So what I want to talk about today is a phenomenon that actually there is research about that I've seen exist in other industries is the fact that it is very common for mothers to start a new career, often a creative one, after they've given birth.

So just to give you a little bit of context with me and my business, my son will be 17 this year and I picked my camera up right after he was born And my daughter, who will be 14 this year, I started my business the year that she was born.

And then in 2014, when my now almost 10-year-old was born, was when I quit my job as a nurse to pursue photography full-time.

So with each child, it was like I birthed a new version of myself. And I know that this is a super common things. So I just think that it's it's kind of an interesting concept and i love that it is ah you know something that ah a common theme that I see in a lot of um of my students. So oh anyways, a Washington Post article was just published on this exact subject and it said that motherhood can really sometimes just create challenges at work, but for some it actually generates better opportunities.
Balancing Family Time and Career

And I think that this career change happens for a few reasons. For one, when you have a baby, you realize how much you value your time spent with your family. But for me, I think one of the things that I really realized is that I valued schedule freedom.

I still value schedule freedom so much. That's one of the main reasons I love being my own boss. I can be at any event for my family that I have to be at because I'm in total and complete control of my schedule.
Empowerment Through Motherhood and Creativity

Working in a traditional job rarely offers either of those things. It doesn't offer you more time with your family or schedule freedom. I also believe that when you have a baby, you are reborn in a way.

You wake up to a new level of strength and confidence after giving birth, or at least I certainly did. And when you become a mother, you also wake up to a new level of responsibility and purpose.

You just created a life. And with that, you realize that at your core, you are a creative being. You want to show your children, or at least this is a big motivation for me, you want to show your children what is possible for them and what is possible about their creativity and ability to create a business and life from that creativity.

Well, also, you want to be a present mother. And I think starting a creative career that you are in charge of allows for both of those things.
Advice and Encouragement for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Many photography passions and businesses are born right alongside a baby.

I think that that's kind of amazing. So I want you to, if you're listening to this right now and you're in the early stages of starting your business and this is you, you've just had a baby or you have a young toddler or something happened with your children and you're finding that correlation, I want you to listen to your intuition.
