Introduction to Enhancing Photography Business

Hey there, empowered listeners. Welcome to my private podcast experience. And today I'm going to sort of steer in a direction that I don't always go on this audio podcast experience and because I know that I'm mostly speaking to photographers who are really trying to ramp up their photography business and make this photography business into something legitimate, profitable, and meaningful.
Becoming an Educator in Photography
00:00:25
Speaker
But there's something that I'm going to talk about just maybe once or twice over the next few months. And that is have you been considering stepping into the influential space and becoming an educator so i get asked a lot like really i'm not just you know being that instagrammer that says oh i get direct messages i actually get asked very regularly at least a few times a week how to handle the slow season during photography business, um you know, or during the the the year of owning a photography business.
Managing Slow Seasons as a Photographer
00:00:56
Speaker
How do you handle a slow season?
00:00:59
Speaker
Or how do you make enough money to make this into a full time gig? Now, there are lots of ways to do that. by being a photographer. In fact, I was able to quit my job as a NICU nurse when I was not really an educator yet, or at least not making money as an educator. So there's lots of ways to diversify your revenue streams. And that's definitely something that we talk about.
00:01:20
Speaker
in my level one mastermind because if you want this to be ah full-time business, you do have to treat it like one and have income coming in all year. But if you've been in business for a while, and there's no timeline, but if you've been in business a couple years, let's say, your business is making around $50,000 at a minimum a year, hopefully a little bit more consistently.
Scaling with Education in Photography
00:01:41
Speaker
and you are wanting to scale, meaning make more money, but not by taking more pictures, you may want to think about stepping into the influential space, meaning you might want to think about writing some sort of educational offer to share with our community in order to boost your income.
00:02:03
Speaker
So I remember being really curious about this and really wondering if this was something that I wanted to do. And my first six figure year again, I just want to reiterate this was when I was just doing photography related photography based income streams. And that was when I launched my school photography business.
Success Through Ebooks and Online Courses
00:02:23
Speaker
and But what really really really got things cooking for me and allowed me to scale at rocket speed and became multiple six-figure mini empire nearly seven figures is when I started teaching and so I'm gonna just give you some numbers here my first ebook made $10,000 in one weekend that was just a PDF that I wrote My first online online course made approximately $8,000 to $12,000 every time that I ran it.
00:02:57
Speaker
My first self-hosted online course made $25,000 in one month. And my education platform now makes well over $200,000 a year, and that is on top of my photography business that makes nearly $200,000 well.
00:03:13
Speaker
as well Now, my photography business, the income is coming down a little bit because I'm doing less shoots so that I can focus more on being an educator.
Transitioning to a Consultant Role
00:03:22
Speaker
I kind of feel like I'm stepping into that consultant role. I have the history and experience to really back that.
Creating New Income Streams Without Clients
00:03:31
Speaker
but I do still run a thriving photography business so I just want you to think about if you are ready to create impact in our industry if you are ready to share your creative gifts not just with your clients and the world from artist standpoint but with our industry with photographers who need your support so you can do this by selling presets ebooks online courses in-person workshops speaking at conferences coaching programs guest blogging getting published those are just some of the ways now a lot of people really feel like there's too many teachers they're not ready or don't have anything unique to offer to the world i've been doing this long enough to know that you have to definitely have the experience to back becoming an educator but that doesn't mean you have to have been in business or have a certain amount of years under your belt you just have to have the experience to back that
00:04:26
Speaker
now one thing that i think is really awesome about this option of revenue this option of making money is that there are a lot of photographers who want to make money want to make extra money for their family they're very talented as a hobbyist photographer but they don't want to take on clients this is an option you can teach other novice photographers other moms who are photographers ah your craft your skill you can teach about lighting you can teach about the artistry side of things make money without actually taking clients which i think is pretty cool So I have created a worksheet for you.
Worksheet for Aspiring Educators
00:04:58
Speaker
I'm going to include it here in ah the the notes or in you know the area where you download or listen to this episode so that you can work through that worksheet and really answer these questions and decide if this is something that you are interested in.
