Introduction to Photography Business Myths

00:00:00
Speaker
Hey, Empowered Photographer, welcome back. I want to ask you if you are believing any of the following common myths about why your photography business isn't working, and even worse, if you are allowing these myths to sabotage your success.

Is the Photography Industry Too Saturated?

00:00:21
Speaker
Number one, our industry is too saturated. This is the most popular one. Everyone loves to talk about this. It's such a common misconception. Every industry is saturated.
00:00:33
Speaker
Shoe industries, restaurants, computer, they're all out saturated. Blaming your lack of success on your competition is a one-way ticket to failure.
00:00:44
Speaker
I can guarantee you that there is enough business for all of us.

Shifting Focus from Competition to Self

00:00:48
Speaker
Those of us who are successful, we don't worry about our industry being saturated. Instead, we think of it as a sign of our industry thriving.
00:00:57
Speaker
So flip the script and stop watching. obsessing over your competition and focus on you and you will see and feel an immediate shift.

The Role of Marketing and Social Media

00:01:10
Speaker
The next myth. I hate marketing and I hate social media so I never get clients. So the myth is that you think that the reason you don't get clients is because you hate social media.
00:01:20
Speaker
Well, if you believe this and you are saying this to yourself, then it's time to change your internal narrative. Marketing is an essential part of your photography business, and it does not need to be gross, and it should feel heart-centered and natural.
00:01:35
Speaker
So you probably hate marketing simply because you don't understand it. So stop sabotaging your success with this limiting belief.

Dealing with Cheaper Competitors

00:01:44
Speaker
Here is another popular myth, underpriced competition, underpriced photographers are undercutting our industry and that's why I don't have any business.
00:01:53
Speaker
Listen to me friend, your business is not failing because of someone else's pricing, I promise. Focus on the value that your business can provide for the price that you are charging and stop worrying about other people's prices.
00:02:07
Speaker
Nobody is saying, look at Elena's photography, but there's this other person who's $100. I'm going to go to that person. They're not because the person who's $100 is less experienced than me, doesn't have as a good skill level as I do, doesn't have the systems that I have, doesn't have ah the value that I have.
00:02:27
Speaker
And that's okay. That's where they are.

Time Management for Business Growth

00:02:29
Speaker
Someone who wants my business and wants my art is coming to me for the artist that I am, and they will easily and seamlessly pay the price that I have.
00:02:38
Speaker
Next myth. I don't have enough time to grow my photography business. This is every mother's favorite one. If you want this to work, you're going to put in the time. I grew my business while having babies and holding a full-time job as a NICU nurse.
00:02:50
Speaker
If I can do it, so can you. And I'm not telling you to subscribe to hustle culture. I'm just telling you to start taking this seriously and stop using time as an excuse. So check on check in to see if you're using it as an excuse, maybe because you're afraid of success.
00:03:03
Speaker
If you succeed at this photography business, everyone in your life is going to know you're a photographer, and that can be a little scary. You also have to start taking this seriously, and you might miss a couple of things in your kids' lives. That's also okay.
00:03:16
Speaker
You might also be afraid of failure, yes, but I do find that most mothers are actually a little bit afraid of what it takes to be successful. And i want to get out of i want you to get that narrative out of your head. I am an incredibly present mom.
00:03:28
Speaker
I just volunteered for the Halloween party. I just volunteered to be the art docent at my daughter's school. I used to be PTA president. Like, I am very present. But I also have good boundaries and I know that my business matters and that it's putting food on the table and that it's showing my kids what they deserve.

Final Thoughts on Overcoming Excuses

00:03:44
Speaker
So do not use time as an excuse. Instead of focusing on other people's businesses and pricing and instead of making excuses, educate yourself. Put your head down and do the work. Nobody's going to believe in you if you don't believe in yourself.
00:03:59
Speaker
You got this. I can't wait to see you succeed. It's time that you get out of your own way and that you focus on you and you focus on growth and you will find success.
