Hello everybody and welcome to the daily Chelsea podcast. It is me, Josh Jake, today doing a little solo run. And we're doing a bit of a quicker episode today just to quickly cover off Tactics Tuesday. um And for Wild Card Wednesday today, we're just gonna go through the recent Chelsea news things we've been hearing the last couple of days and a bit of recent football news as a well, because of course there's been a managerial change um and a couple of bits more as well. So lots to talk about today.

I thought it would be a good place to start in terms of Enzo Mareska's tactics. So what I find quite interesting over the last few games is of course that Chelsea have been struggling in an attacking sense. And I think one of the obviously one of the key reasons for that is Nicholas Jackson has started to subtract a little bit. um He was finishing a lot more chances and I think you know the Ipswich game was quite evident of Nicholas Jackson being a bit out of form and he has been scoring a lot of our goals. and What else I find quite interesting about Chelsea at the moment in terms of our attack is we've not had sort of a consistent wing, with sort of a consistent a couple of wingers that have played every game so far. And I think what was interesting at the start of the season was that

ah attack people were keeping their attacking places based on the fact they were outscoring each other or out assisting each other. um And now it seems to be that we're just trying to fix the problem of not scoring goals. um And and that's that's starting to wear on us a little bit, especially I think where we're bringing in players who were, who've only played, you know, conference league football or League Cup football, for example. And now they're now, so you know, being called upon, you know, in in pretty big moments in Premier League games, really, you know, they're either coming on the subs or they're giving starts.

um and And these are, you know, although they are sort of lower down Premier League teams, they are still Premier League teams. um And it's quite different in terms of the level of opponent they've been facing throughout the season. And I think, you know, especially for the attackers, you know, I think you can see that in the fact that We had been quite free scoring in the conference league with players who are not necessarily, ah who have not necessarily been doing so in in the Premier League or in the bigger competitions. um And and and that's that's part of our issue at the moment. And

of course, we're now, you know, starting to concede goals in moments in games where the in in the in there are quite a few games at the start of the season where we had these sort of pivotal moments and were able to take control in the game and even score one or two more goals.

now those sort of pivotal moments are falling the other way. um And that's down to the tactics. And and so if we're talking about you know the reason these the reason our attack is not as good you know as it as it as it previously was, I would like to probably single out you know I think one or two players. and We've already spoken about Nicholas Jackson. Obviously, I think Nicholas Jackson has has had an obvious downturn in form. um He sort of reverted a bit back to what he was last season, which he's a bit of a space investigator. He was able to pull defenders with him, you know, and that allowed other attacking players to make runs. um Most recently, I think, I think the the the thing with when Nicholas Jackson is not scoring is it's not as if he's not affecting the game. If he's not scoring, that is never the case of Nicholas Jackson. I think

that's why he has quite a lot of backers. um But when Nicholas Jackson is not scoring I think he does open play up a bit more and that allows players like Cole Palmer to score. I think it's no shock that as Nicholas Jackson's goals have started to drop a bit more that Cole Palmer's goals have started to go up. um And I think the other player I want to look at is Pedro Netto. Now it is interesting with we've took that right wing position at the moment, I mean we saw it in the Palace game, you know, Madawake did come on, he didn't have too much of an effect, um however there wasn't exactly a lot of time to, but when it comes to Neto and Madawake, what I think Maruska likes in terms of his wingers is he likes one on one side, who is a bit more of a dribbler, someone who can pull players towards him. And then the other side, I think we have a bit more of a direct winger, um which typically seems to be Neto or Madawake.

and but what's happened recently in games is that no one is really being direct and this is the same sort of thing with gusto as well i think is why you know some fans have said that gusto's had a bit of a downturn in form is he's not really taking anyone directly and therefore we're no longer beating players When we're not beating players, our play starts to break down because with a lot of with with possession football in general, you have to be able to beat at least one player to be able to beat a defence. It's essentially you know something you have to do unless you're whipping in a very good cross or something like oh you know or you get a set piece or something like that, which is you know the sort of team the Arsenal turn into because they weren't able to rely upon strikers for goals.

and we're not exactly We don't exactly do that. We don't fire in a lot of crosses, although we were doing that a bit more in the Ipswich and Crystal Palace games, um comparatively to the games before. um What we need to realise is if we're not taking on taken on players directly, and when we're playing possession football, it allows a lot of lot it allows teams to basically contain themselves, build up a very good block.

when When we're low on confidence anyway, beating a low block when we've got not got players who are directly beating players on a regular bla and a regular basis, um it just sort of means yeah it completely stunts all of our attacks. And what happens in what's happened in most of our games is we've been quite open to a counter-attack because where teams have had successful low blocks against us, it means that more defenders come forward. ah And we essentially, you know, have have been done on the counter. I think, you know, even the laps chances against us all came from him receiving the ball about, you know, a third away, two thirds all the way down the pitch and then taking the ball forward um and drawing fouls because players are on the back of him rather at the front. And we have to we have to start to recognize this and start to,

play our attacking football in a different way. We may need to even be a bit more of a counter-attacking team for a while you know if we to get our confidence back up. um The Morecambe game is going to be very, very important for Chelsea's confidence and Hopefully we can, i'm I'm hoping we don't actually have too many changes in that lineup because I think some players in our team would do well to have a bit of confidence before heading back into our Premier League games. And just to quickly cover off that topic, you know, ah we are facing an injury to a defender who had a very good relationship with goal and at the, you know, at the start of the season, um losing that sort of call plus Lavia as well has obviously just affected us in terms of the way our team builds up.

um as well as defensively, we're we're conceding goals. you know I feel like it for a team that's being spoken about as title contenders, we shouldn't have conceded the penalty against Ipswich, we shouldn't have conceded against Palace really, we were on top of that game. um Even the Brentford game, thinking back a few weeks ago, you know that was a game that we nearly we nearly messed up you know it's it's and that was because Brentford came on quite late in the game. We have to we we have to we have to change as as you know tactically as well as I think I think a couple of players you know maybe a couple of signings would be good but even maybe a couple of you know a returning player like we were discussing on uh daily Chelsea on Monday we were discussing Scheleba coming back um

I think definitely a couple more players. ah yeah the The thing, the one thing about Shanna but just quickly is that he's he's a utility player as well. So he can shore up quite a few positions for us. um Maybe Maresco just assessed that he didn't have the quality. or um But you know, Chelsea, we have so we have to change tactically and we I think there needs to be a couple of personal changes as well in terms of what that starting 11 looks like. um um But we've got also a couple of games coming up where we can have players fighting for those places, you know show what you've got against these teams and you know you may be playing these Premier League games.

uh after after leaving us essentially he he's picked up you know another Premier League job we don't really know if he was holding up something specific um but he's also got quite a good squad of players there at West Ham they are definitely there's there's quite a few good attacking players and I think defensive really they're also quite good you know then ah you know you speak about players like Procetto and stuff like that you know West Ham are a very good team and I think it's probably a very good appointment if they allow him the time to build and get to know the squad ah because that's challenging mid-season and I think we definitely felt the effects of that um especially with Graham Potter. Our football definitely improved you know as we as we got into more time at Graham Potter I just think the squad was too big too much for a mess for him to handle and someone specific someone who has very specific coaching methods such as Graham Potter um but for that West Ham squad it might work

So, and I imagine Kieran did really always, you know, I imagine he he was, imagine he would be taking possibly Connor Gallagher's place and that maybe meant he would have a bit more game time, but it's not proven that way. However, he has had some good performances for us in the conference of league and such, but definitely I think as a player who should be playing more football, 100%, don't think it's necessarily going to be at Chelsea considering the quality of midfielders we have and we probably need this this is This is always going to be the issue with our squad is we need players who are happy to be squad players and that's a rare type of player and what we ah when when we're in the Champions League and we do have the quality to be fighting on all four fronts, which we're we're probably not far off,

um it's it's ah it's easier to appease players because you're swapping them between the Premier League and the Champions League typically um if you know for squad players and then also you have league and FA Cups whereas at the moment you know these players are playing conference league football in the earlier stages and that's probably not as satisfying to them and and seeing that we're also doing well in the Premier League I want to be part of that.

So I can completely understand his position that, you know, the room that's come out today that he does want to leave and that there are suitors lining up bids for him. It's probably most likely that this window is going to be more of an outgoing is one than an incoming is one for us. And also the FA Cup, you know, starts this weekend. We want to be that's a trophy which definitely be able to win. We have to start being Chelsea again, and this is why fans have started to say, you know, we've got our Chelsea back and such and such, but we have to, I think if we do sign someone this window, it has to be someone who really, someone who's coming into some mental place in that first 11, I think it's replacing squad players at this point is, you know, we have we have great youth players. And even if you want to look at it in terms of the fact that we could give a few more youth players a chance and realistically the board could look at that and go oh we could probably get but a bit more money for them i don't even see how that's you know not that we want that to happen as chelsea fans we don't want to see youth players sold but i think youth players should probably be taking up these squad positions that are left by you know the you know please be hall leaving um uh in cuckoo possibly leaving um

So we'll see what what happens. it's It's early in the in the transfer to a window. um I think the board are definitely waiting for outgoings to happen first before they realize what they can do ah in this window. You know, we've also had Ensign Milano return as a centre back. Maybe it won't be a centre back signing this window. Maybe we will look for an attacking signing. um The one that's constantly rumoured is, you know, is are we going to sign another striker? I don't know if that's going to happen in January, but only because Strikers are expensive anyway. January is an inflated market regardless. um And really, if we look into the quality of the striker we want, um there's a chance, you know, we don't want him to be cup tied really as well. um If they played in European competition. um So it's tricky. January is always tricky. and But I think the rumors that are coming out at the moment like do make total sense. And the players are rumored at the moment that we spoke about in this podcast and who we spoke about Monday as well. I do sort of see making movies at the very least.
