I've been ah photographer for 14 years. I have a very successful photography business every single year. And I want you to know that I don't think you need to be on every single social media platform out there.

You don't need to be on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and whatever. The list goes on and on. You don't. And here is what I think you should do instead of focusing on too many.

Strategic Focus on Select Platforms

So I've been told that because I don't utilize every platform that I'm missing marketing opportunities. I actually don't agree with that. I would rather do one or two things at 95% instead of doing five things at 30%.

So this goes with my social media presence. This is how I pick the social media platforms that I'm going to be on. I choose the social media platforms that I want to focus on, and I go really, really strategic and really, really potent there.

So pick one platform, start there, and do it really well. Start with the platform that you're already spending time on, a platform that you already enjoy. So if it is TikTok, if that's where you like to spend time, then focus your efforts there.

Or if you find yourself spending a lot of time on Instagram, focus your efforts there. It makes zero sense for you to start focusing on a platform, for example, like TikTok or YouTube, if you don't spend time there.

Building Audience Through Engagement

So build your audience on your play but favorite platform, excuse me, like Instagram, for example, with short form content. So Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Facebook, those are all places for short form content, meaning photos with a little caption, um you know, ah short videos, et cetera.

Grow that organically by truly connecting and serving your audience. Most platforms have hundreds of millions, if not billions of users. So your clients are anywhere. They're on any platform you want to be on.

You just have to be consistent and you have to connect with your audience there.

Personal Experiences with TikTok and Instagram

So I went on TikTok. I just want to give a funny real-time example. I went on TikTok because my team is a little younger than me and they're like, we got to get on TikTok.

It was really funny because I posted a video on TikTok that did amazing on Instagram and it got two views in like two weeks. And it's because I don't spend time there. It's because I'm not focusing my efforts there.

It would take me a lot of time to grow a TikTok following where instead I already have an Instagram platform that's engaged and growing.

Conclusion: Platform Focus and Personal Preferences

So instead, I'm just going to stay on Instagram. I'm going to stay in my lane and focus there.

I really want you to remember that you don't have to be on all the platforms. Pick one or two that are working really well for you that you actually enjoy and focus there. And I'm happy to report that when I went on TikTok, I didn't really enjoy it. I felt like it was too young for me. Maybe one day I'll change my mind.
