Introduction to Malted Minis

00:00:23
Speaker
Welcome to the Malted Minis brought to you by the Malting Hour. I am one of your hosts, Tony Golick, joined always with... Brandon Winnington. Brandon, how's it going, buddy? How are you? Pretty good. You know, we're recording this ah Monday when it needs to be released, as we sometimes do. But, you know, sometimes that's how it goes. Rebels, baby. It's still out on a Monday, so it still counts.

Brandon's Calm Weekend

00:00:48
Speaker
how was ah How was your weekend, man?
00:00:52
Speaker
Weekend was good. Didn't do too much. Spent most of the time at home. um Went to the park for a little bit yesterday with Benjamin. Played some Minecraft, which seems to be like his thing he wants to do with me.
00:01:07
Speaker
so and Okay, let's let's play some Minecraft. That's the thing to do. Yeah. But yeah, don't know. That was pretty good. How about your weekend?

Kenosha Beer and Cheese Festival Experience

00:01:18
Speaker
ah Pretty good. I ended up ah going to Kenosha for the Kenosha Beer and Cheese Festival, which is a ah Boys and Girls Club sponsored thing or like ah like fundraiser.
00:01:33
Speaker
I think it's a lot like what it was for the Great Lakes Festival when used to have it. Okay. Yeah, it was ah it was interesting because it kind of felt like a ah neighborhood thing. Like everybody knew each other and it didn't feel much like a beer fest. Like anybody that sponsored, and I'm i'm not knocking the fest. It was just kind of different for me.
00:01:55
Speaker
But anybody that ah sponsored was, ah and says, I've run out of free disk space, a local backup of the data. Huh.
00:02:08
Speaker
I don't know if this is recording anymore. I mean, still showing recording on my end. All right. Fantastic. I will edit that out. um Yeah. It just kind of felt like a neighborhood, like school fundraiser.

Tasting New Glarus' Gyrator Doppelbock

00:02:22
Speaker
um Like it kind of felt like people were there just to drink, to drink. Like it was crowded at noon and by three 30, it was almost completely empty.
00:02:33
Speaker
Like yeah which was fine. I mean, and also there was like a lot of seltzers and like, hard teas and things like that, like spirit drinks. And it wasn't like a bunch of beers, but overall, like it was fun and it's nice to go up to Kenosha.
00:02:47
Speaker
was at the brat stop. Um, I stayed out there, hit up the Mars cheese castle where I purchased this beer, which is a beer I've never had from new glares before. And it is.
00:02:59
Speaker
it the same one I'm having? yeah Sorry. The gyrator doppel.
00:03:08
Speaker
Sorry. I should have led you into that a little bit better. ah Yeah. I've never had this before. Have you ever had this? I do not believe so, but this is tasty. Yeah. It's not bad. I'm a big fan of Doppelbox. As I've talked about many a times, uh,
00:03:24
Speaker
Darker lagers such as Box have gotten me into appreciating lagers altogether. And I'm not sure how often this comes out. I feel like this is something i would have... I don't know. Maybe I just didn't head up to Wisconsin when this is normally released because it looks like it was added to Beer Advocate in 2021. So i I definitely have not been...
00:03:50
Speaker
up to that area during the spring until this year. But it is listed as seasonal. So, yeah. And ah yeah, it's it's ah here. I'll read a little bit about it. It's a 7.3% ABV. says close to brew master. Dan carries heart. This Doppelbach journeys begins with Dan's rediscovery of a whole clone.
00:04:13
Speaker
Diamant hops grown at his own. urging in Haller to Germany. Over 10 years of his personal heritage, barely researched ah barley research resulted in Dan choosing the seed propagation of Czech barley, kilned as pilsner malt here in Wisconsin.
00:04:31
Speaker
He revealed in the challenge of double decoction brewing in his rescued 1962 copper brew house, re-homed to New Glarus in 1997. This strong Bock lagered 10 weeks in the cellar before resting in the bottle, six months for mature flavor perfection.
00:04:48
Speaker
Each journey begins with a single step.
00:04:53
Speaker
At least that's

Fondness for New Glarus Beers

00:04:54
Speaker
what it says beer advocate. It says in the bottle too. Oh, sick. I didn't bring the bottle with me. i just poured it in this glass. Yeah, it definitely says it on the bottle. um What are your thoughts?
00:05:05
Speaker
um You know, There are a few beers that actually I don't know if there's a beer that I don't like from New Glarus. And I may may have said that many a times. And this is definitely a delicious beer that I can't believe I haven't tried until right now.
00:05:21
Speaker
Like I said, I love box. Adopo Bach is fantastic. This is a great time to have it. It's got like a rich like brown amber color to it. It smells very roasty. and it's not like It's very caramelly in flavor without it being like super sweet. yeah and
00:05:39
Speaker
There's not a booziness to it, but you can definitely feel it when you're taking s sips from it. I agree. yeah That's one thing I was going to say. there's There is a like ah a rich caramel sweetness to it um that's not overpowering, but Yeah, in the back end, I'm like, i because I was looking at the bottle, I'm like, what is, I forget, they don't put the ABV on their bottles. And I was looking, I was like, what is this?
00:06:04
Speaker
And yeah, this it drinks, what was it, 7%? Something like that? Yes, 7.3. Wow. Yeah. I would not have expected that, but, you know. Yeah, no, not at all. And

Exploring Wisconsin's Beer Scene

00:06:16
Speaker
like some of the reviews on here, it's like a bright red brown browns cover, coffee colored, had less than one finger high, aromas moderate, roasted malt with a faint hint of dark fruit, which, you know, you come to expect that from a doppelbach. I mean, box, doppelbach, it's kind of like a nice way to end winter going to spring because my box are right around the corner as well. And we got like, ah you know, we're talking about pale ales and how much other pale ales.
00:06:44
Speaker
It's funny because today is very warm in Chicago. So it's kind I feel like it's kind of ironic that we're having a beer like this that I feel like is kind of it's appropriate. want to have where it's like maybe like 45, 50 degrees, but we're in the sixties today, baby. But yeah, it's, it's fantastic. It's really sweet.
00:06:59
Speaker
And I mean, i don't mean really sweet, but like sweet in the sense of something that like I find enjoyable. Yeah.
00:07:09
Speaker
Yeah, i was i was curious how this one was goingnna was going to turn out. I wasn't sure if I was going to be like into it. i mean, I'm into Bach. I like Bach and stuff. That's what was going to ask. I was going to Bach a style that you're normally into? Yeah, yeah. and It was just more like, was like, I don't know if I'm feeling a Bach today, but um this is fantastic. Again, like I'm in the same camp with you with there's โ€“ I don't think there's any new glare sphere that I've had that I was just like, no, that's not good.
00:07:41
Speaker
um Have we had โ€“ oh, sorry. Go ahead. was going to say they like they they're all just done super well. Yeah. um I want to say that the answer is yes, but have we had the Scream triple IPA or double IPA from New Glarus on the podcast?
00:07:59
Speaker
I don't know. I feel like that, I mean, if we have, it might've been early on, so it might be hard to search. Yeah. ah Like with previous episodes, but yeah that was the other thumbprint beer other than the 2024 barley wine which don't know if we both had one of us had on the podcast. So I went with this because it's, it's something that I'm not very familiar with.
00:08:26
Speaker
Yeah, no. And I agree. And I appreciate you grabbing it. Cause I, I think I had told you too, like, you're like, Oh, you want me to bring anything back? And I said, if it's something we haven't had do that. And I don't recall ever having this. It's possible that I may have, but yeah,
00:08:42
Speaker
Again, like, like, even when I saw the bottle, I was like, Oh, what is this? Um, yeah. Even when I was looking it up, I was like, I don't know how to pronounce it. Oh, it's gyrator. Uh, yeah, I don't, I don't also, I don't know why I didn't leave you two more. ah but I do have two more for you. I just dropped off the one. I was, I was tired when we were getting back. I'm like, I drop off a bottle right now.
00:09:03
Speaker
ah But yeah, I do have two more for you because I figured we'd just split this. so you Appreciate it. Yeah, man. Of course. Yeah, I would totally drink

Cheese and Beer Shopping Experience

00:09:10
Speaker
this again. look forward to it. Yeah, it's it's nice to know that this is an offering around this time.
00:09:17
Speaker
Like I said, you know, ah that fest I went to was pretty fun. One of the things I wanted to say was that ah they had homebrewers there, all from Wisconsin, um because you can't have the Illinois homebrewers up there anymore.
00:09:29
Speaker
And one of the homebrewers that i really enjoyed was a I think it was South Port Homebrew Club. They didn't have like ah didn't have a webpage or anything, but they had an orange creamsicle that was really, really good.
00:09:44
Speaker
And then another homebrew club ah had a they had another name, and they scratched it off, and then they called it a Chicago-style hot dog. o So I got ah got a pour from them.
00:09:56
Speaker
It tasted like a Chicago-style hot dog. So much that I had one sip, I'm like, yep, That's Chicago style hot dog. And then I had to dump it. ah Yeah. So, I mean, overall, like it was, it was a lot of fun and it's always great to go up to Wisconsin, especially just for like ah a weekend trip. And always love grabbing some new Glaris beers.
00:10:15
Speaker
I am mad at myself for not grabbing more Wisconsin Belgian red. Cause I have one left from last August, still in my fridge that I moved with. around Should've got more. Should've got some moon as well.
00:10:29
Speaker
but the the The red is like a staple. I always grab the red. Yeah. I almost grabbed some Moon Man, too. I grabbed too much cheese and meat. I had to cut myself off.
00:10:40
Speaker
yeah You know what? You got to have priorities. Sometimes beer is not the priority. three cheeses Three cheeses, three meats. That's what i ended up with. So I'm very excited for what I grabbed. but Fuck, Tony. Dude, it was expensive.
00:10:53
Speaker
I love the Cheese Castle, but we all know it's expensive. Yeah, that's why I think I'd to go to... What's that store? prefer to go to what's that store
00:11:04
Speaker
Woodvins. Woodvins, yes. But it's cash only unless you have like ah American Express and I didn't have cash on me. I think they take debit card too. think you can do debit. Fuck, seriously? i think so, yeah. I

Final Thoughts on Gyrator Doppelbock

00:11:16
Speaker
blew it! I had my debit card!
00:11:18
Speaker
but yeah, they I will say this. I did not grab the Doppelbach from the Cheese Castle. I went to a gas station where it was only like $10.99. Nice! That was well i did i When I was in the car ah leaving the cheese castle, was like, fuck, Brandon says once you get over the border, there's a gas station that has beer, but I don't know the name of the gas station.
00:11:42
Speaker
But how many um gyrations are you giving this one? who I'm going to go solid four. Four one, maybe. yeah from you but Yeah, I'm in that that low four area Yeah, I think I'm going to go with four on this one. It's very good.
00:12:00
Speaker
um the sweetness is nice, but... ah it's one of those beers that I could have. And I think that is a lot for like, I think that's very common with like doppel box or certain box that like maybe one or two and then you're done because of the sweetness. And I think that like this one for sure, I can have one and be like, that's it.
00:12:20
Speaker
Yeah. It's got a heavy, it's got a pretty hefty body to it too. So I do really enjoy like the, the caramel flavor yeah and like a little bit of roastiness. So it's it's very tasty. Yeah, but like you were you saying, like this I'm not saying it's a one and done, probably close to it.
00:12:36
Speaker
But um yeah, I mean, I feel like because of that caramel sweetness, it kind of amplifies the body a little bit more. it drinks a little heavier than Yeah, because it's like a medium body beer and that like sweetness kind of like, there's like a coating of my tongue a little bit.
00:12:55
Speaker
It sits a little heavy. Nobody can see what I'm doing, but I'm doing like a claw thing in front of my face. Sorry about that. Because he claws his tongue. ah Well, Brandon, I love buddy.
00:13:08
Speaker
Love you too, man. And we'll see everybody next week. Bye. a
