Malted Minis - Go Brewing "New School Sour Berry"

The Malting Hour

This week Brandon and Tony bid farewell (probably) to Dry January with Go Brewing's "New School Sour Berry".

Beer description:
This isn’t your average sour—it’s a flavor revolution. Bursting with juicy, fruit-forward notes that are perfectly balanced by a zippy tang, it’s the ultimate mashup of sweet and tart. Imagine the boldness of ripe citrus colliding with the smooth sweetness of stone fruit, all tied together with a crisp, clean finish that’ll leave your taste buds begging for an encore.

Crafted as an ode to the creators—the new school who see blank walls as opportunities and rough sketches as blueprints for greatness—this beer is alive with flavor as vibrant as their work. It’s more than a drink; it’s a masterpiece in every sip.

Introduction to 'The Malting Hour'

00:00:23
Speaker
Welcome to the malted minis brought to you by the malting hour. I am one of your hosts. Tony go look joined always with Brandon winning journey. I am using my NPR voice tonight. I figured, Hey, let's, let's just

Plans Post-Dry January and Special Beers

00:00:37
Speaker
be cool. It's Monday everybody. It's the last ah full, is this the last Monday of January?
00:00:43
Speaker
Yes, it is. Yeah, this is it. And as much as I'd like to say this is our last and a episode, it's probably not unless Brandon and I decide to record next Monday. You never know. Hey, who knows what we're doing? We took last week off. Hey, dry January ends for me on Friday. So technically,
00:01:04
Speaker
Oh, fantastic. All right. Yeah. All right. Well, that's good. Then you know what? Sometimes this weekend we'll record something. We have a couple of special beers set to the side to record for when dry January is over. Indeed we do.

Super Bowl Chat: Chiefs vs Eagles

00:01:18
Speaker
Matthew is trying to bribe me with a beer for the Super Bowl so that he can keep coming back on the podcast. And I said, hey, man, you don't have to bribe me. And he goes, I'm trying to keep you drunk. And I said, that you need to do. So that's OK. Which, by the way, as everybody knows now, the Chiefs and the Eagles, we're going back two years to the 2023 Super Bowl. Chiefs and Eagles are now facing each other. I'm happy for your wife and her family.
00:01:46
Speaker
Yeah. but And again, and I think I've said this in the past, well, I really doesn't care. She, uh, I think she's happy for sure because her parents, I don't know, seem to be really into it. Her sister seems to be really into it. I think her sister's gone to a couple games and no, maybe one game. Um, so I just really wanted to see the bills play. Yeah. I love Josh Allen. I like the bills. I'd like to see the bills in the super bowl. That's the only reason why I'm bummed.
00:02:11
Speaker
Nothing against the Chiefs. I do feel like, um, you know, there was some coincidental things that happened throughout the season. I'm not saying that it's rigged. I'd hate to think that the NFL is rigged, but who knows there's bigger problems in the world. And that's why we bring you this podcast, which is for drinking beers and things like that.

Sour Beer Tasting: Blueberry & Strawberry

00:02:29
Speaker
And tonight is no different, except we are wrapping up our dry January Brandon. What are we drinking tonight?
00:02:37
Speaker
Uh, we are drinking. Even though, even though I bought it and get it. Go Bruins, uh, new school sour, uh, with blueberry and straw. So I chose this one because we have liked at least one, two or three go brewing. There we go. And a drinks um on our dry January episodes. And there was a couple of other non-alcoholic options I saw. I dude, I was this close to getting a twenty dollar and a whiskey that I was just going to like.
00:03:14
Speaker
of course like we like dude give me a mason jar or a water bottle and ah Let me pour some for you ah But I didn't do that. I was like, you know, what let's do this. I saw this instead. I chose this one over a tropical IPA that I saw from them because I just feel like sours are more fun and they're a little bit more approachable when I or they're Not approachable, but I feel like it's a good, almost easy. And I say easy because I feel like because you can sour something like it's tasting like a fruit soda almost when I come. So this is new, new school sour blueberry and strawberry. And right off the bat, I smell strawberry. And why I say that because I just did dehydrated strawberries recently.
00:03:56
Speaker
yeah Yeah, and I just that's the first thing I got blueberry I think I think for me is a very subtle scent like you'd have to have like massive amounts of like fresh, like, and then for me, I have to like crush them to actually like smell like full smell of strawberries. If I have like a blueberry muffin or yeah blueberry pancakes or what's the good that's been heated and like the, once the juice like starts to caramelize and things like are that, yeah you know, I think that's kind of brings out the flavor. I wonder if listeners prefer my NPR voice over my regular voice. I don't know. We need to take a fall.
00:04:41
Speaker
I think that's probably more realistic. They just hate us in general. Nobody cares. We don't want to hear you guys anymore. I keep doing this fucking show. I did bring up the description of this beer. So it's not your average beer. This isn't your average sour. It is a flavor revolution bursting with juicy fruit forward notes that are perfectly balanced by a zippy tang. It's the ultimate mashup of sweet and tart.
00:05:07
Speaker
Imagine the boldness of ripe citrus colliding with the smooth sweetness of stone fruit all tied together with a crisp, clean finish that'll leave your taste buds begging for an encore. Crafted as an ode to the creators, the new school who see blank walls as opportunities and rough sketches as blueprints for greatness, this beer is alive with flavor, as vibrant as their work. It's more than a drink. It's a masterpiece in every sip. How many times they say it's more than a drink?
00:05:36
Speaker
More than a drink. do to do Once. I thought it was at least three times. um um What do you think of this beer? um I do like the aroma. I do like the the sourness that I get right off the bat. um There is a metallic undertone or something close to that that I'm kind of getting.
00:06:05
Speaker
um
00:06:08
Speaker
If you guys can hear this in the background while Brandon and I are drinking this, I am also, I poured myself a little bourbon from the football game. Um, that's interesting that you're getting metallic. Yeah. I'm kind of pinpoint if that's what it actually is or if my mind, so I'm getting, money I'm getting.
00:06:29
Speaker
some strawberry, some blueberry and a slight, very slight tartness. So much so that I have a hard time wanting to classify this beer as a sour. Yeah, it is not. I've had athletic brewing has my favorite sour beer.
00:06:52
Speaker
um non-alcoholic. Yes, thank you. Non-alcoholic sour beer. And it is,

Approaches to Drinking & Non-Alcoholic Options

00:06:59
Speaker
well, athletic is all NA. And I can't think of, is it called Soul Power? ah something like Something along those lines, and it was very tart. and Very good. I loved it. I saved the last hand that I had. Ooh, I can't hear you typing. Soul Sour. Soul Sour, yes. It's very good.
00:07:21
Speaker
And maybe that's where I have like my, um what do you call that?
00:07:29
Speaker
when you hit when you Threshold. Thank you. Threshold or or or the bar. the bar yeah Maybe I shouldn't have had bourbon before this. That's the bar where I have as far as any sour goes.
00:07:41
Speaker
This is not sour to me. There's a nice tartness to it. It tastes really good. I would say this is more of a fruited ale, fruited NA ale. It tastes really good. Like I do enjoy it. I was a little, the aroma, and I'm smelling it out of the can. You're you're probably getting a better smell from the glass there, but I get like,
00:08:06
Speaker
dried straw, like it reminds, I mean, last weekend I dehydrated some strawberries for the first time. And this is like the aroma that I get from those strawberries when I'm eating those strawberries. But taking like another big sip, there is a, very nice. There's a tart.
00:08:33
Speaker
There's a tartness to it, but I would not say that this is sour. It's a tart. It's a tart, fruited and a beer.
00:08:45
Speaker
Yeah, I can see that. Um, that's funny. When I burped, did it go through? Did you hear it? Oh yeah. 100%. Oh, then it is not using my Yeti mic. That would make sense why my volume looks really low. you sound you I'll tell you this. You sound very fine. And when you were typing, it sounded very good. That's why you could hear it more than normal. yora your Your mic sounds fine, though. You do sound good. You sound absolutely fine. OK. Please move. He's moving it closer.
00:09:14
Speaker
Well, then I can feel like I can sit back where I normally do because I was trying to get closer to the mic like I i usually do. Anyway, i sound good when I was kind of swirling it, you know, I was kind of swirling it around in my mouth. That's when I was getting more of what I would probably classify as a sour, but I'm getting like, I would lean more of like a tart fruit, like, you know, and that that was in the description, tart fruit was in the description. So at If that's how you're doing it and then calling it a sour, then it's cheating. But, um, yeah, it's, um, and it's not bad. It's not bad. Um, and I don't, I'm not going to.
00:10:00
Speaker
I don't want to say anything negative about this. I just wouldn't call it a sour. I'd call it a tart, fruited and a beer. um And even as I'm like burping a little bit, it tastes like those dehydrated strawberries I was talking about um because it's good. And I feel like it's a really good option for an any beer. If you're looking for any beers, as we always try and push during dry January, because I mean, even.
00:10:27
Speaker
During the year, there could be times where, you know, you don't want to have a beer. And if there's something about like you want to go out and like have some drinks and stuff, there's I mean, we went out to revolution on Friday, ah me, Matthew, Chuck and Brandon. And Brandon, you got their super zero hop water from revolution. And you also had goes imperial go brewing's imperial IPA, which we've had on the show. And taking a sip from it,
00:10:56
Speaker
that night while I was drinking and then tasting yours. It reminded me of how good that actually was. like yeah that's a solid well It's Well, it's good to have that option. I mean, I've started to be better about when I'm out or hanging out with friends and having drinks to be like, OK, I've had enough. I'm OK. I know myself. I know my body. I know how I'm going to feel if I continue to drink. um Not even like the intoxication part, but the.
00:11:26
Speaker
How am I going to feel? And how does this benefit me? Like, yeah, drinking a bunch of light beer is one thing. And even when i I get to a point where I'm like, i I'm just it's I'm just drinking at this point. So why not just have a carbonated water or having an option like this in the refrigerator? It's like, oh, I'm still sitting around having a drink with everybody. It's just it's it's non-alcoholic. Yeah. Or less than point five percent ABV. Yeah.
00:11:55
Speaker
Yeah, and I mean, it's again, there's there have been some um beers that we are not alcoholic beers that we've had that have been okay. You know, but there's an instance like if I was put up putting up one of those versus like, some of the hop waters that we've had, like, I would probably choose the hop water. And for me, it comes down to like, you know, if we were spending the day doing a lot of drinking. And then and it's at the end, it's like, yeah, I'll take the water. um Because, i don't you know, because in my stupid head, I'm like, oh, I just drink, you know, how many 1000s of calories worth of beer.
00:12:34
Speaker
you know, drinking. es exactly so i thinkinging And then I'm like, I don't need to add any more out of it. I'll just drink the water, you know? um Well, and and we've we've become we've conditioned ourselves to do that phobab with revolution offering the super zero hot water. Yeah. That we drank. I think this year I drank more than before. I think I had like, yeah.
00:12:55
Speaker
three of them in the short amount of time that we were there, uh, and then had a logger. And then we, you know, we sampled through a whole bunch of barely aged beers to to talk about for the the show. Yeah. And I mean, like, but that's perfect because with that, they give you the full like 12 ounce can. And if you're going around just getting, you know, three or four ounce samples and then supplementing that with a couple of cans of hot water,
00:13:20
Speaker
Like, that is, I think, key to us not leaving there feeling like shit. Absolutely. And this year- And the Lager Lounge. Yeah, I mean, thank God for the Lager Lounge and us getting some delicious food while we're there as well. um But yeah, I think- Overall, the NA options have gotten much broader and wider and it's no longer just, oh, here's an NA beer and it tastes, you know, here's NA Heineken that you and I have both said that we don't dislike, but you and I are also not going out and buying NA Heineken during dry January. We yeah could easily just not drink. It's much easier. but
00:14:04
Speaker
I will say that the NA beers are getting better and better every year. It makes dry January much more obtainable for people who don't want to drink.
00:14:16
Speaker
Um, and also I don't think it's a terrible idea to have things like this in your beer fridge in general, like we were saying, like, Oh, I'm going to, I don't want to drink anymore, but I want something. And, you know, yes, you should probably drink water, but you should be drinking water throughout the entire night. But if you still want something like, Oh, I i wanted to like.
00:14:37
Speaker
emulate the effect that I'm like, you know, having a drink with my friends, you know, hot water is good. And some of these NA beers are fantastic. And I will say that this is the more I'm drinking it, the more I'm, I'm i'm really enjoying it. And I've got, you know, two more of these, we split the six pack.
00:14:52
Speaker
Um, I can see myself coming home from work and cracking this open and being like, Oh, good. You know, I've got a carbonated beverage of some sort, yeah whether it's carbonate. I just, I'm addicted to fizzy things.
00:15:09
Speaker
yeah That's why I don't drink regular soda. If I'm drinking anything, it's going to be a zero or a diet, uh, because I drink it so fast. Um, carbonated water. I have that in my refrigerator all the time. Flavored carbonated water, having something like this, which I think is like low calorie as well. It's a nice alternative to drinking a soda or not drinking a diet, uh, soda or, or just carbonated water, just kind of switching it up to be like, Oh, I'm having this nice fizzy drink.
00:15:40
Speaker
Yeah, it's funny because normally I would have put some carbonated water on tap, but I still have old fashioned left in there. So it sounds like I need to come over when dry January is over. Yeah, that's going to be my, that might be my first thing that I have to have ah an old fashioned. I would love to join you for that. if You're welcome anytime. When you're doing it, I'm coming over, baby. I was going to say so like,
00:16:08
Speaker
A lot of people forget, too, like just thinking that non-alcoholic beer is a fad or whatever. Non-alcoholic beer, and this is my perspective, and somebody could tell me if I'm completely wrong, but they literally, it is not for people that don't drink. It's not. It's for people that can't drink or can't have alcohol for whatever reason, um but like the taste of beer. like they you know they you know You know, maybe there's somebody that has always had an an alcohol and alcohol intolerance, um but they find the idea of hops and things like that interesting. So moving on to trying things like, you know, NA beers is definitely where it's at. And then there's the segment of people that may have had problems with alcohol and they've cut themselves off, you know, but they know themselves enough to where, like,
00:17:01
Speaker
this isn't going to be a gateway into something else. like It's, hey, I'm still hanging out with people. I'm enjoying this just as much as I would anything else. I also feel like I'm having a beer with friends. Yes. And then there's the you know the the people that are doing it for health reasons in general, like, hey, I'm cutting back on my alcohol. I want this non-alcoholic beer that's typically you know significantly less calories and obviously doesn't have the alcohol and things like that. so um i mean that's I feel like that's important to note.
00:17:27
Speaker
in like, especially this time of year two, because, you know, people shit on the, the, the n NA beer industry. I mean, not, I don't say people shit on it, but it's always like, Oh, I'm doing dry January, but All these people forget that like the NA business is there, and it's getting larger. So just because I'm choosing to do Dry January doesn't mean I'm not going to go and support places. like I went to Rev, and I bought stuff from Rev you know because I was there. And Rev doesn't have non-alcoholic offerings. They have guest offerings, and that's fine too. But they do have their hot water, which is ah theyre super zero, which is fantastic.
00:18:06
Speaker
um But, you know, just to say that, like, I don't know, ah this is a great way to supplement, like, you know, for people that enjoy having, you know, beer and they nest, you know, they can't, you know.
00:18:22
Speaker
Or they're choosing not to. Yeah, yeah. So kind of my point too is like, i yeah I was going to say, I've really been thinking, sorry, like stepping on each other, but I was going to say, yeah I've really been like kind of thinking about this too, because I've been trying, even before dry January, like November and December, I've been trying to literally limit my drinking during the week. But there are times like there could be Thursday night football or something like that, or Monday night football. And I'm like, Oh, you're going out and having drinks with your wife.
00:18:51
Speaker
Yeah, so I like the idea. Well, and then usually then that's why I'm like, yeah, fuck it, I'm going to have a drink. But I do like the fact that there's better things out there, like in the the stuff from Untitled Art that we we've had that has been fantastic. And, you know, the handful of things from gold Go Brewing that have been fantastic. And again, back to this beer, this isn't a bad beer by any means. um You kind of nailed it. I wouldn't necessarily classify it as a sour.
00:19:16
Speaker
and people who enjoy sours would probably, and like you're one of them, you you know, but people that enjoy sours, like regular sours with alcohol would have this and I probably would not be up their alley, I would think. Yeah, I wouldn't dis, i yeah, I agree with you and I wouldn't tell people not to try it. I think, um' I've already finished mine.
00:19:42
Speaker
I've already finished it in this 19 minutes that we've been recording. just about um Yeah. I like it. It's, it's enjoyable. It, I probably, you know, this is probably a shameful thing to say. I could easily finish a Coors Light in about 20 minutes. 12 ounce can't, it's just easy to drink, but also finishing something like this in 12 minutes or 19 minutes is, uh, shouldn't drink, shouldn't drink that goddamn bourbon.
00:20:09
Speaker
drinking, drinking this within 19 minutes tells me, Oh, it's something I can sit there and enjoy. Like to be honest, I might go and have another one after this to call it a night. like Yeah, that was really good. I wouldn't mind having one more before I go to bed because it's like, Oh, it's something fizzy and flavorful and it's hitting what some people might be looking for. I mean, any beers and you know, any beers and seltzers, whether it's, you know, the hop water or just regular, you know, run of the mill flavored seltzers, every time I come home from work,
00:20:48
Speaker
no matter what it's like, hot, cold, whatever. The first thing I do when I get home, I don't grab a beer. I grab some sort of like carbonated water that I have in my refrigerator because it is just like this reward for myself of like, ah, I'm home. I'm enjoying something fizzy and it tastes good and I'm going to relax for a little bit.

Reflecting on Drinking Habits & Supporting Local Breweries

00:21:10
Speaker
And then I decide on what I'm going to do for the rest of the night. You know, maybe it's something where I am going out. Maybe it's something where,
00:21:15
Speaker
I'm staying in and I'm going to make a cocktail or I'm not drinking at all. Um, it's funny not doing dry January this, this year. Um, I drank once this week, twice this week, Thursday and Friday I drank. And then yesterday I had a couple of drinks and then today I, you know, with football, we were, we were drinking some beers and, uh, eating some food and stuff. But, uh, you know, I unconsciously.
00:21:44
Speaker
consciously Didn't drink during the week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday went out and Friday was even like, I had a couple of beers at Rev and then went home. yeah You know what I mean? like It wasn't like, Oh, I'm drinking before I go to rev and then I'm going to rev and I'm going to drink all these beers. And when I go home, I'm going to drink some beers. I'm going to bed. Like I woke up early a whole weekend. It felt great. Yeah, felt absolutely great. And that's why I think like, okay, I've had my fill for the night. Having this, I think I'm going to have another one just to be like, Oh, that's, that's still, that's still hitting. I know what it is about. Like I love fizzy things. Like I said, that's why I stopped drinking sugary sodas, because I mean, I can.
00:22:24
Speaker
down a 12 ounce can probably in like five minutes. Like i I love the way cold, fizzy, flavorful things taste. So I agree. Something like something like this is is perfect. So would I call it a sour? No. Is it a tart fruit and a offering? Absolutely. I think it's delicious. And go brewing has once again knocked it out of the park. And I'm Uh, happy that you got the Imperial IPA from them on Friday at Rev because it was nice to like go back and revisit something that we really enjoyed last year to then have something from them again. Like I said, I almost got a tropical IPA from them.
00:23:05
Speaker
And I think, uh, I forget the name of the, um, you know, let me, I think I can pull it up right now while we're talking about this. It's a screenshot of what I was going to get earlier. Uh, best day brewing, the non-alcoholic craft beer. They have a West coast IPA, a Colsh and hazy IPA.
00:23:25
Speaker
Right now, Vinny is for a 12 pack, which would be what, three of each three, six, nine, 12, four of each math. um It's 18 bucks, which I think is a really good price for that, especially for an N.A. offering. So I would I do want to go in and I'm planning on grabbing that 12 pack ah for us to try, whether we do it during dry January or it's just another random recording. Then I think then that's what we'll we'll do. But You know, any beers are there for a reason. It's not the enemy. People doing dry January, not the enemy. Uh, Brandon and I, I think are living proof of that, having a beer podcast that he's doing dry January. I am not. I went to breweries, bought some beer. He went to a brewery had NA offerings. Like there's still. There's still ways to support local businesses during dry January. We're both very aware of.
00:24:23
Speaker
how tough it is for breweries during January. So definitely yeah go out and support everybody that you can. I remember that ah you know a lot of, ah at least in Chicago, ah I can't think of off the top of my head, local breweries that are not offering a guest NA option if they don't have their own NA option.
00:24:51
Speaker
yeah Or they have food. Go eat their food. Don't be a loser. They all have delicious food. That too. my And you got a week, you got a week left, less than a week as of the posting of this episode. Yeah. And then, you know, go back to out there and, and drink to your heart's content and keep all these places open because they're all awesome. I'm gonna get Brandon so wasted.
00:25:20
Speaker
We do have some fun beer, so that we have lined up in, uh, some fun things coming up for this year. So Brandon, anything else you want to say about this beer? Uh, no, I was going to ask you, uh, how many, because it is a new school, how many school buses would you rate this beer? Um, overall.
00:25:42
Speaker
I'm going to give this, uh, 3.9 school buses. If this were a legit sour with all the flavor that I'm getting, this probably would have been closer, like a 4.3, 4.5. Okay. How many, uh, school buses are you giving this? Actually, how many pieces of chalk for the chalkboard at the school are you giving this brand? Uh, I'm at like three, seven, five, three, eight, roughly. and um Um, I like it. I do wish it.
00:26:07
Speaker
Uh, was a little bit more sour. Um, I mean, a lot more sour and I wish the, the strawberry is very prominent. I wish it had more of like the berry flavor in it. yeah Um, but still a very well done, uh, great, great flavor. yeah Great, great flavor to it. It tastes great. And, uh, if anybody likes fruited beers, this one's for you. Yeah. I will definitely be enjoying the the last two of these. So.
00:26:33
Speaker
All right, everybody enjoy the rest of your week. We'll see you next week with, I think our first boozy episode of the year. We'll see. We'll see when Brandon and I can find time to record it Brandon. Love everybody. We'll see everybody
