Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Chelsea brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm your host Matt Blagdon and today we're talking all things Southampton. We just got away from the Saints Valley and it's been a good day for us Blues fans hasn't it? It's 5-1 to Chelsea and I think every Chelsea fan is finally feeling We've got our Chelsea back. The Blues are really back in town because this was a real statement win I think in terms of Switch Net about and there was mixed opinions talking within the Chelsea fans about what was going to happen with this game because
00:00:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a midweek game during the busy Christmas period and these games they can really be a bit of a ah ah trip up within the season and even though it is against Southampton who are far and away at the bottom of the league you never know they could just pull something out of the bag.
00:01:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
But alas, nothing you know magic no magic tricks from Southampton on Wednesday against Chelsea. Rather, it was Chelsea bringing all the magic to to the game. To be honest, it probably should have been maybe 13, 14-1 maybe? Just because we had so many chances, didn't we? I mean, Chelsea, we ah ah now have scored 19 goals away from home, which is the most of any club away from home this season. And we also actually lead the goals since May, law this year, May 2024. We scored 45 goals. That's the most of any team in the league.
00:01:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we also recorded our highest xg in a game ever with 5.92 expected goals in a game and that all came from but us having 26 shots 13 on targets 10 big chances i mean the list just keeps going on doesn't it and i think you know why i really mentioned that it could have been like 14 one is that we did miss seven big chances throughout the game and that's partly due to Chelsea being brilliant but also I think it was amazing to see that as we sort of know that pequad Pep he's been brilliant for the league and he's changed so many different tactics most notably probably the whole inversion of a full back intimate field and using that methodology methodology
00:02:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
but you know Chelsea we've really adapted that under Marusca and we can play like that because we've got the players but Russell Martin also wants to play out from the back which is one of the things that Chelsea want to do and clearly it really shows that even though that you might want to play that way that doesn't mean that you can because there were plenty of times that Southampton were playing out from the back and they just gave it straight to us they couldn't play out and we've definitely capitalized on that with our second goal in Nkuku as Madaweike nipped the ball away from the defender played it into Nkuku and he just slots into an empty net very very easy for Nkuku and you know that's his first promo goal this season
00:03:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
he also got an assist which is brilliant to see and you know in kunku making the most of his you know first promo league start this season leading the line did start against man city but that was on the left wing and this today he was up top and he looked generally pretty good he got a solid you know 8.5 out of 10 with a golden assist and you know making the most of the 90 minutes that he had But that's just the second goal. We have so many other goals to to go through. And I think let's just start from the start, guys. Obviously, firstly, we've got Dassasi's goal from a corner. Kukarela playing slightly dark hearts with the keeper just to get in his way and leave it open you know for him to not get in the goalie to get in the way of Dassasi. And Dassasi just slots it in quite nicely.
00:04:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that came at a crucial time of about seven minutes, which is really, really crucial just because there was quite a lot of back and forth yeah within the game. It was quite end to end. And Chelsea, we really weren't settled. But getting that goal was great for the nerves and just great to you know quiet the home crowd because you know when in a position like Southampton, you're always going to get behind your team at every moment until you're you're dead and buried.
00:04:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like we did Kill him off and bury them indeed. So that was the society's goal. Obviously just mentioned it in kunku brilliant See him getting on the score sheets and you know making the most of his Opportunity and then it gets to three one with matter. Okay, just a beautiful, you know curling shots from the right-hand side. Manuweike was just driving at the Southampton defenders all game and getting involved in every way, shape and form. And, you know, sort of adding to his assist for Nkunku, you know, lovely stuff. And, you know, kind of what we you know needed from Manuweike, just because since his hat trick at Wolves, he has been quite quiet in the stats department in terms of goals and assists.
00:05:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's not to take away from his performances, but I think it was about time that he definitely contributed back with that. And, you know, he got player of the match, 8.7 out of 10, and really around the show, really was, you know, sort of just harrying Southampton down that right hand side of the pitch and just looked really, really comfortable. I think a massive masterstroke from Maresca, just in terms of.
00:05:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Switching around the team, particularly dropping Madawake against Villa on the weekend and then bringing him back in Southampton. It is really showing the strength and depth that we've got. And you know everyone mocking that at the start of the season, but look at us now, we're really thriving.
00:05:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
into the second half it was a bit cagey and obviously that came from us playing against 10 men because I think you know so this is where VR is actually brilliant isn't it guys because after so many fouls against Kukarela of players pulling his hair for so often within the punted box four corners Well, Stevens, you've been found out and you got sent off. You know, so for on replays, it looks quite tame. It looks like nothing really, a very slight pull, but.
00:06:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
it is classed as violent conduct and for that he's got to go and he's got a three-game ban and that really for Southampton is the last thing they need I mean sort of Russell Martin's probably going to be eight having a big word with him at the end of it and hopefully I think that's a bit of a message to all clubs when they do play Chelsea and come up against Kukarela to not try and you know any of that dark arts nonsense against us anymore but alas were playing against 10 men in the second half and we were still just peltering Southampton with chants after chants after chants. Madawake misses one with his right foot. Madawake puts it on a plate for Felix but he just he doesn't get it in on the right side of the post and even though we're playing against 10 men and we're complete control with the nerves sort of do sort of start to
00:07:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
build up a little bit, just because when you are on top, you've got to score. It doesn't matter how many how many goals you are ahead. When you're on top, you've got to score. And thankfully, Palmino delivered about 15 minutes before the end of the game. Beautiful play, just with Nkunku sprinting through, cutting back because he's getting closed down, and and actually shooting, with that being a bit of a tame shot because he's getting pushed down to the ground.
00:07:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Parma sprinting in and just tapping it in just before it rolls in and always laughing at Nkunku for that. And to be honest, us I love seeing that, that sort of internal competition, internal banter that they've got with one another. Nkunku might think that Cole stilling his goal, but he's definitely making sure. And I think that's the right thing to do. That's what every good striker, every good goal scorer would do. Make sure that it's in the back of the net. Don't need leave anything for chance.
00:08:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Cole Palmer, you know, sort of doing the brilliant, cold celebration once again. He is pretty, pretty remarkable. 15 goals and assists in 14 games this season. Only Mo Salah has more. And a fun Chelsea fact, the most goals and assists in a calendar year was Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank with 36.
00:08:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palmer's got a pretty strong record for 2024 and how many has he got in this calendar year? 36 so he's matching Jimmy Floyd Hasselbank for goals and assists and a calendar year at the moment and we've still got plenty more games the rest of this month for him to go above that. so Very exciting stuff with Palmer And then I think the best goal of all of them, you know, we say we save the best to last. And I think we are doing that here as well in Jaden Sancho getting his first goal in a Chelsea kit. And, you know, to add on to his three assists that he's got for us already, he now has a goal involvement every 82 minutes that he's playing. Chelsea fans.
00:09:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's just embrace that, enjoy that stats that we have taken Jade and Sancho from Manchester United for 20 million and maybe up to 25 million for a person delivering a goal or assist every 82 minutes.
00:09:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Isn't that just sweet, sweet news? It's like sweet nectar when we've had a pint after, you know, the weight of Covid at a pub. It is just such a joyful start because every United fan wanted him to fail. Every United fan wanted Chelsea to get the United Sancho.
00:10:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's clear we're not getting the United Sancho. We're getting our own Sancho, the Chelsea Sancho, the best kind of Sancho that there is around. And what can I say? It's an absolute delight. The way he took his goal, you know, in that sort of angle from with a especially shooting with the right foot, you don't necessarily so expect to see many wingers taking that shot and because so many wingers want to you know finesse the shot into the other corner.
00:10:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he's seen the opportunity, he's seen the space, and he's gone for it. And he's just said to the Southampton keeper, Gordon, then, save this. Gordon, if you're that good, save it. And sure enough, it goes right past him bulging into the back of the net. And Sancho, just like with Palmer and everyone else that scored today, he's got a beaming smile on his face. And it is just the most wonderful thing.
00:10:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course, we've said we've been gutted with the last couple of seasons about how Chelsea have played and just not having any chemistry or cohesion or anything like that under Potter, under Pochettino. But now it really looks like we've got our Chelsea back and Chelsea fans, we're excited for the games coming up. We really do believe that we can beat most teams now, you know, albeit maybe City and Liverpool, maybe even Arsenal. Those are the teams that we really are wary of.
00:11:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
other than that, I really feel like we've got this big, big confidence that we can really take it to the opponent and we can score many, many goals against them. So many good things to chat to and more coming after this break.
00:12:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
and continuing on from what all were...cronky-mikey. Sorry about that guys, technical difficulties once again. Occasionally it plays the ad twice, no idea why. I think Zenkastra are just quite desperate for some views and news. Anyway, we were just talking about Sancho and I just want to, ah you know, bear with me guys, just because this is sweet nectar to the ears for Chosufan once again.
00:12:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Since the end of December 2022, so almost two years ago, Mason Mount has played 29 games and has one goal or assist in that 29 games. It's almost 2025. That is grim reading if you're a United fan, but is wonderful reading if you're a Chelsea fan, because just to encapsulate this whole Sancho and Mount and all the proceedings that happened there, Man United paid 65 million for Mason Mount from Chelsea. And now Chelsea, we've taken Sancho for 20, albeit maybe 25 million with add-ons when that's all said and done for Sancho, okay? So that's a 40 million pound difference, everyone.
00:13:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
In other words, we swapped san Mount for Sancho plus 40 million with United. Now, I know we chose to have had a lot of criticism with big money fees for Sterling, for Enzo Fernandez and Caesado, but guys, I think just because we've made those signings, some of the terrible business by Man United has gone under the radar, and that's really highlighted with Mehtan Mount.
00:14:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it really does feel that we've got a real you know camaraderie and good squad amongst Chelsea right now, which is, you know as much as we want to be winning and we want to be winning trophies, I do think having that collective cohesion and just seeing the players smile and know that they're working as a team and that they see themselves as brothers,
00:14:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
It just brings such joy to your heart. It warms your heart. It really, really does. You know, other big stats. Enzo Fernandez, seventh assist of the season so far. In his last five games, he has eight goals or assists. Jacques Felix got an assist. Gusto got an assist. It's almost like everyone's just having a party. A fun stat as well from Chelsea against Southampton. Just how much we really dominated. Noni Manaweke had seven shots.
00:14:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Southampton had six shots, shots on target, Noni Madaweike 5, Southampton 4. So, you know, one player, as much as he was the player of the match, had more shots and more shots on target than the entire Southampton team.
00:15:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, I could go on. So many good things. I think let's just touch on the lineup quickly, guys. There was quite a few changes, which may maybe did raise an eyebrow. I think most Chelsea fans thought we were going to keep a similar solid 11, just because this is the Premier League game. It's not the Europa Conference, and we need to get the win.
00:15:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
there were a few more changes than expected, I think most notably with the goalkeeper and the centre back pairing. I think I expected Colwill to start alongside Tosin or Dassasi, but I didn't expect both Tosin and Dassasi to start.
00:15:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think let's just start on the defence, despite Dassasi scoring and us winning by four goals, I don't think we can really be satisfied with Dassasi and Tosin being a strong centre back pairing. After all, this is against the worst team in the league at the moment. so There's still massive question marks over both of those players, to be honest. And really for Southampton's goal that we conceded, it was just a series of unfortunate errors of them just kind of getting lucky breaks. Enzo Fernandez getting back, but getting megged. And then when the ball it comes into it, Tosin is just flat on his feet.
00:16:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
for Southampton just to get a tap-in with Arabou and Yeah, very disappointing to see I do have to say when they got that equalizer to make it one all I did get a little bit nervous and I was thinking oh gosh Is this gonna be a back and forth, you know end-to-end three all and then we get a last-minute winner but thankfully We had all Parma and Ko to sort that out in the and other part of the game. So yeah, still question marks on that. And also Gusto, despite getting an assist for the first 25 minutes, he was getting run ragged by Southampton and diving in to try and make some interceptions that did lead to some attacks.
00:17:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, you know, sort of, I think Maruska does need to get alongside him. Just, you know, say to him, like, look, Rhys James is injury prone. He's going to be out for a while. We really need you to be. I'll go to right back to to step into that, because as much as playing potato right back against fellow was a master stroke, we can't keep asking him to do that because that isn't his main position.
00:17:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Jorgensen I was really surprised he got some minutes here but you know from Endo Moroska it's definitely a master stroke again because Jorgensen made a crucial crucial save in the second half when we were 3-1 up earlier in the second half. Southampton you know get through have a great shot from near the the Pentisport But your concern is equal to it and that is a really crucial save for us to you know Keep the momentum on our side because if Southampton score that then it shifts to them They could then go on and try and get another and then make it three all and then you know all hell broke breaks loose and You know defensively we are still quite frail attackingly attacking wise, you know We are so we are so blessed and we are so fortunate to have so many attacking options But defensively, you know, there's still a lot of work there and because Reese James because for fauna Do you seem to be injury-prone and you know back for a month and then out for a month? We really may need to go into the market to sort of shore up some With with with another player in that position
00:18:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Jorgensen, yep, still in the first half as well, crucially in the first half earlier on. Southampton did get a shot straight on target. It almost deemed to be certain for a goal, but Jorgensen got a strong save in, held onto the ball, and it remained 1-1. So yeah, Jorgensen, I think, you know, what he displayed there is that he's saying to Maruska, I'm here.
00:18:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, sort of you can rely on me to put in a shift, to put in a performance. And, you know, I think that's exactly what we need. We need him to put in a strong performance to to show to Robert Sanchez, like, look, you really need to get your passing in together. You really can't be making sloppy decisions. Otherwise you got Jurgensen knocking at the door and he will take your place. Right. so We'll be back after this break.
00:19:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome back. Oh, it's Abil again. Apologies for that, everyone. I don't know what's going on with Zencaster. Anyway, Chelsea are now up to second in the table. We've now moved above Arsenal because we've scored more goals than them, and we've now got plus 16 compared to their plus 14 goal difference. We are on the same points of 28, and Man City, they beat Nottingham Forest, so they're just behind us on 26.
00:20:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Liverpool, they dropped points, they got an amazing 3-1 draw against Newcastle, so they're now on 35 points. And we're now only 7 points behind them, I say only, that's still 7 points, that is still a lot of points for Liverpool to drop because they are in such impeccable, impeccable form.
00:20:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
But, you know, our Chelsea in a title race, I'm very confident that we're not. We're in the perfect position to be in and around second, so that if we do have a drop off, we're still hopefully be in the top four, barring, you know, Brighton going on a superb run. And there is now starting to be a bit of daylight between the top four and the rest of the teams, barring Brighton, who are in fifth.
00:20:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
and because now Nottingham Forest there are four points away from Man City and fourth and there is just that breathing space now it was looking very congested in the top half of the of the table but now there is some daylight between all the teams and I do think that Chelsea, all we want is top four this season. You know, if we get third, if we get second, amazing. But I am not really not expecting any title challenge at some point, just because maybe a bit, you know, relay from our 13-14 season under Jose. We're, you know, so of we're just a young horse or a bit of a pony.
00:21:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
we we need to You know keep getting trained up and as I just mentioned, you know We really need to work on our defensive attributes and you know whether Sanchez really is the keeper for us to to take us to to those trophies to the title to even Europa Conference final and Even in the FA Cup, you know sort of could we win that this season? I'm really interested to know what you think guys like do you think we can actually win a trophy because ultimately we've just got the feel-good factor back and i think that is the most important thing after the dreadful two-year dreary that we've had to go go through that is the most important thing but you know we potentially really could win a trophy this season it going to be the league i really doubt it i think it would take a lot for Liverpool to
00:22:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
to to slip up that much pardon the pun we um um and Arsenal and City they're both stronger than us just tactically and I think you know sort of with their mindset and their experience just because remember guys we are the you know sort of the we have the youngest average age squad in in the league so So there will be moments where we do make mistakes, but I am loving how everyone just gets Enzo Mariska's system and can kind of input and part play and just come in at any time and make it work. And speaking of Mariska,
00:22:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
I do think, you know, sort of we finally got a manager that we can get behind. He just is so straight talking and he's not afraid to tinker with the team. And he really does think about how we're going to set up and how we're going to win the game. And he's realistic. He's not, you know, sort of like Marino that would always try and blame something else and and distract from his players performances to to try and protect them. He is just very straight talking. And I think reporters really see that.
00:23:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that is why everyone has a lot more respect for him and why the players you know are willing to know be on the bench or start and just know that their time is going to come. I really doubt there's going to be any sulking within the team that we're going to have any of the problems that you know United had with Sancho or anything like that. so And that comes down to the manager, ultimately.
00:23:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Speaking of which, our wonderful co-host Jake, also known as Jolly Jake, he was at the game this evening and so this was sung after the full-time whistle.
00:24:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Wonderful stuff, isn't it? so You know, sort of just to be amongst the fans and just, I don't remember. any other manager getting a chart like that so soon into their managerial career, really with Chelsea, maybe with Mourinho, but it was totally different under him and under Maruska, you know, there was something that is really galvanizing here and we have a lot of hope ahead and we can just hope that it continues. And next up, it spurs. Anyway, guys, we're out of time. Thank you so much for listening and we'll see you on the next one.
