit characteristic
Jo: It's believable. It's believable with the setting. It's believable. Yeah.
Amelie: Here, no. AI is well used. We haven't joked about, oh, I'm using AI the way she uses AI. Number two, there is different kind influencer.
Jo: Yeah, we won't say why, but yeah that does happen in real life.
Amelie: For example, there is one character who is interviewed during a podcast. It is true. Nowadays, people don't watch TV anymore. It's podcast. I've got my favorite podcast.
Amelie: You've got your favorite podcast. Like if I say Joe Rogan, everybody knows Joe Rogan, you know, before it was like, for example, ah do you know?
Jo: Yeah, my favorite podcast is fucking mine.
Jo: I never watch this podcast.
Amelie: I don't know, for example, Jimmy Kimmel or something like that. It's it used to be a world of

Amelie: right then you have for example a different um how can i say streamer you have difference you you have models streamr etc infreancer model model influencer etc but even the first one and i'm very excited about that movie for that it's she's not the same influencer modern than the one in bali

Jo: Yeah, the whole group that they're starting out, it does it well.
Amelie: The one at the beginning of the movie, she stayed by the hotel.

Amelie: So she goes to different places to play the model, to take pictures with the wine, to take pictures with the bedroom, etc., and she asked to do publicity for the hotel so she went to the receptionist and she complained and she's like the room is very small how do you want me to advertise that and there is a conversation with the bad girl she say hey if they succeed to take a good picture you can make the bedroom bigger that's her job she's actually a publicist more than something else while the woman in bali
Jo: Yeah, the pool. other kids they made it oh Yeah. Right. It works well.
Amelie: she's a model with influencer who's lack of coach you see what i mean i love that for the movie it's taking the different kind of influencers the problem who they are etc and they're all different so it's not just a caricature of oh i'm beautiful and dumb ahhhu na no no no no they're believable like even the first girl
Jo: There's multiple layers. Yeah.

Amelie: yeah exactly exactly and that's really fantastic i think it's brilliant i was entertained by that like even the first girl i was like okay she pissed me off but uh i wanted to protect her was like fuck i'm so sorry for you you know what i mean or for example belly girl belly girl i will call her uh she's really intelligent intelligent she's really sharp and she could have
Jo: Yeah.

Amelie: fell into the the trump of oh i'm hot and sexy and that's all not at all like you can see it's people with different layers they've got self-esteem issues they have money issue they love each other etc they're not just a beautiful picture and i like that

Jo: It does another thing as well. and it I think we you and I had this conversation about I hated bros. I didn't want to see bros. I did not see bros. like But then I got shit for not wanting to see bros because like, oh, have to support gay art. I'm like, no, I don't. What the fuck?
Jo: If it makes something better, I'll support it. They are a lesbian couple. But no one gives a shit about it.
Jo: Like the movie doesn't give, they they're just a basically a couple. Like they're just a couple and the movie's not pounding in the fucking face. like we we okay going dar That's how it should be done.
Jo: We talked about representation before where it's like, okay, the like a Chinese guy, check that one off. Fuck off, man. Just make people people and representation will be done.
Jo: And this movie really nails that well. Is this the development of the characters we actually start caring about? No matter how short or long they are on camera, you start caring about them. eat There's everyone a good guy? no not everyone's a good guy. You know, there's people who are just like you you hope, honestly, like hope this die in this in this film because this is how crappy they are.
Jo: And they're all played well. If I... Wanted the character to die, that means the actor or actress is doing something good with that character.
Jo: If I don't care if they die or not, that means the game's over. Why am I watching this movie? like I just want the movie end. I don't care if the fucking person dies or not. But you do. you You invest no matter how quickly they appear or not on screen. you You kind of invest in the character. And that goes back into the acting wells of writing.
Jo: And this movie is slick. It's Shudder. It is slick. It is well done. It was like, what, an hour and a half? An hour and 50 minutes.
Jo: Hour and 50 minutes flew by. Absolutely. We've seen movies that were like an hour and 50 minutes. That one movie i started to do other things. Like, what was I doing? Like taxes or something like that?
Jo: Like, I'm going to my taxes right now. and Fucking do this and instead. No, i' was watching this movie. Influencers 2025. You know. you. Yeah.
Amelie: And we didn't cut.
Jo: What was that?
Amelie: We didn't cut. We didn't stop for a moment. we We really watched it from the beginning to the end. It was entertaining.
Jo: Yeah.
Amelie: Like, it was interesting.
Jo: It was was wonderful.
Amelie: Like, you don't watch it just for the death. You watch it thinking, how did she manage to survive and not get arrested?
Jo: Yeah. There's a story.
Amelie: And that's super interesting. Plus, you have different characters you see, not for a long period of time, but they're interesting.
Jo: Yeah. Yeah.
Amelie: Like they have a backstory and there is a backstory of in influencer, what kind of influencer they are, what's their consequences, do they like their job, do they feel a little shame, what's their inner problem.
Jo: yeah
Amelie: Like for example, there is a component of influencer, they're influencer A and influencer B, but there is their persona in real life as a couple and at the same time,
Jo: yeah
Amelie: they have problems. One is doing a little bit of drugs and the other one is a little bit sketchy.
Jo: Yeah, they're real people.
Amelie: But you can't judge them because they're very human.
Jo: Yeah, it's real.
Jo: That's exactly it. Where we've seen other times they'll give you a background story like exposition of the Yang and back and we're like I don't really care.
Amelie: Yeah.
Jo: I don't need that much background story for this character. I don't care about him.
Jo: Not even sure how much background story would we get. Exposition wise, it's just you see them in their natural environment and then you then understand who their character is by get this everyone, their fucking actions.
Jo: You see that the characters are by how they act, just like you would in life. And that's one of the things that I wish more movies did and influencers hit this spot on.
Jo: where they treat people like people. And by doing so, allowing the characters to be people, we, the viewer don't need everything spoon fed to us. We can then make our connections for ourselves. And it makes a movie more interesting for me.
Jo: Versus here's this character. This is where they came from. i'm Like, fuck me, man. I don't need this shit. But this is definitely Influencers 2, 2025.
Jo: It is Shudder. Check it out. My big question to you is, would you have seen this? We both watched it, and obviously it's Shudder, so it's going to be streaming.
Jo: Would you watch this in a theater?
Amelie: Yes, yes, for the long for the long age, it's a very high quality tim movie.
Jo: Yeah, think so.
Jo: Oh, yeah.
Amelie: The French speak French. Ladies and gentlemen, the French actors are French and they speak French and they look French.
Jo: I know.
Amelie: And when they're in France, they're France. When they're in Bali, they're in Bali. So everything is in po on point. Like it's very realistic. It's top notch. It's great. It's good.
Jo: Yeah, and that's one of the things you picked up apart because sometimes Johnny Depp does an amazing Quebecois accent. If you haven't seen Johnny Depp in Kevin Smith movies, you should probably do it. Yoga Hosers and the Walt Chosk.
Jo: And one day, ah you know, Moose Jaws. But he does an amazing Quebeco accent. If anyone's from Quebec, they always pick it apart. And like this is the best thing, accent-wise, I ever heard from a non-Quebec speaker.
Jo: You did the same thing for the French. And they're like, oh, this this is an amazing French accent. This is exactly what you say. This is what the you know the the whole rhythm of the doll. And yeah, that the small things like that build up. And I'll tell you right now, Cassandra, no?
Jo: Canadian.
Jo: She's not French. She's Canadian. ah one The one that plays CW. And then you look at Emily Tennant, Madison. Canadian. From Vancouver.
Jo: That even fucking French there. You know, so they are putting a lot of work into their acting. Like they worked with coaches on this and you don't even think this, put it this way. If two Canadian actresses are doing a movie or speaking French, usually the Quebecois comes out. It does not.
Jo: They fooled you. They fooled Emily. I'm calling you Emily instead Amelie.
Amelie: They fooled me.
Jo: Because we made that.
Amelie: They fooled me. Yeah, because here's the thing.
Jo: Yeah.
Amelie: In the movie, the girlfriend is called Diane, Diane, Diane, except by the mother who is French and call her Diane, Diane, Diane, which is her name. So English-native speaker always called ja Diane, Diane, Diane, Diane.
Amelie: So there is really this little note like that I really like, especially during the conversations, the telephone conversation.
Jo: Yeah.
Amelie: Diane, Diane, you mean Diane. Diane, my fille Diane. And that's on point. I really like it.
Jo: Yeah.
Amelie: It's little thing like that.
Jo: Diane played by...
Amelie: It's not extraordinary. There is no CGI, etc. But... but

Amelie: It's the movie who is well written with excellent actors, amazing landscape, etc. And what they did is we're going to use everything. The way people dress, the way people act, etc.
Amelie: There is no need of big monster. But if you want a lot of blood, go see this movie. If you like to travel, see this movie. If you like French, go see this movie.
Jo: Yeah, it's a good travel movie.
Amelie: Yeah.

Jo: I'll tell you that. But it is something that you could watch on a good horror night. It's a couples movie type thing. It's a singles movie. what do you want. Just don't, you know, it's not little kids.
Jo: It's not fucking Charlie Brown Christmas.
Amelie: Yeah, guys, guys, just watch that movie. with your loved one on tv in a sofa with a box of chocolates and some good french wine i would advise you that
Jo: Yeah.
Jo: I think it'll make it well. So that's it for us. Influencers, plural 2025. And the cool thing is we both agreed. You do not need to see the original influencer. You can, no one's going to stop you. It's a good movie on its own original influencer.
Jo: You can go straight into this one and it still has a great effect. And matter of fact, watching this one might make you want to watch the original influencer.
Amelie: I'm going to watch the original.
Jo: It's not, you want to see the background story.
