We are coming to you straight after the 2-2 home draw against Ipswich, a really poor game, a really poor first half in which Chelsea found themselves 2-0 down and, whilst there was a second-half resurgence, that’s it – that’s Chelsea’s Champions League hopes over in my opinion. You’re listening to Martin and in today’s podcast we reflect on a really frustrating afternoon and what this means for the remainder of the season. Do we go all-in on the Conference League? Who has been better, Enzo Maresca or Mauricio Pochettino? Are we trending in the right direction? That’s all coming up on the Daily Chelsea podcast, as part of the Global Sports Podcast Network

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everyone, welcome to the Daily Chelsea podcast. We're coming to you straight after the 2-2 home draw against Ipswich. A really poor game, a really poor first half actually in which Chelsea found themselves 2-0 down and whilst there was a ah second half resurgence, that's it, that's it in my opinion, that's Chelsea's Champions League hopes over.
00:00:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
You're listening to Martin and in today's podcast we reflect on a really frustrating afternoon and and what this means for the remainder of the season. In short, I think we go all in on the Conference League as to need Nottingham Forest, Man City, Aston Villa, Newcastle to all slip up in some way.
00:00:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
it is a ah very, very tall order. um That's all coming up on the Daily Chelsea podcast as part of the Global Sports Podcast Network.

Ipswich's Early Lead and Chelsea's Response

00:01:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Chelsea 2, Ipswich 2 on this Sunday afternoon. as i said, really a game of two halves. Ipswich went 2-0 ahead. Goals by Julio Nciso and Johnson and in the first half.
00:01:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really saw the Chelsea fans booing off the team as we went into the break. That clearly sparked a reaction because 20 seconds into the second half... um Mark Kukurea really put it put on the pressure on the last Ipswich defender.
00:02:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it went down as a known goal in the end, but ah his pressure meant Chelsea clawed one back early in the second half. Jadon Sancho then scored a wonderful goal, it must be said, actually, with about 10 minutes to play.
00:02:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
um a good Enzo Moresca substitution there. as he replaced Maduweke late on in the game. um But 2-2 is how it finished. Chelsea did knock and knock as the game went into stoppage time.
00:02:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it absolutely is two points dropped more than more than one point gained. And you can't, frankly, be dropping points to frankly, already relegated Ipswich.
00:02:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
And what's worse, if Chelsea didn't claw it back... And Ipswich had won, then they would have done the double on us this season. and And how many other clubs have they done the double on this season?
00:02:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
None. Chelsea would have been the first one, would have been the only one. um And so whilst a point mathematically is better, it certainly doesn't do Chelsea any favours.

Chelsea's Performance and Corner Conversion Issues

00:03:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's an interesting game because in theory, all all the stats went in Chelsea's favour. um You know, 74% possession would tell you it was a really dominant game, although it didn't feel like it at all. But 34 shots...
00:03:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
nine on target. I must say as well, the Ipswich goalkeeper did play very, very well and pulled out some fantastic, fantastic stops, especially towards the end.
00:03:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Chelsea had 15 corners as well, and that is something that I wanted to pick up on in this podcast. It's very much that we seem to waste them.
00:03:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And, you know, to Jadon Sancho's credit, I think on the 11th corner in this match was where actually he scored his goal as it was a short corner. um And then he curled one in from the edge of the box.
00:04:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
But to to go 15 corners and convert one, and actually there's a there's a bigger stat as well of Chelsea this season and and a sort of our utilisation of corners. And this stat probably is about a month or two old old now. But,
00:04:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
but a month ago it was um chelsea had 130 plus corners um this season so far again sale by a month old so it'll be even more than that um now and i think only about three to five of them have been goals or um led to something meaningful which is one of the worst sort of conversions in the Premier League of all the Premier League sides this ah season. So there's an element there of of Chelsea sort of wasting set pieces, wasting corners.
00:04:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, we're thinking back to sort of the the era or and the days of Chelsea having substantial height. You know, every every corner meant something because you had a, you know, either Aditya Drogba,
00:05:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Frank Lampard or a John Terry or a Branislav Ivanovic who would, or an Alex, et cetera, who would, who would get on to the end of it. But there definitely is an element now of sort of, um,
00:05:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chelsea wasting corners and to have 15 and really not do much with it. And again, it's no surprise. We don't have too much height. um And that's why a lot of corners are sort of played short. And then it's very, very easy to to press Chelsea. And then all of a sudden you've wasted a corner and it's sort of been you've been pushed further and further back onto Chelsea.
00:05:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
onto the pitch. um But that is definitely one area which which Chelsea wasted um this season and really is one of the, you know, probably one of the reasons why it's gone wrong of late is it is that we are so predictable.
00:05:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, sometimes when you can't score from open play, it does need to be a corner or a set piece. And and if you if you don't have that sort of in your locker, then you know and and and opponents can can sort of work you out in open play, then it really does mean you don't have too much of of ah of a plan B.

Chelsea's Remaining Tough Schedule

00:06:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I was looking also at the stats of whether we are sort of on track or not to better last season's tally.
00:06:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And again, there's a few games left left to go as we record this. We've played 32, there's six matches to go and we're on 54 points.
00:06:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And four more wins of the six games would give us a higher points tally than last season.
00:06:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So mathematically, absolutely, we are still on track to have a better match ah mathematical season, if you like, in the Premier League than last season.
00:07:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
The big question, of course, is of the six matches left, can Chelsea actually get four more wins? And we'll talk later on in this podcast of you know of who's left and what's left. um And I'm sure most of you already know it doesn't look great. And whether we can get four more wins from ah from the remaining fixtures remains to be seen. so In that sense, mathematically, we are, um let's say, let's say if we can't better it, then we're sort of on par with with last season.
00:07:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
um i think also one of the the big problems and and stumbling blocks is who's going to grab that game by the scruff of the neck when, you know, when the opponents worked us out or when ah when we're sort of deep in a match, haven't worked out any ideas of how to break down a side.
00:07:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
who is going to sort of be the leader in that sense.

Focus on Conference League over Premier League?

00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And there was a little bit of fight towards the end. You could see sort of Endo Fernandes had a couple of good shots, which the Ipswich goalkeeper did very well to save.
00:08:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Cole Palmer as well. um So there's there's definitely some fights, but... not the sort of um not the fight that has led to anything and not immense passion um of sort of of yesteryear. So think the Premier League, and again, we'll talk more about about not just our upcoming fixtures and what's left for us, but what's left for some of our immediate opponents as well. Because as things stand, Chelsea are in fifth, um which would be enough for the Champions League going into next year. But...
00:08:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, we're only fifth by goal difference because Aston Villa are on exactly the same points as us and um arguably with ah with an easier run in. And then Newcastle, who are in seventh, actually have two games in hand on us, so they'll overtake. So it is a very, very tough, um not just run in for Chelsea, but...
00:09:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah not not just an absolute run-in for Chelsea, but also a relative run-in when you compare it to the neighbouring sides who you are up against, who actually, to have them all sort of lose pace and drop out at exactly the same time would be would be quite a tall order.
00:09:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Which leads really, I think, to the conclusion of today's podcast, which is, well, not the conclusion of the podcast, but the main message of the podcast, which I think we have to go all in on the Conference League.
00:09:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think the Premier League, um for all those reasons I've just said, And also just the the uninspiring confidence really from 2-2 Ipswich draw, you know, and again, we're recording this straight after the results, so we haven't seen the that the wider post-match reaction from, you know, media outlets.
00:09:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I reckon we would you know our viewers would be very similar to to other Chelsea um ah fans' opinions. is that If you can't even beat Ipswich at your home, then you know what' in terms of what's left, and let's actually go through it now, you know if you you can't even beat Ipswich at your home, what hope do you have for Fulham away, an Everton at home, a Liverpool at home, a Newcastle away, Manchester United at home, and a Nottingham Forest away? so That is the remaining Premier League fixtures.
00:10:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
As I say, a tough set. If you look at home um the home fixtures, to have home fixtures or your final four, three home fixtures being Everton, Liverpool and united Manchester United.
00:10:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Granted, Manchester United aren't having the best season themselves. Liverpool potentially might have the the Premier League wrapped up. Everton are on a resurgence, but to have those three

Competitors' Fixtures and Chelsea's Path

00:10:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
sides as your final three home games isn't isn't the easiest. And then to have your away games being Fulham, who are eighth, Newcastle away, and Nottingham Forest away,
00:11:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle and Nottingham Forest being the two sides that we're actually in competition for for the Champions League, which, you know, maybe that would mean that the Chelsea players have more sort of fight, knowing they are essentially real six-pointers.
00:11:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Maybe, but if you can't even do the business at home against Ipswich, it wouldn't be sort of... It would be the most optimistic of Chelsea fans to think that you could get any and points out of that. And as I say, when you then fold in...
00:11:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
who our rivals are playing for their remaining fixtures. So if we load up, for example, Manchester City's remaining fixtures in the Premier League, they've got um they've got Everton and Villa as well.
00:11:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But then they definitely have some, you know, quote unquote, easier ones. They've got Southampton, Wolves Bournemouth, which you would think that they which ah would get some comfortable points from.
00:12:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Nottingham Forest, who are having a sort of poor run of form, but again, they're Premier League fixtures. Until the end of the season, you've got Spurs.
00:12:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
birds Brentford, Palace, Leicester, West Ham. um And again, you would think that they would get some comfortable points from them.
00:12:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Aston Villa, depending on how their Champions League midweek goes, if they get knocked out of that, then and obviously the the Premier League is there. um ah They're still in the fa Cup, of course, but the Premier League is back to becoming a very, very big focus.
00:12:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they've got, whilst they've got Newcastle and Man City, ah for the rest of April, for for May, they have Fulham, Bournemouth, Tottenham, Manchester United. So a bit of an easier run in, as I say, Newcastle have two games in hand. So it is it is going to be hard um for for Chelsea in that context, which really, ah think, means that We have to get all in on the Conference League, which isn't necessarily the worst outcome.
00:13:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, it's a competition that we haven't won before. Would that mean we can say we won it all? um It would also mean that we get next year's Europa League, which, as I say, we're we're probably, you know, if we're, um and unless we're super optimistic, we're probably going to miss out on the Champions League.
00:13:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
in which case then you get the Europa League anyway in the league. um So to get it via the Conference League or via being you know sixth or seventh, I don't think makes too much difference. But one, you you have a title to your name and the other one you don't.
00:13:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So if it's if we're ultimately playing for Europa League and getting it via the Conference League method makes sense to me. um But just given how...
00:14:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
as I say, how um how uninspired that 2-2 draw was. very much think that we need to go all in on on the Conference League. um That's the end of part one of this podcast.
00:14:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
In part two, we'll discuss a little bit more about whether Chelsea are going in the right direction, a little bit more on Enzo Maresca versus Maurizio Pochettino. And as I say, look ah look more closely at who we have left to play for the rest of the season.

Managerial Change: Enzo Moresca's Impact

00:15:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome back to the second part of the Daily Chelsea podcast, a small advert break there by one of our partners, Bionique. um And in this part, a quick part, we just wanted to look a bit more at um this season versus last season, Enzo Moresca versus Maurizio Pochettino.
00:15:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Are we going in in the right direction? i think the Enzo Moresca versus Maurizio Pochettino one... um ah we'll We'll split fans. I think Maurizio Pochettino's sacking at the end of last season, I felt was very 50-50. There's definitely a section of fans who, you know, on the one hand were saying that we were definitely having to pick up in form ah towards the end of last season. Let's build on that momentum and keep him for a second year. Yeah.
00:16:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
On the other hand, there was definitely also some fans who were looking at the whole season as a whole last season, um not really thinking the style of play or the progress was good enough in spite of a very, very good sort of end of season rally, which, you know, you could you could argue was was some of the clubs that we played were, you know, already on the beach.
00:16:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And so it was really split, I think, with... with Maurizio Pochettino firing. And then even more split, I think, when Enzo Maresca was announced as the new manager, think,
00:16:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think There were some who either, you know, had studied Enzim Reska well, liked his sort of ideology, liked how Lester played, liked him being a disciple of Pep Guardiola, and really thought that we could build on something and and sort of got on board from the, let's say, academic and and technical point of view.
00:17:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
But then rightly, there was the other half who was looking a bit more practically and not academically and theoretically, um saying that he hasn't proven anything. His CV really is Leicester in the championship. How does that mean that he can um he can handle as big a job as as Chelsea, bearing in mind that you know previous managers such as Graham Potter couldn't handle that sort of sort of intense spotlight, if you like, or struggled in it.
00:17:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um We're sort of nearing the end, bearing in mind, you know, Maurizio Pochettino had really one and only season at the club. Enzo Mresk is nearing the end of his of his first season um at the club. And there's nothing to suggest at all that, you know, the the the leadership are not happy with with how things are. And let's not forget the Club World Cup sort of in June really makes this a double season in in effect. There isn't really a break anymore because as soon as the Premier League finishes, think there's then about two weeks before the Club World Cup and then you you play the Club World Cup for a month and then there's about two weeks before the ah next Premier League season starts. So
00:18:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very much the the noises seem to be that Chelsea thought of this as a double season anyway, in which case Enzo Mreska looks like he has a second season um at the helm at Chelsea. But if we just take one season for one season, it's diff it's really difficult to compare, as I said at the start this podcast, mathematically.
00:18:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Four more wins of Enzo Mreska's six remaining Premier League fixtures this season. um And he would have a higher points tally in the league than Pochettino.
00:18:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
You could, for those who are more mathematically minded, deem that as therefore progress.
00:19:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm personally a little bit split on that. i think it's i think it's for straight I think you can't compare like for like because Pochettino ended well, whereas Maresca started well.

Squad Stability Under Maresca

00:19:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's always quite... um quite hard to Hard to judge because did Pochettino end well? Because, you know, he he took he took six months to to to work out the team and then finally worked out the team um and then delivered performances. All really, you know, were players or were opponent teams of already on the beach, as I said, towards the end of last season. and Really tough to tell.
00:19:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
um i think what works, you know, if if this question of this set part of the podcast is Maresca versus Potch, I think what works in Potch's favour is he had a much more unsettled squad last season.
00:19:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Obviously, it was still much newer in the sort of Todd Bowley, Clearlake, um... regime and so ah you know there was still lots of player movement and transfer activity and so it does make sense that poch ended well rather than started well because there was a lot of movement there was always a lot of talk about chelsea having too many players in the squad how to keep everyone happy even from the graham potter days so In that sense, it's ah it's a small tick for Pochettino because morein um Enzo Maresca really can't use that excuse too much. you know this is This is a fairly, fairly settled squad now this season. and
00:20:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
If we look at the majority of his starting lineups, unless he wants to intentionally shake things up, which you know he certainly has done um to much fans' ire, but um i assuming he he doesn and so of doesn't want to shake things up of his own accord,
00:20:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Often the Chelsea starting 11 writes itself. you know Well, certainly that midfield and attacking line. Most starting lineups that we read, the midfield is Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandes.
00:21:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
And the attack is some combination, in whichever order they play, but some combination of Cole Palmer, Pedro Neto, Noni Maduweke and Nicholas Jackson.
00:21:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
And maybe you could debate Noni Maduweke versus Jadon Sancho, etc, etc. But on the whole, the midfield and the attack... right themselves in terms of the starting lineup, as does the goalkeeper in the sense that we've stuck with Robert Sanchez.
00:21:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then occasionally the defense, you know, switches around, um ah certainly sort of the center back pairing and the right back between, um you know, Marlo Gusto, Rhys James, um Levi Colwell seems to have really asserted himself a slot in in the center back pairing, but then it's sort of dependent on Fafana's fitness, Tosin,
00:21:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chalabar as well etc et cetera e etc so the defence is a little bit more um changeable but more often than not I reckon you ask the average Chelsea fan for you know starting 11 prediction for most games and eight of 11 of them will be will be fairly nailed on um whereas you couldn't really say that for Potch because there's so much still in the air so Maresca really can't use the excuse too much of of you know figuring it out because think his starting XI really is um is has has been written for him.
00:22:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's then a case of him getting the best out of them, which... it doesn't seem like he has too much, which probably, again, won't work in his favour. Again, I think there's no question of him staying on a next season because of this Club World Cup, certainly in the middle. But it doesn't bode super well that in a fairly settled squad now, um he hasn't been able to make them click.
00:22:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And where he did make them click, you know, which was very much... Christmas and before Christmas... you know Chelsea's form after Boxing Day has been has been very, very poor. Indeed, the the reverse fixture of this Ipswich game at Portman Road was on New Year's Eve, and that was that was the loss.
00:23:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
um You could argue Maresca's excellent start was sort of a little bit of either new manager syndrome, of a new season bounce, or just you know the continuation or the leftover of of the Pochettino end of season season.

Chelsea's Cup Performances Under Maresca

00:23:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
a sort of rally. So it's really tough. I think the other thing that crucially works in Pochettino's favour, just as we close out this part two of this podcast, um, is he had very good cup runs and that always inspires the Chelsea fan because, you know, there was an effort last season, and there was an FA cup semifinal.
00:23:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then we got to the, the Carabao cup final, um, and lost that. So, so a runners up, um, this season we've been much worse on the leagues ah sorry on the on the cups which doesn't help the the sort of mediocrity of the league um uh sort of in any wider context in both of the fa cup and the carabao cup this season we've been knocked out in the fourth round so very very early um early exits and okay we are doing very well in the conference league but
00:24:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know, most Chelsea fans and non-Chelsea fans would have expected Chelsea to to wrap that up quite comfortably. um We still have to do it. um you can only You can only play what's in front of you, so we still have to do it. But that was very much dismissed as as essentially, you know, Chelsea already having one hand on the trophy. But the fact that, you know, we sort of ah middling in the in the league and on par with last season in the league, showing no progress, and the Cups actually we've gone backwards,
00:24:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, to my question of Maresca versus Pochettino, It doesn't look good necessarily on Maresca or indeed on the ownership who made the decision.
00:25:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And in the next and final part of this podcast, I want to talk a little bit more about that ownership and Todd Bodies, who doesn't say a lot, but um some of his recent words at a recent conference that he appeared at. But before that, um a quick note from one of our sponsors.
00:25:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:25:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome back to the Daily Chelsea podcast. um it's the It's the third and final segment of

Ownership Perspective on Chelsea's Progress

00:26:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
today's podcast. And in the last few minutes, I really just want to break down whether we think we're going in the right direction.
00:26:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And in the middle section, um but I spoke at length about that in terms of Enzim Resca versus Pochettino. So from the manager perspective, but really from a from a boardroom perspective as well, are we going in the right direction?
00:26:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
um There's been a lot of sort of talk on Todd Boverley over the last well, since he arrived, really, but certainly over the last few weeks, really in connection with um with with Vivid Seats.
00:26:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that wasn't where I wanted to take the next couple of minutes, but obviously that is a huge headline on him as well. What I wanted to focus on was, given Todd Bowley and the Chelsea leadership don't really...
00:26:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
talk too much um on on sort of their investment in Chelsea, how they see things going. It was quite eye-opening to pick apart some of the words he did say at ah I think, a Bloomberg conference a few weeks ago and how he saw um how he saw the the the project working.
00:27:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
And two really sort of, um the headlines that that caught my attention. One, he played down the rift between Todbert himself and Bed-Alec Bali, i like barley but it you did get the sense that this sort of divisive point, whether they decide to continue or go their separate ways, will be on the stadium.

Stadium Expansion Plans

00:27:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
um You know, it sounds like as clubs expand, there's very much this focus on making the stadium more than just, you know, home to 19 games every year, making it into a wider arena for people to go to, proper campus, you know, maybe have some Other sports um inside Stamford Bridge as well. And I don't think most fans would necessarily disagree with that.
00:28:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
um There's obviously bigger considerations of the Chelsea pitch owners and and where we can move to if we can move anywhere or how we expand. um That was one sort of notable headline for those who missed it was that that seemed to be the stumbling block.
00:28:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um The other thing I think was really interesting was, and I quote, this was Todd Bowley a couple of weeks ago, um when he was asked whether they're going in the right direction. And it was, his answer was, we're just trying to execute a plan and we recognise things aren't linear.
00:28:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we're trending in the right direction. The trend is moving in the right

Is Chelsea Truly Progressing?

00:28:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
direction. And that's the thing that really matters. Now, this was obviously a few weeks ago. um So maybe he'll say different things now.
00:28:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But just a food for th thought, you know, for for myself and Chelsea fans listening to this. Do we think we are trending in the right direction? Yeah.
00:29:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's one of those where you have to set at the end of the season. um It depends whether you take quite a binary approach in terms of points in the league table or whether you look at more at performance and training pitch and ethos and culture and sort of those sorts of untangible intangible elements.
