Introduction and Welcome

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Chelsea, brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm your host Matt Blagdon and during this brilliant festive time of festive cheer and Merry Christmas and all the mince pies, mulled wine and so much more, it is myself and my esteemed guest, lyrical Luke, to discuss all things ahead of the Boxing Day madness. Luke, how are you doing?
00:00:33
Luke
Yes, yes, very, very well, very, very excited. I mean, the Christmas time is only about one thing and one thing only, and that's Boxing Day football. So it's great. It's great to be here now to discuss some what hopefully will be a very good fixture for Chelsea.
00:00:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely.

Boxing Day Football and Chelsea's History

00:00:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, we're just speaking just before coming on. There's Santa's trucker. going all across the globe, and um know so I'm sure that's all the talk ahead of the Boxing Day madness. But i'm I'm sure Santa will be delighted with all the Boxing Day football, because you know what else will he want to do when he's resting after delivering all the good gifts around the world? notably, obviously, here's a full day of football, loop you know sort of the first game at 12.30, lots of games at 3 o'clock, and then we've got 5.30 and 8 o'clock.
00:01:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
game for the for the whole of the UK, whole of the world to watch. I can see all of us football fans being sat in front of the TV for pretty much the whole day watching game after game.
00:01:26
Luke
absolutely spoiled that's what we are exactly
00:01:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes, exactly. yeah If we don't get the presents we want on Christmas Day, we've got it on Boxing Day. It is obviously all on am Amazon Prime, and for those ah if you don't know that already. Chelsea vs Fulham: Current Form and Lineups

00:01:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
look we're playing Fulham at three o'clock at Stamford Bridge so ideal you know I think for both set of fans you know not far to travel on that day and Generally, Chelsea have come out on top, you know, sort of, we've dominated the fixture. In all our games, we've got 52 wins. There's been 27 draws and only 12 losses to Fulham. So we're definitely a key winner in this rivalry, close rivalry in Southwest London. And enough, we actually have played on Boxing Day against Fulham before, and that was back in 2011. Do you want to have a guess, Luke, what the result was and who the scores were for for that result?
00:02:27
Luke
Oh, 2011. I don't know. I'm assuming we won.
00:02:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ooh, okay.
00:02:34
Luke
um um is that is that Is that bold?
00:02:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, go for it.
00:02:36
Luke
Is that a bold call? No, I put me out of my misery. i can't Right now, I can't think my brain's full of mulled wine and and too much festivities.
00:02:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Exactly. Yeah. Yeah. Christmas Eve is kicking it in. Absolutely.
00:02:45
Luke
Exactly, yeah.
00:02:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was a one-all draw and the scorer for Fulham was Clint Dempsey and the scorer for Chelsea was Juan Mata.
00:02:50
Luke
Oh.
00:02:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that let Chelsea legend back in the day. i'm So sad that he didn't you know get more time, but that's the way football goes sometimes. In our last 12 games, we've won 11 and lost one. So definitely the form is with us, Luke. Although it has been a little bit tricky sometimes. think almost two years ago, we did have that game against Fulham where we lost 2-1 and Felix got sent off when he was on loan with us.
00:03:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
that was a pretty poor, unfortunate series of events for us. What's your like you know sort of memory of the the fixture, Luke? And um you think this plays much of play into the game on Boxing Day?
00:03:40
Luke
I think, yeah, it's it's always been ah ah quite an entertaining rivalry between the two teams, particularly with the idea of very much that they're actually a club based, we're a club based in Fulham, but we call ourselves Chelsea.
00:03:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yep.
00:03:52
Luke
So it's quite it's quite interesting that they their fan base always bringing up, but but but I think its it's very much what I'd consider quite a posh rivalry in terms of, it's a part of London that the
00:04:06
Luke
It's a little bit bit more affluent than some of the other areas and and ultimately it comes down to a little bit more of a different type of fan base for for for kind of both clubs oh overall really. there's a little bit It generally feels more civilized than I think say yeah like a Millwall West Ham for example.
00:04:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:04:24
Luke
But but but yeah ultimately, yeah they have to be respected. I think Fulham are doing quite well at the moment. They're never going to be the dominant force in this part of London because obviously Chelsea exist. But really, yeah that you can't take it lightly because they they've they've had some good results and some good performances against a lot of the sides in the Premier League so

Injury Impacts and Player Rotations

00:04:41
Luke
far this season. So I think it's something that we're going to have to be certainly wary of, particularly off of the back of of a fairly disappointing result, lose dropping points at Everton, but but I mean it wasn't, it was a bad performance, but I think the players will want to be really making a show of it post-Christmas to be trying to get all three points and getting the season kind of back up and up and running, moving forward in the way we want to be and and looking up the table rather than checking over our shoulder.
00:05:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:05:07
Luke
so um yeah it's going to be an entertaining game for sure but yeah Fulham certainly seems to be wary of and Marco Silva is not afraid of of a so of a scrap and and a scrappy game so I think yeah Fulham will certainly be right up for it for sure.
00:05:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely, Luke. Absolutely. I mean, the last time we played, uh, at, at something for which against film war, we did win one nil courtesy of a Cole Palmer penalty in first half stoppage time. So it's not always, you know, sort of a high scoring game and it is generally quite close, even though we generally do get over the line.
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm Installing just on you know sort of going on to kind of current form and everything in the last eight games So since the start of November, this is a fun fact for everyone Chelsea would be top of the table with 18 points ah but Fulham would be a in the sort of middle mid table ish about eighth with 13 points so you know still on a solid good form although they have only one once in their last six games also just to just to sneak in the sort of form of man city's downfall if we look at the last eight games they've only got four points in the premier league so lots of work to do for them indeed and hopefully there's a revival for their fans this christmas anyway well not for the rest of the the fans in the league though
00:06:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah, look just on current form and all of that. I mean, uh, yeah, obviously it was, you know, sort of a solid stalemate against Everton.

Match Dynamics and Team Analysis

00:06:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
but do you think sort of, Fulham being, where they are and, you know, sort of a strong side, they're currently a ninth in the league. you think they can maybe disrupt Chelsea's plans to get back into our, our winning form again?
00:06:45
Luke
I think, yeah, i mean they're going to be as motivated as pretty much any team we'd face at at the moment to to want to to destabilize what what's been a fairly positive period of of matches for us recently.
00:06:58
Luke
but but yeah i think If it comes down to it, if both teams play to the the peak of their abilities and and and and their quality, then I think Chelsea should win fairly comfortably. but But you never know, because it takes it just takes one moment, one off off one player to be off kind of off of kilter and be playing not to their best their ability, and a rash decision, things like that. I'm thinking, namely, of the Liverpool-Fulham fixture with the red card for Robertson that that that can really change a game and can really have an impact on on the final result.
00:07:29
Luke
players are going to need to be wary, as as I've said, about the threat of Fulham, but really it's going to be it's going to be a case of if if if we play to our strengths and we play to the best of our ability, which we should be doing at home, shouldn't really have a problem.
00:07:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. More on that and the potential lineup after this break.
00:08:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome back. Luke, in terms of lineups against Fulham, we currently have the the following players out via injury, which is Badia Shilei, Fafana, Lavia and Rhys James. I think we've kind of become accustomed to Rhys James being out now some time. Fafana obviously gutting. think the Badia Shilei and Lavia injuries The fact that they're out for a while, according to Mariska, is a bit of a know ah ah gut punch, I think, because they were great players to you know have on the bench or to kind of come in when we needed a bit of rotation. In light of the fact that we now have no suspensions and Kukarola is available for this game, do you expect him to come straight back into the the starting 11? And ah you think there will be any other changes from the lineup against Everton?
00:09:22
Luke
Yeah I think ultimately it would be a fairly like for like change having Kukarela coming for Tisasi and Gusto moving over to that right hand side and Kukarela going back to being the kind of inverting and overlapping fallback that will obviously be playing in that sort of that force.
00:09:42
Luke
Force 9, high 10 position, that that he's sort of been undertaking in the last few fixtures to great effect. So I think, yeah, we'll probably feel a little bit more balanced maybe I'd say as as a team, but apart from that, I don't expect much changes. There may be some um different lineup at the front to rotate and rest maybe a couple of players. ah ah could like We could see Madaweki coming from the start and one of Neto or Sancho rested potentially.
00:10:04
Luke
I imagine that Parma and Jackson will will be starting as well, just to carry on where they were. And then they could run a form. noted in the review of the Everton game, actually Parma maybe had a bit of an off day.
00:10:15
Luke
So I'd imagine he would be kind of chomping at the bit to to prove himself in this game. So I certainly would keep him involved. But yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a few curve balls thrown in there with with potential changes in the lineup just because it is so soon off the previous game that we're playing again.
00:10:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm hmm.
00:10:30
Luke
And obviously we have a lot of games coming up as well that that we're going to have to be yeah be managing the squad with as as best as possible.
00:10:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yup.
00:10:38
Luke
But yeah, you you I don't imagine it will be ah yeah too too much of bit of a difference. so I think Tosin as well obviously wants to play against his team that that he he left obviously to join Chelsea.
00:10:49
Luke
And he didn't put any foot wrong really against Everton. So it would be a pretty hard done-by if he's one of the players that misses out as well. So I'd imagine it would be a back four of Coorcarilla, Colwell, Tosin and Gusto.
00:11:02
Luke
potentially the same a players ahead of them, if not a change on on the wings potentially.
00:11:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, interesting. I mean, I totally agree with you in terms of that backline. I think that probably is our strongest back four with the current circumstances. And yeah, potentially sort of seeing, know, sort of depends on sort of Mariska's game plan, potentially having Neto and Metal OK on both wings if we want to be more direct and and more aggressive rather than a bit more technical and cutesy. then also that does allow Fernandez to push up alongside Palmer for those little pockets then feed into Jackson.
00:11:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just interesting in terms of obviously there's a lot of turnover with the games, you know, so we do play it switch next Monday and that is away and then and then four days after that we then do go to Palace away. there was a lot of traveling involved in that and in that sense as well. you think we potentially might see Jorgensen make an appearance for this game or any of the games coming up?
00:11:53
Luke
I don't imagine so ultimately from the point that Sanchez had a very good game against Everton and he yeah he he um is clearly number one for Maresco as well so I don't imagine he'd want to disrupt too much flow for a goalkeeper particularly when it's a position that has Obviously, yes, you're open to injury and an issue and difficulty, but they don't get anywhere near as much physical fatigue as as as the outfield players do. It's probably more of a mental process of maybe he needs a bit of a rest if he's concentrated and solidly and isolated for 90 minutes. so yeah that There could be rotation. I would never i would never be surprised with what Mareska decides to do, but that would potentially would be a position that I would i would but think is probably lower down in his his thought process of of having to rotate.
00:12:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. I think, not too much disruption. I mean, he has tinkered quite a fair few times throughout the season so far, but I guess, you know, when we get into the the thick and thorough games, you want as much chemistry and cohesion as possible, just so that where they're not having to learn on the game, you know, is exactly how to play with one another.
00:12:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just a word on Fulham Luke, obviously They do have some you know, really stand out players in the likes of a web. He's really stepped up the season They've got ML Smith row who's really creative even you know, Ralph Jimenez. He's pretty clinical Moniz there later signing this this season hasn't chipped in with that many goals, but he's always know quite a bit of a danger man and he's a bit of a bit of a handful for defenses and um Where do you think, sort of the i like as in, do you expect Fulham to line up as standardly as they do with their lineup? And um do you think the main danger men are that are from that we need to be wary of?
00:13:28
Luke
Yeah, I think I think you're going to expect a fairly typical side. We're putting out, I imagine that, uh, but Leno has obviously been a very, very solid goalkeeper for them since, since joining the club. And, and he's probably one of the, one of the stronger names in the Premier League, uh, kind of goalkeeping ranks. So, um, he's, he's certainly he's certainly, um, solid base that's built off of and having, whether it's kind of Calvin Bassi or he said, d or whoever they were playing kind of sent a half in front, in front of him is, uh, They're a strong group and I think they have a real talisman in Anthony Robinson who's really finding his kind of, his direct impact on games now where he's he's at an age, I think he's around about 27, 28 or so now where where he's he certainly
00:14:11
Luke
flourishing and really showing his his quality. Again, he's been a player that's obviously been very good for Fulham and has pretty much had that left back spot he's owned for over the last few years, but it's very much now he's he's sort of hitting the ranks of of performing like a top-level Premier League player pretty much week in week out so he's always going to be a threat um and and he's definitely definitely a handy for an assist or two for Fulham as well so certainly a player we'd have to keep an eye on yeah but moving forward at the pitch I mean really about Jimenez is always a dangerous operator he knows where the back of the net is and he's quite a physical presence as well I think he's the the head injury suffered a few seasons ago whilst the Wolves it has affected him a little bit I don't think he's ever reached that level of consistency and kind of
00:14:52
Luke
all out freedom as a striker you need to be able to put your head in where it hurts and I think he's had a little bit of restriction and but he is starting to find himself again under Marco Silva and I think that's one of Marco Silva's more commendable elements as as ah as ah ah as a coach is he definitely brings the best out of the majority of players.
00:14:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:15:08
Luke
they'll play to a certain level that that you wouldn't maybe not have expected them to. You see players, like you mentioned, in terms of Smith Rowe and Reese Nelson, for example, that have had a bit of a renaissance, having been released from the shackles at Arsenal, where they weren't really getting a lot of game time. They're now being utilised as really kind of excellent Premier League level performers. So there's a lot of threat. I mean, they've got they've got some some quality off the bench as well, whether Harry Wilson starts or he comes off the bench. He's been quite important for them and influential in games.
00:15:35
Luke
in the last few weeks. So it will certainly be interesting to see kind of how they operate, but but I imagine it will be very much a like for like, fairly set up in terms of they'll probably match that sort of on paper, the four, two, three, one sort of setup that Mariska will have.
00:15:51
Luke
obviously it will play out slightly differently in game, but I imagine it will be very much kind of balanced personnel on the pitch. But yeah, Fulham really, I think have to be commended, particularly with the, um, the loss of, Zhao Paulina, who's obviously one of their, one of their very, very exceptional players. They've, they've really sort of risen to that and, uh, sort of taken on that, that responsibility in the midfield and they haven't really kind of put a foot wrong in that sense of, uh, they've taken it in their stride. Let's say it that way, they haven't noticed that kind of gaping or a mission in their midfield, really.
00:16:20
Luke
From what I understand, again, I don't watch them every week, but just seeing kind of how they've been operating at different points throughout the season, think that thing they have they have to they have to be proud of kind of where they where they're at. And and the fact that they're in a conversation now to be considered a team that's ah ah a consistent top 10 or around top 12 team in in the Premier League is is something that that They really shouldn't be taken for granted because they have had a few seasons, especially in the last kind of five, 10 years or so, where it's been a little bit up and down. So they're going to want to keep that consistency for the good of the club and and for the future, for the future kind of ambitions of of of the team as well.

Match Predictions and Key Players

00:16:52
Luke
So yeah, they're they're in a good space. They're always, they're always liable to to be a threat for any team they face. And I think Chelsea, as I said, can have to be wary of that. But if we're up for it, I don't, I don't see us having too much difficulty with whoever they put out on the lineup.
00:17:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, totally agree, Luke. I mean, just to note on what you're saying with with Robinson, he does have six assists for the season so far, which is very strong for a fallback. And there is actually some rumors that Liverpool might be in the market for him, given Andy Robinson is slowly you know sort of coming to the end of his power. It's still a strong left back, but you know they want someone a bit younger still.
00:17:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:17:25
Luke
would be too much for change on the the show on the back of it as well from Robertson to Robinson so yeah they'll uh they'll be saving a bit of money if you read in the shirt yeah yeah yeah
00:17:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:17:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is that that true? Yeah, some bit of cash there.
00:17:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
All these little details, you know, everything's a business, you know, you've got to think about these things nowadays.
00:17:38
Luke
i'm always looking out for things like that as lyrical nukes so
00:17:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, exactly, exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's not just the quality of the player, but what is their name?
00:17:48
Luke
yeah
00:17:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Also, a quick note on, spoken about, you know, Wobian as a throw and those sort of players from Arsenal, but Josh King, 17-year-old talent for Fulham, made his full Premier League debut in the last game. Funny the fact, he was actually a mascot for Fulham's current captain, Tom Kearney, and he's come through the youth system and now actually playing for the first team.
00:18:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
A nice little story there for Fulham, but hopefully it's just a nice story and not a naughty story against Chelsea this weekend, or this Thursday rather. Anyway, more on school predictions and much more after this break.
00:18:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome back. So, Luke, how we now get to the point where we need you know so we need to decide, or maybe not decide, we don't have that sort of power, but we can predict the outcome, the score line, the scorers for this game. I think one key player, for me in particular, that really stands out in the last seven or eight games has been really been Enzo Fernandez and how he's stepped up.
00:19:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's been so much talk of him, you know, potentially going in January at the start of the season and how does he fit in? he's really been able to adapt to his game, adapt to what Mariska wants, and now has, yeah, three goals and four assists in his last seven prem appearances, which is wonderful reading. Also, it does seem like a great, you know, captain to have. Obviously, he's vice captain of the club right now, whilst Ruiz James is that injured, but he just brings out so much energy, passion, leadership. I think he is, you know, sort of a brilliant player to to lead the team out, week in, week out.
00:19:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do you think the score is going to be on Boxing Day Luke and who do you think are going to get the goals?
00:19:56
Luke
I think, yeah, it should be fairly comfortable. As I've said, if everyone's sort of at the best of their ability, as you said, and as a Fernandes, his influence and output within the team has been growing and recently in the last few weeks. And I think he was one of our better performers against Everton as well, actually. um but But yeah, I'd um I'm imagining we're going to we're going to see one or two goals at least I think so. wouldn't be opposed to kind of looking at it as being maybe yeah potentially a three nil for us but i um um'm I'm reticent to say we'll keep a clean sheet but then I also think if we perform how we did against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge I think we'll we'll be totally fine so it it would be interesting to see but maybe three nil or three one I'd say cautiously to think we maybe have a maybe a lapse in concentration or
00:20:41
Luke
to concede late on when Fulham are pushing so to kind of get back into the game. but yeah I don't imagine it's going to be too to too difficult for us.
00:20:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
That is really confident. I like that look. I like that a lot just because I do think... I feel that we are so susceptible just to conceding a goal. I think we're currently at that stage where we're just... we we literally are all about just outscoring the opponent rather than and you sort of holding out a result per se. I mean, Fulham's a waveform. They've played eight. They've won two, drawn four and lost two. So very, very mid-table in terms of their waveform.
00:21:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so they've actually only scored 10 goals away from home while conceding nine. So you know sort of there they're not that great away from home terms of that they're solid enough, they're not that you know sort of strong or that sort of lethal per se, whereas Chelsea definitely have been in the score sheets.
00:21:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Charles' home form, play date, won four, drawn three and lost one. So definitely stronger. Conceded nine at home, scored 14 at home. So, you know, slowly but surely starting to get into that, that way of making stuff a bridge, more of a fortress again. I think, you know, sort of, yeah, I do sort of see us do conceding at some points. Yeah, I'm very,
00:21:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm similar to you in sort of, I do think it'll be ah ah around a round of three, one, maybe a two, one sort of victory. That's that sort of thing just because of where we are right now. And um I can't see a bit of a silly mistake happening, albeit, you know, so we were strong against Everton. For you, Luke, then who do you think, you know, sort of will be on the score sheet, both for Chelsea and for Fulham?
00:22:19
Luke
ah ah think I think i I'd be surprised if Palmer doesn't have some form of influence, whether that's a goal or an assist, but I'd back him to get a goal in in this in this game, I think. and yeah I'd bed be interested to see Nicholas Jackson popping up again with another goal as well.
00:22:33
Luke
That would be useful for us as well. and I think he's been playing well enough that that he'll be disappointed he didn't get a goal against
00:22:39
Luke
I think he's going to want to be influential this in this match coming up as well. so I always back those two to have some form of influence on the team. I could see it potentially being another goal from one of our wingers, whether that be Sancho, Neto or Madewecki. I wouldn't be surprised if they get on the score sheet as well. so But it could be a goal for a substitute as well. Someone like an Nkunku coming on later on and making a difference as well or Michelle Felix. and So yeah, it's sort of hard to pin down, but I've always got to back kind of Jackson and Palmer to be our main goal threats for sure. And then I think for Fulham, I think they'll have a good opportunity through maybe Ray Raoul Hemanes or even if Muniz comes on late on or someone like that. I can imagine them having a threat, particularly down that left-hand side with Robinson putting in some
00:23:25
Luke
ah ah excellent crossing opportunities. um um I could see a goal from one of their their strikers, if not ah like like like a late charge into the box from Alex, he won't be able to pull back that kind of thing. So yeah, it it'll be interesting to see. It is always hard to sort of discern until we know the lineup as well, who he thinks is going to be the main scorer. So it's always, I always feel like I'm sitting on the fence a little bit by picking out our art kind of top two performers in front of goal in terms of Jackson and Palmer. but think it makes that so ah ah they're there for reasons that make sense, to think they're most likely to score. so
00:23:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. The stats don't lie if Shakira did a song about football. But thankfully she hasn't. And I mean, just another thing as well, Luke, is that Fulham, albeit at Craven Cottage, they did hold Arsenal to a one-all draw. And Fulham were very hard for to break down for Arsenal, and Arsenal were only able to get goal via a corner.
00:24:22

Do you think sort of we may need to rely on set pieces for this game or do you think we'll be free flowing enough to get something from from Open Play?

Conclusion and Festive Wishes

Luke
I would be annoyed if we're not able to create enough chances for open play to get a goal, but I also have to appreciate that yeah they they're a well well well organized machine, a more organized team, sorry, and and we' yeah well set up in a defensive mindset ultimately as well. So ah ah yeah, the corners, set pieces, penalties, free kicks, whatever it may be, that they'll they'll all be useful for us. And again, we're we're pretty pretty lucky in terms of having someone like Cole Palmer um the majority of our set pieces to to really make a difference whether that be across from a corner or taking a penalty. So yeah, it's like they can be useful for us. And I think I wouldn't be surprised in a game of this sort of magnitude where it's quite an intense rivalry. There isn't some out kind of overzealous, engaged tackles

Luke
Whether that be inside the penalty area or just shy of it. so yeah there There should be plenty of opportunity for someone to step up and make a difference from a set piece for sure.

Yeah, absolutely. yeah with the yeah It wouldn't surprise me if there was a bit of heatedness. For some reason, I just get the sense more of that around the Christmas time when sort of somehow, at this time, with this the games come thick and fast.
00:25:38
Luke
That was a bit rolled up.

Exactly, yeah. I mean, the one thing we definitely don't want to repeat of is Zhao Felix getting sent off we had almost two years ago. That would not be helpful, especially if he comes on as a sub.

Oh, yes, no, thank you for having me. It's been, yeah, been very, very good to talk ahead, look ahead on a game this time, as opposed to reflecting on what's gone. It's nice, it's nice to to be to be predicting in a positive manner, I think. so yeah yeah ah Yeah, thanks as always.
