Introduction and Game Preview

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everybody and welcome to the daily Chelsea podcast ah just myself today But of course keep up with us with all our hosts who will be here this week ah And as much as we'll have a lot of comment content coming this week Gonna be a bit of a tough one for Chelsea fans obviously and what we're doing today is just a quick rundown of the city game We'll have a very full match review out tomorrow um but Oh, this was a tough one, wasn't it,

Chelsea vs. City: Performance Overview

00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chelsea fans? This was, considering how we started, considering how we started that game, that was incredibly, incredibly tough. So yeah, that's what we'll be doing today. We'll go over the city game. We'll go over the actual game itself. um And of course we'll we touch on the talking points. and Most people can guess what the talking points were from that game, obviously.
00:01:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, a bit of a quick episode today

Lineup Analysis and Player Impact

00:01:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we'll start off with the lineups. ah So obviously the lineups were quite interesting in terms of how we set up ah the couple of new players in City's team, um which benefited us and they're definitely also disadvantaged us.
00:01:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
and In terms of Chelsea, obviously we started with Sanchez in goal. We'll talk about that in a moment. Rhys James started again which was fantastic to see. Shalabar, Cole Will and Kukarenna made up the rest of the fence. We then also had Fernandez and Moise Cassado as sort of the double pivot but it It didn't fully work like that in the game, although I think maybe it was supposed to. And then Nonny Sancho Palma as the attacking free behind Nicholas Jackson.

Chelsea's Missed Opportunities

00:01:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Of course, Nicholas Jackson did get an assist in this game, Nonny Badawake got a goal, but I don't think there was too much to talk about in terms of our attacking output.
00:01:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
and let's Let's start with with the goal then, because you know typically with Chelsea, you know you can't always start with with the goal being one of the very best things. But um the new sense back for City, someone we were apparently also looking at, Kucinov, he obviously made. quite a big mistake. its what A couple of mistakes really, it was it was it was not the best game for him. um Of course he you know sort of tried to head the ball in a challenge with Jackson and then repositioned himself and completely lost that and then had the decision to try and head it back to the keeper even though he he must have been aware that Nicholas Jackson was was on his tail.
00:02:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um it was It was very weird that he didn't just clear the ball out. However, and we took advantage of that and Nonny got the goal in the end. And I think that points, when City was so shaken, especially when one of their defenders was so shaken, that is when Chelsea should have gone in for the, we we we should have gone for the neck.

Critique of Chelsea's Strategy

00:03:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
We should have been, we should have been trying to get two, three, four nil up insides, not inside that first half, but really inside the first 20 minutes, we should have been absolutely hammering them. um Because every time the ball went back inside those first 10 minutes to Ivakutinov or even Akanji, it looked so shaky.
00:03:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
and the way they were holding their line just wasn't working in the slightest. And and the fact that we we didn't go for that go you know go for their neck at that point and try and absolutely you know destroy the game,
00:03:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
um it's the that's what led us to lose. That's what led us to lose in the end. and I don't think from that point it was we were heading for a draw even. The fact that we weren't really going in at them meant that we just look just Just that we won we won' we weren't able to, we weren't we were not a team who were going there to win even, I don't think. what What the worst thing is, is it reminded me a little bit of that performance that we had under Antonio Conte a few years ago. And I think that's what's gonna irk Chelsea fans so much after that game. There are some other things that obviously will annoy Chelsea fans, you know, even like Holt Palmer talking to Pep Guardiola, but it,
00:04:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
that performance where we it almost felt like we were sitting back. And we and you know it's not it's not as if we were sitting back the entire game. We weren't just stuck in a half. We were trying to attack, but we had no we had no velocity to our team. like And that's that's that's what happened used to happen you know a few months ago. We were we we got the ball.

Team Confidence and Motivation Issues

00:04:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we ripped teams wide open. like we We just ripped them wide open. They happened for quite a few games. It's when we had our best run um and it's and we don't really seem to be doing that anymore. I don't know if that's down to a particular player. I don't know if that's down to... I don't know if it's it's maybe because the manager was saying, oh, we're not title contenders, even though we were firmly up there. you know it's it's um it this's something has happened with our motives to win these games and we are playing different because of it. And I think that comes probably directly from the manager, um but then he can only do so much. And I think obviously the next talking point we need to to

Robert Sanchez: Performance Criticism

00:05:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
we need to go onto is Robert Sanchez. um So we're going to have a very, very quick break and then we'll be back to discuss the whole Robert Sanchez situation.

And we are back on the Daily Chelsea podcast. Yes, sorry for a ad break at you so quickly, um but we are doing a bit of a short episode today. But of course, stay tuned to the Daily Chelsea because we have a ton of content coming out this week as we as we come off the back of this city game and we head into the West Ham game, um who at time of recording, I think, are losing 1-0 at this point, which maybe means they probably want a little bit of revenge against us. Let's see. um But back to the city game.
00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chelsea were doing okay. I wouldn't say we were in control but in terms of that game um we definitely ah fell off a bit and I think a lot of this comes down to confidence and As much as I can say, oh we sat back and we weren't playing with the game We weren't playing with the velocity that Chelsea should have been When you have a goalkeeper like Robert Sanchez playing behind you. When when that is your for your first offen to your first offense to keep any ball out of the net is the goalkeeper, no matter what. That that that is your first offense. If you do not have confidence in that player, then
00:07:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
You are literally falling apart from the start. You are falling apart from the bottom of your team upwards, even if you read it as a lineup, you are falling apart from the start. And it is just the one situation which has played Chelsea for so, so long.
00:07:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
and You know, we had Thibaut Courtois. Even some fans didn't like Thibaut Courtois. I think, you know, towards the end, we all sort of knew that he would be leaving um Chelsea at some point. I don't think he ever really had his heart with us, or as much as he, you know, celebrated with us. um And then we had Mendy, who was better, not better than Courtois, but obviously one of our better keepers over the last few years. and But this is still an issue we've not sorted out. it's its It has to be,
00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's weird because if you if you look back at previous episodes of the podcast, I'm very in favor of getting someone like Garnaccio. I think he's a good player. He's someone who will nurture, but how are we doing that and not signing a keeper at the same time? It not even first, just at the same time. How is the, how have we not got a goalkeeper who is of Chelsea quality? Because it there is no one, there is not one person in the club who thinks that Robert Sanchez has the quality of, has the quality.
00:08:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
to be Chelsea's number one goalkeeper. There is not a chance anyone thinks that. He may have qualities, he may have qualities that make him... a better keeper for us. For example, we seem to think he's very good with his feet on the ball, very good at passing and such.

Sanchez's Errors and Comparisons

00:08:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
He is decent on the ball with his feet. He's not too bad when the ball is at his feet. His passing, if that is the reason we're keeping him in the team, he still needs to go. In fact, the person who lost possession most yesterday was Robert Sanchez, the goalkeeper, none of our outfield players. The goalkeeper lost the ball most in our game yesterday.
00:09:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
and it it's it just can't happen we can't we cannot expect to be we we can't expect to be pushing for the title 100 we can't expect to be top four with a keeper like this we can't expect it we may still make it we may still make it but we cannot expect top four with that man in there and this i've i've tried to back him as much as possible because i think you know i you You try to be a bit positive about these things and you're like, yeah, he does have to you know those qualities. and you know Even when it comes to like actual just just shot stopping, he he does have decent quick reactions. um It's just any time he needs to make an actual decision when a ball isn't being shot at him.
00:09:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
he seems to he seems to fumble it and that that's that's not chelsea that is not chelsea and especially with the amount of fans we have now who grew up with our generation of players of lampard terry petter check it that's not chelsea at all that's just not chelsea at all war sanchez reminds me of a bit and i'm not sure and i don't mean to insult ed dahoy here he reminds me a bit of ed dahoy he's he he's a bit Flaley, he's a bit all over the place. He is a decent shot stopper, but you know, at the Hoyt at the time, yeah, we we were sort of a top 14, but I think, you know, we we were dealing with what we have. this is not This is not dealing with what we have. We went out and signed this man for 30 million pounds. He was not, we and
00:10:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not as if we were trying to pull him away from someone. This wasn't some sort of long transfer battle to try and get this well this keeper who was off to yeah every club was after. That wasn't the case at all. We paid 30 million for Brighton's second, nearly third keeper. he was He was actually losing his place on the bench a few times. And that is what we've got. It doesn't matter about the price of what we've paid, but we bought Brighton's second or third keeper and he is now our main keeper.
00:10:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it is showing, it is showing, it is showing so much. we you got Especially the Harlan goal, the Harlan goal, I just don't, he also just doesn't help himself. Like, why are you that far out of your net? The amount of screenshots I've seen on social media the last few days where he's either, you know, he's, the ball's here and he's like over here, like, what? What what is going through his head? that's That's what I don't understand. And whatever it was that was going through his his head,
00:11:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
sort of proves to everyone, it's certainly us, that he is not good enough for us. He may not be good enough for another Premier League team. Yeshar, another one of our hosts was making the point the other day that like Aaron Ramsdale is at the worst team in the league and he has better statistics. Better statistics, yes they probably face more shots on goal etc etc but
00:11:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
What are we doing? what What are we doing as Chelsea? yeah And the other thing is, is that we have Jorgensen on the bench. Jorgensen is, you know, i don't know um I don't know enough about him. I don't think any Chelsea fan, ah unless, you you know, they were proper look, they probably knew about the transfer or something, knows too much about Jorgensen. But what I have seen, I think provides a bit of confidence. I think the back four having Jorgensen behind them, rather than Sanchez, will play a lot more confidently.
00:12:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
and It's one of the reasons I think, for example, Disasi, you know, I don't think he's one of, I don't think he's a good centre-pack for us, but a lot of the situations where he was making mistakes started with Robert Sanchez. There are three goals you can go back and look at um where it's sort of put down to a Disasi mistake and I think that that probably shows that but I'm not even covering all of the Disasi mistakes here, but This is where, you know, they they start with Sanchez. They start with Sanchez playing the ball up to a player. Maybe he shouldn't because he's already being closed down or, you know, just hit it upwards to someone because the that's the the the main thing I didn't understand in the city game. Just got on a quick point is he would constantly give the ball to the player who was closing down, who's being closed down. Always a fullback or center back. He would give the ball to a player who is being closed down. There is someone running towards him at any point.
00:13:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
why does he not just look up and think oh he's running towards that player so there must be another player up there or their line is going to be very high so if i hit it upfield with a bit of momentum and target it slightly we'll get pushed up the pitch he just doesn't do these things he doesn't do these things And I don't think it's an instruction from Oresco. I don't think Oresco is saying, no, take an extra you know don't take your extra couple of seconds that you've got on the ball and just lump it to someone who's but going to lose the ball anyway. I don't think that's the instruction. I think the instruction the base the most basic instruction of this is get a ball to a player in blue. That is it. Get ah get the ball to a player in blue who is not but who is not being closed down within the next three seconds.
00:13:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's all we need to fix. And there were times where our buildup would have been so much better if we had if we had just done that, or we do it not we, if Sanchez had just done that. It's incredibly, incredibly frustrating. And then there was a brief last night that Sanchez may now get dropped. If he does now get dropped, then he needs to stay dropped.
00:14:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
because we've seen enough now. And it's either, you know, yes so it's it's either you continue with him and you truly back him, which I don't want to happen, but for Maresca's sake, he needs to think about that. Or you drop him and you drop him permanently. Because once you drop him, you are fully admitting there is not, there is, he is not the best keeper at the club. Because because

Impact on Team's Mentality

00:14:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
that is the reason you've dropped him.
00:14:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
If that happens, we have then he needs to stay dropped and not come back into the Chelsea game. Cup tournaments? Sure. he's got he's got a fair He's got a fair bit of Premier League experience. He's got a fair bit of experience as a keeper now. However, I don't like throwing Sanchez in for random games because I think it makes his mistakes worse.
00:14:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And also he's been making all these mistakes and he he's probably been told that he's not fighting for a place in this team. That's essentially what we're asking for is sitting press conferences as well, which is what's annoying so many fans. He's backing him to the Hills and not criticizing him for things he's done. When we know, we know that any decent football manager is criticizing at that point.
00:15:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's tough and it makes it either feel like it's coming from further up than him or it makes it feel like that Maresco may be a bit of an idiot, which he's not. We are well aware he's not. Um, yeah. And that's, that's me on, the that's me on Sanchez. In my opinion, he has to be dropped. He has to be dropped now. And this has to end now. That was three perfect examples of why Robert Sanchez should not be on our team in one of our most important games of the season. If he is not dropped out of after of that, if he's not dropped after this, I actually won't blame Eresca because I will be fairly certain it's not him who is keeping him in the team. I think it's someone from above saying they want to recoup that 30 million because we messed up a bit here. And there is no other way to look at it. You can there is you cannot say we're still backing Sanchez for his football ability and such. There's just no way to look at it like that.
00:16:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
But anyway, we're going to have a very quick ad break and then we'll come to a little summary of the game. Of course, we'll have a more detailed match review out this week, but we just wanted to as quickly run over the big events of the game. ah But yeah, very quick break and we'll be back shortly.

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello ladies and gentlemen, yes, we are back after that quick break. We're just doing a quick discussion on the Chelsea First City game with a match full match review to come later this week, um as there is a a lot to discuss from that. And obviously we've just gone over the Robert Sanchez scenario conundrum, whatever you want to call it. and But you know, it was you know it was it wasn't just necessarily Sanchez that probably cost us this game. I think what Sanchez did in this game was cost us our mentality. I think whatever hope we had of pushing ourselves through getting a point or, you know, possibly three points, you know, i I think that went out the window after the, after the first goal. Um, and you there's a little clip of Enzo Fernandez as he turns away after, after the Harland and ah goal. And he's just, he's, he's like this facepalm, you know, he's, he's so disappointed. And, you know, I think that summarized how every Chelsea fan felt at that point, but also
00:18:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
it sort of shows what confidence they have in him. like are there ah the issue The other issue with with Sanchez is, are the players happy? you know To go 1-0 up at City um and get um be essentially given the goal is very, very, you know we got lucky and in that incident. Obviously, I think we were showing a little bit of quality early on, but we got lucky in that incident.
00:18:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
And you don't get top four, you know, by being lucky. Some people can say you can win the league by being lucky at certain points, but you know, you have to be a legal winning team. We're not going to get top four through luck. We had to show ourselves yesterday and we didn't really, um,
00:18:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
The other part, there's a couple of other players I want to quickly talk about before we go. and I think one of the first ones is Levee Colwell, and i as much as, you know, I like him as a player, I'm starting to worry that maybe he's not our top centre back. He's good, he's definitely got the mentality for it, but i was there was a lot of worrying scenarios in that game yesterday, I think, for Colwell, and it makes me start to wonder if he is maybe not developing as well as he should be considering he is sort of the these store he's he's if but if you ask a Chelsea fan who's probably going to be a send-a-back on the team sheet if he's if he's available, it's Colwell. That's hopefully turning a little bit more into Trevor Shaliver as well. but
00:19:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
um he He worried me quite a lot yesterday. His positioning was poor. um He lost a couple of one-on-ones. He lost a couple of battles, you know just like shareholder battles and stuff like that. It wasn't, again, I think so much of what has happened the last few weeks. And the reason we were doing so well at the start is because we had gained a lot of confidence. And I think that has been completely ripped away from us for for several reasons. the The main reason obviously being Sanchez, but there were so many reasons that this will be stripped away from us. Cole Palmer is not performing, although
00:20:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's the player I want to talk about next, to be honest, because I don't think Karl Palmer is fit right now. He does not look fit in the slightest. Like, yeah, he's sprinting, he's running, he's getting involved, but...
00:20:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
he's he's so He's so distant from the energy he had throughout a game um a few months ago. And you know there's there's certainly reasons for this. you know he Apparently, you know he started that game last week um against wolves, even though Nebraska had sedatives unlikely to start. That was a bit weird.
00:20:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And then, you know, you've got to think about Karl Palmer. You know, he he went with England in the summer. He came

Palmer's Post-Match Interaction with Guardiola

00:20:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
back. He played basically every single game um because we we rely too much upon him. But you can't rely upon a player who's not 100 percent there because, you know, people are starting to talk about Karl Palmer stock now as well.
00:20:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And quickly, I just want to talk about the optics of what Cole Palmer did at the end of the game. ah Now, Pep Guardiola was obviously having a chat with his former player. You know, we understand we snap we understand all this bit. I think, you know, Gary never brought it up and said, oh, why is he talking to people at the end? Because he was there for 20 years. He was in Manchester, specifically Manchester City for 20 years of his life. The first 20 years of his life.
00:21:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Of course, after only being away for a year and a half, he's going to catch up with some of those people. you know he yeah um like The longest chatting he had was with Phil Foden, obviously. and But he was, you know at the end, talking to Pep Guardiola for a minute or two, smiling and chatting. and Just for his sake and for how our fan base is as a whole, we have he needs to sort of realize what the optics are of that, why it's an issue to to have that after a 3-1 loss away at one of our biggest rivals. And they are one of our biggest rivals. um you know It was only four years ago that we beat them in the Champions League final. Although we're not be really matching too much in the league recently, they are still one of our biggest rivals. and
00:22:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's the way that looks, the just the way it looks to Chelsea fans, especially Chelsea fans watching on the TV, there were Chelsea fans who had gone up from London to Manchester, ah you know, probably getting the last train back that had to go up and look and, you know, Kyle Palmer's not walking over to the fans, he's talking to Pep Guardiola, they eventually did, but It you've got you you need to understand how it looks to people have to have to understand how it looks because otherwise the media gets on top of you and you know It's it's one of the biggest talking point that the other big talking point from yesterday besides Robert Sanchez is Cole Palmer talking to his former manager at the end Which I think is quite stupid Gary Neville has made it out to be a much bigger thing than what it is But you can't
00:22:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't give them the ammunition

Chelsea vs. West Ham: Preview and Expectations

00:22:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
because they will use it. They will use it. And it's going to make this week just a little bit tougher as well on potentially Cole Palmer, most definitely Enzema Reska. And the fans are starting to get a bit fed up again. The, you know, the next game that we have is a London Derby and it is one of the biggest London Derbys that we have is against West Ham. We have definitely to and f from with them over the years, you know, since the Lampard days.
00:23:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they are going to be well up for that. They're going to be well up for that. um And you know possibly that they will be coming into that needing a win or very much needed well needing a win to push themselves up the table.
00:23:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have to be aware of that and we we can't we cannot go into that game with no confidence. We have to go into that game, not only expecting to win it, we have to go into that game expecting to destroy West Ham. We have to go into that game expecting to destroy West Ham. There is too much around it. Gray and Potter coming back, that all this sorts. There's too much around it for us to not walk into that game and absolutely smash them. We have to, we have to show what we are in the moment. We have to show, or not what we are, we have to show what we can do. We have to.
00:23:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
and it'll be tough. But you know and over the next week, we're going to hopefully see signs that we'll be getting back there. I think the first thing hopefully will be that Robert Sanchez is dropped. so we We really, really have to hope that. and Guys, thank you so much for listening today. It's been a fantastic podcast. um Not a fantastic result to talk about, but hey-ho, it's Chelsea, and we move on. We will be here with you throughout the week. We'll have a longer match review coming out, discussing a lot more detail about this game within the next day or so.
00:24:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Plus, we will be talking throughout the week. um You know, we have Wild Card Wednesday coming up. We have our forecast Friday for for West Ham as well, but we are here every single day. So please follow ah Global Sports Podcast Network. More specifically, follow Daily Chelsea as well. um It's been fantastic to talk with you all today, and I will see you very, very soon. See you.
