Episode Show Notes

In this episode of NextGen Matters, Rich Brown explores one of the most vital yet often overlooked qualities of leadership: integrity. As part seven of the eight-part Why It Matters series, Rich defines integrity, contrasts cultural and biblical views, and explains why integrity is foundational for leaders who want to honor Christ, build trust, and leave a lasting legacy.

Drawing from the lives of Joseph and Daniel, Rich unpacks how biblical integrity is tested, builds trust, and points people to God. Through scripture, historical insights, and practical lessons, listeners will discover eight core ingredients of integrity: truthfulness, consistency, faithfulness, righteousness, humility, justice, compassion, and accountability—and why they are essential for ministry leaders today.

From resisting compromise in private moments to leading with honesty under public pressure, this episode challenges leaders to embrace integrity as foundational to their calling. Whether you’re navigating youth ministry, church leadership, or personal discipleship, you’ll be reminded that integrity is not optional—it is central to reflecting Christ and building lasting trust.

Introduction to Next Gen Matters Podcast

00:00:01
NextGen Matters
Hey friend, welcome to the Next Gen Matters podcast, a show for ministry leaders seeking to move beyond overwhelm and move into leading with clarity, confidence, and consistency.
00:00:13
NextGen Matters
I'm Rich Brown, and today's topic gets a lot of coverage, but unfortunately, not too much consistency.

The Cost of Integrity

00:00:21
NextGen Matters
We're looking into integrity.
00:00:24
NextGen Matters
Integrity is one of the greatest gifts we can give to others. While it is free to give away, it is very costly. This episode is the seventh in our eight-part series, Why It Matters.
00:00:37
NextGen Matters
And this episode is dealing with the question, why does my integrity matter?

Integrity in Ministry Leaders: A Challenge?

00:00:44
NextGen Matters
Well, unfortunately, we all know people that we have greatly admired, particularly those in ministry who, for various reasons, have lost their integrity.
00:00:58
NextGen Matters
For some, They lost their integrity during their own lifetime. And for others, they lost their integrity after they passed away. Now, in this episode, I am not going to be dropping any names. and I'm not naming people. I'm not calling people out.
00:01:15
NextGen Matters
You may even try to guess who I'm thinking about. Don't because I'm not even necessarily thinking about this person or that person. Unfortunately, the list is too long. But we all know that within our Christian circles, our team, our family, ministry leaders, whom we have highly regarded, that for a bowl of soup sold their birthright, or for personal pleasure or political advancement, committed acts that they thought they would never, ever do, nor even be capable of doing,
00:01:51
NextGen Matters
Wow. This is going to get into a little bit because we need to talk about this topic. I promise you, in this episode, we are going to be defining integrity.

Defining Integrity

00:02:03
NextGen Matters
We are then going to look into two godly men within scripture that consistently demonstrated a lifetime of integrity and We are then going to investigate why yours and my integrity even matters.
00:02:20
NextGen Matters
And then at the end, ask ourselves some very needed questions. So by the end of the episode, you will see how integrity shapes character. Integrity builds trust and integrity points people to God.
00:02:36
NextGen Matters
So let's define it. All right. So I went online and I just wanted a basic secular oriented definition of integrity. Here's what I got. Integrity is the quality of being honest, consistent and morally upright, living in alignment with values and principles without compromise.
00:02:55
NextGen Matters
According to dictionary.com, they provided three bullets. And here's the first of the three bullet points. Adherence to moral and ethical principles. Soundness of moral character.
00:03:07
NextGen Matters
Semicolon honesty. Second bullet point. The state of being whole, entire or undiminished. And this is referring more to like building structure, the structure that has integrity or even organizational integrity.

Integrity in Society: Politics and Sports

00:03:22
NextGen Matters
The third bullet point, a sound, unimpaired or being in perfect condition. That's, according to the secular culture, what is the definition of integrity.
00:03:34
NextGen Matters
Well, what's the opposite of integrity? That would be seen as and defined as dishonesty, corruption, or moral compromise. Why did I think politicians? I have no idea. You know, it's not just politicians.
00:03:48
NextGen Matters
Right now, right now in 2025, we are coming off of even now within athletics at the highest level of professional sports, right?
00:03:57
NextGen Matters
Ball players, both baseball, football, in all three sports, and basketball, because of online betting, have been throwing games or throwing certain throwing certain elements to their game, throwing it off, throwing it away to make some extra money.
00:04:15
NextGen Matters
We also have referees and umpires that are now being found as guilty. It's like it's in sports, it's in politics, it's everywhere we go. What's so sad is this is now our culture. This is the United States of America, who when you do a deep dive in what the founding fathers and framers actually said about integrity, which I won't go into that in this particular episode, but I did a large breakdown in my own research for this topic. I was wonderfully and delightfully...
00:04:47
NextGen Matters
grateful to read how from GW, from George Washington Jefferson to Madison and Monroe, including Benjamin Franklin, all speaking to the need of integrity.

Founding Fathers on Integrity

00:04:58
NextGen Matters
Even James Madison saying that our constitution will only work for a moral and upright people. But when we, as the proverb says, cast off restraint, when we cast off restraint,
00:05:14
NextGen Matters
what happens to the culture. And we're now dealing with this. It's no surprise to me that dishonesty and and disregard for decency and disrespect for other people or authority or even the rule of law seems to be what's trending now.
00:05:30
NextGen Matters
When I was a young kid, the golden rule I was taught went like this, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Now I think there's a new way that the golden rule has been redefined. Here's my new definition of the new version of the golden rule. You ready?
00:05:45
NextGen Matters
Do unto others, video record it, upload it, blame it on somebody else for what you did, and then gaslight somebody. i'm laughing, but I shouldn't be.
00:05:56
NextGen Matters
But as an apprentice, as a disciple, as a follower of Jesus Christ, I know the difference that Jesus makes in all matters of life. And that includes my character, my integrity.
00:06:08
NextGen Matters
After all, Jesus said to his own apostles, I am the way, the truth, and the life. In the same night, he said that phrase to them in the garden of Gethsemane.
00:06:20
NextGen Matters
And that same night, he's now on trial before the Roman governor, Pilate. And he says this in John 18, all who are in the side of truth, listen to me. And that's when Pilate sarcastically came with that great classic comeback.
00:06:33
NextGen Matters
What is truth? Question of our age today, right? So Jesus frames for us that he is truth. God's word is the truth. That was last episode on why my theology matters. Now do you see why I put this right after that episode? Because everything is being scaled. Everything is being scaffolded throughout these eight parts of this series.

Biblical Insights on Integrity

00:06:57
NextGen Matters
Well, here's a healthy biblical definition of integrity. To us is who championed the cause of Christ and were disciples of Jesus. This is what it is for us. You ready? Integrity means living truthfully and consistently according to God's word, being honest, upright, and faithful in both heart and action.
00:07:19
NextGen Matters
It is the alignment of my thoughts, my words, and my deeds with biblical values, regardless of the circumstances, regardless of the circumstances.
00:07:32
NextGen Matters
I have before me a list of what I call eight ingredients that are core elements of biblical integrity. This is how we as followers of Christ, as children of the living God, how we need to frame biblical integrity. Here's eight core elements. Number one is truthfulness.
00:07:54
NextGen Matters
We are to be speaking and living in truth. We are to avoid deceit and hypocrisy. Proverbs 12, 22 and Ephesians four twenty five The second of the eight is consistency, aligning our words, actions, and beliefs so that our whole life is wholly focused and undivided.
00:08:14
NextGen Matters
Proverbs 10, verse 9. Faithfulness is the third one, remaining loyal to God's commands and promises, even under pressure. Daniel 6, verse 10, Job 2, 3.
00:08:27
NextGen Matters
three Fourth is righteousness, choosing what is morally right according to God's standards, not personal gain. Proverbs 13, 6. Humility, recognizing dependence on God and serving others without pride.
00:08:46
NextGen Matters
Micah 6, 8. Philippians 2, 3. The sixth one is justice. Acting fairly and with equality. Reflecting God's concern for the oppressed.
00:08:57
NextGen Matters
Proverbs 21.3. Number seven, compassion. Balancing truth with mercy, showing kindness and forgiveness.
00:09:09
NextGen Matters
Genesis 50 and verse 20, Colossians 3, 12 to 13. And the last of the eight, accountability. Living with awareness that God sees all and being transparent then before other people.
00:09:23
NextGen Matters
Proverbs 11, 3.
00:09:25
NextGen Matters
Well, speaking of Proverbs, I have a list of various scriptures within Proverbs which speak of integrity, which speak of integrity.

Wisdom from Proverbs on Integrity

00:09:34
NextGen Matters
Proverbs 10, 9.
00:09:37
NextGen Matters
Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out. Proverbs 11, 3, the integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithfulness are destroyed by their duplicity.
00:09:57
NextGen Matters
Proverbs 12, in verse 22, the Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy. Proverbs 13, verse 6, righteousness guards the person of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.
00:10:16
NextGen Matters
Proverbs 19, 1. Better the poor whose walk is blameless than a fool whose lips are perverse. Proverbs 20, 7.
00:10:27
NextGen Matters
The righteous lead blameless lives. Blessed are their children after them. And Proverbs 28, 6. verse six Better the poor whose walk is blameless than the rich whose ways are perverse.

Joseph's Story: Lessons on Integrity

00:10:46
NextGen Matters
When I think of integrity and who in the scripture accurately exemplifies biblical integrity, there are two names that always pop into my mind, Joseph and Daniel.
00:11:00
NextGen Matters
While Job, David, and Nehemiah, among others, are mentioned for having integrity, we also read about their flaws. Whereas Joseph and Daniel Well, they're not perfect because there's none that are perfect, the scripture says.
00:11:16
NextGen Matters
All have sinned and fallen short of his glory. And yet Daniel and Joseph have no flaws ever attached to them. No flaws mentioned in the scriptures. When I think of the two of them with so much they have in common, here's what separates them.
00:11:33
NextGen Matters
First of all, it's 2,000 years. Joseph lived... approximately 1,600 years before the time of Christ, whereas Daniel was 600 years before the time of Christ. So there's 1,000 years apart between the two of them.
00:11:48
NextGen Matters
They're also separated not by just 1,000 years, but they're also separated by 800 miles because Joseph's story takes place in the land of Egypt, whereas Daniel's story takes place in the land of Babylon, which is present-day Iraq.
00:12:03
NextGen Matters
And yet, while those two things separate them, Their stories express timeless truths in this amazing parallel that still so powerfully speaks into our lives today.
00:12:16
NextGen Matters
Let's start with Joseph. Joseph's story in Genesis teaches that integrity means staying faithful to God's truth, resisting temptation, and leading with honesty, even when it costs His life shows that integrity is both tested and rewarded.
00:12:38
NextGen Matters
There are some key ingredients that we're going to see within the life of Joseph and also within within the life of Daniel. But of these key, what I call ingredients, there are these integrity lessons from the life of Joseph. The first one is Joseph resisted temptation.
00:12:57
NextGen Matters
I'm thinking of Genesis 39. We learn that he is actually in that chapter the age of 17 years old. He's a 17-year-old young male.
00:13:09
NextGen Matters
All right? At 17, as a young male, let's be honest, and I'm keeping everything here PG, all right? Joseph, as a 17-year-old young male, he's primed and ready to go.
00:13:24
NextGen Matters
Sexually, he is just as charged up as anybody else. While he's working for his boss, Potiphar, his wife has gone from flirting with him to now openly throwing herself to him.
00:13:38
NextGen Matters
She clears the house, sexually advances himself herself onto him, lets him know that they're alone, and says basically, come on, let's go.
00:13:51
NextGen Matters
And his response is incredible. He says, how could I do this against my master? And I will not sin against God. I will not sin against God.
00:14:04
NextGen Matters
This, in this act alone shows that integrity requires moral character, even when no one else is watching. Now, let me let me dive in a little bit to this this part of the story of Joseph because I've already said one component.
00:14:19
NextGen Matters
He's 17. He's a young male. He is sexually not just ready. He is sexually ready to go. He's just charged up. That's that's how it is at 17, okay? And what I find, though, interesting is that there has been no one in his family who has said no to sexual temptation.
00:14:40
NextGen Matters
I mean, his father, Jacob, four women, all kinds of brothers all all around, plus sisters. Jacob didn't say no. His brother Reuben, chapter 38, never mind, you know Judah as well. just you You don't want to go into Judah and Reuben. These guys are all messed up, man. His grandfather, Isaac,
00:15:06
NextGen Matters
Isaac was going to let a political king, if you will, sleep with his own wife just to save his own bacon. And where did Isaac get that from was what his dad did. Father Abraham, who had many sons, all right?
00:15:18
NextGen Matters
Abraham did the same thing. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, there is no, at this point in Joseph's life, there is no one in his family lineage who has said no to sexual temptation.
00:15:30
NextGen Matters
Matter of fact, he is the first one in the book of Genesis that actually says no. And he says, I cannot sin against God, which I also find is very interesting because Moses hadn't yet existed. There is no 10 commandments.
00:15:44
NextGen Matters
There is no thou shall not commit in adultery yet written down, but he knew in his heart he would violate God. He resisted temptation. Go Joe. All right.
00:15:55
NextGen Matters
Number two of a key ingredient, integrity lessons from the life of Joseph, he's faithful in small things. Whether he's serving as a slave or he's managing an entire prison, Joseph is working diligently and honestly.
00:16:11
NextGen Matters
And his integrity in these humble tasks prepares him for greater responsibility as Egypt's second ruler. He'll become second in command of the entire kingdom of Egypt.
00:16:24
NextGen Matters
Number three, the third ingredient, truth, is discerning. When Joseph then, years later, tests his brothers as they, during the seven years of famine, come and approach come into the land of Egypt seeking seeking wheat, seeking grain to take back home to dad and the rest of their larger family.
00:16:46
NextGen Matters
Joseph for recognizes his brothers, but of course, as you know the story, they don't recognize him. And in chapter 42 and verse 33, Joseph being discerning, asks them some very honest questions about home.
00:17:00
NextGen Matters
Do you have a father? Is your father still alive? How is he doing? Do you any any other brothers? He wants to see, are these still very deceitful men or are they speaking truth?
00:17:10
NextGen Matters
You see, just as Joseph's own integrity had been proven through slavery, false accusation, and even prison, He's now examining his brothers to see if truth would endure under pressure.
00:17:23
NextGen Matters
Will they be truthful? And here's why I think he does this. If he is going to then benefit them with grain, he needs to know that they were speaking the truth. To, let me say, partner with them is to attach his character to their character.
00:17:40
NextGen Matters
So truth is discerning. Another ingredient in integrity that we see through the life of Joseph, responsibility for others. Joseph ensured his brothers that they could take food home during this test, that integrity would be balanced with justice and compassion.
00:18:04
NextGen Matters
Another lesson learned from Joseph is forgiveness and reconciliation. Years later, as their father had then moved into the land of Egypt, along with all of their entire large family moving into Egypt, his father then passes away.
00:18:23
NextGen Matters
And wouldn't you know it in Genesis 50, the brothers concoct another deceitful storyline They're so concerned that their life insurance policy, i.e. dad, now that he's dead, the life insurance policy is now expired.
00:18:40
NextGen Matters
They're now concerned that Joseph will then either put them in prison, throw them out of the country, or even take their own lives. They're concerned for their lives. So they lie again to Joseph.
00:18:51
NextGen Matters
But you know what, dad said, hey, you know don't don't hurt us, don't mess with us. Dad never said that. And Joseph saw through it. And I love what he said. Despite this betrayal that happened to to himself many decades earlier, and even now a new version of deceit, Joseph forgives his brothers. And he says this classic line, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.
00:19:20
NextGen Matters
Genesis 50 and verse 20. Integrity includes mercy and healing. Joseph would not play the victim card. The last lesson we learned through the life of Joseph, these ingredients I'm referring to is God, is a sense of God-fearing accountability.
00:19:40
NextGen Matters
Joseph lived with awareness that God sees all. I'm going right back to Genesis 39, 17 years old, in this big house with this apparently beautiful woman throwing herself at him. And he says, I cannot sin against God.
00:19:55
NextGen Matters
He knew that God's presence was there. His choices reflected reference for divine oversight, reminding us that integrity is rooted in accountability before God.
00:20:07
NextGen Matters
So why does Joseph's integrity matter? i mean, when you take the whole story of Joseph, and if you could wrap it into three bullet points, why does Joseph's integrity matter? Well, integrity may cost you. It costs Joseph his freedom when falsely accused.
00:20:24
NextGen Matters
Yet he held firm in his integrity. Integrity may cost you. Integrity may, integrity not only may cost you, but integrity builds trust.
00:20:35
NextGen Matters
Pharaoh entrusted Joseph with Egypt's survival because he exemplified honesty and wisdom. And the third bullet point is integrity reflects the sovereignty of god Joseph's trials became part of God's plan to save just not the land of Egypt, but the nations surrounding Egypt, showing that integrity aligns us with divine purposes.
00:21:05
NextGen Matters
Joseph, the dude crushed it. What a great and classic example of integrity. But it gets even better.

Daniel's Example of Integrity

00:21:15
NextGen Matters
a thousand years later,
00:21:18
NextGen Matters
There's a young boy named Daniel whose parents or of were were part of the royal royalty there in the city of Jerusalem. As Judah is beginning to crumble and eventually will fall to the Babylonians, as this young boy, he along with many other young boys, were taken away and hauled off by the Babylonians, he left in the first of the three trips of exile into the land of Babylon.
00:21:48
NextGen Matters
Daniel is a young boy. It says in Daniel 1a, he had purposed in his heart. You know that you that classic verse, right? i love this because we're already seeing that daniel had a walk with god as a young boy so now a few years later as a teenager you go ahead and search it online almost every commentator and and biblical historian puts this era right at 603 bc right about in 603 bc and when you look at the ex time of exiles this young man would have been about 15 of age
00:22:24
NextGen Matters
There are integrity lessons we can learn from Daniel. This young teenage boy, right? This young man. Integrity lessons from Daniel. What were some of Daniel's ingredients?
00:22:35
NextGen Matters
First one, faithfulness and small choices. Daniel 1.8. As this 15-year-old, this teenager, he resolved not to defile himself with the king's meat. I won't go through the depth of that story. It's a beautiful story.
00:22:48
NextGen Matters
But integrity begins with everyday decisions that honor God, even when that's seen in minor. Hey, it's just the king's meat. It's just the king's wine. It's no biggie. All the other Jewish boys that were of royal descent were doing it, except for three, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, and Daniel.
00:23:09
NextGen Matters
Those four did not. Second ingredient we see in Daniel's life, dependence on God. Daniel, years later, then interprets dreams and visions by seeking God's wisdom. That's in Daniel 2, 19 to 23.
00:23:25
NextGen Matters
Integrity acknowledges that true insight and strength does not come from within. doesn't come from the universe. It comes from God. and Daniel told that to Nebuchadnezzar.
00:23:39
NextGen Matters
My God will give me this revelation. He says it won't come from me. It'll come from my God. dependence on God. Another key ingredient in the life of of of Daniel is this.
00:23:54
NextGen Matters
He led with integrity. When you look at the entire lifespan of Daniel, this brother, he served under five kings during his lifetime.
00:24:05
NextGen Matters
That's Daniel 4.27. Remember, meaning, meaning, tekel person. Your kingdom is now being taken from you. even says the truth. then comes cyrus who's a persian cyrus the great as an advisorr to kings daniel spoke truth respectfully even when it was hard that's daniel four twenty seven remember meaningy mini tela pearson your kingdom is now being taken from you and even says the truth to this king, and that would Belshazzar.
00:24:36
NextGen Matters
Integrity in leadership means balancing courage with humility. Next, we see consistency in character. Daniel's enemies could find no corruption in him.
00:24:49
NextGen Matters
This is now years later, years later, right? Under Cyrus, years later in Daniel 6, his enemies could find no corruption in him.
00:25:01
NextGen Matters
so So much so that he had a life integrity. They had to make up a law and have the king sign off on that law that they knew would go against his commitment to Jehovah.
00:25:14
NextGen Matters
His life was marked by reliability and honesty. He was consistent in character, courage under pressure. In his 80s, there in Daniel 6, he When forbidden to pray, Daniel continued his daily rhythm of prayer, even facing the home of Jerusalem.
00:25:36
NextGen Matters
Integrity means staying true to our spiritual disciplines, regardless of external threats. Two episodes earlier, i talked about how our devotional time matters.
00:25:47
NextGen Matters
And that devotional time gives us courage under pressure. The last ingredient I see of the integrity lessons we can learn from the life of Daniel is his public testimony.
00:26:00
NextGen Matters
Same chapter, chapter six of Daniel, his deliverance then from the lion's den showed that integrity glorifies God and even inspires faith in other people.
00:26:10
NextGen Matters
Because even Cyrus says, now from worship and me, he's like, okay, now let's all worship Jehovah. you know Flip gods, flip from me being the God to then the Lord God being the God. But the point was Daniel had this incredible spiritual influence on Cyrus.
00:26:25
NextGen Matters
Why does Daniel's integrity matter? Well, if you take his whole story wrap it up into three bullet points, I see it like this. Integrity is tested. Integrity builds trust.
00:26:38
NextGen Matters
And integrity points to God's sovereignty. Integrity is tested. Daniel lived in Babylon, surrounded by compromise, yet he remained faithful. Integrity builds trust.
00:26:49
NextGen Matters
Kings relied on Daniel because of his wisdom. He was consistent and his motives were pure. And integrity points to God's sovereignty because Daniel's life demonstrated that God honors those who honor him.
00:27:04
NextGen Matters
When you take their two lives separate, like two rails on a railroad track, but now if you kind of think of them as being synthesized together, there are some common themes between Joseph and

Timeless Relevance of Integrity

00:27:16
NextGen Matters
Daniel. There are some common themes of integrity, which I think are just sweet.
00:27:22
NextGen Matters
Here we go. There's a list I have here. You ready? Young commitment to God. Both of them had a teenage commitment to God and obeying God's commands, which then carried them through their entire life.
00:27:38
NextGen Matters
Youth ministry matters. Okay. We see with Joseph, 17, under the pressure there in the house of Potiphar and the sexual temptation coming his way. But even before the age of 17, he had committed himself to purity before God.
00:27:56
NextGen Matters
Daniel 1.8, Daniel had purposed himself in his heart to not defile himself before God. When did that take place? Before the age of 15.
00:28:07
NextGen Matters
They both had a young commitment to God. They both demonstrated faithfulness in exile. They both were taken from their homeland, Joseph into Egypt, Daniel into Babylon, and they both remained loyal to God in foreign countries and foreign cultures.
00:28:27
NextGen Matters
They also demonstrate that they resisted compromise. Joseph resisted Potiphar's wife. Daniel refused the king's food. And he continued to pray despite threats and to to stop praying to God.
00:28:45
NextGen Matters
Each of them chose obedience over convenience. They both demonstrate integrity under false accusation. Joseph was imprisoned unjustly.
00:28:58
NextGen Matters
Daniel, thrown into the lion's den. But they both trusted God rather than retaliating. They both demonstrate wisdom and discernment.
00:29:09
NextGen Matters
Joseph interpreted Pharaoh's dreams. Daniel interpreted Nebuchadnezzar's visions. You see, their integrity was then paired up with God's given insight. God gave them divine insight.
00:29:24
NextGen Matters
They both demonstrated leadership influence. Joseph rose to second in command in Egypt. Daniel became a trusted advisor to these multiple kings. Integrity will open doors to lasting impact.
00:29:39
NextGen Matters
They both demonstrated public testimony. Their lives demonstrated that God honors those who honor him. They both were leading pagan rulers to acknowledge God's sovereignty.

They both demonstrated a consistency in character. Neither Joseph nor david or nor Daniel wavered when tested. Their integrity was not situational.
00:30:07
NextGen Matters
It was not emotional. It wasn't just contextual. Their devotion was established as their connection was tightly designed and tightly committed to following God.
00:30:21
NextGen Matters
They were consistent in their character. So what can I learn from Joseph and Daniel? Me personally, what can you personally, what can we learn from their lives? For us as followers of Christ, Joseph's example challenges me, challenges you, challenges us to number one, resist compromise in both our public life and our private life, resist compromise.
00:30:47
NextGen Matters
Joseph's example challenges me to be faithful in small responsibilities Trusting in God that he will then give me greater ones. Sounds like the words of Jesus, huh?
00:31:00
NextGen Matters
Joseph also challenges me, challenges you, challenges us to balance justice with compassion in our leadership. It also challenges us to extend forgiveness even when we are wronged.
00:31:16
NextGen Matters
And Joseph's example challenges us to live with accountability, knowing that God weighs our heart. Daniel. Daniel's example challenges us.
00:31:29
NextGen Matters
Daniel challenges us to stay faithful in the small daily disciplines, in this case of him praying every day to the Lord and praying for the city of Jerusalem.
00:31:41
NextGen Matters
Daniel's example also challenges us to be courageous when culture pressures us to compromise, and don't we live in that world today?
00:31:50
NextGen Matters
Daniel's example challenges us to lead with honesty and humility, also to trust God for wisdom in difficult situations, and then finally to live consistently so that others will see Christ through our integrity.
00:32:10
NextGen Matters
So why does their stories matter? o They both demonstrate that integrity matters. Their lives remind us that integrity is not about circumstances, but it's about character shaped by God.

Integrity: Foundation for Trust and Stability

00:32:32
NextGen Matters
As we begin to bring this to a close and to make it even on the more personal, and bring it down to the personal level, Why my integrity matters, why it matters to to us today in 2025 and moving forward as whenever you listen to this podcast, because integrity is foundational.
00:32:50
NextGen Matters
Integrity is foundational because it reflects God's holiness and it builds trust in relationships. It serves as a personal safeguard as it keeps me secure and also ensures my public testimony as I can now demonstrate Christ's character to others.
00:33:09
NextGen Matters
For us as believers and followers in Jesus, and especially to those of us in ministry, integrity is not optional. Integrity is not optional. It is actually central.
00:33:21
NextGen Matters
It is central to us following Christ and leading his people. Integrity builds trust. Integrity builds stability. Integrity builds security.
00:33:34
NextGen Matters
It is opposite of what we see when those without integrity, their lives lead to and lead to this erosion in relationships, this erosion in credibility destroys their credibility. And even lack of integrity leads to instability both personally and socially.
00:33:55
NextGen Matters
Integrity matters because integrity is the invisible thread that holds together trust, credibility, and influence. Without integrity, even the most gifted leader or gifted teacher eventually loses the confidence of those they serve. Here's a brief list of the benefits that you and I have as we are people of integrity.
00:34:26
NextGen Matters
what we can be benefited personally and also to be a benefit to those that we serve. Trustworthiness. People need to know that our words and our actions align because integrity builds confidence that what we say can be believed by those who hear us.
00:34:48
NextGen Matters
Consistency. See, consistency keeps our character steady across the contexts. whether it's in private or in public, people see the same us.
00:35:00
NextGen Matters
People see us the same. I'm not one way here and one way there. In my quiet time recently, I was reading through Galatians and how Paul had to call out Peter. Not to go into that story too much here for time's sake, but Peter's now saying you don't need to be circumcised to these Gentile people, and yet he's no longer eating in public with Gentiles because for fear of the Jews who were Judaizers, Paul calls them out publicly. He goes, bro, you're teaching one thing, but you're not backing it up.
00:35:32
NextGen Matters
Credibility is needed because people are watching us. We need to be consistent. All right. So that's consistency. The next one is the word credibility. Skills and vision may open doors, right? Skills and vision may open doors, but integrity keeps them open.
00:35:50
NextGen Matters
It's what makes others follow your leadership for the long term. Another benefit is influence. and Integrity increases your ri impact. I'm going to say that again.
00:36:04
NextGen Matters
If you were to read this, I'd say get the highlighter out. Integrity increases your impact. When people believe in your integrity, your guidance carries weight.
00:36:17
NextGen Matters
Legacy. It shapes how you and I will be remembered. Integrity ensures our impact just isn't immediate, but it's lasting. And finally, it's resilience.
00:36:31
NextGen Matters
When challenges come our way, integrity will anchor us. It prevents compromise that erodes our mission.
00:36:39
NextGen Matters
As we've proverbially speaking, been having our coffee together, Here's my heart's cry. Here's my heart's cry. i want to leave a legacy to my family.
00:36:52
NextGen Matters
I want them to know that what their father and their grandfather said and taught was truly who he was. I want to leave a legacy to my family.
00:37:06
NextGen Matters
I want to attract lost people to the gospel, not away from the gospel.
00:37:13
NextGen Matters
I want to give a godly example to those believers that I influence. And ultimately, i want to please my Lord.
00:37:26
NextGen Matters
i want to please my Lord.

Reflecting on Personal Legacy: Are You Embarrassed?

00:37:30
NextGen Matters
Call to action. What do we do with all of this? I want you to ask yourself, Actually, I'm sorry, I'm gonna lay out two action steps and here they are. First of all, ask yourself an honest question.
00:37:44
NextGen Matters
Ask yourself an honest question. This is my first call to action and here's the question. If you were to suddenly pass away, is there anything that others would find that would embarrass you?
00:38:01
NextGen Matters
If you were to suddenly pass away, Is there anything that others would find that would embarrass you?
00:38:09
NextGen Matters
You know, I've lost both my parents. Well, I know where they are when they're with Jesus, but I mean, they passed away. All my grandparents have passed away. i still to this day have many things in my home that were both my parents and even my grandparents.
00:38:26
NextGen Matters
When we pass away, people go so through our stuff.
00:38:32
NextGen Matters
That's a good, honest question to ask yourself. And the second call to action is this. Ask the Lord to search your heart. Psalm 139, verses 23 and 24. Search me, O God, and know my heart.
00:38:46
NextGen Matters
Try me and know my thoughts. And see if there be any wicked way in me. And lead me in the way everlasting. Well, next week, our next episode, we will be concluding this opening series of why it matters as we look into the topic, why does my perseverance matter?
